A rare portrait of Carnot

Well, not so rare anymore since I've now posted it.

It's a tiny 18 x 22 oil canvas kept in the Carnot family archives, reproduced on the back cover of the 1952 edition of M. Reinhard's Le Grand Carnot vol. II, of which you can see a picture I've taken with my phone camera on the left. In its special number about Lazare Carnot (1923), La Sabretache published a colored version of it (picture on the right).

I don't know much else about this portrait, not even whether Carnot had posed for it or not; what's certain is that one of his brothers didn't list it among his most accurate depictions. Still, the way Carnot is represented here matches with the physical descriptions given by La Révellière's in his mémoires.

I'm a many-many-generations-Appalachian, and when I was a teenager, everyone assumed I'd leave, so I thought I should. And then when I did leave, someone called my mama and told her I was the most homesick child they'd seen in decades, that she should come get me. She didn't, because she wanted me to succeed that badly, but I got myself back to Appalachia PDQ. And then I never left again, because Appalachia is where I belong.

I know the stereotypes, but we can be happy here, too. I've got a good life, with a well-paying job I love, a silver anniversary spouse, wonderful children, and a nice house. My mama lives with us and that's just how we like it. Our quietly queer little family is proud to be Appalachian, and our children learn our history, like the recorded story from their great-grandfather who saw the Baldwin-Felts get off the train in Matewan.

Are there problems in Appalachia? Sure. But that doesn't mean we are all living in misery. Appalachian lives are more than poverty porn and strip mines and drugs and Dew mouth. We have our own festivals and music and art and foods and books to celebrate our shared heritage. We have our own holidays, too, like the first day of deer season. There can be a lot of joy in our Appalachian lives, if we let it.

And of course, we can all join together to remind folks that #heaintfromaroundhere ;)

I don't talk about it enough, but I absolutely adore the Wayward Children books from Seanan McGuire. They always leave me with these huge images and impressions and I think about them all the time. If I recall it correctly, during one of her first descriptions of the drowned world she visited, Cora says this line after describing her transformation. It struck me vividly, and I sketched a version of this image soon after I read it. A few years later, I was still thinking about it, and I drew it digitally. I still think about it even now, more years later, and geez now I want to reread those books again...
