Things That Are Hard
Some things are harder than they look. Some things are exactly as hard as they look.
Game AI, Intelligent Opponents, Intelligent NPCs
As you already know, "Game AI" is a misnomer. It's NPC behaviour, escort missions, "director" systems that dynamically manage the level of action in a game, pathfinding, AI opponents in multiplayer games, and possibly friendly AI players to fill out your team if there aren't enough humans.
Still, you are able to implement minimax with alpha-beta pruning for board games, pathfinding algorithms like A* or simple planning/reasoning systems with relative ease. Even easier: You could just take an MIT licensed library that implements a cool AI technique and put it in your game.
So why is it so hard to add AI to games, or more AI to games? The first problem is integration of cool AI algorithms with game systems. Although games do not need any "perception" for planning algorithms to work, no computer vision, sensor fusion, or data cleanup, and no Bayesian filtering for mapping and localisation, AI in games still needs information in a machine-readable format. Suddenly you go from free-form level geometry to a uniform grid, and from "every frame, do this or that" to planning and execution phases and checking every frame if the plan is still succeeding or has succeeded or if the assumptions of the original plan no longer hold and a new plan is on order. Intelligent behaviour is orders of magnitude more code than simple behaviours, and every time you add a mechanic to the game, you need to ask yourself "how do I make this mechanic accessible to the AI?"
Some design decisions will just be ruled out because they would be difficult to get to work in a certain AI paradigm.
Even in a game that is perfectly suited for AI techniques, like a turn-based, grid-based rogue-like, with line-of-sight already implemented, can struggle to make use of learning or planning AI for NPC behaviour.
What makes advanced AI "fun" in a game is usually when the behaviour is at least a little predictable, or when the AI explains how it works or why it did what it did. What makes AI "fun" is when it sometimes or usually plays really well, but then makes little mistakes that the player must learn to exploit. What makes AI "fun" is interesting behaviour. What makes AI "fun" is game balance.
You can have all of those with simple, almost hard-coded agent behaviour.
Video Playback
If your engine does not have video playback, you might think that it's easy enough to add it by yourself. After all, there are libraries out there that help you decode and decompress video files, so you can stream them from disk, and get streams of video frames and audio.
You can just use those libraries, and play the sounds and display the pictures with the tools your engine already provides, right?
Unfortunately, no. The video is probably at a different frame rate from your game's frame rate, and the music and sound effect playback in your game engine are probably not designed with syncing audio playback to a video stream.
I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying that it's surprisingly tricky, and even worse, it might be something that can't be built on top of your engine, but something that requires you to modify your engine to make it work.
Stealth Games
Stealth games succeed and fail on NPC behaviour/AI, predictability, variety, and level design. Stealth games need sophisticated and legible systems for line of sight, detailed modelling of the knowledge-state of NPCs, communication between NPCs, and good movement/ controls/game feel.
Making a stealth game is probably five times as difficult as a platformer or a puzzle platformer.
In a puzzle platformer, you can develop puzzle elements and then build levels. In a stealth game, your NPC behaviour and level design must work in tandem, and be developed together. Movement must be fluid enough that it doesn't become a challenge in itself, without stealth. NPC behaviour must be interesting and legible.
Rhythm Games
These are hard for the same reason that video playback is hard. You have to sync up your audio with your gameplay. You need some kind of feedback for when which audio is played. You need to know how large the audio lag, screen lag, and input lag are, both in frames, and in milliseconds.
You could try to counteract this by using certain real-time OS functionality directly, instead of using the machinery your engine gives you for sound effects and background music. You could try building your own sequencer that plays the beats at the right time.
Now you have to build good gameplay on top of that, and you have to write music. Rhythm games are the genre that experienced programmers are most likely to get wrong in game jams. They produce a finished and playable game, because they wanted to write a rhythm game for a change, but they get the BPM of their music slightly wrong, and everything feels off, more and more so as each song progresses.
Online Multi-Player Netcode
Everybody knows this is hard, but still underestimates the effort it takes. Sure, back in the day you could use the now-discontinued ready-made solution for Unity 5.0 to synchronise the state of your GameObjects. Sure, you can use a library that lets you send messages and streams on top of UDP. Sure, you can just use TCP and server-authoritative networking.
It can all work out, or it might not. Your netcode will have to deal with pings of 300 milliseconds, lag spikes, package loss, and maybe recover from five seconds of lost WiFi connections. If your game can't, because it absolutely needs the low latency or high bandwidth or consistency between players, you will at least have to detect these conditions and handle them, for example by showing text on the screen informing the player he has lost the match.
It is deceptively easy to build certain kinds of multiplayer games, and test them on your local network with pings in the single digit milliseconds. It is deceptively easy to write your own RPC system that works over TCP and sends out method names and arguments encoded as JSON. This is not the hard part of netcode. It is easy to write a racing game where players don't interact much, but just see each other's ghosts. The hard part is to make a fighting game where both players see the punches connect with the hit boxes in the same place, and where all players see the same finish line. Or maybe it's by design if every player sees his own car go over the finish line first.

Summary:
Dota 2 is a free-to-play high fantasy action real-time strategy game developed and released digitally by Valve for the PC, Mac and Linux on July 9, 2013.
Built on the studio's Source engine, Dota 2 is the official sequel to Defense of the Ancients, a series of custom scenarios for the 2002 game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos that originally popularized the "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" sub-genre. Development of the game is led by the original mod's final lead designer, IceFrog.
Similar to the original mod, the main gameplay pits two five-player teams (the Radiant and the Dire) against each-other as they work to escort their three endless waves of AI-controlled monsters (or "creeps") to the fortified enemy base in order to destroy the enemy "Ancient". Each player controls an individual Hero character and, throughout the match, earn experience (to level up their stats and abilities) and gold (for purchasing items and equipment) by eliminating enemies.
Rather than using a weekly free-to-play character rotation system (similar to other MOBA games at the time, namely League of Legends), the game makes all characters playable from the start and features cosmetic microtransactions (such as alternate appearances for each Hero's armor and weapons, alternate announcers, and custom UI enhancements) using the Steam Inventory and Steam Market systems.
The game received numerous updates since its original release, adding new Heroes, game modes (including support for custom modes), and features while revising certain gameplay mechanics. New features include better support for both new players (with integrated community-made guide support, coaching, and improved training modes) and competitive players (with improved replay and spectator support), as well as VR headset support (for spectating and viewing cosmetics). It also received a reworked client update in June 2015 (named "Dota 2 Reborn" for a short time), porting the game to Valve's Source 2 engine (the first game released with it), and received a complete map revamp on April 2023.
Dota 2 originally received an invite-only beta in November 2011, during Gamescom 2011. It was formally launched July 9, 2013, but access was gated via a queue system until December 16, 2013. It was also distributed as a standalone game in some regions, with Perfect World publishing the game in China, and Nexon publishing the game in both Japan and South Korea. The game also received spin-offs, including the 2018 digital card game Artifact, the 2020 "auto-battler" game Dota Underlords, and the 2021 animated series Dota: Dragon's Blood.

How can cyberfeminism lead to radical action about intersectionality?
With the first development of feminism, women of color were outcasted from receiving the rights that were being fought for. Since then, with newer waves of feminism, women of color are often spoken for when it comes to ideology and approach, and the voices of women of color are often drowned out. With the development of "Cyberfeminism," women of color now have an outlet to speak directly to one another to encourage radical action. In the article, "Rethinking Cyberfeminism(s): Race, Gender and Embodiment" Jessie Daniels wrote, "Many women in and out of global feminist political organizations view Internet technology as a crucial medium for movement toward gender equality (Cherny and Weise 1996; Harcourt 1999, 2000, 2004; Purweal 2004; Merithew 2004; Jacobs 2004)"(pg. 107, 2009). Cyberfeminism gives women of color the platform to create community which can lead to changes for their lives and the lives of others.
Does the use of technology as a tool relinquish our control on the collection of personal data?
The use of technology as a tool poses the question of whether society has essentially allowed for companies to collect a person's data. With the continuous advancements made in technology, users have ultimately signed off that technology is allowed to become more and more invasive on their lives. Eubanks wrote, "Today, we [society] have ceded much of that decision-making power to sophisticated machines"(pg. 13, Automating Equality, 2013). As society accepts the terms that come with the creation of newer technology, society accepts that their data will be monitored, sold and used to continue the creation of newer technology. Technology has become a tool for society as a whole, whether that be in the medical field, social action, or used to help humans achieve success and goals. The advancements in technology are made with careful analyzation of the data that user's willingly accept to be monitored. The terms and conditions that user's click "yes" to without reading over specifically say what data is being collected and how it will be used. Through using technology for society's benefit, companies have taken that as a willing acceptance to a collection of personal data and information.
How does the automation of technology devalue human experience?
Technological automation removes all human involvement from an interaction. A situation as simple as checking-in for the doctors can now have the receptionist removed from the interaction, thus placing the person with a piece of technology learning personal information about them. The removal of humans in many interactions have created for an individualizing experience. With this removal comes the integration of technology in spaces that require empathy and emotional connection amongst humans. The challenges involved with accessing social work and social benefits is an example of how automating services creates more problems than it solves (Eubanks, 2013). For poverty-stricken communities and areas, having to access resources through automated services presents a larger issue at hand. The issue being that they become larger targets for suspicion and attempts at being denied services. The automation of technological resources allows for companies and systems to take advantage of those in need by becoming the largest targets for data collection.
Can AI be taught bias?
As AI rapidly advances, the notion that it can learn just as much as and even more than humans is prevalent. AI learns as it is taught and what data it is fed. The data it is presented is taken from millions of online users that agreed to have their data collected. When AI is presented with differing opinions, is it as a non-human force able to create bias? AI itself cannot be taught bias, but the technology that AI provides can be used to perpetuate bias.

Folks are going to have to decide whether they want to rethink AI tools and the reasons for their attitudes towards them pretty quick, because both Adobe and NVIDIA just released massive suites of tools for individual creatives and enterprise respectively, and the image generating components for both are apparently sourced from the massive proprietary image databases these companies can arrange access to. So the objection that these models are unethical because they "steal" from public data (they really didn't, but that's sort of besides the point with these now) is null and void. (N.b.: It does put the power to control these tools almost exclusively in the hands of large companies who can license image datasets though, so. Decide how you want to feel about this becoming the standard.)
NVIDIA's offering sounds particularly impressive. They say incorporate multimodal capacity, including text, images, videos and 3D models. Adobe on the other hand has a demo of their tech integrated into Photoshop and Illustrator.
These aren't emerging technologies anymore, these are becoming universal tools that are being deployed at scale, and people are going to need to decide where they stand real quick on their use. The vast majority of people and all of companies that are presented with access to these systems are going to be using them to streamline their pipelines, for better or ill, and if you conscientiously object to their use that will potentially come with consequences in terms of keeping up in your field.
Personally I still think that these can be made into useful developments for society. I think objecting outright to these tools existing now that they do exist is asking for an impossible reversal and throwing out the possibility of working to leverage the tech to benefit the public rather than the corporations who will be using it anyway. No, we should be leaning in and working together in order to shape how these tools are integrated, instead of abjuring and clinging to our current dystopia until machine learning overtakes us.
No, we should be preparing to use these tools constructively, and, Jesus fucking Christ, people need to be organizing to lobby and elect their governments such that we can institute and automation tax and/or UBI now. The expectation that there will be paid work for every human to support themselves is already unrealistic, and clinging to it is the only thing preventing automation via cognitive tools from becoming a massive labour saver instead of the looming scary spectre many people treat it as today. Make no mistake, a policy like that will almost certainly be forced through by sheer necessity if increasing automation makes the current model unsustainable, but we need to get out ahead of it if we want to avoid a transition crisis and unhelpful widespread backlash.

Every so often, I think about the fact of one of the best things my advisor and committee members let me write and include in my actual doctoral dissertation, and I smile a bit, and since I keep wanting to share it out into the world, I figured I should put it somewhere more accessible.
So with all of that said, we now rejoin An Imagined and Incomplete Conversation about “Consciousness” and “AI,” Across Time, already (still, seemingly unendingly) in progress:
René Descartes (1637): The physical and the mental have nothing to do with each other. Mind/soul is the only real part of a person.
Norbert Wiener (1948): I don’t know about that “only real part” business, but the mind is absolutely the seat of the command and control architecture of information and the ability to reflexively reverse entropy based on context, and input/output feedback loops.
Alan Turing (1952): Huh. I wonder if what computing machines do can reasonably be considered thinking?
Wiener: I dunno about “thinking,” but if you mean “pockets of decreasing entropy in a framework in which the larger mass of entropy tends to increase,” then oh for sure, dude.
John Von Neumann (1958): Wow things sure are changing fast in science and technology; we should maybe slow down and think about this before that change hits a point beyond our ability to meaningfully direct and shape it— a singularity, if you will.

Okay so that new Mimic theory... Bare with me, I'm just trying to connect some dots here. Mostly under a readmore.
So last night I was reading the Mimic antifandom Wiki and discovered that it was sealed in the Pizza Place below the Plex... before it was later installed in the plex as the Storyteller. With no mention of them ever retrieving the Mimic and with the Pizza Place still being in ruins, I'll assume they never went back down there after it was sealed.
So what does this mean? It means there's two of these fuckers. How is this possible? WELL
Before the Mimic was sealed, there was entire line of Mimic animatronics built using the same program. With the Mimic that has already learned violence and murder as the base, these behaviours start to come back. I believe it's also implied that at least one of the Mimics saw the original child murders at this time too, and thus, added those behaviours to it's arsenal. It does not have the ability to understand what it's doing. It's an AI programmed to mimic, not understand, and so, it has been taking in all the behaviours of those around it, and using those same behaviours itself. This is where we get that copy of the Mimic some bright spark turned into the Storyteller AI, and it's also where we get our key differences.
The Mimic in the basement kills with all the behaviours we've seen it use before. Hiding in suits, luring people around, and killing them, later learning to remove the limbs and heads of its victims. The Storyteller does not have that limb removing behaviour. Those it kills remains intact. So I can confidently say that if I'm right and there are two Mimics, then the one in the basement removes limbs and the one that was the Storyteller doesn't, thereby making them two separate entities. We know they're from the same base program as both of them still exhibit behaviours learnt when they were still entertaining that small child before it learned violence. Basement Mimic still hides in suits and hangs said suits back up when not in use. The Storyteller creates (or steals? Unsure on that one) a suit based on the white tiger plushie that the little boy loved and it originally had a makeshift copy of. The difference is, one is sealed, and the other isn't.
Now what does this have to do Ruin? Well, when the Storyteller was installed, it was connected to every single aspect of the Pizzaplex, including the animatronics. It's job was to create new interactions and scenarios for games and the animatronics themselves, and after installation, each animatronic started exhibiting behaviours of a small child. Each of them gained different behaviours that the Mimic has previously learned over the years and each of them are thus, acting strangely because of it. It's fully integrated into the system, which is why when the Storyteller was shut down, things didn't go back to normal. It's still a part of the system. It's still watching and learning, still influencing everything.
And this is where the new VANNI security system comes in. Vanny (Vanessa under Glitchtrap's control) made it herself, hence the name. Why? Because she needed to get back down to the Pizza Place below the Plex in order to start the whole Burntrap process. She needs to go down there so Glitchy can live his immortal dreams out. But she can't.
When Fazbear Entertainment sealed away the original Mimic in the Pizza Place and discovered that a group of teens had gone in there and never come out, they installed a new security system called the MXES. There were a few nodes around the place, nothing huge. They were mostly in Bonnie Bowl, possibly with Bonnie as a node himself (possible murder motive here which is why I'm saying it. Not important right now though.) and it did the job. You couldn't just wander down to the Pizza Place now, you had to know what you were doing. Vanny needed to get down there and so, the VANNI unit was built as a counter to it, with the help of Glitchtrap in the system.
Now, to access and be able to see these nodes and be able to actually you know. Interfere with animatronics and stuff, the VANNI unit needed to be connected to the main network. This allowed her to have much more control over the animatronic's perception of her, and allowed her to better interact with the nodes under the guise of maintenance. It also explains why there's a Helpi AI. Every single piece of digital tech that is used to guide and support staff and guests alike in a Fazbear Entertainment establishment has a Helpi AI. By integrating the Helpi AI, Vanny was giving herself a level of protection (such as signal jammers) and allowing herself to go under the radar as just another part of the maintenance system for the Plex. The Helpi AI is in everything, it's connection is almost as expansive as the main security itself, no one would notice an extra string of inputs from it. Not to mention it's just helpful in general to have a cool AI that she can use as an access point to the data in the system without having to search for it herself. He's a handy little guy
You may have already noticed where I'm going with this. If the VANNI security system is combined with the main network that the Mimic is a part of, that means the Mimic is now in the VANNI system. This means the Mimic can now copy the behaviours of Vanessa, Vanny, anyone they interact with, Glitchtrap and of course when Cassie gets there, the other Mimic.
This has created a feedback loop. The digital Mimic copies the underground Mimic and then the underground Mimic copies the digital one. They sound so similar because they're literally bouncing the same data back and forth, over and over again. The difference is, one Mimic is copying from the Helpi AI as well, while the other one can't because it's not a part of the network. When the Black Rabbit is signal jammed and disappears? The digital Mimic says that they took care of it, like the Helpi AI, but follows up with 'It wont bother you anymore...' which feels more like someone else. The underground Mimic then interjects as Gregory and says they boosted the Helpi jammer and the digital one doesn't respond.
You may be wondering how the digital Mimic and the underground Mimic can possibly be connected. Well that's where Vanny comes in. The Mimic is said to be sealed in the Pizza Place. There's no mention of where, presumably the main Pizza Place itself. When Vanny breaks security and goes down there, Glitchtrap is transferred into a battery dead Mimic and charged back up. Glitchtrap is connected to the VANNI mask and that data is getting fed straight into the Mimic. It's sort of a one way system. The only source of information coming and going is via Glitchtrap and the VANNI mask. When Glitchtrap is dealt with by Gregory, the data remains, and the Mimic survives the fire. Tangle (the Blob) and the fire handle Glitchtrap, leaving just the Mimic program behind, with that now pretty much one way connection to the VANNI mask.
So how does it get sealed in that room? Well, the team that originally sealed the guy away (maybe even Vanessa? I'm not entirely sure since I still don't know where the idea she and Gregory did it originates from at all) seal it away again but a little bit more securely. Seeing as how the security was so easily dealt with, they introduced more security nodes around the Plex whilst they were clearing up. They move Roxy off of the main network and put her onto the MXES network, turning her into a security node. It made sense. She was one of their most functional animatronics still standing and she mostly stayed in her own attraction, making her the perfect guard dog to this thing. I was thinking that cleanup could be abandoned after a few more Mimic incidents and had to be sealed away more thoroughly this time, leading to the increase in nodes and the transfer of Roxy onto the MXES network. They unknowingly free her from the digital Mimic's control and leave her be. She was also probably the most convenient of the remaining robots to update given Monty is feral now I guess and Chica is an actual mess and a half, with Sunny and Moon having their whole thing going on too. She's the perfect candidate!
Now the final part of this is the Black Rabbit. It's not the MXES. It's the digital Mimic. It's copied Glitchtrap's data of affecting the real word through the mask, stalking victims and killing kids, as well as getting animatronics to lure and attack for them. That's not a distress call it's sending to the others. That's a call for murder. But then, why is it trying to help Cassie get down to the other Mimic? It's like I said. It's mimicking behaviours. Basement Mimic is trying to help and lure Cassie under the Raceway. Helpie AI is trying to help Cassie with nodes and what not. Glitchtrap and Vanny killed kids through stalking and mind games and this is a child in the mask.
Does it fit cleanly? Uh... probably not. Still got problems here and there. Is there a shit ton of evidence to back it up? Some! Not a shed load, but some! Is it kind of unsastisfying? Yeah kinda.
But it's what I've got at the moment. If you made it this far, I'd love to hear what people think about this. Maybe we can come to a better conclusion than this
