Context:

There is a Ocean's Apart World Overview somewhere in the drafts, but short Version: People went to space to colonize; group got lost; came back Generations later and enslaved their Homeworld;

Wormb Symbolism! Wormbolism if you will:

String = Personhood

On the string signs the enslaved population (Lail)

On string with clothes means there is some recognition to aspects to them as people (in this case PA's exeptional engineering skills) which allows them certain freedoms like free movement or even a life without a (direct) owner.

Being off the string means being actual people (Ashin) with all the privileges that come from it.

Fur patterns = Heritage

Those that stayed in their home system kept a more natural  fur colour and patterns helpful to blend into an aquatic environment.

Meanwhile the people that diverged and evolved while living in space adopted more excentric colours. To the point where especially upper class families would develop certain patterns as their "unique" calling card.

For example: Shiny's more colourful outside signs that their family very much takes pride in appearances. They are very selective regarding mates so they can continue to keep up status.

Black colouration is unique to those that came back from space and has only popped up very recently. It's both kind of a bad sign, but also seen as them having a deeper connection to space and therefore somewhat coveted in a spiritual sense.

So, OA!Captains fur being this black and mimiking stars with the colourful spots very much means that something special is going on there (and partly the reason this arrangend(ish) relationship is even happening)

There is also a bit of symbolism going on with the accessories but they are pretty straight forward.

um so we have nai of course who is my big brother! my elder twin to be specifically. he is going to always lord the few minutes between our birth over me. typical twin behavior right!

there's luida who is the director of ship 3. she took care of me when i was growing up after the big fall. she's really intelligent and has a very big heart. there's a lot of responsibility on her shoulders but she wears it with grace.

brad works with her pretty closely. luida handles a lot of the science and leadership but when it comes to engineering and people pleasing brad is really good at it. he's also just a big chunk of muscle!

lark is my adoptive brother! i'm sure you've all seen them around so they don't really need an introduction but just in case. he's very kind and has a good heart and will always be there for you. they might be a little prickly sometimes but just talk about wormbs with them!
