The Federal Reserve against Steablecoin

Michael Barr, the head of the US Federal Reserve, became concerned about the lack of American control over the Steablecoins. In his view, they pose a serious threat to the American financial system.

Is it possible to control such tools? If they were all on the territory of the United States – you can do it. However outside of American jurisdiction everything is very complicated.

If Steablecoin is backed by a dollar, it’s by nature a receipt - an obligation. The secured Steablecoin should not affect the financial system, as the sum of steablecoins is exactly the sum of the deposited dollars. The dollar is in the account, and instead, a receipt is issued.

But with an unsecured steablecoin becomes more and more difficult. The dollar itself is not secured, but is held solely by the authority of America. What would a Stablecoin like that stick to?

The authority of the cryptocurrency is held exclusively by public opinion. Really Mr. Barr that there will be a cryptocurrency that can override the authority of the US. In this case, one should fight not to control the Steablecoins, but to strengthen one’s own financial system.

Control itself is also complicated. How can you control a decentralized blockchain? Imagine all the employees leaving the States, and how to hunt them? File an international manhunt? Kidnap? In theory, anything is possible, but in reality, it is only theory.

Barr’s words showed a serious symptom of the American economy - uncertainty. Who would have thought, a decade ago, that the threat would be perceived by some unsecured dollar surrogates?

This is yet another sign of a changing world. I am sure that Mr. Barr is well aware, and his statement is not about a threat to the economy, but about the desire to gain access to new financial flows.
