Found this funky church in Harlem on 135th street. In 1915 it opened as a first theater for black audiences in then predominately white Harlem. Later it was turned into a cinema and then finally to a church. Now it awaits demolition and will be replaced by an apartment tower (with a space for the church on the ground floor.

"RICHARD ALLEN"
by Nomo
One of the nation's most influential black leaders, minister, educator, writer and former slave Richard Allen taught himself to read and write and in 1794 founded the African Church in Philadelphia. In 1816 Allen united five African American congregations of the Methodist Church, founding the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) and In July, 2016 the city and Philadelphia's @MuralArts program celebrated the bicentennial with this stunning new Willis Humphrey, aka Nomo, mural on N 38th St at the First Episcopal District Headquarters. A beloved muralist and one of the city's leading portrait artists, Philadelphia was shocked to hear of Nomo's passing two years later from a heart attack. Nomo was only 44 and the father of three teens and he leaves behind an impressive body of work reflecting a stylistic diversity matched by few.  @willisnomo/

#mosesdickson #knightsofliberty #soldier #minister #liberator #barber #lincolnuniversity #amechurch #undergroundrailroad Moses Dickson was born free in Cincinnati April 5, 1824. As a teen he traveled through the South as a barber and saw the conditions of his people and it lit a fire within. He became a man of several hats. In 1846 he and twelve other men in St. Louis formed a secret organization called the Knights of Liberty. Their core mission was to end slavery by insurrection. They had a plan that ten years from the time that they first formed, they would strike and start their war. By 1856 they had over 47,000 men throughout the southern states that were ready to go to war. They took an oath of secrecy, "I can die, but I can not reveal the name of any member until the slaves are free." In August 1856 they created a smaller organization called the Order of Twelve in Galena, Illinois. They would train secretly at night preparing for warfare. In 1857 they were ready to march. They were going to hit Atlanta and they expected to have nearly 200,000 men. Their plan came to a halt because relations between the North and the South were becoming strained. So they decided to wait. Dickson also had a talk with John Brown before his raid on Harper's Ferry October 16, 1859. He told Brown it was too early. Brown's raid threw the Knights plans off also. Dickson went on to join the AME church in 1866 and became an ordained minister. The AME church was notorious for its early militancy and willingness to use the gun when needed. In 1866 he had a hand in Lincoln Institute getting started, which now goes by Lincoln University in Missouri. In 1871 Moses became the Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons in Missouri. In 1872 he also organized the International Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor, who were all about self sufficiency. The illustration of Moses Dickson is from the 1879 book A Manual of the Knights of Tabor and Daughters of the Tabernacle. https://www.instagram.com/p/BylAKsPhbLu/?igshid=1q1ismhvk9p93

I'm issuing this #ShutItDownDC Challenge to my friends & neighbors across the US! Don't get distracted or discouraged by the displays of hatred in #DC this weekend. Whether you attend a counterprotest, steer clear of downtown, or live in a different time zone, here's something we can all do. Focus on what you want more than you give your attention & energy to what you don't want. Talk about the things that matter & move us ahead together toward A More Perfect Union. I'm challenging you to JOIN AME Voter-ALERT (V-ALERT), the Voter Education, Mobilization, and Education Project by the AME Church Connectional Lay Organization. AME V-ALERT is creating networks that include local congregations and engaged community partners to encourage eligible voters to #vote! Stand tall and ensure every member of your community gets out and votes this November! There is too much at stake to take this lightly, or to get caught up debating narratives that don't move us forward. You don't need to be an #AME member to JOIN AME V-ALERT TEAM! Get connected to trainings, resources and support as you plan your voter mobilization activities this election season. Join now & download this free toolkit at http://www.amev-alert.org Your challenge is to: 1. Join V-Alert today & post your city here in the comments! 2. If you're already a V-Alert member, tag 2 friends & challenge them to join us. 3. Share this message & let's make this a day of collective power & inspired action 💜 My goal is to find 10 new V-Alert members today, so please don't forget to post if you're one of my 10! 👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑 #IAmAME #MidTermElections #SpeakLIFE #GRATITUDE #SpreadLOVE #PositiveVibes #SelfTalk #Empowerment #Motivation #UnspeakableJOY #Wisdom #PositiveEnergy #AMEChurch #VotingRights #CivicEngagement #SoulPowerCoach

@thedayafter2016 - Fanny Jackson Coppin was born enslaved in Washington DC, Oct. 15, 1837. She gained her freedom when her aunt purchased her at age 12. Through her teens years she worked as a servant for the author George Henry Calvert and in 1860 she enrolled at Oberlin College in Ohio. Oberlin College was the first college in the US to accepted both Black and female students. While attending Oberlin Jackson enrolled and excelled in the men’s course of studies. She was elected to the Young Ladies Literary Society and was the first Black student to be appointed in the College’s preparatory department. As the Civil War came to an end she established a night school in Oberlin in order to educate freed slaves. Upon graduation in 1865, Jackson became a high school teacher at the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY) in Philadelphia. She was promoted to principal of the Ladies Department and taught Greek, Latin, and Mathematics. In 1869 she became principal of the entire institute, making her the first Black woman to receive the title of school principal. She was the first Black woman to head an institution of higher learning and she remained there until her retirement in 1906. Jackson founded homes for working and poor women, and she was an influential columnist who defended the rights of women and Blacks in local Philadelphia newspapers. She added missionary work to her long list of accomplishments when she married Rev. Levi Jenkins Coppin, a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in 1881. In 1902 the couple went to South Africa and founded the Bethel Institute, a missionary school which emphasized self-help programs. Coppin returned to Philadelphia because of declining health. She died in Jan. 1913. In 1926, a Baltimore, MD teacher training school was named the Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School in her memory. It is now Coppin State University. #fannyjacksoncoppin #coppinstate #oberlincollege #amechurch #notsolongago #nsla - #HowYouLivin #RoyaltyPromotions #philadelphia #phillyhistory
