Personal recap at European Championship - Pairs FS
I guess this is one of the best attended Pairs events all season or even of most European championships! Also Kaunas really impresses with the quality of filming and the flag thing is quite cool.
Can't say the result is what I wanted...
The favorites struggled, first Conti/Macii in the SP and now Mini and Nikita.... wasn't their Europeans but both are great teams and imo overall better than those that placed above them. Anyway congrats to the other two Italian teams! 🥳🇮🇹
CATS WON! 😸😻I am really happy for Matteo Guarise, a European medal on his 10th European championship! This team with Lucrezia Beccari works really well and I like the fun they have with the program - hate the music cuts though. I also like that with their age gap they don't portray a loving couple on ice but go for something different.
I am just glad Luka Berulava/Anastasia Metelkina didn't win honestly...I will never forgive him how he treated his former partner Karina Safina and dumped her so horribly when she was struggling. A silver on the first try as a new team is still admittedly a very good result. I really didn't like the program. I am all in for quirky but this was just weird. I also love Queen music usually but not on them...
Ghilardi/Ambrosini were great! 👏👏👏Finally a really good program for them! Europeans seems to be their competition. A medal last season, a medal this season! I also like the dark Bram Stoker theme, they sell it so well!
I am really sad about Minerva Hase/Nikita Volodin 😭😭😭 Their chemistry is spellbinding. And in such a short time they developed so well. Today they were too many mistakes but as they struggled with illness and couldn't train this much, it's still a good achievement honestly. Also pressure was certainly high coming in as GPF champions. This season is just a start to their career and I am really sure there is more greatness to follow! ❤️ How about winning Worlds??? (I may be a bit biased as Mini is from my hometown and her mother and grandparents greeted me at German Nats bc they remembered me from Nebelhorn Trophy 😅, but aside from my bias they just deserve the world)
Hocke/Kunkel also did the best they can in the current condition. 🫶 Robert Kunkel should probably not be skating at all with his severe back injury that also will not really heal if you carry a partner daily around. But I applaud him for not giving up. Annika shines bright like the sun, but she seems to have some mental problem with the 3S. She does them well in practice and well in warm-up and then doubles them in competition or falls. I swear if not for those jumps they would be top contenders for every international medal, but she really has to get her mental state together.
The Hungarian team Pavlova/Sviatchenko are technically superb. They lack a lot of connection to music but I think for the way they are they did well. I do think they were scored quite strictly compared to others but I think the final placement is right. Loved her reaction at the end of the program!

Grand Prix Espoo 22 - Pairs SP Starting Order and Predictions
Tumblr media
1. Rebecca Ghilardi / Filippo Ambrosini - Italy
2. Anastasiia Metelkina / Daniil Parkman - Georgia
3. Alisa Efimova / Ruben Blommaert - Germany
This will be a very exciting event from a developmental standpoint. Much of this field is either making their Grand Prix Debut in this event, or is continuing their Debut season. Personally I’m very excited for the depth and diversity that has been shown in this post Olympic, post Russia season.
Even though there is a very clear path to the podium for some teams, there are SO many possibilities based on cleanliness, and how many points may be given up between the SP and the FS.
For Grand Prix Final qualification, a 🥇 will get either G/A or M/P into the final. A 🥈 with anyone else getting 1st will also get them into the final. Based on this field, it would be VERY hard to turn the pairs field into a 3-way-tie-break between Kovalev/Kovalev, McIntosh/Mimar and the potential 🥉.

i saw the last couple groups in the FP at the John Nicks Pairs Challenge today - the physical courage it takes to be a pairs girl 😱 if a pairs team makes what they do look easy, they are amazing. and a number of these teams did make their elements look smooth and controlled. it's early in the season, nobody skated clean today. some of the throws looked so hard on the skater's knee. the team who won had 3 elements with negative GOE and a fall. pairs is so hard omg
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chelsea Piers has 2 rinks, but they always hold this competition in the one without stands. the few spectators, maybe 30? stand at the boards - there's glass all the way around except where the judges are, and the top of the boards are eye level in a lot of places, so it's like watching the skaters in a fish bowl. a lot of the skaters are warming up off ice or talking to people while the competition is going on. and maybe 15 other people sitting by the windows not even watching, scrolling their phones or hanging out
the team representing Uzbekistan who won bronze, Geynish/Chigirev, are new to me - they have a cool program to this song by Concha Buika
Ghilardi/Ambrosini skated to Phantom whyyy lol of all the music in the world, if you're a top team, why pick music that's been skated to death - their spin was invalidated, there was an issue with a lift and they had some issues with jumps, but no falls. in the moment, their placement was still surprising because all the teams were having tricky moments
Efimova/Mitrofanov looking like they're gelling for a brand new team- they skated Je Suis Malade
Tumblr media
Laurin/Ethier looked like they'd progressed with this program since Championnats last month
pairs teams have some nice spin positions that i've never seen dancers use, and i wonder why - you see so many of the same ones across the ice dance field - maybe it's partly the size difference being greater in pairs teams making some different ones possible
the biggest reason i think it seems like pairs is SO hard is that most teams look like all their energy needs to go into doing the elements so there's less left over for choreo or listening to and expressing the music. and lifts - executing them for levels and keeping their partner safe doesn't always leave room for turning cleanly or smoothly on a skate level. the teams in those top groups today never looked precarious - sometimes pairs competitions can be terrifying, but these teams were at a high level

Favorite 2023/2024 Programs Pairs SP
Pairs event at Worlds was so fucking good even without the Russians. (You'll only see me saying this for pairs. This is the only discipline where Russians were legitimately above the rest). But this season did prove that the field can actually manage without them.
Have to say tho that most the programs aren't really good and we're desperately in need of some good Choreo which is too rare at this point (Cheng Peng save me!).
So here's list if my favourite programs from this season. Rankings are to be taken with a grain of salt.
Honorable mentions go to
Ghilardi/Ambrosini (The Ecstasy of Gold). Choreo did not left an imprint but I love the music choice the costumes and the general vibe. G/A had some great packaging this season.
Ariano Kent/Laliberté Laurent (500 miles). You just can't keep the Canadians away from Sadboi music and this baby pairs came out with the weepy ballad variant of 500 miles. It's an experience for sure.
7th - Yuna Nagaoka/Sumitada Moriguchi - Can’t Take My Eyes of You, by John Lloyd Young, choreo by Cathy Reed
Fun. Charming. Nice to watch. Nothing special but this is one of those feel good programs. The fact that YunaSumi for their first season together have better packaging than RikuRyu is nothing short of tragic.
6th - Anastasia Golubeva/Hektor Giotopoulos-Moore - Architect of the Mind, by Kerry Muzzey, choreo by Jonathan Guerreiro
Recycled from last year. I love the baby Australians so much and this routine show why. Ability to follow the relentless pace of the music. A sense of drama. Good unisson and well matched lines. I especially love the step sequence where their bodies unfurl to the swirls of the music a bit like an accordion. It scratches an itch. Love Nastya's lines and love Hektor's commitment to the performance.
5th - Minerva Fabienne Hase/Nikita Volodin - Stay, by Rihanna, choreo by Paul Bolle and Mark Pillay
Not the most original thing and Virtue/Moir did it better. But Hase/Volodin are not Tessa and Scott, nor do they need to be. It could be a bit bland and tbh if the team were only slightly less talented it would be.
But instead we have a nice, light, romantic program. It goes perfectly well with Minerva's softness. Volodin is very solid but non existent as a performer and that's ok ! They only have to move prettily to the music and it works for them.
4th - Ellie Kam/Danny O’Shea - East of Eden, choreo by Drew Meekins
What good skating skills does to a motherfucker !!!
Even with the tech shortcomings (that throw jump is not even close to ready), when I saw them live in Angers this seasons they blew everyone put of the water with this SP. Skating skills are so rare among pairs skaters and it's so good to see them being rewarded by the judges for it. The sheer ice coverage the breath the ease of their skating is wonderful to see live. And East of Eden, overused as it is, is a perfect match for their brand. The music is suitably intense. Definitely one of the highlights of the season.
3rd - Cheng Peng/Lei Wang - The Storm Driven Sea, by Christopher Tin, choreo by Lori Nichols
Definitely the best choreo of the bunch, gets bumped from first place because Peng/Wang are a new pair and it shows. We sadly did not get the performance that short program deserved. The drama the position, the intensity... Unmatched.
Deanna Stellato-Dudek/Maxime Deschamps - Oxygen, by Cirque du Soleil choreo by Julie Marcotte
I HATED the music at the start of the season. The loud breathing triggered my misophonia and the vocals were grating.
I love it ! It's unlike anything else in the current pairs' field. Cirque du Soleil doesn't get more Québécois than that. The step sequence is fun. The lift rocks.
1st - Annika Hocke/Robert Kunkel - I Love Rock and Roll, by Joan Jett, choreo by Luca Lanotte
Speaking of rock... Best short of the season hands down. Gorgeous lifts with hard and creative dismount? Check! Massive throw jump? Check! Big twist? Check! Great step sequence with loads of attitude? Check! Music that will make the audience loose it? You bet! Performance levels? Unmatched!
Of fucking course they judges hated it and they were robbed blind at worlds.

who will qualify for gpf pairs edition
already qualified are stellato/deschamps pereira/michaud & conti/macii
currently in the top six are also hocke/kunkel pavlova/sviatchenko peng/wang
still able to qualify at nhk are hase/volodin ghilardi/ambrosini beccari/guarise liu/nagy & golubeva/giotopoulos moore
h/v need to medal, depending on how the other teams do a 4th place with over 162,16 pts could still work
g/a need gold or silver, if they get bronze itll again depend on the other teams + they would need over 182,97 pts
b/g & l/n both need gold, if either gets silver it again depends on the other teams + b/g would need over 192,55 pts, l/n would need over 196,31 pts, if no other team manages to qualify a bronze for either would get them in
ggm chances are not great, assuming the other teams dont totally mess up the only way for them to qualify is if they get gold + over 175,27 pts
technically if no other team at nhk makes it laurin/ethier could also still qualify with a gold

GPF (and JGPF) 2022 Predictions (and Dream Podiums)
I’ve been enjoying this season a lot so far, though I’ve not watched every single competition all the way through the way I have some years. The results have been not entirely predictable (mostly in a good way), and there have been some interesting new faces in Junior and Senior competitions.
I’m going to take a stab at my predictions for the podiums of the GPF and JGPF and also my dream podiums. It will be interesting to see how these competitions turn out as a lead in to the second half of the season!
Men
Predicted Podium
Shoma Uno JPN
Illia Malinin USA
Kao Miura JPN
I really do think that 3rd is wide open and 1st and 2nd will be between Shoma and Illia. I am putting Shoma above Illia in my predictions based on experience and consistency. Any mistake on a big element that Illia makes hits him hard, Shoma carries his scores with a more even distribution. But either order between the two of them wouldn’t surprise me.
Dream Podium
Shoma Uno JPN
Illia Malinin USA
Sota Yamamoto JPN
Overall, I would honestly be happy with just about any arrangement that has Shoma on the podium (preferably in first). There is a deep nostalgia about this field for me of having Shoma and Sota skating together on GPF ice again though, and I would love to see Sota podium. The only way I see Illia not on the podium is if he has a disaster of a skate, and I do not wish that on him at all. He’s an endearing kid, and I’m glad that he seems to be working on improving the artistic side of his skating.
Women
Predicted Podium
Kaori Sakamoto JPN
Mai Mihara JPN
Loena Hendrickx BEL
Honestly, there is so little spread in this field when it comes to top scores this season. So much is going to depend on who has a good day and who doesn’t. Definitely keeps things interesting! I genuinely enjoy the skating of all of these skaters, and I hope that they all skate well.
Dream Podium
Kaori Sakamoto JPN
Kim Yelim KOR
Rinka Wantanabe JPN
Honestly, I’d be pretty happy with any podium. I want to see Kaori win this, partially because I don’t want to see her rattled from her 2nd place at her last major competition. I also just love her skating. Honestly, 3rd I dithered so much between Rinka and Mai, but I have been really deeply enjoying Rinka’s skating this season!
Pairs
Predicted Podium
Riku Miura / Ryuichi Kihara JPN
Alexa Knierim / Brandon Frazier USA
Deanna Stellato-Dudek / Maxime DesChamps CAN
If you’d told me a few years ago that I would be putting a Japanese pair as my extremely strong favorite for winning the GPF in pairs, I would have been surprised, but Miura/Kihara have been so impressive this season! And I don’t know that there’s anyone in this field who can challenge them if they skate clean.
Dream Podium
Riku Miura / Ryuichi Kihara JPN
Rebecca Ghilardi / Filippo Ambrosini ITA
Emily Chan / Spencer Akira Howe USA
I think that realistically, the Italian and American pair I have here don’t have... that much chance at the podium outside of 3rd, but there’s a big race for third and not a huge amount in the scores after the drop off from Knierim/Frazier. Knierim/Frazier are fine and deserve their scores, but their skating doesn’t really resonate for me, so I’m more excited about some of the other pairs. Honestly though, Miura/Kihara on top of the podium is my big wish, and I think that it’s pretty likely to happen.
Ice Dance
Predicted Podium
Piper Gilles / Paul Poirier CAN
Charlene Guinard / Marco Fabbri ITA
Madison Chock / Evan Bates USA
Honestly, other than Gilles/Poirier having a great season so far, there’s not a lot in the scores between teams. There could easily be a lot of surprises in this podium (and Gilles/Poirier aren’t so far ahead that a single major mistake couldn’t shake things up). It’s interesting for sure! There’s only one team here that I think doesn’t have a huge shot for the podium (Hawayek/Baker, even though they’re one of my favorites here), and even for them, it’s not out of reach necessarily.
Dream Podium
Charlene Guinard / Marco Fabbri ITA
Piler Gilles / Paul Poirier CAN
Kaitlin Hawayek / Jean-Luc Baker USA
My biggest wish is honestly for a 3 country podium! I’d be pretty happy with any arrangement of skaters that gives me that, and I think that there’s a pretty good chance at us getting it (a 2 CAN team podium is probably the biggest possibility between us and that). There aren’t any teams here that I dislike, and I want to see everyone skate their best. I’d love to see Guinard/Fabbri win though because I’ve really enjoyed their skating for a long time, and it’s great to see them doing really well this season!
Junior Men
Predicted Podium
Takeru Amine Kataise JPN
Nikolaj Memola ITA
Robert Yampolsky USA
One of the things about Juniors is that they are dramatically unpredictable. I am not confident at all in this prediction, though this podium in some order wouldn’t surprise me based on their skating and scores so far this season.
Dream Podium
Takeru Amine Kataise JPN
Nikolaj Memola ITA
Shunske Nakamura JPN
Honestly, that first place for Takeru is the one that I really care about; his skating is beautiful, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it! None of the others here were people who hugely stood out to me. I’m putting Shunske in third for my dream podium because he’s the only person here other thank Takeru and Nikolaj whose programs I actually remember watching (even though I know I’ve watched all of them at least once this season).
Junior Women
Predicted Podium
Mao Shimada JPN
Hana Yoshida JPN
Shin Jia KOR
Third seems to be wide open, and no one here is unbeatable, though if Mao Shimada skates her full content, she’s going be very hard to beat. I really liked all of these skaters on the JGP circuit this year, and I think that it will be interesting to see how they progress, especially getting a little longer to spend in Juniors.
Dream Podium
Mao Shimada JPN
Shin Jia KOR
Kwon Minsol KOR
I picked my favorite programs of the set. There’s not that much chance of Minsol making the podium, but she is such a joy to watch, and really what I love about watching juniors (the fun of it, the joy and exuberance of skating that so rarely makes to the senior circuit). Mao’s got a lot of that too, and I am looking forward to both of them so much as they develop as skaters over the next few years. I like ever single skater here though, and I’m not going to be disappointed with just about any podium arrangement.
Junior Pairs
Predicted Podium
Anastasia Golubeva / Hektor Giotopoulus Moore AUS
Sophia Baram / Daniel Tiomentsev USA
Violetta Sierova / Ivan Khobta UKR
Based on scores so far this season, it is very likely going to be these three teams in this order. This is a place where there’s a pretty wide spread of scores qualifying, but also juniors can be extremely unpredictable. Did someone have a growth spurt? That could throw things off immensely? They’re also developing and growing fast, so we could see a huge tech jump from one of the teams that has been scoring lower. This is part of the fun of juniors.
Dream Podium
I’m just going to leave it open here. If there aren’t any major tech leaps, I probably would have it with my predicted podium just because I want everyone to skate well, and that’s probably what it will be if there are no major tech changes and everyone skates clean. I would love to see Sierova/Khobta have the tech jump to put them in first because they’re probably my favorites in this field!
Junior Ice Dance
Predicted Podium
Katerina Mrazkova / Daniel Mrazek CZE
Nadiia Bashynka / Peter Beaumont CAN
Hannah Lim / Ye Quan KOR
This, like pairs, is a field with a pretty wide point spread. Unless there are major tech improvements or someone makes major errors, I expect that one and two will be between Mrazkova/Mrazek and Bashynka/Beaumont. Third is more wide open, but this is juniors, juniors are unpredictable.
Dream Podium
Like with pairs, I’m leaving this open. I like all of the teams on my predicted podium, and I want to see everyone skate clean. It’s always exciting to see juniors with tech breakthroughs though, so it would be cool to see someone place higher than I’m expecting with everyone skating clean.

Japanese Dream Ice Gala Varese, August 15th 2024
I'm so glad my boyfriend convinced me of going there (don't get me wrong, I'm the FS fan, he is not :D I just wasn't sure about traveling). It was a beautiful evening. It was VERY cold at that rink, while it was VERY VERY warm outside...going out in winter shoes when it's 30 °C is an unusual experience :D
But like I said, it was so worth it. This was my very first skating event with "big names", if you know what I mean. And there were so many of them! Mai, Mone, Hana, Kaori, Shun, Sota, Yuma, Kao and RikuRyu, as well as Utana Yoshida/Masaya Morita, who were not announced beforehand. And some of the Italians were there too: Matteo Rizzo, Ginevra Negrello, Ghilardi/Ambrosini and Guignard/Fabbri. I was so happy to see Mai that I almost cried, and the same happened when Kaori skated. The Italians skated to Italian songs, but the Japanese showed their new programs, most of them their SPs. Mone did her free skate, and Kao might have done an exhibition program (it was Imagine Dragons, which is neither his SP nor his FS). Ryuichi slipped and fell once, and Kaori popped EVERY. SINGLE. JUMP. The one time I get to see her and she doesn't do her 2A :-( But I still love her.
Now I'm even more hyped for Nebelhorn Trophy in a month...can't wait for entries being announced probably next week! MiNiki and Olga will be there, so that's a good start :D
