DualShockers’ Favorite Games of 2019 — Ben’s Top 10

From games like Apex Legends to The Outer Worlds, 2019 proved to me that there were a huge variety of games to enjoy across all genres.

As 2019 comes to a close, DualShockers and our staff are reflecting on this year’s batch of games and what were their personal highlights within the last year. Unlike the official Game of the Year 2019 awards for DualShockers, there are little-to-no-rules on our individual Top 10 posts. For instance, any game — not just 2019 releases — can be considered.

I’m not really sure where to begin with 2019. It’s a year I’ve certainly grown a hated for, and the gaming landscape has been incredibly volatile at times. We’ve seen the Sekiro discourse send a barrage of abuse towards both disabled gamers and journalists. We’ve seen a well-known publisher hold an AMA on 4Chan. We’ve seen E3 doxx nearly every journalist that has attended the event.

However, amongst the dark days we’ve had some great games come out in 2019, and I’ve been enjoying a handful of games I never would have experienced if it wasn’t for Xbox Game Pass. I’ve also been front and center in helping to direct change to how video games are made more accessible for players, but more on that at a later date.

So, here’s my top 10 list of games that I’ve been enjoying in 2019.

10. The Outer Worlds 

Originally this title from Obsidian Interactive was going to be higher up on my list, but after pondering on it I realized that it doesn’t entirely deserve to go too high. I enjoyed it, I completed it, I gushed about it for numerous weeks, and I found Parvati, a video game character I adored. But while I really enjoyed the game, it started to become a chore even thinking about picking it back up and trying to go through it all again. The combat felt groggy, the side-quests were a bit naff, and it wasn’t much of a broad open-world as I initially expected.

Saying that though, I did find the writing between the companions and the main storyline characters incredibly engaging and enjoyable to sit through. I liked how the acting reflected wonderfully on dialogue options I chose, and as a result, I found myself heavily engrossed in the story right up until the end where it told me the fate of those on my team that I may have neglected somewhat. The brilliant writing was enough for The Outer Worlds to have left an incredibly positive impression on me.

9.  The Orange Box

I’m going to cheat a bit here. Earlier in 2019, I went through Portal for the hell of it; another journey through Valve’s puzzler with portals and an evil robot that sings about cake. I’ve played it God knows how many times and it still never gets old. I also jumped on Team Fortress 2 when news sparked up about the game no longer being supported by Valve for the time being. Hearing the news sent me down a nostalgic trip from my many hours spent with it. Returning to it was somewhat heart-warming to be back in the world, but at the same time heart-breaking that it seems riddled with hackers now. Despite that, it was still brilliant to go back.

With Half-Life: Alyx being revealed, I wanted to spark up my memories of the Half-Life world again. So I booted up Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, and then managed to get through Half-Life 2: Episode Two before becoming busy with this journalism lark. Safe to say, The Orange Box is by far my favorite collection of games that will always remain fun to play no matter how many years have passed, even now in 2019.

8. Ape Out

Devolver Digital’s crazy ooh-ah-ah game was one I enjoyed for hours, and still find myself picking it up every now and again. The gameplay was challenging at best, and had a soundtrack that reacted to the combat which kept me wanting to keep the fight going at all costs, even if it meant bleeding out everywhere. The sounds of the punches, gunfire, and limbs splattering were all of high-quality and kept Ape Out feeling more like a large-scale action flick rather than a small indie title.

The art style was also something I found to be the most memorable; it had a clash of gritty textures that seemed to blend in well with the vibrant orange ape. The harder modes for a bigger challenge were also incredibly frustrating but were always tempting for that “one more go” mentality. The one that stood out the most to me was the mode in which you have to break back into the place from which you escaped, but you’ve only got one life. The Metroidvania twist here left me with hours of extra fun trying to beat it.

7. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a game that I’ve always wanted to play, but one I never got round to until I got the Switch. Stardew Valley is one of those games that seems perfect for portability; I’ve always enjoyed relaxing games in which you can do simple things such as farming, but the pixel art style adds to the aesthetic that I found myself being drawn towards. I particularly enjoy the music combined with the gentle sounds of nature flittering through the world. Eventually, I found myself putting it down for a good few months, and it’s always sat there beckoning me to play it again.

It wasn’t until recently when I heard there was a new update for it that I picked it back up and jumped into an entirely new game, deleting my old farm. Upon doing so, I’ve rejuvenated my love for it and I’m glad I’m back on the scene for it. My only question is, will I continue enjoying it when Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes out, or will I abandon it for a town of overly happy animals? Time will tell.

6. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Thank you Xbox Game Pass; if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have finally tried Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Originally, I never picked the game up because I didn’t think I’d enjoy it. There was no reason, in particular, it just didn’t draw me in. However, all the talk of how it represents mental health and how the graphics are stunning was enough for me to download it and try it out. I was blown away. The binaural sound design is really quite something to behold, especially with a good set of headphones. The character animations are lovely and the combat felt heavy and impactful.

I wasn’t a fan of the Metroidvania-theme that lingers throughout the game, but it certainly adds to the tension of trying to stay alive just so you don’t have to go through it all again. It’s certainly a game I’ve had a great time with, and am still enjoying playing it now as we wait for the sequel to arrive with the Xbox Series X.

5. Tetris 99

I’ve always been a fan of Tetris, the old version and any modern-at-the-time iterations. When Tetris 99 was announced, I won’t lie, I groaned: “Ugh, another Battle Royale attempt.” Little did I know that I grew to love it almost instantly. The matches can be quick, some can be lengthy and challenging. Some can be frustrating and some can leave me cocky and proud. I had started to grow fed up of it being constantly online though, and while I don’t agree that the single-player mode is locked behind a paywall, I paid for it.

The Big Blocks DLC is actually great, allowing me to play it with friends on the same system without needing to worry about 97 other players battling against us. The marathon mode is also addictive, with me racking up over 500 lines in one match. The fact that the game is still sporting a good deal of players online is also fantastic because whenever I want to jump online and play it, there’s always players there to fill 99 slots.

4. Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is still my all-time pirate game, even in 2019. I still get a lot of satisfaction from it, especially when it comes to just hanging out and having fun with friends or family. There’s always something to find, quests to do, and enemy ships to battle, but not only that, the game is continually being supported with more and more updates. These updates bring small changes and some big changes, such as the addition of fire which I find devastatingly good fun. I can’t get enough of the game, and while sailing alone can be boring, it’s still somewhat relaxing and a lovely escape from life.

3. Rocket League

Okay, the new Blueprints update has kind of angered the community, and I myself am annoyed that all the items I was planning to trade are now suddenly not tradable. But it goes without saying, Rocket League is still one of my favourite titles, specifically on the Switch. I used to play it on PC, then I switched to Xbox, but I’ve found myself more comfortable with it on the Switch due to the portability and being able to lounge around while knocking my balls around (you know what I mean).

What I most enjoy about the game though is the full cross-platform play that allows me to enjoy it with friends and family on different platforms. It’s an absolute godsend and keeps the game thriving with players.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I just can’t not have a year where I don’t pick this game up. Now it’s getting even harder to ignore despite being several years old because it’s being re-released on everything. It landed on the Nintendo Switch and sparked up the whole hype surrounding it again, then just as the chatter dies down, it heads over to Xbox Game Pass too. In addition to that, the Netflix series went live this month, making 2019 a pretty big year for The Witcher fans.

I still love jumping into the game, whether it’s to carry on with my quests I still haven’t completed, or to wander the expansive world for no reason but exploration, or to just take photos with Nividia Ansel. I’ve also found myself starting the game from scratch earlier this year because I forgot where I was, but this meant I got to experience the brilliant missions towards the start of the game, especially those with the Bloody Baron. It’s a game I don’t think I’ll ever tire of.

1. Apex Legends

A surprise favorite of mine. I tried getting into other Battle Royale games such as PUBG, Fortnite, Battlefield V‘s Firestorm mode, etc, but none have stuck with me. It wasn’t until Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends hooked me. I love nearly everything about it; the art is lovely, the way it feels to play is fluid, and the Ping system is revolutionary with me not even needing to use a headset to communicate.

The game has done well for itself since launch. While lately it has been slow on updating the game with new content, eventually the developers caught up and started introducing quality content over quantity. It’s a game I keep wanting to play, a game I continually enjoy despite dying so many times I fear my team despises me, and a game that I hope continues to be supported and inspires more multiplayer games to incorporate a Ping system.

In this guide, I’ll introduce some of the top Seattle attractions along with lots of practical info to help you plan a great trip to the Emerald City.

Introduction to Seattle

Seattle is located between Puget Sound and Lake Washington and has the Olympic Mountains to the west and Cascades to the east, making for some postcard-worthy scenery around every corner.

Unfortunately, it’s true that it rains quite often here. Don’t let it rain on your parade, though  — there are tons of great museums and other indoor activities to keep you busy when it gets a bit wet. 

Seattle is also well-known for its music and sports. The grunge era started here with bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana and it’s now a hub for indie music and underground hip-hop. Seattle fans are some of the loudest in the country as they show their unwavering support for teams like the Seahawks and Sounders.

I’ve been to cities all over my home country from coast to coast (including Denver, Detroit, Austin, Asheville, Boston, New Orleans and many more), and Seattle is definitely among my favorites. It really is amazing how you can enjoy all the amenities of a big city and yet so easily get out in nature.

Here we go, here’s a list of the top 15 things to see and do in Seattle:

1. Visit the Space Needle

Without a doubt, the most iconic landmark in Seattle is the Space Needle. Built for the 1962 edition of the World’s Fair, it has been a fixture in the city’s skyline ever since.

The observation deck is 520 feet (158 meters) tall, so you get to enjoy 360-degree panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see the entire city along with natural wonders such as Lake Union and Mt. Rainier. 

While the Space Needle has always been one of the top places to visit in Seattle, it’s even cooler now thanks to some serious renovations. A recent multi-million dollar upgrade gave the famous tower The Loupe — the first rotating glass floor in the world. They also added wall-to-ceiling glass and the new Skyrisers, which are tilting glass benches that provide for some unreal views of the city.

The Space Needle is open daily from 8 AM-Midnight, with the last entry at 11:15. Tickets range from $32.50-37.50 for adults and $24.50-28.50 for children. Click here for directions. 2. Check Out The Seattle Center

The Space Needle is just one part of the massive Seattle Center. This hub of education, art, and entertainment has so much going on that you could easily spend an entire day here and still not do it all.

One of the top Seattle attractions you’ll find here is the International Fountain. At different points throughout the day, the fountain is synchronized to music, making for a great show that’s fun for all ages. 

The Seattle Center is also home to Artists at Play — a funky playground designed by artists. There’s a climbing tower, labyrinth, carousel, and much more here. Best of all, it’s totally free! 

There’s much more to see and do here, including several different museums. Don’t miss the excellent Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Discovery Center. They run free group tours from Tuesday-Saturday at 2:00 PM and it’s always free to visit.

In addition to all the different attractions here, the Seattle Center also hosts thousands of events and programs throughout the year. Concerts, fitness classes, movies, festivals, and more are on tap here. Be sure to check their event calendar to see what’s going on.

3. See Chihuly Garden

One of the most popular places to visit in Seattle is the Chihuly Garden & Glass Museum. It’s dedicated to the stunning glasswork of Dale Chihuly, whose work can be seen in over 200 museums around the world.

The museum is split into three different areas — the Garden, Interior Exhibits, and the incredible Glasshouse. There’s also a theater that’s constantly showing short videos of Chihuly and his work. You’ll definitely want to carve out a couple of hours to take it all in. 

The museum is open from 8:30am – 8:30pm Monday to Thursday and stays open an hour later on the weekend. Tickets cost $32 for adults and $19 for children, or $22 and $14 if visiting after 6:00pm. Skip the line by booking tickets in advance online on their website.

They also offer a great free audio tour that you should play during your visit. If you’d prefer to explore with a real-life guide, they run group tours daily at 11 AM for $74/person. These include a book on the exhibition as well as a digital photo with the artwork for a nice keepsake.

4. Join a Food Tour

One of the most fun things to do in Seattle is eating your way across the city on a food tour. Eat Seattle comes highly recommended and has several different options for food tours in the Emerald City.

5. Visit The Museum of Pop Culture

Formerly known as the EMP (Experience Music Project), the Museum of Pop Culture is one of the best Seattle attractions around. Before you head inside, you’ll want to take some time to admire the stunning building from world-famous architect Frank Gehry.

Once you step inside the museum, which also goes by MoPOP, you’ll notice the impressive guitar sculpture called “If VI Was IX.” There are over 500 instruments making up this tornado-like sculpture! 

Speaking of music, the museum has several permanent exhibits dedicated to Seattle’s most famous rockers — Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. You can even channel your inner rockstar in their Sound Lab or take your picture in front of a packed audience in their On Stage area. 

That’s not all, though. MoPop also has exhibits on fantasy, science fiction, horror, video games, comedy, and much, much more. I’ve been to a lot of museums in my travels, and this one is definitely my favorite. Be sure to add it to your list of fun things to do in Seattle.

6. Pike Place Market – One of the most famous Seattle attractions!

One of the top places to visit in Seattle is Pike Place Market. Dating all the way back to 1907, this is one of the oldest public farmers’ markets in the United States. 

By shopping at Pike Place Market, you’re doing much more than just checking off one of the best Seattle attractions. You’re supporting local farmers, artisans, and small businesses as well! 

There’s so much to see (and taste) here that you’ll want to make sure you come hungry and stay awhile. In addition to the farmers’ market and crafts market, there are 80 restaurants and over 200 unique shops. With so many options, it can be a bit intimidating. Don’t miss a food tour (listed above at #4) of this market. 

It’s much more than just a market, actually. It’s a community with lots of excellent initiatives, such as a senior center, food bank, and pre-school. If you want to show some extra love, pay a visit to Rachel the Piggybank. Rub her snout and make a donation, and legend has it you’ll have good luck.

7. Enjoy the Waterfront Park

After exploring Pike Place, you’re just a short walk from the next spot on our list of Seattle attractions — Waterfront Park. There are several benches and picnic tables here, so it’s the perfect place to sit down and enjoy whatever delicious food you picked up at the market.

The park is home to two different platforms where you can enjoy some fantastic views. On a clear day, you can even see the Olympic Mountains in the distance. There are coin-operated telescopes here to help you get an even better look at the surroundings. Be sure to check out the Waterfront Fountain as well.

One of the most fun things to do in Seattle is taking a ride on the Seattle Great Wheel. This giant Ferris wheel is open from 10 AM-11 PM Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on the weekend. Tickets cost $14 for adults and $9 for kids. You also have the option of splurging for a VIP ticket ($50) for their luxury gondola and a souvenir t-shirt.

8. Day Trip to Mount Rainier 

If you have some extra time in Seattle, consider doing a full day trip out to Mount Rainier which is an active stratovolcano in the Mount Rainier National Park. This towering volcano is 14,400 ft (4,390m) and in the National Park, you’ll find numerous activities on offer, including hiking, camping and rock climbing.

For travellers on a day trip, hiking along one of the many trails is a top choice. During the winter months, you can trade-in your hiking boots for show shoes and still enjoy the trails. 

The highly-rated Evergreen Escapes runs full-day, small group tours to Mount Rainier, which are tailored to your fitness levels.   9. Take a Cruise

While Seattle looks great on land, it looks even better from the water! Taking a cruise around Elliot Bay and the Puget Sound is easily one of the most fun things to do in Seattle.

Your options for a cruise range from a simple 1-hour harbor trip to overnight getaways. On the budget end, you can simply take one of the local ferries to enjoy the views. The ferry to Bainbridge Island only costs $8.50 for adults and $4.25 for children, and the return trip is free. It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon without spending a ton of cash.

Argosy Cruises has been in business for 70 years and their tours come highly recommended. They have seven different options, including their 2.5-hour cruise of the Ballard Locks ($47) where you’ll enjoy a fully narrated trip, and experience a boat elevator as the ship rises or drops based on the tides. 

Argosy Cruises also offers a 1-hour harbour cruise through the Puget Sound ($34), offering amazing views of the Seattle skyline, and on clear days, of Mount Rainier.

10. Walk Through Washington Park Arboretum

The Washington Park Arboretum is definitely one of the most beautiful Seattle attractions to visit. This scenic park has miles upon miles of trails and is a living collection of plants. It’s a prime example of why Seattle is known as the Emerald City and a lovely place to spend a few hours.

Spring is a very popular time to visit the park thanks to the azaleas that are in bloom. Come here in the fall and you’ll see Japanese maples and strawberry trees, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors.

The arboretum is open daily from dawn to dusk and is totally free to visit. They also have several different tours and classes as well as options for birding and boating. Check their website for all the details. 

While you’re here, it’s well worth it to pay the entrance fee for the Japanese Garden ($8 for adults and $4 for children). They have free guided tours from April to October at 12:30, and you can also enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony here for an extra $10. It’s a little slice of Japan right here in Seattle!

11. Visit the Seattle Art Museum

Art lovers will want to experience SAM. The Seattle Art Museum actually consists of three different facilities — the main museum, the Asian Art Museum, and the Olympic Sculpture Park.

At the main museum, you’ll find an impressive collection of art from all corners of the globe. It’s known for the extensive collections of Native American and Northwest Coast art. There are over 25,000 different works of art on display here, so take your time.

In addition to the main museum, you can also pay a visit to the Olympic Sculpture Park. It’s located just a mile away (click here for directions), so it’s easy to visit both. Once an industrial site, it’s now a free public park full of unique sculptures. 

The Asian Art Museum is currently closed for renovations, but it will re-open this fall. Keep an eye on their website for more details.

The art museum is open from 10 AM-5 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday-Sunday. It’s closed on Tuesday but stays open until 9 PM on Thursday. Tickets are $29.99 for adults, $19.99 for students and teens ages 15-18, and free for kids 14 and under. If you happen to be in town on the first Thursday of the month, it’s free for everyone! 12. Visit The Museum of Flight

If you’re interested in air and space, you’ll want to include the Museum of Flight to your Seattle itinerary. There are over 150 aircraft on display here along with thousands of artifacts and photos.

There’s enough to see and do to spend several hours here, so this is a great option for those frequent rainy days in Seattle. A major highlight is the Aviation Pavilion, which features an impressive collection of rare airplanes. There are WWII bombers, the first Boeing 747, and even the first jet Air Force One. You can even board some of them!

In addition to all the aircraft, they have plenty of interesting exhibits to check out, which change frequently. Click here to view a list of current exhibits and see what’s coming up.

For those airplane fanatics, you can also visit the Boeing Factory which is about 30 miles (50km) from Seattle. On the tour, you’ll check out the Boeing factory with a local guide and see planes at various stages of assembly! Plus, you’ll wander around the 28,000-square-foot Aviation Gallery and check out the exhibits and displays. Learn more about this tour here. 

The Museum of Flight is open daily from 10 AM-5 PM. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $16 for children. 13. Watch Some Professional Sports

People in Seattle are crazy about their sports, and they express their love for their teams very loudly. In fact, Seahawks fans have twice set the Guinness World Record for loudest crowd noise at a sporting event. The team refers to their passionate fans as the “12s,” as they basically act as the 12th player.

The Seahawks (NFL) play their home games at CenturyLink Field. The stadium is also home to the Seattle Sounders FC, who have been selling out home games since their debut in MLS ten years ago. If you can manage to score a ticket, you’re in for a good time.

During the summer months, you can catch the Mariners (MLS) at T-Mobile Park. With around 80 home games per season, there’s a good chance they’ll be in town if you’re visiting between May and September. 

Fun fact: the Seattle Metropolitans were the first American team to win the Stanley Cup way back in 1917. The NHL wasn’t even a thing at that time, as it got started later that year. The city will finally have an NHL team starting with the 2021 – 2022 season, which will play at the New Arena in the Seattle Center.

14. Experience Discovery Park

While there are plenty of excellent green spaces in the Emerald City, Discovery Park really takes the cake. This is the largest park in the city and is home to around 12 miles of excellent trails. It also has beaches, sand dunes, cliffs, meadows, and much more. 

If it’s your first time at the park, your best bet is starting out with the Loop Trail. This 2.8 mile-long trail goes through the center of the park and branches out to other trails if you feel like exploring further. Try to make it all the way out to the West Point Lighthouse, where you can enjoy some incredible views of the mountains and water.

Discovery Park is located on Magnolia Bluff overlooking the Puget Sound, click here for directions. It’s definitely one of the most picturesque of all the Seattle attractions and is well worth the effort to reach.

15. Join an Underground Tour

Rounding out our list of fun things to do in Seattle is taking an interesting underground tour. 

Beneath The Streets is one of the most popular Seattle attractions. On this fun and educational tour, you’ll explore subterranean sidewalks and storefronts that were built on top of after the Great Fire of 1889. 

This one hour tour takes you beneath Seattle’s streets to explore three underground passageways, dating back to the 1890s. This highly-rated tour is fun for everyone and affordable at $21. Click here to learn more about the tour, or click the image below.

These are just some of the many Seattle attractions that await you. There’s a lot more going on in the Emerald City, including plenty of other parks, beaches, museums, tours, and a whole lot more. 

With some more time in Seattle, you can also take advantage of the many amazing day-trip opportunities. Within a few hours, you can find yourself exploring Mt. Rainier or Olympic National Park. Or perhaps you’d rather go visit a waterfall or soak in a hot spring. The options for adventure really are endless!

Here at Be the Star You Are!®, we are proud of the service of our volunteers. 2019 marks the 20th year of being a 501c3 charity dedicated to empowering women, families, and youth through improved literacy and increased positive media messages, and we have much to celebrate and for which to be grateful. Throughout the years we have collaborated with volunteers from numerous countries around the globe besides working with thousands from various states in America. The majority of our crew are teens and young adults with a few adults sprinkled in the mix.

Holiday season in full swing and digital marketers are focused on finishing out the year strong.

If in the U.S. and in B2B, pause your campaigns entirely for the whole second half of December.

So many of your users will be traveling, which causes available ad inventory to become depressed.

At the same time, all the big brand marketers are bidding up to finish the quarter strong, causing the competition to rise.

These two forces cause CPCs to spike considerably.

Meanwhile, every lead you do generate is worth less because inevitably they’ll all tell your sales team, “Let’s pick this conversation up after the New Year,” which means your leads will cool down considerably over the holidays.

So you pay more for the leads that are worth less.

It’s best to sit this season out.

Holidays are a great time for social marketers to get creative and think outside of the digital gift wrapping box.

Consider creating a pinnacle piece of content that really grabs the attention of your ideal customer and drives them to a desired action that excites both them and you.

You can then publish this content in multiple formats such as visual infographic, text with visuals on a blog post, YouTube video, Facebook Live video, Instagram and even a series of Instagram Stories.

This one piece of content could literally be the foundation for easily 20-50 pieces of content if done right.

Plus you’ll get tons of links back to your site and help in getting more attention and brand awareness by tapping into the power of the OPC (other people’s content and community).

Create limited-time offers to encourage customers to buy now.

Scarcity is a tried-and true tactic.

11. Andrea Vahl | Co-author of Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies

Use Facebook Ads to reach your “warm audience” with a special offer.

Holiday times are filled with promotions so you want to focus more on your “warm audience” by using retargeting tactics in Facebook Ads.

Create audiences for people who have visited your website, people who have watched your videos and people who are fans of your page and have a special offer just for them.

Plus with retargeting, you are going to capture the online shoppers who will then see your ad come up right away and remind them what they were looking at (which also makes it challenging to keep gifts a secret if you are browsing with your family nearby).

You will also save money by only advertising to a narrower group who is more likely to buy from you.

12. Logan Young | Cofounder at BlitzMetrics

In Q4 the cost of paid traffic will rise on social from increased competition.

Videos get lower CPM than static images so use short videos with strong CTAs to get a reasonable CPM while still getting conversions.

The holidays are a perfect time for giving.

Why not hold a contest or giveaway to get your audience to engage with you and hopefully also help spread the word about your business and contest?

Think of a prize that works with the holiday theme, but don’t forget about your own business goals either – try to come up with a prize and contest to help support your goals (more brand awareness, more engagement, more leads generated, etc.), while also being relevant in some way to the holiday season

Making Scents

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Marcus Cicero

With all of the disasters and tragedies of this year, logic seems to have disappeared. The senseless shootings of innocent people and the devastating California fires have rendered so many of us feeling helpless and hopeless. But in times of turbulence, besides the consolation of close relationships with family and friends, I advise my clients to turn to two things––gardens and books. 

The smoke from the Camp and Paradise fires has been so thick and suffocating, that spending time in the garden has been impossible. Continued alerts have been pinging on my cell phone warning me of the dangers of breathing toxins. The alerts advise avoiding being outdoors as the air quality is hazardous to our health. The sky is gray and gloomy with harmful haze reminiscent of Beijing.  When the sun pokes through the smoke, it is a roiling red.

To combat the noxious air, I have been freshening my home with the calming aromas of handcrafted potpourri and herbal sachets. Although making scents does require time and considerable cleanup, potpourri, wreaths, and sachets make beautiful hostess gifts and holiday decor. Be prepared for magnificent earthy scents wafting to your nostrils as you style your ingredients. To fashion your own rustic creations, choose sweet-smelling botanicals with strong colors that will dry well. If you enjoy burying your nose in a flower or herb, these are specimens for your project.

I also like to dry citrus rinds and add whole buds of small flowers to the mix. Remove petals from stems and dry on a cookie sheet. If you are in a hurry, you can heat your oven to 150-200 degrees and put the pan in the oven until the flowers are dry, but not cooked. I prefer to allow them to dry naturally on a counter in my garage as I find the fragrance is fuller and lasts longer. 

Once all the leaves, flowers, and herbs are dry, it’s time to design various “flavors” of potpourri. I make seasonal potpourri in varying color schemes and smells. For holiday scents, add cinnamon sticks, shaved nutmeg, or other spices.  You can also spritz the mixture with a few drops of your favorite essential oil and toss with your hands before adding the ingredients to jars, bowls, netting, or clear wrap to give as gifts.

As the name suggests, our Inman Connect conference isn’t just about great speakers, sessions and learning. It’s about building relationships, meeting new friends, and making those in-person connections to help you grow your business. With Inman Connect New York right around the corner in January, it’s never too early to start planning who you’d like to meet, and how you’re going to best use your time during the week.

1. Plan ahead

2. Have a goal

Many of the most successful agents employ a practice of meeting five new people every day either on or offline to grow their referral business, a technique that’s particularly effective over time. From a network growth perspective, that’s over 150 new people a month. It’s not about collecting business cards, but having this in mind when attending Connect can help to sharpen how best to use your time, and ensure that your time is being spent productively.

3. Sharpen your introduction

No elevator pitches, but having a strong, thoughtful answer to the question “what do you do?” will always be helpful in making those initial conversations that little bit easier. It’ll also help focus your thoughts on why you’d like to speak to that person, makes it more interesting for them, and how you might learn from each other.

If introductions are tough, conversation starters such as chatting about your favorite sessions, sharing business problems, or even just asking what the other person has seen in Times Square so far are always helpful.

4. Be a connector

Some of the best networkers act as glue between others, proactively making introductions for others, and putting folks together who might not know each other yet. This approach is particularly helpful for conversations at parties, where mixing and mingling is key.

For example, if you’re chatting with someone, and you see someone you know nearby, call them over and introduce them to who you’re speaking to. Remember, it’s not having a goal of what you want, it’s having a goal of what you can offer.

5. Don’t stick with what you know

For regulars at Connect, it’s easy (and fun) to spend time with those you’ve grown to know and love over the years. But look for those folks hanging out on their own, and pull those wallflowers into your group to say hello.

Don’t be afraid to add that extra person to your group’s dinner plans, or say hi in the coffee line to another person wearing one of our lanyards. You never know, that stranger behind you in line might just have the answer to the problem you’re working on back at the office.

6. Be an empathetic listener

Great networking isn’t about you, it’s about the strength of those network ties you can create in person, and how best to take them online afterwards. It’s not about pitching what you do, and it’s always bad for folks you’re chatting with to smell your commission breath.

Finding those personal points of connection are key, and powerful when they happen early in the conversation. And of course, this isn’t about work, it’s about sports, movies, family, travels, and just who you are as a people. Find those points of connective tissue, and strengthen those ties.

7. Don’t seek the next conversation

One of the worst ways to listen is to be looking around the room while the other person is talking to you. It sends a clear message that you’re no longer interested, and that you’re looking to move on. Smile when something resonates with you, and learn what makes the other person smile too. Ask the easy questions, but be respectful of the other person’s attention. Don’t monopolize, after all, they’re giving you their time too.

8. Be generous

As Keith Ferrazzi mentions, “the currency of real networking is not greed, but generosity” (Keith’s book Never Eat Alone is also well worth a read ahead of time). This doesn’t just mean paying the bill at dinner or buying a round of drinks of course, it means being generous with your most valuable asset, your time. 

Thirty minutes spent really getting to know someone is more effective that 30 minutes lightly getting to know 3. Relax, take the time, and build those connections one at a time.

9. Houseclean your online presence

This is an important one for those relationships you take online after you’ve met in person. Spruce up that LinkedIn profile with your most recent information, for example some recent projects you’ve worked on. Update that email signature, that Twitter bio, or that Facebook cover image. Spring cleaning your presence, especially your social presence, will be important to making that great second impression the day after.

10. Keep in touch

This is where the real test happens. Were you there to simply collect business cards and followers, or were you there to really make connections and grow your business? The strength of what happens afterwards is critical to how effective that networking really was for you, and the nature of how you keep in touch is important.

For example, don’t sell with the first follow-up email, just think of the follow-up as a continuation of your conversation. I’ve all too often received mails that go something like this “Hey Matthew! So great to meet you over drinks last night and chat about Game Of Thrones. If you’re ever looking to buy or sell in the metro area… etc.”

But most importantly, have fun!

If Maryland and Rutgers are this improved, the Big Ten East might be top-to-bottom better than the SEC West

Your weekly dive into college football’s most interesting numbers includes Penn State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Purdue, Colorado State, and more.

We overreact to what happens in bowl season in part because it’s the last thing we see for eight months.

Then we overreact to first-week performances for nearly the same reason: it’s the first thing we’ve seen in eight months. Just as Texas A&M’s Kenny Hill didn’t win the Heisman in 2014, and just as Texas wasn’t BACK!! after 2016’s Week 1 win over Notre Dame, these impressions won’t last.

USC’s Sam Darnold isn’t OVERRATED!! simply because he threw two picks against Western Michigan. Michigan’s young squad isn’t a national title contender only because it looked mostly awesome against Florida. The Big 12 isn’t in for another miserable season just because Baylor and Texas looked bad.

We can still glean something from the week, however.

We might not know who’s officially good or bad, but we know who had a good or bad week.

My S&P+ picks were dominant in Week 1, going 24-15-1 (61.3 percent) against the spread. But they still missed on certain teams.

Let’s see what we can learn by seeing how each conference fared compared to S&P+ projections.

Top 10 overachievers vs. FBS competition:

UCF (plus-32.8 points vs. FIU)

Maryland (plus-27.7 vs. Texas)

Wisconsin (plus-24.8 vs. Utah State)

Navy (plus-19.5 vs. FAU)

Stanford (plus-18.7 vs. Rice)

Purdue (plus-18.7 vs. Louisville)

Notre Dame (plus-17.5 vs. Temple)

Oklahoma State (plus-16.8 vs. Tulsa)

Buffalo (plus-15.3 vs. Minnesota)

Colorado (plus-14.8 vs. Colorado State)

Compared to expectations, the Big Ten was the conference with the best opening weekend.

Nine of 14 teams overachieved their projections, all by at least a touchdown, and Indiana’s underachievement came at the expense of overachieving conference mate Ohio State.

And yes, because the divisions weren’t imbalanced enough already, six of seven Big Ten East teams overachieved, while only four of seven Big Ten West teams underachieved.

Divisions are dumb. But if Maryland and Rutgers are both better than projected, and Indiana is as solid as it looked in the first 2.5 quarters or so against Ohio State, then the Big Ten East might challenge the SEC West as the best of the dumb divisions. (Of course, five of seven SEC West teams also overachieved.)

The ACC, on the other hand, had a forgettable first go-round.

Six of 14 teams in the reigning national champs’ conference overachieved, but two (BC and Georgia Tech) just barely did; of the eight underachievers, six missed the mark by at least nine points.

I was curious about how all the quarterback attrition would affect the conference, but only three of the six larger underachievers had new QBs. Florida State (minus-9.1 points), NC State (minus-10.3), and Louisville (minus-18.7) all boasted incumbents.

The best two conferences weren't actually conferences: powered by both Notre Dame and Army's dramatic overachievement (and despite BYU's lackluster play), independents have fared well thus far.

But the most surprising collection of teams was the service academies.

Army and Air Force destroyed Fordham and VMI, respectively, and Navy manhandled FAU. In all, the academies overachieved their projections by a cool 38.9 points per game.

They say that you want to play option teams in the first week of the year, when you’ve had extra time to prepare. These results, combined with Georgia Tech gaining 615 yards on Tennessee, would suggest otherwise.

16 gains of 20-plus yards for Oklahoma State and Penn State

In my 2017 preview series, I basically called two teams the funnest in the country: Oklahoma State and Penn State. There’s an obvious common thread there: big plays. Both teams like to go long early and often. So I thought it would be fun in this Numerical to occasionally check in on this explosive duo.

In OSU’s 59-24 win over Tulsa, the Cowboys snapped the ball just 63 times but managed to rip off seven gains of 20-plus yards and six of 40-plus.

In PSU’s 52-0 win over Akron, the Nittany Lions snapped the ball 65 times and gained 20-plus yards nine times. Alas, only two of those gains went for 40-plus.

Advantage: Pokes.

Minus-544 yards, plus-8 points

The SEC scored a pair of nice wins over the ACC when South Carolina took down NC State, 35-28, and Tennessee defeated Georgia Tech, 42-41, in double overtime.

These wins were as confusing as they were useful. NC State more than doubled up South Carolina's yardage (504-246), and Georgia Tech nearly did the same to Tennessee (655-369). How do you gain 1,159 yards, allow just 615, and go 0-2? Very carefully.

For NC State, the oddity centered around ball control and blown chances. The Wolfpack scored touchdowns on drives of 14, nine, 10, and nine yards, while South Carolina needed just five plays to score twice early in the second half. The Gamecocks also scored on the game's opening kickoff, while State had scoreless drives end at the SC 10, 12, and 31. Allowing your opponent to punch itself out, then pouncing on mistakes: the Will Muschamp Way. The Gamecocks generated 20 yards in their final six possessions. Didn't matter.

For Tech, it was a similar story. The Yellow Jackets controlled the ball in the maddening way we're used to seeing from a Paul Johnson option team. They seemed to be killing Tennessee with a million paper cuts, but after taking a 21-7 lead in the third quarter, they lost a fumble at the Vols' seven and had a 36-yard field goal blocked at the end of regulation.

Tennessee did a better job of consolidating its successes. The Vols punted six times to Tech's three, and five of those were of the three-and-out variety. They only moved the ball more than 23 yards in three possessions; all three resulted in touchdowns.

None of this was even slightly pretty. And we'll see if it's replicable. But the SEC East claimed two wins it really needed all the same.

A 319.8 passer rating for Jesse Ertz

The Big 12 was all over the map, with lots of good (Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, TCU) and two awful (Texas, Baylor) performances. But one thing was certain: it was very Big 12.

Check out the top passers in the country per passer rating. Four of the top seven and five of the top 11 are Big 12 quarterbacks*. Branding is important.

Kansas State's Jesse Ertz and OU's Baker Mayfield went a combined 29-for-36 passing for 662 yards, seven touchdowns, no interceptions. Overwhelmed opposition or not, that's impressive.

* Missouri’s Drew Lock is fourth on the list, and with the Tigers’ 72-43 win over Missouri State, it appears the Tigers are going to attempt quite the Big 12 tribute this fall. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if Texas Tech joined the SEC, now’s your chance to find out.

Purdue’s 35-28 loss to Louisville in head coach Jeff Brohm’s debut was encouraging. The Boilermakers not only went 0-13 against ranked teams in Darrell Hazell’s four-year tenure; they lost 10 of those 13 by double digits (and six by at least 20 points).

It was also encouraging in that we saw an identity taking shape. Sure, the Boilermakers were lucky to be within seven; they recovered four of the game's five fumbles, they were outgained by 180 yards, and they benefited severely from Louisville instability (three fumbles, all lost, plus 16 penalties). Still, they kept attacking, and on both sides of the ball.

They hit hard and hurried UL quarterback Lamar Jackson frequently. (Unfortunately, they could never quite bring him down behind the line of scrimmage.) Ja'Whaun Bentley forced two fumbles, T.J. McCollum had two QB hurries and a breakup, and Danny Ezechukwu had an interception and a breakup.

On offense, they passed. And passed, and passed, and passed. In all, they dropped back 61 times (with four sacks) to 17 intended rushes. Six players caught at least three passes, and Jackson Anthrop (seven catches, 82 yards, two scores) emerged as a solid possession guy.

Granted, things went awry. Starting quarterback David Blough threw two shaky picks in the second half and was replaced by Elijah Sindelar, and eventually the Boilermakers’ turnovers luck dissipated.

You have to start somewhere. And by defining the game -- nice run defense you've got there, Louisville; you're not going to get to use it today -- they're going to give at least a couple of solid opponents fits. One game into the Brohm era, and it seems like Purdue fans have a little bit of hope.

Colorado State fans did not enjoy their Friday night experience in Denver.

Colorado lost its top three defensive linemen, three of its top four linebackers, two stud defensive backs, and a stud coordinator in Jim Leavitt. The Buffaloes' first game since was against a Colorado State offense that gained 525 yards and scored 58 points a week earlier against Oregon State.

Naturally, the Buffaloes allowed ... three points. There was a bend-don't-break aspect there -- CSU drove into CU territory six times and lost two turnovers inside the Buffs' 30. Still, they held CSU to 116 rushing yards (sans sacks) and allowed Nick Stevens just a 51 percent completion rate. Star receiver Michael Gallup caught just five of 11 passes for 67 yards. Isaiah Oliver and combined to defense seven passes.

That CU won wasn't a surprise; the game was a tossup on paper, and the Buffs have now won four of their last five against the Rams. That CU won this way, however, was jarring.

Runner up in the “You allowed how many points??” category: Vanderbilt. The Commodores were a slight favorite at MTSU and won, but the way they won was still a surprise. Against a Blue Raider offense that returned quarterback Brent Stockstill and receiver Richie James and gained 1,090 yards in two games against SEC opponents (VU and Missouri) last year, they gave up just 240 yards (4.2 per play) in a 28-6 win.

Granted, the Blue Raiders had some rebuilding to do on their offensive line, and they were without star running back I’Tavius Mathers as well, but this was dominant. James did his damage (12 targets, 10 catches, 112 yards, and two carries for 14 yards), but in the 43 snaps that didn’t involve James, MTSU gained just 114 yards. Without star linebacker Zach Cunningham, Vandy allowed less than half of the yards it allowed to MTSU in 2016. Consider that a nice start.
