Looking at your recent commissions, those backgrounds are soo pretty!! Do you have any tips for backgrounds? I always struggle with them :>

backgrounds can absolutely be a struggle but they don't have to be! they just require a little more creative planning~!

whether it be a commission or a personal drawing, if I'm building an elaborate art piece i focus on establishing the background First.

the background is the stage for your character! planning the background first will make it easier to tailor the character's actions and how they interact with the environment around them.

planning the background first can be the difference between your character standing awkwardly front and center with the setting going on behind them, or actually participating in their environment.

if i'm super stumped for background ideas, i browse stock image sites to get inspiration. sometimes it helps to doodle on an image to generate some ideas - kinda like you're playing with JPEGs like dolls.

that said - while i'm pinpointing WHAT i want to draw, i keep the ideas loose. i don't want to focus on the itty-bitty details until i've got the overall aesthetic and layout in mind, as i might get inspired to add something in later!

THUMBNAILING

if you're planning a big piece it can be helpful to break it down into something bite-sized before you go all in and start lining or painting. these are "thumbnails" - fast little sketches that establish the scene in a way that doesn't consume a lot of time or effort. it's also great as a little perspective exercise as a treat.

here i decided i want to draw a character walking home in a back alley street. with these photo references in mind, i can plan a layout and how the character will act in the scene. is this a candid shot? are they posing cutely? are they looking down at us in a tense way? there are many ideas to be had!

after you've chosen the layout / vibe for your idea, you can scale up your thumbnail to your preferred canvas size and start fleshing out the details. be sure to keep referring to your reference images to get additional ideas, such as storefronts, items, props etc!

3D MODELS

If you're trying to create a unique environment that photo references simply cannot help you visualize, 3D models exist! This gives you that ability to rotate / scale things for better visualization. Clip Studio has a vast catalogue of 3D models to download For Free that you can fiddle around with. i know there are many 3D builder sites out there as well, though i've never made use of them so i'm afraid i cannot recommend any off the top of my head. hell, you can even use the Sims game to design a setting and go from there!

also if anyone is going to come into my house and say 3D models are cheating: they are not. using a 3D model to better grasp an angle or get a better idea for perspective is not cheating. using 3D models to help plan the environment in your art is not cheating. they are no different than brushes; these are tools made to HELP YOU. use them!

PERSPECTIVE

perspective and angles can make a HUGE difference in the art piece. there's nothing wrong with static long shots! if that's what you want to draw, do it!! there's no right and wrong here!

but if you're finding your work to be a little robotic and stiff, slap an angle in there. consider an overhead view. these same techniques are applied to photography and film! nothing wrong with wide shots, but every once in a while it can help to throw in a dutch angle.

if there is one note i'd like to leave off on, it's that your backgrounds do not have to be 100% accurate-to-life to be Good. unless realism is something you're really striving for in your style, don't feel compelled to nitpick every brick and leaf in your art. us artists can tend to over-prune our work until our art looks a little bare and soulless. flaws can give your work character, and that's often a lot more appealing than how accurate the scale ratio between background building A and building B are [again, unless you WANT to go for that realistic look then you can fuss over those details all you like].

The whole point of working off a prompt is to explore a creative process, anyway - do yourself a favour and just enjoy making something! It doesn't have to be pretty! No reposting of other people's works. This must be your own creation. Obviously, no transphobic content. No harrassing others over their specific headcanons - be it in regards to any trait or quirks that come with being a person. People come in all sorts of wonderful variety, please respect that. In addition to above: No whitewashing, racism etc. Please note that Krem is not pale-skinned in canon, and I will not be reblogging content of him being portrayed as pale. 18+ works need to be labelled. General tips:

First and foremost, do what you are able to! Don't feel pressured to complete a full week if you need to take care of yourself first. Some people work on the prompts before the week even begins, and only post it day of. You are not required to do this, but if you really want to fill something for each day, this helps reduce stress day of.

Mod things:

The mod isn't from the Americas, so due to timezone differences, there may be a delay in reblogging people's works. Either way I will not reblog the moment that it's posted in order to screen properly. Posts will be queued between 30mins-1hr apart, if there are multiple entries being submitted at the same time. All submissions will also be requeued after a week for later perusal :)

Long story short, my housing situation got a lot more expensive and I’m running low on scholarships. It’s my senior year and I graduate in December, so I just need to get through until then—but I’m stressed as hell about being able to afford my last semester in college. I would really appreciate any help :( and you get art out of it!

Basics

I can do just about anything in terms of species. Humans, D&D races, anthro/furry, animal/feral, mechanical, monstrous, alien, cyborg alien beasts, you name it.

I can also draw pets, you, friends and family, fictional characters, whatever.

I can do mild to moderate gore, but I don't have experience with excessive gore, nor do I really like it. Same for body horror.

I will not draw NSFW art. Non-graphic nudity or romantic moments are cool though!

I reserve the right to turn down requests based on my availability, whether I believe them to be out of my skill range, etc, etc.

Notes:

Full body digital pieces come with a simplistic background (ie. pattern, very simplified environment/effects, gradients, etc). 1. Prices!! It is completely up to the author how much you would like people to donate in exchange for your writing. There are no price minimums or maximums. Here are a couple of examples of how you could price your work for fanfiction:

Set price: $10 for a fic up to 1.5k words

Price tiers: $5 for a ficlet under 1k, $10 for a fic 1k-2k, $20 for a fic 2k-4k, etc.

Per word: $1 per 100 words (if you do this, we recommend including a max word count)

Have a glimpse into the chaos of me trying to figure out Daisy’s creature design rn (for no reason in particular…)

I gotta add more scare factors considering I like. Only focus on convenience/efficiencymso she basically looks like some normal canine 💀💀

Now, here comes some unnecessarily long image descriptions:

First Image ID: This page is made up of my efforts to design Daisy’s overall build. The top left corner shows a wolf bust with wide eyes and an open, drooling mouth. In the opposite corner is a similar situation, except the wolf’s eyes are smaller, and it’s facing forwards. At the bottom of the page is a thin wolf with longer fur in some areas than others. The ribs of large lungs are showing, she has tall domed ears, and she long legs. Besides a silhouette of an average human, the top of her head lays about 2 1/2 heads taller, around the size of a horse. Notes are amount around these drawings, those of which include:

“Humanoid = less efficient”, “Looks starved -> at least looks desperate, and therefore looks more threatening”, “build based on Wild dogs (except her kill rate is 99%, not 85%)”, “Jon is the 1% she didn’t kill” (a small rolling-eyes expression is drawn here), “Worked at institute -> Somewhat connected to The Eye -> Constant eye contact?”. Around the full-body next to the human, the following notes are written: “Long legs, fur = additional sensory input, large lungs, tall, domed ears, unblocked forwards-facing eyes, about horse size.”

Second Image ID: This page is dedicated to figuring out colors and fur patterns. Two duplicates of the previous full body are here. The first has half of it with white fur, the other half without fur and with revealed dark skin. Notes on this: “With light reflection (on the white-fur side)”, “without reflection (skin)”, “like polar bear”, “apocalypse = very little light to reflect”.

Next to this are two quick doodles, one showing glowing yellow eyes in darkness and the slightest silhouette of a canine, and the second showing someone shining a light on the creature, making the fur bright white and revealing a blood-covered creature with wide, light yellow irises. Notes on this are: “Good 4 season 5”, and, “yellow/light irises = stalking predators”. Under here is the other full body, this one also having blood on it, although it’s colors and patterns are similar to a forest wolf with more black. Notes made before this design were: “London = what camouflage?”, “Before season 5”, “forest camo? Countershading?”, “Big = hard to hide”. On this design, there are notes that include: “”Dark under eyes = scarier? Makes irises bolder”, “London has forests, so….”, “ribs = more visible due to coloration”, “pattern is similar to forest wolves with more black”, and, “countershading.”

The Basics: (or the General Info)

This blog serves to be a more creative way for me to share all of the ideas that I had planned out for the Rockers, along with some other guys, mainly following a story-esque format that follows their "backstory" and how they had originally met up to become the well known rock duo they are now!

Following up on the text above, just to clarify and put it straight, the blog will not start out with the both of them right away, and will likely follow the perspective of one or the other.

While there will be art for a bunch of the asks, especially for standard posts that are needed to progress the story, I cannot guarantee that there will be something drawn for each ask, though I do wish to try and do so. That applies to whether it's a colored sketch, actual drawing, a simple doodle, etc.

Some characters may have different names than some that may be commonly used as a fan-name from the fandom, the main case of this going to Student (name being Jamie.)

This whole blog's going to be a headcanon fest, considering how a majority of this is me making shit up for the most part, so please keep that in mind if you see different portrayals for one thing or another.

Additional Notes:

If you are running another character-based blog, it is completely alright to interact with this account! Just keep in mind that this is technically taking place in the past, which means that any asks that are sent that mention anything that could be in regards to any present matters /foreshadows anything about the Rockers will likely be ignored.

While it may not be prevalent for the long run start of this blog, I do ship the Rockers together, and would probably come up at some point very later on when the time comes, so be weary of that if you don't like the ship and such.

I made this battlefield uniform for Archie for an rp, but thought I should share it

additional doodles + notes on the design below cut

I know in the "urgent care" design looks like he has short on but no, it is, in fact, a dress. (Archie deserves to wear a pretty dress if he wants to)

both of these were (very vaguely) inspired by 1970s polish nurse uniforms and ww2 polish soldier uniforms (i'm Polish so i am legally and morally obligated to shoehorn my country lore into every piece of media i can)

Archie wears leggings/shorts underneath the dress in the "urgent care" design

i know they don't actually use gun holsters in tf2, but i thought it was a cool thing to add

i guess this is also a concept for Archie as a 10th class? He wouldn't play nearly as big of a role in battle as the other classes, but he could help out by healing temmates a little (something like a walking medkit)

i don't actually have class skills figured out so that's basically all that he can do, well, besides shoot his pistol that is

the medic bag is (unsurprisingly) a similar bad to what Polish soldiers would have used in ww2 (at least i think so, i used google images so it might not me 100% accurate, but then again this is a headcannon for a silly hat simulator so)

i think his class name would be something along the lines of "the nurse" i'm not sure tho becaue that's kinda lame /lh

he's wearing medic's gloves!! also the the colour scheme is borroed (read: directly ripped off from) BLU medic :thumbs up:

these names were inspired by the general vibe of actual cosmetic names in tf2, i intend to one day break these up into indvidual cosmetics and name them all, as these are names for the whole cosmetics bundles

In the beginning i don't know which design to choose for the rp, but i ended up picking the "field nurse" because this boys clumzy as shit and it seemed more practical (and because i think the little beret looks adorable on him). if anyone's wondering btw

the doodles below incude a mask, this was gonna be part of both versions of his uniform but i ultimately decided to not add it so the design could be more readable, i still liked it though so here's some doodles with it :3

So we're making August a combination month!

PlayChoice Game's 7th birthday is August 17th, so instead of having a birthday week, I'm including prompts for this event below and it'll run through the entire month of August.

It feels like every time he lifts a pen to paper, he’s drawing the same milky white complexion contrasted by an unearthly tan, the same pale eyes that switched from blue to green when the light hit them just right, and the same horrifyingly bleached blonde hair with long curls draping over the back of the nape.

So, Zhou stands there, staring up, nervously wringing his hands together as he critiques the recent additions he’d painted on. The hair could use some more definition; it could also look a tad more bleached. Plus, the man needs nipples, how did he even forget to add those? Zhou makes a few more mental notes of what to change for the future since he’s been working on this for too long and is starting to become ugly and muddled in his head. 

Zhou doesn’t know where this man even came from. He’s never even met anyone who even remotely looks like this (minus the Australian tv clips that Oscar’s shown him or some random guys he’s seen on Daniel’s instagram reels but that’s besides the point). 

It honestly doesn’t matter how the man came into existence, Zhou just had to embrace it at this point otherwise his art inspiration would fizzle down the drain, leaving only forced and lifeless sketches that look so ugly that he would have to replace the entire sketchbook. Plus, he only works in retail and the good mixed-media sketchbooks he likes are slightly too expensive for his liking to be continuously replaced.

(Zhou has come this close to ripping out a page from his newest sketchbook but there was such a pretty gouache doodle that he’d done on the backside he couldn’t bring himself to destroy the entire page)

The worst part of it all was his friends making fun of him for it regardless of the fact that most of them were artistically inclined. Logan has a penchant for taking jaw-dropping landscape photos while Oscar, despite being a man of fewer words, was breathtaking in the way he could put them down on paper. Liam loved music and his guitar skills were really good. Jack-, well, Zhou doesn't actually know if Jack has any artistic abilities other than the ability to draw dicks while tracking his runs on strava. And Fred, god bless Fred. The man is willing to research any niche topic or make any pose for a sketch if it means good art comes from it. 

Also, Zhou knows for a fact the others have “muses” even if they themselves dismissed the notion simply because of the fact that it wasn’t one person or thing that they always focused on like Zhou seemingly does. He knows for a fact where each of them, minus Jack and maybe Fred, draw inspiration from and yet, they still make fun of him for having a muse who doesn’t even seem to exist.

God, Zhou really just needs to sleep. He's overthinking this like usual and when he wakes up in the morning, he'll either hate it or love it. Either way, it'll give him enough motivation to actually finish the damn thing after his shift tomorrow.

At last I have gotten around to updating my shop with original art - that is, physical drawings and paintings 🙌

This first batch 1 up has lots of tribute/fanart, including several Repostober features I featured already. A large number of Yu Yu Hakusho, of course, but also some Star Ocean, Saint Seiya and Drakengard 2. And several original subjects! Some pieces even have bonus art or sketches/doodles on the back 😆 This is noted in the description and there are photos!

Batch 2 will be mostly original subject matter. I'm aiming to have that up later this month... is what I was thinking, but I may also add them here and there over the course of the next couple of days. It does seem to be a lot easier to do that every so often now that I have the first bundle up than to amass another giant wave.

As I note in the description on each listing, because these are the original drawings (not prints), they can't be replaced. Thus, the shipping method shown includes tracking. If you purchase several pieces, the additional shipping will generally be super minimal because these are flat sheets of paper! (Do note - the shikishi boards, like the ones in the first photo above with the yamadori, are flat, but rigid. They can't be rolled up so if you pick one of them plus a big piece that needs to be in a tube. The materials are all clearly labelled in the descriptions.)

What is some advice you'd offer to an artist struggling with creativity? Your compositions/sketchpages are always so interesting and full of life. How do you come up with them?

Honestly, good question LOL. I'm unfortunately struggling with creativity myself at the moment.

For the sketchbooks specifically though: They're kind of HOW I deal with this issue. Most of those drawings are observational studies or mindless doodles -- try not to think to hard about what I'm drawing, just get something out on the page. I don't plan "spreads" but I DO go back and add color, paper scraps, stickers, space filling doodles, etc. The addition of collage my fav 'low effort' way to practice composition.

Also, something important to note with any sort of sketchbook post you see online: You're only seeing the curated stuff! Every nice page is sandwiched between 4 pages of messy shit!! And that's okay!!

Veins’ Childhood Friends AU Masterpost

A collection of art, comics, and info pertaining to my Kirby series AU where King Dedede and Meta Knight first met as children, spanning from their youth growing up together all the way to present day, featuring several OCs and characters from canon who grow up alongside them. hello, some writer questions! 1) what time are the fics due on the 2nd? 2) how do we submit - pdf, gdocs access, etc 3) can we get any more info on the summaries - mostly word count max for the summary, and for author notes that might be relevant to artists if that's separate. 4) if ships are listed in their own column or whatnot, can we specify main ships vs minor ships? I don't want to mislead people but also don't want to hit on a hard no for a minor ship. thanks!!!

Fics will be due at Writer Check-in 4, which will run like the other check-ins, meaning writers will have 48 hours after the form is sent out to fill it out and submit their fic. If anyone cannot make this deadline, there is an extension available until September 8. We will put out last calls for fics in the days leading up to September 8 so that the due date does not come as a surprise. We will still accept fics after that (until December 30), but they will be automatically assigned to Doodle Tier.

The submissions will be completed using a Google Form. On the Submission form, writers will give us their own information, and then for each of their fics: - Relationships (romantic, queerplatonic, platonic, and background) - Rating of the fic - Whether or not artists need to be 18+ - Warnings (with space to elaborate and add your own notes for artists) - (Optional) Up to 10 tags* - Summary - Upload the fic as a single document. Miscrosoft Word or Google Docs is preferred. We will also accept plaintext files, markdown files, and html files.

Summaries should be 250 words or fewer, with a hard limit of 300 words (for the sake of artists who have a lot of summaries to scroll through). Here is a brief presentation with some suggested exercises to build a summary for Art Claims! Though we don't have specific requirements for the content of the summary, we recommend that summaries give a complete overview of your story i.e., you should treat it as a publisher pitch rather than an AO3 summary or teaser. This is your space to talk to the artists, so anything you want them to know about your fic should go here and/or in your tags. Warnings will have their own additional space.

Ships will have their own section!! On the Art Claims site, artists will have the option to sort summaries by Art Tier or by relationship. Your summary will appear under each of the major relationships present in your fic (romantic, queerplatonic, and platonic). You will also be able to list any background relationships that are present, but your summary will not appear under the sections of the site dedicated to those relationships.

*Tags: The optional 10 tags are for Art Claims only. For posting, you may tag your fic however you would like. You might want to think of the Art Claims tags as an "at a glance" overview of your story. You might use the tags to highlight major aspects of your fic, or to clarify things that might not be clear from your summary. You do not need to include relationships, characters, or warnings in these tags.

One Full Body Sprite for Mother and Father.

I thought I'd have more time to add some alternate poses and expressions but I don't know if I'll be able to anytime soon, so here's another update! I also included the initial doodle when I started solidifying their heights cause they're so adorable!

Some notes:

Father loves to change his coat pattern and gloves. For a TWEWY game sprite if he has freedom, he would annoyingly have sprites for each combination of gloves/socks (7) plus 3 variations of coat patterns. And maybe some variations of the faded jeggings pattern. Maybe some sparkles from his hair tie. Since the sprites don't move in game, if he's in the UG and he's "allowed" to change his patterns, then probably every time he changes poses or has a new line of dialogue, his coat pattern & rainbow pattern will cycle to the next one.

If he's not allowed to (ex: the RG, staying low-key in the UG) and still want to mess with people, then he'll be more sneaky and each time his sprite goes off screen and comes back, then it will be on the next pattern. In addition, his glove pattern will cycle to the next one each time it comes out of his coat pockets.

In free floating spaces, it's usually natural to float to eye level of other human like forms. He tends to adjust his floating height a little more than others. He is, perhaps, slightly sensitive about his height, but he won't show it, and while he could wear shoes that make him taller, these sneaker sandals are comfy! Comfort is important! He could probably make himself physically taller but...he doesn't. For some reason.

Mother loathes being in the lower planes like the RG, because she can't let her jacket float freely off her shoulders unless it's a windy day. In the UG she can get away with a little bit of it. So to resist the urge, she'll wear her coat in the RG.

Even though her suit jacket isn't her wings, she treats it like it is, so even though she likes the feeling of the rest of her dressy outfit, she doesn't like wearing her suit jacket because she feels bounded and restricted.

Maybe someone will suggest she can carry the suit jacket in her arms. She would probably still make it blow in the (maybe non-existent) wind slightly, but at least it wouldn't feel restrictive.

For floating jacket sprites, they would probably be dramatic with her poses. I don't think they'd change as much as Father's clothing patterns do, but maybe they do too. I don't want them to be too distracting...but...perhaps that's ok for her.
