The real difference between "stem" and "art":

Spend 11+ years becoming an expert on SE Ohio forest history and dynamics including tree communities, forest herbs, parasitic plants, and the influence of pasture trees on regeneration. Become able to draw streams, 1939 aerial photos and the architecture of single trees from memory. Know the ages of all the forest stands at the state park. Still get requests for locations to see certain species because "I don't know, but @spatheandspadix might."

Leave town eventually because there's no freakin jobs BUT come back all the time and base a lot of your creative work on, you guessed it, SE Ohio forest dynamics. Time to share it!

"Art": Make a large and painstakingly detailed embroidery about SE Ohio forests drawn from real specimens while sipping a Donkey chai: ew no, you're not ~local~ enough

"STEM": Present the single worst poster I have ever made about SE Ohio forests, assembled the morning of with a purple posterboard and gluestick: so glad you're back and still working on research down here, Ohio will always be home :)

I'm a total persona non grata when it comes to "local art": half my work is based strongly in SE Ohio, but SE Ohio doesn't want me and Pittsburgh is like "What's SE Ohio?"

your previous ask makes me think- what would you have liked to see for helaena? i find her more interesting in the show (dreamer, autistic coded) and didn’t feel she had much of a presence in the book, although that may have just been my reading! i certainly hope they expand on her as a character beyond “sometimes saying prophetic stuff” lol. what would you want to see for her?

Interesting question! I honestly don't know! They changed her character so much - not that I necessarily disprove. I think making her a dragon dreamer could be a very potent addition if they did something with it, like making her a Targaryen Cassandra. For now, she is just relating imagery she sees, but doesn't understand & no one around her has figured out she is a prophet.

In the books, she was a sweet and jolly girl, who was even a little sassy & was not intimidated by her husband, even offered her own input in such a way that Aegon listened to her advice. So I would like some of that? More agency, I guess. Give her something to do. More scenes with her children would be a start.

Helaena was beloved by the commons and the smallfolk were outraged at her death, so I imagine she'd spend time doing charity work and being involved in city matters, if the people of King's Landing came to know her. So many ways they could play with this. Have her act like some kind of proto-mayor? Organize fêtes? Sponsor various urban planning enterprises? A new fountain, a paved street, some sewerage work? Clean water? SO many interesting ideas other than "weird girl who spends most of her times indoors". You can still keep her neurodivergent-coded and give her these jobs; she'd actually be quite the busy person this way, having meetings with all sorts of people in and out of the castle.

I did like that they included embroidery as one of her hobbies. Her spider looked really nice. So show her in clothes she makes herself with bug themes. Maybe she goes into the city to visit fabric shops and meet with seamstresses and compares notes on how to sew caterpillars.

The wildest wish I have is if they pretty, pretty please, with cherries on top, show her flying on Dreamfyre and maybe even engaging in battles or at least aerial reconnaissance. I mean, if Rhaenyra can spend the entire books sitting on her arse with the most useless dragon in the world and the show-runners STILL decide to give her more flying action scenes......... why couldn't Helaena receive the same treatment?

Crafting Year in Review

Just for fun, here is my crafting year in review for 2023.

I started out the year by making a stuffed house hippo (from this kit). I'd never made a stuffed critter before, but it came out really well!

I followed that up by making a couple of little David and Patrick stuffed mice:

I did a bunch of embroidery this year. I finished my aerial rivers series:

And I did some embroidery on paper for the first time, which was very fun and I'd like to do more in the future:

For the past few months, I have been hand-embroidering replacement hexagons for a quilt my grandmother gave me as a kid. Many of the original hexagons have been damaged, so I want to replace them. I've done 75 so far and I might be halfway done?

Gills family is dark zone

Warm colored bioluminescence for invisibility from predators/beasts

Darker skin for blending into the surroundings

Using magic items makes their skin translucent that exposes innards and appears as white, making them hard to see despite the amount of light

Larger fins and are made to catch water passively, very frilly

Reeds a kelp florist (hadal)

Bright and warm veil-like webbing that grows long and flowing on large surface areas

Tidestriders are accented with purple and yellow

Falyns a shark tamer (Twilight)

Less bioluminescent, happens in flashes instead of being passively always on, but can be activated with will or emotion

Zomazaths are accented with pink and orange

The tidestriders live in the twilight zone

Gillions body has changed because of being in the oversea for so long

Hidden patterns exploding into bright colors of any hue.

Fins stiffen

Hair floats

Appearances from aerial views tends to look larger and flatter for blending in with shrubbery or grass

Gillion has a scar over his mouth that removed a few of his teeth

Armor is undersea punk (fishnets, bells, etc) with lots of crustacean detail surrounding gold and dark blues, a fake pretzel on his shoulder, black plating, loops everywhere

Clothes are black with gold detailing, pink sash with white embroidery, coins hanging, lavender sash, ripped rope nets, 

Lots of plantlife wrapped around him, 22 pearl chains hang from his coral hang from his ears and connect to his neck, 

New sashes all have community based embroidery, darker colored ones the moon, lighter ones the sun

[ 🧱 ] how would you describe your muses’ morality? what are their core values?

DAI — "nothing is more important than the responsibility my faith confers upon me to help others in need." originally his altruism was structured by the tenets of his faith, but he's come to understand that his altruism is his own and faith is just one way to guide it. with or without pelor, with or without tempus, he wants to help people and do good. he was lawful good when the campaign started, but he's shifted to neutral good over time.

MINAH — minah's morals are a little hard to pin down, tbh. she has a deep-seated lack of trust in any authority or organization, so her morality prioritizes the individual over rule of law. her sense of right and wrong is largely based on her moment-to-moment gut instincts in a situation, but tends to be driven primarily by her desire for personal safety and security (financially, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.) and secondarily by an impulse towards compassion (she'd really really rather not break any fingers). she meant it when she told cian that there's always unfixible things, and she's not particularly interested in fixing them—she tries to keep out of the big-picture politics and ethics, and she's likewise not planning to cut down on the thieving any time soon—but that doesn't mean she can't tip a busker or talk to a half-blind orphan lordling or offer to save a templar's lover from tranquility (as an interrogation tactic, but hey! still an offer). it's the little touches when you desperately need them that matter most. minah is true neutral.

CLEA — clea lives by the old girl scout law of leaving a place better than you found it. she's lived a long time and values heart and courage and kindness and growth. at the root of everything, she's just a gardener. clea is neutral good.

[ 😱 ] does your muse have any specific fears? where did those fears come from?

DAI — he's afraid of deep water. his first death was pretty traumatic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I rolled a couple times during the kaiju arc against panicking while they were underwater but he kept it together (shout out to that high WIS mod). besides that, he's afraid of failing the people he's supposed to be taking care of, which was always there but really kicked in when Izzy died. a lot of things changed for him when Izzy died.

MINAH — she's got a couple, yeah. she's a lil claustrophobic—she can deal with tight spaces, but she needs to be able to access an exit, otherwise she gets panicked about being trapped. a few escapes have gone badly over the years—crammed in some tiny hidey-hole hoping no one notices her, or not quick enough and ending up arrested—and she's afraid of ending up back in a cell

CLEA — her son's memory haunts her—she dreams about him sometimes, when she's not dreamwalking—but mostly she's just grateful to see him. it's the only way he lives on. she's definitely afraid of foresyhte going to the abyss (and then losing him just like everyone else), which is why he won't be going! problem solved.

[ ✨ ] what aesthetics or symbols do you reference when writing your muse? are these backed up by canon, if your muse comes from a canon? is there any specific relevance to these choices?

DAI — shields, the sun, wings, light. wounds/sickness come up pretty often, which makes sense because he's a healer (but *cocks gun*). lava, recently :)

MINAH — I associate her with the tragicomedy masks, and also songbirds. molten gold, a bit. silks (the aerial kind, mostly, but also costumes). the theater, of course. and nomadism—living on the road, horses and caravans, that sort of thing.

CLEA — old trees, shrikes, white winter foxes, snow. furs and beads and silver jewelry. weeping willows and labyrinths and tea and bright embroidery. the way sunlight feels through the trees on a cool day in early spring, a touch of warmth after a long winter.

[ 🐺 ] does your muse like solitude? do they prefer it to being around others? how easily does your muse get lonely?

DAI — definitely (desperately) needs his alone time. he's a true introvert; no matter how much he likes hanging out he simply Has to find some quiet time to rest and recharge. the trip through the storm where they were all crammed together in the tiny hut was one of the worst experiences of his life and he's literally in the abyss right now. he doesn't get lonely easily, in part because he's always had pelor with him—the loneliest he's ever felt, I think, is when his faith was in tatters and he didn't know where to turn.

MINAH — minah likes a little private time to take the mask(s) off, but she gets antsy if she's on her own for too long. even if she's not entertaining, she likes to be in a group—she's an extrovert

CLEA — she gets lonely really easily, actually. back home she was part of a big community, and then when she left she was constantly meeting new people, going new places, traveling with her party. being in selto is nice—she likes the city and she's got friends and plenty to keep her busy—but she never lived alone before. she has a tendency to talk to the plants (and the neighbors) when she's undersocialized. she really does wish forsyhte would visit more often.

Meet The Aerialist.

When Kazuki Rosario was only a child when they lost their parents in a sudden car accident. The breaks failed, and the car went toppling over a cliff. When they were adopted by a strange couple, they were only in their new home for a few years until they were sent into a religious boarding school far away. As they grew up, they began to develop a fascination for the performing arts, and for the strange and unusual. And so, using money from their allowance and several part time jobs over the years, they began to learn the art of aerial dancing. Using silk ribbons and hoops to lift themselves into the air, drop back down to the ground. To spin and defy gravity itself. The closest they ever could to reaching the stars. It became their escape, their one solace in the lonely life they lived. And Kazuki was excellent. Years of teaching themselves led to having a unique style that was built with raw emotion and despair and hope and adventure. When Kaz noticed a flyer at the train station one day, advertising a circus looking for new performers and skilled athletes, they knew what they wanted to do. Thus, the beginnings of The Aerialist.

Standing at 6'1, Kazuki has a tall muscular build, with brown skin and deep green eyes filled with the fires of their passion for life and adventure, and for what they do. Their hair is just long enough to reach their shoulders, dyed in pastel blues and pinks not unlike cotton candy. Two small braids sit in front of either of their ears, which have been pierced. One ear has an earring of a small star, while the other holds a crescent moon. Spiralling down their left arm was a detailed tattoo of a snake, the tip of it's tail reaching their collarbone while it's head and tongue seemed to look like it was resting on the back of their hand. Kazuki is often seen wearing a black jumpsuit with embroidery details of reds, blues and purples, mostly along the sides and hem of the pant legs. Over top of this was a soft forest green jacket, the sleeves rolled up to just above the elbow. They also wear a pair of simple black work boots, and two handmade bracelets on their left wrist.

Iris takes more after Near in personality,, but that's probably because of how Nori's life-experienced has been warped and adapted from the Underground;;;. Thauma/Eraser Name: Kimio (紀美生, 喜美生 , or 貴美雄) or Masayoshi (匡美) Aizawa Gender: Male (pan man :))) ) Appearance: Messy, natural-bedhead dark hair just like actually both of his parents down to his shoulder-blades,,, typically barely tied back into a sloppy waterfall. Kimio has dark eyes that are actually a deep shade of indigo,,,. He definitely takes face-shape and body-structure from Shouta;;. Personality: Mellow, calculative, handy -- messes around with things that use his hands like painting models and coding,,,. Likes wordplay,, enjoys a good pun,,,. Slightly manipulative;;;. His hair doesn't fly up as much as his father's would but that's mostly due to the weight of the hair itself,, his eyes do flash a peacock blue when he uses one of his stored quirks but will not constantly glow,,,.
