Alexander (Grimm) - Oneshot

Alexander has heard about a lot of outrageous requests, but he never thought he’d be a part of this one.

“You’d like me to babysit?”

His face displayed confusion.

Whenever Nick Burkhardt showed up, he almost always expected some kind of chaos. Yet this time the situation seemed less like impending catastrophe.

“Trust me if I had someone else I would ask. We’re about to head on vacation for the next three weeks. I found her and she needs someone who knows about this. You’re a minister now. Since you have a base here in Portland I figured you were the best bet. Plus the council wants us to cooperate right. Grimms and Wesen. This is the perfect place to start.”

When he decided to rebuild the organization, he didn’t really see babysitting as one of the more crucial parts of that.

“I am still confused. What is so special about this woman?”

“Oh, she’s a Grimm. Distant cousin I think.”

He said it so casually and Alexander’s expression just remained blank. This must have been some type of joke.

“Just so I understand your request, you would like me to babysit a Grimm. A possible relative of yours who no doubt could decapitate me at any time.”

Nick shook his head.

“Don’t worry, she’s more of a lover, not a fighter. That’s why I need you to look after her. You don’t have to watch her around the clock. Just, keep an eye on her.”

Alexander still didn’t look enthusiastic.

“Anyway, thanks again.”

Nick went rushing out the room and Alexander followed, only to be blocked by a woman that was now peering at him curiously. He caught the end of Nick’s jacket as he rushed to the staircase. Alexander growled inwardly.

“Burkhardt.”

He was clearly displeased. His eyes moved back to the very reason for his annoyance.

You blinked, wearing a small smile.

“Nice to meet you, I’m (Y/N) Reinhardt. You must be Alexander.”

He could already feel the migraine forming.

Despite his displeasure with the situation, he did as Nick asked. After all, he had stopped a revolution. The least he could do was do this simple task. Alexander wrote down the address for both his office and home. Handing it to you. Since Rosalee, Monroe and the rest of Nick’s crew were off to vacation, he couldn’t exactly ask for a hand. So he gave you his number.

“This is my main office. If you need anything, you’re free to stop by. I cannot bodyguard you everyday, so I encourage you to avoid placing yourself in situations where you will be a target for Wesen.”

“I won’t have to fight, right? Wesen I mean.”

He thought it was a joke, but you seemed generally concerned at the thought.

“You’ve never fought a wesen before?”

“What! Of course not! Why would I go around beating up random people? Do I look like a psycho?”

He had half the mind to tell you that your ancestors did in fact run around decapitating his kind. But from your anxiety of just fighting one, he figured the idea of death might just make you faint. He didn’t need the extra work.

“Where do you work?”

You perked up.

“At the vet. I love animals. I’m interning. I’m hoping one day to open my own clinic.”

The way your face lit up almost made him forget that you were a descendant of trained killers.

“Give me your address. Burkhardt would be disappointed if he returned and I’d failed at something so simple.”

You nodded, giving him the necessary information.

“So you’re pretty important huh? Nick said you were some kind of minister. Also this Wesen Council I’m assuming is filled with just Wesen. What do you guys do exactly? How many Wesen are there in the world? Are there more like you? Does it hurt when you woge? It looks like it hurts.”

With every question he could feel a notch of his patience slip away. Surely if his ancestors could see him now they would be rolling in their graves.

“I have to go. Call me if you have any questions.”

He just walked away and you shrugged, heading back to your day job.

For the first week, nothing spectacular happened. You would stop by the office after you got off your shift and just ask him a long list of questions. Luckily he’d learned to multitask, so he still got his work done. But your presence was still very much a distraction. Especially when you showed up unannounced and he had to deal with..

“A GRIMM!!”

The scream echoed throughout the building and he heard a crash from the hallway. His instinct was to rush to you to explain the situation. Most of the ministers were aware of the union, but many of the employees still had a hard time adjusting. He broke the corner just in time to see you scrambling in his direction.

He intended to lecture you for being careless, but you ran right into his chest, holding onto him desperately. He didn’t realize until he looked down that you were crying. It took him a second to gather himself and when he pulled you back, there was a scratch on your cheek, the blood running down. You looked absolutely terrified and he felt anger bubble in his chest when he saw your attacker follow after.

“Benjamin!”

Alexander’s tone was firm, and you moved behind him when you saw the man who’d attacked you. He was still woge.

A balam.

He changed back when he heard the call, stopping right in front of Alexander.

“S-She’s a Grimm!”

“I am aware. I’m sure you’ve been briefed. If not I insist that you become more acquainted with the policies. Burkhardt and any others associated with him are our allies. Any harm to her will result in unsavory consequences.” Alexander’s eyes glowed and Benjamin swallowed, taking a step back.

“I-I apologize sir. It won’t happen again.”

“See that it doesn’t.”

Nothing else was said. Benjamin casted a look in your direction before he nodded, turning and walking away. Once his form disappeared, Alexander turned to you fully.

“I informed you that whenever you come you must let me know in advance. It’s dangerous for you even here. We were once infiltrated by extremists. I’ve been diligent about the individuals within the organization but we can’t get reckless.”

You still looked shaken, but you nodded.

“Y-Yes. I-I’m sorry. I should have called.”

You were still holding onto his sleeve and he noticed that your entire body was shaking. He couldn’t help but observe how different you were from what he expected. They were always told that Grimms were to be feared. They lacked nothing. They were strong, ambitious, driven and dangerous. Not to ever be taken lightly.

Without compassion.

After meeting Nick, he realized that those previous claims were wrong. But with you, it seemed to instill just that. Above all else, Grimms were still people. Like all of them. Even more so with you. Your knowledge of their world was vague, if even that. He never thought he’d be responsible for protecting the very thing he was taught to fear.

“Reinhardt.”

You looked up at him shakily and he felt sympathetic at how scared you truly were. That had obviously been your first aggressive encounter with a Wesen.

“I gave Burkhardt my word, I will protect you.”

Your eyes held a certain type of vulnerability. As you looked at him, he saw it, the trust you’d placed in him. You nodded, and he intended to carry you to clean the cut, but you hugged him again and he froze.

“Thank you.”

Your hands were wrapped around him, and he couldn’t get his body to move. He just stood there, feeling a bit strange at the warmth that ran through his chest as you held him. Before he realized it, he was returning the embrace.

He didn't dwell on it.

The second week it was much more calm.

You always sent a text before you showed up and he made a habit of meeting you in the lobby to ensure no more scuffles happened. It seemed that after the encounter you became somewhat glued to his side. You still badgered him with questions, but whenever you looked at him, there was a twinkle in your eyes he wasn’t fully familiar with.

At least not from a Grimm.

“So you’re Wesen too right? What kind?”

He was filling out a document when you asked the question.

“I am Pflichttreue.”

You straightened in your seat.

“Loyal, dutiful, ambitious.”

The way you listed it off sounded like something you recited from a book. He looked up and you smiled awkwardly.

“Sorry. I’ve been reading the books. I got a few from my grandmother along with a lot of other stuff. I always thought they were just artifacts. I guess there was more to it than that.”

He’d heard of Grimm collections. He could only imagine what some people would do to get their hands on that.

“You should place those items in a secure place. Some Wesen would kill to obtain or destroy those items."

You smiled.

“Don’t worry, they're safe. Nick told me the same thing.”

You half expected him to ask you where these books were, but instead he’d warned you to keep them safe.

“You’re a pretty nice guy aren't you Alexander. Most people would have just pretended to do this, but you’ve been looking out for me. I appreciate it.”

You were fiddling with your sleeve. He caught the action.

“I know by Grimm standards I’m pretty much a disappointment. I’ve seen Nick and Trubel. They're both strong and fearless. I admire them and I get why they do what they do but I..I still don’t get why Wesen and Grimms have to be enemies. Can’t we all just get along?”

The question was not one he’d fully considered. If he hadn’t met Nick he would still be on the opposite side of things. Grimms were the only beings on earth capable of seeing past the mask. That’s why they were dangerous.

He’d like to say that the Grimms were the villains of the stories, but they weren’t completely at fault. There were Wesen out there that were merciless. Some that needed the fear of someone that could stand up to them. No one involved was without blame. You were still new to all that came with your abilities, so he expected such a naive point of view.

“In this world there is good and evil. It is often hard to distinguish between which side we are on. Are the Grimms right for eradicating Wesen? Are we wrong for living up to our true natures? There is too much to account for. Too much that the world cannot control. All we can truly do is survive.”

From the way your face fell, that clearly wasn’t the answer you wanted. At the moment, he couldn’t provide much more.

Week three he was the one who stopped by your place of work. He hadn’t seen you for three days. Although you texted that you were alright, he needed to verify. Just for a piece of mind. Walking in, he asked to see you. Sitting patiently he waited with some other customers. When you walked out wearing scrubs, he could see your surprise at his visit.

“Alexander?”

“Ms. Reinhardt, are you free for lunch, I would like to treat you.”

You looked hesitant, but you still agreed.

“I get a break in ten minutes. Do you mind waiting?”

He shook his head.

“Okay, I’ll be out soon.”

You were heading back and he watched you go. There was something in his gut that twisted at the sight of you disappearing into the other room. He didn’t understand why his stomach churned at the idea of you away from him. Maybe it was his duty to the promise he made. He tried not to dwell on it as he took a seat, waiting.

On cue, ten minutes later you were dressed more casually, purse in hand. You smiled at the receptionist as you left for your break. Alexander followed at your side.

The trip to the cafe nearby was quiet. He couldn’t read why you seemed less cheery than usual. There was an almost sullen atmosphere around you. Before you could step inside he took your wrist, leading you to the side, out of earshot of others.

“Has something happened?”

You just shook your head.

“Nothing happened, everything is fine.”

You managed a smile, but he could see the sadness behind it. He couldn’t understand the reason.

“If that is true, then why are you distant? Why do you seem sad?”

You swallow. It seems you were struggling to keep up the facade you were trying so hard to maintain. Your lips quivered. It finally looked like too much for you to hide.

“D-Do you hate me Alexander?”

He was puzzled.

“Where is this coming from, I do not understand why you would-”

“Do you hate me!”

This time you were yelling and a woman that passed by stared. He was lost, completely and utterly lost. When he saw the tears begin to form in your eyes, he felt defeated. Why did any personal feelings he had for you matter?

His only job was to watch you until Burkhardt came back. That was all. His like or dislike should not even be a factor yet..watching you so hurt at the idea of him hating you did something to him. He could almost feel your pain.

He took your shoulders gently and you looked up at him.

“I do not hate you.”

It was the most honest he’d been with himself in ages. There was instant relief in your eyes.

“Really..”

Alexander nodded.

“There is nothing in this world that would make me hate someone as compassionate as you.”

He meant it too. Maybe it was due to how different we were compared to the stories and assumptions that he heard. Possibly the way you looked at him. Like he wasn’t some soldier, or an assassin, or even a minister fighting for a world of peace among Wesen. You didn’t see those attributes. To you, everyone was just a person. Not the beast that was hidden. But souls that deserved to have everything, regardless of how different they were.

“Do you hate me?”

You shook your head immediately, and he found himself smiling. There was also the aspect of your honesty. How easy it was to read you. How transparent you were with him.

“I am glad.”

For the time being, that felt like enough.

At the end of week four, Nick had returned and expressed his thanks. He was pleased that you were safe and seemed generally more sure of your place given the situation. Alexander knew then that there was really no reason for him to continue to see you. That’s why he didn’t understand why he was now standing in Rosalee’s shop, hoping to see you.

“Alexander? What’s wrong?”

Nick looked ready for just about any terrible news and Alexander laughed internally at the irony. His reaction had been quite the same when he came in unexpectedly.

Monroe and Rosalee came out of the back room, and when he saw you follow behind with a smile on your face, he felt instant relief. He hadn’t seen you for a while since Nick returned and he realized at that moment that he’d gotten used to you coming to his office. Asking him questions. Making observations.

You looked over when you saw him, surprise rushing over your features.

“Alexander, is something wrong?”

He moved to your side, shaking his head. He realized then why he had been having such reactions to you. His focus on his work and need to carry out his duties had left him oblivious to how quickly his feelings for you had started to change.

How easily he’d fallen for you.

“I needed to see you.”

You tilt your head and Nick seems just as curious.

“Why?”

He just smiled.

“Because I cannot seem to stop thinking about you Ms. Reinhardt.”

The admission took a minute to sink in, but when it did, heat rushed to your cheeks like the eruption of a volcano. You were blushing and stuttering incoherently and his smile just grew wider. Monroe and Nick looked a bit awkward, and Rosalee just wore a soft smile at the very sweet moment.

“W-We’ll just leave you two alone.” Monroe blurted, taking Rosalee’s hand. Nick nodded, making a sharp turn following him into the backroom. The double doors closed, but it did nothing to stop the flush on your face.

“I apologize if I am being too forward.”

You shook your head bashfully.

“I-It’s okay. I appreciate the honesty.”

Your voice was somewhat small. Alexander took a step forward and you could feel the quick increase of your pulse. You seem to truly process just how tall he was compared to you. His stature, his values, those eyes..you were weak.

“I would very much like to see you often, not out of an obligation, but a choice. One I hope that you share.”

You nod, because you wanted nothing more than to see him. Be with him. The fact that he was standing here making such a request meant more to you than he’ll ever know.

“I..I want that too..”

You caught the quick flash in his eyes and you swallow. Alexander smirked.

“Would it be too bold of me to make another request?”

You were so distracted by his eyes that you barely processed the question.

“A request..”

It was a mutter.

Alexander nodded, hand lifting as he placed it delicately on your cheek. You all but held your breath when his thumb brushed your lower lip. Before you could think of a response, he leaned in. The softness of his lips felt almost illegal. He shouldn’t have tasted so good, smelled so heavenly.

You pulled in a sharp breath through your nose and his hand moved to your waist, pulling you slightly off the ground and flushed to his body. Your fingers flattened against his suit, relishing in the feel of muscle. You always suspected there was something that his neat tailored suits covered up.

Your hands reached up, wrapping around his neck as you returned his kiss with equal amount of passion. Your hands went from feeling to grabbing. Alexander groaned and you moaned yourself when your back knocked into a shelf. A few of the bottles jingled, but neither of you pulled away.

You were pawing at his body, and he was doing quite the same. This time you were the one who pushed and Alexander grinned into the kiss, just as he knocked a bottle to the floor. You were trying to push his suit jacket off his body when Nick and the others walked into the room to find out what the commotion was.

“H-Hey! No sex in the shop!!” Monroe yelled.

Neither of you responded, still kissing feverishly as another bottle hit the floor. Nick winced. Both at the sight of both of you going at it like teenagers and the damage to Rosalee’s shop. Monroe turned back to Nick.

“You’re paying for this.”

“Why me!!”

“Because you’re the one who did this!”

He pointed to the both of you, still making out shamelessly.

Nick scratched the back of his head.

In hindsight, he made a pretty good cupid.

McCall Jr., based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: Hal Mohr. Art direction: Anton Grot. Film editing: Ralph Dawson. Music: Erich Wolfgang Korngold, adapted from works by Felix Mendelssohn. Costume design: Max Rée. Choreography: Bronislava Nijinska The spirit that animates this version of A Midsummer Night's Dream is not that of William Shakespeare but Felix Mendelssohn. Shakespeare's text has been trimmed to a nubbin and hashed up by the "arrangers," Charles Kenyon and Mary C. McCall Jr., and it's gabbled by the all-star cast. Strangely, Olivia de Havilland and Mickey Rooney are the worst offenders, since they are the only members of the cast of Max Reinhardt's celebrated 1934 Hollywood Bowl production who made it into the movie. De Havilland delivers her lines with heavy emphasis on seemingly random words and with odd pauses, while Rooney punctuates every line with giggles, chortles, and shrieks that affect some viewers like fingernails on a chalkboard. Nobody in the cast seems to be aware that they're speaking verse. Fortunately, the decision was made to use the Mendelssohn overture and incidental music (along with snippets of other works by Mendelssohn), and to have it orchestrated by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The result is an opulently balletic version of the play, taking advantage of what can be done in movies that can't be done on stage. Is it good? Maybe not, but it's much more fun than the stodgily reverent version of Romeo and Juliet (George Cukor, 1936) that MGM came up with the following year. Casting James Cagney as Bottom/Pyramus and Joe E. Brown as Flute/Thisby was a masterstroke, and if they had been directed by someone with a surer sense of American comic idiom than Reinhardt, the Viennese refugee from Hitler who spoke very little English (co-director William Dieterle, a German émigré, acted as interpreter), the results would have been classic -- as it is, they're just bumptious fun. Much of the design for the movie is reminiscent of the work of early 20th century illustrators of children's books like Walter Crane, Arthur Rackham, and John R. Neill, though with a tendency toward the twee. But there is a spectacular moment in the film when Oberon gathers the fairies, gnomes, and bat-winged sprites to depart, under a billowing smoky black train. The cinematography by Hal Mohr won the only write-in Oscar ever granted by the Academy.

The Warner Bros film featured an all-star cast, including James Cagney, Mickey Rooney, Olivia de Havilland, Jean Muir, Joe E. Brown, Dick Powell, Ross Alexander, Anita Louise, Victor Jory, and Ian Hunter. Nini Theilade, playing a fairy in the last picture, lived to 102, dying in 2018--and was outlived only by Olivia de Havilland (who survived until 104, dying in 2020).

Honestly, I've been wanting to write about my Kingdom AU.....because I enjoy it a little TOO much.....hehe....oh and Chucky has his German accent with a mixture of his normal American one.....

The Maneyed king rested upon his throne, waiting. He had heard the news of arrivals into his lands. Curious to meet them firsthand and inspect the arrivals and figure out their intentions of entering his land. He'd grown bored rather quickly as his patience was waning and wanting to be elsewhere. He always prided himself on always being punctual, and his new guests being tardy didn't leave the best impression on him. He stood, having waited long enough, and allowed his bear-skinned robe to fall to his feet. His was not one for fancy attire, preferring the more worn tattered rugged look as opposed to his queen. He wore his battle-plated armor, accompanied by marron leather straps along with scarred chest. His black boots gave off a metallic shine, the necklace of fangs worn, draping down his chest, and the cow leather wrapping along his fists always prepared for battle, to the long, mighty sword at his side, with mystic cravings at the handle. However, the most noticeable thing about him was the various number of scars he had. To the ones on his face scattering along his body and chest. Bite marks from wolves to the bear he now wears along his back. The beast had clamped his jaws around his shoulder nearly ripping the arm off, however, he managed to slay it keeping his arm. He shows them with pride...however the mighty king conceals the ones slashed along his back, given to him by his father.

And where he received his name.....Madeye....No one knows exactly what had happened. There have been rumors, and many stories about how King Charles received his distinguishing feature. What they do know is that it must have been something powerful to near take his eye. Now he's partially blind with his eye, but that doesn't stop him, he could slaughter a room of people with both his eyes closed with ease. He walked down the aisle, past statues, royal paintings of his family, and his vast collection of blades and skulls, to the great doors, pushing them open. He altered his direction to that of the balcony staring down at his kingdom, watching his people. Till something caught his eye, people we're approaching the front gates.

"At last"

Before returning to his throne, he watched them slowly enter the castle, struggling to stumble through the crowd. He returned to his seat and waited, both hands on the armrest, and his feet planted firmly on the ground.

"Sir they're here"

"I can see that General"

"I apologize for our tardiness t--"

He waved him off, silencing him, not wanting to bother with the long speech.

"Present yourselves to King Charles Lee Loman Reinhardt at once"

He tilted his head a bit, it had been quite some time since someone used his full name. He was used to the alias of Madeye.

"W---We are Alexander and Benedict sir.....we are merely passing through"

"We pose no threat, all we ask is safe passage."

"....hm.....Very well...."

He leaned back into his throne, tilting his head to the left, raising a brow.

"Be gone with you then"

The guards, took them away leading them into the kingdom.

"Do you suppose we can do it brother?"

"....he is blind, and worn, I'm shocked no one made an attempt at stealing his crown."

"That's just it.....he wasn't wearing it"

"Well, he surely keeps it somewhere in that castle... suppose a vault, of pedestal...we meet back here by moon down"

DJANGO REINHARDT, INVENTEUR DU JAZZ MANOUCHE

‘’His technique is awesome! Even today, nobody has really come to the state that he was playing at. As good as players are, they haven't gotten to where he is. There's a lot of guys that play fast and a lot of guys that play clean, and the guitar has come a long way as far as speed and clarity go, but nobody plays with the whole fullness of expression that Django has. I mean, the combination of incredible speed – all the speed you could possibly want – but also the thing of every note have a specific personality. You don't hear it. I really haven't heard it anywhere but with Django.”

Né le 23 janvier 1910 à Liberchies, en Belgique, Django Reinhardt était le fils de Jean-Eugène Weiss, un violoniste et pianiste manouche ambulant établi à Paris qui utilisait le nom de sa femme Laurence Reinhardt, une danseuse, afin d’éviter la conscription. Le certificat de naissance de Django le décritvait sous le nom de ‘’Jean Reinhart, fils de Jean Baptiste Reinhart, artiste, et de Laurence Reinhart, maîtresse de maison, domiciliée à Paris.’’

JEUNESSE ET ÉDUCATION

Un certain nombre d’auteurs ont prétendu que le surnom Django était un terme manouche signifiant ‘’I awake’’. En réalité, le terme pouvait aussi être un diminutif de Jean. Django a passé les premières années de sa vie sur les routes d’Italie, de France et d’Algérie avant de s’établir à Paris. C’est à Paris que Django avait commencé à jouer du violon, du banjo et de la guitare. Le père de Django aurait joué de la musique dans un groupe familial composé de lui-même et de ses sept frères. Une ancienne photographie montre d’ailleurs le groupe avec le père de Django au piano.

Django a commencé à jouer de la musique très jeune. Après avoir appris à jouer du violon à l’oreille (il n’avait jamais appris à lire musique), Django avait reçu un banjo en cadeau à l’âge de douze ans. Django avait vite appris à jouer en imitant les gestes des musiciens qu’il admirait, parmi lesquels on remarquait Jean ‘’Poulette’’ Castro et Auguste ‘’Gusti’’ Malha, sans oublier son oncle Guiligou, qui jouait du violon, du banjo et de la guitare. Django était tellement talentueux et précoce pour son âge que l’accordéoniste Vetese Guerino l’avait engagé pour l’accompagner dans des bals. Django avai seulement dix-huit ans lorsqu’un autre accordéoniste, Jean Vaissade, l’avait invité à enregistrer un premier disque.

Dès l’âge de quinze ans, Django gagnait sa vie comme musicien dans les cafés, souvent en compagnie de son frère Joseph.

À cette époque, Django ne jouait pas encore de jazz, même s’il en avait probablement déjà entendu et qu’il était sans doute intrigué par le type de jazz pratiqué par des musiciens américains exilés comme Billy Arnold. Django avait reçu une éducation très rudimentaire et avait appris à lire et à écrire seulement une fois parvenu à l’âge adulte, grâce à l’aide de Gérard Lévesque et Stéphane Grapelli.

Malgré ces lacunes, tous les espoirs semblaient permis pour le jeune Django. C’est alors que la fatalité avait frappé.

UN MARIAGE ET UN ACCIDENT

À l’âge de dix-sept ans, Django avait épousé Florine ‘’Bella’’ Mayer, une femme qui habitait dans le même établissement gitan que lui. Le couple avait été marié selon la coutume gitane, ce qui signifiait qu’il ne s’agissait pas d’un mariage officiel reconnu par la loi française. L’année suivante, Django avait réalisé le premier enregistrement de sa carrière. Sur cet enregistrement de 1928, Django avait joué du banjo et accompagné les accordéonistes Maurice Alexander, Jean Vaissade et Victor Marceau, ainsi que le chanteur Maurice Chaumel. À l’époque, le nom de Django était déjà connu internationalement, en particulier de l’Anglais Jack Hylton, qui était venu en France spécialement pour l’entendre. Hylton lui avait même offert de l’accompagner en tournée à Londres.

Django n’avait pas encore eu la chance de jouer avec son nouveau groupe qu’il avait falli perdre la vie. Dans la nuit du 2 novembre 1928, Django était allé dormir dans la voiture qu’il partageait avec sa femme dans une caravane. Par inadvertance, Django avait renversé une chandelle, ce qui avait mis le feu à la substance extrêmement inflammable dont sa femme se servait pour fabriquer des fleurs artificielles. Le wagon n’avait pas tardé à être encerclé par les flammes. Le couple était parvenu à s’enfuir, mais Django avai été gravement brûlé sur une grande partie de son corps.

À la suite de l’incidennt, Django avait dû être hospitalisé durant dix-huit mois, mais il avait toujours refusé de se faire amputer la jambe droite. Déjango était éventuellement parvenu à se rétablir et avait même réussi à marcher sans avoir à se servir d’une canne. Cependant, le quatrième et le cinquième doigt de la main gauche de Django avaient été gravement brûlés. Les médecins avaient même prédit qu’il ne pourrait plus jamais jouer de la guitare. Refusant d’abandonner, Djangp avait progressivement retrouvé sa dextérité grâce à une guitare que son frère Joseph avait fait modifier spécialement pour lui. Joseph était d’ailleurs lui aussi un guitariste accompli. Même si Django n’avait jamais recouvré l’usage de ses deux doigts, il était parvenu à récupérer sa virtuosité en se concentrant sur son index gauche et ses doigts du milieu de la main.

Un an après l’incendie, en 1929, Bella avait donné naissance à un fils, Henri ‘’Lousson’’ Reinhardt. Le couple s’était séparé peu après. Le nouveau-né avait éventuellement pris le surnom de la mère de son nouvel époux et était devenu lui-même un excellent musicien. Il avait même enregistré plus tard avec Django.

C’est après sa sortie de l’hôpital en 1930 que Django avait découvert le jazz, principalement en écoutant les disques de Louis Armstrong et de Duke Ellington.

Après s’être séparé de sa femme et de son fils, Django avait voyagé à travers la France et avait joué dans de petits clubs. Django ne poursuivait aucun objectif en particulier, il se contentait simplement de survivre, dépensant au fur et à mesure ce qu’il gagnait. Django était accompagné dans ses voyages par sa nouvelle petite amie, Sophie Ziegler. Surnommée ‘’Naguine’’, celle-ci était une cousine éloignée de Django.

UNE RENCONTRE DÉTERMINANTE

Au cours des années qui ont suivi l’incendie, Django avait poursuivi sa réhabilitation. Il avait aussi commencé à expérimenter sur la guitare que son frère lui avait offerte. Après avoir joué plusieurs genres de musique, Django avait été initié auijazz par une connaissance, Émile Savitry, qui possédait une vaste collection de disques dont ceux de Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Joe Venuti et Eddie Lang. Le duo formé par Venuti et Lang avait d’ailleurs exercé une influence considérable sur le futur duo de Django et Stéphane Grapelli).

C’est en développant son intérêt pour le jazz que Django avait fait la rencontre de Stéphane Grapelli, un jeune violoniste qui partageait ses goûts musicaux. En 1928, Grapelli avait été membre de l’orchestre de l’Hôtel Ambassadeur aux côtés de Paul Whiteman et Joe Venuti . Au début de 1934, Django et Grapelli avaient tous deux été membres du groupe de Louis Vola dans le cadre d’un engagemen au club La Croix du Sud. Bien qu’ils aient été fort différents (Django était un autodidacte et Grapelli avait une formation de violoniste classique), l’étincelle avait jailli immédiatement entre les deux hommes.

De 1934 jusqu’au déclenchement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Django et Grapelli avaient été les solistes principaux du Quintette du Hot Club de France, qui venait d’être fondé à Paris. Le quintette était devenu éventuellement le groupe de jazz européen le plus influent de son époque. Le frère de Django, Joseph, faisait également partie du groupe, avec Roger Chaput à la guitare et Louis Vola à la contrebasse. Le quintette était un des seuls groupes de jazz à être composé uniquement d’instruments à cordes.

Le 14 mars 1933, Django avait enregistré deux pistes de ‘’Parce que je vous aime’’ et de ‘’Si, j’aime Suzy’’, des pièces chantées qui exigeaient beaucoup de support à la guitare (trois guitares, un accordéon, un violon et une contrebasse). En août 1934, Django avait fait d’autres enregistrements avec des guitaristes, incluant son premier enregistrement avec le quintette. Si la grande majorité des enregistrements du quintette comprenaient une grande variété de cuivres, en plus du piano et d’autres instruments, la structure de base était essentiellement basée sur les cordes. Les premiers enregistrements de Django avaient été produits par les Disques Swing, une étiquette fondée en 1937 par le critique de jazz Hughes Panassié et Charles Delauney, et qui produisait aussi les disques de Coleman Hawkins et Benny Carter.

Aux États-Unis, les Disques Decca avaient produit trois enregistrements du Quintette avec Django à la guitare. Un autre enregistrement réalisé en 1935 était attribué à "Stephane Grappelli & His Hot 4 with Django Reinhardt". Django avait également joué et enregistré avec plusieurs musiciens américains comme Adelaide Hall, Coleman Hawkins (qui avait plus tard fait un séjour à Paris) et Benny Carter. Django avait aussi participé à une jam session et à une émission de radio avec Louis Armstrong. Plus tard dans sa carrière, Django avait joué avec Dizzy Gillespie en France.

En 1938, le quartet de Django s’était produit devant des milliers de spectateurs au Kilburn State Auditorium de Londres. Quelques semaines plus tard, le groupe avait donné une prestation au Palladium de Londres.

L’IMPACT DE LA SECONDE GUERRE MONDIALE

Lorsque la Seconde Guerre mondiale avait éclaté, le quintet original de Django était en tournée au Royaume-Uni. Django était rentré à Paris dès qu’il avait appris la nouvelle, mais, afin de ne prendre aucun risque, il avait laissé son épouse au Royaume-Uni. Quant à Grapelli, il était demeuré au Royaume-Uni pour toute la durée de la guerre. Django avait alors décidé de former un nouveau quintet. Hubert Rostaing avait remplacé Grapelli au violon.

Django étant d’origine gitane, le déclenchement de la guerre risquait de limiter la diffusion de sa musique, puisque depuis l’arrivée au pouvoir d’Hitler en 1933, on interdisait non seulement aux Gitans de résider dans les villes, mais on les enfermait dans des camps où la stérilisation était pratique courante. Les Gitans de sexe masculin étaient également tenus de porter un triangle de couleur brune sur leur poitrine afin de les identifier plus facilement. Ce symbole était assez semblable au triangle rose que devaient porter les homosexuels, ou à l’étoile jaune qu’on imposerait bientôt aux Juifs. Mais la persécution ne s’était pas arrêtée là puisque durant la guerre, des Gitans avaient été régulièrement exterminés dans les camps de concentration. En France, Les Gitans étaient utilisés comme main-d’oeuvre servile dans les fermes et dans les usines. On estime que pendant l’holocauste, entre 600 000 et 1,5 million de Gitans ont été exterminés en Europe.

Le troisième Reich n’avait pas une très haute opinion du jazz, qu’il considérait comme une musique décadente. Initialement banni complètement, le jazz avait cependant fini par être toléré, car le nombre d’amateurs en Allemagne et dans les territoires contrôlés par les Nazis n’avait pas cessé de croîre. La sévérité des politiques limitant la circulation du jazz était encore moins rigoureuse en France occupée, selon Andy Fry. En effet, on diffusait du jazz non seulement sur Radio France, la station officielle du régime de Vichy, mais sur Radio Paris, qui était contrôlée directement par les Allemands. Une nouvelle génération d’amateurs de jazz, surnommée les Zazous, était apparue, et avait envahi le Hot Club de France. En plus de cet intérêt accru, plusieurs musiciens américains qui avaient été basés à Paris dans les années trente étaient retournés aux États-Unis au début de la guerre, ce qui avait ouvert plus de débouchés pour les musiciens français. À l’époque, Django était le plus célèbre musicien de jazz en Europe et gagnait beaucoup d’argent, même s’il était constamment menacé d’être arrêté par les Nazis en raison de son origine ethnique.

En dépit de cette menace, Django avait encore accru ses horizons musicaux durant cette période. Grâce à un système d’amplification plutôt rudimentaire, Django avait mis sur pied une sorte de big band doté d’une importante section de cuivres. Il avait également flirté avec la musique classique, écrivant notamment une messe pour les Gitans et une symphonie. Comme Django ne pouvait pas lire la musique, il avait chargé un assistant de transcrire ses improvisations sur papier. Sa pièce intitulée ‘’Rhythm Futur’’ avait d’ailleurs été conçue expressément pour être acceptable aux Nazis.

En 1943, Django avait épousé à Salbris sa conjointe de longue date Sophie ‘’Naguine’’ Ziegler. Le couple a eu un fils, Babik Reinhardt, qui avait suivi les traces de son père en devenant plus tard un guitariste respecté.

Lorsque la guerre avait commencé à tourner au désavantage des Allemands en 1943, un rationnement strict avait été imposé à Paris. Il était devenu de plus en plus difficile pour Django de pratiquer son métier, car plusieurs membres de son entourage avaient été arrêtés ou avaient rejoint les rangs de la résistance.

Même si la première tentative de Django de fuir la France occupée s’était terminée par son arrestation, un amateur de jazz allemand, l’officier de la Lutwaffe, Dietrich Schulz-Köhn, lui avait permis de retourner à Paris. Django avait fait une seconde tentative quelques jours plus tard, mais il avait connu un nouvel échec lorsqu’il avait été arrêté au milieu de la nuit par des gardiens de frontière suisses, qui l’avaient forcé à rentrer à Paris.

L’une des compositions de Django, son célèbre ‘’Nuages’’ (1940), était même devenue l’hymne non officiel de la libération de Paris. La popularité de ‘’Nuages’’ était telle que lors d’un concert à la Salle Playel, la foule avait obligé Django à jouer la pièce trois fois d’affilée ! Dans les magasins, le disque avait été vendu à plus de 100 copies.

Si environ 600 000 Gitans avaient été internés et exterminés durant le ‘’Porajmos’’ (ainsi qu’on appelait le génocide gitan), Django avait eu davantage de chance et avait survécu au conflit.

RENOMMÉE INTERNATIONALE

Après la guerre, Django avait rejoint Stéphane Grappelli au Royaume-Uni. À l’automne 1946, Django avait fait sa première tournée aux États-Unis. La tournée avait débuté au Cleveland Music Hall. Dans le cadre de ce concert, Django était l’invité spécial de l’orchestre de Duke Ellington. À l’époque, Django avait joué avec plusieurs musiciens et compositeurs, comme par exemple Maury Deutsch. À la fin de la tournée, Django avait joué deux fois à Carnegie Hall où il avait été chaudement ovationné. Le premier soir, il avait même donné six rappels.

En dépit de la fierté qu’il avait ressenti pour avoir joué avec Duke Ellington, l’expérience avait été quelque peu décevante, car Django n’était pas un membre à part entière de l’orchestre. Il avait joué quelques pièces à la fin du concert, mais aucun arrangement particulier n’avait été écrit pour lui. Après la tournée, Django avait obtenu un contrat au Café Society Uptown, où il exécutait quatre solos par jour en compagnie du groupe-maison du club. Les performances de Django avaient attiré un large public. Django, qui n’avait pu apporter sa guitare habituelle aux États-Unis, avait dû jouer sur une guitare électrique qu’il avait empruntée. Toujours aussi perfectionniste, Django avait toutefois déploré que cette guitare n’avait pu rendre justice à la délicatesse de son style. Django avait aussi reçu des offres pour aller jouer en Californie, mais celles-ci ne s’étaient pas concrétisées. Fatigué d’attendre, Django était retourné en France en février 1947.

Après son retour en France, Django avait de nouveau tenté de se retremper dans la façon de vivre des Gitans, mais il avait eu de la difficulté à s’adapter à la vie dans la société d’après-guerre. Django participait parfois à des concerts sans amplificateur et refusait même à l’occasion de sortir de son lit. Avec les années, Django, qui avait toujours été imprévisible et indiscipliné, avait acquis une réputation de musicien capricieux, tant auprès des autres musiciens que des amateurs ou des gérants. Malgré tout, Django avait continué de participer bon mal, mal an, au salon artistique de Montmartre, pendant lequel il improvisait avec son fidèle collaborateur, Stéphane Grapelli.

De passage à Rome en 1949, Django avait recruté trois musiciens de jazz italiens (un bassiste, un pianiste et un batteur) avec lesquels il avait enregistré plus de soixante pièces en studio. Dans le cadre d’une réunion avec Grappelli, Django avait de nouveau utilisé sa vieille guitare acoustique Selmer-Maccaferri. L’enregistrement de cette session a été rendu public pour la première fois à la fin des années 1950.

De retour à Paris en juin 1950, Django avait été invité à se joindre à une réception donnée en l’honneur de Benny Goodman. À la fin de la guerre, Goodman avait invité Django à venir le rejoindre aux États-Unis. De guerre lasse, Django avait fini par accepter. Mais après s’être rendu compte qu’il ne pourrait servir que de faire-valoir à Goodman (qui n’avait pas été surnommé le ‘’Roi du Swing’’ pour rien), Django s’était ravisé et était demeuré en France.

DERNIÈRES ANNÉES

En 1951, Django s’était retiré à Samois-sur-Seine, près de Fontainebleau, où il avait vécu jusqu’à sa mort. À la fin de sa vie, tout en se consacrant à sa passion pour la peinture, Django avait continué de se produire dans les clubs de Paris et avait même commencé à jouer de la guitare électrique. Bien qu’il ait toujours été réticent à jouer de cet instrument, Django branchait parfois un micro sur sa vieille guitare acoustique Selmer. Dans les derniers mois de sa vie, Django avait commencé à explorer une nouvelle direction musicale, qui intégrait le vocabulaire du bebop. Malheureusement, les enregistrements réalisés au cours de cette période avaient connu beaucoup moins de succès.

Le 16 mai 1953, Django sortait à peine de la gare de Fontainebleau après avoir joué dans un club de Paris, lorsqu’il avait été victime d’une hemmoragie cérébrale. Comme c’était un samedi, il avait fallu une journée complète au médecin pour se rendre à destination. Lors de son arrivée à l’hôpital de Fontainebleau, Django était déjà mort. Il avait seulement quarante-trois ans.

RAYONNEMENT INTERNATIONAL

Il est impossible de savoir quelle direction la musique de Django aurait prise s’il avait vécu plus longtemps et s’il avait pu pleinement intégrer les influences du bebop dans ses compositions, mais on ne peut nier que Django était un virtuose qui avait su transcender les limites de son handicap afin de créer un art complètement nouveau.

Pour les guitaristes anglais et américains, il était invraisemblable qu’un musicien autodidacte comme Django ait pu réaliser autant de magnifiques enregistrements compte tenu de son handicap. Comme l’écrivait le guitariste et pédagogue Ian Cruickshank:

‘’It wasn't until 1938, and the Quintet's first tour of England, that guitarists [in the U.K.] were able to witness Django's amazing abilities. His hugely innovative technique included, on a grand scale, such unheard of devices as melodies played in octaves, tremolo chords with shifting notes that sounded like whole horn sections, a complete array of natural and artificial harmonics, highly charged dissonances, super-fast chromatic runs from the open bass strings to the highest notes on the 1st string, an unbelievably flexible and driving right-hand, two and three octave arpeggios, advanced and unconventional chords and a use of the flattened fifth that predated be-bop by a decade. Add to all this Django's staggering harmonic and melodic concept, huge sound, pulsating swing, sense of humour and sheer speed of execution, and it is little wonder that guitar players were knocked sideways upon their first encounter with this full-blown genius.’’

Le journaliste et critique de jazz Hughes Panassié avait commenté en 1942 dans son livre ‘’The Real Jazz’’:

‘’First of all, his instrumental technique is vastly superior to that of all other jazz guitarists. This technique permits him to play with an inconceivable velocity and makes his instrument completely versatile. Though his virtuosity is stupefying, it is no less so than his creative invention. In his solos [...] his melodic ideas are sparkling and ravishing, and their abundance scarcely gives the listener time to catch his breath. Django's ability to bend his guitar to the most fantastic audacities, combined with his expressive inflections and vibrato, is no less wonderful; one feels an extraordinary flame burning through every note.’’

Pour leur part Bill Neil et E. Gates écrivaient en 1945:

‘’Reinhardt set new standards by an almost incredible and hitherto unthought-of technique ... His ideas have a freshness and spontaneity that are at once fascinating and alluring ... [Nevertheless] The characteristics of Reinhardt's music are primarily emotional. His relative association of experience, reinforced by a profound rational knowledge of his instrument; the guitar's possibilities and limitations; his love for music and the expression of it—all are a necessary adjunct to the means of expressing these emotions.’’

POSTÉRITÉ ET HOMMAGES

Le fils aîné de Django, surnommé Lousson (ou Henri Baumgartner), a joué du bebop dans les années 1950 et 1960. Il a adopté le mode de vie des Gitans, mais il a peu enregistré. Le second fils de Django, Babik, avait suivi les traces de son père comme guitariste, mais il avait adopté un style beaucoup plus moderne. Babik a réalisé plusieurs enregistrements avant sa mort en 2001. Après la mort de Django, son jeune frère Joseph avait d’abord eu l’intention d’abandonner la musique, mais on l’avait finalement convaincu de poursuivre sa carrière et d’enregistrer de nouveau. Quant au fils de Joseph, Markus Reinhardt, c’était un violoniste gitan réputé.

Une troisième génération de descendants de Django s’est également illustrée en musique. David Reinhardt, le fils de Babik, avait formé son propre trio. Dallas Baumgartner, le fils de Lousson, étai devenu guitariste et avait voyagé avec les Gitans, même s’il avait attiré peu de fidèles. Un parent éloigné, le violoniste Schnuckenack Reinhardt, s’était fait connaître en Allemagne comme musicien gitan jusqu’à son décès en 2006, et avait contribué à garder l’héritage de Django vivant au cours de la période qui avait suivi sa mort.

Considéré comme un des plus grands guitaristes de tous les temps, et comme le plus important musicien de jazz européen à avoir contribué au développement de la guitare comme instrument de jazz, Django a composé près de cent pièces au cours de sa carrière.

L’influence musicale de Django avait été limitée au début. Dans les années 1950, l’essor du bebop puis du rock n’ roll avaient rendu l’usage des instruments électrifiés prédominant. Mais avec le développement de la musique folk au milieu des années 1960, les compositions de Django étaient revenues à l’ordre du jour. On avait même consacré des festivals et des concerts à sa mémoire. Aux États-Unis, des guitaristes de jazz comme Charlie Byrd et Wes Montgomery avaient été particulièrement influencés par son style. Byrd, qui avait vécu de 1925 à 1999, avait d’ailleurs cité Django comme sa principale influence.

De fait, la musique gitane est devenue si populaire après la mort de Django qu’elle avait donné naissance à de nombreux festivals, comme le Festival Django Reinhardt qui se tient le dernier weekend de juin depuis 1983 à Samois-sur-Seine. De nombreux festivals en l’honneur de Django ont aussi lieu chaque année à travers l’Europe et les États-Unis.

Le cinéma a également rendu hommage à Django. En février 2017, le Festival international du film de Berlin a présenté en première mondiale le film ‘’Django’’, une production française réalisée par Étienne Comar. Le film couvre la fuite de Django lors de l’occupation de Paris par les Nazis en 1943 et mentionne tous les périls et les atrocités qu’il avait dû affronter, tout en continuant de composer et de se produire en spectacle. La musique de Django a été réenregistrée pour le film par le Rosenberg Trio, un groupe de jazz hollandais qui a comme guitariste soliste Stochelo Rosenberg.

Un documentaire intitulé ‘’Djangomania !’’ a également été réalisé en 2005. Le film d’une durée d’une heure a été écrit et réalisé par Jamie Kastner, qui a voyagé un peu partout sur la planète afin de documenter l’influence de la musique de Django à travers le monde.

En 1984, le Kool Jazz Festival, tenu à Carnegie Hall et à l’Avery Fisher Hall, a été consacré exclusivement à Django. Des artistes comme Stéphane Grappelli, Benny Carter et Mike Peters et son groupe de sept musiciens y ont effectué des prestations. Le festival était organisé par George Wein. La mémoire de Django est aussi honorée annuellement à Liberchies, son village de naissance.

De nombreux musiciens ont rendu hommage à Django. L’oeuvre la plus connue est certainement la composition du pianiste du Modern Jazz Quartet, John Lewis, intitulée simplement ‘’Django.’’ Plusieurs autres musiciens ont mentionné Django parmi leurs principales influences, et pas seulement des musiciens de jazz. Jeff Beck a décrit Django comme étant, et de loin, le guitariste le plus étonnant de tous les temps, et le considérait presque comme un surhomme. Le guitariste du groupe Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, et le guitariste de Black Sabbath, Tommy Iommi, qui avaient tous les deux perdus des doigts lors d’incidents, ont été inspirés par l’exemple de Django. Garcia déclarait dans le Frets Magazine en juin 1985:

Nous laissons le mot de la fin au guitariste David Grisman qui avait déclaré: "As far as I'm concerned, no one since has come anywhere close to Django Reinhardt as an improviser or technician."
