Part of me yearns to know more about Alyx as a character, what her childhood was like, what the Vance family was like before the resonance cascade, and most importantly, just what the significance is of her mother Azian...

One of my favourite cut dialogue from HL2 was from Eli in Black Mesa East, which gives a lot more context for Azian's story and greater role in Half-Life:

"We were living in base housing, you know. When I made it back there right before the end, I found only Alyx. She had her mother's wedding ring in her hand, but she couldn't tell me how she'd gotten it. Those days are blank for her. Sometimes I wish it were the same for me.

"I can still only guess what might have happened to my wife. One of the missing. One of the millions who were lost. "

It just DEEPENS the mystery so much. What's the importance of Azian? Did she leave voluntarily? It seems so because of the ring, but why? Was the Gman involved? Almost certainly but what did he want with her? Is she still alive? If so where is she???? What HAPPENED????????

I love the story of this series so much, and I fear that we'll never see the day that we have our answers questioned.

mm I wish there was more Azian and Eli content. This man lost his wife someone he clearly loved deeply. But who was she? How did the two meet? Why did Eli fall in love with her? What kind of activities did they do with Alyx?

Did her mother ever tuck her into bed and kiss her goodnight?

We know that alyx has her mother's eyes and that Azian would be proud of her...losing her mom had such a lasting impact on alyx and obviously Eli her freaking husband I just wish there was more to her character than one image and her death.

Did Gordon ever meet her even if briefly?

Sometimes I imagine Alyx asking Gordon that question when it's just the two of them sitting alone together somewhere quiet.

noncanon but originally Alyx was found by Eli after the Black Mesa incident holding her mother's wedding ring.

i rlly like the idea that the G-man was either taunting Eli that he could have saved his wife as well, or that he fails to understand human relationships and thinks the artifact of their union would be what Eli wants to survive Black Mesa rather than the person herself

one night while pondering azian vance's history and personality and esteemed deeds i thought abt that one anecdote about how ann duryan and carl sagan fell in love while working on the voyager golden record and thought it'd be cute for them if they had a similar experience before signing on with black mesa. like, they got signed as a package deal, both of them up and coming physicists with some hot thesis on ok i think it'd be kind of sweet if it had to do with gravity somehow. that perhaps an early version of the gravity gun was imagined by the two of them, and black mesa was interested in it for its utility in handling hazardous materials. what if

Azian Vance Fact List:

- is of malaysian descent

- Married to Eli Vance

- Wore the necklace seen on Alyx (the one she is seen often touching absentmindedly indicating it holds a great deal of comfort and sentimental value)

- Occupation unknown but lived at Black Mesa with her daughter and husband

- Green (or hazel ig) eye color (same as Alyx indicated by Breen) EDIT: IK SHE TECHNICALLY HAS GREEN EYES BUT EVEN THE OFFICAL RANDOMLY.GIVES HER BRIWN EYES SOMWTKMES

Idk I'm thinking about Alyx and Azian a bit rn while I'm in the car and I'm very sad that Alyx's mom isn't a proper character in the games

Because I'm thinking about Alyx and how like, because Azian died when she was so young she probably doesn't have any memories that were actually hers (if I recall correctly Azian died when Alyx is around 4?). If she has any memories of her mom they're likely fuzzy and overshadowed by everything else that's happened in her life.

And my point is like. There's a special kind of tragedy I feel to losing someone that you never got the chance to know and never got to have that person see you come into your own that at the same time was supposed to be this big important figure in your life. Alyx has all these stories from her dad, and I like to think Eli's salvaged what movies and songs and books and pictures he had of Azian and what they used to enjoy together and showed them to Alyx when he got the chance but. I feel like her grief for Azian at this point is just. Regret that she didn't get to know her, knowledge that her mom was a great person, but overall it's a more dull grief that it is when she loses Eli because she had more of him than she ever had of her mom.
