#agents of shield rant

Okay, so I’m nearing the end of S5 in my latest AOS rewatch, and I saw a few tiktoks, and I just wanna sorta rant for a second.
I may be a massive Daisy stan above literally all else, wbk she’s my best girl… but I believe that Yo-Yo was in the right to kill Ruby Hale. Period.
Firstly, I know revenge isn’t the SHIELD way, I get that, but at the very same time there is so much hypocrisy there surrounding other team members (eg. Coulson had his revenge on Ward, Jemma ALSO tried to get revenge on Ward but failed, Hunter as well, even May was intent on it, etc) so why shouldn’t Yo-Yo also get to have her revenge? Ruby left her disabled for life (and did it on purpose + showed no resentment + would do it again, might I ADD, by literally repeatedly threatening Fitzsimmons with the very same thing). Yo-Yo deserved vengeance, in some way.
I understand Daisy’s motive in wanting to save Ruby, to bring her on as a SHIELD agent and try to give her a new purpose, the same way she was/had- but this never could have happened. SHE CUT YO-YO’S ARMS OFF- DISABLING HER. Allowing her to become a SHIELD agent after this fact would be just as bad as welcoming Ward back onto the team with open arms after what he did to Fitz- which left him with a permanent disability in return too (in a different way but obv similar to Yo-Yo nonetheless). Both Ruby and Ward were HYDRA. Both significantly hurt a team member on PURPOSE. It’s the same deal. Bringing her onto the team would’ve been wrong.
Finally, Daisy claimed Ruby was “coming around” just before Yo-Yo killed her. Daisy, ilysm, but girl. 😭 Ruby literally tried to kill Daisy moments earlier, as well as throw inanimate objects (and Fitzsimmons…) around the room with her mind. She killed Werner by accident (which shows the serious lack of control she had- and how dangerous she was in that moment), not to mention she was refusing to be reasoned with (and couldn’t be). She was completely out of control and it wasn’t going to get better (look at what happened to Creel after he merely touched the Gravitonium- he never improved).
In a way, Yo-Yo did her a favour by killing her. Even if another solution came along in time, Yo-Yo, as the others would regularly say, MADE THE HARD CALL. She did what was best in that moment. Not to mention, Yo-Yo also thought that by killing her, she saved the world. Although this proved false, at the time she thought she was doing the right thing to save all of literal humanity. As I said, in the end, she made the hard call.
Not to mention, Yo-Yo admitted that she’s not proud of what she did. It’s not like she enjoyed killing her. Yet, so many people make her out to be some monster. I hate it.
In conclusion, I’m on Yo-Yo’s side with that whole thing (and hate seeing people- and the team themselves- giving her absolute hell for it). However I truly flip-flop between all the characters during S5 and their many arguments. MAN, that season is always a tough watch for so, so many reasons. It’s good, but painful.
(P.S. I’m convinced most of the people who stan Ruby are just Dove Cameron fans. Which I have nothing against. You do you. 11 year old me was her biggest fan frfr. But other than that, I don’t see why people like her character so much tbh. But alas.)

honestly fuck nathaniel malick. just rewatched 7x10 and this guy is just the worst fucking dude aos has to offer. he tortures daisy and steals her powers, acts like theyre his, brainwashes and manipulates her sister who she didnt know existed, and then kills her mother in front of her, with her own powers, just after she got to meet her before she became insane and murderous. can someone please just punch his fucking head off or finally just shoot him in his fucking face already

maybe there’s a universe out there — happening now — where we end up together. maybe there’s a universe where i’m the right person for you. where i adore every nice thing you did for me without starting to resent you. a universe where you actually end up with someone who appreciates you. where no one becomes a doormat. where both of us can shed our baggage and curiosity and issues. if you think of it all this way, then it’s like neither of us did anything wrong. you just found me in the wrong universe. that’s all. because you could have loved me forever. and maybe in another universe, i let you.

May's potential betrayal from Daisy's perspective isn't talked about nearly enough.
Tumblr media
When you think of the character that would take the hardest hit, obviously Coulson is the first to come to mind. They have the history, the established and complicated relationship, and we see the anger and the fallout of that single moment where he doesn't know whether he can trust her or not.
What’s not really dwelled on, however, is Daisy's reaction.
She and May might not have the same kind of history or well-defined relationship, but there is something there. Something you'd imagine to be pretty important to a girl who's never had a stable "home", let alone a positive female/mother-like role model. If May had ended up being the Hydra mole, this image she'd constructed of her, this almost unwavering belief in her would've crumbled.
During the confrontation scene, you can even see the fear on Daisy's face. She's not mad like Coulson is or even scared in the same way Fitz is, she looks genuinely heartbroken and betrayed because not only did she look up to May, but in order to get closer to her she had to open herself up in a different way than she did with the rest of the team (essentially compensating for how two people might open up to each other seeing as May wasn't doing any of it) and for someone who grew up the way Daisy did, opening herself up that way left her incredible vulnerable, and for that to be wasted like it might've when she was younger and naive is terrifying to her.

ok i know we all hate ward and i agree that he’s horrible for what he did to the team… but i do have to say the whole “i don’t know who to be without garrett telling me what to do” is soooo interesting and makes for a really well-written character
i’ve just finished s1 and seeing him struggle with that towards the end is kinda cool; i can’t wait to see how they work with that idea later on bc it really does make me want to see him become his own person (if that’s evil or good idc i just want to see some character development!!)
he would definitely need a zuko-level redemption arc to make me like him again but part of me is feeling the way fitz did.. i just want him to be good :(( but also i hate him so much and was definitely cheering when may was beating him up lol
ugh complex characters are so cool but so annoying bc why do i have mixed feelings about this random guy 😭 how dare marvel actually have a well-written twist villain that made me feel personally attacked
anyway NO SPOILERS PLS i just wanted to get some thoughts out of my brain; IM NOT DONE WITH THE SHOW SO SHHHH i don’t want to know anything ‼️

rewatching s7 aos and i remember how much fun my brother and i had watching each ep weekly
i'm currently up to 'the totally excellent adventures of mack and the d'. jeff's cover should be on the radio so i can just listen to it on my drives to work
costumes, hair, makeup, set design, everything about this season was so enjoyable and it makes me truly miss non-svod tv programming.
episodes aired at a particular time and you know others are watching it with you. episodes came weekly and i didn't have to wait a few years for the next season. don't get me wrong, i love the convenience of svod distribution and the time/budget it gives for a show to be made, but maybe i'm just old and miss the full-length seasons of ridiculous 20+ eps and 'filler episodes'.
i remember my mum getting my brother and i to record episodes on our vhs every night so she could watch her asian dramas when she got back from work. i'd record eps of doctor who if i couldn't watch it live ahhhhh back in the day lollll

I need there to be more agents of shield stuff. It’s one of the only good fandoms I’m in and there’s not enough of it.

I just love how Daisy’s interactions with Rosalind in S3 are somewhat reminiscent of a snotty, rebellious child being pissed at her dad’s (Coulson’s) new girlfriend, Coulson having to remind them to play nice every 5 seconds.
Not to mention her asking Andrew, and basically anybody, when her real mom (May obv) is coming back (to save her from the scary “dragon lady” at this point)

aand done with my aos rewatch. still feeling so many different things about this episode. this series honestly changed my life.
the most important part probably though is when daisy tells nathaniel that her mission was just to distract him, and proceeds to kick him into a reactor and blow up his entire fleet without a drop of sweat cause hes a fly on the windshield and thats that.

Do anyone still remember Agents of Shield? You know, the TV show that Marvel studios keeps trying to ignore and now people are debating it if is cannon or not?
I really love that show and it's one of my favorite early Marvel TV series, beside Jessica Jones. Actually, now I know why I like MCU Moon Knight. Just like my previous faves, it keeps itself in it's own bubble and focus more on characters.
But Agents of Shield, while the first season dragged on. The moment it stopped constricting itself to a larger source material (movies AND comics). That is when the storytelling finally shines.
It's not a faithful adaptation of the 616. It is simply taking the core concepts, elements and makes it its own. It did Inhumans first before Ms. Marvel did, a better Secret Wars plot than the series Secret Wars (only with robots, sprinkled in with the concept of the Matrix and Darkhold). Imagine, mixing the Ghost Rider, the Matrix, Hydra, and the Darkhold into a plot that all connects to each other.
And Phil dies more times than Loki did.
Seriously, go watch it. Slog through the first few episodes, because as soon as the Hydra reveal happens, Shit hits the fan and that when the real ride starts.
Man, no wonder I like MCU Moon Knight.
The protagonist also dies, and just walks it off like it's nothing. And even when the protagonist DO dies, the plot demands that they come back, again.
In the Agents of Shield final season, Phil Coulson finally do dies for real. At least the original one, BUT, due to shenanigans with Hydra, again, Phil Coulson have Indepth knowledge of how the organization works, and they need him back to stop Hydra.
They didn't resurrect him though; they already did with alien blood. Instead, they created an LMD clone of Phil Coulson, and it's even a plot point there the LMD have to come to terms that he isn't even Phil, just a robot who is designed to think, act, and behave like Phil.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I haaaate it when a long running show/comic/etc introduces alternate timelines as a major plot point.
"Oh, all that story that you were invested in? The countless hours you spent enjoying it? All the character development? Nope, never happened. We hit the cosmic reset button/timeline change so everything you thought you knew is no longer relevant!"
This is the single fastest way to make me lose interest in a piece of media.
The mirror universe being used for more than a throwaway episode in Star Trek: Discovery? Hate it. The dark future in space from Agents of SHIELD? Ugh. The timeline overhaul in The Flash? Diediediedie! The aftermath of pretty much every Crisis event in DC? Guaranteed to remove/alter some of my favorite characters in shitty ways.
Seriously, leave that shit to the fandom. Because when fandom does it, the canon is still there. We're not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Most of the time, if we write/draw an alternate universe, we start with the changed setup right from the get go, we don't hit the reset button in the middle of our own story! That's just pulling the rug out from under the audience!
It feels like violating the social contract where the audience engages with the story in good faith (and usually pays for the media) and the author/showrunner/whatever tries to satisfy the audience's emotional expectations. Like, if something was advertised as a romcom but changed into a harrowing drama about drug addiction at the 1 hour mark, I think the viewer would be right to be miffed.
"Oooooh, what if we took the sweet character who has acted as the emotional heart of the story and made them into a heartless villain in this new timeline, aren't we edgy?" Fuck right off.

I've got an NCIS Hawai'i WIP thats like 4000 words of unfinished fluff that could have a whole second half but I just don't have the motivation to get it done right now as I'm working on another alternate timelines AoS/AC crossover.
And it makes me feel burned out even though I'm not
