[enters IMGflip] [emerges 3 hours later with Goncharov (1973) and The Goncharov Trilogy book series memes] Please appreciate what I do for you with nothing more than a vague recollection from reading the books as a teenager and only recently finding out there was an entire movie made from them, apparently.

@sword-of-stardust ‘s post about how Andrey didn’t miss got me thinking about that ending. They could have had it all but they ran out of time.

POV: you just insisted the Goncharov and Andrey were not actually deeply in love with each other.

listen maybe I’m reading to much into it but towards the start of the film when goncharov and katya are having their argument where they’re both still refusing to be anything but pleasant with each other despite both knowing that their marriage is falling apart, goncharov pours her a glass of red wine and she leaves it untouched
and then the next time we see andrey after the interrogation he’s drinking a glass of red wine
when I tell you I was
Tumblr media
about the fucking symbolism of that

Toxic Sludge Yaoi Tournament: Goncharov/Andrey (Goncharov) Vs Kawoshin (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(No image provided for Goncharov/Andrey. Vote for whichever ship you like more.)
Propaganda under cut. Note: spoilers for these medias may be below.
Goncharov/Andrey propaganda
"It's like the original toxic yaoi sludge??????? They're obsessed with eachother but they're literally enemies. It's perfect."
Kawoshin propaganda
"One of the most iconic toxic yaois. They can't both live. Either Kaworu kills Shinji and the rest of humanity, or Shinji kills Kaworu and saves the rest of humanity. Shinji is so thoroughly affected by the loss of Kaworu. He regrets it, he wants to go back and let Kaworu kill him. It's the last straw for Shinji in all honesty."

Ok I know Goncharov and Andrey are supposed to be having this whole “will they, won’t they” thing going on, but like let’s be honest. They definitely fucked like 3 times and we all know after what scenes

Goncharov, to Andrey: "Where does, and I mean this as a compliment, the most fuckable twink I've ever seen in my life get off on telling me how to manage my T level? [Are you] speaking from experience?!"
Andrey:
😳😳😳

listen i love goncharov and andrey of course but why is everyone sleeping on mario and goncharov?? not only they do share canon queer content, but mario has been goncharov's most important person for so long. he provided a safe space for goncharov to express his true feelings that he just could not let slip around katya, he was probably the only person goncharov has ever actually loved after he left andrey behind. the fact he could share his true self and his inner demons only with mario just makes the betrayal twist even more heartbreaking.

I can't save us
based on that one rumour where the script originally had Goncharov and Andrey in a very intense makeout/fight before Andrey commits to the kill

A light flickers, a pocket watch ticks, a heel clicks against cobblestone. The sounds ricochet from wall to wall like bullets.
This alley is a sound chamber.
His cigarette hangs from his mouth- a beat, another- it fizzles away.
A figure approaches.
"Привет, Андрей"
A nod.
"Lo straniero." There is amusment in his voice.
"Андрей." He exhales his name again because he does not know the words. Goncharov knows his fate. He has felt the way it twists him into a clock. He wonders if Dali was onto something. His mustache twitches like a minute hand.
Andrey responds by stepping closer. Here, in this alley, they are protected. It is not often that Goncharov feels safe. He feels they are a pendulum trapped behind glass, he does not know if this is freedom or suffocation.
From Goncharov's front pocket, Andrey pulls out his cigarette tin, steals one for himself. He cups a hand between them, to protect from the slight breeze redirecting into their space. The heads of the cigarettes touch, the ashes that Goncharov had not flicked away tumble to the stone under their feet.
From this close together, a blurry image forms in front of him. The light looks fuzzy and warm on Andrey's face.
He pulls back, inhales.
"I am going to die."
A breath.
"Да," nods his companion into the dark.
Somewhere, a clock tolls.
He does not listen for the time.
