what is the best order to read the cassandra clare books in. idk what the series is called as a whole sorry
RELEASE ORDER, or at least something release order-adjacent. cassandra clare will try and tell you that they can be read in any order but that is a lie and will give you severe emotional whiplash.
tmi and tid were released simultaneously though, and i get maybe not wanting to read two book series at the same time, in which case i think it's preferable to read tid after the first 3 tmi books (since tmi is split into two triologies) or, if you want to avoid that at all, tid after tmi. you'll miss a few references in the 2nd tmi triology but it's perfectly doable, it's how i read tsc the first time around.
this leaves you with 2 main reading options (below the cut):
release order
novella collections & companion books are in italics, these can be skipped if you want to, or read at any point after the last main series that precedes it (eg the bane chronicles can be read at any point, as long as you read it after tmi and tid)
city of bones (the mortal instruments)
city of ashes
city of glass
clockwork angel (the infernal devices)
city of fallen angels
clockwork prince
city of lost souls
clockwork princess
city of heavenly fire
the bane chronicles
tales from the shadowhunter academy
lady midnight (the dark artifices)
lord of shadows
queen of air and darkness
the red scrolls of magic (the eldest curses)
ghosts of the shadow market
chain of gold (the last hours)
the lost book of the white
chain of iron
chain of thorns
"i don't want to read two book series at the same time" order:
city of bones
city of ashes
city of glass
clockwork angel
clockwork prince
clockwork princess
city of fallen angels
city of lost souls
city of heavenly fire
etc.

Parabatai bond  Essay... Why they may all be destined to end
Parabatai: defined by Cassandra Clare as a rare intense where a pare of warriors connect/bond in childhood and then decide to knit their souls together so that they can always stay together and always carry a piece of the other inside them. Defined by the fandom as “ a type of (supposedly) platonic marriage”. Cassandra Clare also wants to claim it as a type of bond that is unique to the shadow world, but honestly I can name several pair of Parabatai all across different media’s. Just looking at early 2000′s children's anime and Disney esqu movies we have Ash/Pikachu, Yugi Muto/the Pharaoh, Hiccup/Toothless, Woody/Buzz, etc...
... If you share my taste in these media’s you probably noticed that of the 4 other series “Parabatai” I listed 3 out of 4 (Ash and Pikachu are still partners right?) have to split off from the other due to changes of destiny/life. This is also the case for man,y many parabatai in The Shadowhunter Chronicles. Sounding off pairs that are important enough for me to care about underneath
Jonathan Shadowhunter/David the Silent: Let’s began at the beginning. Jonathan Shadowhunter was the first ever Shadowhunter. His favorite person in the world was his companion David, who wasn’t as much of a fighter as Jonathan but was very smart and very good at keeping Jonathan grounded when necessary. After being traumatized by a greater demon when fighting alone one da, David gave up fighting (and speaking), and became the first ever silent brother. The story said this broke their bond and broke Jonathan down to tears. I am sure David still loved him though. David could have chosen to go back to being a mundane but instead chose to undergo the rituals to turn himself into a silent brother. David was never that into fighting/war. Everything he did he did out of love for Johnathan. When David was no longer able to be there for Jonathan as a solider, he found a new way as a Silent Brother.
Robert Lightwood/ Michael Wayland: Parabatai and joined at the hip as teenagers. When Michael confessed to having romantic feelings towards Robert confusion as to his own feelings and fears surrounded by change drove Robert to reject Michael in a cruel and harsh way. Their bond is officially severed after the uprising when Michael die,s and Robert is exiled. Decades later Robert still regards hurting Michael as the biggest mistake in his life, the persist moment when he lost faith in himself. It is only after he confesses to his oldest child what he did and how it still haunts him all these years, only after he is finally able to acknowledge within himself the importance of the memories he has of Michael, that Robert is able to finally turn his life around for the better.
Valentine Morgenstern/ Lucian Greymark: Parabatai while studying at the academy, and for a few years afterwards. When Luke started to doubt Valentine’s plans, Valentine took him to be ambushed by a pack of feral werewolves hoping Luke would be killed instead Luke was turned. After this Valentine and Luke became bitter enemy's. These two men who once had so much love for the other, now swore to destroy any plan the other had and would fight with the intent to kill upon seeing he other. Despite all this bad blood, both still loved the memories of who the other used to be, and it is implied that a lot of their hatred for who the other is now is born from grief over they Parabatai they lost.
William Herondale/James Carstairs: CC’s closest Parabatai pair. Both Will and Jem had their whole lives shattered by demons when they were just children, and afterwards questioned at times if it was still really had much of a reason to carry on. Then they met each other and decided that they had to carry on because they loved the other to much to leave them alone. These two are in a way echo’s of Jonathan and David, and like David Jem joins the brotherhood when it is no longer possible for him to stay with Will and Tessa as a shadowhunter. They lose the bonds, but keep their love for each other. Will calls silent city on a daily basis with some excuse for needing Brother Zachariah, and Jem faithfully answers every call.
Julian Backthorn/Emma Carstairs: Fall in love, turn into Giant “true Shadowhunters”. Their bond is severed when their runes are burned off by heavenly fire coursing though their veins. By this time though their relationship had already changed from a platonic one to a romantic one.
James Herondale/ Matthew Fairchild: The two that unquestionably love each other, but do not always love the others choices. As Parabatai they try to reach out to the other and help them. But both boys deal with so much and have trouble recognizing/excepting help when it when offered. Matthew is more aware of James issues than James is of Mathews, All though by the end of Chain of Iron even Matthew is at lose to understand James. James for his part only just starts to realize how sick Matthew may be. There are a lot of theories floating around that Matthew may being to sick to function as/ protect himself as a shadowhunter. With so much to recover from will their Parabatai bond last, or are they destined to seperate?
Cordelia Carstairs/ Lucie Herondale: The will they-won’t they pair. They have planed o one day become Parabatai since they were little girls, but have never gotten around to it. They are both nearly adults now and the story already seems to be puling them in opposite direction, so a lot of people now doubt that they will even make it to the ceremony.
Jace Herondale/ Alexander Lightwood: CC’ first pair of Parabatai, and so far the only pair to keep their bond for the whole series. Like seriously even when Jace died, he came back with the bond intact and Alec reporting that he only felt a little off for a few minutes. CC’s newest reasoning behind that is that there is apparently a delay time between one parabatai dying and the bond severing, and Jace came back before his and Alec’s had time to do more than fray at the edges. So that means that our boys stayed tethered together even when Jace was on his way to the afterlife. WOW (keep this reason CC, it actually kinda works). Jace and Alec’s bond has lasted the longest, but we still have 4 more books where something bad can happen to one of them, and they are now fighting in 2 wars at once.
Clary Fairchild/ SImon Lovelace: became Parabatai in between series, after both failing as a couple, and Simon going through multiple species changes. They are still parabatai in the most recent book but, like with Jace and Alec, we still have 4 future books that could change in. Clary, Jace, and Simon are CC’s three original main characters. She claims that the plan is to wrap up the Shadowhunter Chronicles for good in The Wicked Powers. What is the likelihood that she will leave all three of her original mains alive. I mean Clary already had a vision where “a version of herself” died, and Simon was originally supposed to die in COHF, but CC’s friends begged her to let him live.
While CC claims that Parabatai are rare in her universe, what seems to actually be rare is Parabatai staying bonded throughout the pairs lives. Why is that? Well lets remember that one of the rules for Parabatai is that they must meet and be bonded during childhood, Once they become adults they are no longer eligible. A fact of growing up is that lives and people change: We make friends, we love our friends, are there for them while we can be, and yet sometimes as we grow friends part ways. People die, they move away, or just grow apart. Memories of old friends and places we all used to hang out become beloved memories of being younger. During a time in our lives when we felt more innocent and care free. A time that sadly never lasts. In conclusion to why parabatai bonds tend to break parabatai could represent the close bonds of childhood, the friends who helped you grow into an adult, and some one who you are able to treasure your memories of as an adult, even if, due to circumstance, you no longer see that person as much or at all. Value your parabatai because you don’t know how long you will actually have them

My Auto-Buy Authors
I wanted to make a quick short post about authors that I will automatically buy any books that they publish. I had seen this a little bit around bookstagram and thought I’d give it a shot.
1- Leigh Bardugo: If King of Scars is as good or better than Six of Crows/Shadow and Bone, there is a very good shot that she will be my favorite author. I have given every of her books 5 stars (the only other two authors with that achievement being Angie Thomas and Holly Black). I am currently finishing Ruin and Rising, and King of Scars is a few down on my TBR. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are #4 and #3 of my favorite books of all time. (Desperately holding out for both Six of Crows 3 and Alex Stern 2) *I have rewatched the character trailer for Shadow and Bone on Netflix far too many times- I need that show NOW!
Tumblr media
2- Karen M. McManus: My second favorite movie is The Breakfast Club, so when I saw One of Us is Lying for sale, it really could have been hit or miss. I finished it in 2 (very late) nights. Since then I’ve gotten each of her books as soon as I could, and absolutely can not wait until she interprets Ferris Bueler’s Day Off next fall. *Also One of Us is Lying is going to air on Peacock and I will be first in line to stream it.
3- Becky Albertalli: Simon vs was one of the first books that got me back into reading, with Leah on The Offbeat really drawing me back in. What if Its Us broke my heart and made me want a start dating. Yes, No, Maybe so got me thrown into politics more so than I already was. I love all of her books (I haven’t read Upside yet, but after that I’ll be caught up). She seems like such a genuine author and that trait is found in her characters. We need more books with queer characters and happy endings and for that reason I will always support her.
4- Angie Thomas: I was LATE to the game on The Hate U Give. When I say late, I mean that I didn’t read it until this summer (I know- it was always checked out of the library and hardcovers are expensive). I picked it and On the Come Up off of book outlet and oh my god was I kicking myself for waiting so long. I will be reading Concrete Rose as soon as I get the chance; straight to the top of the TBR. I would love to see her write a romance with Becky or Adam Silvera, since theyre friends in real life. Similar to Becky, we need more diverse stories and the best way to increase the number of them is to prove to publishers that readers need them too.
5- Cassandra Clare: The Shadowhunter Chronicles is my favorite series. I’ve read them all, including the short stories and spin off series. I know that some people don’t like that there are so many books, but I do. I miss the OG crew (Clary, Izzy, Simon, Jace, and Alec) but the new characters are nice too. That being said, I can’t wait for Sword Catcher to come out and hope that it is even better than TSC.
*Honorable Mentions:
-Sarah J Maas: I’ve only read Crescent City (loved it) and Catwoman, but all 4 ACOTAR books are on my night stand. I’m have 4.5 books to finish before then (I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW), but then I’ll finally start. Once I finish those I’ll get to Throne of Glass (which I do want to read, but to be honest, it likely won’t be until the middle/late summer that I get to start). I’ve heard good things and liked what I read, so I’m sure that once I read some more, its a safe bet that she’ll be one of my auto-buys
-Adam Silvera: I have read all of Adam’s books except for History is all you left me (on my night stand) and More Happy Than Not. I loved What If It’s Us, liked TBDaTE, wasn’t in love with Infinity Son, but I want to give it another shot. Odds are, if he publishes something, I’ll pick it up. I know that it will have diverse characters, but I don’t know if I’ll love it.
-Casey McQuiston: Red, White, and Royal Blue is my second favorite book of all time. It is the reason that I am taking a poli-sci minor and that in turn lead to me wanting to go to law school. It made me want to write my own queer love story (in progress- barely). However, she has only released one book. I will be picking up her sophomore novel (One Last Stop- 6/1/20) as soon as I can get my hands on it, but I can’t say that I’ll pick up everything without her repeatedly releasing books I love.
*Queer Books: I’m bi, and I worked at a bookstore for over a year. I own most of the queer books that we sold, 1) because I want books I can relate to, and 2) because I feel obligated to support those authors and those stories. That is where I end up with books like “We Contain Multitudes” and “Call Me by Your Name” on my shelves. I hated WCM. I think that it was damaging to the community, it glamorized statutory rape and abuse, it was low quality writing, (my whole review is on my blog). I got rid of it after I read it. I will likely buy a book because it has a queer storyline, but that doesn’t mean that I will keep it. I have a bunch of queer books on my tbr and my shelves that I havent gotten to, but i’ll type them out for recs: Only Mostly Devastated, Fell of Dark, Stay Gold, Late to the Party, Damaged like Us. These are all books that I haven’t gotten around to reviewing, but hopefully will eventually

So since I’m basically out of work for now I might as well make some use of it... could ya give a girl some book recs?? I’m literally so bored all day I will devour a trilogy in that time rn
You and me both pal, I’m literally in quarantine with suspected symptoms AIN’T IT FUN. So yes, of course! Burying myself in books as it is
His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust - Philip Pullman(Recommend reading HDM first, or if you start with BOD then only read La Belle Sauvage before reading HDM) Set in an alternate reality Oxford - and then further afield - where everybody has a familiar which is representative of their soul in the shape of an animal. Focussed around the character of Lyra and the way in which she is tied dramatically into the events of the world around her... easy to follow, good fantasy
The Shadowhunter Chronicles - Cassandra ClareLook, if you haven’t heard of this series you must be napping under a rock honestly... but an urban fantasy saga about a race of peoples called Shadowhunters who protect the earth from demons. Three completed series exist already - The Infernal Devices, The Mortal Instruments, and The Dark Artifices (and I’d recommend reading them in that order tbh, with the short story bindups The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy between TMI and TDA). Recently released was also the short story bindup Ghosts of the Shadow Market, and the two books The Red Scrolls of Magic and Chain of Gold, which I’d recommend reading in that order post TDA. It’s a wonderfully magic, genuinely hilarious series filled with unforgettable and wonderful characters.
Gone Series - Michael GrantIs post apocalyptic what we want right now?? Idk... but this remains one of my favourite series of all time. A world where all adults suddenly vanish for -reasons- you slowly uncover... and kids start developing superpowers... with adults gone and all tiers of power broken down, what happens? CHAOS THAT’S WHAT. I basically ate these books whole so so fast. One thing I would say - they’re followed by the Monster trilogy, a follow on trilogy. Wouldn’t recommend. You don’t need it. You only need the original 6 books.
Grishaverse - Leigh BardugoThis series became my full blown obsession last year; another fantasy series, set in a world where some people are born with special magical abilities, known as Grisha. The Grisha Trilogy follows the typical chosen one path with Alina Starkov; the Six of Crows Duology chronologically follows it and remarks upon events from the trilogy, but is with a whole different set of characters and is sort of like a high fantasy Oceans 8 Heist; the King of Scars Duology focused around two of the Grisha Trilogy characters and one of the SoC squad. These are also mad addictive books, incredibly original (and I’d recommend reading them in the order I listed them)
The Nevernight Chronicle - Jay Kristoff16-year-old Mia Corvere is seeking revenge for her murdered family, so seeks the Red Church - a school of Assassins. That’s the set up. Add in a ton more excellent writing, political intrigue, fierce characters, animal familiars in the form of shadows, and legit good LGBTQ+ rep, and that’s this series for you.
The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha ShannonIn some ways a retelling of the mythological folk tale of St George and the Dragon; seeks inspiration from both Western and Eastern mythological representations of dragons... where dragons are monsters in one side of the world, and allies in another. This is a story which throws you in the deep end immediately and just sort of expects you to grab hold, but hang in there. The initial hundred pages are a mindfuck, and then it is impossible to put down.
Throne of Glass series - Sarah J MaasA world of humans and fae, magic and mortal; stories filled with assassins, swords, political intrigue, alliances, heartbreak, love, pirates, adventure, and dragons. Look, people shit on Sarah J Maas and some of that is totally valid but I won’t apologise for how invested I am in these books. And I really really need to finish this series and now I have the time to YAY
The Poppy War and The Dragon Republic - R F KuangInspired by real Chinese history, this series (final book in the trilogy publishing this year, so this is the perfect time to binge these ready for that) is a military high fantasy inspired by events in China, Japan, and Taiwan, and underpinned by both Chinese history and mythology. Also opium. And gods (quote Rebecca Kuang) dropping acid. These books have you practically ripping the pages to get to the next bit they’re so well written and did I mention the author is 23
Books I’m reading at the moment/getting to ASAP while in quarantine so can’t say what they’re about but just a taste anyway: The Mistborn Trilogy - Brandon SandersonNinth House - Leigh BardugoThe Farseer Trilogy - Robin HobbRed Rising Trilogy - Pierce BrownA Discovery of Witches Trilogy - Deborah HarknessThe Dark Vault - V E SchwabPlus continuing my re-read of The Shadowhunter Chronicles because I am trash for that series always
HOPE THAT HELPED ANON

Top Fantasy Series #1
My top fantasy series’ from my life as a reader, so far...
1. Tolkien’s Middle Earth
I first tried reading the Hobbit at six years old. I didn’t finish it. I am APPALLED at six year old me!! As a massive reader being able to pick one absolute favourite book is a big deal, and The Hobbit is that book for me. I’ve read it a million times and I still love it. I’ve read the Silmarillion about twice and the Lord of the Rings twice, right through. (I first read LOTR at twelve. I guess that redeems six year old me. *glares at her* ) As a reader and as a writer, Tolkien has had a massive impact on me, and I am positive it is his works that have made me a fantasy reader and a fantasy writer.
2. Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts
I am a fully-fledged member of Generation Potter. Growing up on these, the exciting releases, the hype, the pure magic... For a long time I was baffled as to why I never ranked this series as my Number One.
3. Discworld and everything else Terry Pratchett
My heart is in Discworld. And the fact that this is Number Three says nothing about how important Discworld is to me and everything about how big the first two entries in this list must be to push Discworld to third.
4. Septimus Heap and the Pathfinder trilogy by Angie Sage
I didn’t read these until my early twenties, but the magic still caught me. I love the old feel of the kingdom and the world. I ADORE Aunt Zelda and the Boggart, and I would do anything for a Dragon Boat! These are so worth reading and I cannot sing their praises highly enough.
5. The Old Kingdom by Garth Nix
This was recommended to me by a good friend and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t read it. The whole series is amazing and the world is fantastic. I love Lirael the most (the character and the book) and I have a soft spot for Moggett. Clariel is also superb.
6. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
I love anything Philip Pullman, if I’m honest, but the Lyra books are magical. I grew up on these, as well as the Sally Lockhart books.
7. Mortal Engines and Fever Crumb by Philip Reeve
I would throw anything Philip Reeve in here actually, but I have yet to read a few of his series’, so we’ll stick with the two series’ about the cities. I guess most people wouldn’t call it fantasy, but I do.
8. The Shadowhunter books by Cassandra Clare
Again, a lot of people would call this paranormal romance or urban fantasy, but those weren’t a thing (or at least, not to my knowledge when I started devouring fantasy novels), so on my fantasy list it goes. I particularly adore The Infernal Devices trilogy. I’m not such a fan of the fourth, fifth and sixth books of The Mortal Instruments and kind of wish that had been a trilogy. I LOVE Shadowhunters Academy and The Magnus Bane Chronicles. I’ve even read the Codex. The Dark Artifices is amazing too, although I haven’t read the last one yet. I love the different feel of that series.
9. The Dwarves by Markus Heitz
I’ve only read the first one so far, and recently at that, but it was incredible. I was hooked and I’m desperate for the second one. For chunky books in an epic fantasy style, they are suspenseful, easy to read and hard to put down.
10. Trudi Canavan
Basically anything by her; her work is so easy to read and so immersive. Her Magicians books are fantastic. If you love fantasy and you haven’t read them yet, you definitely need to mend that!

Sooo... I don't know how much sense this is gonna make to you but I always thought that if the show would create it's own storylines and losely based on the books (so that it did not want to same results with the different paths they taken) it could been something more interesting. So what I mean is for example when they killed off Jocelyn they could have "fixed it" with their own, unique storyline. (It might be stupid but it's just one idea and it couldn't solve the damage they made) 1/many?
2/4 By not killing off Jace (since Lilith could easily possess him I mean Alec and Izzy both got possesed by a greater demon and Lilith is the mother of all demons..) so when Clary makes the wish, she makes her mother come back. I don’t know why but I would find that more interesting as a twist that she would be linked to Jonathan and by that time she would understand her son more and maybe even in the end kind of save him? 2/many?
3/4 I mean for me show!Jonathan/Sebastian is more human(Like I almost want to protect him? He did terrible things yes, but nothing really unredeemable?). What did he do really there? He was just a lost boy who was sent to hell to suffer after his whole life was all about suffering. He killed a few shadowhunters, he killed Dot (and no one really cared about her so I guess it’s okay? Did anyone mourn her at all? I don’t think so.) 3/many
4/4 But I guess this show was never something the writers really cared about. I’m pretty sure all the action, all the plot stuff will only happen around the 18th episode maybe? By that time we will be bored to death with awful filler episodes. When if they wanted to make it different or in their eyes better.. There was a lot of opportunity. And they constantly failed. And who knows maybe the last two episodes will have more action than the whole season 3 before that. // last of many ♥
Not to worry. You made plenty of sense. One of the many weaknesses in the show’s writing is the fact that they keep on trying to follow the source material while still trying to tell their own story and I think that contributes a lot to how messy this show’s story is. The fact that they’re trying to follow the source material but also want to make their own story at the same time. They keep on trying to have it both ways and while there are certain stories you can do that with…The Shadowhunters Chronicles is not a good book series to take that approach with. Cassandra Clare’s writing format is heavily based on what I call a “chain reaction” format. Meaning, her stories and the tools she uses within the story (whether it be character, plot or world-building) are extremely close-knit, everything affects everything else, the story devices are all inter-woven together. Everything leads into something else. So it’s not as simple as making a change and then being able to continue on with her source material afterwards because the entire foundation of her story is so closely inter-woven that whatever you change causes a chain reaction of things that also need to change. And the writers for the show have proven that they don’t understand that. TVD failed in a lot of things but I did enjoy how it wasn’t afraid to deviate and still managed to tell their own somewhat cohesive story that had its fair share of memorable characters that made you feel things whether for the good or the worst.
And I also really love your Jocelyn idea. It’s always bugged me that Clary used the wish to bring back Jace, a guy she wasn’t all that close with to begin with and had only known for a month, two months tops. It would’ve made far more sense for it to be Jocelyn. And just imagine all the interesting conversations we could’ve had between Jocelyn and Lillith. The Woman Who Birthed Jonathon vs the Woman Who Raised Jonathon. That would be such a fun clash. And ultimately it all tying into Jocelyn getting to know her son and the resolution could be she and Jonathon riding off into the sunset and raising Jonathon to be the person he was meant to be. There could be a tearful good-bye with Clary in which Clary doesn’t want her mother to go, that the reason she brought Jocelyn back was she still needed her mother and Jocelyn can tell her, “Perhaps you did once, but that’s not the case anymore. The truth is you haven’t needed me for a very long time but your brother does need me and I’m going to give him what I should’ve given him all along. This is my redemption.”
And you’re absolutely right. While Jonathon has done some pretty bad things, in conjunction with how it relates to the other characters, it’s nothing that’s irredeemable. And I actually forgot that he killed Dot. That’s how forgettable she is. In fact, I don’t even think Clary mourned her and if the pilot episode was anything to go off of, those two were supposed to have been as close as sisters. In season one, Dot blew off the chance to escape Valentine in order to search for and protect Clary and what did Clary do for Dot? Well, she leaves Dot on Valentine’s ship, the next time she sees Dot, she treats Dot as if Dot were the enemy, and when Dot dies, I don’t think a single tear was shed. Are we sure Clary isn’t the villain of this story? Show!Jonathon actually has some really interesting qualities about him that I find quite intriguing that I never really saw in the books so I’m like, “Yes, show, keep on this thread” and then they throw the creepy incest thing our way to further demonize him and I’m just like, “Why???” Like I really loved the moment when Jonathon is telling the story about how he met the original Sebastian Verlac and how touched he was by the beauty inside and out Sebastian exhibited. To think that after years of being trapped in a hell dimension, coming out, and that’s his first interaction in the world? A beautiful boy offering him his jacket? But the show is going hard-core down this incest route because you know, Jonathon is evil, why wouldn’t he be attracted to his sister? I still maintain that it would be far more interesting, since they’re doing this whole role swap with Clary and Jace (in the books, it was Jace with the bond) that instead of Jonathon being obsessed with Clary, he’s actually super obsessed with Jace. If you’re going to do a role swap, you might as well go all the way, right? And considering the physical similarities behind Jace and the real Sebastian, it could track.
This entire season feels like it’s going to be nothing but filler. I watched 3x14 earlier today and I swear I must’ve fast forwarded like half the episode because I was so bored. The show has so much plot they have to get through but they keep on having episodes full of inconsequential moments that in the long run were a complete waste of time. Everything is probably going to be jam packed in the final couple of episodes and character arcs and relationships are all going to be rushed to an ending point that won’t feel organic. It truly is a shame how disappointing this show is because it could’ve been amazing. It truly boggles my mind how they can make a show that has so much plot squeezed in but it takes a million-and-one years for anything to happen.

TDA asks!
I was tagged by @forget-me-not-james-hrndle, the sweetest pal you will ever have the pleasure of knowing! Thanks so much for thinking of me, Deena❤️
1. Are you excited for the TID TV show? Why or why not?
Hmmm I’m just going to be diplomatic and say that I’m looking forward to seeing how it will play it out, but if they make one wrong move with it, I might die.
2. What’s your favorite quote from tsc:
“We fear things because we value them. We fear losing people because we love them. We fear dying because we value being alive. Don’t wish you didn’t fear anything. All that would mean is that you didn’t feel anything.” - Julian Blackthorn, Lord of Shadows
3. Which character is most like you and why? (Physical appearance or personality)
I relate so insanely much to Emma, which is probably why I’ve gotten so attached to her and the series. We have generally similar looks: light hair, brown eyes; though I must admit I am not nearly as beautiful! But most of all we have eerily identical personalities and we both are hopelessly in love with Julian Blackthorn so there’s that.
4. Any theories on what will happen in Queen of Air and Darkness?
No one I love dies, Zara and her racist pals are imprisoned indefinitely, Julian finally takes a nap, and Julian and Emma live happily ever after.
God I wish. But in all seriousness, I loooove the theories that the parabatai curse isn’t actually a curse but will eventually turn Julian and Emma into angels. But that’s mostly wishful thinking.
5. Any theories on The Wicked Powers?
Okay so I’m hella excited for TWP, but since it’s such a long wait, I try not to read too many theories because I’m hype enough as it is. I’m just lit that Dru will have a bigger role and that Kit will be there, because Ive absolutely adored him since we got to know him a little better in Lord of Shadows. I do have a feeling though that the clave and the shadowhunter government structures are going to be in complete shambles by the end of QoAAD. So, I’m thinking there is going to be a lot of repair going on in TWP, and hopefully a less authoritarian structure will arise and maybe the Blackthorns can be a part of making that happen. Lex malla, no malla!
6. If you were going to get a shadowhunter chronicles tattoo, what would you get?
I don’t see myself getting a tattoo, mostly because I’m scared of commitment, but if I did I’d like one of the runes. Maybe prosperity, strength, or loyalty. Something with a positive meaning!
7. Shadowhunters tv show fan or not?
I watched the first season and I have to admit I am not the biggest fan. I don’t like how it deviated from the series and portrayed some of my favorite TMI characters (though in complete honesty, I am definitely in love with Matthew Daddario.) But I certainly don’t look down upon people who do like the show! I think it’s important to respect what makes other people happy!
8. How long have you been a fan of CC’s books and have you been in the Tumblr fandom as long as you’ve been a fan?
I read the first couple of TMI books in 8th grade, as a recommendation from one of my friends. I was really fascinated by it and stayed up all night reading them, but at the same time I was slightly weirded out by the incest and demon stuff. I picked them up again in 10th grade, and read all 5? TMI books in less than a week and got so into them. Since then, I’ve read the other TSC books, which I enjoyed even more! I’ve been browsing the TSC tumblr posts pretty much since I started reading them, but I didn’t actually start my own blog until earlier this summer.
9. Favorite ship, brotp, and notp:
-Favorite ship: Jemma Blackstairs (though I’m sure y’all have figured that out by now)
-Brotp: Kieran and Julian! I actually think they’d be really great friends for eachother if not for their circumstances.
-Notp: Sebastian and Clary. Seriously guys, I try not to be judgement but this was wrong on so many levels. First and foremost, he tried to rape her. Need I say more?
10. Which characters do you think are underapppreciated and why?
Julian gets some serious hate but honestly everything potentially morally gray that he has done has been done out of love and kindness, for the protection of his family. He’s been through so much and yeah maybe he doesn’t always make the right choices, but when do any of us?
11. Three things you associate with/ love about your favorite season:
I love winter time, though I might not have the same opinion if I didn’t live in such a hot and humid climate! But I love warm spices (allspice, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves), Christmas trees and lights, and chilly air!
12. What’s your Hogwarts house, Ilvermony House, and Patronus?
Gryffindor/Thunderbird/Crow
13. What’s your favorite song, lyrics, or band/singer:
I adore Tom Odell. Literally everyone of his songs, but particularly Hold Me, Magnetized, If you Wanna Love Somebody, Long Way Down, Here I Am. Please check him out and talk to me about how great he is!
14. If you’re in high school and you want to go to uni, what do you want to study?
I am thinking that I want to study architecture! I’ll be applying to colleges this fall, so if someone rich out there is reading this: please send money for school I’m so broke.
15. Coffee, tea, water, or soda:
The only thing I drink on a regular basis is water but I have tea quite often too!
16. What’s your favorite mythical creature?
Hmm centaur maybe? I like Chiron from Percy Jackson and Firenze from Harry Potter!
17. What tv show/ movie do you refuse to watch?
I tried so hard to like Riverdale since everyone is obsessed with it (I watched 2 whole seasons) but it’s not my thing and I stopped watching.
18. What could you do a 40 minute presentation on with no presentation:
Any of Donna Tartt’s books, my cat, The Dark Artifices, and any social political issue.
19. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you move to:
The UK, Belgium, Stockholm, or Helsinki. Basically anywhere in Northern Europe that will take me.
20. What dumb accomplishment are you proud of:
As of now, I have a 4.0 GPA; also I have solved a rubix cube!
21. What’s your name:
Katie! But you can call me whatever you like!
So I am officially tagging: the person reading this, @booksandmentalbreakdowns, @daisyrose97, @blxckburn, @halzleeforever ,@pancakegoddess, and @sockmonstergotstyle
Please don’t feel like you have to do this if I tag you, just know I’m thinking of you! ❤️❤️❤️

lemon, prussian azure, oxide of chromium, violet rose and mars brown for the ask game :))
send me a watercolour ask!
thanks rina for the qs! will answer the rest under the cut <3 the book question is to blame imo
lemon; what’s your comfort food?
m-mashed potatoes... (with some butter and a dash of salt and pepper! also, throwing some croutons ontop for some crunch. yes i realise how weird this all is.) also, a good bowl of pho?? and rice with... thit kho... google is saying its called braise pork belly and (boiled) eggs. when we were younger, my grandma made it a certain way (she cuts the pork and eggs up really small and mixes it in with the rice and adds a bit of the ??? the broth water thing so that its not dry. it was so good and to this day there is no better way to eat thit kho for me, even though i realise that's a very childish way to eat it. super good if you have a sore throat though). also recently, zambreros' burrito bowl. haven't had it too often but i just know it would make me feel better.
prussian azure; what’s your favorite scent?
the chloe eu de parfum?? marc jacob's daisy love eu so sweet??? those are at the top of my head bc i sprayed them for someone at work lol // warm coffee on a cold day. why do i suddenly feel like i havent smelt anything for the last year?? nothing comes to mind. oh! you know when the days are like.. super nice and the air both doesnt smell but it has a really fresh smell too? that makes no sense. OH AND AND AND!!!! i think it's// night jasmine? and/or white camelias???? i forgot what they're called and i cant grab my book rn but i think we have both at home and they both smell really gOOD
oxide of chromium; what’s your favorite book?
i don't like that this question is singular so i will pretend it gave the option of answering with more than one book.
on earth we're briefly gorgeous by ocean vuong // his way with words is.. just.. woah. you sit there thinking, 'i wonder where this metaphor/analogy is going', and then suddenly it makes perfect sense and you're so blown away you feel like you've ascended time and space. also, lots of relatability in there (it's an autobiography)
the infernal devices trilogy and the last hours trilogy by cassandra clare // to be honest i love all the characters and the entirity of the shadowhunter chronicles (i know that it's not 'the best' series out there but hey to each their own. i fully recognise and agree with a lot of the things people don't like about these books though) i may be highly biased towards these two trilogies because they take place in the late 1800s/early 1900s respectiveley.. so the aesthetics of it all??? also, god the characters, i could go on about them and each individual character relationship/dynamic for ages (this applies to the greater majority of the shadowhutner characters oops)
and honorary mentions but also i love them just as much, i just wont type a whole paragraph again: the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky // a dark and hollow star by ashley shuttleworth // dark rise by c.s.pacat. AND THE PERCY JAKCSON/HEROES OF OLYMPUS SREIES OH MY GOD how could i forget them like this
violet rose; what does your dream house look like?
hm. this is a really hard one to think about for personal reasons lol but i really want to live in a unit/flat/apartment etc as opposed to.. a standalone house? not sure why. i would have a room for books!! not a library, but one thats primarily books. and one for the piano (electric piano, if im $$$ AHHA) and i wouldn't need a massive kitchen but an extended counter or an island would be nice.. um. yeah i'm not too descriptive for this one, sorry.
mars brown; what’s a movie that always puts a smile on your face/makes you laugh?
any barbie movie NCDKNCJDK they're uh kinda comfort movies lol so they can always put a smile on my face. i'm lying if i say i don't rewatch a lot of movies, i just can't think of any right now that fit this question??

Bookish Asks! All of them!!! (This is becoming a trend)
Yaaaaay! Once again, thank you Joseph! xx
Spine: What is your favourite genre to read?
Gothic Genre!
Comma: Who is your favourite character…. ever!?
Its gotta be Magnus Bane from the Shadowhunter Chronicles!
Page: How do you get out of a book slump?
I usually just have to abandon the book I’m currently reading and then start again with something i really really want to read
Library: What is one book that changed your views on a topic?
Oooh that’s a tricky one. I’m not sure if it necessarily changed my views, but “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote really made me think about how i view criminals and the death penalty (I mean I still don’t support it, and they definitely deserved what they got, but I found it very interesting)
Words: What book made you love reading?
I’d always loved reading but Ingo but Helen Dunmore was the first book that I remember not being able to put down and sparked me going through a book a week from our school library when I was 12
Typewriter: Have you ever cried over a book?
Yes, both times were from Cassandra Clare books! The first time was the final book in the Infernal Devices Trilogy, that prologue was heartbreaking. And the second time was the final book in the Mortal Instruments Series. I remember I started crying over it at 7:30pm and then I thought “If I’m gonna be crying like this I’ve just got to finish it tonight” so I was crying for a good 3 more hours after that, I was a mess! That series meant so much to me. I even went through a mourning period afterwards, it took me forever to get back into reading after that.
Letter: Who is your character crush?
Oh my god, how do I choose? Well I was defo in love with Cam from the Fallen series, I mean, I think that was the only book I’ve read were I preferred the guy that didn’t get the girl. He was just so dark and mysterious (cliche I know), so much more interesting than Daniel. Also Levi from Fangirl is literally my ideal guy, tall, awkward, cute, probs one of the few books that had a more realistic love interest. Also Mannon from the Throne of Glass series. Shes so sexy and powerful I’d probs have an anime nosebleed if I met her.
OH NO I’M FORGETTING MY ULTIMATE BOOK CRUSH
Ireil from the Ink Exchange! Don’t ask why, coz I bet if I reread that book I would be disgusted by how much I was in love with him coz I’m pretty sure he was abusive or something. But 12 year old me was in love with him. Even though I prefer nice guys in real life (or at least i like them thinking they’re nice guys at first haha), evil book boyfriends were defo my thing
NO WAIT WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT! JEM. JEM CARSTAIRS. INFERNAL DEVICES. YEAH, THAT’S MY BOY, THATS MY DREAM BOY.
Spelling: If you could be put into any universe, which would it be?
Hmmmmm to live my gothic dream and live in Wuthering Heights or to be a shadowhunter….Actually you know what if I was in the shadowhunter universe I would be a warlock and just do my own thing like Ragnor Fell, that way I can be lazy and not die, and just have fun changing my how decor any time I wanted!
Bookstore: If you had a character written based on you, what would their personality and name be?
Urrr they would be called Rebecca and have my personality????
Grammar: What is the shortest period of time it has taken you to read a novel?
2 days?
Scroll: What is your favourite weather to read in?
It has to be either sunny so I can read outside or a rainy evening so I can curl up in bed or by the fire
Printer: Why do you read?
Coz I like reading?
Paperback: Strangest place you have read a book?
I can’t think of anything “Strange” but I guess my capsule at a capsule hotel in Tokyo is kinda cool?
Hardcover: Least favourite book and why?
True History of the Kelly Gang, most awful reading experience of my life and I had to read it for school so I had to force myself. The whole book was written in old Australian slang, with no grammar, it was so long, and even if I read the chapter before the lesson I would still have no idea what was going on, it made no sense. I even watched the film and it made no sense!  I completely bullshitted the exam for it.
Bestseller: Who is your favourite author?
Cassandra Clare, I will be following that woman’s career for the rest of my life I’m pretty sure
Binding: If you could give any book to a loved one, what would it be and why?
But that all depends on the person? I mean I guess either the shadowhunter books because they were such a huge part of my life or Jane Eyre coz that book really affected me, like you know when you read a book and now you have a before and after timeline in your head of your reading experience? No? Does that make sense? Anyway Jane Eyre is awesome!
Chapter: Do you think reading is for everyone?
I usually believe the reason lots of people don’t like reading is because they’ve never found the right book for them. “I don’t like reading” sounds like “I don’t like films” it just seems really odd to me. But I guess it’s probably more complicated than that…
Blurb: How many books are you reading right now?
You’re asking this at a very rare time where I’m reading a million books at once! Haha! I usually never do this because I end up forgetting about them all but at the moment there are 4 that I am actively reading and 3 that I have paused reading. 7 in total
Cliffhanger: What book(s) are you reading currently?
*cracks knuckles* right let’s get into this!
So books I am actively reading:
Hamilton: The Revolution: Been reading since September, gonna try to finish it by April when I go see it!
The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Started at christmas, need to read it for University by March I think
The Samurai: Started reading it to make me feel like I was doing revision during exam period, but my History of Japan exam is done now so I’ve paused reading it for a bit
Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy: Was not having a great time last week so thought nonfiction books weren’t cutting it in terms of keeping my mind occupied/comfort reading as it were, so I decided it was finally time to read this book (It’s been sitting on my shelf for over 2 years) and omg it’s so nice to be reading about Simon again! Literally picking up a shadowhunter book is like coming home and being with old friends.
And then the books that are on pause are just short story collections that I pick up whenever I feel like it:
Murders in the Rue Morgue and Other Tales by Edgar Allan Poe
H.P. Lovecraft The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories
New Penguin Parallel Text Short Stories In Japanese
Cover: Recommend a book for me?
Ohhhh Joseph *rubs hands together* if your reading tastes haven’t changed and you still like stuff like Cassandra Clare then go read the Throne of Glass series by Sarah. J. Maas they are so addictive and the characters are so good, and the main heroine is so badass it’s unbelievable, it’s got a really cool fantasy world too!
Prologue: Describe the book you are currently reading using only emojis?
Damn it I’m writing this on my computer
Epilogue: If you could rename any book, what would it be?
Urrrr, True History of the Kelley Gang should be changed to “Confused Ramblings of OldMan Kelley”
Title: What character would be your BFF?
The fact that it says “What” and not “which” confuses me. Does it mean “What kind” or “What specific”. Hmmmm I like to think i’d be friends with Magnus Bane because we both have crazy fashion styles, but maybe he’s too cool for me. I’d love to best friends with Jane Eyre, probs be good friends with Simon Lewis.
Thanks @wilde-heir! Can I tag you to do Cover and Cliffhanger? Pretty please? Xx

READING DECATHLON 2016
First of all, I would just like to thank Epic Reads for creating this challenge. You’re probably not going to read this, but if somehow you do, I thank you wholeheartedly for helping me increase my self-esteem just a smidge, and for helping me reduce the amount of unread books on my shelf before going back to college.
In September, Epic Reads posted a blog on its website, announcing what they called the Reading Decathlon, and the basic rule is that you have to read 10 books in 10 days (in other words, read one book a day for 10 days).
To be honest, I didn’t know if I could do this. I tried reading 7 books in 7 days and I failed that. How am I suppose to read TEN books in TEN days?!
I did try, though, and oh my goodness was it so worth it.
There were only a few days left until college started and I still had a pile of books that were unread. I had 3 months to read all of them, but apparently I had bought too much and so I was left with more books than I had counted. And then something miraculous happened. I opened the Epic Reads website and there it was: the announcement for the Reading Decathlon. I read it, and then I immediately got in on it.
There were other options. I didn’t only have to read 10 full-length novels to win this decathlon. There were the options of Reading for Silver and Reading for Bronze. But I wanted Reading for Gold. Not only am I competitive, but I also didn’t have any e-books or audiobooks to be read so I stuck with Gold.
How did I manage to pull it off, you ask, despite my previous trepidation? Well, to be frank, I have absolutely no idea. Some of the books in the pile were very huge and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do finish every single one of them. But I did, and oh wow how exciting that moment of realization was. The moment when I read the final page of the final book in the final day of the decathlon.
This is the point where I jump three years into the future to write what I’m about to write.
Apparently I had written this post about three years ago and completely forgot to write about my thoughts for all the books that I read for the decathlon. It’s been three years, and I will not talk about each and everyone of these books because I have no recollection whatsoever of what I think of these books. Except for Challenger Deep, though. That book changed me for the better and I will never forget that.
I’m happy that I got to finally finish the The Mortal Instruments series that day. I took me years to actually physically buy the book and then pick it up to read it, so to finish it was quite an achievement for me. I’m still behind on the Shadowhunters series as a whole. My most recent read was The Bane Chronicles, so I still have not read The Infernal Devices books and the Dark Artifices books. And the new MagnusAlec book, and I, for sure, will not be able to read Chain of Gold when it publishes until I’ve read all the other books. That’s a lot of books, and don’t get me started on the Nora Roberts books.
Tumblr media
Simon was fun read. I got to finally read it after so many people talking praise about it. I ended up posting this tweet and got a RETWEET AND a REPLY from Epic Reads themselves.
Tumblr media
They are truly the best representation of an entire community of book lovers.
What I’ve written below here is a list of the books that I read for the decathlon in the order that they were read. Just for my personal documentation.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (a day)
Atlantia by Ally Condie (a day)
Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (a day)
Dangerous Deception by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (a day)
Tonight the Streets are Ours by Leila Sales (a day)
Endgame: The Calling by James Frey (3 days)
Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (3 days)
City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare (3 days)
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman (a day)
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (a day)

Top 5 relationships in The Mortal Instruments
Lets be real the shadowhunter chronicles has grown into a huge world world with more characters than could ever all stay in one in any one institute (and remember institutes are for some reason designed to accommodate the same number as nice hotels) and because so many of them interact we have had some pretty cool characters and some pretty great relationships. I thought I would make ranking lists ranking the my personal favorites for members of family as well relationships in each series. IMPORTANT: When I say “relationships” I am not being specific to any one type of relationship (romantic/family/friend). I just mean two characters who share a type of bond.
Since The Mortal Instruments or TMI, came out first I will start with it. 5 relationships in TMI who have really well done dynamic’s and I want to take this opportunity to spotlight them below
5.) Jace & Church
Aww Church, he was doing the grumpy cat act before it was cool. Everybody loves Church. Church loves Jem and likes exactly one person per series/generation. In TMI the one person Church likes is Jace. Now other instances you could argue that Church liking Jace is just another attempt of CC to enforce that Jace (mr. blond hair, gold eyes, gold skin, takes a bath in golden spaghetti) is the golden boy and everybody should like him. But once you look at who Jace and Church are as characters (what character Jace has that's not referenced by his aforementioned coloring) them being buddies makes a lot of sense. For one thing we know from the falcon story that Jace is fond of animals that have adittutes, which Church certainly does. The first time he made friends with such an animal Valentine... But Valentine is gone when Jace meets Church, and none of the Lightwoods mind if Jace wants to goof off with the cat (to them that’s probably one of the least reckless things Jace likes to do). So for Jace Church is in essence a way to reclaim part of his childhood that Valentine tried to twist and corrupt.
On the other side I love how respectful Jace is of Church’s boundaries. Guys Church has a past as extensive and hard as any other character in TSC. HE has been both a pet and a wild cat many times over, he ha been treated well by some humans, and horribly by others. This is no purring kitty-cat that is going  to just climb into someones lap wanting hands run through his fur or to be picked up and carried around. No Church doesn’t like that. Jace understands this, and never tries to force Church to let him handle him. IF Church wants Jace to touch him he will take the initiative and walk up to Jace’s leg. If not Jace is perfectly happy to hang out in a room or follow the cat at a distance, pretending to chat with him. I saw a post that said that even after Church got reunited with Jem (churches OTH) Church still considers Jace his buddy and they hang out during visits, that is precious.
4.) Alec and Magnus aka Malec
Aww Here they are, fandom darlings and CC’s poster couple for LGBT+ inclusion. I promise that is not why I put them on this list. I actually never give characters or couples brownie points for being same sex or anything like that because so many writers try to get away with making “Gay” a characters whole personalty or squeezing in characters for the sole purpose of saying “look inclusion, look I can be woke” and then they don’t consider it necessary to put the level of characterization they would into a straight character in. I do like inclusion and feel it is important, but only when it is fully developed to the best of a creators abilities.
Now I will admit here that Malec are only my second favorite romantic couple in TMI. That being said I do really like them. I like the pace that their relationship develops at. When other couples did the whole love at first sight or suddenly inexplicably in love. Malec moved at what I consider a pretty realistic pace and you could easily follow their journey. In book 1 they met at a party and decided the other was pretty cute, started to spend time together on occasions, started to like each other, then started to really like each other. It’s  not until  the very end of book 6 where you fee like the two are really committed to the whole “Okay it’s you and me till the end” idea, and you are glad to finally see them there.
That brings me to my second reason for liking Malec. They are a hot mess, as all three main couples are, but unlike with the other two Malec never pretended to be anything other than a hot mess. If I compared Malec to Clace i would say that Clace follow a pretty typical fairy tale formula: I met you and I loved you, then the evils in the world conspired to keep us apart, but I fought my way back to you and now we can live happily ever after. Malec aren’t like a fairy tale though. They are that high-school/early college couple who are consistently on and off. The rocks in their path aren’t “evil forces” it’s just them. Just the fact that they both have a tendency to be whinny, stupid, jealous, controlling, a!@#$”s to each other. Honestly if they didn’t care so much about each other, then they would be a really toxic couple. But they do care a lot about each other. They hated when they were always fighting. They hated seeing each other so sad. But they couldn’t just forget about their problems or pretend them away. So many times throughout TMI Malec would find themselves at a cross road where on one path they force themselves to change and see if that made their relationship better , and another path were they decide that it is just to much to and call it quits. They broke up twice because they got to times where it was just to much to keep going the way they were and neither were ready to change. But then they couldn’t stop thinking about the other or missing the other. So, when they met up again they would always reconcile and be ready to put in the work to change their relationship for the better.  Looks like those changes worked out given that years down the line we see then happy, married with two kids, happy at their jobs, hosting social gathering with their friends as apposed to before when they would always spend then picking at each other or having an outright fight.
Malec are not perfect, TMI never pretends they are. They are both a lot to deal with and at least a few times one of them will slam their hands down on some surface, and I as a reader found myself wishing I could bring my hands down on the pair of thems heads. But I consider Malec a pretty gritty look at what any couple can be like at their lows, as well as the highs they can reach if they are willing to put in the time and work, and exactly why some are willing.
3.) Maia and Bat
What? What was that? If Malec are only my second favorite couple in TMI then who is my favorite? Oh, it’s Baia. Baia is like literally the perfect couple. They met years ago became best friends, tried dating and went back to being best friends when Maia-who had just gotten out of an abusive relationship and was still recovering- told Bat that was all she could handle. Their friendship is shown in the background throughout books 2-5 and we see that they always have each others backs. We see Bat is always their for Maia, always trying to take her out as a friend and convince her to have fun. Maia supports Bat’s DJ career and talks about how much she admires him for perusing such a normal mundane life because (regardless of the fact that they aren’t normal mundanes) its what he wants. Their relationship is brought to more of a focus in book 6 when shadowhunters leave, demons attack and their fellow downworlder start staging uprisings. Both of these two are still so young, and now (with their Alpha away indefinitely) their whole world is falling apart. Fixing this isn’t their job, no one has tasked them with it, but its the only way to keep themselves, each other, and everything they love safe. SO they make the choice to take action. Like everything in their lives since they met, they make a point to always support each other. Bat challenges an aggressive wolf for control of the pack because he has sen this wolf go bully those close to Luke and is determined to protect Maia. When Bat goes down in the fight Maia tags herself in and fights to protect him. When Maia wins she wakes up Bat isn’t upset or embarrassed that she had to save him, He immediately throws support to her as his Alpha. One of Maia’s first act is to make Bat her Beta because they are a team and their is no one she trusts more. They rebuild their pack and the Predator Lupis together, and also get back together. But that is less important because no matter what their relationship they have always and will always be there.
Seriously when every other couple acted stupid, was over dramatic, were never sure where they stood with each other; Maia and Bat were true friends, true love, and unwavering in their support. So what keeps them from being number 1 on this list? Well were still a background relatonship for most of TMI (a lot of the fandom either didn’t remember or didn’t care that they got together at the end or that they were even friends). Also knowing CC and general media aimed at TMI’s age group I have to unfortunately believe that if CC had wanted to bring more focus onto Maia and Bat,then she would have made them way more dramatic and less awesomely supportive. Moving on
2.) Valentine and Luke
I can hear the gasps from here. No, not read that wrong, it really says Valentine and Luke. How could I talk just get praising a supportive pair only to go and talk about a pair that betrayed and tried to annihilate the other? Well for one thing I will remind you Valentine and Luke whole dynamic is friends to enemies. As that they really work. Luke never had what it takes to be a shadowhunter on his own. He says himself that he couldn’t bear easy marks, he couldn’t do simple training exercises, he was miserable and ready to just drop out and give up. Then Valentine “came into my room and offered to train me”.  Even in the future Luke says that in their first interactions that Valentine saved him. That he is the one who made Luke into a shadowhunter. Well truth be told Valentine made Luke more of an assistant Shadowhunter, to him, but it is still farther than Luke was getting on his own, and its completely genuine when he says he loved and worshiped Valentine. You see why he was so blind to what Valentine (Stop trying to pretend you were always in the right Lucian) what both of them were becoming. Valentine gave Luke a life as a shadowhunter, and then he took it away. Valentine thought he was covering himself, that he was getting rid of a doubtful ally before he had a chance to become an enemy.
Getting Luke turned into a werewolf was easily the biggest mistake of Valentine’s life. Shadowhunter Luke was never able to do anymore than listen to Valentines orders and carry them out with no thought but how much doing so would please Valentine (Shadowhunter Luke= Valentines pet lap dog.) Werewolf Luke could say no. He could fight Valentine to a stand still at least, beat him at best. Werewolf Luke had knowledge and insight as to the needs of both Downworlders and Shadowhunters, and used that knowledge paired with Valentine’s impediment threats to rally the downworlders and get them to force the clave to give up 4 seats on the council. Because of Luke Valentines war caused Downworlders to get more rights instead of less. (Shadowhunter Luke=Valentines pet lap dog. Werewolf Luke= has more brains and skill than Valentine) Valentine thought he was getting rid of a potential threat when he had Luke turned; instead he gave his strongest supporter the push needed to break away from him, and the motivation to take become the man who had enough power to foil all his plans. That their is Irony at its finest my friends. I love it.
And Now 1.) Jace and Simon
This is hands down the best relationship in TMI and should I ever make a top 5 relationships This one will definitely be in it. How can they not when they are literary the TSC equivalent of Batman and Superman. (I mean that quite literally by the way. Jace is Batman: A hero who lived a life of pain and loss and used that as a motivation to protect people and prevent harm. Simon is Superman: A hero who wasn’t born into this world, these people weren’t always his people, but he decided that this was his home now and he was going to make it a better place.) There are so many things I love about these two I love how well their relationship was paced in how as they got to know each other more they transitioned from enemies to rivals to friends to family. I love their banter. these two together make me laugh more than any other pair. The number one thing I love about Jace and Simon is how careful CC was to keep them standing on Equal ground.
I meant they weren’t equal when it came to who had Clary’s affections. No Jace won that battle the moment Clary ditched simon, who was in the process of asking her out, to go find out who Jace was and what he was doing at the club. But lets look at virtually every other factor. Both are young men only 16 who have suffered the loss of a loved one before and are fiercely loyal and protective of the ones they have left. Neither are always sure who they can trust. In book 1 Jace is introduced s having vanquished more demons than anyone else in their age group, Before the end of Book 1 Simon is revealed to be skilled in archery and uses that skill to vanquish an incredibly dangerous Greater Demon. In book 2 Simon dies then is brought back from the dead to rise again, Jace does the same, through admittingly different methods, one book later. Jace is from a powerful race of hunters (shadowhunters), lets make Simon a member of a another powerful race of hunters (vampires and then Shadowhunters). Oh it looks like Jace has extra gifts his blood is special. Jace gives Simon his blood and Simon now has extra gifts to. Both of them have been hunted over their gifts, both have tried to help and protect the other. Jace giving Simon that Blood was a huge sacrifice and then he sacrificed for him again by admitting what he did to Valentine, knowing it will anger Valentine and could cause him to lose love for Jace. So in the second half of the series Simon starts Sacrificing for Jace. He gives up not only the mark of Chain which protected him from harm, but also a beloved memory connecting him to his own late father. Jace showed Simon a lot of the Shadoworld, and Simon returned that by teaching Jace aspects of mundane life. He told him pop culture references, let him stay with him in his apartment, taught him to play video games, and even took him grocery shopping. (Ask me why Jace seems more human when he is with Simon yet more like a fantasy man with Clary)
After reading Tales From The Shadowhunting Academy I will say that Jace was the ONLY one of the TMI gang who deserved to get Simon back. He is the only one who ever seemed to think about how Simon must be feeling or made any effort to be there for him. Alec and Magnus ignored Simon and acted like they didn’t care that he was back, while Isabelle and Clary were both incredibly selfish and only seemed to think of themselves. They actually had the audacity to blame Simon for not remembering them, and make him feel more like crap for not being able to just walk back into a life they knew he couldn’t remember, knowing that he sacrificed his memories to save THEIR lives. Clary Isabelle I am so disappointed in you ladies. Jace you are doing great.
Ending this to anyone wondering if at this point if I ship Jimon; Yes. I think they would have made an awesome couple. I also think they are awesome as friends and brothers in law. Any way you slice it Jimon is top tear writing
This has been my top 5 TMI relationships. I will do a TID top 5 when I either learn how to make these smaller, or have the time to do one this long again. Heads up it will probably be the second one.

What novels or book series would you recommend?
oh fuckin boy dude so many. 90% of what i read is either gay or scifi/fantasy or both, and some are technically for a younger audience but still great, so thats what most of this is which hopefully you’re cool with here goes
this got super long so i’m putting it under a cut. bolded titles are the ones that i’m super recommending, though i love them all
novels
the coldest girl in coldtown by holly black - vampires! a trans character! a bi character! one of the most novel approaches to vampires in fiction that i’ve seen! 10/10 would recommend
the darkest part of the forest by holly black - again, holly black is one of my favorite authors. this one’s got faeries (the proper vaguely unsettling kind that i’m all about) magical music, girls embracing their sexuality, girls being knights, interesting sibling dynamics, and a super cute m/m pairing
les miserables by victor hugo - ok yeah, it’s like 1400 pages long and historical fiction, but i love les mis a lot ok. it’s gotta be on this list just because it owns my ass. it’s like a old drunk french man trying to tell you about the june rebellion but he keeps getting distracted by things like people’s personal lives, the intricacies of the parisian underworld, and how much he wants to fuck the sewers. it’s wonderful
the night circus by erin morgenstern - magical circus that mysteriously appears for days at a time and then vanishes? a competition between young magicians drawn out for years? a wide variety of fascinating side characters? (i will say that the synopsis available for the book is somewhat misleading, as it’s actually less about our two protags and more about the circus itself. but that’s what makes it so enchanting)
the song of achilles by madeleine miller - retelling of patroclus and achilles story to be explicitly romantic. will make you feel like you’re floating on clouds and then rapidly crush your soul. sort of a happy ending? but it’s still a tragedy. their ending is the same as it was in the illiad so if you’re not prepared for that then maybe don’t read
good omens by neil gaiman and terry pratchett - a demon who’s not very good at being a demon and an angel who just wants to collect his books in peace thank you very much try to sabotage the end of times. absolutely hilarious
fairy and folktales of the irish peasantry by w.b. yeats - the best collection of irish faerie stories by one of my favorite poets. if you like creepy and tricky faeries i would def recommend checking these out
rootabaga stories by carl sandburg - another collection of folktales, this time inspired by the american midwest. kinda weird, kinda zany, very neat
the poison eaters by holly black - a short story collection of faery stories that are sometimes creepy, sometimes touching, sometimes gay. my personal favorite is about a library science student who finds a book collection where the characters come out at night and interact, but they’re all really great
series:
alex rider adventures by anthony horowitz - teenager gets recruited by MI6 as a spy, has incredibly high success rate, gets pretty fucked up along the way but damn those one liners tho, maybe have some self preservation alex? just a thought
all for the game by nora sakavic - about a fake sport called exy that’s kind of like indoor lacrosse but more violent. contains: crime families, found families, an aspec protag, girls kicking ass, unhealthy levels of sass, wonderful slowburn m/m that you can’t even see coming for a long while, and a happy ending for everyone!! i came for the gays and ended up reading all three books in two days. also you can get the whole series for less than five bucks on kindle! (note: tw for rape, physical abuse, torture, ptsd, child abuse, drug use, alcoholism, some use of slurs, mentions of past self harm, mental illness)
artemis fowl by eoin colfer - more faeries, but this time they live underground and are way more technologically advanced than humans. the first book focuses on our anti-hero trying to catch one and steal their gold, and they quickly become allies and solve faerie related cases together!! one of my favorite series growing up, and i cried in the middle of the hallway at school when i finished the last book
camp half-blood series by rick riordan - does rick riordan write a lot of mythology books? yes. do i love them all? yes. neurodivergent kids! kids from a huge range of racial and ethnic backgrounds! queer kids! collect them all! ft. greco-roman mythology and a lot of stupid jokes
emelan series by tamora pierce - ok this is easily one of my favorite series of all time. non-western high fantasy setting (picture greece/turkey, china, tibet, mongolia, scandinavia, etc type settings), following four young mages who have unique kinds of magic as they train and grow their skills and become powerful in their own right. only one of the kids is definitely white (jury’s still out on sandry), one is a lesbian, one is ace, one is pan, all four are raised by a loving f/f couple, body diversity, one of the best found families i’ve ever read, feminism, discussion of racism, classism, cultural identity, war, and so much more. it’s so so good and so under-appreciated please read all of the emelan books
the dark is rising sequence by susan cooper - full disclosure i have not finished this series yet but i’ve re-read the first book a million times. it’s a neat take on arthurian mythology, with dark forces trying to take over and kids getting shit done
diviners by libba bray - psychic teenagers in 1920s new york! i’m a slut for prohibition, but these are also super fun and have likable and real characters, and doesn’t only focus on wealthy white people having parties which is nice. the occult! government conspiracies! historical references! genuinely scary situations! it’s rad!
the enchanted forest chronicles by patricia c. wrede - i adore this series so so much. it’s about a princess who’s father keeps telling her that she can’t have hobbies like fencing or cooking or conjugating latin verbs because they’re unladylike and insists that she marry this doofus prince that she couldn’t care less about. so she runs away and volunteers to work for a dragon and proceeds to send away all the princes that try to rescue her. it’s genuinely funny, has a really neat magic system in the later books, great female friendships, cats, dragons who have no time for your gender roles, and wizards who are the most ridiculous group of antagonists you will ever see
the infernal devices by cassandra clare - i really really do not like the author of this series but it also broke me so it must go on the list. if you’re familiar with the mortal instruments or shadowhunters on freeform, it’s set in that universe in the 1870s in london and it’s very steampunk and very angsty and it made me cry a lot
the kane chronicles by rick riordan - see: camp half-blood series but egyptian
fablehaven by brandon mull - oooooh fuck me up i love this series. this is another one meant for slightly younger readers but all of brandon mull’s series are so wildly imaginative and i’m a slut for world building so. the premise is basically that there are secret preserves all over the world that house magical creatures, and five of these preserves have vaults with artifacts that when brought together make a key to this massive demon prison. an evil society called the society of the evening star is trying to get the artifacts to open the prison, and a different group who is allied with the preserves called the knights of the dawn is trying to get to them first to prevent this from happening. there are dragons, light and dark powers, crazy convoluted vaults to get through, and some really cool creatures and characters
beyonders by brandon mull - this guy again! this one’s about a parallel world called lyrian that people on earth can only get to through small liminal windows, and usually can’t get back through. the story follows two kids, jason and rachel, who get stuck in lyrian and end up becoming major members of the resistance against the evil emperor maldor. just like fablehaven, the world building is insane and you’ll fall in love with all the characters. this is yet another series that made me cry in the middle of class when i finished it
the kingkiller chronicle by patrick rothfuss - this is series is long as all fuck and the last book isn’t out yet but it’s my #1 favorite series of all time. i found out about it bc a cashier at a local grocery store held up the line to write it down for me and i never went back. parts of it are achingly, hauntingly beautiful, other parts are hilarious enough to leave you in stitches, others make you want to pull your hair out. there’s sass, recklessness, beautiful and deadly girls, an overwhelming love and emphasis on the importance of music and storytelling, magic that’s more like science, ethnic adversity, student loans, a thing that might be a cow or might be a dragon depending on who you ask, and more quotable lines than you could dream of. the audiobook by nick podehl is also fabulous, and lin manuel miranda is producing and adapting it for the screen and maybe stage at some point in the future!
a modern faerie tale by holly black - guys. i love holly black. almost everything she’s ever written is on this list. this one is fairly self explanatory by the title, but it’s gritty and dark and has those lovely creepy faeries that she’s so great at writing. also a surprising m/m couple in the last book, both of whom are characters in the other two installments. (tw for drug use/addiction, brief sexual assault, and probably other things that i can’t remember right now)
the raven cycle by maggie stiefvater - also in my top 3 favorite series of all time, i cannot begin to describe this series. i first read it while up in the nc mountains which improved the experience to a surprising degree, but it’s stuck with me for the last several years. basically 5 teenagers go in search of a dead welsh king, but along the way there is magic, psychics, ghosts, a sentient forest, dreams becoming reality, curses, teenage shenanigans, classic cars, swearing, church, kisses and not kisses, illict hand holding, a baby crow, bisexuality, a death list, hitmen, and nicknames and it will consume your heart before you know what’s happening to you (tw child abuse, implied sexual assault, substance abuse, dissociation, mentions of past suicide attempts, body horror, gore, and disturbing scenes esp. in the last book)
six of crows by leigh bardugo - a team of criminals band together to break into an impossible fortress, fall in love, con an entire city, and get rich. set in the same universe as the grisha trilogy (which is also good but not as good as soc), this is basically a heist followed by a con, but pulled off by ruthless teenagers and with the help of magic
curseworker trilogy by holly black - crime families, magic that can only done through touch so everyone wears gloves, moral ambiguity, and a twisted romance. one of holly black’s best and most underrated series
baccano! by ryohgo narita - this is a japanese light novel series which has been adapted into an anime, but is much more extensive in print. the plot is extremely convoluted, but an absolute ride spanning several centuries, although the bulk of it is in the 1930s in nyc and chicago. there’s an elixir of immortality, crime families, trains, a solipsistic assassin and his mute assassin gf, serial killers, a demon with a catch phrase, murder, explosions, adorable couples, gambling, a gang leader named jacuzzi who is always terrified, killer corporations, and much much more
no.6 by asuka asano - another japanse series, this time focusing on two boys, one who grew up in a utopian city, the other who grew up outside the walls after the city destroyed his life. they meet when they’re 12 years old, and several years later, they’re reunited when the outsider rescues the city boy from arrest. they, along with a pimp and a nonbinary dog hotel owner, try to expose and overthrow the government. also ft. drag performances, mice who like shakespeare, killer bees, and boys falling in love.
the merlin saga by t.a. barron - my favorite take on arthurian mythology, chronicling merlin as he comes into his power. there’s a vividly magical island, giants, amulets, talking trees, stones that will try to swallow you, a swamp witch, celtic deities, huge wicker hats, poetry, new kinds of fruit, people that are also deer, and human’s long lost wings.
