This Day in History: The Fifteenth Amendment
On this day in 1870, Iowa ratifies the Fifteenth Amendment, thus ensuring that all men can vote, regardless of race. Women were not included in the Amendment, although many had been lobbying for equal suffrage for years.
The changes came in the wake of the Civil War.
Obviously, the country was very divided in those years. States that had been part of the Confederacy were not admitted back into the Union right away: No state could be readmitted unless it first ratified the Fourteenth Amendment and granted equal suffrage to black men within its own borders.
Interestingly, such demands were a one-way street. Many of the northern states weren’t bothering to abide by the principles being imposed on the South.

What Are Soil Amendments?
Soil amendments are products added to the soil to improve soil’s physical, chemical, or biological properties. Some of these properties that amendments are used for include increasing soil fertility or water-holding capacity and decreasing compaction or erosion. Soil amendment differs from fertilizer by modifying the condition of the soil itself, whereas fertilizer adds nutrients to the soil.
There are also 2 general categories that soil amendments fall under: organic and inorganic.
Organic soil amendments are composed of materials that were previously living matter. In contrast, inorganic amendments are made of mined or artificially created materials.

Some organic materials used in soil amendments include:
Wood chips
Grass clippings
Compost
Manure
Sawdust
A few examples of inorganic materials include:
Lime
Gypsum
Rock powders
When Should Soil Amendment Be Used?
One reason to use soil amendments is to alter the soil’s pH. The soil’s pH level needs to be within a specific range to give plants adequate access to nutrients. For example, some plants prefer more acidic soil, while others thrive in more alkaline soil. You will need to have a plant health care specialist test your soil to determine its current pH and what treatment is required to help your plants’ health.
Regarding the time of year, soil amendments can be applied at any time, but the ideal times are early spring or late fall. This is because soil amendments are more easily incorporated when the soil is bare and dry. If you apply them in the spring, they will be more effective at helping your plants grow because you will be fertilizing your plants and improving the soil. When soil amendments are applied in the fall, they will have time over winter to break down and become part of the soil before you plant again in spring. The types of soil amendments used also differ depending on the season.
Spring Soil Amendment
During spring, we recommend a potassium-only fertilizer with the necessary nutrients. This helps improve the plant’s resistance to stress factors such as disease pressure, extreme temperature fluctuations, and drought conditions. In addition, this systemic nutrient formulation stimulates health and vigor without triggering excess physical growth.
Fall Soil Amendment
During the fall, plants absorb and store nutrients for the initial spring growth period. As a result, supplying the nutrients often lacking in landscape soils is vital. We fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to ensure the availability of essential macro and micronutrients. This amendment also gives plants and trees the sustenance necessary for healthy growth and resistance to insects, disease, and harsh environmental conditions.
Benefits of Soil Amendment
One of the benefits is restoring your soil’s pH balance. If the pH balance of the soil is too high or low, certain nutrients (potassium, nitrogen, and other elements) become more difficult or less available for plants to absorb, which can negatively impact the health of the plants. As a result, plant health care experts will use soil amendments to modify the soil’s pH balance.
Some of the other benefits of soil amendments include the following:
Organic materials in soil amendments help encourage plant growth.
Soil amendments help improve aeration, prevent soil compaction, allow air to flow more freely, and improve the soil’s drainage.
Organic soil amendments can improve certain soils by improving the soil’s ability to store nutrients and water.

My best friend in North Carolina is a gay Christian.
She has recently been disowned from her parents.
She pays for her own college education.
She had to reconcile her religion with her love. That's a breaking sentence.
She has never been anything less than amazingly brave.
Tonight, she decorated her school stuff with rainbows. She used to be the girl in high school everyone would think was the straightest, most Christian, most prudish girl at the school. Tonight, she's brave, and full of love.
I just want to say that I'm really, really proud of my best friend.

This Day in History: The 23rd Amendment
On this day in 1964, residents of Washington D.C. cast votes in the presidential election. While such an event might sound routine, the 1964 election was anything but. The 23rd Amendment had just been ratified, giving the District of Columbia votes in the Electoral College for the first time.
Yes, you read that correctly. Our nation was then nearly 200 years old, yet residents of D.C. had never voted in a presidential election.
There’s a simple reason.
Our nation’s capital is not a state, and original constitutional provisions didn’t treat it as one for purposes of presidential elections. But did you ever think about why the Constitution doesn’t make Washington, D.C. a state?
Some today are pushing to change that situation and to make D.C. a state after all. Thus, the historical background and logic behind the Founders’ decision is relevant as Americans consider what to do.

I would just like to go ahead and state that the fact that North Carolina passed Amendment One reflects the hideous nature of people who are too ignorant to open their mind to other people's situations.  If you do not approve of gay marriage, then don't marry a gay person.  Don't strip someone's right to marry simply because you have decided to shield your own beliefs with what you believe Christianity is meant to teach.  If you think that being hateful makes you a Christian you are highly mistaken.
Southern and Christian are not synonyms for ignorant, so when you choose to defend your belief that gays shouldn't marry, attempt to do it without using those two words. Then what are you left with?

It's going to be a long day....
Up at 5:45, sitting outside of the polls for 5 hours, then back outside until volunteering hours tomorrow. This cannot pass. And if it does, I know it won't be for lack of trying to stop it from hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people. Vote Against. I implore you all, any North Carolinian who is listening.

Just received an email from Chelsea Clinton. Apparently she takes after Hil and is a boss too.
"You may ask why I am joining with you to defeat an amendment that would not harm my family as Marc and I are married under a traditional definition.  Well, the answer is simple. When a measure as unfair, poorly worded, and harmful as Amendment One is offered up on a ballot, none of us can afford to be silent."
