James has ancient roots in Hebrew. It's a variation on the name Hebrew name Yaakov (Jacob) – which became Iacomus in Latin and eventually James in English. the name James means the same exact thing as Jacob—“supplanter” or substitute—and comes from the original Hebrew word for Jacob. It is a modern descendant, through Old French James, of Vulgar Latin Iacomus (cf. Italian Giacomo, Portuguese Tiago, Spanish Iago, Santiago), a derivative version of Latin Iacobus, Latin form of the Hebrew name Jacob (original Hebrew: יַעֲקֹב). The final -s in the English first names is typical of those borrowed from Old French, where it was the former masculine subject case (cf. Giles, Miles, Charles, etc.). James is a very popular name in English-speaking populations.

Who are the hostages still held by Hamas?
On October 7, 2023, 253 Israelis and foreign nationals were kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas and gazan civilians. Since then, 105 were released in a prisioner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas and 3 were rescued.
However, 60 remain in captivity [as of 02/09/24] (4 of those were kidnapped prior to 2023). A recent investigation has concluded that more than a fifth of the hostages are dead and the fate of some other hostages remains unknown. This video explains how doctors determine which hostages are dead, based on the nature of their injury and by analyising footage and the victims' last phone calls. Additionally, during the operation in Gaza, the IDF has recovered the bodies of a few victims and returned to their families for burial.
Since I couldn't find this all in one place, I've compiled a list of: 1) hostages who are presumed alive; 2) hostaged whose death has been reported/confirmed; 3) hostages who were released or rescued. In the group of hostages presumed to be alive who haven't been released, the youngest is 1-year-old Kfir Bibas and the oldest hostage is Iraqi-born 85-year old Shlomo Mansour.
As we learn more information, I'll continue to update this post.
They need to come back home. I'm hoping for more successful rescue operations soon. Keep them in your thoughts.

May 15th is a day that many Palestinians commemorate as a somber day of remembrance of the Nakba, a day of settler violence when half of all Palestinians were forcibly removed or otherwise expelled from their homes. On a related note, May 14th happens to be the day that many Israeli citizens celebrate as their Independence Day.
It’s worth noting that the man in the video, the Israeli settler occupying a Palestinian home in East Jerusalem, is Yaakov (Jacob) Fauci, a Trump-supporting, antivaxxer from Long Island. The video is from 2021, but it serves as an instructive allegory for settler colonialism and what has been going on since 1948.

PARIS — An explosion outside a synagogue in southern France wounded a police officer on Saturday morning in what authorities said was being treated as a terror attack.
A suspect caught on a surveillance camera outside the Beth Yaacov synagogue in the seaside resort of La Grande-Motte, near the city of Montpellier, was caught in surveillance camera footage clad in a Palestinian flag.
France’s acting interior minister ordered police reinforcements to protect Jewish places of worship after the suspected arson
French President Emmanuel Macron calls the attack “an act of terror,” adding in a post on X that “the fight against antisemitism is a daily fight.”
“Sending thoughts to the faithful of the synagogue of La Grande-Motte and all the Jews of our country,” Macron wrote, promising that all efforts were being made to apprehend the perpetrator and to “protect places of worship.”
Police were hunting for the suspect and the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office was put in charge of the investigation, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said.

“This is an antisemitic attack. Once more, our Jewish compatriots are targeted,” Attal said on X, adding: “We won’t give up. In the face of antisemitism, in the face of violence, we will never allow ourselves to be intimidated.”
Two cars parked at the synagogue in the seaside resort town were set ablaze at about 8:30 a.m., causing the blast that injured the police officer, according to French media reports. One of the cars allegedly contained a propane gas tank.

Police say they have detained the alleged stabber who attacked a man waiting at a bus station in northeast Jerusalem's Neve Yaakov neighborhood.
The assailant, a 14-year-old East Jerusalem Palestinian, initially fled the scene, but was caught a short while later in the area, police say.
The victim was taken to a hospital in Jerusalem with light-to-moderate injuries, medics say.

23 Tammuz 5784 (28-29 July 2024)
The 23rd of Tammuz is the yahrzeit of the pivotal kabbalist Moshe ben Yaakov Cordovero, who died in 5330 at the age of 48.
Not much is known about his early life, not even the place of his birth. The surname Cordovero implies ancestry from the Andalusian cultural center of Cordoba, but his birth was thirty years after the decree of expulsion of Jews and Muslims. He at times spelled his name in a Portuguese fashion, but it is improbable that he ever lived there as the expulsion of Jews from Portugal took place a mere five years after that of Aragon and Castile.
By the time he entered the historical record he was residing in Ottoman Palestine in the city of Tzfat just as it became a center of Jewish mysticism. There, he became a student of Joseph Karo, the author of the Shulkan Arukh, and Shlomo Allabetz, author of Lecha Dodi. With Alkabetz as his chavruta, Cordovero began a study of Kabbalah with the Zohar at the age of 20, and composed one of the first systematic syntheses of the kabbalah with other strands of the Jewish theological tradition, which he titled the Pardes Rimonim (orchard of pomegranates). He was soon widely known as a kabbalistic sage and disciples flocked to him from throughout the Jewish world. While up to this point he’d been an instructor of halakha at Tzfat’s Portuguese yeshiva, he soon organized another yeshiva specifically for the many kabbalists who flocked to Tzfat to study with him, and wrote a great number of additional mystical texts, some of which did not see widespread publication for over four hundred years.
His most famous student was Isaac Luria, who became the center of Tzfat’s mystical community soon after his teacher’s death and expounded a large number of novel concepts in the two years between Cordovero’s death and his own. Luria’s vision altered kabbalistic Judaism so completely that every since the main stream has been known as Lurianic Kabbalah as it follows his teachings. But it was Cordovero who systematized the prior writings and gathered the community that would help Luria’s concepts take shape and spread widely.
Cordovero was outlived by his mentors Joseph Karo and Solomon Alkabetz. A large number of legends surround his life and that of Isaac Luria.
