my favorite thing about amano shrimp is how they will just yoink fish food away from the actual fish and then swim away to perch elsewhere while eating it

my second favorite thing is how you can see ALL THEIR INTERNAL ORGANS

Looking a bit better a few days after big maintenance. The new plants are settling well it looks like, the stem plants are growing well. Can't wait to be back home after work and stare at my aquarium some more. I didn't get to do the last adaptions I made for shrimps yet, I got sick last weekend, so that's still on my to-do-list. Not sure yet if I'm going for Amano shrimp or neocaridina. I've had neocaridina before but without much luck. They're my favourite, though! So cute.

SHRIMP TOURNAMENT!!!

AMANO SHRIMP (Caridina multidentata)

AKA: yamato shrimp, japanese shrimp, algae shrimp

famous aquascaper Takashi Amano, on his journey to find all the best components in an aquarium, saw the potential in these algae-eating titans, and their popularity has since skyrocketed! these big guys are energetic, curious, and supposedly mischievous, reportedly having a tendency to swipe food from fish. mild hierarchies tend to form based on size, where larger amano shrimp will be treated with more caution and submission. they tend to get to food first and purposefully swim in a manner that scares off smaller shrimp, which sounds hard to imagine, but it somehow works!

BAMBOO SHRIMP (Atyopsis moluccensis)

AKA: wood shrimp, fan shrimp, singapore flower shrimp

these guys are well known for their wonderfully unique appearance, with large fan-like appendages they use for feeding. their feeding technique is described as highly entertaining- they basically hold out these fans in front of their heads, facing in the direction of any nearby strong current, and then bring these fans to their mouths to eat up all of the collected food. honestly it's like watching a toddler nonchalantly shoving fistfuls of cake into their mouth. it's adorable!

A friend was winding their shrimp tank down after ~4 years so they gave me their shrimp, including Big Bertha the gigantic and ancient Amano shrimp who has quickly become the queen of the tank and my heart.

VD: a tiktok set to the song 'Da Biggest Bird' by Saint Mercat∅r of Big Bertha the huge female Amano shrimp hanging out with Gonzo the bamboo shrimp and swimming into the cherry shrimp feeding frenzy to take an entire food pellet to eat by herself. I also introduce Medium Michael the normal sized amano shrimp, also eating his own pellet.

Fish tank update! Two weeks ago I thinned out the plants and they’re coming back strong.
