#undertale #deltarune #utdr #gaster #ok little bit of rambling bc ive been catching up on a LOT of deltarune stuff #something something guy(s) who cant be perceived without also ceasing to exist #i had the thought yesterday that. gaster is sort of the anti-chara in a way. if you say his name he ‘disappears’#the game crashes or resets etc. literally the opposite of invoking chara lol #plus how chara is so associated with deletion of worlds. and here gaster is wanting to create new ones #creating new worlds. creating a vessel for the player. creating connections #and its so much more sad when you think about how deltarune is like. fundamentally his attempt to connect with the player #he can maintain a connection with us. but we can’t see him. or show him his own name. or acknowledge his identity in any way #or else that connection will be severed. or he’ll disappear. or he’ll cease to have ever existed #mystery man goes away the moment you interact. egg man was never there but he gave you an Egg #etc etc #the white egg noelle was given in her game makes me think about this too because #that egg remained there the whole time she was afraid of it. it couldnt be thrown away. it wouldnt hatch. it was just There #and then when she comes back later and decides to take care of it like any of her other pets. Looking at r/Deltarune to see what theories ppl have come up with based on That One Valentine and it’s soooooooo funny to me that every single post about it is the same. Actual quotes from the subreddit:

“How do we know this is gaster”

“Why else would it mention the letter being impossible to understand at the start”

“It doesn’t have the signature stilted tone gaster’s always had”

“It doesn’t read like gaster in English at all”

“I feel like the beginning narration, the all caps, and the style of writing clearly point to gaster”

“We have no real reason to think he’d talk this way… ever”

It’s back and forth with these general opinions, especially of ‘oh that’s not how he talks’ and I’m just sitting here like

1. When you are a scientist, you do not necessarily talk the same in academic contexts as you do in casual contexts. For the most part, I speak COMPLETELY differently from my papers I’ve written for school compared to when I’m flirting with my partner.

I woke up today not expecting to get some weird lore about Sans and Papyrus

How does Papyrus know about Jevil. How does PAPYRUS know about JEVIL. HOW DOES-

Its such a Papyrus way of explaining Jevil too. A clown playing 'games' with everyone and generally being a menace would be annoying and would be the reason he would be locked away...

This just adds to the major Deltarune theories tbh (Papyrus is the Knight and The Brothers being from Deltarune) and also because I dont know what else to think of it.

genuinely toby fox might be one of the only contemporary creatives I can think of who is incorporating metacommentary on past fan reaction to his work in any REMOTELY interesting ways. and i suspect a big reason for why that aspect of deltarune remains as interesting as it does is because he's either super offline or an extremely lowkey lurker

i hate when ppl are gatekeepy about new fans but sometimes its true. you really DID just have to be there

#deltarune chapters 1 and 2….. upu realllyyyy had to be there #ESPECICIALLLYYY chapter 2. omg.#no wordsss for how it felt when ppl first discovered the weird route #i think utdr suffers a little but if u come in late #like for undertale right.. the big thing is ur not SUPPOSED to get pacifist first time. you CAN but its not intended #but so many ppl were swayed that way by other ppl before they played #like u think abt youtubers… soooo many of them got put off by ppl getting mad at them for playing it ‘wrong’#when i think utdr are abt exploration a lot right… what with the easter eggs and secret routes etc #its still fun to know what u have to do but also .. blech #.. lol kinda unrelated to the main post #anyway new fans will neverrr know the feeling of playing survey_program. sad #im not gatekeeping utdr btw LOL i just think they r missing out a little. sorry guys #lol i still think back to when we just had ch1 and soooo much stuff didnt even register on ppls radars then #THEORY CRAFTERS… GET CRAFTING

sooo i recently started teaching my parents how to play dungeons and dragons, and they let me draw their characters

(this is a wip, i’ll post the finished version soon)

character infodump below the cut!

paxan (right) is played by my mother. he’s a blue dragonborn barbarian who ran away from his clan because of their obsession with violence and war. despite his gruff appearance, he is very kind and gentle, and only fights to protect those whom he loves, and frequently finds himself finishing fights skorpa started.

skorpa (left) is played by my stepdad. he’s a tabaxi bard who plays in a death metal band and loves insulting people. his quick wits and sly nature often lead him into trouble that he can’t resolve on his own, thus relying on paxan for protection.

i’m going to be dm’ing a one-shot with them soon!! this is my first time dm’ing and im so nervous lmao but i’m sure it’ll be fine :)

if anyone has some tips for how to help new players enjoy the game more i would greatly appreciate it!!
