Me: hm, I want something to put on the TV as background noise... Huh. Looks like YouTube is recommending something called The Last Unicorn. That's perfect, it's probably some old shitty animation that has aged poorly! I can watch it ironically!
Me, 2 hours later as the credits roll: *crying, cheering, buying the book, composing the songs*
Me, 2 weeks later: So I have compiled all of the quotes from the book that I think could make good tattoos, and also, HOW HAVE I NEVER LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE LAST UNICORN FUCKING SLAPS??? This gay-ass little fairytale fed my soul! Watered my crops! Transed my gender! Can't believe I heard of this story from youtube recommendations, of all places!!
#original#the last unicorn#tlu#peter s beagle#molly gru#schmendrick#schmendrick the magician#two of my favorite characters in anything right there in the center of the story! and I'm glad I saw the film first!#my reading ability has diminished due to trauma disability etc. but it seems like having a visual reference actually really helped!#no wonder i only ever want to read fan fic! turns out reading is not actually Superior to other types of Storytelling. it's just different.#to say otherwise is snobbishness I have been eminently guilty of in my life!#but like it is easier for me to consume tv and movies and that is fine actually. also that's why I'm doing a graphic novel lol#because i wanted to make something i would actually be able to read if i found it at a library. altho the audio book IS gonna be bomb#the audiobook is for visually impaired readers and anyone who wants or needs it! accessible stories for everyone! yeah!!#my gender was already transed but now I've gained an ADDITIONAL gender! which one? I'll never tell 😘#i am so powerful i have so much fuckin gender. my wife has no gender. and she is equally as powerful.#and also she has STUDIED THE BLADE#mostly zoro's blades from One Piece#normally YouTube recommends me shit movies like idiocracy or smth this is like if every day ur cat brought you a piece of rotten food and#then one day it brings you a BEAUTIFULLY ANIMATED TALE FEATURING MY BELOVED TWINK FUCK-UP WIZARD FRIEND AND MY ALL-TIME HOMEGIRL MOLLY GRU#and also it's soft and beautiful and funny and fucking weird!! i wrote melodies to the songs in the books on my ukulele

love is checking out materials from the university library that have nothing to do with your field of work so your partner can exhaustively research meiji-era homosexuality for their fanfiction

#art#ive literally just been treating this game as a library simuator#i walk from bookseller to bookseller opening up all of their books#vivecs sermons are either a highlight or the point at which i stop reading#ive been trying to convince the ordinators that imitation is the highest form of flattery but it hasnt been working#let me wear your helmets please theyre so funny..#posting morrowind in 2024 isnt a cry for help but youre not wrong to be concerned.#morrowind#almalexia#vivec#im going to explain the chitin armor give me a moment#so the bonewalker nerevar on the shrines is adorable and it was only after drawing it however many times that i realized#it looked relatively close to a modified chitin armor#and so i modified chitin armor a few times and this was probably the cutest result#i also know i drew almalexia relatively pristine and untouched by years and vivec not so much but my thought process was#vivecs role as if not a favorite then the most accessible divine or the most “hands on” in a manner of speaking#acting in ways visible to the general population or actions explicitly brought to their attention#like not that almalexia isnt doing anything she is#but the dissemination of information regarding that is very different etc etc etc#anyways to a certain extent a god is the face on a shrine or in art or upon a statue or carving#but vivecs presence is interwoven with the geography of vvardenfell especially and his actions and writings with pubished materials#and the arts and culture and customs etc etc etc#so to me the face of a god you know and feel a commonality with or a god that walks alongside you is a face you would recognize#and vivec is already otherworldly looking enough#the simple mark of the years on his skin in some way grounding him in reality felt more right#that and i think the ways in which he and almalexia care about outward appearance are slightly different- they prioritize different things#and the ways they present outward power and their embodiment of their respective attributes share some similarities as they both have that#important preoccupation with physical power and physical strength to a certain degree#oh my god nobody read this i am yapping so bad.#tes

I feel like in 10 to 20 years there is going to be a "genre" of cult classics that consists of abandoned first seasons of netflix shows with great world building, amazing relatively unknown young actors and hints of or actual queer representation. And I'm gonna be in the comments of the youtube essay about it, remembering them all with the same feeling i have about firefly.

i absolutely haven't started copying down my copy of Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse into a drive, and i certainly am not making it accessible to other people via an open link. why would i do that.... anyway here's the Leila Vennewitz translation that i'm scanning in chapter by chapter because @perplexingly made me aware it's harder to find in person and online in some places, and i also know @impmansloot hasn't read this translation yet. give me time to scan it all in, my equipment is older and hanging on by a thread. it's in jpeg format to save space and time, pdf was too large and difficult to access but you can convert it yourself if you want 👍
enjoy the first chapter my loves 🫶

There's nothing like the audiobook experience of driving down the road going into hysterics over a 150-year-old novel.
#so it turns out that for some reason i have access to a selection of audible audiobooks#they seem to be all classics which is just fine with me#it gives me access to more obscure classics that my library doesn't have#read by professional actors instead of some monotone guy on librivox#(some librivox narrators are great unfortunately the one reading trollope isn't one of them)#and anyway audio is turning out to be a great way to experience 'doctor thorne'#if you zone out during the long and absurdly wordy passages it's okay#and then the dialogue (aka: the good stuff) can be elevated to high comedy levels by a good actor#the election speeches had me in stitches#especially since they're frequently interrupted by hecklers#which i'm sure plays much better in audio than on the page#also the experience with trollope is once again turning out to be#slogging through several chapters of extremely dry scene-setting#with only a few glimmers of interesting characters to keep me interested#until suddenly i'm deeply invested in these people's silly small-town drama#and gasping out 'mr. moffatt did what??'#also i dearly love when someone i expect to be a bland stereotype turns out to be a character with personality#miss dunstable is my favorite character so far#i fully expected the 'rich heiress that the hero's supposed to marry instead of the poor heroine'#to just be snobby and rude#and instead she's so much fun!#genuine friends with the hero but zero romantic interest in him#very witty very sensible#i'm less than halfway through so i don't know if opinions will change#but for right now i'm glad to have the audiobook to push through the slog chapters#(what was the point of the dinner party scene?? you literally stopped three plotlines dead in their tracks)#(to show a character going to a boring party with characters who have no effect on the story)#because i need to see how this story plays out#doctor thorne#anthony trollope

SORRY FOR USING THE NEWS MEME I DIDN'T KNOW HOW ELSE TO GET YA'LLS ATTENTION!
Okay so this post is for Artists that are trying to save some money while vending at conventions.
A few cons that I've gone to have been charging extra for wifi access. (Extra costs?! In THIS economy??) This has lead to some artists/vendors paying the extra cost to use said wifi, or to use their phones as a hotspot (your phone bill!! nooo!!!) or having to switch to cash only (you might lose on sales! also having to do MORE math? plus the trips to the bank to get change?? 😭).
May I present to you: Library Hotspots!
This, of course, hinges on your local library having said service. Luckily, a good chunk of them do! Check your local library if they have hotspots to borrow. If they don't- ask them wtf why not? (DON'T ACTUALLY DO THAT. Write them a nice email saying you're a patron that is interested in this service. That will show their administration that they should invest in hotspots).
Okay so you've checked your library's website and it DOES have hotspots you can borrow- what now? Check the policy for borrowing their hotspots! They often let you know how long you can borrow the hotspot for AND you might be able to request one through an online form. (Listen I get phone anxiety so this is a bonus for me). Now all you have to do is wait to get a notification to pick up your hotspot, pick it up, test it out with your vending equipment (important step!), take it with you to your next convention/vendor event, use it, and finally bring it back to the library once you're done!
okay okay okay so those were a lot of steps. BUT! would you rather be saddled with unexpected costs of having to pay for convention wifi? I sure wouldn't with how expensive everything is already 😭
You might be thinking: "Weirdo-Librarian, why are you telling me this? What do you get out of this?" Well-

You know a game is absolutely peak fiction when you can't even find it on the appstore + it's not available on your device + every download attempt gets firmly denied because the game dev can only make new games and Never update the older ones causing them to go out of commission and straight be inaccessible through any possible source. OH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. MATCHING BROTHER KILLINGS <3. also FUCK yes i knew it i knew it was gonna go full hamlet. chefs kiss. the Parallels and Themes are simply too good in this bit i cant. a fight between ghosts !!!
YES!!!!! the ways in which Damen and Laurent mirror each other KILLS ME!!! in a good, i'm on my hands and knees shaking and trembling, way.
they've come full circle. prince-killer. king-killer. brother-killer. laurent's brother was killed and he was left with his traitor uncle, who's now dead. damen's father was killed and he was left with his traitor brother, who's now dead. they're both orphan kings, now. they're both haunted in such a way they're uniquely situated to understand each other

#recently read March 25
Projections by S E Porter. The ghost of a young woman murdered by a jealous sorcerer narrates his continued destructive obsession and her quest for revenge. *An effectively constructed look at toxic masculinity, could've been shorter imo.
Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao. After waking the legendary lost emperor, Zetian is forced to play along as his empress until they can overthrow the gods. *Was not expecting all the labor theory tbh but sure. A real 'leftist man who won't do the dishes' situation.
Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-Zi. Novel pretending to be translated autofiction by a Japanese visitor to colonial Taiwan, documenting her fraught relationship with her local interpreter. *Fun with metafiction, explores the limitations of translation and affection between colonizer and colonized.
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. A hacker and a courier team up to stop the release of a virus meant to hack people's brains. *Definitely helpful to read to orient me to other works in the genre but boy was it written by a white man in the early 90s.
Look Again by Elizabeth Trembley. Graphic memoir illustrating how the author's recollection of finding a corpse in the woods changed with each retelling, and how trauma impacts our memory.
Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky. A professor and political dissident is sent to a labor camp searching for the lifeforms that created signs of civilization on an alien world. *Tchaikovsky really loves speculative xenobiology huh. Also appreciated the full throated radicalism.
Magus of the Library by Mitsu Izumi. A young outcast trains to become one of the elite librarians who maintain the world's fragile peace. *My coworkers keep recommending library mangas. I didn't follow everything but the most recent volume featured the librarians debating their role in providing or restricting access to texts that foment bigotry and violence, which is a discussion our profession continues to have.
