I am a hardcore Emily Oster devotee. She is an economist and professor who wrote the book on pregnancy, parsing oceans of data and guidance to help rational parents-to-be understand which restrictions are based in science and which are merely taboo.
So I appreciate her new, thorough FAQ for New York magazine on COVID-19 risks, which touches upon outdoor and indoor dining. There’s been a lot of debate publicly, and also privately, in my friend groups and work Slacks, about whether dining out at all is dangerous or ethical and how to best support restaurants, industry workers, and (frankly) our own mental health. (I mentioned this a couple weeks ago, but it’s still top of mind.)
Oster’s take is that dining outside is riskier than taking a socially distanced walk, but safer than many other scenarios. You would need to have a fairly prolonged and mask-free interaction with a restaurant worker or fellow customer to give it to them (or get it from them) outside.
In my outings, I’ve also been pleasantly surprised at how good many places are at following safety protocols, and at how many restaurants have pivoted to counter-service models, where the patron orders at a counter and food is brought to the table, cutting out the interaction with waitstaff. Watching the news about parties and packed patios can overshadow the restaurants that are putting in real work, and may scare some people into a binary mindset: staying in = good, going out = bad. Not all outdoor dining is created equal.
As for indoor dining, Oster says, “The simplest rule is probably: Indoors with other people is bad. If you have to do it, keep it brief and wear a mask.” Bars, meanwhile, should be “avoided at all costs.” Which means no matter how safe the outdoor operations are, here in the Northeast we’ll be back to takeout come winter. I’ll enjoy what I can for now.

Salon Auto Sport de Quebec Celebrates 50th Anniversary

I doubt very much that when the Piston Poppers Car Club introduced custom car shows to Montreal and Quebec City anyone of them thought the shows would still be around fifty years later. Yes there were other shows before, but none in the grand scale of the Piston Popper’s celebrations.
Today the Salon Auto Sport de Quebec [city] is the province’s oldest continuously running indoor car show. It has succeeded where others died, it has withstood changing trends and transcended generations of car enthusiasts, and this year was no exception, bringing in people of all ages.
Three years ago, with his eyes set on retirement, Mr. Jacques Picard who had partnered with founding Piston Popper member Aurele Collette pictured below fifth from left sold the show to the region’s drag race promoter Martin D’Anjou who seems prepared to carry it for the next few decades.

Stealing the show were the three handcrafted beauties from Rick Dore’s stable of creativity, the Illusion (above,forefront) the Black Pearl (the show’s poster child) and the Shangri-La, below.

Our old friend Apostolis, better known as,  “Spanky” of V8 Custom Guitars (left) recently joined forces with Rick Dore of RD Kustoms fame to create two wild guitars. Spanky’s wood carved creations capture the cars’ features down to the minutest detail and pay homage to Rick’s rolling works of art. While still in rough form they were unveiled for the first time at the show to tease show goers of what to expect.

Martin D’Anjou commissioned The Black Pearl inspired guitar to be auctioned off later this year with the proceeds going to the Quebec Cancer Foundation and Rick Dore hopes to sell the Illusion to whoever buys the car, which will also go on sale later this year.

It’s been six years since I first met Jean-Francois Launier (above left with yours truly) in Detroit. He stopped by the Adrenaline booth to chat and sign some autographs. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, let me quickly just say he is Canada’s foremost custom coach builder and only the second Canadian to win the prestigious Ridler Award. The Ridler is given only to the crème-de-la-crème of builders and JF was on the short list twice before winning it with outrageous ’64 Buick Riviera, taking the trophy back to home to Osoyoos BC. (you can catch his journey to the Ridler in Klassic Plus issue #3)

  Good Interior Design Is Universal
   The personal interior design of our homes is influenced by what we know, what we feel, and whom we choose to share our most important, memory-making moments with.  The profession of interior design has always been one with global connections. Today we want to pause and celebrate the American Craftsmen.
An American Construction Site
Last summer when this renovation began, the flying of “Ole Glory”, was an everyday reminder of the opportunities we have working in America.  Today, instead of sharing longshot after photos of this beautiful home, we’d like to share photos of the detailed talents of some of the American craftsmen.
The Talents Of American Craftsmen
After the space planning, interior design, and mechanics of a project are underway, comes the task of making everything become a reality.  Finishes are the foundation of the interiors décor.  Exquisite finishes create exceptional design.
Natural birdseye, burled maple custom doors inspired by a vintage guitar.  Crafted in the contractor’s shop.
  Easy to be impressed.  Behind these custom panels are a refrigerator, freezer and pantry.  However, look more closely and appreciate the cross-grain pattern on the left and right doors flanking the smooth center panel.
While we always appreciate a good drywall finisher, we admit we have a crush for this team.  Flush reveal base, and inlaid linear hvac supplies, show a true talent!
Interior Design and Electronics
Next, we are totally impressed with the electronics of today,  This TV retreats into the cabinet!  We’re equally impressed with the vendor’s attention to the project and his “on-call” availability when we couldn’t get something on or off!
Design Details That Eliminate A Designer’s Pet Peeves
We’ve never liked obvious seams in a full slab splash.  Although we can take absolutely no credit for this subtle overlay, we will certainly remember how design-oriented this splash is!  Condos always have strange chases that are a designer’s nightmare.  No problem for us, as the contractor jumped thru hoops to install this stainless steel clad.
One last “wow”.  These high gloss cabinets are wood and finished by a local auto paint shop.  Amazing craftsmanship.
Bathroom Interior Design-Where The Details Matter
No other area in our homes is as important as our bathrooms.  These are the spaces that get us ready for whatever the day holds and then pamper us each night.  This shower has a single piece of quartzite, backlit, that starts this custom design.  Equally as impressive is the tile on the ceiling with the carefully planned pattern placement, and the recessed french drain on the floor.  Nearly every trade on this project contributed to this shower.
The Trades Make Good Design Happen
In all design projects there comes a time when the designer has a vision of which the materials may not be easily available, and the concept “has never been done”.  Not an issue as the vendor listened, the contractor punted and the installer created to make this concept flawlessly happen.  This project is one quality installation after another.
Before we close this post, with our tribute to America on her birthday, we’d like to thank Acadian Builders, and all of the exceptionally talented craftsmen, who gave this interior’s design real “legs”.  Additionally, to our clients, our sincere appreciation for the opportunity to work together creating this welcoming home.

Ancient Mesopotamia was in the Americas
The Tower of Babel
The Cholula pyramid, aka, The Tower of Babel is the largest pyramid in the world and one of the oldest too, because we are dealing with a step pyramid here, which were your first pyramids. This image is a small scale version of the real Cholula Pyramid in Puebla, Mexico.

Well, they have it written in their His-story (history) books that Ancient Mesopotamia is the birthplace of civilization or the cradle of civilization, because of the Fertile Crescent which gave rise to the oldest civilization, Ancient Sumer (Khmer/Khumer/khem). However, they forgot to transport all of the Sumerian artifacts that they found in the Americas to the Middle East. According to Reuters, over 3,800 Sumerian Artifacts are being given to Iraq to help support the false notion of the East being older than the West (the Far East): https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-iraq-artifacts/u-s-returns-thousands-of-smuggled-ancient-artifacts-to-iraq-idUSKBN1I326R?il=0&fbclid=IwAR0A601JpBwKkFuNTeN7lN1dUPeNw468DzgzGxtZTc8tCM2iyyZRJfldsKQ. I laughed at the World News article from Reuters that I shared, because they needed more evidence than just the few Sumerian clay tablets that they took from the Americas to the Mesopotamia region, which is now present day Iraq, just to sell this Ancient Middle East story to begin with. It takes a really good thief to be able to smuggle over 3,800 artifacts, including stone tablets, from Iraq to America. How was that possible? You see, there excuse to explain away the 3,800 Sumerian artifacts does not even make sense, therefore, the Sumerian Artifacts were native to the Americas. This is very believable too, because you have already learned via my previous blog posts that America is the True Old world.
The Americas is the real Mesopotamia and the Real Babylon, Sumerian Culture, (see maps in this post) because they have found thousands of Sumerian artifacts in the Americas: North, South, and Central America. According to Dr. Clyde Winters book, “Ancient Scripts of South America: The Sumerians in South America,” the Sumerians were in South America, because Sumerian scripts were found in South America.
THE TOWER OF BABEL WAS THE CHOLULA PYRAMID IN MEXICO:
According to the book, “The North Americans of Antiquity: Their Origin, Migrations, and Type of Civilization Considered,” by John T. Short, “The entire Region bore the name of Anahuac Xicalanco, – the first great exploit of the Olmec chiefs, the destruction of the giants, we observe was performed at some distance from their earliest settlement. The state of Puebla became their chosen ground, and quite soon after the above achievements they undertook the building of the famous Tower of Babel. Several authors state that the erection of the Pyramid of Cholula was done in memory of the erection of the Tower of Babel, at which it is claimed the ancestors of the Olmec Chiefs were present” [end quote].
Herodotus and Diodorus confirm that the Temple of Jupiter Belus, resembles the Temple of Babel in Teocallis of Anahuac. “It is impossible to read the descriptions, which Herodotus and Diodorus Siculus have left us of the Temple of Jupiter Belus, without being struck with the resemblance of that Babylonian monument to the Teocallis of Anahuac” [end quote from, “The North Americans of Antiquity: Their Origin, Migrations, and Type of Civilization Considered,” by John T. Short]. In this blog post is a small scale image of the Cholula pyramid, aka, the Tower of Babel.
LOWER MESOPOTAMIA WAS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER SYSTEM.
The Old Testament Map of America confirms the fact that the first Fertile Crescent was the Mississippi River system and the fertile lands along the mighty Miss-Isis (Mississippi) river, because it appears from the Old Testament Map that Lower Mesopotamia was the fertile lands along the Mississippi River system. This makes perfect sense to me, because the oldest indigenous people in the World, “The Washitaw Muurs,” used the mighty Mississippi River as their fertile crescent, since the annual flooding of the Mississippi River produced mineral rich silt that produced fertile lands along the Mississippi River system. The Fertile lands along the Mississippi River fed most of the people in the Old World with wheat, corn, beans, rice (all of which are native to the Americas) and etc., so it’s very possible that the Mississippi River system was your first fertile crescent; especially, in light of the fact that the Mississippi River system still is responsible for feeding most of the World today.
The Washitaw were known as the ancient ones and the Mound Builders, because they built all of the mounds along the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River was also your first Nile River. This Old Testament Map of Ancient America shows you Babylon (Sumer), Lower Mesopotamia, Lower Egypt, and Jerusalem, all in North America. Credits for this map is given to UBNEWZ for the great share. The Americas was Ancient Sumer, because Amurru was the Sumerian/Akkadian god of the Amorites (Amerites), aka, the mound Builders, the Amurru Washitaw Dedugdahmoundyah Muurs/Mu/ Maur/Moor/Meroe. The Amurru Washitaw Dedugdahmoundyah Mu’urs are the oldest indigenous people in the world, according to the UNITED NATIONS. Now, let’s see if we can tie the Sumerian god Amurru (the Westerner/the Serpent/the dragon) to an ancient tribe of people in the Americas. The original name of America was Amurru, according to the Webster 1936 Universal Dictionary, the word “American is defined as an Aboriginal or one of the various copper color natives found on the American Continents by the Europeans. The shaggy tops of last summer’s grasses are poking out from the newly fallen snow. I can still sense the important waterfowl habitat of the Tantramar Marsh which surrounds me, but this white coating has changed the landscape to look like every other town in New Brunswick.
I had been here in early June 2016, and I enjoyed a stroll along the boardwalk of the Waterfowl Park. The leaves had just popped out and were a fresh pale green against the white birch. It had been chilly, and the resident ducks were mostly Mallards.  On that trip I had qualified Sackville for my Top 20 Maritime Outdoor Escapes,  Today I wanted to justify my choice.

I am following a slippery snow-covered road on the outskirts of the town. I blindly follow the directions of my GPS to the Campbell Carriage Factory.  It is closed for the winter and while the website states it will open if you make an appointment, I have not done so. I had read it was considered one of the finest examples of 19th-century industry in North America. It was built about 1838 and is a designated national and provincial historic site.
I follow the wooden plank fence to the parking area. Three buildings stand close together: one is the factory, beside it is the carriage storage, and a smaller building at the back is the blacksmith shop.

There is a lovely view of the Tantramar Marsh behind the museum. I am drawn towards the openness, planning to circle the buildings and look for the national historic plaques. However a blast of frigid wind pummels me, so I retreat to the side of the barn for shelter.  I will peek in the windows instead. I move along to each window frame jumping up repeatedly to see inside but the windows are too high (or I am too short).
I dash from one sheltered area to the next, landing behind the blacksmith shop. I see no national historic plaques, but I do see a monument at the back of the building. I sweep it clear of snow and ice to read what it says.
The the plaque is titled Arcadians Settle the Tintamarre. It tells a story of three determined brothers, Pierre, Abraham, and Augustine Gaudet, who established a home for themselves here in 1709, after their village in Memramcook, N.B., was destroyed. This led to the settlement of more Acadian folks in the surrounding area. The Acadians were an industrious and resilient people who dug dikes and drained the land to make it useable for growing crops.

The original purchaser of this property was Ronald Campbell. He was a carpenter and a carriage maker by trade with an interesting back story. This factory had been run successfully by several generations of Campbells, until the last two employees were let go and the factory closed it doors for good in 1951.  Ronald Campbell occasionally held employment at the Humphrey and Morice Mill, and that is where I am headed to next.
Situated on what is now Silver Lake, all that remains is a mill stone with a plaque recognizing this property as a historical location.

The mill stone says:
Morice Mills 1821-1939 This site was likely a mill and mill dam built by Acadians in the mid 1700s. English settlers from New England established a grist mill and sawmill here in 1764. A succession of partners operated the mill until 1821, when John Morice, a recent arrival from Scotland, acquired a controlling interest and eventually purchased full title to the mills, mill-dam and mill-pond. The Morice family operated the mills which consisted of a sawmill, carding mill and grist mill, for over 100 years. The millstone to which this plaque is attached came from the grist mill that was located just south of this monument. A large woodworking factory was also part of the mills, where windows, doors, furniture and  wooden boxes were made. After several replacements the old mill dam finally gave way in 1942. And a new concrete dam was built by the Sackville Fish and Game Association in 1952 to re-establish what is known today as Silver Lake.  Lilla Fawcett Park was established by the rotary club of Sackville in 1977 and is owned and maintained by the town of Sackville.
It is too cold for me to stay for long, so I head back into the heart of town. I completely miss the Hammond House, another national historic site, but I am running low on time so continue on to the Sackville Harness Shop. You can read about it in Searching around Sackville, New Brunswick Part 1
Next up is the Boultenhouse, New Brunswick’s only shipwright’s residence, now a museum. It was open till 2 pm and I missed it. Darn. I snap off a few pictures to add to my collection of national historic sites and dash back to my vehicle.

The BOULTENHOUSE HERITAGE CENTRE
The title of the plaque says The SACKVILLE SHIP BUILDING ERA, it is far to long for me to recite to you, believe me. I will have to return to view the three buildings that are part of the museum when I have more time.
Sackville also has a historic railway station for you railway enthusiasts.

I will continue out of town and make one more stop at Fort Beauséjour – Fort Cumberland. I have been here several times but I was missing a plaque for Tonge’s Island, the seventeeth-century capital of Acadia and another national historic site to add to my collection.

I am a bit disappointed in this adventure — the weather was cold and I had so little time.  I wanted to visit Hammond House, the Colville House, and The Owen Art Gallery, which is Canada’s oldest university art gallery. I still haven’t seen the Kath Rutherford Mosaic that graces the entrance to the town hall and I wanted to get to the Tantramar marsh wildlife area.
I rarely miss a good cemetery and the Sackville Rural Cemetery has two important Canadian figures:  Henry C.G. Ketchum, the designer and builder of the Chignecto Railway shipping line; and Rt. Hon. Dr. George Stanley, who was the designer of the Canadian Maple Leaf Flag.
I  had hoped to hike or snowshoe part of the trail that leaves here and ends at the footbridge in Port Elgin. (I covered that end of the trail in my story Bridges To Cross, 2017 New Brunswick. )
I think I validated why I chose Sackville on my 20 best list. I could easily spend a week here but my winter afternoon will have to do.

In my outings, I’ve also been pleasantly surprised at how good many places are at following safety protocols, and at how many restaurants have pivoted to counter-service models, where the patron orders at a counter and food is brought to the table, cutting out the interaction with waitstaff. Watching the news about parties and packed patios can overshadow the restaurants that are putting in real work, and may scare some people into a binary mindset: staying in = good, going out = bad. Not all outdoor dining is created equal. As for indoor dining, Oster says, “The simplest rule is probably: Indoors with other people is bad. If you have to do it, keep it brief and wear a mask.” Bars, meanwhile, should be “avoided at all costs.” Which means no matter how safe the outdoor operations are, here in the Northeast we’ll be back to takeout come winter.
