Obviously the structure of an episodic series often requires characters to go from 'complete strangers' to 'close friends/family' in an unusually short amount of time. I get it.
Writers need a 'new guy' in the group to ask questions about the setting that the audience can't, but still (especially in comedy shows) want the fun dynamics that come from all the main cast knowing each other super well. It's one of those functional tropes like L-Shaped Blankets where you're required to suspend your sense of disbelief.
Having said that, I love when writers choose to take this trope and retroactively justify it by later on revealing that the Seemingly Normal Everyman Character is actually as unhinged as the rest of the group— it's just that their weirdness manifests specifically as an ability to form found family dynamics with literally any group they join, almost immediately after joining.
Like, you assumed that they just fit in so well because your group has a special vibe, but then you accidentally left them in the supermarket for like five minutes and by the time you realised and went back they were already Blood Brothers with the cashier.
Characters who are like friendly dogs in that you can put them essentially anywhere, with anyone, and they will just be like “welp! Guess this is my New Family now” and just go along with it.

DEITIES Update – 2023 ➝ 2024 New Year’s Edition
Happy New Year Everyone!
Typically I would write a formal blog post for my end-of-year update, but I'm writing something on the fly for the sake of timeliness ✨
I wish I could say I completed most of what I wanted in the year 2023, as I had several goals I thought were feasible. However, some of those goals had to be placed aside for a very sudden but fortuitous reason, that I feel worth sharing with ya'll -- which is that Iiiiiiii bought my first house! 🥹🥹🥹
(As you can imagine, this took quite a bit of my energy and time this past year, thus explaining part of my absence -- more details regarding my activity under the cut!)
---------------
From early August thru the end of December, my home-searching and closing process was incredibly long, stressful, exhausting, expensive (lmao), and time-inducing. I'm thankful to have had support from my agent, and well as my friends and family while navigating this ordeal, and I'm in the process of moving my items and services into my new home during the remainder of my apartment lease.
This home search combined with my full-time work, was a major reason why took a partial break from social media, and semi-hiatus from new art. This also affected my frequency of updating the DEITIES website and blog -- at least, on the front end. I did a lot of backend work and completed a major to-do with migrating the website and giving it a new primary domain -- so now, both deitiesofduat.com AND deitiesproject.com will redirect to the website. 👍
For the most part though, I used the 2nd half of 2023 to focus on some major life decisions, and leading into early 2024 I’m aiming to give myself a bit of a lifestyle reset. It's going to take some time to settle into this new normal, so aside from occasional media posts I'll continue to be quiet a bit longer. Once I complete some key home-owning goals and attempt to recharge, I'll aim to resume the goals I had in mind for DEITIES Project and my personal art, as well as engaging with my audience more (I miss interacting with ya'll, aha 😭).
In the meantime, thank you all for you continued patience and support! Despite being offline more-than-not this past year, I really appreciate the continue interest you all have in this project. DEITIES remains so important to me even with my shift in scope, so I'll do what I can to put iterate on it and give it all my effort when I have more bandwidth. Until then, wishing you all the very best in 2024!

Percilot Gothic Horror AU
This AU is inspired by the song below.
It all started in a modern day. Percy was invited to his friend's countryside manor for a summer vacation. Despite being there for the first time ever, the place gave Percy a nostalgic feeling the moment he stepped in. It felt like coming back home, as if he used to be there before.
On the first night, Percy had a dream of dancing in a fancy ballroom with another man. He had no idea who he was dancing with since he couldn't see the other man's face properly(it could be a masquerade ball or Percy just couldn't remember after waking up). However, he felt attracted to that man, the dancing partner in his dream. Percy was happy to be with him, at some point he almost wished that they could dance forever.
As Percy continued to stay in the manor, dreams also occurred more frequently, more vivid in details as if it actually happened. He dreamt about going to a picnic, reading a book in a study room, and taking a stroll near the manor with this mysterious man staying next to his side in every dream. But the strangest thing happened during late night when maids in the manor found Percy, still in sleepwalking state, dancing alone in the corridor.
Percy, with help from his friend, started to do some research about the place and its previous owner. Until they found an old painting collecting dust in the corner of the attic. It was a painting of a man, probably in the Victorian era.
"James…"
Somehow, this name popped up in Percy's mind when he saw the painting. And when they turned it around, there was a name written on the other side of the canvas.
It's James. James Spencer.
At this point, everyone was very much concerned about Percy's condition and decided to send him to stay at the nearest hotel. Then, on the night that was supposed to be his last night, Percy had a dream again. But this time James was also there, pleading, begging him to stay, saying that he couldn't bear the thought of losing him again.
From now on, the story continued. As Percy dug through the history of the previous owner's tragic past, unraveled secrets hiding in the manor until he discovered the truth about himself.
Or rather, the truth about his past.
(Summary : It's ghost James and human Percival. They were lovers in their past life, but for some reason James's soul was still bound to the manor, while Percival was reincarnated into the persent-day Percy.)

have you watched Lighting Up the Stars 人生大事? its a jttw-adjacent movie but not really a jttw movie in the sense that jttw is a huge motif with the mc being a swk parallel, his friends being swj and zbj parallels, and their adopted kid being a nezha parallel but otherwise not really a movie "about" jttw yknow. its free on youtube with english subs (title: [中]人生大事) so i thought id bring that to your attention :3
Well anon given my lethal weakness to dad Wukong, Li Nezha who's given a decent parental figure, and stories about genuinely sucky people who genuinely try and succeed in doing better by themselves and others yeah I'm going to have to thank you for introducing me to this film. Have to note that of course it's not perfect & that some parts seem kind of overblown, but honestly I found this work to be a really touching piece on death, grief, selfish desires and their consequences, and how we might live with joy with each other even after our loved ones are gone.
Here's a link to anyone who might want to watch it!
