Writblr Intro 2: Electric Boogaloo

My name is Nico, my pronouns are he/him and it/its, and I'm a queer teen writer. I write mostly fantasy, with a dash of sci-fi and thriller.

Most of what I write is YA/teen, though I have ideas for other things (specifically middle grade & perhaps a NA story) that I may work on in the future.

I'm OK with adults following, but don't be creepy, and don't follow if your blog is specifically 18+.

This tumblr will be mostly writing content, along with some art, memes, social justice, and posts I just generally like. I also post writing advice, and my masterpost can be found here.

Some things: I am a queer inclusionist of all good-faith identities. I am autistic and am very passionate about disability activism, especially in regards to making writblr a more welcoming place for my fellow disabled & mentally ill people. I will not tolerate any sort of bigotry and am quick to block, though I will take questions in good faith and am glad to answer them.

I write mostly fantasy, often heavily featuring mental health, queerness, friendship, and morality. And as the lovely review above shows, I am not hesitant toward angst <3

Speaking of Mika, aka @strawberrystarcake: we run a short story event each month. I post a prompt, and then people write stories based on them. (I've written 2 so far.) The masterlist of all stories people have written for it (including me!) is here.

ACTIVE WIPS:

Gay Fairytale Series/GFS: This is a 5-book YA fantasy series that is a loose retelling of a few fairytales (mainly Cinderella). The books are, currently: Moonlit Blood, and... the other 4, lmao. I don't put titles online. (Summary for books 1 and 2 is below.)

Moonlit Blood, aka GFW1: When Angel Lavoie accidentally cons their way into having to do work, they must team up with four other dysfunctional criminals in order to crash a royal masquerade and steal the cage that houses the soul of a vengeful god-monster. Features themes of family, friendship, and self-worth. (intro)

GFS book 2, aka GFW2: Rowan never meant to be drawn into anything. But when, instead of dying like they were supposed to, Angel and their friends literally break magic, she doesn't really have a choice. Features themes of trust, betrayal, and doing the right thing.

The Rose Librarians: Eleanor finds a magic library in the middle of nowhere. It's all good at first, but when the library's secrets turn out to be darker than expected, she must team up with Charlie--the strange but knowing librarian--in order to keep herself alive. Features themes of depression, self worth, and coping mechanisms. (Intro.)

The Intriguing Death of Thalia May/NT21: my NaNoWriMo 2021 project. Ace Acker has just been accepted into the best academy the country has to offer. But when people start disappearing and his ex-girlfriend's ghost comes back to yell at him about it, he realizes this will not be a normal senior year. (Intro.)

Okay, so, for the record: I absolutely love that Nicercy is the only ship that’s twice on this list and everything else is all fresh and that the last ten oneshots I wrote actually span six different fandoms.

Now, to the analysis! Because I am 100% aware of what I prefer to write for an opening. I pick one character from the main paring and write an opening sentence mostly involving their current emotions or situation and use that to tie into a brief introduction to what this fic’s setting is.

Here’s the new thing I noticed in this game: When I break that pattern by opening up in a dialogue instead, it’s because I think I’m funny. Dialogue fic openers only happen when I think I have a funny dialogue that’d be a cute way to open the story. All serious openings are reserved to the usual pattern.

That’s interesting. I did not notice that one before.

Never apologize for sending me many questions. I am a talkative person, I love those rare occasions when I can let the words flow. I put it under read more because it’s long and, you know, contains unpopular opinions. Let the hater killing game begin. 

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*

I was thinking about it and Komaeda/Mikan is probably my most “what?” pair on this list. It doesn’t mean that I completely don’t understand it, I can imagine why some people like them together: he is sick and dying, she is a nurse who loves people depending on her, she was taking care of him and Souda was even ashamed when he realized that Mikan had to undress Komaeda to put him in his hospital gown. Ok, I get it. And cracks are pretty normal for any fandom. But honestly? The disproportion between time they spent together and how popular this ship became turns out to be really huge. Another pair that comes to my mind is Komaeda/Nanami. The reasons are pretty much the same as above. I noticed that DR fandom likes shipping together victims and murders but aside of their final trail, Komaeda and Nanami have no scenes. They hardly ever interact and again, I know that some people simply like cracks, and it is fine. I’m just surprised that both pairings are much more popular than I could expect. 

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?*

Komaru/Fukawa. I don’t have any problem with them as a pair but I don’t ship them romantically. Romances are cool and shipping is fun, yet sometimes I get sad when I see how people ignore friendships. I believe in power of platonic love and hardly ever touch two characters who state many times that they are friends. Even Kodaka wrote that he wished to show growing friendship between two girls. For Fukawa this relationship is extremely important because she was in love before but she had never a friend. I feel that romance takes something away from them?On the side note, I’m kinda angry at how fans keep calling them lesbians. Seriously, you can ship them and say that Fukawa is bi. It doesn’t kill anybody.  

4.Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?*

Do I have a real, hated and cursed NOTP? I don’t think so. Sure, there are some pairs I dislike but I don’t hate anything with burning passion. Besides, my nope-ships aren’t particularly popular. Like, I hardly ever see romantic Junko/Mukuro or stuff like that so I have no reasons to be salty. I’m too good for this meme.  

9. Most disliked character(s)? Why? // 13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?

I decided to answer both questions together because my opinion about a disliked character is also rather unpopular. Imagine me cleaning my throat, hahaha - Tsumiki Mikan. I’ve never hid that I’m not her biggest fan and I have a bunch of problems with her. Maybe I wouldn’t be so strict and call Mikan my most hated character - Hanamura and Hiyoko’s free time events were testing my patience too - but my other disliked characters are less popular and Mikan usually takes high spots in popularity polls so choosing her seems to be the most controversial for salty asks  Whenever I see Mikan I also see wasted opportunities. I didn’t like her attitude; Mikan had an annoying seiyuu, high-pitched and crying voice (you can laugh but after the third trail I had a headache because I was so done with her screaming. I’m not lying. This is something I’ll never forget), I also disliked her tendency to panicking and crying. Later we learn that her behavior comes from difficult past and this is really interesting, and I like it. But I also think that Mikan is an extremely passive character. When I first started Danganronpa, I disliked Fukawa, I was annoyed by Kuzuryuu. And now they both are among my most loved characters. I like them because they have changed a lot and I was missing it with Mikan. It’s a shame since I enjoyed watching her during investigations, when Mikan was more confident and helpful. I hoped to see her like that in the main gameplay. However, at the beginning of new chapters she was a crybaby again. As if writers didn’t want her to be more comfortable around people. My other problem with Mikan is how she became so oversexualized. I admit, it happened especially in anime but the game also used her as a fanservice character and this was something I hated. I know that many people didn’t mind it as much but showing a character who was most likely a victim of sexual violence as a fanservice character was a little off for me. And I was so disappointed by her murder case… Tsumiki would make a perfect killer - she was shy and looked innocent yet her fascination with injuries and free time events were giving that dark vibe. Her motives could be great. And, for me, they weren’t. Now again, I know that many people enjoyed her trail and didn’t mind the fever but personally I found it to be lazy. Why couldn’t she have as complicated and interesting reasoning as Peko, or Tanaka, or Komaeda? Why couldn’t she make decision on her own, have doubts, whatever? It was some deus ex machina, Mikan magically became crazy for the plot twist. It’s a little long but I’m generally salty about Mikan because she could be one of my favourite characters yet there are too many points in her writing that disappointed me.

16. If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?

I would delete the second season. The end. And more seriously, the thing I disliked the most was probably the whole brainwashing part. If I could change it, I would show Junko being that charismatic mastermind that she was supposed to be and manipulating the students, using their love and insecurities, waking up something dark in them. 

Another thing I would love to the see is DR2 cast being main antagonists of the Future Arc. Instead of Naegi fighting in a totally pointless battle, I would change that part with Despair coming to the Future Foundation on their own and made Naegi search for them.(I actually still want to write it as a fanfic ;) )

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Hinata/Nanami. I… just love their free time events. I love watching them together and being awkward, playing game, supporting each other. Hinata and Nanami were so innocent, sweet and good that I will never stop mourning this pair. 

27. Least shippable character?

Hifumi and Hanamura. But to be fair, it was probably the writers’ intention; they are blunt, keep saying inappropriate comments about girls, have dirty minds and as if to mark that they’re supposed to be gross, are also designed as less attractive than the rest. Honorable mention goes to Togami because seriously? Togami? In love? Taking someone as his equal? Promising love? It’s too hard to imagine, hahaha

the first character i ever fell in love with: so i actually read a lot of fanfiction before i got into the series and. i fell so in love with leah clearwater it wasn’t even funny.

a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: i actually used to be super obsessed with both alice cullen & rosalie hale, but over the years my love for them has wavered in favor of some of the smaller, less-rated characters. idk.

a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: y’know, when i read the series, i was very much team jacob; bella/jacob weren’t my OTP, but i shipped them more than i shipped bella/edward. as i grew older and started looking at the series in a different light though, i realized that jacob black deserved hella better than to be her second choice, though. so now it’s more like ‘bella/edward i guess just let there be jacob/happiness’ bye.

my ultimate favorite character™: CAN I SAY CHARLIE SWAN BECAUSE SASSY POLICE CHIEF DADDY IS MY FAV. i also have so much love for embry call and jessica stanley, though. and i mean obviously claire, even though we got nothing on her in the series.

prettiest character: oh fuck. okay so i’m super in love with julia jones, christian serratos and dakota fanning, so probably leah, jane or angela?? and then obviously garrett and paul for dudes because hot damn at those two. lol i can’t pick one okay. 

my most hated character: lol can i say bella swan?? or edward cullen?? like given the series is all about them; I REALLY DISLIKE BOTH OF THEM. i can’t even pinpoint what it is about them, because i feel like if the series weren’t about this bullshit triangle, i could like them individually. but with what we’re given, they just both rub me the wrong way man. i also really dislike victoria. like we know me. i LOVE a good villain. but i just never could get behind victoria and her mentality and obsessiveness? idk. like she’s not the worst character out there but she’s definitely not ranking in my top anything.

my OTP: I MEAN ASIDES FROM QUIL/CLAIRE SINCE WE GOT NOTHING ON THEM IN THE SERIES I’D HAVE TO SAY. oh geez idek i really love the imprint couples obviously, especially paul/rachel. they’re both fiery people and i think it makes for an interesting match, especially given rachel’s desire to be away from la push and paul’s personality and just. yes. i also really love kate and garrett though, for pretty much the same reason. 

my NOTP: lol does anyone actually like jacob/renesmee? honestly i’d probably be fine with it if it wasn’t for the fact that she’s bella’s daughter. the entire thing feels like a cop out to me, to make the team jacob shippers happy; but in reality, it just creeped them all out because HE FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER FUCKING DAUGHTER NOTHING WEIRD ABOUT THAT. i think it’s also the fact that while young imprints are supposed to start with this very platonic bond, whereas that didn’t really happen with jacob and nessie? like he was basically IN LOVE with her from day one and it was weird. i just. idk man i’ve got so many issues with this ship. if you ship it that’s cool, and like i note it as a canon ship in most of claire’s verses. doesn’t mean i have to like it. i also really don’t like the main two ships (bella/edward and bella/jacob) but that has so much to do with the triangle. seriously i could rant for days about how much those three bother me. OH AND LET’S NOT TALK ABOUT BLACKWATER (seth/jacob or leah/jacob) BECAUSE I HAVE SO MANY ISSUES WITH THAT SHIP OKAY. wow for someone who wants jacob/happiness i really don’t ship him with anyone lol.

saddest death: DON’T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT SETH CLEARWATER DYING IN THE MOVIES. AND THE LOOK ON HIS SISTER’S FACE AS SHE REALIZES HE’S GONE. I KNOW IT WASN’T A REAL DEATH BUT IT FUCKED ME UP. i also get super emotional over harry clearwater’s death though, namely the effect it has on my babies, so.

favorite season: so there wasn’t really seasons but. let’s talk books first. my all-time favorite book of the series was actually the illustrated guide. as someone who absolutely adores the minor characters, i loved getting this book that went a bit more in depth about their backstories and everything in comparison to what information bella gave us in the actual series. real books wise, eclipse was my favorite, and it’s also my favorite of the movies. i think it’s just the most interesting; twilight is all about the love (ew), i found new moon very boring, and we don’t talk about breaking dawn (see below). but i liked eclipse, with the whole newborn war and stuff. plus a bit of closure with the love triangle bullshit, even if some people might not see it that way. (AND WE GOT TO MEET LEAH AND SETH IN ECLIPSE WHAT COULD BE BETTER)

least favorite season: breaking dawn for book, and breaking dawn- part 1 for movie. i hate breaking dawn guys. while i whipped through the other books (even new moon, despite how boring i found it), it took me months to finish breaking dawn. i just wasn’t there for this pregnancy bullshit. and while i don’t mind the second movie (because at least we get lots of minor characters and that epic FAKE battle scene that i’m forever angry about), the first movie is just such a yawn. i repeat, so not here for this pregnancy bullshit. i’m also just super unhappy with how the series ended all ‘happily ever after’ ; i’m not saying happily ever afters don’t exist, but it all just wrapped up a little too perfectly for my liking. 

character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: okay, let me clarify something to begin with; i don’t hate rosalie hale. i don’t want to undervalue the fact that she is a great character. but i feel the hype around her is a little overdramatic, so to speak; i get that she’s an awesome character, but there are so many other awesome characters out there, y’know?? but yeah idk there aren’t really any fan favorites that i absolutely hate (well, bella and edward, but there’s a lot of hate for them so). 

my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: lol jessica stanley. she’s such a lil’ bitch sometimes but that’s why i absolutely adore her?? idek.

my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: LEAH CLEARWATER. DESERVED SO MUCH MORE THAN THE BULLSHIT BITTER-EX PLOT STEPHANIE MEYER GAVE HER I’M JUST SAYING. I DARE YOU TO DISAGREE. I FUCKING DARE YOU.

my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: oh geez do i have any wrong/nasty ships for this series?? i honestly can’t think of any like. i guess some people might argue claire/quil is gross but i personally don’t have any issues with it so??

my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship’: carlisle/esme, hands down. i mean they’re definitely relationship goals and i adore them, but they’re not one of those ships i get emotional and cry about all the time.
