“If we really were in love you wouldn’t have missed” hits harder when you remember that goncharov shot andrey after he made him promise to if they got caught back in their younger days. Goncharov looking into his eyes and shooting him, not knowing if he’d live, was his way of saying I love you in the only way he knew how.
Comparatively, andrey killing both himself and goncharov at the end, after everything that they’d been through, was his way of finally saying “I love you too”
Just like andrey said, “death is the ultimate form of devotion”

Goncharov: I think we should kiss. Andrey: And I think you should die but we don’t always get what we want.

a god in his mind
"there's a bubble in time—sometime past the near-death by a train—that may only exist within the most covert memories of two men, drowned by their own misguided betrayal. (extended bit after the train scene)."
goncharov/andrey, 770 words, not rated but there's not really any violence or otherwise explicit content.
“Were you trying to kill yourself, you fucking coward?”
There’s no more bite left to Andrey’s words, only a soft puff of breath that whispers against the bristles that line Goncharov’s mouth: Goncharov caught a glance of Andrey’s expression as the air had been knocked from his chest—an ounce of panic, an ounce of weakness to which the traitor would never admit—but any anger that remained sapped away from Andrey’s body as they lay chest-to-chest, the steam train whirring past their heels like a roaring current. Their breaths had slowed—synched, perhaps distantly longing to be the same entity—but not once had Andrey’s gaze strayed to the piercing stare of the man—only a man, perhaps nothing more—beneath him, fixated stubbornly on the darkness at their side.
“Look me in the eye, and then call me a coward.”

People saying that Katya and Goncharov didn't love each other are missing the WHOLE POINT of their relationship and why it's the focal point of the movie. The two loved each other deeply and desperately, they went through so much together, Goncharov was the first person to tell Katya she could be the woman she knew she was, and Katya saved Goncharov from himself after his father died. Their love was ultimately their poison, corrupted by the neverending cycle of violence and betrayal their paths took them. Have we fuckin watched the same tango scene? Go watch that again and tell me it is not a conflicting but absolutely real love, I dare you. To the bitter end in that clock tower, when they faced the consequences of the lives they led, they still loved each other so dearly. That's what makes their relationship so heartbreaking.
