my fave thing with the 1999 fic is when arthur (and the hex) are going to finally comprehend the full horror that is a time loop staked to a person dying

like you can argue this means that drifter is immortal but is it immortality when drifter actually experiences that death and actually dies, and you as their comrade has to watch them fucking die and then in the next moment, see them perfectly fine acting like that death was no big deal bc "haha i've had worse".

and there's always a lag between drifter dying the loop restarts too, long enough for the hex to have that brief moment of doubt of wait is this death permanent-?

like, there's no winning here, is there? you either become apathetic to drifter dying, or you have to keep experiencing the horror of watching your close friend die (potentially in horrible ways considering techrot) so you dont become apathetic. its made even worse when drifter acts like its nbd.

idk i feel like there's SUCH a good bit of drama to dig into here, just from the sheer dissonance between the hex and drifter on this particular subject. drifter's been dying for centuries, they really arent fazed anymore, but theyve always died alone and in isolation.

now they die in front of their friends, and that somehow makes it a thousand times worse, bc those friends get upset and yell at them and they dont really get it bc its not permanent? they all know its not permanent? look theyre fine? was it bc they died messily? theyll try to do it more cleanly or out of sight next time but its not like they actively choose to die so they make no promises (then the hex gets increasingly frustrated that they dont get it).

anyway i just think this is a neat subject to poke at a little... also not at all a spoiler for the next chapter for the 1999 fic. nope. no siree...

Ok but how did ace even get a girlfriend in the first place? Did she confess and he just went along with it? Did he think having a girlfriend would make him seem cooler? Was it a dare or something? Cause for someone like ace to just go ghost on her and not have an actual talk, kind of makes me feel like these two were not friends before they were partners.

So then, fast forward to nrc, ace is trying so hard to lose the feelings he has for his best friend. Because that's all they are: friends, homies, if you (duece) will. Yuu has the cream of the crop to pick from, he's kind of at a disadvantage here.

Plus, whose to say their entire dynamic won't change the second they get together? He doesn't want to get bored and start to hate one of his dearest friends by proxy, so might as well just play it safe and suffer a little than take that risk and the both of you suffer a lot 🤷‍♂️.

Meanwhile yuu, who still has their old phone/mp3 player, has been playing Jenny by Studiokillers on repeat. Lying in their bed, just down horrendous for this absolute ball of boyish mischief. How dare he, honestly?

The information we get about Ace's girlfriend comes from his suitor suit vignette and he does not mention how they actually got together, just some of the things that they did and how boring Ace thought all of them were. And I agree! The way they broke up does not make it sound like they were friends before dating, though they could have been casual acquaintances. The way Ace likes to goof around makes me think he was probably pretty popular, and had a lot of those types of relationships. His description of the relationship makes me think he probably went out with her because he thought she was cute and that it would be fun to have a girlfriend, but didn't actually stop to think about who she was as a person or what dating actually means. And hey, he was in middle school. He was going to be a bit stupid about those sort of things. The experience seems to have made him think a lot about what he wants in a partner, and we know from Ortho he was telling the truth when he's forced to spell it out:

His voice lines flesh out what he wants a bit more; he says he thinks it's important to find someone you have fun with and that he wants to get married later in life. So Ace knows what he wants... he just gets really embarrassed when called out on it and refuses to talk honestly about his feelings (though he kind of does that in general hehe)

So flashing forward to NRC. Ace knows what he wants and Yuu is such a perfect fit it hurts. Best friends to lovers is a popular trope in fiction sure, but in real life? At a school? Yeah right, Ace still has to see them every day if they break up, and not to mention... I feel like Ace, Deuce, Grim, and Yuu sort of fell into their dynamic almost immediately after the mine adventure and didn't ever stop to think about it because of how natural the friendship felt. And Ace knows if things end badly he's losing the whole squad, so yeah. Better to just swallow this and stay where he is. He's still in school! He doesn't need to think about dating! He's got a housewarden to surpass, upperclassmen he admires, and a bunch of idiots to take care of. He can worry about dating later. Besides, these feelings will go away after graduation he's delusional sure of it!!!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch Ramshackle Yuu is literally in a living hell. Maybe they're a bit more emotionally mature than Ace and they just know this could work out but THEY CAN'T TELL IF HE LIKES THEM BACK BECAUSE HE KEEPS GETTING SHY AND MAKING JOKES FML!!!! But like he also lets them steal his gym shirt :ccc and he gets pouty when someone else makes an offer :ccc and really smug when Yuu says no ccc: so like maaaybe? Or maybe not and this meaningless flirting is all they'll ever have and they just. Try to be ok with it and they sort of hate themselves for it.

Thank for all the recents question! Just gonna say that I will not answer the asks about my opinion on the recent arc/chapter storyline (what is happening right now, not lore related questions/the clock keepers stuff)

I was already giving the writing "a kinda chance" with the new timeline arc because time travel stuff are really not my cup of tea and are usually really bad

But this new chapter and last arc really don't comfort me and shows that "timetravel and time related stories can only be kinda okay if it's the center of the story" and they really are proving my point once again

I don't like things enough in the storyline rn to give a real opinion that isn't just me whining about how scared I am for the future storylines and how bad I think it is because it's not finished and I don't wanna spread ""depressing"" reviews about the state of the story rn :00 it may change, but for now I will refrain to answer bc I am too focused on the fact that I think it sucks x))

After finishing In Stars and Time today and as a big fan of both Madoka Magica and Majora's mask, I think being in a loop would fix Owen Carvour.

It might not seem so at first: after the fall, he's in a really bad place mentally (who wouldn't), and being in a timeloop would probably only make it worse, especially if his actions don't have any consequences. However, if enough time passes inside of the loop ans he can't get out, he'll end up breaking, thus becoming emotionally vulnerable. Don't you want to see Owen being honest with Curt after the fall? Talk about everything he went through, the betrayal, the anger, the grief? What if he just... Gave up, and Curt saw it? What would he do, if he saw the love of his life even more shattered than in the musical itself?

You mentioning timeloops got me thinking of the idea some people have had about the mc looping back whenever they die in a noble fight, but expanding it to be: everytime the mc dies, they loop back, but so does the other time traveler, Ingo. Who has no idea what's happening or why. Just think about all the times a person can die in their first run of the game! It'd be disorienting to be involved in any kind of time travel shenanigans, but to be along for someone else's ride, without there seeming to be any rhyme or reason to why you're skipping back would be so scary. Especially if no one else seemed to notice the changes and you already had an untrustworthy memory.

Or alternate idea: everytime Ingo dies he loops back to the start of the day, but whenever he does Emmet does too. Pretty sure Emmet could figure out it has something to do with Ingo, but it'd be a scary mystery as to why. He was already worried about Ingo the entire time he was missing, but when he started periodically looping back it got even worse. Could also be combined with some sort of wound or phantom pain transfer; whatever happens to Ingo happens to Emmet. In one way, great, because at least he knows his brother is alive! In many ways, not great, because what the fuuuck

this absolute CALLED SHOT of a plot point in the timeloop fic i can't finish writing whkjwhwjkwh. ok well in that one it's not just "loop back to start of day on death," it's that hisui's trapped in a permanent loop of mmm a little over a week before the world ends, and ingo's the only person conscious of the resetting. it's all very majora's mask. and then over on the other side of the rift, emmet is, yes, ALSO trapped in the loop, and while ingo gets the visual cue of "oops, planet rolled over and died again," emmet has literally. no. fucking. idea. why this is happening, other than that it MUST have something to do with the thing that stole his brother, since that appears to him to be point where it resets to.

imagine how painful it would be to be constantly resetting to the moment just after losing him. trying over and over and over but you're always just a little bit too late. and then on the other side, since the loop starts when ingo arrives, imagine having your entire living memory be a transient and ephemeral thing. the inevitability that every single memory you form will eventually be erased from reality, and you're the only one still carrying it. after the fact of having your entire life stolen once already.

OH THAT FIRST IDEA IS ALSO REALLY GOOD. you're right the idea of just being dragged along on someone else's timeloop ride is fuuun. getting to be the passenger, remembering previous iterations but having absolutely no control over it. and especially if this is on top of oop-ingo's dissociative episodes. sometimes he skips a day, and then some other times he makes up for it by doing a day twice. or more than twice sometimes, if the protag's really stuck on a thing. that is actually so fucked up. just no correlation between your personal awareness of time and the actual apparent reality whatsoever.

oouohg and then. fuck now you've got me going. but. i feel like a hallmark of timeloop fics is the target becoming sort of blasé about their mortality or like, the experience of pain. because on the one hand, they have infinite retries so it's nbd. on the other hand, because it's so "simple" to try again, they feel like they have a moral obligation to get it right. do it better. good enough is never good enough when you can try again and again and again for perfect. all it costs is a few moments of pain and then you can save that person, shortcut those hours, be faster be smarter know better– so that's the protag's angle. that's what they're living through, being the center of it.

okok now. now imagine they make it to the highlands, or wherever, having had three regions and three nobles to get comfy with this perfectionist ruleset. except, now they're being shepherded around by ingo. and ingo remembers. and crucially they do not yet know that ingo remembers.

i think i'm imagining they ignore ingo's warning about the alpha crobat, bc, look this is the fast way, charge ahead and get killed. and before ingo can even begin to process any of that, like oh fuck or why did you just run in there or oh fuck, did that kid just die—blink. day resets. and obviously, he can't be sure, but he has to think about that connection, like. it was almost the exact same instant, those two things happened. so he's thinking, while they run the day through again. and then this time he's fast enough to snag them before they can run towards the death monster, like ABSOLUTELY NOT, and when he does they go "huh. that's new."

and he's like FUCK DO YOU MEAN, THAT'S NEW???

and then oops! cat's out of the bag! no takesies backsies protag i don't think you're getting out of this one clean. and then ingo has to deal with the sudden information that the source of his torture for the past few months or however long it's been if you're counting undone days or not, is a teenager dying over and over bc god told them to. what's he even supposed to do with that.
