Voices that I think are suitable for some versions of Godzilla.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imma be real with you all, most of the Godzillas would be sharing the same voice, I just didn't feel like using the same character more than once. Also Killer Croc and Hellboy aren't just KingGoji and SoshingekiGoji, they're supposed to be Showa Godzilla as a whole, Killer Croc being 1955-1964, and Hellboy being 1965-1975. A few other things I would like to say, I don't imagine Shin Godzilla having a voice at all, MireGoji, GiraGoji, and KiryuGoji, don't have independent voices yet, Godzilla from the animated series would most likely have a Spider-Man voice claim, ToraGoji would have both a male and female voice claim because officially the 1998 version of Godzilla is male but I like to think of her as female, I still don't have any voices in mind for Hanna Barbera Godzilla, Godzilla Ultima, Marvel Godzilla, Gemstone Godzilla, and Minus 1 Godzilla. As for other Kaiju, I like to think of Anguirus having the same voice as the Grunts from Halo because Anguirus just gives me silly little guy vibes, I like that everyone agrees that Kong is Kratos so now I feel that that any version of Kong before GvK is young Kratos and I'm just thinking about the whole Kendrick meme, Kiryu would be Robocop, Heisei Mechagodzilla would be Liberty Prime, the first Showa Mechagodzilla would be Frank Horrigan but after Quazies' Terror of Mechagodzilla animation, I couldn't decide whether I want the nihilistic killer or alcoholic robot so the second Showa Mechagodzilla is Bender from Futurama. I was thinking about Monster X having an Arbiter voice claim but now I think Darth Vader works better, Megalon is either Bane from the Harley Quinn show, Patrick Star, or Demoman from TF2, I'm still not sure for Gemstone Megalon, Millennium Mothra and Monsterverse Mothra are both Jade from the HBO Spawn series but I also see Monsterverse Mothra as Cortana, Gigan is currently just Slipstream from Transformers Animated because I have decided that Gigan is a girl and you can't stop me but I still need a male alternative because Gigan is a canonically a dude sooo...¯\_(ツ)_/¯, Orga would be Shockwave from Transformers Prime, Destoroyah would probably be Kano from Mortal Kombat 2021 or TF2 Sniper because for some odd reason I imagine Destoroyah being Australian, as for King Ghidorah...idk Showa Ghidorah is Megatron from Beast Wars and Ni might be Bill Cipher but still not sure. Damn, here my ass making a whole paragraph, I'm not even onto something, I'm just yapping, why couldn't I put this much energy in school? Anyway feel free to tell me what voices y'all think are suitable for Godzilla and the rest of the Kaiju, maybe give me a few recommendations on some voice claims or something, idk dawg did I cook here or did I burn down the whole kitchen?

"Beast Wars: Transformers" (1998) is the first time that I've seen the "protoform" (changeable base form of a transformer underneath their animal, vehicle, or robot forms) and "spark" (transformer's heart/soul that differentiates them from ordinary machines) concepts. G1 didn't appear to have these elements (at least in the original series, I don't know about any additional content in the form of comics or books). These concepts that go on to be vital aspects of other Transformers media just also happen to be in a series asking the question: "What if there was an AU where Megatron was a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Optimus Prime was a Gorilla?"

10 characters, 10 fandoms
Tagged by @greypetrel thank you! This looks fun, though idk if I'll reach 10 knowing my very few hyperfixations 😂
Tagging @lush-specimen @torisfeather @dangerouslyclassyhottub @emikokiichigo101 @selanaris @notebooks-and-laptops and YOU, the reader
1. Whirl - Transformers (IDW)
Tumblr media
Listen. He's insane, he adopts a murderous shape-shifting creature as his daughter, he's got high heels, he spent most of the comic playing matchmaker despite saying he doesn't do "relationships", he provoked a war, he becomes best friends with the guy he tried to kill (and vice versa), he's a war criminal but since they're all war criminals it doesn't mean much lmao. Do I have to say more?
2. Batman (played Robert Pattinson) - Batman 2022
Tumblr media
Batman but he's a soggy wet emo cat. Wanna wrap him in a blanket and listen to My Chemical Romance together.
3. Jaskier - The Witcher (TV)
Tumblr media
Honestly he's the only reason I'm in this fandom lol. Bard but he's a damsel in distress. Let's put him in situations.
4. Fenris - Dragon Age II
Tumblr media
Kiss me already, you handsome broody elf with a tortured past.
5. Belle - Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Tumblr media
Me? Projecting on a beloved character from my teen years? It's more likely than you think :3
6. Mulan - Mulan 1998
Tumblr media
Projecting again? Projecting again.
7. Papyrus - Undertale
Tumblr media
Beloved character and beloved video game who introduced me to the concept of fandom as a whole and to my very first fanfictions.
8. Tzipporah - Prince of Egypt
Tumblr media
Absolute queen. It's a movie I watch over and over with pleasure, and she's my favourite character.
9. Zagreus - Hades Supergiant
Tumblr media
...I think the GIF speaks for itself XD
10. Giant - The Iron Giant
Tumblr media
Shut up I'm not crying over a robot who doesn't want to kill SHUT UP I'M NOT--

"Okay, so let me explain in detail the nuances of the Transformers Beast Wars toyline from 1996 through 1998..."
You have been possessed by a demon. Instead of panicking, you realize an important truth: you're trapped in your own body with a demon at the wheel, but you're still in the car, and you have the power to make them regret every single second they spend with you.

Tigatron Was Gay Accidentally
Transformers is a franchise with queer characters (now), mostly due to people who grew up with the series getting involved in making it. I’ve talked about the way that animation errors led to the creation of Acid Storm, a genderfluid Transformer, and the way that Starscream’s gay coding created trans subtext.
But what about the first Gay Transformers?
Now, understand here, I don’t know if this is first. I’m sure there are ways that more authoritive voices can get ahead of me on this one. There are after all, lines of continuity that reach back to 1982 and it’s possible that two robots in say, Kingdom kiss and that’s meant to be how things were back then, as well. Quite frankly, Megatron and Optimus are coded like a pair of extremely bitter exes at times.
But, I think I can point to the earliest gay pair of Transformers.
Spoiler Warning for Beast Wars in 1996, like you care.
In 1996, the Transformers series of the hour was Beast Wars, a show that I’m not showing screenshots of because it feels mean. It was a full CGI show, and one I love because the central character Dinobot. This is your typical Transformers piece of media, with a narrative just engaging enough to keep kids tuning in and cheap enough to keep getting made, and anything good is a byproduct of, basically, an accident. Ask me about the Golden Lagoon sometime. One of the things the show could do to shake things up a little and continue the important task of presenting kids with ads is to introduce new characters, and the conceit for that in Beast Wars was a chain of floating Transformers in pods waiting to crash on earth and get a new form.
One such story hook was Tigatron, in Episode 7 of season 1. Tigatron took the form of a tiger, and then, to not upset the status quo too much, he took to a life out in the northern frozen parts of the world. Up there, he occasionally contacted the Maximals (‘good guys’) with things that needed help or that they wanted to know about, and showed up in stories as a sometimes food, like grapes or something.
Tigatron wound up forming a friendship with Airazor, a lady that turned into a big cool hawk (Animorphs joke), and the two eventually, as loners isolated from the rest of the group, formed a relationship, then eventually fell in love. This is one of the two romance stories I remember of Beast Wars, the other being Silverbolt, a goodie team boy, and Black Arachnia, a baddie team girl. But you might notice in both cases, I’ve mentioned boys who get with girls, or girls with boys (I’m a feminist), and that’s not a good indicator of gayness.
See, in Japan, Airazer was dubbed as a boy.
And like, you can change dialogue in a dub, you can change the style of a thing when you can control the dialogue, you can change what characters say, but you sure have a hard time explaining when the characters hold hands, embrace and near-kiss (because the models are not doing that well with this era of CG). Rather than try and work around it, the Japanese dub just had the episode Other Visits (Season 2, episode 32, February 1998) open with Airazor pivoting from the brotherly ward of Samurai Ronin Tigatron to just straight acting super gay with him.
This puts the introduction of Tigatron, the earlier guy in that relationship, in 1996. Airazor was introduced in 1996, too, but the relationship itself – for two mostly offscreen characters – was something of a slow boil. That puts our first gay characters in 1996, and their relationship forming fully in 1998. Was it good writing? Was it a good gay relationship? Lords no, I’ve heard nothing but criticism for the kind of gayness Male Airazor has, which is a big shift from the cool flyboy persona Femme Airazor has. I’m sure there’s something deeply disappointing to my plane nerd expert friend where a cool lady pilot flyboy becomes a mincing queer boy when you can just have both if you play your cards right.
You can talk about gayness in Transformers in a deliberately obtuse way because, haha, you fool, the Transformers are alien robots, do they even have gender and sexuality? To which I say: Shut up, you’re stupid, you’re not helping the conversation, go home Jeremy. I don’t know if you’re called Jeremy, but I knew a Jeremy around this time and he was a tool, so he’s the standin.
That Transformers can be treated as a mystically genderless space where all relationships are queerer on a deeper level than we express in our mere world of meat is a backfill and you know it. The Transformers were very cis hetero media, coded for male children by men who wanted to sell toys to boys and the whole exercise is very deliberately gendered and coded that way. Transformers are, by default, boys, and that’s an old way of doing things but it’s undeniably true. There’s a reason why the boys outnumber the girls even now something like 10:1.
With that in mind, then, knowing that the story is not an actual documentary about a science fiction universe and is instead an outgrowth of a cis hetero society, then yeah. Transformers are boys and as the boys get older or interested in girls, that gets to be their one special interest, like Elita 1 and Optimus’ relationship, or Arcee’s and Springer’s (or was it Hot Rod’s) relationship.
Airazor only got to be gay because of Japan, and only because of the peculiarities of how the show got made. After all, this isn’t something that I imagine anyone anticipated coming up, and the decision to have Airazor get really gay in response to the change in the status quo was probably a byproduct of the show not being made with the Japanese dub studio’s input. After all, there’s nothing unsafe in what was being done in America, and the dubbers weren’t doing anything unsafe themselves until they suddenly were. There’s a lot of competing theories as to why, a lot of possible reasons, but nobody can prove them. And Airazor and Tigatron have been a fixture of a relationship in the comics, too – where she shows up, he tends to, too. It’s legitimately interesting in that Airazor is one of the more long-running fleshed-out women in Transformers (by dint of sheer age) and that brings with it the queerness of Tigatron thanks to someone not liking the cool lady.
You can obviously harmonise this with her being trans now, and Tigatron being bi or pan.
This is just another node in a long line on the chart that shows Transformers is a place where really cool and interesting things happen, but often, largely by accident.

Dinobot Triceradon
"It's better to have stood your ground and lost than never to have stood at all."
This version of Triceradon was released as part of a series of three two-packs in the Dinobots Walmart exclusive line, around 2002-2003 by my estimate. Not much was clear about them, but they were eventually assigned to the RiD continuity (and thus, kind of in the G1 continuity as I mentioned for Rail Racer).
Not much lore specific to this Triceradon was ever given. However, there was a different Triceradon introduced in Beast Machines (around 1998 by my estimate), and later continued in Universe. So the way I see it, these are more or less the same individual.
When Dinobot died during Beast Wars, his Spark rejoined the Well of All Sparks. Here, his experiences and the genetic code of his "Hollywood Velociraptor" beast mode were logged, analyzed, and dissected by the god-computer, Vector Sigma. When Beast Megatron returned from the past and unleashed both the transformation-lock virus and his Vehicon drones, a group of survivors separate from Optimus Primal's group fled into the depths of Cybertron. There, they found the Oracle, an interface to Vector Sigma. The survivors were reformatted into new biomechanical* forms, with prehistoric beast modes, and rendered them immune to the transformstion-lock: a fusion of ancient might and Cybertronian advancement. Thus, the Dinobots were made. They worked as a resistance force within the conquered Cybertron, until some of them got abducted by Unicron into the Universe War. After this, some of them, Triceradon included, would return home and help train a new generation of Dinobots. Or at least, that's how I envision the Dinobots line integrating with the separate Beast Machines character.
Triceradon transforms into a triceratops (no points for guessing that), but also has a "trap mode", being a dead triceratops with exposed flesh and bone. This is a leftover from Guiledart, the first use of the mold. Most of the dinosaur Predacons from Beast Wars Neo had these trap modes.
If the timeline I suggested is correct, that would mean that Guiledart might have some sort of Cybertronian genetic link to Triceradon, as Triceradon's time was long before Guiledart's in-universe, though Guiledart's toy came before BM Triceradon.
Funny enough, RiD Triceradon still has a BM Dinobots styled spark crystal, it just has an Autobot insignia stamped on top of it

On the one hand, the 2017 film version of Beauty and the Beast is another victim in the film trend of needlessly and shamelessly remaking animated films or children's stories for the sake of earning easy revenue and capitalizing on current film trends in the modern, soulless Hollywood studio system. Liberals also seized the opportunity with the remake to exploit diversity and promote some liberal values within the Beauty and the Beast universe (to be noted that the story takes place in France in the 1700s, if not even before). The final result of the diversity inclusion in the cast of characters is that it feels self-congratulatory in the sense of putting it all in for the sake of having it, rather than having it be just a part of the story and the film. One notable example is the filmmakers' decision to make LeFou, Gaston's diminutive and bumbling sidekick, a homosexual who is conflicted with his feelings for Gaston (although it should be noted that in the actual script, it was never actually specified that LeFou was homosexual.[7]). This resulted in AFA's One Million Moms division responding to the change by calling for a boycott of the movie. At the end of the film, LeFou is shown taking a romantic interest in a musketeer who is now a transgender woman after being transformed into one during Gaston's siege of the Beast's castle. Not only is it an atrocious and needless artistic decision of the filmmakers to needlessly incorporate diversity simply for the sake of it, but the 2017 film version of Beauty and the Beast also serves as an example that liberals can legitimately shoehorn the homosexual agenda into Disney films. Adding salt to the wound, the filmmakers also further changed history to suit their feminist agenda, similar to previous Disney films like Mulan (1998), Pocahontas (1995) and The Princess and the Frog (2009) (most infamously, the villagers are shown to be explicitly intolerant of Belle learning how to read and teaching girls to do the same, smashing her washing machine in the process, despite the fact that the namesake for the village in this film, Mdm. Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, the original author for the fairy tale, was herself a woman). The 2017 film version of Beauty and the Beast is now even more of a feminist propaganda film than the 1991 animated film version ever was. There were also hints at an anti-war message due to Gaston being turned into a war veteran.
On the other hand, there were also several surprisingly Conservative messages in the film, significantly more than in the 1991 version. Namely, Christianity is treated in a far more positive light in this film than in the 1991 version as one of the few friends Belle has in this version is the village Chaplain named Pere Robert who is shown to be sympathetic to her bibliophilic nature and also attempts to prevent Maurice from being sent to the Asylum, and later is shown to be horrified at the formation of the mob against the Beast (it is to be noted that in the original 1991 film, the character in question was merely a bookseller, not a priest, and most of the villagers, implied to be devout Christians, were demonized in the film), which was also surprisingly accurate to history despite the aforementioned changing of history in the film (in real history, Christianity, especially the Catholic Church, actively encouraged literacy, writing, and arithmetic among both genders, with girls being taught in convents or at the home). In addition, Maurice actually is shown to be more proactive in this film, such as directly refusing Gaston's attempt at marrying Belle and even attempting to expose Gaston as an attempted murderer and psychopath, and also plays a direct role in saving Belle and himself from the paddywagon after she exposes Beast to the villagers (in the original film, although he does set out to try and find Belle and save her after trying to get the villagers to help failed, he ultimately required saving by her due to catching an illness during his trek, and ultimately needed saving alongside Belle via Chip).
In addition, Lumière as well as the featherduster (named Plumette in this version) are shown to be an actual loving couple (in the original film, this was just hinted, although Lumière seemed more of a womanizer and the featherduster sexually loose), and the remake also doesn't demonize traditional marriage (notably, the remake cut out Gaston's inappropriate wedding proposal as well as Belle shoving Gaston into mud in front of attendees). The forgiveness and redemption theme was also significantly more emphasized in the remake, due to Beast ultimately forgiving Maurice after learning why he had tried to steal the rose and even allowing Belle to save Maurice specifically to make up for his past behavior, with Maurice also forgiving Beast upon Belle showing him the baby rattle. It is also shown to be significantly more pro-family as well, as not only is Belle shown to be loyal to her father like in the 1991 original, but as noted above, Maurice himself took measures to protect Belle and notably agreed with Belle that Gaston would not have worked out for her (originally, Maurice also thought Gaston was alright for her), and he also was shown to be very protective of Belle after his wife had died from the plague, with Belle's mom specifically sacrificing herself by telling them to leave her behind to allow Belle a healthy life.
In addition, the triplets (renamed to "Village Lasses") in the remake were depicted as having haughtiness, arrogance, being jealous of Belle, as well as overall being nasty people, including briefly smirking at Belle when she was locked up in the paddy wagon as well as being actively involved in the arrest of Maurice as well as the later attack on Beast's castle (in the original film, the triplets were not shown to have any negative behavior to them besides their crushing on Gaston [not participating in the later arrest of Maurice, let alone the attack on Beast's castle shortly afterward during the climax, and also implying at one point that they were willing to give their blessing to Gaston marrying Belle when Belle refused him in the beginning of the film, and while they were present during the final lyrics for the Gaston reprise where Gaston explicitly divulged key details for his blackmail plan, the way it was framed could easily be interpreted as the triplets genuinely not knowing about the plan due to their absence from Maurice's arrival up to the scene where Gaston whispers the plan to LeFou.], and it is also heavily implied that they supported traditional marriage and were demeaned in the film by being referred to in the script as The Bimbettes and treated as dumb blondes for this reason). In addition, according to the film's director Bill Condon as well as one of the triplets' actresses, Rafaelle Cohen, the reason the triplets were intensely jealous and spiteful of Belle was because their mother neglected them while doting on Belle, showcasing the dangers of parental neglect.

Cats (1998) : Movietalk # 04
Tumblr media
A microcosm of life and death hosted on the Petri dish of theatre. It makes sense there’s barely anything of a plot or a narrative to latch onto here because by all intended purposes you’re not supposed to – if anything it’s the organisms residing on this sample-drop of junkyard jamboree who invite us in to witness this very environment ourselves. Are cats just like us? They certainly aren’t dogs but get a hold of this one, look how they uphold eccentrics such as the gyrating Rum Tum Tugger and the steam-trudging Skimbleshanks, notables such as the worn-but-garbed-with-legacy Gus the Theatre Cat and the Old stuffy churchgoing Gumbie Cat (you cannot convince me that’s who she is otherwise), yet shun and hold distant the poor and weary Grizabella the Glamour Cat. Do you think it was intentional they made her look like Baby Jane Hudson? It’s gotta be; she used to dance and prowl just as well as the others but that child has grown, the dream has gone, and now the only remark she could ever warmly receive is the grin from an old, widening, crackling door – that light may turn false at the end but at least it is only material and not eternal – at least there ahead will be a new day to live before it comes our time to hit the Heaviside Layer.
It’s a weird ass show. It just about covers every major genre of music a single production could set under a roof and stage-lights (at least by late ‘70s/early ‘80s standards) and on nearly every single one of them everything seems to cater on the brink of an all-out orgy. But then again, isn’t that also us? Aren’t we also a world of thirsting, craving beasts wanting (needing) for a good fuck? One of David Cronenberg’s first major feature films was even all about that topic so you know at the very least this has some peer-reviewed credibility to it. And maybe that’s sorta the point of Cats: that bowl of cream before us is really a mirror held towards us… by us… for us (wait, is this fucking play about us?) Why not? Why else is it we have a God and a Devil to preside over these matters of life and death? Why else is there a concern about sensible names and particular names (how else can we become perpendicular?)? And why is it even in this most unsuspecting of living, breathing and ever-brawling beings do we uphold in unison a very own Superman in our image? Look who’s asking, then look again. We’re the Martians.
But then, that instance – the wave of re-acceptance of Grizabella by the warm touch of the kitten Victoria that becomes a touch from all who have heard that voice and felt that Jellicle soul emanating from within her still. It was tender yet so swift I couldn’t help but be taken aback by it. Sure it must’ve been the trick of condensation that all forms of art are prone to by necessity – and who would dare even argue the realities of something this seemingly far-out and fantastical? – but yet for just a moment I could only ponder whether or not we were the cats or if the cats were once again their own alien culture that they alone were privy to. And then Old Deuteronomy ad-dresses the crowd (to us) and it happens again: somewhere we now realize in the midst of this show we have felt as if we had transformed, or at the very least have presumed these behaviors of the cats to be our very own, finding the spots that clicked soundly within us and just going with it, quietly accepting this quieter, kinder visage of ourselves before we are then appropriately towards the very end broken from the spell, broken from this possibility that not only can we love us for ourselves but (in the case of the acceptance of Baby Jane Grizabella) that we can love us for each other. It’s not as resounding of a ring, I will admit, but it does have a tone. We are not cats, but maybe… someday… we can be. And we ought to be; otherwise, what else could we become but dogs of war fit for self-slaughter?

I stared down the thumbnails of "Beast Wars: Transformers" (1998) and was filled with the nostalgic urge to go play pre-2000s computer games or watch amateur animated YouTube "shows" that are now old enough to vote. It's... TV-quality 3D animation from the 90s that was clearly Trying Its Best, and may even end up kicking ass (compliment) to some degree, but now also inescapably looks Very, VERY Bad by modern standards.
I'm simultaneously nostalgically delighted by it, too cowardly to start watching it this week, and unreasonably amused by the fact that I've never heard of this series before. What a blast from the past.

authors note | fic: beasts | chapters one and two (AO3)
i'm going to be sharing little author's notes with each chapter of my new fic beasts, with short reflections on writing, headcanons, acknowledgements and recs for fics/metas and other media that i love and that helped me think through or shape the chapter in some way (writers are debtors!) very aware these author's notes are extremely indulgent (oops), but i find them helpful to think about projects’ shape and influences and moving parts, and also cannot get enough of reading other people's reflections on their writing, so hope you'll humour me with these (or just keep scrolling if not!)
in this author's note, i talk a bit about the scope of the project as a whole, the kind of story (and love story) this is, as well as talk a little about bringing these first two chapters (I: fledgling and II: gamebird) into being. there’s also a little sneak peek of chapter 3 featuring a certain DADA teacher 👀🌙✨
spoilers for chapters one and two below the cut!
Tumblr media
notes on beasts:
these are chapters one and two of a multichapter post-war story called beasts, which follows ginny’s seventh and final year back at hogwarts after the second wizarding war.
beasts is a coming-of-age story. it's a fic that has ginny looking back on her childhood and adolescence, coming to terms with the war and her place in it, thinking about the prospect of a rebuilt post-war wizarding world. it is also - of course - a love story.
most of all, though, beasts is about a young person’s relationship with the magical world. who is a beast, who is a being: these are questions that define degrees of inclusion in the life of the wizarding world. this is a story about the littlest weasley - child of magic, animal-lover - growing up among wild things, the savages and the monsters, and learning to find her place among them. it's about grieving and growing up in a world that distinguishes beings from beasts. it asks what it means to see those distinctions (and to doubt them).
this fic will contain multiple timelines: the present (ginny back at hogwarts in 1998-99), as well as memories and flashbacks to her childhood and school years (1981-1998, philosopher's stone thru deathly hallows). this is canon-compliant work, with some amount of speculation in imagining the characters in the immediate postwar moment. harry and ron are about to start training to be aurors in london: ginny and hermione have gone back to hogwarts for their seventh year.
the project as a whole is going to be full of wild things and war, but also softness and conversation and care, flashbacks and memories (and, soon, lots and lots of letters). we're going slow & steady, but i'm very excited to be sharing it at last, and really hope you enjoy it.
TW: depictions of torture and violence against minors | canon character death | discussion of PTSD | mention of sexual harassment
Tumblr media
notes on chapters one and two:
acknowledgements: a lil conversation with @btelling helped me better figure out why i want to use non-linear devices to tell this story, and her tips on non-linear storytelling and flagging were a big help, so huge cheers to her for that.
on chapter titles: fledgling, n. a young bird that has just fledged; fledged (of a young bird): having wing feathers that are large enough for flight; able to fly. gamebird, n. a bird shot for sport or food.
on the boating ceremony: chapter one opens at the close, with ginny and hermione's graduation ceremony. i know the boating ceremony, where the graduates sail back across the lake, is not technically canon, but rather comes from an old jkr post-series interview about hogwarts graduation ceremony practices. jkr seemed to think it was poetic. i reckon ginny weasley would think it was absolute bullshit. so, you know, had to nick it
on hannah and luna: hannah abbott, in this story, is now in ginny’s year, as she had to repeat a year after her mother’s death (she’d missed too much of her sixth year). luna is also very much a part of this story, but absent at the graduation ceremony for reasons that will be revealed in later chapters (if you saw a mention of her in an earlier draft of chapter 1... keep that to yourself)
on hermione: hermione is head girl for ~ reasons ~ that will be discussed in a later chapter. any guesses for head boy?
on fantastic beasts: i've used two excerpts from fantastic beasts here - the intro on magizoology, and the entry on the basilisk. the full book can be found online here.
on harry and ginny: this is a love story. but, as (i hope!) you can see from these chapters, this is also a story about ginny herself. what i wanted was to start this fic less with the question of 'how do harry and ginny get back together' than 'how do any of these characters put themselves back together'. it's a question that inevitably asks questions about relationships, but it also allows them be part of a bigger, broader thing, about finding a durable, stable happiness. so we start here, with harry and ginny, together, a summer behind them, but together in a tentative, fragile, new sort-of way. harry and ginny will have lots to figure out over the course of this story. ron and hermione are also together and will, of course, have their own place in all of this. this is canon/epilogue compliant, so we're working with all canon (and canonish hehe) relationships here babyyy
on ginny's first trip to hagrid's hut: i put a little excerpt of the canon scene from chamber of secrets at the top of chapter 2, where hagrid mentions ginny has been poking around hagrid’s hut. i know there's some dispute about whether ginny was already possessed by tom at this point, so trying to get at the roosters, or whether she was genuinely wandering around the grounds, maybe hoping to bump into harry. i tried to go for a half-way point here – i think she's discussed the chicken sheds with tom, but she’s not yet started attacking the roosters. so, for that scene at least, she is very much in control of her own faculties during her first proper conversation with hagrid.
on the troll: there are tiny references to my other fic orchards in chapter 2 (ron’s letter and the drawing of the troll) – if you want to read this piece, an earlier hbp harry/ginny summer fic, you can find it on ao3 here!
on gideon’s prewett’s watch: the mirror to harry’s coming-of-age present from the weasleys, this was ginny’s seventeenth birthday present. we’ll be seeing this watch again…
Tumblr media
reading list for chapters one and two:
on ginny's childhood and adolescence:
stumble on a secret power by pinkdementors (AO3) All stories have a beginning. This is one of them: the diary, the girl, the quill dipped in ink. Don’t trust a magical object if you can’t see where it keeps its brain, Arthur would admonish months later, but Ginny had grown up in a house crammed with unknown magic, had no memory of a life separate from talking mirrors and singing teapots and the tinny complaints of Great-Uncle Alfie’s chess set. She was just turned eleven years old, and she wanted a friend. Was this to be her crime?
lost by dirgewithoutmusic (AO3) Or were they something else entirely, this trio who was not golden? They were the unchosen three: the discarded Horcrux and the last Weasley; the brave, broken backup Boy Who Lived; the loony girl who lost her shoes and had more friends in thestrals than in her common room.
on ginny, tom and the diary:
the train station by dirgewithoutmusic (AO3) At eleven years old, Ginny Weasley almost died on the cold Chamber floor.
ginny weasley and the chamber of secrets by @its-nanse (AO3) Chamber of Secrets from Ginny's perspective, as a graphic novel.
slipped (and said something like your name) by @pebblysand (AO3) Through all of it, Harry stands at the back of the room. He stares straight ahead, quiet, hands shoved deep inside the pockets of the Gryffindor jumper that someone’s lent him. Very few of his things are truly his, these days. The morning after they got back, Ginny watched him from her bedroom window, up at four o’clock in the morning. He walked out of the house like he didn’t want to be in it and burnt all the clothes that Hermione had packed months ago in her tiny, beaded bag. ‘It all smells like damp,’ he said. Like blood, like fear and like the war. this meta by @stuckwith-harry on gender, tropes of victorian horror, and harry and ginny's contrasting relationship with riddle (tumblr) this re-read meta for chamber of secrets by @ashesandhackles (tumblr)
on charlie weasley:
Career Advice by edenfalling (AO3) Bill Weasley didn't pay much attention to goblins until his fifth year at Hogwarts.
unreachable by malapropism (AO3) "Eventually, Charlie found the words for what he’d always known, and learned that there were others with stories like his. It was easier, in a sense, once he had a word to explain something that seemed inexplicable to so many... But he’d never really gone searching for language, or for community, and he always just thought of himself as simply not interested. Not interested in relationships, or sex, or the kind of love that people fall into."
on time gaps & non-linear storytelling:
Maps to the Stars’ Homes by lizbee (AO3) Following the war, Harry buys a plane ticket and leaves, but the memories keep following him.
for the hope of it all by @missgryffin (AO3) James Potter’s given up on ever having a chance with Lily Evans. Lily Evans is trying not to be in love with James Potter, whom she’s fallen for too late. And Sirius Black’s not scheming at all when he enlists his friends’ help to spend a week fixing up a remote beach cottage that he bought with his inheritance money—and fails to mention the shortage of beds.
actually have been revisiting lots of films for this project to try and think about how to play with timelines (my taste is reallll basic ok), including:
little women (2019), dir. greta gerwig | moonlight (2016), dir. barry jenkins | dunkirk (2018), dir. christopher nolan | la vie en rose (2007), dir. olivier darhan | the social network (2010), dir. david fincher | 500 days of summer (2009), dir. marc webb | the irishman (2019), dir. martin scorcese
songs from the playlist particularly for this chapter:
smoke signals (reprise) – phoebe bridgers | an arc of doves (remastered 2004) – brian eno, harold budd | wallowa lake monster – sufjan stevens | a window to the past – john williams

...and a sneak peek of chapter 3 👀🐺🛖
Tumblr media
She’s getting cold feet with every step she and Lupin take towards the gamekeeper's hut. ‘He won’t bite, you know.’ ‘No, I know, but –’ ‘And, as I recall, what Hagrid’s baking lacks in quality, it more than makes up for in quantity.’ ‘No, you don’t understand –’ ‘What don’t I understand?’ ‘I’m the one,’ she whispers, a little frantic, ‘who got him sent to Azkaban!’ Lupin halts on the path. He turns to look at her sharply. ‘I’m afraid I don’t agree with you there,' he says. 'It seems to me the only person who got Hagrid sent to Azkaban is Lord Voldemort.’ Lupin frowns. ‘And perhaps Cornelius Fudge, who has an unfortunate tendency to cast aside anyone he deems lesser than him in the service of his own ambition.’ He’s a madman, she thinks. Professor Lupin looks like a gust of wind might finish him off — and yet here he is, slagging off the Minister for Magic, and throwing Tom’s darkest name around on a Tuesday morning, like it’s nothing.

I sourced the anime included in the bracket based on the well documented Wikipedia page for Toonami. However in order to keep the bracket manageable and even the playing field some decision were made:
Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Cardcaptors, Sailor Moon, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh [GX], and Naruto are excluded due to their overwhelming popularity, so to even the field Yuyu Hakusho will be the only series with its high level of international fame to participate. These series will be included in another bracket [TBA]. However I chose to keep Dragon Ball GT due to how polarizing it was among fans.
For the sake of simplicity series that are in some way chronologically connected will go under the same entry. For example: Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, Tenchin Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo are entered together Tenchi Muyo! in the bracket. Zoids: New Century and Zoids: Chaotic Century are entered together as Zoids. Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Enegron, and Transformers: Cybertron are entered together as Transformers Trilogy. Gundam is excluded from this ruling as just about every entry are stand alone stories or exist within separate canons.
Japanese-international co-productions will be in a bracket of its own [TBA]. However an exception will be made for Voltron, G-Force, and Robotech. While technically considered adaptions because of the reworked scripts and footage, they’re re-broadcasts of early attempts at anime distribution in the US, rather than an attempt at making something for an audience who are already familiar with/fans of anime. The Transformers trilogy is also exempt from this ruling despite being produced by Hasbro as I view them the same as a Bandai produced anime.
Hamtaro is not seeded but is in fact going up against G-Force: Guardians of Space. (I accidentally wiped the whole bracket 3 separate times while making it and i am not redoing it at this time, sorry)
