well, this is going to be long, so buckle up…..

ooook so first of all let me start by saying my mom and i share a great interest in stories. another important fact is that my mom went to drama school in her late 20s and while being an actress wasn’t her career path she still has an interest in acting and when she watches stuff she always takes note of how the cast approaches their roles and their acting, often telling me about the things she notices and how the actors do well. she also has a passion for music, singing, and dancing.

now for how i got my mom to watch why r u… actually i didn’t, she was the one who came up to me and asked to watch it lmaooo

and how that happened, this story actually goes back to 2018 when i was rewatching the first season of this japanese show (good morning call) bc a 2nd season had come out. and one late afternoon/evening i was watching the show “on the big screen” aka via our projector in the living room. and my mom came home and saw a glimpse of the show was like “what are you watching” and i was like “wanna join” and since she didn’t have anything to do that evening i restarted the first season that evening, but with her this time. (funfact: we ended up binging the 2nd season in one single sitting that lasted till like 5 or 6 in the morning 😂) and while watching this show my mom noticed that the japanese had a different approach to acting and telling stories through film than what she was used to/grew up with here in the western world.

so not long after that there was a chinese show in her netflix recs and after the japanese show having sparked her interedt in asian media she started watching it out of curiosity and now chinese drama is pretty much all she’s been watching ever since 😂😂

fast forward to quarantine in 2020 and i get super into why r u after seeing a gifset on tumblr (it’s my first and only bl i’ve ever watched. the only other thai thing i’d seen before why r u is that one lesbian movie “yes or no” which i absolutely adore). anyway, my mom and i often talk about the things we’re into (i’ll mention my current obsessions to her and she’ll in turn tell me about the things that she’s into) and ofc i mentioned really having gotten into this thai show (i had also started to learn to read thai so my family really couldn’t miss my obsession lmao)

and my mom got curious about how thai media might differ from chinese media and so at some point she was like “hey let’s watch your thai show together”. and so we did (it was the week right after ep 12 had aired) 

also she made me watch a chinese drama with her in turn lmaoooo

and well, the other day she was on viki and they had added love by chance. she recognized saint on the thumbnail and so she started watching it and bc of that she’s now rewatching why r u. without me. (can you believe this woman)

and since in the tags i also mentioned getting my mom into kpop without having an interest in kpop myself i’ll tell the story too for anyone who’s curious: 

in 2017 i spent some months in italy taking italian classes and one of my closest friends from my course was this guy from south korea who is an absolute cinnamon roll of a person (and the only person from my time abroad i'm still in touch with 3 years later) and yeah, through him i got an interest for the korean culture and we had this ongoing joke that i needed to learn korean. and so a year later i was like “hey, why not learn korean for real” and started playing around on an app. 

and to get a feeling for the korean language and its sounds i ended up watching a korean variety show for some time. and there was this one kpop guy who had a really adorable personality and when i had watched the last ep with him on the show i decided to look him up bc the eps i was watching had been filmed a few years before that and i wanted to know what his personality was like outside of the show and in present time.

nina  resides  in  farrow  house  ,  and  she’s  probably  the  worst  kind  of  roommate  there  is  considering  how  type  a  she  can  be  at  times  .  her  room  (  or  side  of  the  room  i’m  not  sure  of  the  setup  )  is  relatively  organized  at  all  times  .  she’s  a  lover  of  white  ,  but  white  with  color  ,  so  she  keeps  the  tones  light  with  soft  shades  of  pink  scattered  throughout  !  she  likes  a  gold  accent  ,  and  everything  has  its  own  place  .

doesn’t  like  to  leave  her  bedroom  without  making  her  bed  or  picking  things  up  .  at  night  she  may  just  slip  out  of  her  clothes  and  go  to  bed  ,  but  she’s  definitely  going  to  pick  it  up  that  next  morning  ,  even  her  walk  of  shame  clothes  KNJFDISF  .

idol headcanon / not accepting!

( wc: 215 ) eunah auditioned for dimensions entertainment online, with a video of herself singing ‘home’ from the musical version of disney’s beauty and the beast. she sent it in on a dare from a friend, who was a big fan of dimensions soloist one and a casual fan of gal.actic. it wasn’t supposed to be serious, and eunah really didn’t expect anything to come from it, so she didn’t dance for the tape at all, but her being pretty, small, and with a serious set of pipes was enough to pique dimensions’ interests. when they expressed their interest in meeting her in person, eunah was torn, but ultimately decided it couldn’t hurt to try. by that time, she already had quite a bit of experience performing on stage in musicals, and there was a big part of eunah that was already looking for something more than school and community produced amateur theatre. she was due to perform as the lead in her high school’s production of thoroughly modern millie when she received the invitation for the in person audition, and actually used her school’s choreography for the titular song for the dance portion of her audition. the fact that she actually passed, while auditioning in such a discombobulated and theatrical way remains beyond her to this day.

( wc: 200 ) eunah trained for just under two years before debuting as 7rophy’s lead vocal. she struggled a lot during that time, and she had to spend a lot of time for the first few months there working on her korean, as she didn’t know as much as she thought she did before she moved. she was babied and heavily sheltered back at home by her parents and older sisters ever since she was born, on account of being born a month premature, so adjusting to the much tougher world of being a trainee. her struggles with weight began during this time, when her trainers encouraged her to lose weight and her fellow trainees also started to comment on it - much more maliciously than even the trainers did. eunah was never the strongest dancer, but she had the very basics of musical theatre dance and movement down, so she had to work really hard on her dancing to get it up to scratch, and unfortunately, that fact was something she used to her eating disorder’s advantage, using it to justify her weight loss to her concerned family back in seattle who were starting to ask questions whenever they video called her.

( wc: 218 ) despite it being one of the first things 7rophy is always criticized for by anti fans and the general public, eunah really appreciates having so much experience in so many different concepts. she’s an actor by heart, and enjoyed shifting into different versions of herself. granted, it’s a bittersweet kind of appreciation, since eunah wishes that their concept changes had been better received by the public, similarly to how fuse’s were. though, she does recognize that fuse were actually marketed by gold star as a concept changing group. whereas 7rophy, on the other hand, just so happened to fall into constant concept flux by ways of dimensions entertainment’s poor management. nonetheless, eunah is glad that they got to try out lots of different styles of music, and at least the constant reinvention managed to save them from disbandment if nothing else, until dimensions allowed lux to have a heavier hand in their songs. and after all of those changes in concept, eunah is also really enthusiastic about the more “self produced” image 7rophy are being marketed with now, what with lux writing the vast majority of their group releases, eunah’s participation here or there, and what she likes most of all, as most people would expect is the control eunah has been given over her own solo music.

( wc: 210 ) eunah is a very clean and polished performer. there’s always room for change and error when you’re doing any kind of live show, so it’s extra important, in her opinion, to make sure you’re as consistent as you possibly could be before it’s time to present it to the public. she has been praised for her precise way of performing by fans, who understand it’s part of the effort she’s making to execute 7rophy’s choreography as best as she can. even if she isn’t anywhere close to being the best dancer in the group, she always makes sure that she’s doing her best to try to match them. as a lead vocal, singing is where she really shines. eunah grew up doing musicals, and that particular flare for the dramatic is something she’s never lost. she doesn’t get to do it very often as a member of 7rophy, but she loves performing ballads and emotional solos. eunah is very expressive while she sings, and can easily fall into the character of a song, and usually she’s performing from that point of view, rather than from her own. even when performing her self written music, there’s a certain level of detachment there that allows her to give a fully developed performance.

( wc: 204 ) eunah is pretty poor on a lot of variety shows. at a lot of hosted shows, she finds it difficult to just relax and get on with what they’re there to do or to play along with any stupid jokes. her personality really does err more on the serious side, and she does end up get teased for that a lot on shows too. she’s known for being kind of difficult to get good responses out of, which means that a lot of her good variety show moments during her career have actually been very, very much scripted. she usually does any english speaking segments in shows, too. overall, she just comes across a little bit awkwardly. eunah ends up faring a lot better on 7rophy’s own reality shows - not that they’ve had more than one or two of them over the course of the last five years - such as to. pepe, that they filmed and produced themselves last year in partnership with kaja beauty while in san francisco. things of that ilk, short segments that are more casual, and hosting are things she’s fine with, but she wouldn’t be able to survive on a show like we got married or roommate.

( wc: 203 ) eunah’s main talent off stage and off screen that’s actually beneficial to her music career is writing lyrics. it’s definitely a more recent development, and isn’t ever something that she thought dimensions would ever let her follow up with. she only got the bravery to after seeing the success that lux’s lyrics and music brought 7rophy. it isn’t a skill that she’s intentionally been honing for a particularly long time, but she has kept a diary for almost her entire life, ever since she can remember, so she has become really quite adept at expressing herself through the written word. a lot of the lyrics in her first mini album, mezzanine, are directly lifted from either her diary or from her recurring late night thoughts. it’s therapeutic and cathartic for her to do something productive with what are mostly negative and self disparaging thoughts, so it’s a talent that she plans to continue honing. where eunah fails to communicate well aloud, she makes up for it in her diary, in her poetry and in her song lyrics. she’s proud of herself for learning to express herself one way or another, especially since it’s apparently a profitable method for her and her company too. 

send ‼ for a career goal headcanon. ( wc: 205 ) eunah would really, really like to act more. her number one priority is getting back on the boards in a theatrical sense, whether that be in a play or in a musical. her number two priority would be to make a television acting debut. that being said, after seeing the success of a-teen, she definitely wouldn’t turn down another role in a web drama either. the bottom line is that she wants to act, and she wants to be taken at least relatively seriously as an actor too. she knows that that isn’t exactly easy for an idol actor to do, but she genuinely loves the craft, so eunah is willing to keep on trying to prove herself. other than acting, eunah is currently preparing for eunah mini album number two quietly in the background of all of her other activities, so she just wants to make sure that the songs on the album are the best that they can be, and that she shows another new side to herself, or at least a shift in herself in the songs. she’s also interested in potentially writing more for 7rophy, whether that be a throwaway lyric here or there or in collaboration with lux or not.

send ♡ for a social media headcanon. ( wc: 208 ) eunah is surprisingly active on social media for someone who’s as reserved as she seemingly is. she only really actively uses instagram, and doesn’t have a twitter, private or otherwise. she posts fairly regularly, at least three or four times a week, and they’re usually selfies or otherwise pictures of herself, sometimes alone, sometimes with crys, her and lux’s cat, sometimes with other 7rophy members. occasionally she also posts part of her creative process - nothing that could be considered a spoiler, just a picture of herself at work and a few sentences about how she’s feeling about whatever she’s working on. eunah finds it easier to be sincere and talkative with fans when she can think things through and write them out. therefore, her use of instagram has been extremely beneficial in clearing up any qualms over eunah being cold or ungrateful to her fans and to the opportunities she’s been given. she kind of also uses it as a public visual companion of sorts to her private written journal. she doesn’t have the patience for scrapbooking or instant photographs or anything like that, but she does enjoy the idea of it, so she uses her instagram has an outlet for that side of her artistic interests.

send ∞ for a future (post-idol life) headcanon. ( wc: 224 ) after idol life ends for eunah, i imagine that she would continue to be active in the entertainment industry as an actor, a soloist and a songwriter. her acting career would be her primary focus, and she would like to finally establish herself as a “serious” actor, and would likely work mostly in theatre, though not exclusively. eunah would really, really have an interest in making a broadway debut one day, potentially moving between seoul and new york regularly. it’s been her dream ever since she was a little girl to be on a broadway stage, and with the experience she’s wracking up under her belt and her american citizenship, she’s pretty sure that she can make it happen. her solo music would come second to acting. i don’t think that she’d necessarily be doing the music show circuit anymore, but that she’d mostly release digital singles and albums, promoting them minimally but ... enough to see success. the goal would be that by this time, her name would precede her to an extent, so that she could really do her music stuff on her own terms. she would love to still be at least collaborating with the other members of 7rophy, and she would rather die than be separated from milk, but she doesn’t expect the group to last forever by any means.

( wc: 202 ) eunah’s taste in fashion is actually rather colourful. she likes most colours, but pink and orange shades are her favourites. she’s also a big fan of clothes that can hide her body relatively well while not being too baggy. she saves the extra baggy stuff for when she’s at home. in airports though, fans are likely to see eunah wearing comfortable, tailored cotton dresses, usually still worn slightly loose fitting on purpose, oftentimes paired with an oversized corduroy or denim jacket. other times she wears cuddly cardigans, usually in white, cream and beige shades, usually paired with high waisted pants. her preferred styles of pants are slightly ill fitting, straight leg jeans and loose, wide legged cotton pants. eunah’s airport outfits, and her outfits in general, are usually affordable. she has one or two expensive statement pieces, but she uses them to death. one example would be her marc jacobs crossbody bag. she’s had it for over three years, and it’s definitely not the height of fashion anymore, but it does the job, and has consistently shown up as part of every airport outfit eunah’s been seen in since she first bought it. eunah also often wears her glasses to the airport.

( wc: 220 ) at the moment, eunah’s public image is mostly favourable, though some people do see her as being too cold and too quiet for her own good. since embarking on her solo career over the last year, the number of people with that impression of her have dropped significantly. the idea that dimensions currently have for her is a shy, girl next door from the us, who can really turn it out on stage, someone who genuinely loves and cares about her craft and art. it’s easy enough for eunah to play into, since it’s not that far from the truth, even if she would never admit to naturally falling a little bit into the typical girl next door role. during the early days of 7rophy’s career, when they were almost nonexistent in the eyes of the public, eunah was really only known for her extremely low weight. she wasn’t even known much by name, she was just a photo and a number on a list of “skinny idols”. this, combined with the weight loss narrative that was spun around her after predebut photos and videos were uploaded to the internet, was very harmful to eunah’s body image and emotional well being, and is something she still struggles with having as part of her history as an idol to this day.

send ❂ for a voice-related (singing or rapping) headcanon. ( wc: 210 ) eunah is a comfortable mezzo soprano, and she has very good control over her head, chest and mixed voice. aside from her vocal training under dimensions, eunah was also coached in singing for musical theatre as a child. she takes care of her vocal chords as well as she can. she keeps drinking to a minimum, keeps dairy to a minimum and always warms up very, very thoroughly. she likes how her voice sounds the most when she sings in her upper range. eunah is also very comfortable experimenting with her voice, trying out pop sounds, jazz sounds and theatrical ballad sounds depending on the mood that she’s in. she never, ever likes to sacrifice technique though. keeping her voice safe is paramount to her. she’s been lucky that the lines she’s been assigned over the years in 7rophy’s songs have suited her voice well, and that she hasn’t had to strain and damage her vocal chords. when she was still just a kid, she heard about the dreaded legally blonde high notes that had to be lowered because of the damage that they supposedly did to the original elle woods’ voice, and it’s the main reason that she’s so careful with her voice. that story made her extremely paranoid.

anyway! since I covered the basics in my last post, I’ll be jumping straight into the members I didn’t discuss last time.

Past Members:

Kibum (Kim Kibum)

he doesn’t even look like the same person i’m-

Kibum was a part of the original SuJu lineup in 2005 as a vocalist. In 2006 he began acting, and slowly began focusing on his solo career more and more. He was completely absent from “Sorry, Sorry” promotions and “Bonamana” as well. He left SM and SuJu officially in 2015. He’s in Attack of the Pin Up Boys (a movie starring all 12 of the original SuJu members) as the narrator. He’s a good actor and he’s been in a movie and a drama with my wife Go Ara, so you know he’s got some talent. I personally don’t keep up with him much, so there’s not much I can offer on terms of his personality.

Hangeng/Hankyung (Han Geng)

He was the original leader of Super Junior-M until his departure in 2009. He left after filing a lawsuit claiming SM’s 13 year exclusive contracts were unfair, and also revealed that SM had refused to give him a day off in over two years, resulting in health issues. Hangeng won, but SM filed a appeal and later Hangeng and SM reached ‘mutual agreement’. He was also Heechul’s best friend and he’s a huge sweetheart, please listen to his solo stuff! He hasn’t put out music in three years now, but he has such a nice, calming voice

Super Junior-M Members:

Zhoumi (Zhou Mi)

This precious baby, my SON, is Zhoumi. I know I said before I wouldn’t talk about main or lead positions, but Zhoumi is the main vocalist of Super Junior-M and his voice is so goooooooood. He just dropped a new MV and honestly I love him so much, his solo stuff is amazing, I want to squish him He’s so close with his members and it honestly fuels me in life. He’s also the only fully Chinese member in Super Junior-M.

Henry (Henry Lau)

I honestly debated putting him here or in past members, since Henry left SM in April of 2018 and effectively left Super Junior-M. The maknae of Super Junior-M, Henry is also a undercover comedian in his own right. He’s got so many funny moment compilations I don’t know where to begin. He’s also close friends with Mark Lee from NCT. Henry is honestly one of the funniest idols I’ve ever witnessed, and his solo music is full of bops. He’s also an amazing violinist and is even the “mysterious violinist” in SuJu’s “Don’t Don” MV! Stan talent, stan Henry Lau

Members on Hiatus:

Kangin (Kim Youngwoon)

The “dad” of SuJu, he’s been on hiatus since 2016, when he committed his second DUI (the first being in 2009). He’s also had the police called on him and some say he assaulted his girlfriend, but the official report says the woman did not press charges and it was simply an argument. 

He loves his members, and he’s truly a great singer (pls give him more lines when he comes back). He’s amazing and I hope he learns his lesson and is able to return to the group soon.

Sungmin (Lee Sungmin)

The cutest not-makne around! Sungmin has been on hiatus since 2015, when he got married. When SuJu announced their plans to return, ELFs protested again his presence in the group and he issued an apology and said he wouldn’t be joining SuJu when PLAY came out. if y’all pull the same shit again i will hunt you down and throw hands. He’s honestly just so cute, this gif is ruining me as we speak

Kyuhyun (Cho Kyuhyun)

oh boy. oh no. you guys opened the floodgates. a whole can of loving kyuhyun is ready to be served. i spent forever even just looking for a gif for this

Kyuhyun, the forever maknae of SuJu. I’m pretty sure he has the voice of a Greek god, and you can quote me on that. He’s incredibly dorky and sweet and just??? His smile owns my entire heart. He is the softest man alive and his hair is so fluffy! I love it!!! He’s so cute! and evil His hiatus is set to end May 24th, 2019, when he returns from military service. He’s also earned himself the title of “ballad king”. He’s called “vicious tongue”, but he loves his members and hopefully his return from the military will convince SM to bring OT11 back together again.

A reality TV show that showcased SuJu and aired in 2017. I can’t find a reliable source that has all the episodes, but I’m sure you can find them around on YouTube with a little searching.

Yes, I am very well aware that my bias is not from my bias group, and yet I love both of them immensely. Deal with it.

Q1. What’s your favorite hair color on your bias?

My favorite is either his light brown hair for YNWA era, his lilac hair for War of Hormone era, or his black hair.

Q2. Do you consider yourself a hard stan or a soft stan of your bias group?

I’m like a medium rare stan. If this makes any sense, I’m a soft stan for them, but I’m a hard stan about them. Like when thinking about them/watching performances (for them), I’m a soft stan, but when talking about them/making sure that they’re not considered irrelevant (about them), I’m a hard stan.

Q3. Do you own any K-pop albums? If so, which one(s)? If not, what K-pop albums would you like to own?

Okay, so the list would be so long if I listed them all, so I’ll just say that I own a lot. If you’re actually interested in what I own, please feel free to message me.

I guess it depends on the song. I sometimes try to learn the Korean lyrics for my biases’ lines, so I can sing along with them, but most of the time, I just suffer (and mumble along) and then rock the English lines.

Q6. Have you ever tried learning any K-pop dance routines? Was it successful? Did you upload a dance cover anywhere?

Jinkernoodle was learning f(x)’s Four Walls and taught me the first third of the dance which I have since forgotten. I also know (sort of) the main dance routines for songs like Sorry, Sorry, Cheer Up, Abracadabra, and others. I wouldn’t say they were successful, and I haven’t uploaded any dance covers because I value my self esteem too much to do that.

Q7. List on of your favorite things about your bias’ physical appearance and one of your favorite things about their personality/mannerisms/habits:

- his boxy smile

- his ability to radiate actual warmth/make others happy without even trying

- the fact that he’s so family oriented and loves his family so dearly is so wonderful

Q8. Is there a particular member of your bias group/any K-pop group in general that you think the group couldn’t live without and why? ~ (so it doesn’t necessarily have to be the leader)

For Super Junior, I think it’s Eunhyuk because of his natural leadership skills he exhibited when Leeteuk left for the military, as well as his ability to create fun times wherever he goes. He’s just someone who really, really cares for Super Junior, and I wish others would see it more. That being said, everyone in Super Junior is very well loved (yes, even Hangeng, Kibum, Zhoumi, and Henry; fight me on this) and anyone leaving is very awful for all the members.

Q9. Can you describe your bias wrecker as best as you can without mentioning their name so we have to guess? If you’re a faithful stan, is there an idol outside of your bias group that you admire?

Bias wrecker: He plays the innocent card, but then wants to be seen as manly instead of cute. He uses his weaknesses to his advantage, but then turns around and roasts his members effortlessly. He’s not afraid to speak his mind, and his determination to succeed is commendable.

Q10. What are the three things you’d want your bias/bias group to know about you?

- for SJ, I will always support you so fucking get married. y’all are so family oriented, so follow Sungmin’s lead and find someone, dammit!

- for Tae, I love your happy boxy smiles, so I want you to put yourself first sometimes. I don’t care if you think you have a responsibility to your fans or repaying your parents, you need to think about yourself more.

- in general, I am a broke and tired college student, so if y’all could possibly, just maybe, have a concert that’s closer than a day’s drive from me, that would be more than wonderful. I live in the US where you can drive for four hours and still be in the same goddamn state, so I would appreciate it if you would not go to the same three cities every time you visit. also don’t forget about Europe. they’re waiting (not so) patiently for your arrival.

Kpop Hell: Fangirl

So I kinda wanted to start ranting about how I like certain groups and I felt like talking about being a fan and how dumb it can get is where I wanna start. this post isnt a;ll that positive but I am working on the upside portion I PROMISE! I plan to eventually make a kpop hell Youtube series but for now enjoy the posts! I wrote this on my wordpress but figured I could share it with Tumblr land! Without further a do Here it is!

Now that we got this out of the way lets talk about ALL the problems that come with being a fangirl. Its hard especially being an international fan. I have a list that I will be going through and I will try to keep them short but I am not sure that this is possible....

Subtitles: Looking for subtitles on your favorite's variety show appearances, music videos and even articles on them. It really sucks when your looking for subs one just ONE episode that you need to see to get to the next episode THAT IS ALREADY SUBTITLED. Like, why are you doin this? WHY.

Checking to see if your bias knows english: I feel like this goes along with Subtitles. If you are like me and are that extra you will attempt a Youtube search to find out if they speak English or at least understand it. Sometimes you check to see if ANYONE in your favorite group speaks English. Believe me I have done this SOOOO many times.

Fandom Culture: Now this one section is gonna be long. One thing that really urks me is the whole Label loyalty. Some fans get so blind that they say this company is bad or this one because their bias is getting alot of attention. Its starting to get better  though so  at least that is saying something. Fanwars is another thing that bothers me. If you stan two groups or 3 or how many ever then people say you aren't a true fan sometimes. That and when music awards happen..... and they are in the same category like.... like cant they all win?  Another thing is your bias not getting too much or too little screen time. Now the too much time part must have some of you throw off right? Like you WANT your bias to be recognized for all his hard work right? But what about everyone else? they all need to have some screen time. If one is only getting time eventually their label will split them up and have your bias solo. A lot of hard work goes into those albums that everyone did. You see where I am getting at? Too little screen time and people don't give them the time of day. Then when your Bias dates someone I've seen so many fan girls/boys Bully their s/o and sometimes even drop their bias because they no longer can fantasize about being with them. Like don't get me wrong when Rain got married I shed a tear but I am glad he is happy now. Everyone deserves to be happy you know what I'm sayin?

Not cool at all and you are definitly being pushy. Ya need to stop. Level 5: Complete stalking. Now when I say complete stalking I mean like you know where they live, fav place for coffee, their work schedule, who is coming and going from their place and even their private number. You guys this is considered being a Sasaeng. Being apart of Cassiopeia has opened my eyes to alot of that and I have NO respect for that. You put them in danger, invade their already zero privacy and disrespect them. Like..... girls have broken into TVXQ's dorm when they were five and took pictures of Jaejoong sleeping. Like do you know how many levels of wrong this is? Idols have to change their numbers all the time too. So just do not friends.

I’m getting stage fright.” Leaning forward, she pressed her elbow into her leg and rested her chin in the palm of her hand.

“My mood right now is Ignite! From the Sovereign album. I feel on fire, ignited.” There was a groan from behind the camera before Akali got offended and pointed at the source. “Yah! It was a good joke, don’t do that. My stylist is making fun of me!” Her jaw slacked a little before she looked down again and went back into the position she had been in a few moments ago.

“I played all the instruments on the album, though Yoda also played for the song, Imma BEAST. Everything was done by me or the people on the song. I didn’t want any help.” She blinked, before looking past the camera towards the time. “I have to go soon, but I have time for a few more questions, please submit good ones. No silly questions.” The way she blinked was like she was forcing her eyes to close tightly before she waited for a good question to pop up, not looking for ones about her love life because some people didn’t believe her.

“Ah, I wear gloves because I do not like germs. I do not want to offend you guys, but I am very uncomfortable with being touched but I want to have contact with you guys so I wear gloves all the time. Please do not touch me otherwise, most of my fans from many years ago already know this.” She balled up her fist to cough into her hand, before tilting her head to the side, waves of blonde hair falling over her shoulder. “I will do more lives, soon. If you want me to.”

“I like sheet masks, for skincare. Since I don’t sleep well or rest well, I have to take very good care of my skin to make sure I don’t break out too much. I use a lot of the animal print sheet masks, I think they are cute. I also like animal filters.” Akali had a weakness for cute things, as she nodded. “I don’t have a cough, I quit smoking a long time ago. No more cough for me, it was a one off.”

There was someone talking in the background before she nodded, beginning to untangle herself from the couch and her child like position in it. “Okay, schedules call! Was it a good first vlive? Did I talk well? I’m so bad at these, I don’t even know how to turn it off. Yah, help me.” She spoke as she fiddled with the camera, and her stylist appeared in the view, letting Akali wave to her fans a goodbye before the camera cut to black. Cueing the end of Akali’s first vlive, the fans still flooding the chat with well wishes and good lucks, telling her that they want to see her again. Also wishes for her to eat well and rest, maybe take a vacation somewhere one day.

My Kpop Experience

As I was enthusiastically following BTS’ experience at the BBMA 2018, I tried to decipher what it is actually about them? And made me think further about the Kpop culture in general. 

I was introduced to Kpop in early 2010 by my sister who’d borrow my laptop to do her SNSD (Girls Generation) dance routine. For a couple of weeks, I’d just let her do whatever it was and be amused at the same time, yeah, it was predictable that what she had done at that time nowhere near similar with what the girls doing. I couldn’t tell them apart, and be what every non-kpoper would say in the situation? “how many person there are? why do they look the same? how can you tell them apart?”. Nevertheless, the SNSD songs from their early shot to fame (Gee, Run, Wish) were sort of embedded to my brain without much struggle. 

One day, my sister was giggling during one of the videos. It turned out that she had been watching other stuff, not the dance routine. It was some show where they talk and play games (hadn’t known at that time that it was variety show). I remember the title was Intimate Note, and the main point wasn’t even the SNSD girls from before. It was a bunch of guys who were imitating them. “Whoa! there are guys too?! like those girls you’ve been watching?” My sister explained generally about the kpop culture, mind you, she was a newbie herself. These bunch of guys she had been watching was Super Junior, apparently some boyband who came from the same company as the girls. Super Junior has thirteen members, she said. WHAT? She went ahead and showed me their legendary song. Of course, sorry sorry. It was something new, but I wasn’t very much impressed at that time.

Until somehow, I came across their other song, newer song called It’s You. I went beserk. I would spend hours and hours and hours watching their video, that ONE video where they were shown the dance part, not the story ones. I would follow member by member, and repeat them again the next day. When I got tired with that video, I began to find other videos where they were guests on talk shows, variety shows, or even their own series. The snowball rolls, and from those other shows, there are other interesting guests. I have to find out about these guests, and found their music, and then their other shows. It was crazy. The rest is history. 

From Super Junior, to 2PM, Shinee, Lee Seunggi, 2AM, CNBlue, Bigbang. TVXQ (the duo), Was that all? I think it was for phase one. For some reason, I don’t enjoy dramas as much as I was invested in these comebacks and MVs, and variety shows. I watched you are beautiful, because I loved Yonghwa from his we got married days with SeoHyun and of course his CNBlue persona. I know the girls too, but I never invest time for them. I know their names, their age rank, their position in the group. My sister put up a Hangeul poster in her room, so I can read and write in Korean. 

There are two things I can not wrapped my heads into until today even after being a kpop and kculture enthusiast for 8 years. First one is the fandom culture, and the second one is the fanfic. 

The fandom culture was too much for me. Sure, I had tons of Donghae’s picture from It’s You to No Other era. Although I never really feel Ryeowook, I don’t hate him. Sure, Key was a little weird and I like Minho, but I don’t hate him. I don’t get why I should hate SNSD just because I like Super Junior. or 2PM. I love them all, why should I put down the other just because I don’t like it? For instance, since I didn’t see Boys Over Flower, I didn’t get into SS501 craze even after came across them on variety shows. I never deliberately see them to curse. I simply never pay any attention. I saw GD’s first solo, heartbreaker. It was too weird for me, sometimes I played the clip to my friend to see how things can get in Kpop. But I never hate GD. Same goes for Taeyang’s Wedding Dress, but it was just because I don’t feel the song. I love bigbang. 

Kpop wasn’t a major thing back then, and Kpop concerts in my country is a luxury. My first concert was in 2012 when SM Town came to my country (not even in my city), and at the same year, Bigbang’s Alive tour. Mind you, I don’t like crowds. I don’t like going to concerts. But it was the height of my Kpop Craze. I bought 2 tickets in each concert, for me and my sister. standing tickets, they are pricey. The last concert I went to was around 4 months after that Bigbang, a Music Bank concert. 

I was never lavished with money and in 2010 I was still in college, so going to buying album never across my mind. I went to Korea in December 2012, and I didn’t even buy an album then because my friend and I were broke from the concerts. I start buy album, only each of the representative group I like in around 2013. Never have any merch in any way. After the release of spotify in my country, I never buy album anymore. I just have subscribe to spotify. 

Sure, I stream like crazy when I want to watch it. But not because I HAVE to. When Super Junior release Sexy, free, and single, I didn’t like the song, so I didn’t listen to it. does that mean I hate super junior? NO. I love 2PM, had seen them at the music bank, but I can’t enjoy their songs other than Hands Up. I listen to other music from non groups. and put them in my playlist if they are up to my taste. View was the song that brought me back to Shinee. 

I love Bigbang. I love all their albums and songs. Their songs have always occupy my playlist. but none of that hatred. I think GD is getting weirder by the day, but that doesn’t matter much. I can’t say that I’m all objective, of course in taste and things like this, one cannot be straight objective, there are certain tugs and vibes. 

I came across BTS in their post I Need U era. The song was everywhere and captivating, so I downloaded it, put it on my playlist, didn’t even bother to find out about other thing, NOT until Dope came out. I remember it was released around the same time with GD & Top Zoro (same title in Korean) and of course I remember reading some fanwar something about it. Didn’t pay attention to it, and just enjoy them both. I didn’t even realize I was obsessed with BTS after that, all of the sudden I was excited because they were releasing teaser for Young Forever. I just realize that BTS songs also always on my playlist all this while.

I realize what those two has in common. They make their own music, and it touches well with the audience. Not just some factory made tunes. Their Lyrics matter. Of course other group also has touching songs as well, and Bang Bang Bang of Fire doesn’t really... well... but for most. They provide the matching visuals for it. 

What have I written? how did it get this long??? 

Anyways, I just want to point out that, these things, aren’t perfect. these management and artist does not JUST make music because they like it. it is business. So, I think I need to treat it like business. If I like it, and I can afford it, buy it. If not, oh well. No need hate. No need over controlling to the artist’ personal life. If one artist doesn’t show themselves much, so be it, it’s what their selling. if other artist shows a lot, okay, it can appeal to other people as well. That’s what makes it so complicated, because these management companies using their artist to sell. While artists are human being with feelings. 

I like what I’ve been buying and I will keep being this multi-artist fans like I have been all these years... It’s just so uncomfortable seeing hate here and there, over what? Why? isn’t music suppose to connect us?

Patina Doesn’t Begin to Describe the Finish on this Barn-Find 1932 Ford 5-Window Coupe

Buried Treasure. Some say both patience and persistence are virtues. That must make me a really virtuous person, since plenty of both were needed to acquire this ’32 Ford from Sam Gonzales. I first met him in late 2007, when I lived in Fresno, California. I was driving around Coarsegold—an old, small mining town about 50 miles north of Fresno—on the way to Yosemite. As usual, I was rubbernecking, being nosey as to what old cars I might find (having restored a number of them over the years). When I drove past Sam’s ranch, I noticed quite a few cool old cars sitting there.

Well, of course, I stopped to ask if any of them were for sale. It was kind of a “maybe” as to if he would sell anything, let alone for how much. I told him I was really looking for an old ’30s coupe or something. We probably talked for at least another half hour about cars, the organic tomatoes he grows, his animals, and so on, when suddenly he blurted out, “I have a coupe.”

“What, you have a coupe?” I inquired, suddenly feeling very curious. “What kind of coupe?”

“A ’32 Ford,” he proudly stated. I thought I must’ve heard him wrong, but then he asked if I’d like to see it. (Ya think?!) I followed him back to an outbuilding behind his house. Peering inside, I could see a complete, original ’50 Cadillac just inside the doorway and the front of a ’39 Chevy to the back in the dark.

When I stepped inside, there it was, tucked back between the front outside wall and the ’39, partially covered with stuff, a very dusty, full-fendered ’32 Ford five-window coupe. I couldn’t believe it. Sam was nice enough to let me look it over and even take a few pictures.

Well, in between asking if he’d be willing to let it go to a good home and not really getting a definite yes or no, he told me the history of his coupe.

Sam worked after school on neighboring farms to make the $25-a-week payments on the coupe to Baskin’s Used Cars in Fresno. This firm was owned and operated by the grandfather of well-known ’32 Ford collector and Pandragger car club member, Dick Baskin.

The coupe was originally traded in by a couple of Fresno State College students toward their purchase of a ’36 Ford. Sam bought the coupe on layaway in 1950 at the age of 17 for the grand sum of $150. While attending Washington High School in the Fresno County town of Easton, Sam added smaller headlights, Pontiac taillights, leaded in the top of the grille shell, covered the roof insert with sheetmetal and screws, and repainted the then-blue coupe brown in his auto shop class.

Sometime later it was painted red, then maybe a fourth unknown color, but it’s hard to tell. Sam replaced the original four-cylinder engine with a flathead V8 backed by a later trans. He also added ’40 Ford juice brakes and lowered the car with longer shackles and a heated front spring.

To dress it up further, he fitted a ’46 Mercury steering wheel, plus whitewall tires and chrome reverse rear wheels using the classic combination of Ford centers and wide Buick/Cadillac hoops. The Inglewood whitewall cheater slicks it wears now were added sometime around the mid-1960s.

Sam drove the coupe during and after high school, and along with some of his buddies, started the original Fresno-area Midnighters Car Club in 1953. Sam’s two younger brothers both drove the coupe to school when Sam went away for the Korean War in the mid-1950s. The coupe spent time sitting parked in and out of a barn on his father’s Fresno farm, before going to Sam’s new north Fresno home in the early 1960s. Then it finally came to rest on Sam’s Coarsegold ranch and was last registered in 1967.

At first sight, I really wanted the coupe, but Sam was pretty reluctant to let it go, mainly, I think, because it was his first car and he was still kind of attached to it. But I kept in touch, and over the next several years, Sam endured the deaths of some cherished pets, his second wife, and both of his brothers. I occasionally drove up to visit him, or to just buy some of his delicious organic tomatoes he’s so well known for.

Sam’s a really nice man and has a lot of interesting stories of his life’s experiences, so sometimes we would just sit out on his front porch and talk, without even bringing up the coupe. Sam told me about being in the Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. That’s where he met and married his first wife, Erika.

When they met, she was employed at the Porsche factory. Being fluent in both German and English, she was in charge of the mail department, working as a secretary directly with Ferdinand Porsche. Her father was employed there at the same time as a test driver. The other drivers would often take her along on some seriously fast test drives—with Ferdinand’s OK, of course.

When they married, the Porsche factory gave Sam a metal toy replica of a red 356 Speedster that he still has. Sam’s new wife loved Porsches so much, he bought her a 356 coupe a couple of years after returning back to the States in the late 1950s.

Sam has always been a car guy, and he liked to collect the old ones. He told me about going to his parents’ farm after getting back from Germany and asking his dad, “Where’s all my cars?”

Well, turns out that his dad said his mom and sister were getting tired of them being there, so when a junkman came around asking for any junk he could haul away, Sam’s dad told him, “There’s some old cars out back you can take. Just don’t touch the ’32 Ford coupe.” The junkman got Sam’s ’33 Ford coupe, ’38 Chevy sedan, ’27 Chrysler, and a few more. No wonder he was reluctant to let go of his ’32!

After I visited Sam many times, over about seven years, he finally agreed to sell his coupe. But then it took another year and a half or so until he gave me an idea of what he wanted for it. Once he did, I gave him a deposit in mid-2016, and then my brother Don and I went up and bought it a few months later.

As the current caretakers of the coupe we now call “Sammy,” our plans are to restore the wiring, engine, chassis, drivetrain, glass, wheels, and tires. We’ll also have the interior done in a period-correct tuck-’n’-roll and give the body a thorough cleaning. Our goal is to keep it as close to “as-is” condition as possible, and drive it.

Looking back on the entire experience, it wasn’t just about uncovering “coarse” buried treasure. As much I enjoyed coming across a rare barn find, and meeting a guy who appreciates a special old car, even more important was that he was willing to pass it on to me, knowing that I’ll take good care of it. That’s as good as gold.

While this rusty, dusty ’32 Ford was found in an outbuilding of a ranch in the aptly named burg of Coarsegold, California, we were able to locate a suitable barn in SoCal to capture the feel of the initial discovery. The structure, owned by Marianna Pilario (and which caretaker Gloria DeMintand graciously allowed us to use for the shoot), is actually much older, dating back to the 1890s. And it might not still be standing by the time this issue appears.

While serving in the Army in Germany, Sam met Erika and they were married in 1958, when this shot was taken with his Ford. Turns out she was a car enthusiast as well, having worked for Ferdinand Porsche as a secretary.

Even though Sam’s sister Julia was willing to pose with Sam’s coupe in 1957, she later helped her mom dispose of several cars in his collection while he was serving in the Army.

Replacing the original four-banger is a Ford 8BA flathead V8. It was bored to 3-5/16 inches and fitted with a Mercury 4-inch crank, bringing the displacement from 221 to 276 cubes. There’s an Isky cam in the flattie as well.

The carbs are Holley 94s on an Edelbrock three-pot intake. The Coleman brothers plan to clean up and rebuild everything on the powerplant and get it running again.

The exhaust headers are Belond-type center-dump.

The exhaust header on the driver side had to be tweaked a bit to make room for the steering shaft. The system includes an original ’32 Ford steering box and draglink fitted with a 1950s aftermarket steering arm.

Not much is left of the standard interior. The steering wheel’s from a ’46 Mercury and the ashtray is an old aftermarket piece, but the steering column is original.

The cushion on the bench seat was rotted out, so it was replaced with fresh foam and covered with a plaid blanket for now. Tuck-’n’-roll will follow later on.

It’s an original ’32 Ford instrument panel but missing the gauges.

Here’s what happens when you leave a car sitting idle for decades in an outbuilding: A variety of vermin take up lodging in the nooks and crannies. These nests were from mud dauber wasps.

The floorboards had to be fitted with a new wooden panels so the car could be moved around safely.

The exposed roof shows the wooden cross beams and circular block for holding the dome light.

The original cloth roof insert was replaced with a steel panel, screwed into the body.

The beam axle is a heavy ’32 unit, and the suspension was lowered by heat-treating and de-arching the springs. Other changes include ’40 Ford spindles and juice brakes.

The original late ’32 Ford rear axle also has ’40 Ford juice brakes.

The chrome reverse rear wheels are wrapped with Inglewood 820-15 cheater slicks.

The top of the grille shell was leaded to smooth it out after removing the emblem.

Taillights were replaced with ’49 Pontiac units, a common modification back in the day.

The Coleman brothers’ father was a hot rodder with a ’33 Ford three-window coupe. He was the president of a car club he and some of his friends started in 1955 called Camshafters. The club is long gone, and he passed away years ago. As a tribute to him, they put his old club plaque on the coupe.
