Stiles pushes back from his chair. “Dad, I think we’re gonna head out. Thanks for dinner, Melissa!” He hauls himself up and starts telling everyone goodbye when John stops him.

“Wait, wait, hang on.”

He disappears into the house and comes back with a small package, wrapped in simple blue paper, which he hands to Derek, looking a little sheepish.

He unwraps it carefully and finds a stunning young woman, who looks so much like Laura but isn’t, staring back at him from a plain black frame.

“I, uh. Remembered this picture from when we were kids. Did some digging and found somebody who still had a copy. It’s not the best quality, but. It’s a good picture. That’s exactly how I remember her.”

“She’s beautiful.”

Derek feels his eyes sting a little. His mom was always the one who made sure they celebrated his birthday, special and separate, never rolling it into Christmas or letting everything run together.

“Happy Birthday, son.”

He lets John wrap him up in a hug, feels Stiles squeeze in behind him and wonders how he got so lucky to find a family again.

So. Papa Acachalla, right?

(Unimportant ramblings below)

People who’ve been interacting with me for awhile will know that i seem to have an overtly-critical grudge against this man specifically and have for like. Ever. I couldn’t voice my feelings then, falling back on things I vaguely remembered from canon as intellectual explanations instead of exploring my emotions. Which may not have been good for my treatment of the character.

I’ve had to explore Papa’s history a bit since I’m invested in characters from it, like Maxwell, Princeton, Jeremy, and whatever Cleopatra’s deal is. This is a first since I usually just overlook him, but in exploring the story I’ve kind of realized what could make Papa compelling.

So. The primary joke that I remember from Papa Acachalla— aside from jokes about his name or appearance— is him continuously pushing away his family, invalidating them, insisting he wants nothing to do with them, etc. Hindsight tells me that these can be easily seen as tongue-in-cheek jokes or him pushing people away for backstory trauma reasons. However, I experienced a lot of neglect when I was little, and in that running gag I could only view it from the perspective of one of the other Acachallas… and in bad faith I played it all straight even after other options were presented to me. Him being abusive in neglect gave me validation that my own experiences… were valid, y’know?

But I’m older, I’m in a healthier place, my problems come from way more things then my (actually currently really good) relationship with my parents, and I think I’m finally in a good headspace to give Papa’s character the respectful exploration it deserves!!!

Anyways he’s trans(ftm) now. I’ve declared it. It’s been declared.
