I wish that some of the AI hand wringing was a bit more ... realistic? Like, somewhere between "AI will generate text that is indistinguishable from that written by a human!" and "AI is dumb and does nothing useful." is "AI generated text that plausibly could have been written by a human, but that human would have also received a D for this paper, so you probably should have still proofread or edited it."

#I'm not going to do a deep dive to determine if everything I have to grade was done with AI because I don't really care #but sometimes it doesn't meet the requirements of the assignment #the citations aren't real #and they left in the 'Sure I can help you with that!'#but the students are like “First of all I DID NOT use AI and second it HAS to be correct because ChatGPT said!”

What was the thought process?

Like yeah, i fucking hate the idea of my, and others people work being used to train AI without as much as a penny for compensation or whatever, but really?

Gen alpha is cooked my 8 year old sister gets frustrated when we say school is for learning and doesn't want to figure out how to spell because she uses voice to text. She doesn't want to learn how to type on an actual keyboard and is very resistant to learning handwriting for similar reasons. All because she's had a tablet since she was like four or five

#it does not help that despite being homeschooled neither parent actively works with her #to do the schooling from home #she just uses a paid service that has pre-recorded lessons and ai graded writing assignments #and when my father has tried to take an active role he just prints out worksheets #and then gets mad when she cant do them perfectly because she is an eight year old probably with adhd #im pretty sure this is educational neglect but the only people who are aware of how bad it is #are me and two siblings #so if we made an anonymous tip to anyone they could probably still deduce that it was from inside the house #anyway i want to sh--t myself rn yay thanks

Thinking about a few days ago where I was complaining about really not wanting to do an assignment because I had been working all day and was told that I should just use chatgpt to do it. And I had to be normal about it lest I become the weirdo in the situation

#assignments aren’t just busy work you know. they’re supposed to help you think. and teach you problem solving #your teacher doesbt just want an answer. chances are they KNOW the answer!#they want YOU to come to YOUR own conclusion because that means you thought for yourself #especially in university settings #and like I hate the class and I don’t care about the teacher but I absolutely wasn’t going to use ai to do my work for me.#but I was still exhausted so I just ended up not doing it at all. lol
