You have questions! We might have answers.
What is this collection?
As Maria puts it: this collection is a critical look at some of the things that we, the editors, think have made CQL such a hit around the world. Of course, part of that success comes from the webnovel MDZS and the show CQL themselves—we love the characters, the mystery, and the drama, who doesn’t?! However, the authors in our book also look at topics like translating danmei (both officially and unofficially), adapting danmei for new audiences, and interacting with fandoms and fanworks. The larger argument of the book is that all of these things played a huge role in CQL’s visibility and success, and we wanted to start making those moving pieces visible, especially for audiences who mainly watched CQL in translation.
You keep using the word “academic”—what does that mean, exactly?
Maria: Ok, not to get pedantic here, but this actually touches on some things that I’m really excited about for the book. Traditionally, academic work is written by people who have a deep expertise in the subject (signified by having a PhD and doing specific kinds of research), and then the work itself is peer-reviewed (i.e., sent to other experts in the field for them to evaluate whether it’s sound, original, and interesting enough to publish, without knowing who wrote it). And both of these things are true about our book—our authors have deep knowledge and the book was peer reviewed—but also. We specifically asked for chapters from younger scholars and from fans who also have deep knowledge about topics that academia doesn’t always know or value enough, and we include an interview from the fan-translator K. who did the Exiled Rebels translation. So the hope is that: this book is academic, and also—more!
Who are you?
Yue studies adaptation, fantasy, and popular culture texts using a feminist lens. She wrote an early, influential article about danmei adaptations and also has a book about feminist adaptations of Chinese fantasy.
Maria studies fanworks, contemporary fantasy, and genre literature. She’s scrambling to finish her dissertation right now.
How were the chapter spotlights chosen?
Voluntarily! The concept of a small social media promo was kicked around by some of the contributors and those interested in the idea filled out a short interview with what they wanted to share. We'll be posting about 2 introductions and 2 spotlights a day for the next week or so!
Who's running this social media campaign anyway?
Not the publishers! A few enthusiastic collection contributors got together and, with the assistance of the editors, have put this promotion together. We do not in any way represent Peter Lang in an official capacity! We just worked hard and wanted to share. :)
Are you making any money off of royalties from this book?
LOL not even remotely
What about this promotion?
also no. alas
Where can I find this book?
You can find our listing on Peter Lang’s website here. As for other retailers, a quick search should turn us up!
How can I access this book if I cannot buy it from Peter Lang / [book retailer of choice]?
As collection editors and contributors who signed a legal agreement with Peter Lang, we have granted Peter Lang exclusive right and license to edit, adapt, publish, reproduce, distribute, display, and store our contributions, and we must cooperate fully with the Publisher if the Publisher believes a third party is infringing or is likely to infringe copyright in the contribution.
That being said, these are academic papers, which means that contributors may make copies of the contribution for classroom teaching use! (These copies may not be included in course pack material for onward sale by libraries and institutions). Of course, any linking, collection or aggregation of chapters from the same volume is strictly prohibited.
(FAQ may be updated periodically!) (all posts on Catching Chen Qing Ling)

Hi, how do you know Jackie Chan is a part of LOCH? I’ve been trying to find as much info on this film as possible and I never came across anything mentioning Jackie Chan. Also this film is already a big budget film, which is also the reason why I feel Tsui Hark chose Xiao Zhan specifically because he’s number one in popularity and with immense popularity he comes with good acting so it was a win-win but although I want this film to be released internationally really badly especially my country, I still fear being disappointed. Would they really invest in an international release? and is there a way if fans could get their messages across to them asking for an international release? because i will honestly cry if xiao zhan’s first movie (during my time as his fan) is released and i as a die hard fan can’t even watch it on big screen!!
This is in reference to a previous post.
The full cast has not been officially announced yet, but it was all over the media at the time of GG was announced as Guo Jing. You can find articles mentioning it just by Googling. There were several big name actors mentioned in smaller supporting roles, and it actually caused a bit of controversy at the time among netizens (who, of course, always stress out over who can do justice to their favorite literary heroes).
Feng Shaofeng - Genghis Khan
Hui Yinghong - Li Ping
Jackie Chan - Hong Qigong
Official accounts haven't confirmed (or denied) these widespread rumors, but we will likely know a lot more soon. The film is slated to be released for Spring Festival, which is the second weekend in February. No doubt there will be some promotional materials, etc. coming out in the next couple of months.
As for whether it will be released abroad - I honestly don't get why fans are always hand-wringing over whether their films will be released internationally. I find that confusing as heck.
It is safe to assume that pretty much all of their movies will be released to international audiences. It would be odd for them not to appear outside China.
Keep in mind that - alongside non-Chinese speaking international audiences who take an interest in international films - there is a huge population of Chinese people living all over the world. In my region, for example, 20% of the population are Chinese Canadians. There is a demand outside of China, for Chinese films.
Legend of the Condor Heroes is one of the most popular novels in China, and is appreciated all over the world. It's an outstanding book. I urge everyone to read it (or enjoy the audiobook). I can't overstate how good it is.
GG is also very popular, and his international fame is growing. Films stand to make more money the more screens they're seen on. It's simple math.
This film WILL be seen outside of China. Any agonizing over whether it will is a waste of one's mental health. It's going to be a big release. It will be seen far and wide. It's will probably make a lot of money. It's got a good formula, a good director, etc.
And even if it doesn't come to some countries - as with all of their projects - it will eventually end up on streaming services. You will get a chance to see it.
Edit: as I said in the comments of this post, there will always be some countries where there really won't be legal options for viewing. That's just the unfortunate reality of the situation. In those cases, there is no shame in watching a pirated version. I feel that it is better to watch their projects, thereby being able to write a review and promote the project to other people, etc. than to not watch them at all.
As long as we are supporting the film financially if there is any option to do so at all. There have been people who have bought tickets for their films in regions that they are unable to travel to, just to support the film. People can also buy tickets for other fans who cannot otherwise afford to go.
There are also often official merchandise and things like that which can be purchased from anywhere in the world.
You can also contact your favorite local streaming services and request for those projects to be made available to you. The more fans who express an interest in their films, the more likelihood a streaming service will make an effort to obtain rights.
There is no guarantee, of course, but it's worth a try. I also encourage people to be patient, because it can take a while for a movie to make it onto streaming platforms. Just because it is available in some regions and not others doesn't mean it won't eventually make it on to yours.
As long as we are supporting to the best of our ability, that's all that anyone can do.

Ok I should probably do the Harvestella thing before I get too far distant from it and forget everything. 13 Sentinels has consumed my brain over the past week, so let's do this before I lose what's left of Harvestella.
I know it got kind of mediocre reviews and a bunch of people were underwhelmed by it, but I actually thought it was pretty great. From what I've seen it failed to find the right audience, probably because the very little promotion it got made it look like a farming sim with kind of a Final Fantasy-style story tacked on, and people who expected that from it were disappointed. When it did manage to find the people who were into what it actually is (85% JRPG with like 15% farming sim layered on top) a lot of them loved it though.
It's kind of a weird game, because the farming stuff is simplified somewhat from games where that's the primary focus, and some of the RPG stuff is also not done quite as well or as in depth as in a pure RPG (mainly the combat), but if the combination works for you like it does for me it really does have a lot going for it.
I'm someone who loves the idea of farming games but can never really get into them and stick with them long term, whether it's Harvest Moon or Rune Factory or Stardew Valley or whatever else. I had the best luck with SDV, but after about 10 hours I just couldn't get myself to keep going, and most other stuff in the genre I don't even last that long. It's streamlined enough in this and has enough other stuff to balance it out that I actually enjoyed that part of the game this time though, so that was nice for a change.
The big surprise was the story and characters and world though. I played the demo almost a year ago and could tell that it was going to have Typical Final Fantasy-style Nonsense (affectionate) (not to be confused with most recent actual mainline Final Fantasy games, which for me keep turning out to be Typical Final Fantasy-style Nonsense (derogatory)), but I didn't expect it would do that stuff as well as it ultimately did.
The initial premise of the game is pretty straightforward, but the world turns out to be a lot more interesting than it seems at first as more gets revealed about it throughout the game, and there are a bunch of interesting characters who get their own storylines and develop pretty well through them too. It gets increasingly serious sci-fi story in the latter half of the game, but earlier on there are lots of fun and simple bits that establish various characters and the world and why you should care about it in the first place.
Interestingly in those earlier parts, and kind of in side quests in general, there's a lot more focus on the kinds of stuff you'd expect to see in Games for Girls™ that you don't usually see quite as much of in big RPGs. There are a whole bunch of side quests and storylines focusing on people's interpersonal relationships and families, and multiple things get resolved through getting people to actually communicate or listening to children and taking them seriously as people. I think that's kinda great and that more games should include stuff like that more.
Exploring for more materials and ingredients or to do story or side quest missions is fun and satisfying enough. I normally hate stamina systems and being time limited, but if you eat literally any food at all you get free stamina regen for a while so that's not a problem, and there are like eight billion fast travel checkpoints and various shortcuts that you can unlock all over the world, so it doesn't feel like you have to constantly redo stuff after running out of time. You just go home at the end of the day and can pick up right where you left off usually (after tending to your farm stuff in the morning, of course).
The weakest part of the game is probably the combat though. It's...fine? I guess? It's both too simple and too complex at the same time. Like there's not a lot of incentive to do anything but spam basic attacks against trash mobs, and in boss fights there's not much reason to do any more than that other than use your skills when they're off cooldown. But there are like 37 different damage types that your different attacks can deal, and different enemies are weak against different flavors, and against bosses you can get a "break" that causes them to take more damage if you use the right kind(s) against them enough.
There's potential there for something interesting, but it's terrible at telling you what type of damage you're doing or what kind you should be doing, there are way too many different kinds with no meaningful difference between them other than visual effects, and I'm not going to memorize what every stupid attack in the game does when I can't even see the little symbols on the break gauge that represent different types or remember what each one means anyway.
Also you don't get a block or a dodge (certain jobs do sort of get a dash ability, but it's not great), so a lot of the time against a lot of kinds of enemies your options are basically limited to just take damage and deal with it, which I'm gonna be honest is stupid and not fun. Yes it does incentivize you to cook food/throw stuff in the juicer and use those things to heal yourself, but it's just annoying going into the menu to use them, and it's not particularly satisfying cheesing boss fights by drinking 14 glasses of juice instead of like...actually using the combat mechanics the game provides you?
If you can get past that most other stuff is pretty enjoyable though. I liked the art style more than most of Squenix's big main games these days like what I've seen of FF16, and there's some unreasonably great music in it. Like they did not have to go this hard in 5/8 or whatever in the farming game about farming, but I'm glad they did because it's kind of amazing. Thank you Go Shiina for your excellent work.
So yeah, definitely not a game for everyone if you're not into the kinda weird combination of things it tries to do and (mostly) succeeds at, but if it is your kind of thing it's a surprisingly fun world and collection of characters and unexpectedly well done story. Like I liked the storytelling more than in probably 90% of Final Fantasy games I've played (which I know isn't saying that much because I perpetually complain about them, but still).
It's a game about running your own farm but also hope and the absence of it and what it means to be human, and I thought that was pretty neat.

She-ra (2018) Promotional Merch
As part of an ongoing project to catalogue all the merchandise produced for the 2018 She-ra reboot, this post is going to contain everything I can find that was only available as part of another purchase, promotion, or exclusive gift. None of these are available anymore outside of resale.
Sometimes you have to click photos to see full images, as many are cut off. Any [x]s will lead to the source of the images, usually secondhand listings that will eventually become defunct. I use the best photos I can find.
Con-exclusives (for sale or giveaways) are on their own post. The master post focuses on for-sale merchandise but includes descriptions for everything else. This post acts as support to that, including photos I don't have room for there.
Lootcrate:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Socks, a notebook, and a tumbler were produced, all exclusive to Lootcrate subscribers in their respective month(s). The tumbler was for March, unsure of the months for the other products.
Sonic Kids Meal Toys:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Four figures, two "straw buddies," one inflatable sword, and character profile magnet 3-packs of at least six characters (possibly more. Probably at least one more since Glimmer is missing from the BFS but I haven't seen any not included here yet).
Influencer Exclusives:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This promotional statuette was sent to family bloggers in 2019 to promote season four. It might have also been sent to reviewers in 2018. It's fragile (possibly porcelain) and very rare. Clare has taken more extensive pictures with notes on construction here. [x]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This promotional metal lunchbox was sent to influencers to promote the series in very limited quantities (not to be confused with the insulated fabric lunchbox that was for sale on Amazon). The graphics are stickers rather than directly printed on the lunchbox and it is in mini size. [x]
Recruitment Swag: Stickers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She-ra stickers promoting the Dreamworks' Career pages were given away with Dreamworks pins, likely to current or prospective employees, though when and why is currently speculative. [x]
Media Press Kits:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Media press kits were sent out to outlets. They included collectors cards (the same cards as were given out at cons, see that post for all the cards), a foam tiara (also given out cons), and buttons (guess where they were given out to the public: cons). A letter (fifth image) was also included in the box, the only completely exclusive part of the box that didn't make it to the public. [x]
A separate kit (sixth image) was sent out to celebrate International Women's Day ahead of the show's premiere, though the contents of it are believed to have been the same and only the box color differed. This was produced by Commuter Industries. Some of the recipients were those bloggers mentioned earlier. Thanks to Clare for finding it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commuter Industries produced further promotional material for IWD 2019 such as digital booklets (Clare has some pulls here). They also made an activity book & character standees for cons.
Reviewer Special Mentions:
They were not exclusive, so they're only getting a small mention, but the Super7 Catra & Adora action figures, as well as limited knee-high socks patterned after She-ra's uniform (with little red capes on the back) were sent in promotional packages to some reviewers. These socks were given out at other promotional events, though I'm currently not certain which and thus whether they were ever available to the general public. While the action figures did go for public sale, they were in very limited quantities, so it felt worth mentioning.
Absolutely Not Merch: Promotional Con Props
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three large props - a Sword of Protection, a statue of She-ra, and a prop of the Horde Throne - were created for photo ops at conventions and the company that made them has provided photos on their portfolio page. Their current location is unknown. The She-ra statue seems to be based on the same character art that the promotional statuette was made from. Also featured in these images from upper-left-to-right are Aimee Carrero (Adora's VA), Karen Fukuhara (Glimmer's VA), and of course ND Stevenson (creator/showrunner).

Do you need to be a PoC to recognize and draw attention to orientalism and racist stereotypes in published media?
There's this media series that I was looking forward to but cautious of when I saw the promotional material. Turns out I was right to be cautious. Other people have commented on it but I'm not sure if anyone specifically from the setting has. Some people are refraining from giving an opinion specifically because they're white or or another race not from the setting and don't feel like they can determine whether or not it's offensive.
--
I find it hilarious that you are asking this of me, a total WASP.
But for what it's worth, I think it's fine to be like "This seems suspect and here's why". You don't have to just agree with the very first member of the group in question that comes along either, but it's helpful to have read enough by multiple people from that group and on the general type of issue at hand to be able to know how authoritatively to speak.
Being able to spot golliwog art is one thing. "All people I think look white bellydancing are appropriating" is another.
It's easy to be a blundering white person (or majority culture person—mainland Chinese classmates, I'm looking at you) talking over others, but I don't think it's particularly valuable to opt out of ever going "Hey, this seems fucked up" and to leave it all to some numerical minority who may not feel like painting a target on their own backs either.
Like... as a white American who's fond of Native art from my country... yeah, there are Native people in fandom. Some of them even turn up on my tumblr. But how many of them are there relative to the quantity of blatantly cringeworthy Native stereotypes in American media that any fool with a particle of knowledge can spot? I'm not going to give some authoritative review of Reservation Dogs beyond saying it seems pretty good because what do I know? But I can certainly go "Wow, the 'wife killed by indians' tragic backstory in a 21stC Western? Really?"
If you want to enter these waters, you've got to be open to people showing up and going "LOL, you know nothing jon snow" and neither instantly grovel to them nor ignore that they could be right. (TBH, instantly agreeing and groveling is actually quite insulting if the person is there for real discussion of serious issues and not for clout chasing. You're not treating them as an intellectual peer worthy of being heard out but as an emblem of their identity and probably too pure to live to boot. Actual listening does not involve agreeing without thought.)
Basically, yeah, raise the issue, but be chill. Hubris and One Right Way-ism help no one in these conversations.

ASAKE - WORK OF ART REVIEW
Tumblr media
“But una know I no dey waste time” is Asake's pre-written answer to questions bordering around why his sophomore album is out barely 9 months after his scintillating debut. Not that anyone is less than thrilled to see him back so soon, mind, but we are all too familiar with the  compromises to the production process that may aid an artist to achieve these hurried release schedules. Asake, however, does not sacrifice quality on the altar of speed, so that what is traditionally a sticky point for establishing artists—the second album slump—is turned into a flamboyant, braggadocious display of his extent of pliability of his Fuji-Amapiano creation, and then some.
Doubts have persisted for nearly as long as he has been mainstream of his ability and/or willingness (or lack thereof) to explore music styles outside his patented scope, but Asake does not intend Work Of Art to be a definitive end to this conversation. So while he does push even further from the conventional in a bid to conquer sonic territory, he plants his base firmly in the music that has brought him thus far—the rhythmic familiarity of log drums and shakers, the ethereal resonance of crowd backup vocals and his own euphonic, Fuji-recalling delivery.
For “Yoga”, his 2023 opener which now closes the album, he sets himself sonically somewhere between Indigenous Egun music of Badagry, Lagos and the Sega genre of Mauritius, weaving together diverse cultures. His message here is clear; he is in his own lane and it would be pointless to try and catch him—but this time he goes for sombre self-identity over overarching superiority. Not to say he does not have some of the latter in his toolbox. On “Lonely At The Top”, the track from which this article’s opening quote was carved, he may appear to get ahead of himself—this is, afterall, only the second year since his proper breakout single, and there are others who have secured and maintained a top-flight status for much longer—but Asake’s time has always run a little faster.
That is the reason why, still struggling to find a footing in music and life in general, he announced himself “Mr Money” in his 2020 single of the same name. On Work Of Art, boastful predictions for his future can carry the extra backing of his conquests from last year, and he knows it. On “I believe”, the optimistically upbeat joint which Magicsticks reworks from Amapiano’s log drums, Asake proclaims “Nitty-gritty of ‘22, I’m the one”, casting back to a year ago when he thrilled the country with a conveyor belt of hit singles before his debut album landed the final blow. He rewords and translates this on “Awodi”, stating “2022 mo gbe wan trabaye”, another claim that can be self-promoting without being exaggerative. On this chiefly Yoruba song, his honours Pasuma both in words and in the Fuji-ogling framework the track is crafted on.
Whether Asake’s outsized self-image is primarily a function of belief in himself or trust in a higher power is debatable, but it certainly is some combination of both. He definitely has the spiritual strength to justify the latter, as he embraces, in the popular Yoruba polytheist ideology, both Christianity and Islam, and delves into African Traditional Religion when the situation requires it, when there is need to tie ese ile bo. But where Mr. Money With The Vibe regarded these religions, like most people do, as a means of covering all bases in the search for material upliftment, Work Of Art has Asake transcend beyond this and ponder on the afterlife.
He weighs in turn a Christian (“Mr. Money with the vibe ‘til the devil say my name”) and then a Muslim (“Koni wa le lai lai till we reach Al Jannah”) aftermath, but reaches a consensus in either case that he will live to the full until that moment arrives. And while these musings might seem somewhat premature for a 28 year old man in apparent robust health, Asake has never faltered in his preference of an impactful existence over a lengthy one. So today he will drown in a variety of substances from alcohol to colorado, before burying his head in the thighs of the woman he loves. “Let’s stay all night looking as the star shines/ Make love till the sunrise” he sings on the now-decadent, now-affecting “Mogbe”.
Romance flickers brightly in other corners, even if it is a rare sight on the album and is often easily contorted into lust. “Remember” has a chorus that wants to negotiate affection with money, not an uncommon love language in a country with so little of it. “I wanna love you forever, baby o/ I just want to spend all my chеddar on you”, he says at first, but what comes next unmasks his carnal intentions. “Sunshine” shares all of this blissful radiance, but, without its romantic overtones, Asake intends it to be a pat on the back to the weary soul, equal parts motivating and reassuring. “Sun’s gon’ shine on everything you do”, he says, and if those words appear familiar it is because they were borrowed from Lighthouse Family’s “Ocean Drive” of 1995, and Asake transports this iconic line across time and genre without losing any bit of its eupeptic essence.
Asake uses himself and his incredible journey, as successful people often do, as a guiding light to those still stuck on the lowest rungs of the ladder, but material success is only a small contributor to his euphoria. For Asake, the process is just as important as the result, and like every true artist he prides himself even more in the art that has brought him thus far.
“Basquiat” throws down the gauntlet with the arrogance of a man that knows it won’t be taken up, and while he is aware of similarly sounding artists that the media will try to force into comparisons with him,— “Studying me is an honour jeun lor/ I get many pages like songs of Solomon”—he will superciliously point out the futility in reading a master’s textbook to try and be better than him. “What's the chances, what's the probability/ To see a bеtter version of me with agility”, he asks on the spunky Blaisebeatz-produced “2:30”, but it is only rhetorical. He has his answer.
If he is any worried about deposition, he hardly shows it, and more importantly, he will not let it bog down his brilliant new creation. “Basquiat” is also the closest thing to a titular track on the album, whose cover art is depiction of Jean-Michel Basquiat by Nigerian artist, Ayanfe Olarinde. While Asake sees similarities between himself and the talented, troubled, visual artist, he has long established to have no greater weapon in his arsenal than his individuality and sense of self. A few fans may clamour to see him try on new trends and sounds, but Asake insists that he is the template, the “work of art” that should be studied. And he probably is right. Supreme ability and a unshaking confidence in it are always a devastating match, and his blend of indigenous cultures from fifty years ago and trendsetting house music of the future makes him one of the easiest bets for the next great Nigerian star.

if IFDB is the greatest archive for us to find interactive fiction games how come some of the games I want to review are hidden?
Specific example: Eternal written by endmaster.
HI Anon,
It is the greatest archive, because no other IF archive has recorded as much IF history within its database. It is probably the most complete you can have out there, including both information about the games, game files and source code, as well as walkthroughs and reviews. It might sometimes be the only place you will find a playable version of a game.
As for the example chosen:
If you open the page of the game, you will see a header above the game information indicating the following:
Links to this page and its ratings have been restricted, due to violations of our Code of Conduct.
And if you click on the profile of the author:
This member account has been closed.
The website have very few and very clear rules about user behaviour on their pages. Really, it is probably one of the shorter CoC I've seen out there. This includes: no harassment (on and off site), insults, trolling, posting illegal material or spam, rating and reviewing in bad faith, sockputting (multiple accounts), and bandwagoning (rounding other people to rate certain games/vote for certain user reviews).
The moderating team reserves judgement on the action to take, from deleting/hiding a rating, removing review, restricting pages. Don't follow the rules, get the boot. Don't follow the rules, get your page restricted access. It's that simple.
And don't think the moderation team takes policy breaks lightly! They will often take weeks before reaching a rational and fair decision (even for the removal of a review/rating). Pages are not hidden willy nilly, in the heat of the moment. The moderation team will investigate properly before making a decision. They have tool to check whether accounts are following the rules or not.
Do note that:
the IFDB is maintained by the IFTF, who also handles the maintenance of other IF-related spaces, like the IntFiction Forum, the IF Archive, and Twine. The service is free of use, moderated and maintained by volunteers. Donations to the IFTF ensures the sites and servers stay up.
the author you mentioned in your ask is a major actor of an IF community that has had friction with other IF communities in the past, including the IFTF (in its parts or as a whole). The IntFic community and its competitions previously welcomed that community in its events and discussions, but restricted some access when rules were broken.
As a user, you are not restricted to review or rate those games (the game pages are still available!). Only the ratings in those entries will not be recorded on the game pages, and the review will be hidden from the main page (still visible on the game page and the All News page with a warning).
Hope this clears things up a bit!
Under the cut are links and further notes related to this issue or the overall context. Warning: the first three links will contain messages with slurs.
Some potentially relevant links:
Bandwagoning in the IFDB [CYS - long]
Ban form the IntFiction Forum [CYS]
Friction with other IF Communities [CYS - long]
Intfiction Mod confirmation of Rule breaking [IntFiction]
IFDB Moderator confirmation of the raiding [IntFiction]
Campaining still used as an example for newer event [IntFiction]
Some other notes:
The IntFiction Forum has no centralised record of its history like CYS. History can be found within threads themselves. It's sometimes hard to piece things together. Some members of the IntFiction Forum had account on the CYS Forum to promote events and good relations between communities. CYS users had accounts on both the IFDB and the Forum - some have been banned/removed. On both sides, most seem dormant now. Since the IFDB incident, there seems to be little contact between the two communities. Mainly ignoring each other, as far as I can tell. CYS has a polarising history and reputation (read a few threads, it should make it obvious), with a handful of bad actors among their ranks. They have a looser moderation style compared to other IF communities and platforms. The ChooseYourStory website mainly hosts games of darker themes, which are not the the taste of many, and has a fairly active userbase both on their website and their Discord (have not been personally in the latter).

Hello bonita!!
I know you're busy but I require your career advice wisdom.
Wilhemine Arcano is perhaps the perfect stereotype of the family: an incredibly intelligent woman, who knows how to fight and always seeks wisdom and adventure. Like her parents, she has great ambitions and loves being challenged, both physically and academically. She craves to do something incredible, historic even..
With all the personal info, I leave her figure in your hands.
Love,
endlessly-cursed
*vaults over the desk* Hi there! Thank you for your patience as we replenish our reserves in terms of both nourishment and labour. Wilhemine sounds like a perfect candidate for our services and we should be happy to take her on!
As far as our services go, we will best attempt to explore manners in which Wilhemine's current skill sets may be of use, while also coinciding with atmospheres that may be in alignment with her temperament. Please note that the following list is merely meant to offer some insight into potential possibilities, and is not a concrete boundary for occupational pursuits. Yet, should Wilhemine like further consultation after this instance, or perhaps has found a good fit for herself upon review of these positions, we would be most obliged to hear of such success or more help needed!
It should be noted that there are refunds allowed, only further assistance as requested or restraining orders if not—the career ghost is obsessively insistent that all wixen be equipped with fulfilling jobs. But before the ados are in any way furthered, let's get into it.
Politics: ICW Ambassador/Delegate
For a woman interested in doing something incredible, taking on the role of an ambassador/delegate for The International Confederation of Wizards is surely a role that would require both emotional and cognitive intelligence and would be of grave importance in diplomatic matters as well as promoting relations and cultural connections between her homeland and other nations' citizens. This position may also grant her the ability to travel and be stationed in many different countries over the course of her political career.
Law: Wizarding Defense Attorney, Prosecutor, or Consultant
Whether working in the capacity as a public defender or holding a private practice as a prosecutor, Wilhemine may find fulfillment in representing wixen in a court of law and serving justice. As a magical law consultant, she could help on a local, national, or even international level on analyzing, drafting, and interpreting magical laws and regulations for her clients.
Craft/History: Magical Artifacts Restorer
A great challenge may be found in the restoration and preservation of magical artifacts that would also extend to research and documentation of the history of said enchanted objects. This work would require a meticulous and skilled wizard/witch, and she could contemplate having her own business of it, working in relations with the cursebreakers of Gringotts, or even within a museum.
Department of Mysteries Unspeakable
Satisfying an intellectual curiosity, Wilhemine may enjoy work in one of the many rooms of the Department of Mysteries, conducting research on mysterious magical phenomena. Should she find anything of importance that can be published to society, the "historic" quality of her work would be traversing the waters of uncharted magic.
Magical Philanthropy
If she's rather good with finances, championing a cause (or several) may be a good way for her to leave a legacy and support the betterment (or destruction) of wizarding society. She could establish, fund, and/or work for magical charities dedicated to various causes, organize events, and collaborate with other well-known wizards to further promote her work.
We hope that you find this information most auspicious. If you would like any further reading material leaflets on such positions, or perhaps none are to your liking, please feel free to let us know! After all, we have to start by ruling out possibilities, and maybe some are closer than others.
Kind regards,
The Magically Malted Career Services Team

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (2023)
Tumblr media
★★★★☆
Written and Directed by: Kelly Fremon Craig
Based on the Novel by: Judy Blume
I definitely read the book by Judy Blume back when I was a kid, probably around 1986 or so. Unlike other books by Blume that seemed to speak a little more directly to me (the Fudge series in particular) which I read multiple times, I only read Are You There the one time so it never quite embedded itself into my subconscious the way other books did. Which is all to say that I went into this movie knowing I'd read the source material but not sure how much of it I really remembered.
Having now seen the movie, I can say with authority that this is not the kind of review where I have any business bothering to compare and contrast the original to this adaptation. Certain bits like the chest-growing exercise mantra ("I must—I must—I must increase my bust!") were familiar and I did recall there being a lot of discussion about the main characters' first periods and other puberty-related milestones which is reflected in the screenplay. But, for example, I didn't recall the book having religion as such a core factor in the overall plot though a quick scan of the Wikipedia entry for the book indicates it was central to the novel as well.
So I can't say whether or not this film is particularly faithful to the source, but I can talk about how the movie plays as just a regular coming-of-age story set in 1970 New Jersey made in 2023. And from that perspective there is a lot of great stuff to talk about. One comparison I am comfortable making is that this feels a lot like Pixar's Turning Red from last year. In fact, I'd be shocked if Are You There God (the novel) wasn't a huge inspiration to the writers and producers of the animated film. Are You There God is obviously a lot more grounded and aimed at audiences a little bit older (Turning Red definitely Disney-fied the most overtly sexual elements of pubescence which Are You There definitely does not shy away from). But there are parallels between the friend groups the protagonists rely on, the meditation on the changing nature of relationships between mothers and their children as those daughters begin to grow up, and the awkwardness of youthful forays into romance and relationships.
Are You There God? It's Me Margaret tells the story of Margaret Simon (played with fearless gusto by Ant-Man alum Abby Ryder Fortson), who comes home from camp the summer before sixth grade and finds out her father (played affably by Benny Safdie) has been promoted and they're moving to the New Jersey suburbs before the start of school. Margaret's dad is Jewish and her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAddams, bringing an earnest but lived-in energy to the role), is a lapsed Christian whose parents ostracized her when she chose to marry a Jewish man. They've chosen to raise Margaret without a formal religion and are allowing her to choose when she's older. As such, Margaret has forged a unique relationship with God, where she has casual prayer-conversations that serve as sort of a verbal diary.
Immediately after moving into the new place, Margaret is introduced to a neighbor girl her same age, Nancy Wheeler (played with complicated mean girl perfection by Elle Graham). Nancy inducts Margaret into her tight-knit circle and they begin a club in which they talk candidly about their crushes, the size of their bras, and the status of their first periods. A lot of the second act of the film is comprised of a series of loose vignettes where Margaret and her friends try to buy sanitary napkins for the first time to practice with, or prepare for an awkward birthday party where the class plays spin-the-bottle type kissing games. Margaret visits her paternal grandmother (portrayed with force-of-nature aplomb by Kathy Bates) back in New York and asks to accompany her to Temple. She joins one her friends at a raucous southern baptist service, noting afterward that she isn't sure she feels closer to God as a result, but she sure enjoyed her time. She learns about her maternal grandparents and why she's never met them, and struggles with jealousy and mistrust among her close friends.
Eventually Barbara stumbles into a partial reconciliation with her parents, leading to a tense scene where her parents and grandparents share an uncomfortable meal together before the religion issue rears its head and forces Margaret to question whether there is value in religion at all. In the end, she adapts as best she can and the film ends on a positive note where it's clear not all of Margaret's problems are completely solved, but she's in a better space and looking forward to middle school.
The film is sweet, funny, and utterly charming. The cast is great all around and McAddams in particular does some excellent work elevating a role that could easily have been buried in the editing room but works to provide a wonderful counter-weight to Margaret's tale as it highlights they way uncertainty and indecision can have repercussions long after adolescence is through. There is one scene in particular where Margaret is asking about the grandparents she's never met. Barbara is trying to calmly and dispassionately relate the high-level version of events but it's obvious the wound she thought was so old and unserious is far more painful and present-tense than she expects. She casually swipes the tears away, tries to change the subject and downplay the impact her parent's intolerance has had. But as Margaret grows incensed on her behalf, you can see Barbara's pain begin to overwhelm her even as she's touched by her daughter's indignant rebuke of people she's never even met. It's such a real-feeling, dynamic bit of screenwriting, directing and acting.
Even bit players like Isol Young (as early bloomer and source of savage envy from Margaret and Nancy, Laura Danker), and Kate MacCluggage (as future blueprint for Nancy, Jan Wheeler) bring a little something extra to their roles. Director Kelly Fremon Craig wrings every bit of sincerity and warmth from the film's modest hour and forty-five minutes.
The complaints I have about the film are sparse and relatively minor. A few of the more emotionally intense scenes feel a little choppy (which may be the director/editor working around some young or inexperienced performances), a handful of plot threads seem a little under explored (Margaret's crush on someone other than the class stud causes her to break her own "no lying" rule but this isn't remarked upon, even when Nancy's own lies cause a rift between Margaret and Nancy, as one example). I also wondered if the old-fashioned feel of the movie (in terms of filmmaking, pacing, and direction, not setting) might make age-appropriate middle school audiences a bit restless. I suspect this film plays best for adult audiences—particularly those who grew up in the 70s and 80s pre-Internet/mobile phones—for whom I suspect this will be ridiculously nostalgic even if they hadn't read the book. But none of it sours what is otherwise a fantastic bit of filmmaking.
In the end I recommend this movie. It's exquisitely crafted and wonderfully entertaining for most audiences, though younger viewers may find the laughs a bit too spaced out and the prominence of the adult characters a bit perplexing for a movie about kids trying to grow up. But I suspect that even though I can't remember it well enough to do a thorough comparison, if you or your kid enjoyed the book, you'll have a great time with the movie as well.

PhenQ vs. Zotrim: Which Fat Burner Is Legitimate and Which Might Be a Scam?
In the vast world of weight loss supplements, it is hard to identify legit products in comparison with any possible scam. These are two very famous names that we always come across PhenQ and Zotrim. They both claim to help for weight loss and burning fat, but which one is better? Now, in this article we are going to verify the legitimacy of PhenQ and Zotrim by analyzing their ingredients list, user reviews, effectiveness. Thus helping you know more about whether they really work or just another overhyped(fraud) product.
Why is it that I have to take into account that thought. Although, "Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know.
What Is PhenQ?
What Is PhenQPhenQ is a well-known fat burner that has recently caught the attention of many people in weight loss circumstances. Billed as a 5-in-1 fat-burner, PhenQ claims to target weight loss from five different angles:
Fat Burning: Speeds up your metabolism to burn fat faster.
Aappetite Suppressant — helps to reduce hunger and potential consumption of calories.
Provides a natural Energy Boost — to Encourage an active Lifestyle.
The idea behind them is for feeling better and wellness, so perhaps it can also assist in controlling your emotional eating habits.
Key Ingredients:
α-Lacys Reset: It helps your body to enhance the metabolic rate and reduce weight.
Capsimax Powder: A blend of strongly hot ingredients that is said to promote thermogenesis or the process through which heat production leads to weight loss.
Chromium Picolinate — It helps control blood sugar levels and also manages the unhealthy cravings.
Nopal— a cactus extract which suppresses your appetite and has increased energy levels.
What Is Zotrim?
Zotrim is another fat burner that claims to be a new kind of supplement for weight control and management. Pros The product is marketed as a natural appetite control weight loss aid, containing an unusual mix of plant-based substances.
Key Ingredients:
Yerba mate: An extract coming from the leaves of a plant that will increase metabolism and help suppress your appetite.
Guarana: May increase energy and lipolysis with its caffeine content.
Damiana – A natural plant that can assist in appetite control and improve mood.
Comparative Analysis Between PhenQ and Zotrim
Ingredients and Mechanism
PhenQ uses a combination of ingredients that target fat loss from several different angles: burning fat, suppressing appetite and increasing energy. A thermogenic and metabolic-enhancing complex using its proprietary α-Lacys Reset® along with Capsimax Powder.
It is all-natural with herbal extracts as you will find in the next chapter and it falls more on appetite control, energy weight loss which we call Zotrim. Whilst Yerba Mate and Guarana can offer energy boosts and appetite suppression, Zotrim does not contain some of the more advanced fat-burning compounds such as might be found in PhenQ.
2. Effectiveness
One of the reasons why PhenQ is so popular (and quite effective) today, will be due to countless user reviews that attest to its reliability — as well as numerous clinical studies endorsing every last one of its ingredients. The pairing of α-Lacys Reset® as well as Capsimax Powder makes it a solid selection for overall fat burning.
A lot of the praise for Zotrim has come from its natural approach and solid performance on controlling appetite. While it might be good for those who prefer an herbal supplement, it may not provide as much of the same fat-burning effect that PhenQ would.
3. Safety and Side Effects
PhenQ is generally well tolerated and the vast majority of users experience no side effects from its active ingredients, although some people may notice mild stimulant type adverse reactions like jitteriness or GI issues.
Well, they are composed from natural materials so obviously side effects will be less. Although the caffeine amount from Guarana may be troubling to some people who are sensitive.
Are They Legitimate or Scams?
PhenQ has a strong user reputation, with thousands relying on its unique ingredient blend and transparency into their formula. It seems to be a valid choice for those that are seeking to have an efficient fat burning supplement.
In the weight loss world, Zotrim is also a well respected name among those looking for ways to lose excess fats without artificial chemicals. Its ingredients have strong scientifically proven validity, and they are found to be in use as traditional medicines substantiating the fact that this product is genuine.
Why is it that I have to take into account that thought. Although, "Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know.
Conclusion
Both are solid fat burners, so if you want to compare PhenQ and Zotrim we recommend that you do. Zotrim is a great alternative solution for appetite suppression however if you want complete fat burning and more advance components, PhenQ would be probably better. It all depends, yet again, on what you specifically are after — then that and any allergies or sensitivity to the ingredients.
Please note that supplements can help you in achieving your goal, but for the best result take a healthy balanced diet and do exercise daily as well. Please please PLEASE with a cherry on top check in with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen as it is important to take into consideration what other nutrients you need based upon how YOUR body functions.
