If I'm not mistaken this is the first serious film from Tyler Perry, it's one that runs like a soap opera. The performances are good, and the first half of the film is decently impressive. However, the film takes a downward turn. It becomes predictable and the ending is loose as it does not tie up to the premise of the film. The main issue of the film is not resolved, and that leaves viewers very dissatisfied. There's a lot of loose ends in this film like what happened to the father of Bayou, Leanne's life after Bayou, and the town that witnessed a tragic and prejudiced murder. A Jazzman's Blues really tries hard to be a serious film, yet it lacks a gripping and sympathetic story.
