Tuesday 6/18 - Cymru 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

We started the day by heading over to the Political Science Wing at Aberyswyth University. An International Politics Professor gave us an informative lecture on the importantance of media within in news. She provided examples of how framing can turn a picture describing a certain situation into a picture representing a whole different context. Media has the powerful effect of exemplifying a news article’s bias through framing that confirms their already established bias. Afterwards we had a brief lunch break where my group and I got some appetizing college campus food and picked up some Aberyswyth University merch from the store. For the second part of the educational side of the day, we journeyed to downtown Aber where we went to the regional musuem of the territory of Wales Aberyswyth is in. The musuem described the past ways of life of the Welsh people through depictions if items that were commonly from that time period. After the musuem a large group of us headed to Aberyswyth Cliff Railway where we scaled up the cliff on Aber’s North Beach. The view on the cliff was immaculate and truly surrounded you with the beauty if this world, kinda the same feeling when you drive on Jacksonville’s i-295 when it becomes 8 lanes wide. Overall, the day had a good mix of education and exploration with the cliff views making Wales a must see spot.

Hello! Sorry for the delayed reply!

My main tips are: research something you really love because you will go through periods where you really hate your topic, and you need to find something that will weather the storm.

And the second thing is really important - find a supervisor that you gel with and, ideally, who shares your passion for your topic. At least they should have an understanding of it. There is nothing more miserable than having a supervisor who doesn't get or care for your research, and if they don't it will set you up for a very rough ride. I can't count how many of my fellow doctoral candidates finished late or found their research a miserable experience because they didn't get proper supervisory support. The worst was when the supervisor hated their work and tried to control and change the direction of their research because they didn't understand it, and had no interest in doing so.

TL:DR - your supervisor is SOOOOOO important. Make sure you get on well with them, and make sure they get your research topic.

18/03/2017 Je publie ces images en retard. Pour le tournoi Varsity de l’université de Bangor contre Aberyswyth, j’ai aussi joué dans l’équipe d’octopush (hockey sous l’eau). Bangor a perdu dans cette catégorie parce qu’Aberyswyth était carrément meilleur que nous, il n’y avait pas de doute là dessus. Apparemment ils sont 2eme du Royaume-Uni… Comme c’est un sport qui n’existe pas en France ou qui est alors très peu connu (je n’en avais jamais entendu parler avant d’arriver au Pays de Galles), je trouve intéressant de vous montrer quelques photos pour que vous puissiez vous imaginer un peu comment ce sport fonctionne.

25/03/2017 Varsity !!! Tous les ans, l’université de Bangor organise un tournoi contre une autre université galloise, Aberyswyth. Tous les sports des deux universités s’affrontent et à la fin de la journée, l’université ayant remporté le plus de victoires remporte le tournoi. Je représentais le club de danse car je fais partie du groupe de danse irlandaise. Les filles de Bangor ont fait de très beaux passages de danse, malheureusement Aberyswyth a gagné dans la catégorie danse.
