I am developing some theories as to what qualities make for good and bad children's educational television. (At least when it comes to shows that try to weave the educational material into the story.)

Good children's television is timeless. Technology or current events can be part of the story, but should not be the focus of it. The technology should be there to facilitate a story that's actually about a timeless lesson that can apply to children in any time period.

Bad children's television is timely or trendy. It makes learning about the new technology or trends the focus of the story. This makes for clunky storytelling that applies only to a narrow set of circumstances and becomes very quickly dated.

Good children's television puts story first. The story needs to come from character and be entertaining, and the educational content should flow naturally from that story.

Bad children's television thinks the educational material is the story. It preaches the information to the children so that it becomes adults giving information to children rather than adults engaging with children on their level.

Good children's television lets the child characters learn lessons for themselves. Adults can provide inspiration or help, but the children should take initiative for their own discoveries and come to conclusions based on their experiences.

Bad children's television has the adults tell the children all the lessons and information they should learn. The children are only there as stand-ins for an audience that the writer wants to preach this information to and passively absorb the lessons rather than taking an active role in their own story.

#yes this is about arthur and curious george #i have examples of all of these from both shows but i have refrained out of compassion toward you #joe fallon's involvement explains the excellent early seasons of both #i could tell there'd been a regime change later on in curious george #and when i saw peter hirsch credited as head writer after an inferior episode everything made sense #unfair that he should get to ruin two good shows #(to be fair some of the most painful later curious george eps were ones that i didn't see his name involved with)#(i did see sherri stoner as story editor which was painful)#(slappy squirrel i thought you were better than this)#but whoever's involved the principles are true and seeing the same thing happen in both shows makes it very obvious #arthur #curious george

Man I love Omori and Steven Universe, on tge first watch/playthrough it’s all fun and games but on the second time around you see that foreshadowing is everywhere and it feels like being stabbed. No other piece of media does it like them.

#steven universe #omori #su #omori has an excellent plot twist that I feel bad talking about because there’s nothing like a blind playthrough #but steven universe I’m ok with discussing so uh #su spoilers #it’s not pink diamond I’m talking about it’s steven’s trauma #every time he gets hurt is another fracture line in future #every time he offers to help someone is another moment of anxiety later #and you’re powerless to stop him from hurting himself because it’s already done #the story is over #no matter how many times you rewatch again and again it will go down the same #steven will be an innocent little kid who just wants to help out the gems #only for episodes like the test to roll around and you see him taking on the role of family therapist when he’s literally just a kid #and empire city was once an episode of a kid bringing his two caretakers on vacation because he loves them and wants to spend time together #but now it’s an episode of a boy trying to fix problems he shouldn’t have to worry about because he Solves Problems #and it’s just…#he’s hurting himself and there’s nothing I can do #and there’s nothing the people around him would do anyway because he’s Steven and Steven Loves To Help #so why would they #and in the end #Steven gets hurt #and the story doesn’t change

fave underrated moment in ep6 is when dream leaving his meeting with death feeling inspired to engage with humanity and attempts this by nodding toward a random man exiting a shop with takeaway who lurches away from him in fear and suspicion and dream doesn't say 'hullo' or 'alright mate?' but returns instantly to frowning into middle distance while barging through a group of schoolchildren and doubtlessly thinking 'i'm not trying that again for at least another century wtf'

i will say i am extremely glad we got the ghouls vs goblins back and forth in this podcast ep because it's SUCH a good look inside glenn and charlie's ideas/writing process, and it was. silly 😋

#the always sunny podcast #glenn howerton #charlie day #ada speaks #i was smiling through p much the entire pod tbh but #there is something v special about glenn and charlie eps and i think this is why #also i feel like whenever dennis and charlie hang out dennis feels more like glenn #because that back and forth would not have been ooc for their characters at all #glennis genuinely intrigued by charlie's weirdly compelling little......... things he comes up with #the little bit of improv about magnets was good too dhsjbdjf #like somehow explaining it even more was funnier than in the episode #bc charlie's thought process is so funny #leaving it at. just magnets. is funny but the rest of it really got me #i think the two of them really excel at writing sort of mundane banter #like what theyre talking about doesn't even have to be particularly exciting #but its so snappy and fun i love that shit more than anything
