The episode "Buck, Actually" is severely underrated. There's so many pivotal moments in this episode that unintentionally foreshadow things to come.

The episode title "Buck, Actually" is based on the film Love, Actually; this film is Tommy Kinard's favorite movie

Buck hooks up with Taylor for the first time in this episode; the first time he met Taylor was when her helicopter crashed; Tommy flies a helicopter

On a call involving one half of an elderly gay couple getting crushed to death, Buck speaks with the other half of the couple whose name happens to be Thomas; Tommy's full name is Thomas

so the person I currently have romantic feelings for is now my coworker, but we were in band together for three years before that. we weren’t really friends (sort of lowkey enemies tbh?? our last interaction before working together had been him cussing me out in dms lmao) so we didn’t hang out and there’s not many pictures of us together and all that. except today as I was zoning out of one of my classes, I looked over to one of the photos I have hung up on my wall (I have these strings hung up all over my room that I’ve used little clothespins to put up photos on) and it was a group picture from drumline last year and the two of us happened to be standing next to each other in the photo. curiosity got the best of me and I got up from my desk and started investigating all of the other band group photos I have hanging up. no joke, in 3/4 of them, we’re next to each other. started digging through a stack of photos that didn’t make the wall, same story there. it’s just so crazy to me that here’s this person that I kind of hated when we were marching together and yet, we ended up next to each other in all of these photos and now, here we are. I don’t really like the idea of fate or a greater power or anything but like. that’s a bonkers coincidence.

i  don’t  think  i’ve  made  a  formal  post  about  it  but  considering  the  sheer  amount  of  bracelets  she  wears  on  her  own  wrists,  julie  absolutely  makes  friendship  bracelets  for  herself  and  the  members  of  the  band  ( +  flynn,  obviously  ).  each  is  made  of  strands  of  different  colors  that  she  associates  with  each  of  them  (  ex.  alex’s  is  pink,  white,  and  black.  luke’s  is  blue  and  brown.  )  with  two  important  distinctions:

1.  each  bracelet  has  one  strand  of  red  woven  into  it,  whether  it’s  visible  or  not,  to  symbolize  the  red  string  of  fate  that  has  brought  all  of  them  together.  (  and  she  tries  to  dodge  how  corny  it  sounds  when  she  explains  it  )

2.  her  own  bracelet  is  a  combination  of  each  of  everyone  else’s  colors  plus  bright  violet,  the  color  she  associates  most   with  herself.

using the chain for the final scene in we gull way back was just the perfect song choice (i mean we know this but let’s chat).

in a very literal sense, the lyrics “and if you don’t love me now, you will never love me again” apply directly to the situation at hand: if they don’t love each other and support each other now they are most likely going to die and will never get the chance to love again. it’s a very we-are-on-the-verge-of-death-and-i-will-love-you-til-the-end kind of moment. in the literal sense of the lyrics, it’s very sweet 10/10 song choice # jenkins you slay.

on another level, there is an aspect to consider with these same lyrics. more than just the idea of we-are-literally-dying, the song to me symbolizes how stede and ed can not bear to live without each other and if they don’t love each other in this moment, they could not bear to continue without each other’s love.

this is where it’s important to bring up edward’s return to the ship and saying “better alive than dead” when just 4 episodes beforehand, he and izzy were conspiring how to kill stede, pass it off as blackbeard’s death, and let edward slip into retirement alone. now, after weeks aboard the revenge bonding with the gentlemen pirate and learning his idiosyncrasies and feeling his rather exquisite cashmeres, he would rather surrender himself to the english and give up his life of piracy to either face certain death by stede’s side or serve the english in their war with stede. it’s very important to recognize this mindset shift because it clues us in soooooo much to how deeply edward feels for stede. alexa play motion sickness by phoebe bridgers.

here we can also draw on a few moments with stede, some before this scene and some after. after edward leaves with calico jack, stede (as much as he is trying to hold himself together for the crew) clearly struggles with the loss of edward to jack. maybe he feels guilt that his personality/persona was too much/too flamboyant/too feminine for edward and the very idealistic/hypermasculine idea of pirates or maybe he feels abandoned because after weeks of blackbeard’s company and lots of planning to try encouraging fun, adventurous days to keep blackbeard entertained and keep him around, blackbeard says that stede would have realized what he really is and that they were never meant to last which clearly breaks stede’s heart as he feels like he has spend these weeks getting to know who blackbeard/edward really is and that he is not this monstrous bloodthirsty kraken, but a “lovely” and pensive person who cares for others and wants to i protect the people he feels loyal to. another moment to draw from is in the pub once he is back with mary. at this pub, he talks to the other men there who are marveling at his piracy takes and, when asked about blackbeard, he gives a few short answers (some of which please the men’s idea of blackbeard, some of which do not) and then quickly says that he does not want to talk about him. to me this refers to two things: he does not want to have to bend the truth again to fit some version of blackbeard that pleases these men when he knows that edward really is just a lovely guy and he doesn’t want to think about blackbeard anymore because he feels like if he just moved on and let blackbeard go back to his bloodthirsty piracy, they would both be better off, even though it pains stede beyond comprehension to leave him.

for them, these lyrics resonate because existing apart from each other is sheer pain. we can see this in ed’s final breakdown in stede’s empty room and in stede’s misery being trapped back in the heteronormativity of society. la vida es dolor as nana would say.

very quickly, i also think the line “chaaaaain keep us together” is very significant because no matter how far they go or how many troubles they face, there is a chain that keeps them together. it gives very much invisible string by taylor swift.

another thing is the repetition of “running in the shadows.” i would give you more on this but right now my brain is so foggy so unfortunately that will have to wait til another day! give me your delicious brain juices on this please and thank you!
