Despite its green image, Ireland has surprisingly little forest. [...] [M]ore than 80% of the island of Ireland was [once] covered in trees. [...] [O]f that 11% of the Republic of Ireland that is [now] forested, the vast majority (9% of the country) is planted with [non-native] spruces like the Sitka spruce [in commercial plantations], a fast growing conifer originally from Alaska which can be harvested after just 15 years. Just 2% of Ireland is covered with native broadleaf trees.

[I]ndustrial [...] oil palm plantations [...] have proliferated in tropical regions in many parts of the world, often built at the expense of mangrove and humid forest lands, with the aim to transform them from 'worthless swamp' to agro-industrial complexes [...]. Another clear case [...] comes from the southernmost area in the Colombian Pacific [...]. Here, since the early 1980s, the forest has been destroyed and communities displaced to give way to oil palm plantations. Inexistent in the 1970s, by the mid-1990s they had expanded to over 30,000 hectares. The monotony of the plantation - row after row of palm as far as you can see, a green desert of sorts - replaced the diverse, heterogenous and entangled world of forest and communities.

But efforts to increase global tree cover to limit climate change have skewed towards erecting plantations of fast-growing trees [...] [because] planting trees can demonstrate results a lot quicker than natural forest restoration. [...] [But] ill-advised tree planting can unleash invasive species [...]. [In India] [t]o maximize how much timber these forests yielded, British foresters planted pines from Europe and North America in extensive plantations in the Himalayan region [...] and introduced acacia trees from Australia [...]. One of these species, wattle (Acacia mearnsii) [...] was planted in [...] the Western Ghats. This area is what scientists all a biodiversity hotspot – a globally rare ecosystem replete with species. Wattle has since become invasive and taken over much of the region’s mountainous grasslands. Similarly, pine has spread over much of the Himalayas and displaced native oak trees while teak has replaced sal, a native hardwood, in central India. Both oak and sal are valued for [...] fertiliser, medicine and oil. Their loss [...] impoverished many [local and Indigenous people]. [...]
India’s national forest policy [...] aims for trees on 33% of the country’s area. Schemes under this policy include plantations consisting of a single species such as eucalyptus or bamboo which grow fast and can increase tree cover quickly, demonstrating success according to this dubious measure. Sometimes these trees are planted in grasslands and other ecosystems where tree cover is naturally low. [...] The success of forest restoration efforts cannot be measured by tree cover alone. The Indian government’s definition of “forest” still encompasses plantations of a single tree species, orchards and even bamboo, which actually belongs to the grass family. This means that biennial forest surveys cannot quantify how much natural forest has been restored, or convey the consequences of displacing native trees with competitive plantation species or identify if these exotic trees have invaded natural grasslands which have then been falsely recorded as restored forests. [...] Planting trees does not necessarily mean a forest is being restored. And reviving ecosystems in which trees are scarce is important too.

Nations and companies are competing to appropriate the last piece of available “untapped” forest that can provide the most amount of “environmental services.” [...] When British Empire forestry was first established as a disciplinary practice in India, [...] it proscribed private interests and initiated a new system of forest management based on a logic of utilitarian [extraction] [...]. Rather than the actual survival of plants or animals, the goal of this forestry was focused on preventing the exhaustion of resource extraction. [...]

---
At first glance, the statistics tell a hopeful story: Chile’s forests are expanding. […] On the ground, however, a different scene plays out: monocultures have replaced diverse natural forests [...]. At the crux of these [...] narratives is the definition of a single word: “forest.” [...] Pinochet’s wave of [...] [laws] included Forest Ordinance 701, passed in 1974, which subsidized the expansion of tree plantations [...] and gave the National Forestry Corporation control of Mapuche lands. This law set in motion an enormous expansion in fiber-farms, which are vast expanses of monoculture plantations Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus species grown for paper manufacturing and timber. [T]hese new plantations replaced native forests […]. According to a recent study in Landscape and Urban Planning, timber plantations expanded by a factor of ten from 1975 to 2007, and now occupy 43 percent of the South-central Chilean landscape. [...] While the confusion surrounding the definition of “forest” may appear to be an issue of semantics, Dr. Francis Putz [...] warns otherwise in a recent review published in Biotropica. […] Monoculture plantations are optimized for a single product, whereas native forests offer [...] water regulation, hosting biodiversity, and building soil fertility. [...][A]ccording to Putz, the distinction between plantations and native forests needs to be made clear. “[...] [A]nd the point that plantations are NOT forests needs to be made repeatedly [...]."

Have You Seriously Considered The Option Of Engineered Wood Flooring ?
Tumblr media
Wood's natural beauty flooring brings warmth and charm into any space of the homes, and a range of different species to choose from, including white and red oak, walnut, and Ash - along with exotic hardwoods such as acacia, which have distinct styles and features to each room in which it is installed. Oak is especially suited for traditional designs; walnut offers rich shades and is strong enough to cover most scratches, while ash is notable due to its low cost and distinct grain patterns that work very well with older houses in addition.
Traditional solid wood floors are made of one piece wooden material, which has teeth and tongues at both ends to create a smooth installation. Affixed to wooden beams commonly referred to joists or floating on concrete subfloors, solid wood floors are sanded and refinished many times more than engineered flooring made of wood.
Engineered wood flooring comes with the base of plywood, which is finished with real wood veneers for toughness, which makes it suitable for larger widths and longer lengths than solid wood flooring. Engineered flooring also can be put down with nails or glued down to avoid expanding and contracting due to temperature changes.
We are Brilliant Wood Flooring, we can provide an amazing selection of finishes and stain colors on engineered and solid flooring. The options range from oil polyurethane as well as natural shellacs, and oils with their own techniques for refinishing. To choose the best finish ideal for you, your flooring's look and durability will depend on the finish is selected, the most frequently used finishes are oil and polyurethane finishes. Naturally shellacs also exist and their sturdiness could vary significantly from urethane and polyurethane floor finishes with regards to their design and endurance over time. More effective is clicking here to visit our official website and learn the details about Wood Flooring .
After you've agreed to a floor and price then a trial box will be shipped for review. This will allow you to experience the floor you've designed before making an informed decision. The cost will be paid back to your credit card once the floor has been ordered. Anyone who needs to learn about Custom Flooring, they will be able to visit this website.
To choose a suitable finish for the wood flooring, it is important to take aesthetics and style into consideration. These types of polyurethanes can be suitable for families that have children or pets, while oil-modified polyurethane might provide greater protection over time, but could prove harder to refinish for future refinishing.
vimeo
The European Oak Flooring offers high aesthetic variation while still being robust enough to be refinished several times throughout its lifespan. This brushed, polished finish enhances every natural aspect of the grain as well as the wood's texture. It can be enhanced by using the different options available for brushing depth and the width of the brush. Partially sawed marks accent natural grain. Full saw marks impart rustic appeal Indentation marks help to disguise wear and tear. this the ideal choice for use areas.
Brilliant Wood Flooring installed an remarkable engineered wood floor in our new house and removed all skirting and did amazing work! George and his team were professionally, accommodating and reasonable in their pricing. They were sanded and polished at an excellent standard particularly in hard-to-reach areas such as behind pipes, fixed seating, etc. They are highly recommended!

Beyond the Bowl: Elevate Snack Time with a Premium Dry Fruit Tray
Let's be honest, grabbing a handful of trail mix from the plastic bag isn't exactly an inspiring way to fuel your body. Dry fruits are nutritional powerhouses, bursting with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but sometimes their presentation doesn't quite match their potential. This is where a premium dry fruit tray swoops in, transforming a healthy snack into a delightful ritual.
Imagine this: you're hosting a casual get-together with friends. Instead of reaching for the usual chip bowl, you unveil a stunning wooden tray with compartments overflowing with vibrant dried fruits and glistening nuts. The rich color of the mango wood complements the ruby red cranberries and emerald green pistachios. It's a visual feast that sparks conversation and instantly elevates the snacking experience.
Choosing Your Culinary Canvas: The Material Matters
Your premium dry fruit tray isn't just a holder, it's a statement piece. The material you choose sets the tone, so consider your personal style and the vibe you want to create. Here are some popular options, each with its own charm:
Warm Embrace of Wood: For a timeless and natural aesthetic, wood reigns supreme. Opt for hardwoods like acacia or mango for their durability and resistance to warping. Look for a tray with a clear food-safe finish to protect the wood and make cleaning a breeze. Imagine the warmth it brings to your coffee table, inviting everyone to gather and indulge.
Crystal Clear Sophistication: For a touch of elegance, crystal trays add a touch of glamour to your table. They're perfect for formal occasions or when you want to create a truly luxurious presentation. Picture the sunlight catching the crystal facets, casting a playful dance of light on the dried apricots nestled within.
Modern Minimalism with Stainless Steel: If your style leans towards sleek and modern, a stainless steel tray is a perfect fit. Its clean lines and cool touch offer a contemporary aesthetic. Plus, it's incredibly durable, easy to clean, and won't absorb any unwanted odors or stains. Imagine the brushed steel reflecting the soft glow of candlelight during a cozy movie night.
A Touch of Marble Luxury: For a truly decadent feel, natural stone like marble adds a touch of sophistication. The cool surface is naturally perfect for keeping your dry fruits fresh, making it a functional and beautiful choice. Just picture the cool marble contrasting with the vibrant colors of the dried fruit medley, creating a stunning centerpiece for your living room.
Finding the Perfect Fit: Design Delights
The design of your premium dry fruit tray goes hand-in-hand with the material. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Compartmentalization: Do you prefer a simple divided tray, or do you crave organization with multiple compartments for a meticulously curated selection? Consider the types of dry fruits you typically enjoy and choose a tray that allows you to showcase them all.
Shape Up: Round, rectangular, or square? The choice depends on your personal preference and available space. Rectangular trays are great for buffets or long tables, while round trays offer a more intimate feel for smaller gatherings.
Handle with Care: Trays with handles make them easier to carry and present, especially if they're made of heavier materials like marble or crystal. Imagine effortlessly carrying your tray laden with delicious treats to share with friends on the patio.
Beyond Beauty: Functionality for Everyday Use
While aesthetics are important, a premium dry fruit tray should also be functional for everyday use. Here are some additional features to consider:
Keeping it Fresh: Lids are a must-have for keeping your dry fruits fresh and protected from dust and curious insects. Opt for trays with airtight lids to ensure optimal preservation.
Cleaning Up: Make sure the tray and any compartments are easy to clean to maintain hygiene. Look for dishwasher-safe options for added convenience. Nobody wants a beautiful tray that's a nightmare to clean!
Space Saving Stacks: If storage space is a concern, consider stackable trays that maximize space efficiency. Imagine neatly stacking your trays away when not in use, ready to be pulled out for your next snack session.
The Art of Snacking: Curating a Feast for the Eyes
Once you've chosen your perfect premium dry fruit tray, it's time to unleash your inner artist! Here are some tips for creating an inviting display that will have everyone reaching for a handful:
Variety is the Spice of Life: Include a selection of colorful and textural dry fruits. Think cashews, pistachios, and almonds for some crunch, alongside plump raisins, tart cranberries, and chewy dried apricots and figs.
Seasonal Flair: Don't be afraid to embrace the seasons! During the holidays, add a festive touch with dried cranberries or cherries. In the summer incorporate dried mango slices or dehydrated pineapple chunks for a tropical twist.
Visual Appeal Matters: Play with color and texture. Arrange the dry fruits in a visually appealing way, creating sections or patterns that complement each other. Use larger nuts as anchors and sprinkle smaller ones in between. Think of it as a tiny edible masterpiece!
Edible Accents: For a touch of elegance and a delightful aroma, add a few sprigs of fresh rosemary or mint. They not only look inviting but also add a refreshing touch to the overall presentation.
With a premium dry fruit tray and a curated selection of delicious treats, you can elevate your snacking experience from mundane to mindful. It's a simple yet impactful way to transform a healthy habit into a delightful ritual, one that invites you to slow down, savor the moment, and appreciate the beauty of nourishing your body. So ditch the boring bowl and embrace the art of mindful snacking with a premium dry fruit tray – your taste buds and your health will thank you for it!

Planting trees does not necessarily mean a forest is being restored.
---
But efforts to increase global tree cover to limit climate change have skewed towards erecting plantations of fast-growing trees. The reasons are obvious: planting trees can demonstrate results a lot quicker than natural forest restoration. This is helpful if the objective is generating a lot of timber quickly or certifying carbon credits which people and firms buy to supposedly offset their emissions. [...] [I]ll-advised tree planting can unleash invasive species [...]. For more than 200 years India has experimented with tree plantations, offering important lessons about the consequences different approaches to restoring forests have on local communities and the wider environment. This rare long-term perspective should be heeded [...].
Britain extended its influence over India and controlled much of its affairs [...] from the mid-18th century onwards. Between 1857 and 1947, the Crown ruled the country directly and turned its attention to the country’s forests. Britain needed great quantities of timber to lay railway sleepers and build ships in order to transport the cotton, rubber and tea it took from India.
Through the Indian Forest Act of 1865, forests with high-yielding timber trees such as teak, sal and deodar became state property. To maximise how much timber these forests yielded, British colonial authorities restricted the rights of local people to harvest much beyond grass and bamboo. [...] Meanwhile plantations of teak (Tectona grandis), a species well adapted to India’s hot and humid climate and a source of durable and attractive timber, spread aggressively. [...]
---
[G]rasslands and open scrub forest gave way to teak monocultures.
Eucalyptus and other exotic trees which hadn’t evolved in India were introduced from around 1790. British foresters planted pines from Europe and North America in extensive plantations in the Himalayan region as a source of resin and introduced acacia trees from Australia for timber, fodder and fuel.
One of these species, wattle (Acacia mearnsii), first introduced in 1861 with a few hundred thousand saplings, was planted in the Nilgiris district of the Western Ghats.
Both oak and sal are valued for fuel, fodder, fertiliser, medicine and oil. Their loss [...] impoverished many.
---
India’s national forest policy [...] aims for trees on 33% of the country’s area. Schemes under this policy include plantations consisting of a single species such as eucalyptus or bamboo which grow fast and can increase tree cover quickly, demonstrating success according to this dubious measure. Sometimes these trees are planted in grasslands and other ecosystems where tree cover is naturally low. The result is that afforestation harms rural and indigenous people who depend on these ecosystems [...].
In the Kachchh grasslands of western India communities were able to restore grasslands by removing the invasive gando bawal (meaning “mad tree”) first introduced by British foresters in the late 19th century. [...]
The success of forest restoration efforts cannot be measured by tree cover alone. [...]
Planting trees does not necessarily mean a forest is being restored. And reviving ecosystems in which trees are scarce is important too.

What is The Appeal of Hardwood Picnic Tables for Outdoor Living?
Forget flimsy plastic and forget scorching metal. When it comes to creating an outdoor haven that's both stylish and built to last, there's one true champion: the mighty hardwood picnic tables. But what makes these bad boys reign supreme over the competition?
Buckle up, because we're about to spill the tea (or should we say lemonade?) on why hardwood picnic tables deserve a permanent spot in your backyard.
Looks That Last: The Timeless Appeal of Hardwood Picnic Table
Imagine this: crisp summer air, the scent of barbecue wafting through the breeze, and laughter echoing as you gather around a table that looks like it belongs in a magazine spread. That's the magic of outdoor picnic tables crafted from hardwood.
Unlike plastic or metal, which can look cheap and out of place, hardwood boasts a rich, natural beauty that elevates your entire outdoor space. The warm wood grain adds a touch of sophistication and blends seamlessly with your landscaping, making your picnic table the envy of the neighbourhood.

Outdoor Picnic Tables: Built to Withstand the Elements
Let's face it, outdoor furniture needs to be tough. Unlike their softer counterparts that crumble under the pressure of sun and rain, hardwoods like teak, acacia, or cedar are nature's warriors. These dense woods shrug off harsh sunlight, torrential downpours, and even the occasional snowball fight.
Simply put, hardwood picnic tables are built to endure - the perfect companion for all your outdoor adventures, from backyard barbecues to family reunions that get a little rowdy.
Sustainable Style for the Eco-Conscious Picnicker
For those who care about the planet as much as they care about their next picnic, hardwood picnic tables offer a victory lap. Many hardwood varieties used for outdoor furniture come from responsibly managed forests, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Plus, the incredible durability of hardwood means you won't be replacing your table every few years, further reducing waste. So go ahead, fire up the grill and celebrate your sustainable style choice!
Comfort You Can Actually Feel (Especially After That Third Hot Dog)
Remember those metal picnic tables that leave you feeling like you've been sitting on ice cubes? Not with hardwood! Outdoor picnic tables made from hardwood offer a naturally comfortable seating experience.
The smooth texture is pleasant to the touch, and the slight give of the wood provides better ergonomics than its rigid counterparts. Now you can relax, enjoy the company, and maybe even squeeze in an after-dinner nap without feeling like a human pretzel.
So ditch the flimsy alternatives and embrace the timeless appeal of hardwood picnic tables. Your backyard (and your family) will thank you for it!
