Chapter 31- Part 7

Alright, so my prediction that Team Meteor would target Pyrous Mountain was correct after all, I just jumped the gun a bit.

I think using an entire volcano to wipe out one (1) school is a bit overkill- but what do I know, I'm not a religious ecoterrorist.

(Future edit: So I was actually really curious about the odds of that happening, so after this battle I put in Klefki’s stats and Crater's stats into that damage calculator and discovered…well, Lava Plume one-shotting is actually only a 50/50. Earth Power, meanwhile, would have actually one-shotted, guaranteed. Why I didn't use Earth Power here to begin with…no idea.)

Shoot, Prong's worst enemy- someone immune to her Electric moves! And who resists her Bug moves! 

Riptide would be best here, but he's a bit unconscious right now. However, I don't think Prong will immediately die to Gligar, so it should be fine to keep her in for another minute.

She should be able to last long enough for me to Revive Riptide and heal him to almost full.

Tony sprang to his feet as he immediately rushed toward the suit that opened up for him. The skylight he’d had installed after invasion slid open and he blasted into the sky. “J, deploy the Iron Legion now!” As he did, he remembered Evan and he pulled up where the tsunami had hit and felt cold terror grip him as he saw that the Santa Monica pier had been taken out. “Shit! JARVIS, what’s my ETA?”

The HUD popped up a calculation. “At the speed you’re going, your estimated time of arrival should be three hours.”

That was unacceptable. He put more power into the thrusters as he could, and heard the BOOM as he broke the sound barrier somewhere over Lake Eerie. “At this speed ETA is two hours,” JARVIS intoned without having to be asked.

“What about the Iron Legion?” Tony was so relieved now that he hadn’t destroyed the rest of his suits after the Battle of Norco.

“ETA four minutes,” JARVIS told him. That was a much better time since when it came to natural disasters, especially involving large amounts of water, every minute, every second counted. Tony set his suit to auto-pilot for the remainder of the flight, making sure to call the FAA. He didn’t want any aircraft to accidentally stray into his path, and he’d be a disaster on top of a disaster.

“Give me eyes as soon as they reach the affected areas. Also, patch me into the channel the first responders use.” A few minutes later his HUD was filled with live feed from the suits, and he was rendered speechless at what he saw. Tony wished he could speed up past Mach 5 without the suit falling apart.

He decided to concentrate on what he could do (and not on a certain someone), and pulled up the stats on the suits that were functional. Out of the 35 suits he’d made between the invasion of Manhattan and the Mandarin Incident, there were nine viable suits. It was the Mark 20: Python, Mark 25: Striker/Thumper, Mark 28: Jack, Mark 33: Silver Centurion, Mark 34: Southpaw, Mark 36: Peacemaker, Mark 37: Hammerhead, Mark 38: Igor, and Mark 41: Bones.

Tony wished the Mark 35 would have survived, since the Red Snapper was made to save people during natural disasters; for example, rescuing victims trapped during an earthquake. He’d gotten the idea after the 7.1 earthquake that had hit LA, and now a year and a half later they’re hit with a tsunami. Unfortunately, Killian had destroyed it during the Battle of Norco.

Well, Southpaw would have to do, even if Red Snapper would have been better with its extendable and retractable claws. At least Hammerhead would come in handy, since it could remain submerged for long periods of time.

“This is Iron Man. I have multiple suits flying over the city and ready to help out. Just point me in the right direction and I’ll help where I can.” Almost immediately he was flooded with calls of trapped civilians, several inside and on top of their houses. He told JARVIS to concentrate on the ones trapped inside their houses, since there was another wave and the water was rising alarmingly fast. There were some people still trapped in their vehicles and unfortunately they couldn’t get to everyone on time.

He directed the suits where to go that they’d be the most useful. Tony heard dispatch call Swift Water Command, calling in a Code Three. Tony heard the commander say they were delayed and luckily J had a suit in the area. It was Bones and he saw the armor detach into several pieces and break through two roof vents to save a man trapped in the attic of his flooding house. As he watched the suits save people; Hammerhead dove for a little girl that had fallen into the water from off the roof of her house when she slipped, and Igor large enough that it could fly with several people hanging from it to take them to higher ground, he was even more glad he hadn’t destroyed the suits.

Sure he loved Pepper and would do anything for her, but with every life he saved, he remembered why he’d become Iron Man in the first place. He’d remembered those soldiers he’d laughed and joked with before they’d been gunned down, with his own weapons no less, and knew he’d made the right choice to not quit this. And maybe Pepper would come around and maybe she wouldn’t, but he refused to be guilted for doing something that saved people’s lives; even if at the times he was so sick and tired, and so inured he could barely move or breathe without something hurting.

It was more important to be able to help people, made him feel like he was alive for a reason. He’d told her three years ago, that he shouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for a reason, and this was that reason. It wasn’t fighting Killian and aliens, but helping and protecting the people from those threats.

It was almost two hours later, after remotely piloting the other suits, that he was physically flying over the city. The water still hadn’t receded, and three more waves had hit, and hopefully that would be the end of it but he doubted it. Tony wanted to call Evan and make sure he was alright, but cell phone service was wonky at the moment. Besides, he didn’t want to tie up the line when there were others that needed actual help. Evan’s apartment was out of the flood zone, so he was sure he was fine. He was weirdly glad he had a serious blood clot condition that had him confined to his home, and not out there with the rest of the first responders. Tony wouldn’t be able to concentrate if he knew Evan was in danger.

He decided not to unpack all of that right now and quickly dismissed the rest of the live feeds of the Iron Legion, letting JARVIS take over. Although now that he’d seen some of what was required for something of this magnitude, he knew he needed to remake Red Snapper and more Iron Legion, probably a special force that could be used for natural disasters. While Southpaw was for natural disasters as well, it was mostly to protect the user from damage from natural disasters. He needed more armors that had emergency features, like medical features such as the ability to be used as a defibrillator or even carry oxygen or breathing equipment for CPR.

Tony headed toward the pier, since flooding was still extensive, and he heard calls earlier of first responders being needed at the Santa Monica Pier. As he neared where the worst of the flooding was, he saw that the whole pier was underwater. There saw also an actual Ferris wheel that was still standing after all three waves, but it wouldn’t hold for much longer.

As he neared, he saw that the wave was starting to recede, going in the other direction. He heard the ones at the Ferris wheel call the coast guard. ‘Coast Guard, Coast Guard. This is Captain Nash LAFD. We need a miracle at the pier. We need one quick.’ As the helicopter flew in, the Ferris wheel started to tip, and he blasted forward.

“Incoming, Captain Nash!” he called over the speaker on his suit, arriving in time to catch the Ferris wheel as it almost toppled. Tony saw that most of the people had been evacuated except for the one who was being airlifted and a woman with curly hair, as well as two first responders, both firefighters by the looks of it.

“Iron Man!” he heard someone call in surprise.

“Yes, I’ll sign autographs later,” he joked, “but right now this thing is coming down and I might not be able to hold it for long.” The two firefighters, one Hispanic man and another Caucasian woman had just finished lowering the woman and now looked at each other, unclipped from their lines and jumped, landing feet first in the water. “Ten out of ten!” Tony called, “now let’s go go go!” They scrambled onto the speed boats as Tony grunted as the debris hit it hard and it started to put a strain on the armor. When he saw they were clear, he let it drop as he flew out of the way barely in time from getting knocked down by it.

He met them at the entrance of the pier by the sign that read ‘•Yacht Harbor• SPORT FISHING •BOATING Cafes’, the water still high enough that it reach most of their calves. If he’d been in any armor before the Mark 8, he’d have thought twice before landing in the water. However the Mark 43 was a better version of all the armors that had come before. He wanted to see if anyone needed help.

“Iron Man,” he heard someone call. Tony turned to see a stern looking man in his early fifties with a helmet on his head and the red vest that declared him a fire captain. This must be Captain Nash. He was wet and obviously tired, but there was still a certain amount of authority to the set of his shoulders. He had the kind of presence Howard had given off, but tempered with something softer Tony couldn’t identify.

“That’s me,” he said as he lifted up the face plate but refrained from stepping out of the suit. He didn’t want to get his shoes wet, and besides, this man appeared to be at good six feet and even if it was only two or three inches, he hated feeling short. Especially when it was from a man that reminded him if even just a tiny bit of Howard. “But just Tony, please. What can I do for you, Captain?”

Nash extended his hand, and Tony took it without hesitation. He had more respect for first responders than any bureaucratic asshole that wanted to shake his hand and play nice for the cameras. “Bobby Nash of the 118. Thank you for the assist,” giving his gauntlet covered hand a firm shake. Tony liked the sincerity in his voice.

“It was no problem, Cap. I didn’t really do much,” he assured. The man’s lips quirked a bit, whether in annoyance or amusement, it was hard to tell. Bobby Nash had one of those faces that gave almost nothing away. “Do you need anymore assistance?”

The woman opened her mouth but Bobby held a hand to stop her. The woman’s nametag, which was surprisingly still on, read Bosko, and the man had Diaz on his. Tony wondered why that sounded familiar. “We have a missing member of Firehouse 136, Captain Ronnie Cooper. There’s also a lot of people trapped and missing. I had thought I heard that Iron Man was helping out, and it’s nice to see it’s true.”

“Sure am, wherever it’s needed.” He’d already been able to help a lot of people and hoped to continue as long as his body and the power supply on his armors allowed. “I’ll keep an eye out for Captain Cooper, and if you need help with anything, give me a holler. There are several other suits flying over the city. So, even if I’m not nearby, my co-pilot JARVIS will be able to assist you if I can’t.”

He gave the man a salute that wasn’t meant to be at all mocking, and then the faceplate snapped shut before he blasted into the air. Tony wanted to make sure there weren’t any locations that had been damaged that could potentially become deadly. The last thing he needed was for the water to catch on fire if there was any gas spillage, and he expected it’d be a terrifying sight.

“J, try Evan’s phone,” he said. “Also, bring up satellite images of Hawaii. I don’t want to be blindsided in case they were hit as well.”

“Bringing up images right now, sir. Also, I’m getting no response from Mr. Buckley’s phone.” This made Tony worry, since Evan always answered his phone (even when he called him an old man for calling and not texting). He couldn’t do anything though, since he was needed right where he was. Tony couldn’t just rush to Evan’s apartment, there was no flooding in the area, and there were people in need of help. So, he reluctantly continued on.

“You better be safe, Evan,” he muttered.-

im new to DMing, and while i seem to have gotten the hang of most things well, im super confused when it comes to running battles (especially when theyre my own monsters) how do i balance a battle? how do i tell how many enemies/how much health per enemy = fair for certain amounts of players? is there a chart or resource somewhere you know of, or is it all intuition? (bonus question: how long should normal and boss encounters last irl time wise?) thanks so much!

thanks for sending me this question! this answer is particularly huge… you have been warned. 

as usual, here’s the tl;dr:

- for an easy to moderate challenge, have the same (or fewer) number of enemies as there are players;

- for an advanced challenge, outnumber the players;

- lower your enemies’ AC to something that your players can hit 60-70% of the time;

- in exchange, buff your enemies’ HP;

- feel free to fudge hit points whenever you want;

- utilize the “minions” mechanic from 4th edition;

- for boss battles, introduce special bonus actions, reactions, and villain actions;

- combat usually lasts 3-4 rounds: plan accordingly;

- ask yourself: why is this combat happening? what narrative/dramatic and character stakes can i introduce?;

- and have fun!

i want to preface my answer by saying that i don’t enjoy easy combat – unless played for laughs/comedy, or used to foreshadow something plotwise (like a goblin scout’s death alerting the goblin horde at large), i hardly ever throw an easy combat encounter at my party.

so, the following advice is given with challenging the players in mind – either moderately, immensely, or impossibly. i guess i’m just a big sucker for jim murphy/matt colville-style DO OR DIE challenges. otherwise, what’s the point?

another preface: this answer is given in the spirit of avoiding the “slog” – the combat encounter where it feels like baddies and PCs are just stepping up to the plate, whacking at each other, and stepping back down. that’s boring. and boring combat is the worst. sometimes it’s unavoidable – we all have our off days, nothing wrong about that – but the less that it happens, the more fun that everyone has! right?

now, on to the answer itself!

first of all, i’ve already written an answer to an ask a little while back about combat that might be useful to you. click here to read about how to make more action-oriented monsters, especially for boss battles and random encounters that you want to feel significant and deadly.

second of all, here’s the 5e CR encounter calculator i used to use all the time. it’s extremely intuitive and has toggles for number of players, level of players, monster CR/EXP, and how difficult encounters would be rated (easy, medium, hard, deadly). 

third of all, i never use that calculator anymore.

over the course of the 2.5 years i’ve spent DMing 5th edition, there are three main things i’ve learned that can drastically increase, or decrease, the difficulty of a combat encounter. they are: # of baddies, armor class, and # of hit points.

regarding # of baddies. due to how the action economy in 5e plays out, the more creatures there are on either side of a combat, the bigger the advantage that side has. it’s just kind of how it works. so, an easy way to bump up the difficulty: throw more monsters at the players than there are players.

the one soft exception is boss battles. personally, i fucking LOVE having just ONE, super badass, super hard to kill, hardcore boss that the party gets to face down during crucial turning points in the campaign. it makes me feel like i’m running fucking Dracula in Netflix’s Castlevania against some lovable and deadly dumbasses. it’s great. it’s fun. it’s thrilling. to make bosses as challenging (and therefore rewarding) as possible, i highly recommend reading the ask i linked earlier in this reply. (click here for the link again.)

now, i say it’s a soft exception because i like giving my bosses minions. i basically utilize the 4th edition (i think?) “minion” mechanic where the AC, bonus to hit, and damage of all minion creatures are the same as regular versions of the creature. the only difference is, they have 1 HP. 

this can give the PCs the awesome feeling of wading through waves and waves of minions – say, dozens of zombies, as an evil lich cackles upon their raised stone dais 80 feet away. i don’t utilize this too often because then it can feel tiring to the party. but done sparingly, and with narrative stakes, it can be quite thrilling! (that maxim is also true for basically any kind of combat encounter in D&D.)

regarding armor class. obviously, the higher the armor class, the harder the challenge. if you can’t hit the damn thing obviously you can’t kill it. i personally like to pitch the AC of my enemies a liiittle bit lower, to increase my PCs’ probability of hitting. the exact number of the armor class will depend on your players’ level.

as a super general guide for players at level 3, 10-13 is easy, 14-15 is moderate, 16-17 is challenging (heavily favoring 17), and 18+ is very challenging/almost impossible. 

just so you know, i generally set my enemies’ ACs for a level 3 party to be 13 for less important creatures, and 14 for more important creatures. i’d probably set the AC to be 15 or 16 for a mini-boss, and 16 or 17 (if i’m feeling cruel lol) for a boss.

obviously, this scales as your party levels up, finds magical items, and gains special features and boons. i would scale the difficulty by 1 when they hit level 4 and get an ability score improvement, and then by 1 every 2 levels or so.

in other words, at level 4, i’d consider an AC of 11-14 to be easy, 15-16 as moderate, 17-18 as challenging (heavily favoring 18), and 19+ as very challenging/almost impossible. and by the time your party is levels 12-16, AC can often feel like it doesn’t freaking matter anymore because they’ll be able to hit, like, fucking everything. anyway.

there’s some nitty gritty mathematics about this if you like to get granular. this is a good video about dice math, armor class, and calculating advantage mathematically if that sort of thing interests you.

regarding # of hit points. honestly, i fudge this most times. because i like to scale my AC on the lower end, in exchange, i make my creatures fucking FAT. like, i’ll look at their stat block in the monster manual, and add 30-50% to what they already have. sometimes i’ll straight up double or even triple it.

for example, the spectator normally has 39 hit points, but i gave my spectator ~100, because it was a miniboss. i did, however, keep its armor class at 14 because that meant my players, at 3rd level, would be able to hit it 60-70% of the time. this strategy of mine tends to work out, because my players are usually able to dish out a LOT of damage per round. (we have a barb, a fighter, and a warlock in the party lol.)

something i did in the spectator fight, that i wish i didn’t do, was stay faithful to the number of hit points it had. the barbarian ended up killing it with a rather anticlimactic attack. i know for certain that my warlock, which was next in the initiative order, had this SUPER cool and character-relevant attack planned. what i would do differently, is keep the spectator alive just long enough for my warlock to do their cool fucking move, and have that move kill the monster.

and now for the big takeaway. combat, for me, is all about giving my players a chance to shine, be badass, utilize their class abilities, and be creative. just like any other aspect of d&d, such as roleplaying and exploration, combat is an exercise in collaborative storytelling (for me, at least).

i rarely introduce combat that doesn’t tie into an A plot, a B plot, or a side quest that the PCs are chasing. i don’t have anything against random encounters – in fact, i ran some RE’s in the second-most recent session – but what makes combat fun for me as a DM is the fact that it advances story, and potentially deepens the players’ understanding of their character.

so, before you throw your players into a combat situation, ask yourself: why? how can i make this narratively dramatic – and not just a slogfest?

bonus answer: most combat encounters will struggle to last beyond three, maybe four, rounds. especially if there are an equal or fewer baddies to the player characters. however, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. in fact, if combat went on for five, six, seven rounds, it can begin to feel like… well.. a slog.

so make the most out of your three, four rounds, and make each combat encounter unique! how about an environmental challenge? slippery ground, swinging axes, pools of lava, a sudden earthquake, a portcullis dividing the party, water filling the room.

or roleplay/plot-related challenges? maybe there’s a circle of mages attempting to summon a demon that are protected by enchanted suits of armor that the PCs need to hack through. maybe there are hostages. maybe there’s a powerful magical artifact that the baddies and PCs both want, and the challenge in the combat lies in who can most deftly and efficiently maneuver through the clockwork maze protecting the raised dais the item resides upon.

Octopath Traveler Combat Review

Hello whoever’s reading this, I’m here to talk about Octopath Traveler’s combat system, and how it sucks. Now you might be wondering, why am I writing about this now, isn’t that game kind of old at this point? Yes, it is, but I only “finished” playing recently since I was working off of a borrowed copy and it’s more the level of disappointment I felt while playing it has stuck with me much more than many other games I’ve played. Since I want to go into game design and development, I thought that it would be good practice to do a deep dive on game mechanics, and it’s easier to write about something that I have strong feelings about to start with. While I have many issues with Octopath, the combat system is what the player is dealing with the most (which in itself is an issue), so the fact that it was lackluster dropped the enjoyability of the game more than if it were better balanced with story and exploration. I’ll try to hit everything that I had a gripe with, from minor things I personally would want changed, to what I view as major flaws that lower the enjoyment for everyone. I will be talking about the post-game boss, because a lot of my issues come into focus during it, so spoiler warning.

For reference, I’ll be talking about the game the way I played it, so I’ll give my main character loadouts in relation to the final boss. Team 1: Hunter Therion, Cleric Alfyn, Sorceror Cyrus, and Thief Olberic; Team 2: Warlord H’annit, Scholar Ophelia, Apothecary Primrose, and Runelord Tressa.

Now the big overarching problem with this game is its simplicity. Making a game simple can be a good thing, and definitely makes it more accessible, but there are a plethora of sub issues that I will be going into throughout this caused by how oversimplified many systems are in this game. For starters there is the lack of skill diversity, as in, there just isn’t very much that characters and enemies do over the course of the game. The offensive skills have 12 possible damage types, 6 weapons (Phys) and 6 elemental (Elem) and there’s only really 4 different ways these are implemented: single hit, multi hit, wide (hits all enemies) hit, and wide multi hit. Multi hits are generally just better due to the break system and damage limits, and wide hits are better the more enemies there are. Those of you good with numbers might have already multiplied those to get 48 ways of hitting an enemy, and I’ll add two, since the Merchant has an single hit untyped skill and the Starseer has a wide untyped skill, for a grand total of 50 that I can remember. Looking at that number I actually don’t know if that looks like a lot for somebody who hasn’t played the game, but the damage types only really matter in the break mechanic of the game and which stat is used for calculating damage. No particular type of damage is better for damage or accuracy skill wise, and the elem skills will do the exact same thing no matter which element is used since they’re only based on the user’s Mag stat. Phys attacks are a bit different since each one is affected by the weapon the user has equipped for that type, but they’re generally all +Str and then +Mag / +Acc / +Crit / +Spd / +Eva. Some Phys skills also have side effects that help differentiate between them, but the basic attacks are the same when the weapons are similar.

Since I brought it up, let’s talk about the two main mechanics of combat that this game has, the break and boost systems. Overall, these systems are pretty good on their own, and most of my issues are rather small here. First up is the break system: hit the opponent with their weaknesses a number of times, and they lose any remaining moves they have this turn, any they would take on the next turn, and all attacks against them deal more damage, though on the turn after the next, they are guaranteed to move first. This is where most of the fun of the game is, figuring out the enemy’s weaknesses, as they are hidden when you first encounter an enemy, only revealed when the weakness is hit, or with the Analyze skill, and then timing the breaks to be the most beneficial to your team. Many enemies belonged to groups with similar weaknesses, so it’s interesting to learn like winged creatures are generally weak to wind and / or spear attacks. The main problem I have with the break system is that once an enemy is broken, all damage types have the same effectiveness. Before being broken, an enemy that is weak to fire will take extra damage than if it’s hit with an ice attack, but while broken these attacks will do the same damage. Any accuracy bonuses don’t matter, since you can’t miss an attack on a broken enemy and speed bonuses only really matter if the order in which skills are cast is important, which there are some cases, usually with buffing allies. Then a bit smaller is how the weakness bar is always ordered, so some damage types are more useful to figure out all of the weaknesses. For example, if a weakness to staves is the leftmost weakness to be found, the player knows that there are no other physical weaknesses and to just start trying elemental ones. There were also some interesting extra mechanics that were only used a few times, such as shuffling weaknesses after a break, or, one mechanic used exactly once in phase 1 of the final boss, rotating through weaknesses when being attacked.

Then we get to the boost system, which complements the break system very well, with only minor annoyances. It makes the player decide between spending power against an unbroken opponent to break them faster, save up to deal massive damage to an opponent once they break, or how frequently turns need to be spent to cast buffs or debuffs. One issue that I have here is that magic users get the short end of the stick again, as basic attacks are the only moves (besides Bewildering Dance, the RNG move) that boosting will cause more instances of the move to occur. Boosting three times on somebody that will basic attack an enemy can cause them to lose 4 shields, while doing the same on a fire skill will just cause it to do more damage, which is objectively better to do when the enemy is broken. This usually isn’t an issue, as the BP can be spent on status effects and healing which will always be helpful, so besides Cyrus (laugh at him, he’s a nerd) there’s always something to spend BP on, thought your personal playstyle might dictate otherwise. Something that’s more personally annoying is how the limit is 5 BP max per character, since the most you can use is 3 per turn. What would be really nice and satisfying would be to break an opponent, have everybody spend 3 BP for full boosted whatever on the break turn, and then have everybody spend another 3 BP on fully boosted whatever else on the second break turn.

Next is another facet of the simple problem, is that there is significantly less character variability than the game wants you to think, and that’s not much in the first place. There are only 96 total skills for player characters, as there are 12 jobs with 8 skills each, and each character has their default job and may also equip a secondary job, letting each character go into battle with 16 skills, ignoring the path actions that grant others conditionally. The 8 base jobs can be simplified into 2 categories, DPS and Utility, 3 if you want to split the utilities into physical and elemental which I see as reasonable, or if you want to stretch it and split the 2 DPSs in the same way. I’ll stick with 3 since I can show how to best simplify them this way, watch. DPS: multiple damage type skills; Phys Utility: one weapon type set of skills, one single target elem skill, and a couple (de)buffs; Elem Utility: a single target elem skill, a wide elem skill, and a bunch of buffs. The advanced classes are even simpler, three of them being every attack type in either weapons or elements and then the remaining one being a bunch of buffs with one multi element skill so that every element had 5 related skills. I’m debating going into each individual job, but there are two that I will be getting into later for sure, Thief and Starseer, for opposite reasons.

Related to the lack of damage types and skills, is a lack of feeling of progression throughout the game. You gain access to 66% of the skills you will ever have by the end of the first quarter of the game, and the last 33% you won’t get until about the last quarter of the game. While the beginning of the a game it makes sense to give the players a bunch of tools rapidly, especially given the whole theme of versatility of the 8 different starting characters the game is based around, skills just scale up with the player’s stats, given through levels and equipment, otherwise they stay the same. While the middle half of the game can be used to mix and match secondary jobs on characters, it’s all just variations on the familiar. While this lack of progression just makes the game a bit boring until you start finding the advanced jobs, the actual issue is how SP scales through the game. The game ends up getting significantly easier as you progress further into the game since the SP costs become a smaller percentage of each character’s SP pools, and most forms of SP regeneration are percentage based, so characters get back SP easier too. For example, I had Ophelia with Second Wind (which I will get to in detail later) and a bunch of SP equipment, which by mid-game meant she could cast most spells and heal back more SP than they cost, and late-game everything was free outside of revive, which took two turns to fully heal. This is contrast to the beginning of the game, where a single skill cast could deplete a character’s entire SP pool, especially the physical jobs, as they usually came with smaller SP pools in the first place.

But where the runaway scaling is the worst, is actually on the thief job. Thief is a physical utility class, so it comes with dagger skills, the mandatory single hit fire skill, phys str and def debuffs, and some slightly more interesting abilities that falloff as the game goes on and you don’t need items or SP as much. All three dagger skills have special qualities, the divine skill uses the characters spd in the damage calculation, but HP Thief and Steal SP are the really broken ones. They both function the same way, hit twice with the dagger, then recover some percentage of the damage dealt to the stat in the name, 50% to HP or 5% to SP. The cost is also the same for each, 6 SP. There seemed to be a bit of a decrease in accuracy for each compared to just basic attacking with a dagger, so early on it was a bit of a risk to use it on enemies, especially if they were unbroken and not weak to daggers, as you would be losing SP to gain 30 health, or getting two dagger hits without boosting. But then, once the total damage of both hits reached 120, or even if you wanted to be safer, the damage of either hit, you start having a move that is free to use and hits more times than a basic attack without using BP, while also being able to heal yourself in a pinch. Now, the max damage you can deal in one hit without the Surpassing Power is 9,999, and you can very clearly see that a thief becomes an invincible slaughterer, as one can either heal themself for 9,999 HP, which is the max, or 999 SP, which is also the max, per turn. Now this might take a bit of set up, such as decreasing the enemy’s physical defense, which I remember mentioning is an ability that the thief job has, or increasing the thief’s physical strength, and there are a few ways to do that, but what I’m saying is it’s pretty much just all lined up for you to do way too easily with next to no drawbacks.

I’ve mentioned two support skills by now, so I should probably talk about them and the issues that they have. There’s 4 for every job, so 48 total, and each character has 4 slots that they can have support skills assigned to with no job related restrictions. This theoretically is about 200000 combinations, but since many support skills don’t synergize well with either the other ones or with the character or just are worse than others, there’s actually a lot less. The first way the options are culled are through support skills that are basically required. First on that list of required ones is that everybody needs Saving Grace, full stop. It changes the equipped character’s max HP from what is listed to 9,999, though if their HP is above their listed max, they can’t be healed any further until they have returned to a normal HP level. This gets very important for many late game bosses, and I feel like every paragraph is opening another two or more topics to go to, as most character’s 2k~3k isn’t enough. After that is some form of SP assistance, as the support skills are the ones with all the fancy %SP recovery. There’s 4 options to choose from: % max heal, heal % basic attack damage done, halve all SP costs, and heal % damage taken. Your magic casters will generally get the % max heal, since they have large mana pools to take advantage of that, and your DPSs will have the basic damage one, with much smaller mana pools and higher physical attack damage. Anyone with the Thief class can skip this, since as I’ve said, they will never run out of mana anyways. The % damage taken isn’t particularly useful as it’s such a small percentage and much less reliable than the others given it’s based on the enemy’s actions and targeting rather than yours. The Halve SP costs skill is situational, as some classes have higher SP costs, but losing the ability to actually regenerate SP makes the longer (and usually harder) fights more dangerous as you still run the risk of running out of mana. I used it on Tressa, since I played her as a caster and her mana pool is a bit lower than the other main casters, plus her Rest ability allows her to regain SP on her own. Third is either of the stat buff skills, once again the choice is based on how the character will be dealing damage. There’s Physical Prowess for Phys attack and defense or Elemental Edge for Elem attack and defense, and instead of being a stat boost like other similar skills from base jobs is that they permanently grant the combat buff to those stats, which means you don’t need to spend time casting the skills that do that AND that they can’t be dispelled by the enemy. What you do with the last slot (or two for thieves) is more open and is going to be where you can have ideas about different builds.

For me though, that last slot went to Surpassing Power on most characters, because by late game, most of my characters were hitting the damage limit pretty easily. Now the damage limit is just the fact that no single attack can deal more than 9,999 damage, because the developers said so. The support skill Surpassing Power, similar to Saving Grace, ignores that, and instead makes the max 99,999, though have fun trying to reach that before your character’s stats max out. Octopath unfortunately has a lot of these kind of arbitrary limits which only seem to exist to highlight an ability that can get around it, like purple treasure chests and Therion’s job ability. By the time I got to the post game boss 5 of my characters were consistently hitting the damage limit, and due to the sometimes absurd amounts of health that opponents had, Surpassing Power just made most of those fights so much faster.

Now a bit of time talking about enemies, because the difficulty scaling of the game is pretty boring, once again due to how simple the game is. This is really an issue among a lot of this type of RPG, since the game is just a numbers game and bigger numbers = harder fights. There’s two points specifically that make Octopath particularly bad with this, the lack of weaknesses on player characters, and enemy health. Since the player characters don’t have any weaknesses like enemies do, you really don’t have to pay attention to what specifically the opponent is doing, at most you can pay attention to whether you are taking physical or elemental damage, but the types are completely irrelevant. There’s a slight exception since there are accessories that reduce specific types of elemental damage, but as far as I could tell it was just better to use accessories that gave stat bonuses. Some enemies had abilities that could inflict status ailments, or had secondary abilities similar to player skills, but they were so few and far between that once again it doesn’t really contribute much. The other issue is with enemy’s health, in that they generally have way too much and causes the game to become so much slower. Fighting basic enemies is almost never a danger to your team assuming you are properly equipped, but the fights can still drag on for 5~10 minutes just whittling down their health. This even applies to fighting enemies that are much lower level than your own team, mostly due to the defensive bonuses that an enemy that hasn’t been broken has. This culminates to a final boss with about 700,000 HP, ignoring all the summons that it has and that it can’t take damage while the summons exist. Again remember that the maximum damage per hit is 9,999 in most cases and 99,999 in the other (which I’ve never gotten close to even with max offensive stats). Then also add in that you probably won’t be anywhere near that first max damage unless the boss is broken too, and you can see why the fights just take so long.

Ok, time to talk about the other job that particularly stood out to me, the Starseer. It’s a healing support job mostly focused around manipulating the party’s BP. Or at least the good skills it has are focused around BP. The divine skill is a wide untyped elemental attack dealing damage based around the whole team’s BP stock, and one of its utility skills also increases damage when the user uses BP, which you have to for divine skills. Another skill it has increases the BP gain of an ally to two per turn, rather than one. Unfortunately we’re already starting to get into the ok skill territory, as due to the way BP is gained, it is only useful for about half of the duration. After a character uses BP, they don’t gain any for the next turn, and since the max is 5 BP, there can only ever be two turns in a row where you benefit from this, and depending on support skills, the maximum benefit a character can get from this ability is an additional 4 – 6 BP. Now there is a Merchant skill that can give another character 4 BP instantly for the exact same cost. The rest of the skills range from decent but situational to worse versions of other job skills, and remember, Starseer is a secret job, meaning you don’t start with access to it, all the abilities are relatively expensive, and you have to fight a boss to unlock it. Continuing to a decent but situational skill is one that can target either enemies or allies, and prevents all stat buffs from being able to be applied to an enemy or prevents all stat debuffs from being able to be applied to an ally. If you know the enemy is a type to be able to apply either, this can be helpful if you can time it properly. The other skills of the job are mostly more expensive and / or worse versions of skills that other jobs have. From dealing multiple types of damage (worse than just 1 in 95% of cases) to healing over time (enemy’s damage considerably outpaces the healing it provides) to a counter that doesn’t prevent the damage like its counterpart, pretty much every active skill they have is disappointing.

I ran out of steam on that last paragraph, and stopped writing this for about 3 months, so I’ll just get one last point in. There are actually a lot of mechanics in the game that are kind of complicated, but since this game is about oversimplification, much of the most important nuance that the game actually has is hidden from the player. There are a ton of little bits of information that would make decision making in the game so much easier, but because the game refuses to display them, there’s a lot of guesswork. In some cases, this hidden information is obfuscating mechanics that subvert player expectations, so what they thought was an easy decision should actually be harder. The following is a non-comprehensive list of some of the worst offenders of hiding information in my opinion. The stat nuts, which raise character stats permanently, give different amounts of their stat depending on which character eats it. Moves that hit a random amount of times ignore all bonuses and penalties to accuracy and evasion. Items that reduce damage or recover HP/SP don’t say by how much, or whether it is percentage or a flat number. Healing skills scale with the caster’s elemental defense. What makes these and similar mechanics the most annoying is that there are some skills that do list exact numbers or percentages for their effects, so it is inconsistent too.

I will end this now and hopefully I covered everything I meant to. A lot of this was thought up while mowing the lawn or laying in bed trying to get to sleep so if something was lost in the recesses of my mind that’s unfortunate. Persona 3 FES: Part 1 (Game Review)

Backstory: The major reason I chose Persona 3 FES was due to a friend of mine, Allan, pushing off Persona 5 multiple times. I made a deal with him, I would go through Persona 3 FES on hard, as its his favorite of the series, if he beats Persona 5, and so he agreed. Because I am already playing through it, I decided I might as well review it in parts about my experience.

This part will establish important details to understanding the game, before I discuss plot. The Pictures used for the review(all parts) come from the Shin Megami Tensei Wikia Site, http://megamitensei.wikia.com , this is due to simplicity.

Gameplay: If you never played a persona game, then this section will help explain everything that is major to the game. The game is a Turn-Based JRPG, with elements similar to Pokemon, with enemies and allies being weak to specific attack types and the collect them all style for the personas, but that is where the similarities end. The player character has the ability to wield multiple personas at once, and switch through them, while the rest of the party members lack this ability. The best feature in battle is the once mores and all out attacks. By hitting an enemy with an attack they are weak to or by landing a critical hit,they get knocked down and you or your party member gets to attack again.

However, this also happens when you or a party member gets hit with an attack they are weak to. Once more’s DO NOT happen when using a multi targeting attack. Missing a target also downs the attacker. All out attacks happen when the entire enemy team is downed and it deals massive damage to all downed targets, but it requires at least one party member to be up and have no status affects

Without either of these core features, Persona 3 FES would be near unplayable, so its best that you work to use them and try to hit an enemies weak point. I do feel spoiled by the other games, as the all out attack and once more system gets improved a ton in the future installments, simply due to how the party changes work. In Persona 3 FES, you do not have direct control over party members, and to some, this is a deal breaker. I would not recommend hard for the first time player, even if you beaten other Persona games, but as stipulation for the deal with my friend, I am. I found that because of the lack of complete control of party members, you must rely on your own character and the ability to have multiple personas. Your party isn’t dumb, they are rather smart and due attacks that make sense, but you must control them by using the Tactics commands that are part of the command menu. It sucks that they done stay the same, but at the same time, its useful for boss fights or other tough fights to tell the party exactly what you want them to do, but its still no supplement for self control, and to the games credit, its the first of the series to be in this fashion so I can give it some slack.  Personas and enemies have an Arcana, based upon the major arcanas of the tarot deck. This matters because of Social Links. Social Links are the way the main character levels up his personas. Social Links are bonds of friendship between characters of the main over world who represent each of the Arcana, some are given to you by game progress, like Fool, while the majority are gained by spending time with people, like Magician. This is another aspect that may turn off players, as they are “forced” to spend time with other characters. I like this idea, and looking at the game for when it was released, it was a risk move, but it payed off, as the sequels use this mechanic to flesh out their characters, FES being no exception. Some Social Links or S-Links as I will be referring to them in the coming parts, can be quite dull, but I can once again give it slack as its the first game to do S-Links. S-Links is also how your character can date, but some require certain conditions to be met, like your personal stats need to meet specific levels. Personas can also Fuse, which is how you make personas typically, as it adds your S-Link level bonus to the fusion. By fusing personas, you can give the new persona attacks or abilities the old ones had by having it inherit them. I am not going to explain how the likely hood can be manipulated, as it would make the review go even longer, but its semi-complicated. To get what you want however, back out and select the personas again til you get what you want. The arcana also helps determine what role the persona will fill once fused, and there are plenty of online calculators for finding what persona fuse into what. The last two mechanics are Player Stats and Fatigue. The three player stats that you will be trying to increase is Courage, Charm, and Academics. The player stats matter, as they determine your school grades, yes being a high school means you have tests, social links and even specific lines of dialogue. Balancing Social Links, Dungeon Diving and Player Stats is the players bane, but enjoyable once you find your nice balance. But the thing that likes to mess with the balance is, FATIGUE. This is one thing that I feel ruins this game. You want to dungeon dive, well too bad your party is too tired or sick. Want to study like a normal student, too bad you studied your worst subject and wake up sick the next day, it really frustrates me. Well it did, until I discovered the bathroom. No joke, your best friend is the bathroom, it can cure fatigue, but only at a chance and the first time that day,so if  your are using an emulator, save state before it, and boom you’re good. At least the one thing fatigue can give you is a courage up for free, from the school “nurse.” Now that I covered all the major mechanics, next part will be part of the actual story. And I will give you a death counter at each part, because, I did die, alot.

EDIT: I just found out you can set tactics to save in config from the system menu in the pause menu. Huh, the more you know.

The Infected (Survival Horror Manual)

The Infected –

It is a dark lonesome night. I am huddled away in my shelter, my hands pressed against my mouth, and my eyes shut tight. I hear the moan, the shuffle of feet, and smell the stench of rot in the air. The moan is low and guttural, its deep and feels heavy as if the maker of the noise cannot do much more than allow an escape of air from its otherwise unresponsive body. A body that seems to be more of a suit than flesh itself. It hangs in places like rags, it sags like a wet sack filled with dirty water, and the smell. Oh God the smell. They are dead, I know they are, but God I can see them move about as if in a daze… and alive. They are searching for me; it is only a matter of time. God help me. God help us all…” – Wilmer Drisk

The Infected enemy is by all accounts, that which has been “infected”. Be it whether a virus made in a lab by man or a curse brought down upon the earth by Gods. It could also be corpses that have been reanimated through dark and/or sinister magic. Because of its lack of intelligence, a zombie of any kind will be very rudimentary and straightforward. The Infected is also any creature type that can either spread its disease or virus or can “infect” other targets through some means. They can follow simple tasks, they can do very simple actions, but unless controlled by any other force; zombies follow three basic rules:

1. They need to feed. 2. They never sleep. 3. They push forward, regardless of what is in their way.

Any creature can become a zombie type, provided they follow the worlds rules as to how to become a zombie. Some rules state that zombies can only be created by the dead scratching or biting a living creature. That is the most common but not always the main reason. It is up to the DM to decide how the virus or curse is transferred, IF it is at all. There are worlds where zombies serve a master and have only been made by them for them and thus no amount of biting or scratching will change another into one of the undead. Other worlds show that regardless of how the living target dies, they will reanimate as the undead. There are more versions of the Infected than just the ‘zombie’ trope so we will refer to them as the ‘Infected’ for the purposes of this category.

Hit Dice: When calculating the health of an Infected, double the HP of the target. The Infected should always have more HP than the players or NPC’s, or even any other living creature. They are harder to put down and take more damage and that should be represented in how much HP they have. If a standard NPC has 10 HP, when they reanimate, they should have 20. If they have taken damage before they turned then they will come back at full health. All damage prior to Infection is in void (unless of extenuating circumstances such as explosive damage or a separation of limbs).

Speed: All speed for Infected must reduce to its lowest rating. A standard NPC can move up to 15 feet within one reaction, so an Infected should be only able to move 5 feet and be considered clumsy. They can, however, move every reaction, even the players. They have the Unstoppable perk, which means they cannot stop moving until either they are destroyed or otherwise incapable of moving forward. Whether it is crawling or shuffling forward, an Infected must always be moving. That means, on its reaction, on any players reaction, or any NPC’s reaction, the infected can and should move. If the base creature can fly, before infection, then it can do so after infection.

Armor Class: The strike window for an infected should be pretty large as they are not trying to avoid being shot. The strike window must reflect whatever they are wearing at the time of their infection and can change depending on how much damage their body has taken. A 40-point strike window should be appropriate with the window increasing as their size increases.

Base Attack: Damage in this system is very unforgiving. A typical NPC or player should only be able to handle two, maybe three hits, tops. As such, damage for the Infected (and all classes) should be calculated from their base hit die and then add their STR mod twice for damage.

Attacks: An infected retains whatever weapons they had in their hands when they died. All ranged weaponry becomes melee weaponry in the hands of an Infected. All infected have only one attack per reaction. In their repertoire they also have a slam attack and an increased grapple attack. If any target moves within, or past, an infected then the infected automatically gets grapple reaction. Target must move away, past, or through an infected threatened square for the grapple reaction to take place.

Damage: (Please refer to chart above) When grappling, add their STR mod twice (the STR mod is added to the strike window of the target twice). The reasoning is as the infected goes to grapple, they throw their whole weight on the target and thus makes it harder for their prey to escape. They must be within 5 feet of the target. When grappling, the STR mod is used to calculate hit. It must wait till its next reaction to actually damage its target. Calculate damage normally, with an additional die of damage added on. Depending on the DM’s discretion, a bite from an infected has a chance of contamination, which means the target can sustain damage over time unless, its wound is treated, and can eventually die from it. If it does, then it becomes an infected as well. It depends on how the DM wants their infected to transfer the infection. The slam-attack an infected has takes up 2 reactions per size (for example, Colossal takes 14 reactions to perform). The slam has an area of effect that doubles by ten for each size increment, except for the last two in which it increases by 20. Anything caught within the area of effect, be it enemy or ally, takes the damage. **It is important to note that AOE attacks work differently in this system. If an attack connects with multiple targets simultaneously then the damage is rolled for EACH target. There is not one set number, and everything gets that amount. The reasoning behind this is to add individuality to each player. Not everyone will take the same damage, whether it's because of perks, level, or just per luck of nature. That probability allows for each encounter to be different and unique. Certain perks can be used to mitigate the damage. ** Certain perks can be used to mitigate the damage. It is best to learn the signs of an incoming slam attack and take evasive measures to make sure the worst does not come. After the attack, the infected must take a set of time to recover. It is recommended that it takes the same amount of time to recover as it takes to perform the slam attack.

*For harder difficulties (or DM’s discretion), the react/recovery time should be cut in half. *

Special Attacks: It depends on any attributes the infected have taken on, if any, but typically the infected retain none of the base creatures’ special attacks. Depending on any cross mutations (see The Mutated section for more information), the infected can take on a number of elemental properties so long as it makes sense narratively.

Special Qualities: Unless otherwise noted by the DM, a standard infected loses all the special qualities of its base creature. It does retain any extraordinary qualities that improves its melee attacks.

Resistances: An infected feels no pain and thus has resistances to all damage types except for fire. As such, any damage done to an infected automatically gets a -5 damage reduction. If fire is used or a fire-based weapon is used, then the infected takes two additional die of damage.

Skills: An Infected has no skills. Perks: An infected loses all the feats of the base creature but does gain Unstoppable

Size: An Infected comes in seven sizes:

Challenge Rating: Most infected, by themselves, are low on the challenge rating. However, in groups, or multi-classed with other enemy categories, they can quickly rise up to become quite formidable foes. Even one infected, no matter what size, should be seen as a threat, simply because of these possibilities.

Lie of the Year: The Downplay and Denial of the Coronavirus

A Florida taxi driver and his wife had seen enough conspiracy theories online to believe the virus was overblown, maybe even a hoax. So no masks for them. Then they got sick. She died. A college lecturer had trouble refilling her lupus drug after the president promoted it as a treatment for the new disease. A hospital nurse broke down when an ICU patient insisted his illness was nothing worse than the flu, oblivious to the silence in beds next door.   

Lies infected America in 2020. The very worst were not just damaging, but deadly. 

President Donald Trump fueled confusion and conspiracies from the earliest days of the coronavirus pandemic. He embraced theories that COVID-19 accounted for only a small fraction of the thousands upon thousands of deaths. He undermined public health guidance for wearing masks and cast Dr. Anthony Fauci as an unreliable flip-flopper. 

But the infodemic was not the work of a single person. 

Anonymous bad actors offered up junk science. Online skeptics made bogus accusations that hospitals padded their coronavirus case numbers to generate bonus payments. Influential TV and radio opinion hosts told millions of viewers that physical distancing was a joke and that states had all of the personal protective equipment they needed (when they didn’t).

It was a symphony of counter-narrative, and Trump was the conductor, if not the composer. The message: The threat to your health was overhyped to hurt the political fortunes of the president. 

Every year, PolitiFact editors review the year’s most inaccurate statements to elevate one as the Lie of the Year. The “award” goes to a statement, or a collection of claims, that prove to be of substantive consequence in undermining reality. 

It has become harder and harder to choose when cynical pundits and politicians don’t pay much of a price for saying things that aren’t true. For the past month, unproven claims of massive election fraud have tested democratic institutions and certainly qualify as historic and dangerously baldfaced. Fortunately, the constitutional foundations that undergird American democracy are holding.

‘I Wanted to Always Play It Down’

On Feb. 7, Trump leveled with book author Bob Woodward about the dangers of the new virus that was spreading across the world, originating in central China. He told the legendary reporter that the virus was airborne, tricky and “more deadly than even your strenuous flus.”

His acolytes in politics and the media were on the same page. Rush Limbaugh told his audience of about 15 million on Feb. 24 that the coronavirus was being weaponized against Trump when it was just “the common cold, folks.” That’s wrong — even in the early weeks, it was clear the virus had a higher fatality rate than the common cold, with worse potential side effects, too.

As the virus was spreading, so was the message to downplay it. 

“There are lots of sources of misinformation, and there are lots of elected officials besides Trump that have not taken the virus seriously or promoted misinformation,” said Brendan Nyhan, a government professor at Dartmouth College. “It’s not solely a Trump story — and it’s important to not take everyone else’s role out of the narrative.” 

Hijacking the Numbers 

In August, there was a growing movement on Twitter to question the disproportionately high U.S. COVID-19 death toll.  

The skeptics cited Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data to claim that only 6% of COVID-19 deaths could actually be attributed to the virus. On Aug. 24, BlazeTV host Steve Deace amplified it on Facebook.

“Here’s the percentage of people who died OF or FROM Covid with no underlying comorbidity,” he said to his 120,000 followers. “According to CDC, that is just 6% of the deaths WITH Covid so far.”

That misrepresented the reality of coronavirus deaths. The CDC had always said people with underlying health problems — comorbidities — were most vulnerable if they caught COVID-19. The report was noting that 6% died even without being at obvious risk. 

But for those skeptical of COVID-19, the narrative confirmed their beliefs. Facebook users copied and pasted language from influencers like Amiri King, who had 2.2 million Facebook followers before he was banned. The Gateway Pundit called it a “SHOCK REPORT.”

“I saw a statistic come out the other day, talking about only 6% of the people actually died from COVID, which is very interesting — that they died from other reasons,” Trump told Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Sept. 1.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, addressed the claim on “Good Morning America” the same day. 

“The point that the CDC was trying to make was that a certain percentage of them had nothing else but just COVID,” he said. “That does not mean that someone who has hypertension or diabetes who dies of COVID didn’t die of COVID-19 — they did.”

Trump retweeted the message from an account that sported the slogans and symbols of QAnon, a conspiracy movement that claims Democrats and Hollywood elites are members of an underground pedophilia ring. 

False information moved between social media, Trump and TV, creating its own feedback loop.

“It’s an echo effect of sorts, where Donald Trump is certainly looking for information that resonates with his audiences and that supports his political objectives. And his audiences are looking to be amplified, so they’re incentivized to get him their information,” said Kate Starbird, an associate professor and misinformation expert at the University of Washington.

Weakening the Armor: Misleading on Masks

At the start of the pandemic, the CDC told healthy people not to wear masks, saying they were needed for health care providers on the front lines. But on April 3 the agency changed its guidelines, saying every American should wear non-medical cloth masks in public.

Trump announced the CDC’s guidance, then gutted it.

“So it’s voluntary. You don’t have to do it. They suggested for a period of time, but this is voluntary,” Trump said at a press briefing. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it.”

Rather than an advance in best practices on coronavirus prevention, face masks turned into a dividing line between Trump’s political calculations and his decision-making as president. Americans didn’t see Trump wearing a mask until a July visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Meanwhile, disinformers flooded the internet with wild claims: Masks reduced oxygen. Masks trapped fungus. Masks trapped coronavirus. Masks just didn’t work.

In September, the CDC reported a correlation between people who went to bars and restaurants, where masks can’t consistently be worn, and positive COVID-19 test results. Bloggers and skeptical news outlets countered with a misleading report about masks.

On Oct. 13, the story landed on Fox News’ flagship show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” During the show, Carlson claimed “almost everyone — 85% — who got the coronavirus in July was wearing a mask.”

“So clearly [wearing a mask] doesn’t work the way they tell us it works,” Carlson said.

That’s wrong, and it misrepresented a small sample of people who tested positive. Public health officials and infectious disease experts have been consistent since April in saying that face masks are among the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

But two days later, Trump repeated the 85% stat during a rally and at a town hall with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. 

“I tell people, wear masks,” he said at the town hall. “But just the other day, they came out with a statement that 85% of the people that wear masks catch it.”

The Assault on Hospitals 

On March 24, registered nurse Melissa Steiner worked her first shift in the new COVID-19 ICU of her southeastern Michigan hospital. After her 13-hour workday caring for two critically ill patients on ventilators, she posted a tearful video.

“Honestly, guys, it felt like I was working in a war zone,” Steiner said. “[I was] completely isolated from my team members, limited resources, limited supplies, limited responses from physicians because they’re just as overwhelmed.” 

“I’m already breaking, so for f—’s sake, people, please take this seriously. This is so bad.”

Steiner’s post was one of many emotional pleas offered by overwhelmed hospital workers last spring urging people to take the threat seriously. The denialists mounted a counteroffensive.

On March 28, Todd Starnes, a conservative radio host and commentator, tweeted a video from outside Brooklyn Hospital Center. There were few people or cars in sight.

“This is the ‘war zone’ outside the hospital in my Brooklyn neighborhood,” Starnes said sarcastically. The video racked up more than 1.5 million views.

Starnes’ video was one of the first examples of #FilmYourHospital, a conspiratorial social media trend that pushed back on the idea that hospitals had been strained by a rapid influx of coronavirus patients. 

Several internet personalities asked people to go out and shoot their own videos. The result: a series of user-generated clips taken outside hospitals, where the response to the pandemic was not easily seen. Over the course of a week, #FilmYourHospital videos were uploaded to YouTube and posted tens of thousands of times on Twitter and Facebook.

Nearly two weeks and more than 10,000 deaths later, Fox News featured a guest who opened a new misinformation assault on hospitals.

Dr. Scott Jensen, a Minnesota physician and Republican state senator, told Ingraham that, because hospitals were receiving more money for COVID-19 patients on Medicare — a result of a coronavirus stimulus bill — they were overcounting COVID-19 cases. He had no proof of fraud, but the cynical story took off. 

Trump used the false report on the campaign trail to continue to minimize the death toll. 

“Our doctors get more money if somebody dies from COVID,” Trump told supporters at a rally in Waterford, Michigan, on Oct. 30. “You know that, right? I mean, our doctors are very smart people. So what they do is they say, ‘I’m sorry, but, you know, everybody dies of COVID.’”  

The Real Fake News: The Plandemic

The most viral disinformation of the pandemic was styled to look as if it had the blessing of people Americans trust: scientists and doctors.

In a 26-minute video called “Plandemic: The Hidden Agenda Behind COVID-19,” a former scientist at the National Cancer Institute claimed the virus was manipulated in a lab, hydroxychloroquine is effective against coronaviruses, and face masks make people sick. 

Judy Mikovits’ conspiracies received more than 8 million views, partly credited to the online outrage machine — anti-vaccine activists, anti-lockdown groups and QAnon supporters — that push disinformation into the mainstream. The video was circulated in a coordinated effort to promote Mikovits’ book release.

Around the same time, a similar effort propelled another video of fact-averse doctors to millions of people in only a few hours. 

On July 27, Breitbart published a clip of a press conference hosted by a group called America’s Frontline Doctors in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. Looking authoritative in white lab coats, these doctors discouraged mask-wearing and falsely said there was already a cure in hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

Trump, who had been talking up the drug since March and claimed to be taking it himself as a preventive measure in May, retweeted clips of the event before Twitter removed them as misinformation about COVID-19. He defended the “very respected doctors” in a July 28 press conference. 

When Olga Lucia Torres, a lecturer at Columbia University, heard Trump touting the drug in March, she knew it didn’t bode well for her own prescription. Sure enough, the misinformation led to a run on hydroxychloroquine, creating a shortage for Americans like her who needed the drug for chronic conditions. 

A lupus patient, she went to her local pharmacy to request a 90-day supply of the medication. But she was told they were granting only partial refills. It took her three weeks to get her medication through the mail. 

“What about all the people who were silenced and just lost access to their staple medication because people ran to their doctors and begged to take it?” Torres said.

No Sickbed Conversion

On Sept. 26, Trump hosted a Rose Garden ceremony to announce his nominee to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court. More than 150 people attended the event introducing Amy Coney Barrett. Few wore masks, and the chairs weren’t spaced out.

In the weeks afterward, more than two dozen people close to Trump and the White House became infected with COVID-19. Early on Oct. 2, Trump announced his positive test.

Those hoping the experience and Trump’s successful treatment at Walter Reed might inform his view of the coronavirus were disappointed. Trump snapped back into minimizing the threat during his first moments back at the White House. He yanked off his mask and recorded a video.

“Don’t let it dominate you. Don’t be afraid of it,” he said, describing experimental and mostly out-of-reach therapies he received. “You’re going to beat it.” 

In Trump’s telling, his hospitalization was not the product of poor judgment about large gatherings like the Rose Garden event, but the consequence of leading with bravery. Plus, now, he claimed, he had immunity to the virus.

On the morning after he returned from Walter Reed, Trump tweeted a seasonal flu death count of 100,000 lives and added that COVID-19 was “far less lethal” for most populations. More false claims at odds with data — the U.S. average for flu deaths over the past decade is 36,000, and experts said COVID-19 is more deadly for each age group over 30.

When Trump left the hospital, the U.S. death toll from COVID-19 was more than 200,000. Today it is more than 300,000. Meanwhile, this month the president has gone ahead with a series of indoor holiday parties. 

The Vaccine War 

The vaccine disinformation campaign started in the spring but is still underway.

In April, blogs and social media users falsely claimed Democrats and powerful figures like Bill Gates wanted to use microchips to track which Americans had been vaccinated for the coronavirus. Now, false claims are taking aim at vaccines developed by Pfizer and BioNTech and other companies.

A blogger claimed Pfizer’s head of research said the coronavirus vaccine could cause female infertility. That’s false.

An alternative health website wrote that the vaccine could cause an array of life-threatening side effects, and that the FDA knew about it. The list included all possible — not confirmed— side effects.

Social media users speculated that the federal government would force Americans to receive the vaccine. Neither Trump nor President-elect Joe Biden has advocated for that, and the federal government doesn’t have the power to mandate vaccines, anyway.

As is often the case with disinformation, the strategy is to deliver it with a charade of certainty. 

“People are anxious and scared right now,” said Dr. Seema Yasmin, director of research and education programs at the Stanford Health Communication Initiative. “They’re looking for a whole picture.” 

Most polls have shown far from universal acceptance of vaccines, with only 50% to 70% of respondents willing to take the vaccine. Black and Hispanic Americans are even less likely to take it so far.

Meanwhile, the future course of the coronavirus in the U.S. depends on whether Americans take public health guidance to heart. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected that, without mask mandates or a rapid vaccine rollout, the death toll could rise to more than 500,000 by April 2021.

“How can we come to terms with all that when people are living in separate informational realities?” Starbird said.

A college lecturer had trouble refilling her lupus drug after the president promoted it as a treatment for the new disease. A hospital nurse broke down when an ICU patient insisted his illness was nothing worse than the flu, oblivious to the silence in beds next door.   

Lies infected America in 2020. The very worst were not just damaging, but deadly. 

President Donald Trump fueled confusion and conspiracies from the earliest days of the coronavirus pandemic. He embraced theories that COVID-19 accounted for only a small fraction of the thousands upon thousands of deaths. He undermined public health guidance for wearing masks and cast Dr. Anthony Fauci as an unreliable flip-flopper. 

But the infodemic was not the work of a single person. 

Anonymous bad actors offered up junk science. Online skeptics made bogus accusations that hospitals padded their coronavirus case numbers to generate bonus payments. Influential TV and radio opinion hosts told millions of viewers that physical distancing was a joke and that states had all of the personal protective equipment they needed (when they didn’t).

It was a symphony of counter-narrative, and Trump was the conductor, if not the composer. The message: The threat to your health was overhyped to hurt the political fortunes of the president. 

Every year, PolitiFact editors review the year’s most inaccurate statements to elevate one as the Lie of the Year. The “award” goes to a statement, or a collection of claims, that prove to be of substantive consequence in undermining reality. 

It has become harder and harder to choose when cynical pundits and politicians don’t pay much of a price for saying things that aren’t true. For the past month, unproven claims of massive election fraud have tested democratic institutions and certainly qualify as historic and dangerously baldfaced. Fortunately, the constitutional foundations that undergird American democracy are holding. 

Meanwhile, the coronavirus has killed more than 300,000 in the United States, a crisis exacerbated by the reckless spread of falsehoods.

A blogger claimed Pfizer’s head of research said the coronavirus vaccine could cause female infertility. That’s false.

An alternative health website wrote that the vaccine could cause an array of life-threatening side effects, and that the FDA knew about it. The list included all possible — not confirmed— side effects.

Social media users speculated that the federal government would force Americans to receive the vaccine. Neither Trump nor President-elect Joe Biden has advocated for that, and the federal government doesn’t have the power to mandate vaccines, anyway.

As is often the case with disinformation, the strategy is to deliver it with a charade of certainty. 

“People are anxious and scared right now,” said Dr. Seema Yasmin, director of research and education programs at the Stanford Health Communication Initiative. “They’re looking for a whole picture.” 

Most polls have shown far from universal acceptance of vaccines, with only 50% to 70% of respondents willing to take the vaccine. Black and Hispanic Americans are even less likely to take it so far.

Meanwhile, the future course of the coronavirus in the U.S. depends on whether Americans take public health guidance to heart. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected that, without mask mandates or a rapid vaccine rollout, the death toll could rise to more than 500,000 by April 2021.

“How can we come to terms with all that when people are living in separate informational realities?” Starbird said.

Actually this is my blog and I can do whatever I want, so I'll put it under a cut for those interested.

So, Charmander! There are a few reasons it's the worst starter in gen 1 from an efficiency standpoint, as the early game is seemingly stacked against it. But Charmander has a few good qualities; it's the fastest starter, which not only means it's the best at dispatching foes before they get a move, it also means it has the highest critical hit rate, as in RBY, crit rate is calculated based on speed. It's also the only Fire Type available for most of the game, so if you want to use one it may as well be Charmander. However, gen 1 isn't a good place for Fire Types in general, which further feeds into Charmander's difficulties. From here I'm going to do a basic point by point look into Charmander, going through each evolutionary stage.

The first stage is Charmander. Charmander's speed allows it to always move before your rival's Squirtle, which helps you get the nice starting level and money for winning that early battle. Once it learns Ember at level 9, Viridian Forest is utterly trivial, even moreso than for the other two, because Ember will one shot pretty much every Bug Type you see here. You need that experience, because the first Gym Leader is Brock, who uses Geodude and Onix. Rock types resist both Normal and Fire moves, so Charmander is already at an immediate disadvantage. Many options have been explored for how best to get Charmander through this fight, ranging from catching a Nidoran and leveling it until it learns Low Kick to catching a Caterpie and leveling it until it evolves into Butterfree and learns Confusion. But in my experience the most efficient approach, unless you're planning to continue using that Nidoran or Butterfree, is to just power level Charmander through Viridian Forest, then fight Brock by just mashing Ember over and over, maybe using Growl a few times on Onix while it wastes turns on Bide. Geodude and Onix may resist Fire moves, but their special stat and hit points are notably terrible, so Ember is usually enough to win the day on its own if Charmander is a sufficiently high level. Afterwards we get to Rock Tunnel. Not much happens here that sets Charmander apart from Bulbsaur or Squirtle, but you can find the Mega Punch TM here, and I would recommend using it on Charmander to give it a stronger (but less accurate) replacement for Scratch. It's not going to be helpful for long, but you can always buy another one in Celadon City if you need it. But by the time you get out of this cave, Charmander will likely have evolved, bringing us to...

Charmeleon! Charmeleon is a direct upgrade over Charmander, as you might expect. However, its time as Charmeleon is its most difficult point in the game, because the next Gym Leader is Misty, who uses Staryu and Starmie; Water type Pokemon. You cannot brute force your way through Misty, Charmeleon needs help here, which once again brings up to the topic of partners for it. Fortunately, this time you have options; if you caught a Pikachu in Viridian Forest, you may have raised it to a high enough level where Thundershock does meaningful damage to Misty's Pokemon. If you used a Nidoran to beat Brock, you may have also evolved it, and used a Moon Stone to evolve it again, giving you Nidoking or Nidoqueen, both of which are weak to Water but may have the stats needed to brute force the fight like Charmander against Brock. New options are also available, including Oddish or Bellsprout, depending on your version, either of which serves as a sort of discount version of Bulbasaur. My preferred method, however, is to buy the Magikarp outside Mt. Moon and switch train it until it evolves into Gyarados, which can easily tear Misty's team apart. It's worth noting that once you visit Bill, you can move onto Vermilion City and the S.S. Anne without needing to beat Misty first, so there's plenty of chances to continue training Magikarp. Before you leave Cerulean City, though, you'll receive the TM for Dig. Teach this to Charmeleon immediately. Dig has a base power of 100 in gen 1, equal to Earthquake, and as you may have noticed, Charmeleon hasn't learned any new moves through level up that are actually helpful. This unfortunate trend haunts Charmeleon's sizeable section of the game, as Ember declines in usefulness, with no other fire move to replace it. Eventually, however, hope shines through, and Charmeleon learns Slash. Slash is supposed to have a higher critical hit rate, which in this generation translates to critting more than 99% of the time. Slash is also only resisted by Rock types, which are largely behind you by now, and doesn't work against Ghost types, of which there is only one evolution line which is also conveniently weak to Dig. This boost of power is very shortly followed by Charmeleon evolving into its final form...

Charizard! The great red (orange) dragon itself. In most games, Charizard is a dramatic transformation, gaining the Flying type (not Dragon, as that would upset the type triangle) and access to Flying moves. This, however, is NOT one of those games. Yes, Charizard is Flying type in Red and Blue, but for some reason it cannot learn Fly. This is corrected in Yellow, and if you're not playing Yellow I would recommend trading your Charizard over there to teach it Fly and then trade it back, if possible. In fact, if you're open to that idea, you might want to trade your Charmeleon into any generation 2 game (Gold, Silver, Crystal) once it reaches level 33, because there it will learn Flamethrower at level 34, making Charizard an instant powerhouse. If not, however, Charizard is more or less just another direct upgrade. Despite its impressive appearance, Charizard is still stuck with Ember. In this generation, Charizard only learns Flamethrower at level 46, ten levels after it evolves. This is indefensible from a design standpoint, and it presents a challenge, but there is a solution. Before now, gyms were mostly linear, but from Misty onward you can do them in more or less any order, with Giovanni (spoiler alert) always being last. What we need is the Fire Blast TM from Blaine, but in order to reach him, we need the Surf HM from the Safari Zone and the gym badge from Koga, so now we have to make a beeline for Fuchsia City. Slash and Dig should hopefully be enough to carry Charizard through this gym, and once you can get to Cinnabar Island, Blaine is a trivial fight. Fire Blast gives Charizard what it needs most; a powerful Fire attack. Once you have Fire Blast, Charizard is more or less set for the rest of the game. Eventually it'll learn Flamethrower, which you may prefer over Fire Blast with its better PP and accuracy, though if you can't learn Fly you may as well keep both. You may also consider teaching Charizard Earthquake as an upgrade to Dig, but while Earthquake is strictly better, I think Dig is still good enough that I'd teach Earthquake to a different party member instead if I had a good choice for one. Even now, though, Charizard can't solo its way through the game, as Giovanni and the Elite 4 pose challenges. Powerful allies, such as Jolteon or Raichu, Snorlax, Gyarados or Vaporeon, Vileplume or Victreebel, Nidoking or Nidoqueen, and Kadabra or Alakazam, can get you through fights that Charizard would have a poor matchup against. I personally always raise a Dratini and evolve it into Dragonite before challenging the Elite 4, but I'm not going to pretend that's in any way efficient. Remember that Fire doesn't resist Ice in this generation, so Charizard is actually weak to Lorelei's Ice attacks. Bruno is pretty much never challenging, and Agatha's Pokemon struggle to take a Dig from Charizard. Lance is significantly more difficult, but well-chosen allies are usually enough to make it through this without Charizard being involved. And lastly the champion battle, which is actually easier because you chose Charizard, as this means he will have Blastoise instead of the more threatening Gyarados, though Charizard itself doesn't have an excellent matchup here. It can, however, deal with the otherwise annoying Exeggutor.

In conclusion, Charmander is a great choice if you prefer a more traditional style of playthrough where you use a variety of team members working together. Bulbasaur and Squirtle can do this as well, but substitutes for Bulbasaur appear early on, and outside of availability, Squirtle actually isn't the best Water type in this game, as the sheer number of them leads to a lot of competition. Bulbasaur and Squirtle can also solo the game much more easily than Charmander, adding even less incentive to diversify your party. I've always found Charmander the most satisfying starter to choose, and hopefully my methods will make it more enjoyable for you as well!

Y'know I could probably write a decent guide on how to play with Charmander in Red/Blue, it's a bit trickier than using Bulbasaur or Squirtle, as everyone knows, but I think I've figured some things out that make it work pretty consistently

The whistle-in forest was vast. The purple haze coming down gently as a warning of the impending sunset. It was a good payoff taking a mission to help some villagers be rid of some terrorising bandits. While they had no rare items to offer the bit of gold as well as a couple potions to boost stats the Beatles took gratefully. Walking back to the nearest town should have a reward in itself however. Walking miles on foot and had till sundown to make it before the nightime dangers would show their faces in their domain. "Ya know I was really hopin that at some point a coupla' thieves or pissy merchants would scamper our way and we could show 'em what we're made of and take their horses so we wouldnt hav'ta use all our bloody energy just walkin!" John complained Paul's way. "Oh you know very well that village didn't have much to offer and if we tried to take even one horse we would be steppin the line and I don't want to get into trouble for taking more than what we were given, not after_!" Paul remarked not even looking behind at John, who was dragging his feet obnoxiously crunching the dead leaves that blanketed the forest floor. "Well mr. goody good!" John stopped. "From the looks of it we're not gonna make it out of 'ere by sundown!" Hearing that news George and Ringo groaned in frustration. Ringo pinched the bridge of his nose not in the mood for an argument to begin. "Look before we start blamin each other for the naturewalk we can't stop now unless we wanta' be stuck here even longer." said Ringo. "Rings' right." Paul agreed. "No point in waitin for anything so even if we dont want to we gotta walk." "Geo you've been awful quiet halfway through us comin here. What's eatin' ya?" Paul asked the Cleric walking beside him. His serious resting face looking more intense. "I ju-" A strong autumn wind suddenly blew their way, blowing back their capes and coats, whilst being pelted by a barrage of orange and red leaves. "You were sayin?" The fighter chuckled smoothing his hair down looking at his friends long hair blown into every direction. George huffed moving the hair out of his eyes and throwing the hood of his coat over. "I was gonna say I just don't like the feel of this place. I'm feelin bad energies 'round..." "I suppose I understand where you're comin at." replied Paul looking around. "Don't have those magic senses a yours but it does feel the trees are gettin bigger the further we go...cheer up Georgie!" It was only when a wave of fog streamed through the the two magic users shuddered with wide eyes. "Strange brew..." Ringo muttered. "Lads I don't wanna alarm you to much but we-" "Witch territory...Rings..." George interupted pointing up above asking Ringo to move the light where he gestured at. A large cocoon the size of a human hung from the tall braches above, then four more, then eight more, then a whole plethora could be seen. John fidgeted with his glasses. "These aren't..." John didn't have to say what they actually were because the mere thought of it alone was nervewraking enough. These were no cocoons...they were giant spider victims wrapped in their silk. Unable to move or scream if they were yet to die. The team moved closer together all back to back facing each direction fearing the worst of a surprise attack each readying their attack. "We need to try and get out of here, if we do it slowly then we shouldn't be seen." Paul instructed trying to fix the situation. Small spiders were fine but whatever could make that display was not an opponent Paul was mentally prepared to face. Paul looked over to the two magic users in the group. "Where's the witch...?" "Witches don't show their faces unless ya make it to their den." George answered still locked in readying attack. "My best guess is what's makin these is what this witch is kin with." "A spider witch?" John interjected. "Well then we can just find and squash the bitch!" "I wouldn't." said Ringo. "Even the lesser of a witches 'ave magic stronger than Geo and I combined. Fellas like you an' Paul frankly would stand an even lesser chance." John gulped. "Do they now..." A shuffle could be heard in the branches. All eyes shot towards the sound. A sword, daggers, a mage hand, and a fireball pointing it's way. Paul raked his mind for a way to get the group out safely, this was all his idea anyway but he wasn't planning on this! Hinting at the rest to follow his lead with gentle steps in hopes of not drawing attention by what would be regularly an aggresive stomp of the dry leaves on the forest floor. Another gust of wind soared their way even stronger than the last this time the four having the keep grounded preventing the possibility of being knocked back. It's was then the beast showed it's face. It was too late now, as a giant spider dropped itself down to the ground leaving a string of thick silk behind. This was no spider any of the Beatles has seen before. It was twice the size of a horse. It had horns on its head and its jowels, as well as one large eye in the center of its face being surrounded by the other seven slightly smaller eyes and they were all pointed at the four. "FUCKING SHIT!" John screamed. Without hesitation Ringo hurled a fireball at the Spider queen. The abominable arachnid shrieking as the spell scorched it. Enraged it then barreled head on to the group forcing them to split. John and Ringo on one side Paul and George on the other. "Ya see what I said! I knew something was off! I bloody knew it!" George exclaimed whilst using mage hand to fight. "wELL I-" Paul began to defend his descision making before one of the insects massive legs darted towards him the fighter then using his sword to deflect trying to shake it off. "This is it Paul! Next time I feel some fucking junk is about wherever we are! I'm leaving!" George continued to chastise Paul while casting mage hand to also fend off the Spider queen. "I dont care if you disagree either! You should have just heard me! I'm tired of not being heard! I'm not a child you know!" Those words struck Paul. He didn't mean to have the Cleric feel that way. Was he really brushing him off that much? Many thoughts threatening to throw the fighter off focus but there was no time to talk things out like well respected traveling heroes. They had a bigass bug that was controlled by a hidden witch who is going to kill them if they don't find a way to beat it sooner than it beats them. The battle continued on with the two magic users casting some of their best spells in hopes of weakening the monster. Paul taking wide swings with his sword. John who had disappeared into the trees was attempting to try and locate a weak spot on the beast so he could then try to execute a sneak attack and end the battle quicker. Watching the fight below whilst scouting out a good spot here above to jump from was interupted from John's mind when he bumped into something soft. "What the hell?" Adjusting his glasses he gasped seeing he had bumped into one of the "things" wrapped by the Spider queen. It was definitely human sized. Feeling panic begin to fester he moved past quickly only the continue to see this hanging graveyard of dozens of bodies around the tree tops. The gravity of this situation hit the rogue like a stone in a puddle. Not only if they lose could they die. But a gate even more terrible is the idea of him or worse his friends being taken hostage alive or barely hanging on. Held immobile upside down to slowly perish and become this monsters meal. Tired of trying to mentally calculate the weaknesses of a creature he had never even faced before John readied his daggers and jumped onto the Spider queens thorax and sinking in the blades through her exoskeleton. Seeing the move finally add more heavy damage to it what John didn't anticipate was It's powerful shriek following it bucking him off of her much like a raging bull, the rogue flying off hitting a tree. The two daggers still stabbed deep with dark olive green blood oozing from the wounds. "John!" the other three yelled in unison. "You better not be yellin at me cause youre worried! It better be a thank you for guttin that thing!" John yelled back sitting up recovering and pulling another dagger from his coat. The three smiled in relief at Johns constant humor even in his attempts to hide his fear. This didn't help much however with the continued arguments between Paul and George. Ringo stuck in the middle of the bullshit (again). Reminding them to fully focus on the goal of not dying. The spider queen was looking more worse for wear but the same could be said for the four lads. Both foes growing weary but in no means ready to back down. The spider queen fully opened the large middle eye it bearing resemblance to a human eye. The iris pink and the pupil widening as it reeled in the four to its ultimate ability. The purple haze that had long entwined with the woods in the afternoon seemed to grow and envelope them in Paul, John, and Ringos eyes. It was relaxing much like a high actually. The intoxicated three then felt their minds go fuzzy and their bodies wobble beneath them. Paul swore he heard someone shouting at them but he then drifted away into a dark dreamless sleep the last his image in his mind was that pale pink eye.

Basset Hounds: a new low?

One of the things I found most depressing when making Pedigree Dogs Exposed was seeing a young male show male Basset squat to have a pee and see the urine splash all over the dog's belly.

No dog should have so little ground clearance that they risk damaging their penis when going for a walk on anything other than green baize.  Originally a hunting hound, today's show Basset is short and heavy and in no way fit for its original purpose, even if the mind is still willing. We know this, because there are still Bassets that do hunt out there - and they look like this.

In the aftermath of Pedigree Dogs Exposed, the Kennel Club introduced vet checks at championship shows for what were then known as "high profile breeds" - essentially those with the worst conformation problems. The Basset was one of them.  

In 2012, this dog (Ch Buzz Lightyear at Dereheath) won Best of Breed at Crufts but was then disqualified after failing his vet-check, albeit for an eye problem, not his resemblance to a badly-fitting valance.

There was uproar in the show-world.  But the Kennel Club held firm, the vet checks continue to do this day and Buzz was never bred from,  

Even better, the following year,  this dog won best of breed at Crufts 2013. Result!

But... but... the 2013 BOB has never been bred from either (considered too moderate perhaps?) and the next year this massively overdone bitch won.

Since then, it's been up and down but mostly down. In 2018 it was good to see this more moderate bitch (Switherland Smart Alice) win.

But overall, the trend has been back towards lower, heavier dogs.  The murmurings from ringside is that this breed, with less focus on it in recent years,  is slipping back to where it was.

Which brings us back to the dogs featured at the top of this post. On the left is this year's Crufts winner,  Ch Switherland Smart Image (Danny to his friends) and on the right is Malrich Paris Carver. This pic was taken last week at Richmond Championship Show where Danny won BOB under breed specialist judge Judith Murray. 

In fact Danny went on to come second in the group under Swedish judge Miss MA E Persson. She will doubtless be familiar with the Swedish Kennel Club guidance re Basset Hounds that includes a concern regarding ground clearance and excess skin.

The UK Kennel Club has something similar guarding against excess skin and too little ground clearance.

So I am guessing that six-year-old Danny, looks good on the move for a dwarf breed. As the KC's Breed Health + Conservation Plan notes:

Yep, it's a developmental abnormality that, frankly, you wouldn't wish on anything (however stoically that being may deal with it) but in the Basset Hound this is considered a breed feature not a disease. Moreover, it's something us humans have deliberately bred for - a handicap initially designed to slow them down on the hunting field and more latterly because it wins pretty ribbons. But it's a heck of a burden to impose on a dog. And no surprise then that they suffer a number of muscoskeletal issues as a result.  In the US, 40 per cent of more than 200 Bassets that have been tested have been found to suffer from hip dysplasia and 15% have elbow dysplasia. In a recent UK breed club survey, almost 20% of the breed were recorded as having conformation-linked disease.

However, only a pitiful four Bassets have been hip-scored in the UK in the past 15yrs. And only six dogs have had their elbows tested - with only one having normal elbows. (See the breed specific stats here.) Concern about elbows is such that testing is recommended by the Kennel Club. But no one does it. And, finally, there's one big, dwarfy elephant in the room for Bassets: inbreeding. The KC calculates the average co-efficient in the breed as 10%, but there are some top winning dogs that have COIs way higher than that. Like Switherland Smart Image, the big winner featured above.

Bearing on mind that this is more inbred than a father/daughter or full-sibling mating, this is going some. Moreover, despite the breed's health and conservation plan raising concern about the inbreeding in Bassets, this mating went ahead in 2017.

On top of that Switherland Smart Image was first used at stud at just 10 months old and so was a son from that litter, Switherland Smart Alec. Two months later, Smart Alec was mated again (like his dad bred before any health testing had been done), resulting in another very high COI litter (24.2%) but producing the 2018 Crufts winner Switherland Smart Alice. Ta-daa.... inbreeding (or line-breeding as the breeders like to call it to make it sound less bad) works when it comes to winning prizes in the show-ring. At least in the short-term. Sometimes.  But it will be the death of the breed - if fashion doesn't kill it first. Registrations for this breed have dropped by two thirds in the past 10 years, with under 500 registered in 2018. Potential buyers might smile at the 'funny' pix of Bassets swimming in their skin as they run but the hound predisposition to being whiffy - often exacerbated by their skin problems - do not in the main make these dogs easy house guests.

To sum up... there has been some movement on Basset health since Pedigree Dogs Exposed - their eyes are considerably better than the droopy red wells that were almost ubiquitous in 2008. We also much less often see the Queen Anne legs of yesteryear. But it's deeply depressing to see heavier and lower dogs in the ring again, when really we should be going the opposite way. This is a dog called Laval of Lohaire and although I haven't been able to track him down (anyone?) I think he dates from the 1930s/1940s and really, how much better is he for having longer legs and none of the mad, useless skin that is an affectation of the show-ring?

The anti shenanigans Miltank set - Pokemon Battle Spot

So you want to enjoy battle spot, but you’re sick of all the toxic-stalling, minimizing, para-flinching battlers out there who take so much pleasure from making you mad. Well worry no longer because this cow's here to squash some trolls and drink some milk...

Starting with the pokemon, Miltank is a versatile beast with three excellent abilities:

- Thick Fat (takes half damage to fire and ice)

- Sap SIpper (immune grass moves and receives a +1 attack boost when hit by them)

- Scrappy (can hit ghosts with normal type moves)

The Set:

Four key moves make this pokemon a great status absorbing, attack boosting, minimize-busting nightmare:

Miltank @ Sitrus Berry Ability: Scrappy EVs: 252 HP / 252 Att / 4 Spe Impish Nature - Body Slam - Heal Bell - Milk Drink  - Curse  

- Body Slam

85 base power, normal type STAB (same type attack bonus), 30% chance to cause paralysis and if the opposing pokemon has used minimize its base power doubles and it always hits. This is a great offensive utility move that combined with Miltank’s Scrappy ability will hit everything (though you’ll have to boost a lot to hit rock and steel types well).

- Heal Bell

Removes status conditions from all of your pokemon - the best status removal move in the game and will ensure you can beat toxic stallers.

- Milk Drink

Restores 50% of maximum HP to the user. An excellent recovery move not affected by weather (like some others are) and only learnt by three pokemon.

- Curse

On non-ghost type pokemon this move raises attack by one stage, defence by one stage and decreases speed by one stage. The speed decrease is regrettable on a pokemon with a decent speed stat, however, the attack and defence buffs make it more than worth it.

 - Ability: Scrappy

As there is only one offensive move on our set we have to run the ability Scrappy so that Miltank can hit ghost type pokemon. This also key for our minimize-busting abilities as there are some ghost-type pokemon known to use minimize (Drifblim and Chandlure being two common examples) that Miltank wouldn’t be able to hit otherwise.

- The EV spread, nature and item:

252 EVs in HP gives Miltank enough bulk to tank initial hits along with the sitrus berry, which turns 2HKOs into 3HKOs ensuring you can get a curse then milk drink off. 252 EVs in attack are necessary as Miltank has only 80 base attack and even with curse boosts she is still too weak without it.4 EVs in speed allows her to outspeed other non-invested base 100 speed pokemon.

Impish nature (+defence - special attack) over Adamant because we’re investing no EVs in defence and so need the extra 10%.

The Calculations

You might be thinking, ‘But Miltank’s an NU pokemon, why would I use her?’ This is why:

You can switch into an outraging Garchomp, milk drink until he’s confused, curse up then squash him dead (body slam does 59.5-71% at +2 attack - outrage does 22.7 - 27.2% at +2 defence). An Outrage from Garchomp is just about one of the strongest neutral hits in the game and Miltank takes it as a 3HKO (three hit knock out). That’s the bulk we’re dealing with.

Another important calculation is how Miltank does against one of the game’s worst offenders for minimizing - Alolan Muk:

This calculation is based on a max attack Alolan Muk, which minimizing ones will rarely be as they usually concentrate more on defence. Even so we’re looking at 3HKOs - 4HKOs if only poison jab is run, and after a minimize Miltank’s attack doubles to 63.2-74.4%, which is a guaranteed 2HKO even before any curse boosts. 

One of the worst offenders for para-flinching in 6th Generation Pokemon was unfortunately Gyarados, who would paralyze you with thunder wave and then hammer waterfall until all the fun was drained out of the game; so let’s see how Miltank squares up against him:

Before any boosts we’re looking at 4HKOs from max attack adamant Gyarados, which gives plenty of chances to heal bell off the paralysis, milk drink some health and get in some curses - at +2 Miltank 2HKOs Gyarados and Gyarados does basically nothing to Miltank

For a final calculation let’s look at one of the worst offenders for toxic-stalling in the game...Gliscor:

A typical defensive Gliscor set struggles to 5HKO Miltank. Meanwhile Miltank heals off toxic and boosts up. Even if Gliscor uses swords dances to boost his attack, you can just curse up alongside him and he’ll never get to a level where he can take you down.

Final note

In order for this set to work you need a strong specially defensive wall in your team, as Miltank doesn’t have the best bulk on the special side and your opponent is going to want to switch in a special attacker once they’ve finished underestimating you. Goodra is a good choice; as is assault vest Reuniclus who will resist your fighting weakness and can pivot with its regenerator ability; as is assault vest Araquanid who again resists the fighting weakness and hits extremely hard with liquidation.
