Detroit, Michigan

2018

Bleary eyes cracked open, deep as the Pacific Ocean in winter and blood shot. Waves slowly sliding around the dark room and newspaper covered windows. A sense of dread and panic slowly building as her confusion grew.

"Hey sleepy head." Every hair on her exposed arms stood on end, gooseflesh plaguing every inch of open skin. Automatically trying to move away from the bouncing echo pulled at the tender flesh of her bound wrists. The old rope burning her skin red with irritation.

"Everything's okay. I promise." The warm voice, the loving tone she had forced herself to forget ripping through her ears like claws. Drawing blood and demanding attention. A whimper involuntarily fell from her lips as she continued to pull, more violently now, at her restraints. The chair's back digging into her spine just like she remembered, exactly like she had done her best to erase from her head. But not even the most extreme compartmentalization could save her from this.

"He lied! Our entire lives he lied; how could you side with him?!" The voice was paired with a face now, one so painfully familiar she could feel her stomach wanting to empty it's contents all over her shoes. A boy standing at six feet even with midnight black hair and hazel eyes with thick lashes most girls would be jealous of. Darkness crawling in at the edges of his blurry figure, the edges of his waist and shoulders atomizing and reforming over and over.

An armored body suit the color of pitch clinging to the built muscles he had gotten from training since he was barely a teen. Poison green stripes going down the sides of his suit, with matching gloves and mask. Paying homage to his roots and deciding what side of the story he would be on.

The snarl on his chapped lips causing his nose to flair, something that only happened when he was really upset.

"I'm not taking anyone's side. Please Kyle-" Her voice sounded without her moving her lips as the memory audio played out. Her at the mercy of the past. The chocked sob ripping from her throat silently as she was subjected to her own personal hell.

"I should have known, why would the perfect princess want to go against daddy dearest huh? Even with knowing what kind of person he truly is. God! I'm so stupid." The betrayal rung out and sharp, boiling hot tears ran down her face. Knowing what came next and feeling as if she was suffocating. Her chest filling up with a pressure she associated with holding her breath underwater for too long, burning.

"This is going to hurt."

The pain was indescribable.

Her voice box tearing itself to shreds, blood curdling screams filling the otherwise empty warehouse. Her every atom under his bare fingertips being ripped apart and mixed up into a misty version of herself. Being mixed around, tossed, and put back together without a care.

Sirens wailed, flashing red and blue lights filtering in harshly through the newspaper covered windows.

"You're okay. You're okay. Dad's got you. You're okay."

Marlowe's eyes jerked open; face covered in a sheet of ice cold sweat. Choking on an invisible substance as she shot up and out of the computer chair. Muffled chattering entering her ears as she tripped over her feet and fell back onto the ground. Eyes wide and filled with terror as a black and green figure approached her, hands held out and reaching for her.

No, no, no, no.

The Cosmic Staff ran through the mirage, the intense glow burning her eyes almost as bad as the computer screen had done all night. The living weapon swooped down, nudging their wielder and letting out comforting clicks and shifts of light. With her chest heaving Marlowe shakily grabbed onto the Staff's body with a clammy palm and let them pull her to her feet. The Staff holding most of her weight as her knees shook.

"Thanks Cosmo." She breathed, squeezing the Staff appreciatively. "I can always count on you. Huh?" The Staff let out an indignant sound of agreement. Attuned to her every emotion and thought, just as she was to theirs. 

The mental-emotional link being formed through intense training, time, and trust. "What time is it?" She let out a breath, looking to the screen on the wall that rivaled the flat screen in the living room. Seeing a bright set of numbers displayed in the corner. A groan passing through lips quietly at the early hour, Marlowe just now realizing how raw her throat was.

She had been screaming again.

That hadn't happened in a while. It only seemed like her nightmares were getting worse the farther the Mist got from her. She had been at a disadvantage from the start but this was the farthest she had been from him since the beginning of her man hunt, her bookstore lead being worthless. Leaving her with hours of footage that was almost a week old, of him doing nothing but eating muffins and working on his laptop.

Picking up the overturned computer chair, she set it on its rolling feet and plopped down into the seat. The Staff across her lap, letting out more sounds of comfort.

"Any ideas Cos?" She asked futilely, knowing she had hit another dead end. Her frustration causing the Staff to bite at her and heat up in her hands. "Sue me, Cos. Fuck." Letting the Staff rest in her lap she brought her hands up to her blood shot ocean eyes and rubbed at them, the dark bags underneath big enough to swallow her face whole.

What now?

When Dick answered his phone on his usual morning commute to work, he didn't expect where it would take him. But being a cop, walking onto crime scenes was normal. However, one in a book store – where seemingly nothing was stolen – and with two uniforms in the hospital... it was safe to say this wasn't a normal crime scene for him.

Not in Detroit at least. Gotham? Just another day on the job – an easy day.

"What happened?" His question was clipped and to the point, the officer running point returning the same curt energy.

"Silent alarm was tripped, two officers responded. Called in backup soon after along with a robbery in progress but the offender took them down and fled before back up units could arrive." The Sargent, all grey hair and stocky shoulders, stopped at the mouth of the hallway leading into the part of the store meant only for employees. A dried puddle of blood at his feet, another smaller one down the hallway, outside an open door.

"The officers?" Dick asked, taking in the dried blood.

"The altercation, as far as we can tell, started over here with Officer Greenway after she interrupted whatever they were doing with the computers. Techs are still going through the hard drives back at the precinct." The Sargent walked down the hall to the slightly smaller pool stain, Dick following and taking in every smear of blood, dent in the wall, or scuff on the laminate floor. 

"There was a struggle, the offender took Greenway down. The paramedics rushed her to the hospital, something about brain bleeding. It's not good." A heavy breath of guilt passed through him, the aging man bringing a hand up to his five o'clock shadow. Dick looked back at him from his spot by the open doorway as his spoke again, words muffled by his thick fingers, but still discernable, "I put them on this beat."

"It's not your fault." Dick spoke, eyes softening from the detached air they had, for a split second. But as soon as it happened it was over and he was back to analyzing the scene. "What happened next?"

"Greenway was down, there was a knife wound in Jones's leg. CSU was thinking the offender threw it from here," The Sargent motioned to the pool, turning to the mouth of the hallway with a shake of his head, "Ripped it out on their way out, though Med couldn't tell me if that was before or after they broke two of his ribs and fractured his jaw." Dick, after giving the computers in the room one last glance walked over to stand beside the Sargent. Calculating the distance in his head, his eyebrows shooting up in mild shock.

"Where did the knife land?"

The older policeman looked at Dick like he had a few screws loose but answered anyway, "In his leg... like I just said."

"Where specifically?" Dick clarified, walking over to the larger dried pool of crimson.

"His thigh, I heard one of the EMT's say something about him getting lucky it missed an artery. Lost a decent amount of blood but not enough that it would kill him."

"And they pulled out the knife when they left?" Dick asked, more to himself than anything. Automatically profiling the offender in his head. The mix of aggression and restraint confusing him though. 

"Yeah, Greenway's gun was found next to Jones, so I'm thinking the perp got a hold of it in the struggle. Used it to pistol whip Greenway while she was down." The man's teeth grit together in building rage, "It was found beside Jones, no evidence of it going off though." Dick's head tilted slightly, something not sitting right with him.

"Prints?"

"Wiped clean. I hate it when they're smart."

Possible criminal record.

"Not that smart." He muttered under his breath; the person who did this didn't catch the silent alarm. They were either in a rush or just sloppy, but that didn't mix with the sophisticated aspects he was seeing. 

They were skilled, there was no denying that. A precision knife throw, from twelve feet, solely meant to incapacitate - in the dark no less - was not an easy feat. He would know. On top of the skill that it took to take down two armed police officers, with the force that had been exerted...

Whoever they were, they've had training.That much was clear to him. 

"CSU did find some blood by the wall they believe to be the fucker's who did this. They took samples."

Dick's eyes met the Sargent's, "The offender was hurt?"

"Yeah, Jones was able to get a shot off, GSR on his hands and his gun missing a round confirm that." The Sargent nodded, "We already put out a notice to all the hospitals in the city to look out for GSW's coming into the Emergency rooms."

Trained but borderline incompetent. 

"If they aren't dead already." Dick said and the Sargent scoffed out a humorless laugh. His tired cobalt eyes steeling with malice.

"One can only hope."

Dick forced a tight grin and finished up at the crime scene, the Sargent promising that all the relevant files and evidence would be sent his way. Dick's mind consumed with thoughts about what someone would want with whatever was on the computer of a mom and pop book store.

Food.

Laughter and the bell like clinking of spoons against tea cups mixed with the smell of freshly baked blueberry muffins and croissants. Assaulting her senses.  A Parisian vibe that hit a little too close to home in the set up and soft music playing overhead. The color scheme a calming combination of sage green, crème, and dark brown. The nostalgia bittersweet, with a hurtful aftertaste. Ghosts dancing in front of her eyes as she approached an indoor table.

Four people, two adults – parents with their kids. One of the children distinctly older than the other, a boy and a girl respectively. The mom the odd one out with her mane of ginger locks in a sea of raven black. Even though Marlowe knew it wasn't real, a chill went up her spine. 

"Maybe leave some of the gold medals for the others next time yeah?"

"Oh, leave her alone Jack. We're celebrating remember?"

Marlowe had almost forgotten how much she missed Sadie's - Her mom's - voice. Guilt for ignoring the woman who helped raise her ate at her. Sadie hadn't really done anything to deserve it like her dad had, but for some reason it still hurt to think about her. Bubbly giggles that belonged to her past-self echoed around her head, feeling like sandpaper on skin.

"Miss?" Marlowe's head snapped to the side, where a waitress stood with concern in her eyes. "Is everything okay? Can I get you anything?" Her French accent was a pleasant surprise. And Marlowe automatically responded in the language that had surrounded her almost as much – if not more – than English her whole life.

"Juste en prenant dans l'espace. Cela me rappelle la maison."  Marlowe plastered on a soft grin, sitting at the table and ignoring the hallucination atomizing and leaving the table empty. (Translation: "Just taking in the space. Reminds me of home.")

"Ah! Êtes-vous de France?" The waitress got excited.

"Non. Ville d'Opale. Louisiana. Born and Raised." Whether she knew it or not, a spark of warmth flickered in her ocean eyes. Her smile a little less forced. The waitress recognized the name and nodded, her smile and excitement dimming slightly but not leaving entirely.

Opal City, the well know sister city to New Orleans. It's French ties something the city celebrated just as much as New Orleans did theirs. That wasn't what made the city infamous though.

"Have you ever seen Starman?" The waitress asked quietly, leaning in like they were exchanging a secret. A child like glint in her eye.

Starman, it was a name that left Marlowe with a bitter feeling in her chest. And apparently it showed on her face as well. The waitress – Clementine – instantly becoming more reserved as she leaned back and wet her lips nervously. 

While the dark aura shocked the server, she could see there was a tiredness there. The girl's shoulders sagging, as if the name Starman was the sky and the girl the cursed Titan forced to carry it.

"A couple times." Marlowe forced out and Clementine didn't push the subject. Quickly taking the teen's order – A double espresso and their breakfast special – and disappearing to the kitchen. Marlowe's eyes trailed out the window beside her, glazing over the street, cars, and pedestrians walking by the corner store across the street. Looking to the sky on instinct, as if she would see the signature golden streak. A sight she used to find comfort in, knowing her dad was there watching over her.

 Starman, Jack Knight, her dad, was Opal City's protector once upon a time. Flying around with the Cosmic Staff, welding goggles, and an oil covered black leather duster jacket.

There had been other Starmen before him. Two in fact, neither of which she had met.

The first Starman, her grandfather, Ted. He dressed up as if he was the physical embodiment of Christmas – as in bright red body suit with a gold star on his chest, neon green superhero undies on the outside and everything. The old time photos of him from the forties gave Marlowe some serious second hand embarrassment. But he was the one who created the Staff his successors use to this day, so...

The second Starman was her uncle, David, who took over once her grandfather retired. He donned the obnoxious suit for all of two weeks. Until he died.

Until he was killed.

A final act of revenge by The Mist, Ted's archnemesis that David inherited when he picked up the Staff. Though The Mist hadn't been the one dolling out the bitter pill – the sick fuck made his kids do his dirty work – he made sure it had been swallowed before he himself bit the bullet and went totally senile in his old age. 

The man leaving behind his two children a son and a daughter, Kyle and Nash, to whatever fate had in store for them – which was nothing good considering they're both dead now.

It could be argued that they did more damage than their father ever did to the Knight family, but that was a debate for another time.

David's death wasn't where the feud between the Star people and The Mist had started, not by a mile, but it was a defining moment that irrevocably changed her family's future in ways no one could have predicted. The ripples of the event still able to be seen to this day, with her and the newest iteration of the Star people's number one most wanted.

Halfway through her breakfast, something in the air changed. Approaching sirens could be heard, followed by the pop pop pop of gun fire that made most of the patrons in the café jump and look around. Marlowe's eyes however were glued to the corner store across the street. If you weren't paying attention, you'd miss her exit.

The girl quickly throwing down some cash on the table and taking off out the back exit and into the alley as she shed her jacket and sweatshirt.

TS3, boderderless, new machines and FPS limit!!!

I never knew I would be making this post till few hours back, but until now it wasn’t really much known that sims 3 in windowed mode could be run with FPS limit, which forced a lot of people to run the game in full screen. Recently a friend (find him here) and I discovered how to limit FPS for both 1.67 and 1.69 game versions in windowed mode.

Why is this important?

Well, on newer PC’s, ones with a GPU processing power that can easily render recent games, Sims 3 is expected to run exceedingly well... but because Sims 3 is so poorly designed/optimized on a technical level, there is a problem with that. Sims 3 has no FPS limitation, so on newer cards, FPS can get up to even 1k FPS which is INSANE. Personally I had from 500-700 FPS on loading screens myself. This means that: 1. Your card is being overworked and overheated and will be damaged 2. The in-game micro stutter that happens frequently is because the game constantly has short but extreme peaks in frame rate (from 60 - 600 FPS) This is why it’s desired to FPS limit TS3.exe or TS3W.exe!!!

What does windowed mode have to do with all of this?

It’s possible to limit your game FPS in full screen mode trough your graphic control panel application. Though for me it did not work, a lot of people report it working for them. Until now it wasn’t known that the same could be done for windowed mode, meaning users with high end PC running the game windowed were doomed to experience GPU crashes or even worse component death. Now however, a fix has been discovered.

But why would I want to run windowed then?

In full screen mode, game is rendered way darker, which is why EA just lazily slapped on a brightness filter, which makes the whole game brighter than it actually should be. This also means that screenshots of the game taken in full screen (unless they are taken with in-game screenshot feature, which is lower quality) are practically unusable since they are too dark.

When in full screen, the game goes out of memory faster, especially if you are alt tabbing (switching windows) a lot.

Ok, ok but how do I get rid of borders now?

That’s why this guide is here. For that you will need a third party borderless games application. You can find it here, but this will be detailed later in this step by step guide.

THE GUIDE

Before we start, if you want to have your games set up to run well, read trough and apply fixes from these guides:

They are all similar in nature but have their own additions to making the game run better. They are extremely helpful and effective. They even include guides on how to FPS limit the game in full screen if you want to keep playing the game that way. Also, be sure to read the last ( 7.) point in this guide as it is important and will determine if you even want to do this or not.

Now that that’s out of the way...

1. First thing to do is run the game and make sure that full screen is off. This is luckily easy to do. If it’s not off, turn it off in options:

2. Next, if you’ve applied FPS limit trough your graphic control application as advised by guides, make sure it’s disabled because it will interfere with this fix. 3. Once you are sure that it is disabled, get 3booter and FPSlimiter from this page: http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php?topic=15585.0 (files in first two posts) 4. Open both .zip archives and extract all their contents to: - C:/Program Files (x86)/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Game/Bin or -C:/Program Files x(86)/Origin Games/The Sims 3/Game/Bin or whatever your install location of the game is.

4.a. If your game version is 1.69 there is one more step here. Once the files are extracted, you will need to rename launcher like this: Sims3Launcher.exe  to  Launcher.exe And then download and extract this new launcher exe in the bin:

Rename it to Sims3Launcher.exe 5. Now that you have the fixes set up properly, you can run the game: - Trough 3booter.exe if you are on version 1.67 (feel free to make a shortcut) or - Trough new launcher, Sims3Launcher.exe, if you are on 1.69. Note that your shortcuts to game launcher will now point to this new launcher due to filename. If you want to use the old launcher, make a shortcut for Launcher.exe

6. BUT WAIT!!! What about that borderless thingy m’ bob? Well here comes that part of setting up windowed mode to look like it’s full screen. Once that’s downloaded, install it and run it, after you’ve ran the game in windowed mode. You will be greeted with this:

  TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF THE INCINERATOR

  General Description

  The plant has to have four distinct sections that show three principles of turbulence, residence time and temperature retention. The regulated sections could include but not limited to:

While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced numerous changes to how the fitness industry does business, it is best to think of this disruption as a catalyst for changing how we engage our customers by creating new ways to deliver fitness solutions. As former Congressman and Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel once said, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that is that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”

Health and exercise professionals have applied this mindset and responded to mandated facility closures by finding new ways to deliver workout solutions via video streaming services as well as making use of outdoor spaces that allow for proper social distancing. The question becomes: Are these adaptations merely a stopgap solution for dealing with the pandemic or will they become a part of the fitness landscape for the foreseeable future? And importantly: How will these changes affect the ability of health and exercise professionals to earn a living in the coming year?

While it is not possible to predict the future with any certainty, this attempt to see how we’ll be doing fitness in the coming year is based on conversations with colleagues who work for equipment manufacturers, have positions in health club operations or own fitness studios, both in the United States and all over the world. To help you plan for your business in the coming year, each prediction is also accompanied by what it means for health and exercise professionals and how it might affect your ability to conduct your business in the coming year.

1. Streaming services that deliver workouts to any screen connected to the internet have become extremely popular and will remain so for the foreseeable future. The variety of workouts combined with the chat features that allow participants to engage with the instructors and each other really does create the studio experience from the comfort of home. According to Jessica Pohl Sinnarajah, a cycling instructor in Buffalo, N.Y., “The social online presence created by the streaming platforms help create a feeling of community, even while you’re working out alone. There is a sense of accomplishment when posting about workout achieving that also helps to build accountability to others who work out on the platform.” In 2021, class size restrictions will lead many facilities to offer hybrid services of streaming workouts directly from their studios. Thanks to technology, many facilities will create their own streaming services that will allow some members to participate live in the studio while others will be sweating from home. Fitness facilities that have not already done so will need to identify virtual solutions to deliver group workouts, which can help ensure retention of existing members while providing new opportunities to engage with coaches from the facility.

It’s one thing to buy exercise equipment for the home, it’s another to learn how to use it correctly. The explosive popularity of garage gyms should create a number of new opportunities for health and exercise professionals who specialize in in-home workouts to deliver their services to a whole new clientele.

4.As mentioned above, due to a variety of reasons, including evidence suggesting a link between obesity and COVID-19 complications, it appears as if many individuals have become more physically active and have started to exercise for the purpose of improving health. According to the results of a United kingdom based study, the pandemic may be initiating a new interest in physical activity and exercise among older adults who are at greater risk of complications from the virus. As this recent CERTIFIED article on exercise and the immune system points out, it’s well established that regular exercise combined with other healthy lifestyle habits can strengthen the immune system. As new fitness consumers enter the market, it will create new opportunities for health and exercise professionals to design exercise programs to reduce risk factors and improve overall health.

5. On that note, in 2021 social media will continue to be the primary way that many individuals search for and consume fitness information. As more consumers enter the fitness market, many turn to popular social media platforms to look for guidance on how to start an exercise program. Health and exercise professionals that have a strong social media presence and know-how to leverage platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok to engage potential clients will have a distinct advantage for attracting this new business. If you’re a health and exercise professional who wants to develop a business that can deliver online workouts, now is the time to master the power of social media.

6. Due to its ability to deliver results in a short amount of time, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) will continue to be a popular mode of exercise in 2021. The key difference is that as long-time fitness consumers become another year older, these workouts will need to be modified for participants of all ages. Keep in mind that many older fitness consumers have been exercising for most of their lives so they are more likely to do a HIIT workout than chair aerobics. In addition to benefits such as improving aerobic capacity, elevating the hormones that help promote muscle growth, and managing healthy body weight, research suggests that HIIT elevates BDNF, a protein that stimulates the growth of new brain cells. Body-weight workouts that enhance mobility, the use of percussion guns and foam rollers for myofascial release, and compression clothing are all useful approaches for enhancing recovery from exercise and will only gain popularity in the coming year. There will also be an increased emphasis on the health benefits of sleep, in part because of its positive effects on the immune system. From bedsheets that can help retain infrared heat to smart mattresses that can automatically adjust the temperature while monitoring biometric data such as heart rate variability, a number of products are being introduced with the promise of helping improve health through sleep. To meet this need, health and exercise professionals should brush up on their knowledge of recovery techniques so they can provide solutions to ensure that clients experience results from their workouts.

8. Because it can help reduce overall stress levels while supporting a positive mindset, meditation and mindfulness will become more popular in mainstream fitness over the coming year. For example, Rob Kram, the director of content and programming at St. James, a health club outside of Washington, D.C., indicated that his facility is planning on meditation becoming a popular option for members in the coming year. How To Respond When A Crisis Becomes The New

Normal

Many businesses spent the first several weeks of the crisis reviewing continuity plans, establishing crisis command centers, and ensuring the safety and security of their workers. We thus would expect these businesses to be entering the “stabilize” wave of a three-wave crisis model (see “The three waves of a COVID-19 crisis response”), in which companies are learning to operate in “the new normal” yet are continuing to respond to immediate fires. Much of the focus in the stabilize wave is on implementing tactical steps to preserve business value, including liquidity analysis, operational scenario planning, and an assessment of the various government stimulus programs.

To help both manage the current situation and prepare for what happens in the coming weeks, it helps to break down crisis responses into six key areas, create separate plans and lines of responsibility for each, and empower decision-makers to act.

Strategy and brand

Many of the actions taken during the three waves overlap and evolve over time. For example, the crisis management team set up in the mobilize wave will continue to function as conditions stabilize because there are likely to be new crisis situations. Students in Toronto who are in the last few years of high school. They are accustomed to using social media, but they do not know how to get the most out of it, nor do they know about many of the challenges or security issues that we have learned about in class.

The Power of Hashtags

People use hashtags as a way of connecting relevant content and information together. For example, if I created a social media post on twitter and used the hashtag #Raptors, now anyone who searches #Raptors will also be able to see this post in real time. As an influencer or company who uses hashtags to sell products or services, they use relevant hashtags to essentially group things together. For example, a gardening company may hashtag a few gardening tools and sprays on a single picture, with the hope of attracting more people to at least one of the hashtags revolving around a similar topic.

It is important to use hashtags to filter out your content and posts. What this means is you want to narrow your audience. It would also be very effective to measure your KPI such as traffic and views on specific hashtags to see what works and what doesn’t. By focusing on this, you will be able to attract more traffic to your posts by using the right and relevant hashtags.

2. Social Media Conversions

Social media are such powerful platforms that give you the opportunity to measure your success. A social media platform like Facebook, where you can now advertise your business and purchase items directly from the advertisement page have multiple different conversion metrics you can use to measure the success of your ads. Some conversion metrics you are able to measure are things like newsletter subscriptions, clicks, spending amount, conversion rates and bounce rate to name a few. As students continue to use social media for their entertainment, it is important for them to understand that those platforms can create opportunities for them as they head into post secondary or into the workplace. For example, an entrepreneur, these platforms provide them the ability to consistently check their metrics, make adjustments and monitor the results. In large companies as well, many now use online social media and advertisement tactics to gain customer information. Companies then use that data to tweak their tactics in hopes of receiving higher returns. Understanding how to use these metrics will give you a large advantage when you are able to manage these aspects of a company.

In my opinion, as young students, mastering how to use these metrics as a young age gives you tremendous advantage over many others who are not proactively learning and understanding conversions. You will be more advanced for employment and with today’s unprecedented times, the world is only going to become more reliable with online instruments. Data will continue to be received more and more online and slowly move away from the old school paper and mail surveys to receive customer data.

3. Cybersecurity

In this day and age, quadrillions of information is being uploaded online including our very own profiles. The difficult issue here is that with the expanding amount of information that is being shared online, we are exposed to the risks of cybercrime. Cybercrime is usually apparent through hackers who send viruses to our computers and steal our personal information such as passwords, SIN, addresses, credit card numbers and more. These kind of hackers who gain our information for personal gain are on the extreme spectrum of cybercrime, while on the other hand there are businesses who hire experts to collect information from us through our very own devices. One of the ways this is done is through the implementation of cookies. Cookies are code embedded on your computers and laptops that occurs when you visit websites. These cookies help the companies identify you as a unique visitor and records your interaction with the website (Module 4). Advertising companies then display advertisements on any site you visit. You may notice if you shop for a specific brand of clothing and you move on to a completely different website, you will see an ad generate based on the last thing you were searching for and this is all due to cookies. The “third party” data is stored in profiles by groups called “data brokers”. These brokers then segment us into groups based on categories. This is why your online identity is important. “Think twice, click once” is a great saying because the more you browse on your social media, the more data of you is actually being stored. It’s important to keep cautious of this because information can get hacked or leaked.

In the millennial generation, the most popular devices used by consumers are smart devices . In fact, over 3 billion people in the world are proven to be smartphone users due to its many smart device innovative features, including it’s variety of apps! Apps are one or more programs that are designed for end-users. For businesses, apps are important because they can help you target broader audiences and potential consumers because most people use their phones every day, and putting your content software on their devices is an easy way to reach them (Module 7). Apps create colour and variety for smart devices as they act as a platform to create and consume an endless amount of activities such as a game console (PS5), Smartphone (iPhone), web browser and more. More commonly, many apps are accessed through smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. As mobile devices were drastically innovated over the years, along with it came the famous “Mobile App” in which we use such platforms to make our daily life more convenient. The evolution of apps has impacted our lives in many ways: If you’re looking for something in the dark, you can turn the flash on your phone and use it as a flashlight, and use it as a flashlight. When we need to calculate how much we should tip a service provider, we automatically pull out our phone calculator! When we want to connect with someone overseas, we can easily message or call them- you get the gist of it.  For businesses, you can use apps to learn about your consumers and improve your marketing tactics. It can also be used as a platform to condense large amounts of information into an easy communication channel for users and employees.

5. Why Websites are Key for Businesses

The importance of incorporating a website for your business. A website is a platform that may include both hardware and software in order to operate. Some of the world’s most famous websites include: Youtube, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook and Amazon. People rely on websites for reasons such as daily entertainment, online shopping, acquiring resources through search engines and many more. What all of these great websites have in common is that they are all able to optimize their website by remaining responsive but also adapting to different platforms, by delivering the same uniform experience for users. Another good way to measure how well a website was created is by observing the user experience it provides. More specifically, what we can use as a benchmark to test the value of the website is through the look, feel and usability it provides. Does the website look like a platform you can trust? Does browsing through the website give you any feelings such as joy? Is it easy to navigate through the website? Does the website load quickly? All of these issues are highly important and must be accounted for when creating a good website. The interplay of visuals, colour, ergonomics, and more, all play a specific role in the overall experience a website can provide (Module 7). To create a website, there are a number of different platforms that provide a variety of templates such as Wordpress, GoDaddy, Shopify and many more. These websites often include the three main categories: media queries, fluid grids and flexible images. Each category has a specific role on the website as they affect the look and feel of the website.

The importance of incorporating a website for your business. A website is a platform that may include both hardware and software in order to operate. Some of the world's most famous websites include: Youtube, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook and Amazon. People rely on websites for reasons such as daily entertainment, online shopping, acquiring resources through search engines and many more. What all of these great websites have in common is that they are all able to optimize their website by remaining responsive but also adapting to different platforms, by delivering the same uniform experience for users. Another good way to measure how well a website was created is by observing the user experience it provides. More specifically, what we can use as a benchmark to test the value of the website is through the look, feel and usability it provides. Does the website look like a platform you can trust? Does browsing through the website give you any feelings such as joy? Is it easy to navigate through the website? Does the website load quickly? All of these issues are highly important and must be accounted for when creating a good website. The interplay of visuals, colour, ergonomics, and more, all play a specific role in the overall experience a website can provide (Module 7). To create a website, there are a number of different platforms that provide a variety of templates such as Wordpress, GoDaddy, Shopify and many more. These websites often include the three main categories: media queries, fluid grids and flexible images. Abstract

A great deal of research has been geared toward the calyces of roselle due to their medicinal properties. Though leaves of roselle have been consumed by diversed ethnic groups, little research efforts have been focused on leaves due to unestablished beneficial bioactivities. This paper provides preliminary data on the effect of various types and rates of fertilizer on fresh fruit yields, total polyphenol and antioxidant contents of the leaves of roselle (Senegal accession). Fertilizer applications at planting time had nonsignificant increasing effect on fresh fruit yield/plant and non-significant reduction in total polyphenol and antioxidant contents of the leaves. Inconsistent effects of applied fertilizer on macro and micro nutrient contents of the leaves were observed. In general, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Mn and Zn were significantly (P<0.05) increased by selective fertilizer types and rates while Cu and Fe contents were not significantly affected by fertilization. Further studies on fertilization along with increased frequencies of application are needed to validate these findings.

Introduction

More than 300 species of Hibiscus species (Malvacea family) can be found growing in both tropical and subtropical regions of the world [1]. Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa L., is only one of the hibiscus species that has its sepals of the flower developed into a swollen red calyx enclosing the mature fruit at maturity. The calyces are found to be rich in nutrients and photochemical compounds that exhibits anti-oxidant activities Consequently, economic interests have been mainly focused on roselle calyces which are used worldwide in the production of herbal tea, cold refreshing drinks, jellies, jam, sauces, chutneys, wines, preserves and food colorants (D'Heureux-Calix and Badrie, 2004). Because of the folk's medicinal uses, a great deal of research has been geared toward roselle calyces. Most research has been heavily directed toward the studies of phytochemistry, anti-oxidant properties and effects of calyx extracts on anti-oxidant activities, and other bioactivities such as anti-inflammatory action, anti-microbial, and antitumor activities [2] and Wang 2015. Even though leaves are widely consumed by a diverse population of ethnic groups, particularly in tropical regions of Africa, little research effort has been focused on leaves. In recent studies [2], roselle leaves are found to be a good source of phenolic acids and flavonoids that exhibit anti-oxidant activities. The purpose of this preliminary study is to evaluate the effect of various types and rates of fertilizer application on roselle fruit yield, nutritional, phenolic and antioxidant content of the leaves.

Materials and Methods

Chemicals and reagents

ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sufonic acid), potassium persulfate were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich of St. Louis, MO, USA. Folin Ciocalteu's phenol reagent was purchased from MP Biomedicals of Solon, OH, USA. Water and methanol were purchased from Fisher Scientific of Fair Lawn, BJ, USA.

Experiment and plant samples

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the applied fertilizers at planting time on roselle plants of Senegal accession during the 2014 growing season at Southern University's research farm, Baton Rouge, Louisiana which has a subtropical climate (30.5240N and 91.1900W and elevation of 22m). The area has an average precipitation of 1700mm and the average annual temperature is 19.70C. The field has a silty clay loam soil with a pH of 7.1. The seeds of Senegal accession were planted in the 2x2 cell-pack trays in the greenhouse at the beginning of April, 2014. Seedlings were hand-transplanted into the field one month after germination. A completely randomized design with a total nine applications as treatments. These treatments were the control; 3, 6 and 9# (lb=454g)/30.48m. of organic fertilizer 4-2-2, respectively; 3, 6 and 9# (454g)/30.48m of organic fertilizer 8-5-5, respectively; and 3 and 6# (lb=454g)/30.48 m. of inorganic fertilizer 13-13-13, respectively. Each treatment consisted of 16 plants spaced at 6 feet (1.83m) between plants within a 3.5ft (1.07m) row. Between row spacing was 8 feet (2.44m.). Fertilizers were applied and incorporated on top of the raised bed. Seedlings were planted one day after fertilizer applications. Leaves were randomly collected in late July from branches at waist height from 10 plants of each treatment.

Nutrient elemental analysis

Leaves in the brown paper bags were dried at 500C in the Precision Thelco Laboratory oven for 8 hours in the oven and then ground using Thomas-Wiley Model 4 grinder with a 30 mesh screen. The ground samples in the vials were subject to one-hour of drying before they were stored in the desiccator to prevent moisture contamination. Three individual 0.5g of composite ground leaf samples from each treatment were placed in 50mL Digi-tubes (SCP Sciences) and were digested using DEENA automatic digester. Each digested sample in the Digi tube was brought up to a total volume of 20mL with distilled water. The solution with digested sample was vacuum-filtered with a 1.0 micron Digi-filter. The filtrate was analyzed by SPECTRO ARCOS ICAP for Al, Bo, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, K, NA, S and Zn. Separately, 0.15g of dried leaf sample was used for determining the amount of carbon and nitrogen using LECO CN Analyzer.

Sample preparation for total phenol and antioxidant activity determination

The method of sample preparation was adopted from Xu [3] and Zhen [2]. A 100mg of each dried and ground leaf sample was measured and placed in a volumetric flask. Twenty-five mL of 70% (v/v) methanol/water with 0.1% acetic solution was added into the flask. The sample extraction was then put in ultrasonic water bath for 10 minutes followed by shaking at room temperature for overnight. The extract of each sample was then filtered through 0.45um filter. The filtrate was used for the Folin-Ciocalteu and ABTS radical scavenging assays.

Phenolic content determination (Folin-Ciocalteu assay)

The Folin-Ciocalteu assay with modifications [4] used by Zhen [2] was adopted for the determination of the total phenolic content of the leaves. 40ul of the prepared leaf extract was mixed with 900ul diluted Folin Ciocalteu's reagent followed by incubation at room temperature for 5 minutes. Then, 400ml of 15% sodium carbonate was added. The mixture was allowed to react at room temperature for 45 minutes. The UV absorption of the mixture solution at wavelength of 752nm was measured against a blank solution. The standard curve was measured based on the prepared gallic acid standard solution (0.38, 0.19, 0.095 and 0.475mg/ml). The result was transformed as mg/g of gallic acid. The results were calculated from the mean of three replicates.

In vitro antioxidant activity (ABTS radical scavenging assay)

The procedure of the decolonization of the ABTS radical cation [5] used by Zhen [2] was adopted for the determination of antioxidant activity. 38.4 mg of ABTS and 6.6 mg of potassium per sulfate were co-dissolved in 10ml of water and stored for 16 hours in the dark environment to form stable radical action (ABTS+). The stored radical solution was then diluted using ethanol to a concentration with UV absorption of 0.70+/-0.20 at734nm. 900ul of the diluted ABTS radical working solution was mixed with 10ul of the leaf extract followed by 20 minutes of reaction at room temperature. The decolonization of the mixed solution indicates that antioxidant compounds in the extract quenched ABTS radical actions. There was a quantitative relationship between the reduction absorbance at 734nm and the concentration antioxidants present in the sample [2]. The standard curve was built up by plotting the concentrations of Trolox against the percentage of inhibition. The value of antioxidant capacity of the sample was calculated as Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity. The final result was expressed as the % of antioxidant per dry weight basing on the calculation from the mean of three replicates.

Results and Discussion

Figure 1 shows the effects of the type of fertilizer and its rate on fresh fruit yield/plant. There was a trend to indicate that applied fertilizers increased fresh fruit yield of roselle of Senegal accession under this study. However, the yield increases were observed to be non-significant. Since all fertilizers were applied at the planting time in spring, the effect of fertilization might have faded away during the late summer and early fall during which fruits were produced. This fading effect of applied fertilizers can be supported by various extension publications indicating the recommended side-dressing of fertilizers are needed for various vegetable crops during the growth period [6-8]. Figure 2 shows the effects of the type and rate of fertilizer applied at planting time on the total polyphenol and antioxidant content of roselle leaves in % of dry weight. There appeared to have a trend that increased amounts and rates of fertilizer exhibited a reduction in total polyphenol content. The reduction in polyphenol content might be due to less nutritional stress by plants receiving increased amount of fertilizer. It is hypothesized here that further application of fertilizers to enhance plant growth and yield may cause significant reduction in polyphenol production. It had been reported that plants under stress provided more antioxidants in response to stresses [9-12].

The results when the effects were compared to that of the Control treatment, showed that (a) 3# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2 and 3#, 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) increased N content of the leaves, (b) all fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on P content of the leaves, (c) 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2 significantly (P<0.05) increased K content of the leaves, (d) all fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on Ca content of the leaves, (e) 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2 , 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer 8-5-5 significantly (P<0.05) increased Mg content of the leaves, (f) 3#, 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer and 6# of inorganic fertilizer 13-13-13 significantly (P<0.05) increased S content of the leaves, (g) all fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on Cu and Fe contents of the leaves, (h) 3# and 6# of organic fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) increased B content of the leaves, (i) 3# and 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2, 9# of organic fertilizer 8-5-5 and 3# and 6# of inorganic fertilizer 13-13-13 significantly increased Mn content of the leaves and (j) 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2, 3#, 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer 8-5-5 and 6# of inorganic fertilizer significantly increased Zn content of the leaves. The results of this study showed inconsistent in nutrient elemental contents of plants in response to fertilizer treatments. In general, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Mn, and Zn were significantly increased by selective fertilizer types and rates while Cu and Fe were not significantly affected by the fertilizer applications.

Conclusion

Fertilizer applications at planting time enhanced many macro and micro nutrient elemental contents of roselle leaves but did not adequately affect fresh fruit yield, leaf total phenol and anti-oxidant contents. Reviewed literature provides evidence a significant increase in fruit yield can be obtained through an increase in fertilizer application as side-dressing. Evidence provided by literatures also suggests that an increase in fertilizer applications which reduce nutritional stress can also possibly reduce polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of roselle. Inconsistent results of this study suggest that further studies on the effect of fertilizer and the frequency of fertilizer application are needed to validate the results of these findings and conclusion.

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max (stylized and marketed as iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max; Roman numeral “X” pronounced “ten”)[13][14] are smartphones designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the twelfth-generation flagships of the iPhone, succeeding the iPhone X.[15] Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the devices alongside a lower-end model, the iPhone XR, on September 12, 2018, at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park. Pre-orders began on September 14, 2018, and went on sale on September 21.[16]

The XS Max was the first plus-sized iPhone to have the newer bezel-less form factor, as the iPhone X did not have a larger variant. Production of the iPhone XS (and XS Max) ceased on September 10, 2019, after the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro announcement. On January 20, 2020, Apple started selling certified refurbished models starting at $699.

Design[edit]

The iPhone XS has a design visually near-identical to the iPhone X but includes upgraded hardware, featuring the A12 Bionic chip built with a 7 nanometer process.[17] It also features a 5.85 inch (149 mm) OLED display (marketed as 5.8 inch) with a 2436×1125 resolution at 458 ppi and contains dual 12-megapixel rear cameras and one 7-megapixel front-facing camera. The iPhone XS Max features the same hardware and cameras, but has a larger 6.46 inch (164 mm) OLED display (marketed as 6.5 inch) 2688 x 1242 resolution at 458 ppi and battery (3,174mAh).[18] It was also noted by the media that the XS received a smaller battery than that of the X (dropping to 2,658 mAh from 2,716 mAh).[19] The XS’ battery is a new single-cell L-shaped battery, while the iPhone XS Max battery remains two cells like the iPhone X.[20] Additionally, Apple states that the iPhone XS lasts up to 30 minutes longer than iPhone X, while the iPhone XS Max lasts up to 1.5 hours longer than iPhone X.[21]

Apple claims that the devices have faster Face ID technology than the iPhone X.[22] It was also announced in June 2019 at WWDC that Face ID on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and iPhone X would be made up to 30% faster with iOS 13, which was released on September 19, 2019.[23]

The XS and XS Max are rated IP68 for dust and water resistance under IEC standard 60529, with Apple specifying a maximum depth of 2 meters and up to 30 minutes of submersion in water.[24] This is an improvement over the IP67 water resistance of the iPhone 8 and X.[25] Apple has performed tests in various liquids including chlorinated water, salt water, tea, wine, beer and juices.[26]

The XS and XS Max support dual SIMs through a nano-SIM and an eSIM. In mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, however, the XS Max comes with a dual nano-SIM tray (and no eSIM). The XS does not have a dual nano-SIM tray, so the eSIM functionality is enabled for use in Hong Kong and Macau, but not in mainland China.[27][28][29]

The wireless charging coil material was switched to copper to reduce charging time and power loss.[30][31]

Rear camera upgrades[edit]

iPhone cameras, starting with the iPhone 6S, had a 12MP (1/2.94″) sensor size with a 1.22 μm pixel size.[32][33]

The iPhone XS, XS Max and XR are the first ones to record stereo audio for videos.[34]

Starting with the iPhone 2018 lineup (iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR), these cameras were updated to a 12MP (1/2.55″) sensor size with a 1.4 μm pixel size,[35] the same sensor and pixel size as the primary cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S10,[36] Samsung Galaxy S9[37] Samsung Galaxy S8[38] Samsung Galaxy S7,[39] Pixel 2,[40] Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL,[41] Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.[42] Moto X4.[43]

Reception and connectivity issues[edit]

The iPhone XS received generally positive reviews from critics after release. iPhone XS and XS Max users initially had issues with LTE, Wi-Fi reception and Bluetooth connections. Some experts claimed that a faulty antenna was to blame,[44] and in response to many consumer complaints about iPhone XS/XS Max connectivity problems, Apple contacted users for help with their investigation.[45] To resolve some problems with the XS/XS Max, Apple pushed the iOS 12.0.1 update on October 8, 2018, which, along with addressing the Chargegate issue, fixed a connectivity issue where Bluetooth could become temporarily unavailable on the XS/XS Max.[46]

Charging issues (Chargegate)[edit]

Users reported problems charging the iPhone XS and XS Max with a Lightning cable, where the device would fail to charge if it had been off for a while, and would only begin to charge if the screen was turned on.[47] This would occur due to a software bug with Apple’s “Disable USB accessories when locked” setting, a feature intended to prevent unknown devices from accessing a user’s content within an iPhone. The press dubbed the issue “Chargegate”.[48][49][50][51][52] This issue, along with Bluetooth connectivity problems, was resolved with the release of iOS 12.0.1 on October 8, 2018.[53]

Excessive smoothing in selfies (Beautygate)[edit]

Customers have also reported seeing unrealistic smoothness on their skin when taking a selfie by an automatic filter.[54] Observers have noted that this face-smoothing effect is likely (and unintentionally) caused by the new Smart HDR camera feature on the XS and XS Max. This technology combines multiple photos of varying exposures to increase dynamic range on the iPhones’ photos, but can also lead to less pronounced facial imperfections and decreased highlights in selfies. Some speculated this was the result of a hidden “beauty mode” (an actual feature in some smartphones) and dubbed the issue “Beautygate.” There was a general dispute in the community as to whether the camera actually “intended” to “perfect” faces or if they just appeared that way as result of a better quality camera.[55]

Apple said that these results were due to the Smart HDR algorithm incorrectly selecting the blurrier long exposure as its base frame instead of the sharpest short exposure. The issue was resolved with the release of iOS 12.1 on October 30, 2018.[56][57]
