Thump.

Another crumpled ball of paper hit the edge of the garbage can, tumbling out and landing on the floor. The bin had started overflowing nearly half an hour prior and now a small mountain of paper was building up around it. Some were full of writing, some had creases at the edges, and some barely had simple, but imperfect, words at the top. All had been discarded by the man at the desk, his chin resting on his palm and a frown on his face.

Tsukishima's knee bounced anxiously as he tapped his pen against the notepad before him. The clock read 10:48 p.m. and he knew he had things to be doing, most importantly studying for a test he had to write tomorrow. No matter how hard he tried, however, he couldn’t force his mind to focus on the material. The textbooks and lecture notes had been pushed aside in favour of something much more frivolous: trying to draft the perfect note to the newest manager of the Karasuno Volleyball Club.

A foreign exchange student from overseas, they had joined Tsukishima’s class at the beginning of the year. He had originally paid them no mind, they simply sat across the room from him and behaved as any student would. He had no reason to dislike them, they simply existed like most people in his class. They appeared one day at the volleyball club soon after, excitedly following Kiyoko into the gym and interrupting practice. The way they shook hands with Daichi and greeted everyone else with a bright smile on their face caused Tsukishima to roll his eyes, hoping they wouldn’t be another loud addition to the club.

The more they frequented the gym, however, the more Tsukishima felt himself clicking with them. Despite being fluent in Japanese they had a tendency to use words from their native language, teaching him a variety of words in the process. Mostly swear words, especially useful when he wanted to be snarky and a show-off. Before he knew it he had begun keeping a list of words they frequently used so he would always understand them, even when others didn’t. In his time off he would search up new terms to try and catch them off guard with his knowledge, secretly enjoying how their eyes would sparkle when he used a foreign phrase correctly. Even if he got the pronunciation wrong, hearing them correct him and teach him properly was more than enough.

As a way to foster his learning, they insisted, the two had begun sharing music in their respective languages. The first day the new manager had been in charge of the music during warmup they had chosen a piece by a local producer from their hometown. Despite not understanding the words at the time, Tsukishima did enjoy the rhythm and later asked them for the name so he could add it to his own playlist. The short interaction had sparked a back-and-forth of sending each other increasingly obscure music they enjoyed. Little by little his playlist began to fill up with more of their music taste than his own, something he tried his best to ignore. When he thought too long about how much he enjoyed their conversations or focused too hard on how excited they looked when he successfully blocked a spike his ears would grow hot and his head would get foggy.

Tsukishima’s phone screen lit up beside him, shaking him out of his thoughts. It was only a brief moment of calm, however, as the new notification had your name attached.

“Tsuki, check this out!” The text read, a link to a YouTube video attached.

He tried to repress the jolt he felt in his chest as he clicked on the link and turned the volume up for his headphones. Tsukishima reclined in his chair and shut his eyes, trying to fully immerse himself in the song (totally not for your sake, he thought). Although he didn’t understand most of the words it was enjoyable overall and he could confidently say he liked it.

“That’s a good one,” Tsukishima answered as soon as the music faded out. He clicked loop on the video and turned down the volume before searching up the lyrics, scanning over the words to see if he could pick any out. As it played in the background he continued to add to his ever-growing list of words to try and impress you with.

“You say that about all of them!” Was the response from you, a joking vibe to your text. It made him pause, thinking back over every song you had sent him recently. He had liked all of them even if they weren’t what he typically chose to listen to. Was he really just enjoying them because you were the one sending them?

“That’s because they’re all good.” He settled with, trying to chase the thoughts out of his mind.

After some more chatting back and forth, you both said your goodnights and Tsukishima’s phone fell silent once more. The lyrics still pulled up on his computer screen gave him the courage to continue working on the note before him, feeling more confident in expressing what he wanted to say. His spoken words consistently failed him, always coming out bitter despite the intention being pure. Well, mostly pure. He didn't think he would ever be able to totally discard his sarcastic persona, but he also knew you would never want him to do that anyway. Hoping that he would at least appear more genuine in writing, Tsukishima finally signed his name at the bottom of a perfectly constructed piece of paper.

The sound of volleyballs hitting the floor filled your ears as you sat on a gym bench and yawned. Waking up early to study, attending class all day, and then being the newest manager of a volleyball club was more tiring than you initially expected. You weren’t even the one playing and you felt like you were being stretched thin, you couldn’t imagine actually being on the team. Kiyoko sat next to you, scribbling notes on a clipboard and occasionally adjusting her glasses. She had turned down your help earlier in the evening, insisting that whatever job she was working on was simple enough to perform on her own. As comfortable energy settled between the two of you, now was a perfect time for your eyes to trail over to your favourite member of the Karasuno Volleyball Club. You were unbiased, of course, but everyone has a favourite, right? He was leaning against a wall in the far corner talking to Yamaguchi and attempting to look busy. What you didn't notice was the way he would glance in your direction each time you looked away, not wanting to miss you leaving the gym. It had been a long day, everyone on the team looked exhausted and you could tell that no meaningful progress was being made.

Daichi suddenly clapped his hands together and dismissed everyone, almost as if you had voiced your thoughts out loud. You sprung up from the bench and stretched your arms up over your head, preparing to gather your things and begin heading home. Bidding farewell to Kiyoko and exiting the gym, you stopped at the fountain to fill your water bottle. It wasn’t long until footsteps approached you from behind.

“Hey, Tsuki.” You say, looking at him over your shoulder. “Great practice today. What’s up?”

“Thanks. I have something for you.”

He sounded more blunt than usual. You turned off the fountain and moved to face him, giving him your undivided attention. He averted his gaze, rustling the pages of the notebook he was holding and taking out a piece of neatly folded paper. Unbeknownst to you, he had kept the letter he worked on flat between the pages to make sure it got to you in perfect condition. Although you likely wouldn't notice even if it did have creases or smudges, Tsukishima felt like it would be embarrassing to give you something imperfect. He didn't care though, really. You take it, meeting his eyes with a skeptical look.

“What was so important that you had to write it down? I already have your phone number.” You joke, and he still doesn’t meet your eyes.

“Just open it.”

You gently open the paper, folded once in a perfectly straight line. It was a list of song names, all written in perfectly neat Japanese, numbered one through ten. Each one had a small note beside it talking about the song. I think you’ll like this singer and 1:29 is my favourite and the ending is really good were concise but charming, your smile growing larger and larger as you went down the list. When you got to the end, a message written in your native language was (somewhat sloppily) scrawled at the bottom.

“I really like you, we should hang out more.”

You look up at Tsukishima, joy painted across your face. Your smile was so wide it almost began to hurt. For the first time that night he looked you in the eyes, nearly trembling out of fear that you would think the note was too cheesy. It took all of his energy to appear calm on the outside, trying to relax his posture and maintain a neutral look on his face. You looked at him, then back to the note, then back to him, struggling to find the right words to say.

He cleared his throat, obviously impatient. “So…”

“I’d love to!” You exclaimed, cutting him off and grabbing his right hand with your own two. You shake it up and down, the smile never leaving your face and your eyes scrunched with happiness. “I would love to, Tsuki!"

Your joy was infectious, as soon as you grabbed his hand he felt his mind cloud over and he couldn’t do anything but smile along. The ringing in his ears was louder than ever before and he could feel his face heat up despite trying desperately to maintain his composure. Since the rest of the club already went home, however, he allowed himself to get swept away in your enthusiasm and charm. Only somewhat, of course. Tsukishima was thankful at this moment that he always made it clear he was not a fan of people being in his personal space. Not because he didn’t enjoy your company, but if you came any closer he was worried you would hear how fast his heart was beating.

Kerbal Space Program 1.11: "Some Reassembly Required" is now available!

Hello everyone!

Gear up Kerbonauts, engineers are required for some in situ reassembling! Stack up your inventory with parts and tools in order to prepare for any contingencies. With a reimagining of the game’s inventory system and the introduction of a new EVA construction mode, KSP is here with new content for everyone! 

Kerbal Space Program 1.11: Some Reassembly Required is the game’s latest major free update and with it, we’re adding some significant and game changing elements that give players added flexibility and a more immersive KSP experience. Pack an inventory for your missions and modify your crafts or even assemble a new vehicle on the spot with the help of your engineers, or bring an EVA Science Experiment Kit and have your Kerbals undertake fun animated experiments. In addition to some new parts, visual enhancements, and some bug-fixing, Some Reassembly Required continues to enrich the KSP experience.

Let’s go through some of the update’s highlights below:

EVA Construction Mode

This mode gives your engineers tools similar to what you find in the VAB/SPH to manipulate parts in their inventory or within their range while on EVA in any location. Need to make some adjustments to your Vallerian SSTO, or build an improvised Munar rover in situ? Now you can!

Inventory System Changes

This update expands upon the inventory system and gives it deeper meaning and functionality! These changes include the option to carry and stack various parts in your craft’s inventory and adds to the ability of Kerbals to carry an inventory of their own. All while making it easier to get access to and  manage all of the inventories on a craft. Just remember to think wisely on what you want to bring with you on a mission…

New Lights and RCSs

Some Reassembly Required adds new lights parts to the game, including some smaller, physics-less lights as well as a couple of deployable lights that work without the need for an attached craft or EC power source. And not only that, two new smaller Reaction Control Systems are being added to the part repertoire!  These smaller RCS are perfect to make your probes, drones or smaller crafts more mobile and versatile.

Joolian Moons’ Visual Improvements

With this update, we will continue with the overhauling of the rest of the Joolian satellite system with Bop, Vall and Tylo. These moons have been popular destinations for intrepid space explorers and now they will look better than ever before, with high-quality texture and graphic shaders.

A Peek Inside: Despite the recently added dips and new curve to the track, Theo took each challenge effortlessly and sped past his father for a second lap. This time, he risked a glance at the man and saw him shake his head, scribbling frantically down onto his clipboard. His teeth ground together and he hit the curve hard, losing momentum as he sought to right his bike. His grip grew tight, lips pinched as he committed his focus back to the track. His father may be hard on him, but he was nowhere near as unforgiving as the dirt.

Multi-Dimensional Game Events

I'm currently working on a prototype for a project and needed a super flexible and reusable event system. I took some inspiration from Far Cry's dynamic, emergent systems (and this wonderful GMTK video) and made this... thing (GIF at 1/4 speed):

So what the heck is happening here?

Well, right now I call them "pings", but they are definitely worthy of a more descriptive name in the future. They act as a "multi-dimensional event system" for games. They aren't 4D in the way that you're probably thinking, however. The basic gist is:

A ping is fired off in code and added to an internal list to be regularly "pulsed".

Every "pulse", all ping listeners within range of the ping that can respond are notified.

Each valid responder will receive a notification every pulse unless it returns a response, after which it will no longer be considered as a responder for that specific ping.

So, how are these useful? In so many ways I never even realized until I implemented this system. Here's a few examples of the types of problems this solves in my current project:

AI senses. This works for sight, hearing, heck, even smell. For example, the player's feet can create pings for each step.

Reduces coupling. Pings can have any amount of data associated with them, and can thus track the "source" of the ping. I use this to, for example, have the player create a "wants reload" ping with a very small radius. The player's gun will pick up this ping and trigger the reload. Using this model, the player doesn't need a reference to the gun. The gun's resulting "reload" ping can be then picked up by nearby enemies, as if they are "hearing" the reload and know to fire on the now vulnerable player. It's also picked up by the UI, which can show a reload animation in the HUD.

Extremely easy to write debug tools for. The above GIF shows how much information can be very easily visually parsed by rendering debug gizmos.

It should be noted that this system separates the concerns of "listening" and "responding" -- they are two separate interfaces. This is because a single listener might be able to hear multiple different types of pings.

Now with all of that out of the way, time to dive deeper into the individual elements of the equation: pings, listeners, and responders.

Pings

Ping is an abstract class that you create a derived class from, such as TakingCoverPing, or ReloadingWeaponPing. They are basically like regular code driven events, except with 5 distinctive differences. Pings by default are:

Positional: They have a 3D position in the world.

Radial: They are spherical in shape and have a radius.

Temporal: They have a start time and duration.

Continual: They don't have to just be fired once. Instead they “pulse” at a regular, custom interval (if desired).

Global: Responders don't register to specific instances of these pings. I'll get into this more later.

There are some hidden bonuses that can be derived from the above properties. For example, since pings are positional and radial you can calculate a signal attenuation value for any 3D position. When used with AI senses this attenuation value can then be fed into RNG systems to determine if an enemy "heard" a sound that they were a bit far away from.

The continual nature of these events isn't a very widely applicable property, but does allow for very slick implementations of specific behaviors. A good example can be found in the Hitman games (specifically the trilogy started in 2016). Any weapon not in an expected location will attract the attention of NPCs. Instead of engineering a specific AI sense to accomplish this, weapons that are dropped outside of specific locations could create a ping with an infinite duration and regular pulse rate. While you still would need to write the response behavior, you don't need specific code to have the AI pick up on these sort of gameplay conditions.

By default Pings can also store the source GameObject that fired the ping. This is used by the debug visualizers to draw a line from the ping to the object that created it. It's also used by many of the responders to determine if specific pings are relevant to them. Going back to the gun reloading example, each gun only responds to a WantsReloadPing if the source of the ping is in their transform hierarchy (in this case it's the character that wants the reload).

Listening

Listeners inherit from the IPingListener interface, which just describes the listener's Position and Radius.

Yep, just like pings, listeners are also positional and radial in nature. This means that determining which listeners can "hear" a ping is done via a very simple sphere overlap check.

This is a very important distinction between pings and other event systems. In a typical Observer-pattern-like event system, each handler registers itself to specific instances of events. It will always receive a callback for those instances of those events as long as it remains registered.

A typical event bus implementation will remove the coupling between the owner (publisher) of the event and the handler (subscriber). Instead, anything can fire an event of any type via the event bus, which then selects handlers based on the type of event. This is also known as the Mediator pattern.

Pings are closer to an event bus in nature. However, with regards to selecting handlers in this system, I refer to this process as "Listener Discovery" due to how varying the resulting list of handlers can be based on game state.

Some of the information derived during listener discovery is stored in a struct called PingLocality and passed to the responder. It stores the square distance from the listener to the ping, as well as the attenuation of the ping based on the listener's position.

Its very easy to abuse listener setup to achieve more flexible behavior. For example, a global listener just needs a radius of float.PositiveInfinity (this is how the UI listens to events in the world). If it receives a "acknowledge" response, it'll log some information about the acknowledgement, and add that responder to the ping's list of acknowledgers to ensure that it's ignored during future pulses. A "soft acknowledge" is like a "none" response, except it is logged in the same way as an "acknowledge" response. Again, this is very specific and is only used for cases where you want to know that the ping was potentially relevant to a receiver.

As a reminder, the primary reason why listening and responding are treated as separate concerns is so classes can inherit multiple times from IPingResponder<T> with different types for T. This allows a single object to respond to multiple different types of pings without having to specify unique listener position and radius values for each response.
