Moon Knight: City of the Dead #4 by David Pepose and Marcelo Ferreira. Variant covers by (1) Aka and (2) David Marquez. Out in October.
"Nothing is more feared in the City of the Dead than the ancient crocodile goddess known as AMMUT THE DEVOURER. Unfortunately for Marc Spector, he is currently being digested inside Ammut’s belly, memory by memory. Can Moon Knight survive the weight of his own horrific past, or will the JACKAL KNIGHT rule triumphant across the realms of both the living and the dead? All hope may be lost… That is unless the SCARLET SCARAB has anything to say about it!"

The ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife system, where the body and soul were separated and judged in the Hall of the Two Truths by the god Osiris, the lord of the underworld.
This judgment was based on the heart of the deceased, which was weighed against the feather of Maat, the goddess of justice and balance. If the heart was pure, the deceased would achieve eternal peace in the afterlife, but if it was heavy with wrongdoing, the heart would be devoured by the monster Ammut, resulting in eternal death.

Thinking about Mummies Alive again and that if the show was more true to ancient Egyptian mythology then Scarab would have run afoul pretty much the entire pantheon by killing Rapses.
Like...so many of the gods were devoted to protecting the Pharaoh, and cosmic balance was also a big thing in their cosmology. So I feel that Scarab’s whole “oh I’m going to murder the son of the man with the largest and most blatant amount of divine favor--who would have inherited that same favor--and use his soul to cheat death” scheme would have spat in the face of what the pantheon stood for.
Also, for a guy who’s utterly terrified of dying, I find it hilarious that he regularly allowed Ammut, the Devourer of Evil Souls, to just chill in his house on the regular. Honestly, any underworld deity would probably want a piece of Scarab, especially any that were particularly concerned with tombs and the desecration of the dead.
You know that Anubis once flayed Set and wore his skin as punishment for trying to desecrate Osiris’s body further, right? And Bes was a guardian of children? Scarab’s ass would have been grass.

Jackson's Daily Bestiary #9: Ammit
Tumblr media
Region of Origin: Egypt
Ammit, also known as Ammut, or Ahemait, was a monstrous creature from egyptian mythology. Her body was an amalgamation of the three largest man-eating animals in Egypt; she had the head of a crocodile, the body of a lion and the hind legs of a hippo.
Ammit lived in the Egyptian underworld of Duat and sat at the feet of the scribe Thoth during the Judgement of the Dead. Anubis would place a heart and the Feather of Truth (which symbolized the goddess Maat) on a weight. If the feather was heavier than the heart, the soul would be deemed pure and allowed to proceed. However, if the heart was heavier than the feather, then the person was deemed to be wicked and unfit to advancing any further.
If this was the case, Ammit would devour the soul, preventing them from advancing any further into the underworld. Because of this, she was also known as the Devourer of the Dead. While some classify her as a goddess, her role is more akin to a demon or monster representative of execution rather than an actual goddess.

He just didn't get it. He snuck into the palace much like a shadow, crept to the pharaoh's chambers and woke him up in the dead of night to take him hostage. And he... just went with it. Not a word, not a complaint, nothing. It was so... unexpected. He just... took it. Hell, he'd swear up and down that he was helping him with this brazen crime. Everyone expected him to do something like bursting into the catacombs and robbing anything not nailed down, not steal the pharaoh himself from his own palace in the silence of the night. The self-proclaimed King of Thieves had suspiciously found not much in his way when he made his escape. It was... odd. His comrades stared in stunned silence when he returned, dawn's light trailing behind him with the greatest prize of all slung over the back of his horse. They cheered, they drew their weapons to kill him then and there, but the mighty King of Thieves hadn't let them. It could be a trap, after all. He was certain it was.
But in the week he's been there, he's been so... cooperative? Took off his jewelry and gave it to him to sell for food. Looked at his surroundings in such wonder when they left in the first place. He couldn't help but constantly eye him with suspicion every time he passed him by, every time he tried to get a confession out of him that there was something lying in wait. He spoke to his ka about it in private, curled up in its gentle embrace with his arms around the serpent that meant so much to him. Even if 'private' was as far away as he could get in the same cave. But tonight? This was the night he was going to get his straight answer. He had given all the food he could collect to his beloved ka; he'll eat the scraps when he's finished. Even if it looked at him with such concern and nudged the food back his way every time he offered it. But, to make its master happy, it always obliged in the end.
"You." The Thief King shook the other rather harshly; just in case he was asleep. Couldn't tell in this light and it was dark as it was. Couldn't risk lighting something and giving away their position with such a high-profile hostage. "I don't know who you think you're fooling, but I've had it with your games." He leaned over the pharaoh, to put up as intimidating a presence as possible. "I'm not going to fall for whatever silly little trap you set for me. You're going to pay for what you did to my people, pharaoh. Their blood is on your hands, but I'll let you see the sun rise one last time before Ammut devours your wretched soul if you answer one little thing for me."
