Hey anon, here’s a quick step by step for you:

A hard brush is best for this. The area can then be selected with the magic wand tool so you don’t have to worry about edge control in the following steps.

Keep in mind gravity and light source here, as well as whether or not there are layers in the hair. Turning transfer on will let you blend the highlights and shadows into the midtone where applicable.

This step is important for conveying hair texture. Generally speaking, more contrast lends to coarser hair, less to smoother. Flyaway hairs can also be added if desired.

Vary the hues to taste on a low opacity layer. This can also be used to augment existing lighting effects.
