Words borrowed from other languages in English
Very incomplete list, based mostly on The Languages of the World (3rd ed.), Kenneth Katzner, 2002 + a heavy use of Wiktionary. some notes:
Many of these words have passed through multiple languages on their way to English (e.g. Persian -> Arabic -> Spanish -> French -> English); in that case I usually list them under the first language that used them in the same acception as English.
I generally don't include words whose ancestors already existed in Middle English, unless their origin was exotic enough to be interesting.
The vast majority of borrowings are terms very specific to their culture of origin; I generally only include those that are either very well known amng English-speakers, or of general use outside that culture.

Do you guys know that riddle going around about the eggs??
Well if not, it goes something like this:
"I have SIX EGGS. I cracked TWO, I fried TWO, and I ate TWO... How many eggs are there left?"
Now, I hope everyone is paying attention because I have developed a visual example of this word problem.
Tumblr media
It starts with a half-dozen of eggs, in their carton...
Take two (as indicated by the circled portion of the carton) and crack them into a frying pan...
Now, you can't fry an egg with the shell ON and your pan already has some in it, right? So, you would fry the eggs you cracked earlier.
Why would you try to eat a whole, raw egg, let alone two? What do you think you are, a snake? You JUST fried two perfectly good eggs and you think you should go anaconda on the ones left in the fridge? Eat the fried eggs! You wouldn't bake cookies and then turn around and spoon raw flour into your mouth, would you?
Now, look back at the carton... How many eggs are NOT circled?? That's the answer.
I was so frustrated trying to explain this to my "stepdad???" that I had to draw the problem out to ensure that I'm not going insane....
He has yet to see it but I'm going to find someplace where he has no choice but to see it.

🙃 What’s a weird fact that you know? (adding this from the second one u sent 🙈)
Before land plants were like, a thing, there wasn't any soil on Earth, and some of the first plants to colonize above-water areas were mosses/liverworts and low-growing shit like that, and those slowly broke down rocks to make way for later colonization. Also, massive fungal(?) towers called prototaxites were some of the earliest land life they looked like this

Demon-Tooth does seem to have a moment of doubt about this other woman, curling around to giver her the stink eye but she watches the interaction carefully and seems to decide that if Zach is helping the lady on, then she is at least tolerable for the duration.
Cookie doesn't seem to pay any of it no never mind, except the hang on tight command, which she clearly seems to think wasn't given soon enough.
Demon-Tooth, tired as she is, seems anxious to blow off some steam and leaps to obey the command to run, bursting out of the ranch like it's ambush cover and her prey has a good lead she needs to make up. And the faster she goes the more she leans into it, her weight and height making her barrel over the ground faster than any Rex Zach has been astride before. Feels like near fast as an Iron Rex down the track. She might not take a top three spot in one of the great racing crowns that royalty race in every year but she's fast enough to run down a demon and get away with a limb.
Cookie has squeezed so tight to Zach that he's pretty darn sure that she isn't too fond of Rex riding, he ain't so sure she's providing that extra eye - he wouldn't be much surprised if she had her eyes squeezed tight, and she has enough muscles to win a wrist-wrassle with an anaconda.
Please make an Assess draw (2) with a bonus of 4, so 11 cards altogether, and let me know what you get according to this chart. Let me know the cards as well as they can matter in this draw.

Also, I willing want to make Brody Blue to see how to get along with Yandel Yellow. Cindy Cyan I particularly persuading some other genders like boys and girls. I have to keep reminding myself that I have already done a LOT this year:
✨️ Attended Carnival of Karactors to watch MushroomxHead perform.
✨️ Took Vader to a professional photoshoot for Spotlight & Anaconda.
✨️ Performed two routines at Carnival of Karactors myself (Happy Meal and Dragula)
✨️ Attended the Elemental Aerial Valentine's Showcase.
✨️ Saw Puss in Boots The Last Wish at an outside 'Under the Stars' cinema.
✨️ Went to and signed up for my local library.
✨️ Baked muffins and cookies, pickled my own chillis.
✨️ Went to a friend's birthday lunch.
✨️ Continued to make progress in aerial hoop classes and set up our own aerial rig.
✨️ Attended a MCR concert!!!
✨️ Rehearsals and performance for Everything's A Drag as Pennywise the clown.
✨️ Have read 12 books and got my passion for stories back.
And it's only March! 🤯
Sometimes it's necessary to step back and look at the whole picture, I'm so prone to jumping from project to project, goal to goal, that I don't take a moment to be proud of anything because I'm always so focused on The Next Thing.
Right now I'm taking a moment.
And this isn't even everything, just some of the bigger things!
This is your reminder to take a moment to be proud of yourself and acknowledge your achievements - even the small ones.
✨️AND ANOTHER THING:
An achievement is an achievement.
Crying does not negate an achievement.
Needing recovery time afterwards does not negate an achievement.
A lack of likes/comments/views does not negate an achievement.
Not doing something perfectly does not negate an achievement.
None of these things ruin or undo what you /have done/.
You have done things and they have worth, let yourself celebrate that without diminishing it!
This is just as much a reminder to myself as everyone else.

15 Questions | 15 people
Rules: Answer the 15 questions, then tag 15 people.
Thanks for the tag @theresthesnitch !
1. Are you named after anyone? No: my parents gave me a “weird” name for the 80′s - now it’s fairly popular - so I spent all my vacations not finding my name on the touristy keychains with the names on it.... a true villain origin story, I know
2. When was the last time you cried? This morning at therapy! I hadn’t gone in over a year and yeah...
3. Do you have kids? Yes! I have one, chancho or crapaud depending on the general mood...
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? I was raised with a lot LOT of sarcasm so I do and I’m pretty fluent in it... Actually trying to break the habit: sarcasm is awesome but NOT a good parenting or educational tool!
5. What is the first thing you notice about people? Honestly it depends: I’m a drawer so I tend to notice funny/weird/interesting visual things about people.
6. What color are your eyes? Brown....ish? Hazel? I don’t know how colors work in english can I answer with a Pantone?
7. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings! Please please tell me everything is gonna be ok
8. Any special talents? Euh..... Does reading smut counts?
9. Where were you born? Hospital, in the town I still live in after moving for studies and travelling after
10. What are your hobbies? I like to bake christmas cookies and doing projects; right now I have to do an Anaconda costume for chancho’s carnival next week! Also I’m supposed to be finishing my work for @hpknotfest don’t worry Snitch it’s on the agenda I already have a title that’s the hardest right? Right?
11. Do you have any pets? No I keep pestering my parent’s cat when I visit I miss having a pet!
12. What sports do you play/have you played? I DO NOT like sports, like, really not.... but I’ve been running one or two times a week for a year and it’s been really great for my general health. I absolutely love to swimm but not possible right now with my schedule and how much I DO NOT want to shave my legs
13. How tall are you? So short I heard one of my student tell her friend “wait, the teacher’s actually really short” the other day... kids are cruel
14. Favorite subject in school? ART!
15. Dream job? Haven’t invented it yet! I really like my work in education but I’d like to mix it up a bit...
Okay so for the tags: I don’t know 15 people here! So @krethes if you haven’t done this one yet? No pressure
