Imam zelo neumno primerjalnojezikoslovno vprašanje, na katerega ni treba odgovoriti, ker vem, da je to potem nekako kot delanje domače naloge za nekoga drugega (čeprav ni za domačo nalogo!! samo nočem blekniti neumnosti in se osmešiti pred velikimi in pomembnimi jezikoslovnimi ljudmi :( ). Sta sovpad instrumentala in dativa v stari angleščini ter ablativa in genetiva v slovanskih jezikih sorodna?

(In a je to razlog, da so naše časovne strukture v genetivu ("tistega leta ...") - bi morale drugače biti v ablativu? Bojim se, da se mi je v glavi vse pomešalo!)

Brez slabe vesti lahko tole sporočilo poroma naravnost v koš, čisto razumem!

Pri sovpadu (oz. sinkretizmu) sklonov gre – ko govorimo o različnih jezikovnih družinah – najpogosteje za paralelne razvoje, torej razvoje, ki so si tipološko enaki, ampak genetsko nepovezani.*

*Ko v primerjalnem jezikoslovju govorimo o sorodnosti, imamo ponavadi v mislih genetsko sorodnost (sorodne stvari v različnih jezikih, ki se jih da direktno izvesti iz neke skupne predstopnje teh jezikov; npr. sinkretizem genitiva in ablativa singulara v slovanščini in baltščini, ki ne le da se v obeh sploh zgodi, ampak tudi v obeh iz istih morfemov in na enak način: v tematski sklanjatvi ablativ zamenja genitiv, v ostalih sklanjatvah pa genitiv nadomesti ablativ – ker se torej tudi oblikovno ujemata, se tak sinkretizem predpostavlja že za prabaltoslovanščino). Po drugi strani pa o tipologiji govorimo, ko gre za istovrsten proces, ki pa ni (nujno) genetsko povezan, torej se lahko pojavlja v različnih časovnih obdobjih na različnih koncih sveta. Laično se tudi za takšne povezave uporablja beseda „sorodnost“, ampak se v jezikoslovju temu izogibamo, ker, kot nakazano zgoraj, lahko implicira povezanost na veliko večji ravni, kot je mišljeno. Torej, razen če se ne da eksplicitno pokazati, da se je sovpad zgodil na neki skupni predstopnji dveh jezikov, gre torej samo za paralelizem, kjer neke direktne povezave ni.

Podoben sinkretizem, kot se je zgodil v stari angleščini, se je zgodil tudi v stari grščini, v keltskih jezikih itd. in je tipološko pogost proces, sploh v jezikih, v katerih se širi raba predlogov oz. predložnih zvez napram brezpredložnim sklonskim oblikam (prim. tudi lokativ in instrumental v slovenščini, ki se obvezno rabita s predlogi), za informacijo o razmerju med besedami pa torej sklonilo ni več tako ključno. Ta proces lahko opazujemo tudi čisto pred domačim pragom, ker se v nekaterih prominentnih narečjih (gorenjščina) trenutno dogaja sovpad dativa in lokativa (pri kom : pri komu; je včasih prav zanimivo brati članke na spletu in ugotavljati, če je avtor gorenjec :P čeprav tudi to prodira širše), ali pa tudi širše v slovanskem svetu (kot se je pošalil nek kolega iz Srbije „na jugu Srbije imaju možda dva padeža – tri u vikendom“).

Kar se tiče „tistega leta“ je pa to izvorno genitivna struktura (genitivus temporis), pa tudi sicer ima genitiv veliko več vlog od ablativa (ki je res večinoma omejen le na izhodiščno mesto).

Also, bereite dich darauf vor, ein echter Sprach-Zauberer zu werden! Der erste Trick in deinem Zauberbuch? Die Deklinationen! Ja, du hast richtig gehört. Latein hat mehr Fälle als ein Krimi-Autor. Nominativ, Genitiv, Dativ, Akkusativ, Ablativ—als ob es nicht ausreichen würde, nur einen zu haben!

Und dann haben wir die Zeitstufen: Präsens, Perfekt, Imperfekt, Plusquamperfekt. Die klingen wie Zaubersprüche, oder? Sie sind im Grunde genommen die Zauberstäbe der Lateingrammatik. Mit ihnen kannst du die Zeit manipulieren!

Aber warte, da ist noch mehr! Vergiss nicht die Konjugationen. Nein, das ist keine lateinische Tanzform. Es geht darum, wie Verben sich ändern, je nachdem, wer etwas tut. Ist es er, sie oder es? Ist es ein Gott, ein Gladiator oder vielleicht sogar eine Göttin? Je nachdem ändert sich das Verb. Tja, in Latein ist eben alles möglich!

Also, schnapp dir deine Toga und deine Tafeln und mach dich bereit, in die magische Welt der lateinischen Grammatik einzutauchen. Denn wie sagt man so schön? "Veni, vidi, vici!" Und vertrau mir, wenn du einmal den Dreh raus hast, wirst du definitiv das Gefühl haben, die lateinische Grammatik besiegt zu haben!

Blüchers Rheinübergang hing früher in jedem preussischen Patrioten-Wohnzimmer. Bei uns, wo der Patriarch* gerne bei Tisch sagte, daß “Kartoffoin bleed mocha”, war es mehr ein selbstironischer Gag.

Für Jahre war 24mm mein weitestes Winkel. Seit gestern habe ich endlich ein 20mm Objektiv. Die Testergebnis-Jockeys im Unter-, im Zwischennetz** sind nicht zufrieden mit dem Teil (Randabfall, Verzerrung, nicht-so-super-scharf), aber wer sich der Photographie mithilfe von technischen Kennzahlen zu nähern versucht, ist meines Erachtens sowieso auf dem Holzweg. 

Ich sehe, wie fett ich während der Covid-Hysterie geworden bin. Immerhin hat es den Vorteil, daß ich inzwischen die Körperwärme in einem ungeahnten Ausmaß zu halten in der Lage mich finde. Bis runter zu +1° Celsius kann ich jetzt ohne Handschuhe radeln, was einen großen Unterschied macht, wenn man unterwegs ganz gerne mal ein Bildchen knipst.

Und auch nach einem Schiffsunglück würde ich bei meinem aktuellen Trainingsstand wahrscheinlich entscheidende Minuten länger überleben. Früher, vor Covid, 75Kilo bei einsneunzig, wäre ich bei normalen Frühlingstemperaturen schon nach 1 Minute kieloben den Rhein herabgetrieben. Wie ein steifgefrorenes Echsentier. Heute würde ich mich wohl ans Ufer retten können, um erst da an Unterkühlung zu sterben. Man sieht, alles hat seine guten Seiten.

In chapter 26 we're still in Cabeswater. The gang has just found out about the trees speaking Latin, so there’s a lot to talk about here.

Commenting on an earlier post of mine, @verruecktes-kind told me that a mistake I had pointed out in Ronan’s use of Latin had actually been fixed in the German translation – so the translators (Sandra Knuffinke and Jessika Komina) obviously worked very thoroughly. Thanks to @verruecktes-kind for being so observant to notice this change, as well as for letting me know!

That’s why I asked a friend of mine, who owns German copies of the series, if I could have a look at those, especially concerning this chapter here. Lo and behold, the translators fixed the mistakes here as well. They even corrected some of Gansey’s parts, even though he is actually supposed to stumble through speaking Latin (and is scolded for his underwhelming Latin skills by Ronan).

So, here’s a comparison of the Latin used in the original English version vs. the fixed German version:

“Salve” -> “Salvete”  Like Ronan says, salvere actually means to be well, so the Romans used the imperative be well as a greeting. Weirdly, Blue's response to Ronan’s explanation (“Super job") sounds just a tad sarcastic, which is inexplicable to me, as people always seem fascinated when I tell them fun facts about Latin .. cough cough. Anyway, the singular you was switched to the plural you here, because they want to greet the trees, plural.

“Loquere tu nobis?” -> “Loqueminine nobis?” – “Will you speak to us?” The commanding-sounding (singular you) imperative became the plural you futur I and ne was added, which serves to phrase it as a question.

“Hic gaudemus. Gratias tibi ... loquere – loqui pro nobis.” This is Gansey struggling while trying to thank the trees for speaking to them, which was kept in the German edition.

“Cur non te audimus?” -> “Cur vos non audimus?” - “Why don’t we hear you?” Singular you became plural you.

“Si experfacere via, erimus in debitum.” -> “Si experfacies viam, erimus in debito.” – “If you wake the road, we’ll be in your debt.” Experfacere is the infinite form, they changed it to second person singular and used the future tense (Futur I). The nominative via was switched to the accusative viam and the accusative in debitum to the ablativ in debito.

“Valde frigida. [...] Amabo te, ubi exitum?“ -> “Valde frigidum est. Dic mihi, ubi exitum sit!” - “It’s very cold. Tell me where the exit is!” Instead of bits and pieces, proper sentences were formed. But honestly, I don’t think Gansey would know how to use the subjunctive 🙈 . So I would have actually left this one the way it was.

"Gratias. Reveniemus." – “Thank you. We’ll come back.”

Kudos again to the German translators for not simply copying the Latin parts! Here's their website if you're curious.
