In honor of Leonard Nimoy’s 93rd birthday, I’d like to shine a light on a couple of his lesser known roles: those of Rashi and Maimonides, two great Rabbis in Jewish history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nimoy hugely influenced me not only by his portrayal of Spock, but through the ways he showed the world his Judaism without fear, and with nothing but love and pride.
Happy heavenly birthday, Mr. Nimoy. May your memory be a blessing. 🖖🏻

Reminder that if your feminism doesn't include Jewish women, doesn't accout for the sexual assult and rape of Jewish women, and doesn't believe/choses to deny the pains of Jewish women because it doesn't "fit" your political views, it isn't feminism, it's anti-semitism

Some people out there acting as if white supremacy is the only form of antisemitism. For instance, Christian antisemitism is far older than white supremacy and while they are entwined it is possible to perpetuate Christian antisemitism without being a white supremacist or even white. Antisemitism even predates Christianity and there are forms of antisemitism that are not connected to Christianity at all. It goes to show that antisemitism is complex and multifaceted. It can show up in many forms and it’s important to learn about the different ways it can show up. Anyone can be antisemitic and attributing antisemitism only to white supremacy is harmful and only tackles one part of the issue.

Anyway, this a daily reminder that your local Jews don't owe you shit and they especially don't need to justify their existence, history, or culture to you for you to feel a microscopic piece of empathy for them

the mensch on a bench has always made me curious (and it feels somewhat suspicious) … so what’s the deal with it?
Rating: Jewish (Cultural Christianity Influenced)
"Mensch" is a Yiddish word literally meaning "guy" but in practice used to mean "a decent, upstanding, reliable human".
"Bench" is an English word referring to a long seat with room for multiple people, found worldwide and used by people of all religions.
I will freely admit that prior to researching this ask, I had assumed that Mensch on a Bench toys were a classic example of companies repackaging Christmas stuff to benefit from the Jewish market share without any real engagement with Jewish values, but the original designer and owner of the company is a Jewish man named Neal Hoffman. According to interviews with him, he had the idea when his son asked for an Elf on the Shelf and he said "No, we're Jewish, you can have a Mensch on a Bench instead" and then went home and designed one, eventually getting funding from Shark Tank to develop the business. The toy is accompanied by a children's book about Moshe the Mensch making kind choices, and there are other toys in the "Mensch" family one can purchase, including the delightful "Mitzvah Moose" whose antlers are branches of a menorah.
As always, mileage may vary greatly among Jews when it comes to how individuals feel about the brand, but it is genuinely Jewish.

LGBTQ+ Jewish Resources and Organizations
Happy Pride! Here's a few links I've collected to hopefully reach whoever in the Jewish community may need them. If you're considering donating a bit of money or volunteer time this Pride, please consider looking into these efforts (at your own discretion, as many of these may be local to specific areas). Please feel free to add on to this list, and any queer Jews reading are welcome to link their personal donation posts in the comments.
The SMQN, an organization for LGBTQ+ Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews
Keshet, a group for LGBTQ+ Jews
JQY, a group for LGBTQ+ Jews with a focus on those in Orthodox communities
Queer Jews of Color Resource List (note: this list is way more than just resources, there’s a LOT of helpful stuff in here) JQ International: In their own words, "JQ celebrates the lives of LGBTQ+ Jews and their allies by transforming Jewish communities and ensuring inclusion through community building, educational programs, and support and wellness services, promoting the healthy integration of LGBTQ+ and Jewish identities."
Ritualwell (check out their blessings related to gender identity!)
Guimel, an LGBTQ+ support group for the Jewish Community in Mexico. The site is in Spanish. I’m not a native speaker, but I was still able to read a little bit of it.
SVARA: In their own words, “SVARA’s mission is to empower queer and trans people to expand Torah and tradition through the spiritual practice of Talmud study.”
TransTorah is definitely an older website, but there are still some miscellaneous pdfs and resources up on the “Resources” page.
SOJOURN: In their own words, "The Southern Jewish Resource Network for Gender & Sexual Diversity (SOJOURN) is the American South's resource for Jewish & LGBTQ+ programming, education, support, and advocacy."

This isn't in bad faith at all, just a correction: I've been seeing a lot of gentiles saying or referring to themselves as "a goyim", and I wanted to let y'all know that the word goyim is plural. im at the end of a word means it's gendered male and plural in Hebrew, while ot at the end of a word means it's gendered female and plural (this doesn't apply to everything since Hebrew's really complicated but it's a general rule of thumb). The singular version of the word is goy (or goya for female though it doesn't really matter if you're not speaking Hebrew, the word goy can be gender neutral in my book), so instead of referring to a single person as "a goyim", you should refer to them as "a goy". Maybe I'm dumb and this doesn't apply in other languages but as a native Hebrew speaker this kinda bugs me, so yea :)

Jewish culture is realising that goyim can't be trusted to care about our lives, even if they say happy hanukkah once a year and claim to punch nazis because most of them would have handed us to the nazis anyways and actually believe that our death and tourture is justified.

Funny how in Europe Jews weren’t recognized as European and always told to go back to where we came from yet when we do that’s suddenly when we are “accepted” as European. Funny huh. Seems like there might be something deeper at work here. What could it possibly be? Oh I don’t know maybe antisemitism?!?? To antisemites we will always be the face of what they think is evil and now that has taken the form of white European settler colonialism so that is what they paint us as. We’ve been crying out about this form of antisemitism on the left for years and now see where it’s taken us. There is an utter disregard for Jewish lives.

I hate to have to state the obvious, but people know hating/'getting rid of ' Jews won't fix the world somehow - right? Believe me, that one's certainly been tried and tested

Etrogs?
Rating: JEWISH
The etrog, or the citron in English (not to be confused with citron in French, which means lemon) is perhaps the most Jewish of fruits. Described in Leviticus as the פְּרִ֨י עֵ֤ץ הָדָר֙, the "fruit of the beautiful tree," it is used on the holiday of Sukkot as one of the Four Species. It smells amazing, can be turned into a jam (though PLEASE DO NOT MAKE JAM WITH YOUR SUKKOT ETROG, THEY USE REALLY STRONG PESTICIDES ON THEM), and is generally a delight. People get Invested in finding the nicest etrog they can for sukkot, which is how you end up with all those fantastic pictures of people scrutinizing fruit. They are kept in fancy boxes to protect them during the holiday, because if the pitom (the brown sticky-out bit at the top) breaks, you can't use it anymore.
Also, since they smell great, after the holiday some people use them for their spices for Havadalah, the ceremony to end Shabbos. As the scent starts to fade (which takes a WHILE), they'll stick cloves in them so they can keep using them.
Tl;dr: Heck yeah, etrogs

gonna rant for a second bc I’m gonna have to go back to school soon and I’ve been thinking about this. I am literally so sick of South Park being a funny trendy thing that TikTok kids like bc it’s literally making them think it’s okay to be antisemetic. “that’s too harsh!! where’s the proof?” well, one of the reasons I don’t want to go back to school is because I don’t want to hear the South Park fan kids make jokes about loving Hitler and being lizard people, and then proceeding to excuse it by saying they have a Jewish great uncle or something. As a practicing Jew, especially going to a school that prides itself on acceptance and diversity, it hurts to see that that doesn’t seem to carry over to Jewish people in a lot of progressive spaces, especially because of something as stupid and unimportant as a shitty adult cartoon. You will never be progressive and accepting if care more about a cartoon and it’s unfunny jokes than the comfort and safety of your Jewish peers. Also, if any of the kids who like South Park and like to make these jokes see this, fuck you. I’m done with your bullshit. You’re not funny. Disrespecting my culture and my religion will never be funny. Find another adult cartoon to make trans headcanons of. (I recommend moral orel, it’s actually smart, poignant and much funnier than South Park)
Probably gonna get deranged hate for this. Whatever man, bring it on. Probs gonna delete this anyways.
Goyim can interact, but don’t add on or comment. South Park fans fucking leave. I’m frustrated and hurt and don’t want to debate.
