“You know Pretty Boy likes you, don’t you?”

Spencer had been trying to get some sleep on the flight back after working a case that had drained all his energy when the sound of Morgan’s voice caught his attention. Without opening his eyes, he knew exactly who he was talking to. Spencer had never outright admitted to anyone that he had developed feelings for you but it was getting harder to deny. Once Derek had started pointing out the way he’d look up when you entered a room or the way his eyes lingered as you walked away, he was becoming concerned that this crush was more obvious than he’d like it to be.

He’s been trying to ignore it, telling himself it’s unprofessional when really it’s because he believes there’s no way you could possibly feel the same. There’s a myriad of reasons why he wished Derek would keep his big mouth shut but honestly – that was probably the biggest.

“Likes me? How old are we?” The smooth sound of your response makes Spencer smile to himself in spite of the current situation.

“(Y/N), come on…” Derek chuckles and is immediately met with a long stretch of silence. Spencer can picture the death glare he knows he’d see on your face if he were to look at you in this moment. “Look, you know he’s never gonna ask you out himself so maybe you should just–”

“Derek.” You interrupt with an evident sternness in your tone. “I’m not having this conversation with you. I’ve told you, it’s not happening.” Ouch. Spencer had never allowed himself to dream that you would reciprocate his feelings but he definitely wishes he had been asleep for that one. With that, he forces his eyes shut tighter than before and takes in one deep, slightly shaky breath and decides to try to go back to sleep, if only so that he doesn’t have to hear you reject him even harder.

Spencer wakes up as the jet is landing and he quickly gathers all of his things, walking out and across the strip with much more urgency than usual. This detail doesn’t go unnoticed by you, not much does – especially where Spencer is concerned – and you make a mental note to check in with him later. He had caught your eye the first day you met him which must be, what? Half a year ago now? And he had been on your mind ever since. You had bonded quickly as friends, being the two youngest members on the team. About a month ago you had finally allowed yourself to acknowledge the fact that you had developed feelings for him. You’d sit next to him at any given opportunity, listen to his infamously long rants much longer than anyone else would, spend just a little too long staring at his lips as he talked you through his theories. It didn’t take long for people to notice. Elle had her suspicions, JJ made a comment every now and then, but Derek – he wouldn’t let it go. He teases you about it constantly. You haven’t given him the satisfaction of admitting it, you haven’t been able to deny it either.

When you eventually make your way into the building along with the rest of the team you notice that Spencer had already left. It’s only then you start to be concerned. It’s unlike him to leave in such a hurry, even more so to not even say goodbye. You rack your brain trying to come up for a reason for this strange behavior. Is he sick? Upset about something? Was it you? You begin to go over every interaction you’d had with him recently when you have to stop yourself before you spiral. He’s just tired. If it was serious he’d tell you… right?

The next morning you walk in to find Spencer at his desk working on the report he didn’t write last night before he had basically ran away.

“Morning, Spence!” You greet him, making an effort to sound cheerful as you lean on his desk. He doesn’t look up, like he’s trying extra hard to look busy.

“Morning, (Y/L/N).” He replies without looking up. His tone seems normal, his use of your last name is what sounds the alarms in your head.

“Hey… are you feeling alright?” You ask tentatively, not wanting to pry too much in case you really had done something wrong that you clearly weren’t aware of. “I noticed you kind of left in a hurry last night.” He finally looks up and meets your eyes, easing your nerves slightly. His eyes shift away and then back to yours before a soft smile graces his lips, one that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.

“I’m okay.” He responds after a while in a way that sounds like that’s not all he wants to say. You go to reassure him, make sure he knows he can tell you anything, but stop yourself when you notice the way he tenses when you place a hand on his shoulder. Retracting your hand quickly, you begin to fidget with your fingers before running them through your hair nervously.

“Spencer… I–” You start and stop and Spencer feels a little guilty as you seem to stumble over your words anxiously. “Is it me? Did I do something? Because if I did I–”.

“(Y/N).” Spencer cuts off your panicked rambling. You take a steadying breath as he slowly rises to stand in front of you, your eyes trailing up when he towers over you. He looks around the room and sighs before focusing back on you. “Can we go somewhere to talk?” You nod and begin walking towards a storage room with Spencer following close behind, quickly checking that there's no one in there before stepping inside.

“What’s going on with you?” You break the silence as Spencer closes the door behind him. “You know you can talk to me about anything.”

“I’m sorry if I’ve been acting weird.” You notice the way he dodges the question. He can’t meet your eyes anymore, his gaze shifts around the room and he smiles awkwardly at you.

“Spence, that’s not–” You interrupt yourself, trying to find a way to put your thoughts to words without overwhelming him. “I only want you to be okay. You’ve been acting differently since last night… If there’s something going on I want to be there for you.” When you say that he smiles sadly. He looks down in thought as if he’s considering something.

“I heard you talking to Morgan…” He mumbles, still staring at his feet – wringing his hands together. You furrow your brows in confusion. Talking to Morgan? “On the jet on the way home…”

“Oh.” This isn’t happening. You figure you should’ve known Derek’s relentless teasing would be your downfall. He must know you like him now. There’s a reason you never wanted him to know how you felt. You couldn’t stand the thought of anything ruining your friendship. Spencer visibly deflates even more in front of you at your lack of response. You begin scrambling to come up with a way to get out of this horrifically embarrassing situation.

“Look, I– I didn’t mean to make this awkward…” Oh god. The way he’s stuttering and tripping over his words. You stare blankly at him, then duck your head, bracing for the impact of his rejection. “It’s not like I thought you would feel the same way I just–” Wait what? Your head snaps back up to see his face, eyes widened, which seems to startle him a little. “I wasn’t going to say anything but I guess I just got really in my head about it.” He begins to look a little panicked. “I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable, I’m sorry if I did.” You just keep staring up at him, mouth agape in disbelief. “(Y/N)?” He says your name with a sad desperation and it reminds you that you should respond.

“Sorry, I–” You say slowly while shaking your head. “Are you saying that – Do you like me?” Now it’s Spencer’s turn to look confused, but it was all starting to make sense to you. You had thought he was acting weird because he had found out about your feelings, when in reality, it was the other way around.

“Yes?” He replies hesitantly.

“I like you too.” You say simply with a shy smile but Spencer looks completely taken aback.

“You do?” The way his eyes light up with a subtle excitement was adorable. Soon after, that look was replaced with skepticism. “But I thought�� you told Morgan you didn’t like me.”

“I told Morgan to stop teasing me about you because I didn’t think this…” You gesture between the two of you. “Was ever going to happen.” Spencer let out a sigh of relief and smiled bashfully.

“You could have just told me.” You feel his eyes scanning your face as if he were still looking for proof that you weren’t messing with him.

“You didn’t tell me either.”

“I thought there was no way…” You make eye contact as he trails off in thought. “I guess it doesn’t matter now.” Spencer takes a tentative step closer to you but doesn’t move to touch you in any way, so you reach out to take his hands in yours, lacing your fingers together.

“Well… maybe if we don’t have to fly out for a case today, we could go to dinner tonight?” You’re staring down at your intertwined hands, squeezing once before looking back up. When you see his face he’s still looking down with a big dopey grin on his face and you can’t help but smile right back.

“Yes— definitely.” You giggle at his obvious enthusiasm.

You both stay in the storage room for another couple minutes, mostly just staring starry eyed at each other. Eventually you both decide that you should get back to work. You try to hide whatever was now going between you as much as you can but like always, Derek Morgan figures you out within minutes and he, along with the rest of the team, teases you relentlessly. (You wouldn’t have it any other way.)

i understand no mental illnesses have been tied to any gene, but my understanding was that there is some evidence on heritability in some cases i.e. for ADHD “many genetic…risks…have a small effect” (doi:10.1016/j.neubiorev.2021.01.022); how are we to understand such findings through a antipsych lens?

okay I just want to be clear because I think a lot of you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what people mean when we self id as 'antipsych.' it's not that 'antipsych' is some sort of pie-in-the-sky theory that I pre-committed to and now have to reconcile with the medical literature—it's more like, I grew up as a very I Fucking Love Science Dot Com child, got interested in psychology among other things, started reading both popular and medical literature about it, started to notice that the things I was reading about psychology and mental diseases didn't really line up with the things I and people I knew experienced and heard when actually interacting with doctors and psychologists, and finally and only around about the age of 19 did I become aware that 'antipsych' is in fact a legitimate position that other people had come up with before me, and at that point I started to read things that you might be referring to here as being written 'through an antipsych lens.'

so, when I hear a question like this, ie one that presumes there is some contradiction between anti-psychiatric political commitments and the existing psychiatric literature, it suggests to me that you haven't really read the literature in question—where by 'read' I mean you need to actually look at the paper's methodology, and look at the process of knowledge-making that yields a sentence like "ADHD has genetic etiology." that's an empirical claim. evaluating whether it's true necessarily involves asking what evidence the person making the claim is offering. there are specific skills and strategies for doing this when you are a layperson dealing with specialised scientific literature; there is also a fundamental critical attitude you should adopt with regards to literally any claim, argument, discourse, article, etc.

it is always a good thing to recognise when you're in over your head and need help or further reading to understand a statistical method, piece of jargon, etc. but you do kind of have to, like, approach the issue with a fundamental attitude that just because someone said something in a scientific journal doesn't make it beyond reproach! read the claims, read the evidence, ask yourself if it makes sense. this isn't some rhetorical game of "I'm going to prove antipsych right"—the 'antipsych' is the loose umbrella term you are called when you actually read the psychiatric literature and critique the discipline's fundamental epistemological failures and disciplinary raison d'être. the horse draws the cart!

wrt 'genetic causes of psychiatric diseases' you also need to understand that many of you are tilting at windmills. I've never said genes don't have an effect on our affective and emotional lives. plainly, they do. this is not the same as "there is a distinct specific Pathology expressed in these genes; they are diseased and/or defective and this is why you feel miserable / cannot function / cannot go to work." like, we see these are two different statements, yes? if all we mean by ADHD is "a list of general behavioural dispositions" then yeah, of course those have genetic influences in addition to environmental ones. everything about us does. that does not mean that ADHD, the distinct and discrete clinical entity that psychiatrists presume exists (on the grounds of their patients having xyz problems), is indeed a 'genetic condition' or instantiates as a genetic mutation / malformation / differential expression / etc. this paragraph is foreshadowing.

having looked at the genetics section of this particular study for about 20 minutes (open-access here if you don't feel like searching by DOI), here are some things that immediately caught my attention:

this is just a meta-analysis of ADHD research. its claims are only as good as the underlying studies. a meta-analysis of shitty studies that had bad methodology will not 'even out' their respective badness, it will just produce a shitty meta-analysis that is intrinsically hampered by the bad underlying methodology. I've discussed this here.

the very first assertion under the genetics section cites three twin studies; I followed those links. first of all, these are written for other scientists, so they don't make a particularly clear (to lay people) distinction between the scientific notion of 'heritability' and what this term is typically interpreted to mean in popular discourses. so, to be clear, 'heritability' is an estimate of how much a given trait is caused by genetic factors at a population level. it does not tell you anything about how much an individual's expression of that trait is genetically caused, nor does heritability necessarily indicate the genetic cause is direct or dependent on one (or even a small number of) genes.

indeed, all three of these studies, and the overarching meta-analysis, assert that this genetic etiology is due to a very large number of very small genetic influences. this is not inherently scientifically unsound, but it does raise my eyebrows. how would we distinguish between a distinct pathology that is caused by a huge tangle of very low-impact genes, vs a whole bunch of behaviours that are socially stigmatised and grouped together on political grounds, and that also have some relationship to genetics, as does literally every physiological fact of human existence?

these cite twin studies, meaning basically they try to use comparisons between genetically identical twins and various other familial relationships to determine how much of a given characteristic is genetically caused. again, though, this is essentially boiling down to the observation that closely genetically related people have similar personality traits; also, twin studies in general have serious methodological problems with profound implications for the invocation of genetics in psychiatry.

in fact, the meta-analysis here also claims that ADHD can sometimes be due to "rare single gene defects" or chromosomal abnormalities. the study cited on the gene claim, for example, is also cited in the claim above, so I've already looked at it. the methodology here is to look at prevalence of ADHD among populations with certain known genetic conditions—that's it. now can we think of any other reasons why people diagnosed with one thing might also be diagnosed with another? for example, they're already in contact with the medical system. they have enough financial resources to seek diagnoses. symptoms of chronic pain & illness often manifest with attention disturbances. etc.

even if that were better founded, the claim they're making themselves here is that ADHD in fact has numerous genetic causes, all manifesting as the same behaviours and psychological disturbances. it's almost like those manifestations are not a single distinct pathology, but a group of 'signs' the clinician lumps together into a single diagnostic box regardless of whence they arise. hold that thought.

incidentally, that study also notes that initial heritability estimates for ADHD were much lower than what's cited now, and blames this on inaccurate self-assessment results, claiming the more recent studies using parent and teacher assessments of ADHD children are more accurate. of course, the actual diagnostic measure never became less 'subjective.' it's just that we trust it more if it's a parent reporting that their kids are all super ADHD than if it's the kid actually reporting their own experiences. because there certainly aren't any historical reasons why parents have felt the need to cling to the notion of a neurobiological, genetically determined distinct ADHD pathology!

similarly, numerous of these linked studies say that 'sub-threshold ADHD' (read: the behaviours considered to be ADHD symptoms, but at lower severity than clinicians have considered diagnosable) show the same genetic causal links—heritability. now that's also curious, no? almost like ADHD is not a discrete distinct genetically caused pathology, but a bunch of traits and behaviours that, like literally every human characteristic, have some genetic as well as environmental influence, and that are artificially grouped together under psychiatric taxa and presumed to be due to an underlying physical (genetic) defect.

indeed, what I'm laying out here is just the basic circularity that underlies all psychiatric diagnosis: we know you are X because you do Y, which you do because you are X, which we know because you showed up to the clinic and told us you do Y. I unpacked this logic in more detail here.

finally, and this bears pulling out from the list because it's important, multiple of these studies are claiming that they have identified general genetic risk factors for a broad variety of psychopathologies (example here). in other words, the claim is not even really that ADHD has specific genetic causes, but that some as-yet-unspecified genetic factor/s are generally responsible for what are diagnosed as mental diseases. how do we know that unspecified higher-order genetic factor exists? well, we don't. but we assume it's there. the same way we did for the 'general intelligence factor,' g, which by the way is entirely racist nonsense.

you may notice that basically all I've said here amounts to accusing psychiatry of failing to meet basic standards of empirical proof generally considered to be load-bearing elements of the 'scientific method.' this is not even really an 'antipsych' argument—it's, at best, a critique of psychiatry as it currently exists, using (in a locally uncritical way!) established standards of scientific discourse. I'm pointing this out both because it's an extremely valuable habit to get into yourself, and because I once again would love it if more people understood that 'antipsych' isn't really a prior theoretical commitment most of us just stumble into. it's a position we actively have to seek out, and often, what prompts us to begin doing that is precisely the experience of noticing problems like the above, and the corresponding utter failure of the psychiatric discipline to rectify such problems without nullifying its own epistemological foundations.

CASS! YOUR BRAIN! IT'S SO... HUGE!!!!Okay, okay. So, to recap what you have confirmed to us-

The robot that we see is NOT controlled by Donnie's spirit. We see that Donnie is able to control it via headset, etc.

Also, the reason this "Plan B" did NOT work is because Casey got possessed by Don's Hamato spirit in a memory from the future on accident.

It was going to work. He was literally mid-crawl before Casey swooped in and tried to help him but ended up somehow bringing his spirit into the past and cloning him a new body with plot serum.

We don't know if this robot would have worked. We don't know if Donnie even had enough equipment to make a robot body like the one he made for Raph. Maybe it would have failed. Maybe everything would've been okay. I just don't know.

But that's the beauty of this series. You planned this since you first decided how Donnie was going to die. Yes, you've said that you're kind of as clueless as we are at times when it comes to "what's next." But the amount of detail you put into this is ASTOUNDING!

Even with your VERY FIRST COMIC, you used Don's failed experiment with Leo and turned it into another chapter where we found out that Donnie was trying to find a cure for Mikey's peepawed body!!!

The fact that Donnie not only didn't say anything before he died because you knew that it "wasn't the end for him," but he also had a plan B that he didn't tell anybody about hence the guilty faces, the reasurrences, and ignoring Leo's "we don't need to worry" talks. And he couldn't simply tell them that "everything was gonna be okay" because his plan possibly wouldn't even work!!!

AND THAT'S WHY HE HAD A BREAKDOWN WHEN HE LOOKED BACK AT ALL THE RECORDINGS OF THE RESISTANCE FAILING BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS HE WATCHING EVERYONE HE TRIED TO PROTECT WITH EVERYTHING HE HAD DIE BEFORE HIS EYES, BUT HE ALSO REALIZED THAT HE FAILED THEM AND LEFT THEM WITH NOTHING!!! HE FEELS SO USELESS AND GUILTY FOR SOMETHING HE HAD NO CONTROL OVER!!!!

Even since we first met Raph, we got Don's theory about how storing spirits into mechs worked. He probably used the rest of their most valuable resources to even BUILD that thing.

I don't know if when they all realize that Casey is actually the reason Mikey couldn't sense any of their spirits because he snatched them up and brought them to the past/different timeline that they're either gonna feel angry or like "Oh!....oh." You know?

It seems to me that they still don't know the answer to that question. With all of them back, I thought they would have by now, but I guess we'll see pretty soon.

A lot of things could happen in this chapter. Good things, bad things, it's quite a toss-up. Let's just hope this whole big misunderstanding comes to a big finish soon. Donnie deserves a comeback. Everyone deserves to have a breather where they can all just...talk. Cause' by GOD there is a lot to talk about. I know they had some downtime before Miwa showed up, but Donnie's still working. If Donnie doesn't finally open up to his family by the end of this, I'm bringing out the beach balls, I swear.

Arlecchino's line about Childe intrigues me, actually.

If you played Labyrinth Warriors you know he does not do that.

He voiced the absolutely worst theory about Shiki Taishou twice, got called out on that by both Xinyan and Paimon and got offended, saying he needed to consider all possible scenarios.

He does consider that Pulcinella is lying to him (both in his line about him and in Arlecchino's quest) and is extremely casual about it (so this thought is not a shock to him, he clearly has mulled it over).

At the same time when he was left alone in the domain he kept gathering Shiki Taishou's copies to help him get stronger. And he trusts Pulcinella with his family.

He just... acts like two opposite things are true at once. Or maybe does the thing that would give him the best result if any of the two things were true.

(there's also a possibility that he's playing a harmless fool. it's not as interesting but he did do that with Zhongli)

It reminds me of Canotila's book, where a dog was a dog and a rifthound at the same time. I think Skirk trained our boy to work with situations like that.

I'm almost sure Arle misunderstands this about him. And it's fascinating because she's the Fatui spymaster and she's extremely good at reading people... She also has some experience with that two superimposed worlds thing the lore is hinting at, and hiding obvious truths in plain sight.

So I wonder whether she has actually picked up on his idealism and desire for the better version to be true (yes, he considers even the worst ones but has a preference and it makes him falter every time) or did her youngest and the most naive colleague fool her.

And I think it's the latter.

This makes me want to see Childe and Yae interact. I mean, yes, Yae eats boys like that for breakfast, and yes, he will look like an absolute idiot around her.

But would she guess that.

The Princess of Dorne: Why Theories Predicated On Arianne Wanting Queenship Above All Are BS

I'm not whacking anyone I'm just saying. Please return to the text.

"Our clothes make us different people. I would sooner be flesh and blood than silks and jewels, and you…you are not your white cloak, ser.”

There is this attitude about Arianne in fandom that drives me nutso. It is the idea that she is somehow nothing but a vain party girl, and that her ultimate ending will be to die in a fiery doom with Aegon because she is a vapid, silly girl who will reach too far in her ambitions. I am here to tell you two things.

That is not at all how Arianne acts in canon. You are falling for the front she puts on and nothing more.

Arianne does not want to be Queen.

I started with the above quote to illustrate my ultimate point - Arianne is not nearly as vain as people make her out to be. Much like many women in this series - Cersei, Sansa, Margaery, and Daenerys - Arianne uses silks and jewels as weapons because that is the world she was born into. This does not make her sillier or more stupid than any of these women; in fact, she shows a remarkable amount of empathy even in her worst moments. She is intelligent, and driven, and yes ambitious but what is seen as a good thing in a white woman like Margaery is seen as a negative in a brown woman like Arianne. I think there's a misunderstanding of her desires, due to her interesting role as a pov that is also an heiress. Let's dig in.

“I will not say that you are wrong.” His voice was hoarse. “Will not? Cannot! Myrcella is more fit for rule …” “A son comes before a daughter.” “Why? What god has made it so? I am my father’s heir. Should I give up my rights to my brothers?”

This conversation between Arys Oakheart and Arianne in the shadow city is the first time Arianne lets us in on what she's thinking. If you notice - she is hyperfocused on the idea of being her father's heir and denied her right to inherit Sunspear and Dorne. And of course that's what she's focused on. Crowning Myrcella is merely a means to an end. What she wants is Sunspear, what she wants is to be Princess of Done - what she wants most of all is her father's respect. If she has an ally as Queen, and forces the realm to accept women in ruling positions, she secures her own role as a ruling princess of Dorne (or so she thinks).

"Would you let your daughter be despoiled of her rights and locked away in prison?"

I believe there's a misunderstanding of her motives because people ascribe to her what other ambitious women want, which is to be Queen. But Arianne is not like these other women. Arianne is supposed to inherit in her own right. Arianne has her own title that she's after, her own ancestral seat to rule from, and that is emotionally much more important to her than any marriage, than any other title. Tyrion doesn't dream of being Hand so much as he dreams of being his father's heir. Stannis' longing centers a lot more around what he feels is a denial of a relationship by Robert when Robert gives Storm's End, their father's seat, to Renly. And look to the other heiress in the series, Dany. Why does Dany want the Iron Throne? Because her father sat it. Because Rhaegar fought and died for it. It's not to say that she would say no to being Queen - it's just that it's not her goal, it's not her ambition, it's not what she's planning to do. The idea of Arianne as queen isn't even introduced to us until her last chapter - before that her focus is on Dorne.

“You do not know my father. I have been disappointing him since I first arrived in this world without a cock. Half a dozen times he has tried to marry me to toothless greybeards, each more contemptible than the last. He never commanded me to wed them, I grant you, but the offers alone prove how little he regards me.” “Even so, you are his heir.” “Am I?” “He left you to rule in Sunspear when he took himself off to his Water Gardens, did he not?” “To rule? No. He left his cousin Ser Manfrey as castellan, old blind Ricasso as seneschal, his bailiffs to collect duties and taxes for his treasurer Alyse Ladybright to count, his shariffs to police the shadow city, his justiciars to sit in judgment, and Maester Myles to deal with any letters not requiring the prince’s own attention. Above them all he placed the Red Viper. My charge was feasts and frolics, and the entertainment of distinguished guests. Oberyn would visit the Water Gardens twice a fortnight. Me, he summoned twice a year. I am not the heir my father wants, he has made that plain. Our laws constrain him, but he would sooner have my brother follow him, I know it.”

Notice - her ire towards Quentyn and Doran is founded in the idea that they mean to set her aside. This isn't a theory she just came upon - she found a very suspicious letter that seemed to imply so-

When I went to blow it out, I found a letter lying incomplete beside it, a letter to my brother Quentyn, off at Yronwood. My father told Quentyn that he must do all that his maester and his master-at-arms required of him, because ‘one day you will sit where I sit and rule all Dorne, and a ruler must be strong of mind and body.’” A tear crept down Arianne’s soft cheek. “My father’s words, written in his own hand. They burned themselves into my memory. I cried myself to sleep that night, and many nights thereafter.”

Her anger at Quentyn is often used as a way to whack her. She's juvenile, she's silly, she's paranoid. But how do you say to a supposedly misogynistic father who is regularly attempting to marry you off to old men below your station that you believe he is trying to usurp you? How do you bring this up? I don't think she's wrong to come to this conclusion, nor do I think she's wrong to lash out at Doran over it. And what's more is that neither does Doran believe she is wrong to lash out at him. He apolgoizes to her.

If she can be set aside so easily, then every woman in Dorne can be set aside just as easily. Arys notes she's trembling when she speaks to him- she really does believe her father means to set her aside, and that is a deep, personal, horrible betrayal. And all of this, all of this fear, is centered around Doran and Dorne and Sunspear. Like Tyrion, like Jon Snow, like Daenerys, like the Dance era Targaryens she mentions in Rhaenyra and Aegon II, she is interested in inheriting the seat of her Father because it represents acceptance by her Father, because it represents her Father's love.

"Anders Yronwood is Criston Cole reborn. He whispers in my brother’s ear that he should rule after my father, that it is not right for men to kneel to women…that Arianne especially is unfit to rule, being the willful wanton that she is.”

She wants Dorne. She wants her father's seat. She wants her father's love. She does not want that spiky chair, nor does she dream of being Queen. She doesn't even dream about being in King's Landing! Sure she tempts Arys with dreams about them being free to be together, but in her chapters, she's not dreaming about being with him, she is dreaming about her inheritance which is....Dorne. She's not subtle about it, she says it plainly!

Do you see the white one, Quentyn? That is Nymeria's star, burning bright, and that milky band behind her, those are ten thousand ships. She burned as bright as any man, and so shall I. You will not rob me of my birthright!

That, and my birthright. I want Sunspear, and my father's seat. I want Dorne.

And back to this idea that Arianne is silly and unserious - again, it's a defense. Just as her romantic notions to Arys are merely a front to convince him to do what she wants, Arianne speaks breezily but throughout her chapters is in fact very serious and anxious. She knows what she's doing is dangerous, and tries to keep everything on track. And while certainly her plan is foolhardy....is it any worse than Doran's plans to send Quentyn on a wild chase after Dany? It's not as if she isn't somewhat prepared - she has her own spies, loyal to her from the orphans of the Greenblood. Nor does she act particularly rashly when she knows she's beaten - it's Arys Oakheart who charges, over the objections of everyone there including Arianne. Again, I'm not saying its a good plan but I am saying it's not all that much worse than half the plots in this series, and she is not stupid or foolish when it comes to actually enacting it.

And she's compassionate. She is sweet to Myrcella from the jump, she calls Arys "my white knight" after he dies, she argues for her friends to be given leniancy. And, of course, again, she says-

Come morning all of this will vanish, the princess told herself, but when morning came, she was still in her cell, Ser Arys was still dead, and Myrcella . . . I never wanted that, never. I meant the girl no harm. All I wanted was for her to be a queen. If we had not been betrayed . . .

was for MYRCELLA to be Queen.

And how do her feelings change when her father finally lets her in on his plans?

Standing was an act of love. Standing was an act of faith. He believes in me. I will not fail him.

My father fears the same. “If not, though… if this truly is Jon Connington, if the boy is Rhaegar’s son…” “Are you hoping that he is, or that he’s not?” “I… it would give great joy to my father if Elia’s son were still alive. He loved his sister well.” “It was you I asked about, not your father.” So it was. “I was seven when Elia died. They say I held her daughter Rhaenys once, when I was too young to remember. Aegon will be a stranger to me, whether true or false.” The princess paused. “We looked for Rhaegar’s sister, not his son.” Her father had confided in Ser Daemon when he chose him as his daughter’s shield; with him at least she could speak freely. “I would sooner it were Quentyn who’d returned.” “Or so you say,” said Daemon Sand. “Good night, princess.” He bowed to her, and left her standing there. What did he mean by that? Arianne watched him walk away. What sort of sister would I be, if I did not want my brother back? It was true, she had resented Quentyn for all those years that she had thought their father meant to name him as his heir in place of her, but that had turned out to be just a misunderstanding. She was the heir to Dorne, she had her father’s word on that. Quentyn would have his dragon queen, Daenerys.

Oh look!!!! Her thoughts are still preoccupied with DORNE and HER FATHER.

Oftentimes, her resentment of Quentyn is used against her, to show she's still silly, to show she's going to do something risky and elope with Aegon VI. And while yes, she is very preoccupied with Quentyn, the entire two chapters are about her wanting to love Quentyn again. Not for his sake, but for her father's. She's spent years believing they are going to usurp her; now she has to reckon with the fat that she was wrong, and she still barely knows who Quentyn is, truly. She is constantly reflecting on him, on her relationship with him, on who he might be. Yes, it is a bit foreboding but I don't believe it's a sure thing that she feels weird about Quentyn because she wants to one up him - she's spent her whole life thinking he would one up her and now she's reeling.

What would a maid that age want with her dull, bookish brother? Young girls dreamed of dashing knights with wicked smiles, not solemn boys who always did their duty. She will want Dorne, though. If she hopes to sit the Iron Throne, she must have Sunspear. If Quentyn was the price for that, this dragon queen would pay it. What if she was at Griffin’s End with Connington, and all this about another Targaryen was just some sort of subtle ruse? Her brother could well be with her. King Quentyn. Will I need to kneel to him? No good would come of wondering about it. Quentyn would be king or he would not. I pray Daenerys treats him him more gently than she did her own brother.

And even through all this turmoil, another point in ARianne's favor is, once again, she is not silly or frivilous. It's a shield! Another thing used against her is her taste in men but never, not once is Arianne played by a pretty face. She does not trust Darkstar, she enlists his help because of his abilities in a fight, but she knows he is angry and violent! She isn't played by him, she is actively attempting to use him!! Just because she acknowledges he is handsome, doesn't mean she's fooled!

Arianne watched him warily. He is highborn enough to make a worthy consort, she thought. Father would question my good sense, but our children would be as beautiful as dragonlords. If there was a handsomer man in Dorne, she did not know him. Ser Gerold Dayne had an aquiline nose, high cheekbones, a strong jaw. He kept his face clean-shaven, but his thick hair fell to his collar like a silver glacier, divided by a streak of midnight black. He has a cruel mouth, though, and a crueler tongue. His eyes seemed black as he sat outlined against the dying sun, sharpening his steel, but she had looked at them from a closer vantage and she knew that they were purple. Dark purple. Dark and angry.

And on that point, she doesn't trust Lysono either!

Lysono Maar spoke the Common Tongue very well. “I have the honor to be the eyes and ears of the Golden Company, princess.” “You look…” She hesitated. “…like a woman?” He laughed. “That I am not.” “…like a Targaryen,” Arianne insisted. His eyes were a pale lilac, his hair a waterfall of white and gold. All the same, something about him made her skin crawl. Was this what Viserys looked like? she found herself wondering. If so perhaps it is a good thing he is dead. Lysono Maar spoke the Common Tongue very well. “I have the honor to be the eyes and ears of the Golden Company, princess.” “You look…” She hesitated. “…like a woman?” He laughed. “That I am not.” “…like a Targaryen,” Arianne insisted. In fact, Arianne is uncomfortably with her youthful infatuations with bad boys-

"And what did you do, princess?" asked Spotted Sylva. I sat beside the well and pretended that some robber knight had brought me here to have his way with me, she thought, a tall hard man with black eyes and a widow's peak. The memory made her uneasy.

She seduces Arys with the express purpose of using him - she thinks as much in her fight with Doran, when she mentions it took her six months to seduce Arys. She gets playful with Daemon, but a) it does not make her stupid to simply desire to have sex with someone, and we know she uses birth control and b) when he rejects her, she cuts the shit and remains on track.

All of this to say - Arianne thinks through her plots, even if she is not the best at them. Her resentment of Quentyn and her father are not just very well founded in a very rational sort of paranoia, but her own father directly absolves her of any blame because it wasn't Arianne that was in the wrong. She stays on track, she isn't silly, and most of all, she does not want to be Queen. She wants to be Princess of Dorne. She wants to be her father's heir, and she wants Doran to believe her a worthy heir. This is why I believe in the idea that Aegon will elope with Elia and not Arianne - Arianne wants to be a Queenmaker not Queen herself. She will be met with an opportunity to have a queenmaking plot that is a little more put together and that will be her moral test - not whether she will choose to be queen herself.

This one is a long one. I wanted to do all of the requests and didn't want to make separate posts for each one, so here's all of them in one post!

Cole and Geo meeting for the first time.

I'm actually writing and posting a fic on AO3 and FFN about them. I've only posted 2 chapters, and I'm slowly working on the third one, but I have a concept of them meeting, even if it's sloppy. This is technically how they meet, but they don't introduce themselves until halfway through the second chapter... I think, where Cole wakes up being held hostage in the kitchen.

Basically, while looking for his friends after being thrown into a foreign land, Cole sees the Hoarder and goes that way in case his friends are being attacked. He sees someone around that area, attacks the Hoarder, and is quickly knocked out by garbage falling onto him, which causes a split in his head. Geo was the person he had seen, and he quickly took the ninja back to the Rookery to take care of his injuries, even if he didn't quite know how to do all that.

Here's the fic if anyone's curious.

I headcanon that Fritz and Spitz are 4-5 years old by the time Cole joins the Finders. When the boys were found by Geo, they were around 2-3, so they've been with him for a couple of years. I don't have any set backgrounds for them, but they're banished to the Land of Lost Things at the same time and find each other before Geo does. I believe Spitz is the more excitable of the two, more silly, while Fritz is more shy, more careful. Fritz was able to speak more clearly when Geo and him meet and is able to introduce himself. Spitz copied his name, not able to remember his own before he found himself here.

(I'm actually really happy with how Spitz came out here. I don't know how to draw animals, nevermind snakes, so him looking kind of cute here is a relief.)

Discovering Cole's rock form.

Okay, this one is more... complicated, I think. In my head, they found Cole's rock form by a sudden wave of emotion, being Geo's heat of the moment kiss. Before this, Cole hadn't been able to control the earth very much at all, barely able to feel the power in his gut. He's only able to feel the pain of the earth. But when Geo kisses him and accidentally uses his own element during this, he's suddenly overwhelmed with the feeling of the earth. (This also leads to the misunderstanding in canon, where Geo feels as if he's only wanted because of the misconstrued theory Cole runs with.)

This one happens after they're able to get to Ninjago, and there's some semblance of peace. Geo hasn't seen the stars in so long, barely even remembers them, so he gets very excited when he sees them and starts pointing out the few constellations he can remember. Cole's too distracted, looking at the brightest star of them all. At this point, Cole's gotten Geo some new clothes, they're just very similar to his old ones because Geo had really liked his look.

Okay I roughly cleaned this up so probably incoherent at points, but copying and pasting right to ya.

Read more fanfic with budding in it, but because theyre usually robot yaoi, that asexually produced sparkling doesn't stay asexually produced for long. Seems like in that case the carrier genes are really dominant but some sire traits come through, especially with more "donations".

In this case, I don't know what path would be more entertaining. Orion pops out a sparkling that looks almost exactly like him, or at some point during the carrying he and Dee interface and that sparkling comes out looking exactly like a 100% pure DPax love child making everyone wonder if Dee's genetics are just so strong it beat out the (non-existent) other sire or if this whole thing was a misunderstanding (true, but not in the way they think) and Dee and Orion somehow interfaced in the very beginning but both somehow forgot??? Fun little conspiracy theory time for everyone to scratch their heads over.

Also, as fun as it is to explore the stations of canon in different ways, it'd be very interesting if Jazz and Prowl, our little investigators, are the ones who somehow stumble across perhaps not the entire truth while looking into who the perp who hurt Orion is but just some of the incredibly sketchy things going on in the broken system Sentinel's created.

Orion's usually the one getting into places he's not supposed to, but he's hyperfocused on finding any scrap of info on the Matrix he can find. JazzProwl? They're on the hunt for a cogged perp that hurt Orion. They're paying way more attention to the cogged bots than they ever have before and are coming across so much crime. So much. How is there so much???

Basically while Orion is having incredibly uncomfortable misunderstandings, Jazz and Prowl have somehow stumbled across at least 20 crimes. None are the one they set out to find. It'd be the beautiful start of a buddy cop comedy bit if it wasn't so concerning.

Also, I know I said Darkwing is a suspect, and my daydreams of this thing go back and forth on whether or not it's fun to explore, but I think it'd be interesting if he actually does some investigating of his own to find out the culprit. Not because I think he's secretly a Good Guy deep inside, but for some possible reasons. One, he's so offended anyone would think he'd interface with Orion he wants to find the actual culprit to clear his name. Two, I'm not sure a miner would be allowed to keep a cogged sparkling? So I'm thinking in cases such as this custody would go to the cogged sire. And with no one coming forward as sire, there's a genuine possibility it'd go the the presumed sire. And Darkwing wants nothing to do with Orion Pax, much less his spawn.

But ohh this idea just got more interesting.

Though it would be extremely funny for them to interface and for everyone to be like "Wow Dee's swimmers are so strong that they kicked the original sire out."

But also very funny for Darkwing to go searching himself abd uncovering things he didn't know about.

Deep down he was a good guy, just propaganda kept him in line. He tolerates his little miners. But to see one sparked and without knowing who the sire is, and EVERYONE thinking it's him.

He does not want that and plus he wants Dee to quit glaring at him.

So he goes along with Jazzprowl to make sure everything Is running smoothly

Of course they uncover such horrors that the wealthy keep hidden. Not even he knew about.

"Orion is in trouble."

Jazzprowl looked at him shocked.

"Don't look at me like that. I still dislike you all,,, maybe. Less so now. But I'm not going to let my miners get into anymore trouble. Especially not Orion. He does not deserve whatever fate Sentinel has for him."

Imagine Darkwing didn't even know they get their cogs ripped out of them. And now he's horrified with Jazzprowl. And now it's a race agenst the clock to get back to that sector of the mines.

Too bad Orions feeling woosy, and he's cramping a lot. Can bearly keep the saw up before another contraction hits. And soon. He's being led away. Not by another bot. But by the mines itself.

I keep thinking comment wank and deletion wank ("wahhh no one comments! i'm flouncing because people talked about my fic on discord instead of commenting!" and the like) is overblown and based on a fundamental misunderstanding of typical engagement stats on ye olde internet, and also nothing new, and then I remember I haven't posted anything since like 2020 because my ability to write seemingly dried up and died during quarantine so like. Perhaps I do not have my finger on the pulse of fic-writing fandom.

But you're pretty stats-minded, do you have any data to suggest a change in commenting trends?

I haven't made any thorough investigation myself, but every stat I've seen through the years suggests that the typical level of feedback is around 100-200 hits: 10 kudos/likes: 1 comment.

Maybe you get a couple more "♥" comments if there's no 'like' option. Maybe the ratio is skewed by something being in a very small fandom and there only being ten hits. But in general, the actual rate of any sort of interaction in any era is terrible.

My theory for why it feels like there are changes is this:

If you were in your twenties on Livejournal, excitedly in baby's first big fandom, and making friends and social contacts all the time, it felt like there were tons of comments. You also couldn't see hit counts.

Twenty years later, you might be at a difficult time in your career, stressed and busy, rubbed the wrong way by the social media platforms that are currently in vogue, and between great fannish loves or into something that nobody cares about. You look at the hit counts on AO3 and the bit of tortured prose it took you a month to pull out of yourself, and you think no one is social or happy anymore.

...

Meanwhile, some current college student is barfing out enthusiastic garbage every week for some juggernaut ship from the latest big anime, and their comments section is full of people screaming about their faves.

The normal amount of feedback on fic is eternally "not enough", but the reality of the stats isn't what people are reacting to, in my opinion.

Most of the emotions surrounding all this are the same as those of the protagonist in every Christmas story about someone who needs to get their mojo back.

1. About the inc3st: I made a Siblings Theory thread on Twitter before, but I NEVER shipped Bunnydoll as siblings. The theory was just me trying to predict things based on the plot. Also, I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable by this joke:

2. The sexist part is so absurd that I'm not even going to touch that subject.

3. The kid acting homophobic here is exactly the point, he's so antagonistic to the point that he's going that far with Ragatha. Does that mean that I, the artist, am homophobic? Absolutely not.

Submas canon vs fanon

The entire time I have been in the Submas fandom I have seen a lot of confusion about what is canonical and what is a wide-spread fanon. Both in the sense of people thinking things were canon when they were not, and (more rarely) people thinking things were fanon when they were not. So I thought it might be useful to put together a little guide.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with using fanon. I use most of these headcannons in my own fics because I like them and canon is dumb anyway. (Note: pokemon is a huge sprawling mass and tends to contradict itself, and there have been changes across the various games/manga/anime)

All quotations are taken from bulbapidia.

Nimbasa Trio - FANON

Elesa has no connection to Ingo and Emmet besides living in the same place. There is one interaction between them in Pokemon Masters, and while they are on friendly terms they don't appear to be particularly close. Similarly, the idea that Ingo likes bad puns/Emmet does not stemmed from their fanon friendship with her.

Uncle Drayden - FANON

The only confirmed family Ingo and Emmet have are each other.

Cilan is a huge fan - CANON

Cilan is a fanboy of both of them in the anime.

Ingo is the older twin - CANON

In the original Japanese Emmet calls Ingo "nii-san" which means older brother.

"Do you have any siblings? I have an older brother, Ingo."

Emmet's joltik hoard - FANON

Emmet's galvantula knows the move cross poison. This is an "egg move" which can only be learnt through pokemon breeding. Since it would take several tries to get this move it probably would have left Emmet with a lot of Joltik. In theory. We don't see Emmet with joltiks in canon.

Ingo's kitty smile - CANON

He smiles like that in the manga. (Admittedly, it's not as exaggerated as the full on :3 people sometimes draw him with.) He also briefly smiles in PLA, but less cat-like.

Ingo's perpetual frown is unintentional - CANON

"<player>! Someone just told me something that troubled me deeply! They said that compared to Emmet, I'm too stiff! But that's just a misunderstanding! I know I smile when I'm having fun! I'd even say that I'm quite proud of how expressive I am when I speak! What? You say you've never seen me smile? I-is that so..."

They are both autistic - FANON

They are related to the twin heros - FANON

They share similar themes and motifs to the twin heros/Zekrom/Reshiram but that's it. They have no canon relationship.

Both of them are heavily coded as autistic. However, it's never been directly stated in the games that they are autistic and (to my knowledge) nobody at Game Freak/Nintendo has confirmed anything.

Ingo has a receding hairline - (debatably) CANON

He is drawn with one in the art book. Does the art book count as canon? Until something in the main games says otherwise, probably. (Though there is some argument to be had that it might be an unflattering haircut instead.)

Ingo arrived in Hisui via wormhole - FANON

"For my part, I simply found myself one day here in Hisui, a region whose name I'd never heard... All I could remember was my own name. I was still standing there in bafflement when the Pearl Clan came to my aid."

- Ingo, PLA. (However, the art book depicts the pearl clan finding him facedown on the ground, so take his standing claim with a grain of salt)

We still don't know how he got there. Similarly, it is quite common to show Ingo arriving during a blizzard/freezing to death and generally in poor health/injured/unconsciousness. But the way he recounts it sounds much more peaceful.

It'a also common to have Sneasler be the one to find him. The art book (of dubious canon) shows a human pearl clan member finding him, and Ingo's quote seems to confirm that. It's possible Sneasler was involved but she isn't mentioned.

Ingo got amnesia from hitting his head - FANON

We don't know how he got amnesia.

Ingo remembers Emmet as "the man in white" - FANON

"I'm starting to recall a man who looked... like me. We'd battle and discuss Pokémon, I think... The words "I like winning more than anything else" flashed through my mind just now..."

He makes no mention of remembering Emmet wearing white or smiling.

Ingo calls her "Lady Sneasler" - FANON

Ingo only calls her Sneasler, no Lady. In fact, nobody calls her or any of the ride pokemon Lord or Lady because...

The ride pokemon are noble pokemon - FANON

There are 10 blessed pokemon descended from the heros of old, and these pokemon are revered by the clans and have wardens. The blessed pokemon are divided into two groups, the rides and the nobles.

The ride pokemon are not called noble pokemon, and they do not get titles. Mai talks about "the great Wyrdeer" but does not call him lord or noble.

The art book uses the placeholder XX for the amount of time Ingo has been in Hisui. Some have taken the double digits to mean 10+, however the first digit could easily be a 0. So, we still don't know. Net 0 information.

Emmet must be taking Ingo vanishing badly - FANON

We have not heard from Emmet.

It seems very intentional that we never see TDL from Victim's perspective. Victim does not know TDL exists. We know that both TCO and TDL were behind the newgrounds attack (and I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that was the one where TCO was starting to not really enjoy destruction anymore*) so is this potentially all a huge misunderstanding? Could it be TDL who is actually responsible? I don't think it's a good theory but it's interesting how TDL has been deliberately obscured from Victim's knowledge.

There's no mention of TDL in any of these shots (Although now I am really curious about what lies Victim is talking about in the article of himself. I feel like there could be a lot to look at in this scene)

Also interesting how the Angel of Death sketch has a read outline around the whole of TCO, not just the head maybe bc TDL was also always there behind him?

* I went back to check and I was right. TCO looks like he's trying to talk down TDL here which is weird if he's just killed someone.

ESPECIALLY if you consider that this is one of the tank guys that were fighting back. If TCO is against harming them, why would he harm an innocent?

Yuta: Today, we’re thinking of playing a hidden camera prank on the talk of the town, child prodigy, Kanna Natsu, when he wakes up!

Hinata: Because both of us in 2wink love pranks!

Yuta: —and since we've been in the business for the while, the agency was like, “C'mon, show your junior how things work around here. You guys love that sort of stuff, right?”

Hinata: There's a difference between playing a prank and bullying, though!

Yuta: But we can't disobey the agency. That's just life, y'know? We've gotta work hard and pull this off in order to maintain our character image.

Hinata: Why do you seem weirdly pumped about this, Yuta-kun?

Yuta: This guy is Kanna Natsu, y'know…… Everyone's making a fuss about what a genius he is, but he's still just a brat, and seeing him get more attention than us pisses me off.

Yuta: We've gotta punish this ill-mannered newbie, don't we?

Hinata: Whoops, it's getting hard to keep my brother's wickedness in check these days, yknow~?

Hinata: Ah, but he's acting like this on purpose because that's the kind of image he's decided on! Yuta-kun is actually a good kid!

Hinata: All of you watching at home, please don't misunderstand!

Yuta: Hell yeah, that's the perfect excuse. Now, no matter how cruel and inhumane I behave, I can just say it's because my agency or my producer told me to play that sort of character.

Yuta: I can use that to justify my bullying. Hehehe.

Hinata: How wicked… Looking at you these days makes your big brother worry, Yuta-kun.

Hinata: …..Hm?

Kanna: ……

Kanna: ……?

Hinata: I knew this would happen. Look, look, Yuta-kun! Natsu-kun is awake already!

Yuta: Huh, No way. He looked like he was fast asleep— Maybe we made too much of a racket?

Hinata: What should we do? Should we abort mission? I didn't really want to do an unfunny and old-school prank like that anyways, so I'm fine with it.

Yuta: It sounds like you were making a fuss on purpose so that the plan would fail.

Kanna: Good morning.

Hinata: Ah, yup. Morning. You sure slept well.

Kanna: Yes, thank you. Though sleeping isn't something I do for leisure.

Kanna: I don't get the opportunity to sleep when I'm occupied with research, so I try to sleep as much as I can whenever I find time.

Kanna: Also, if I pretend to be asleep, everyone will leave me alone.

Hinata: Oh, so you were just pretending to be asleep? Then, did you realize we were trying to prank you?

Kanna: Yes. Though, even when I'm asleep, one half of my brain stays awake.

Yuta: Are you a dolphin?

Hinata: That's so genius-core.

Kanna: I think anyone could do it with enough training.

Yuta: Tsk tsk tsk. It's exactly because all that training is so tedious that nobody would ever be able to make a name for themselves as a genius.

Kanna: I see. I understand now.

Kanna: I think that if anyone focused all their efforts on a single thing for approximately a year, they could become an expert in that field.

Kanna: Only a child like myself would be able to concentrate on a single thing for as long as they want to, correct?

Kanna: Any adult, I mean, essentially everyone, requires time to eat, play, socialize, and maintain their physical and mental health.

Kanna: It is quite difficult to concentrate on a single thing.

Kanna: That is why they fall short of success. Yes, people who are able to do that to some extent from the very beginning— Only they are successful and lauded as geniuses.

Kanna: If everyone is limited to only being able to spend a fraction of their time on their efforts, then only those who are privileged are able to succeed and win.

Kanna: That is the reason, correct? It's logical. I can understand this.

Hinata: I've been wondering, what on earth is this kid going on about…?

Yuta: You like making theories about other people based on their behavior and then feeling like you've understood them, don't you?

Kanna: Yes. Because I'm around that age. That's adolescence, I suppose.

Hinata: Yeah, well I don't believe that! If you treated any older kid like a ‘teenage brat’ they'd get angry and rebel. They'd never admit that they're going through puberty!

Kanna: Maybe that was just the case for you, Yuta Aoi.

Hinata: … Oh? Huh? Ermm?

Kanna: It's easier to live when you believe that your ‘normal’ and the world's ‘normal’ aren't congruent.

Kanna: I've long since given up on that sort of premise.

Kanna: I'm different from everyone else. I'm certain, nothing can be done about this.

Hinata: Ummm… I'm terribly sorry if we're boring you or something, but I think there's been a misunderstanding, so let me clear it up.

Hinata: I'm Hinata.

Yuta: And I'm Yuta.

Kanna: No.

Kanna: I know about you two. The twin idols from Cosmic Productions, 2wink.

Kanna: The two of you have changed your marketing strategy as of late, with the older brother Hinata continuing to present as a cheerful a good kid—

Kanna: —While the younger brother, Yuta, differentiates himself from his older brother by growing out his hair and selling a ‘bad kid’ image.

Kanna: That is what the established theory is.

Hinata: The established ‘theory’?

Yuta: Those are just facts.

Kanna: What are illusions?

Hinata: Huh, why'd you bring that up suddenly? What are you talking about?

Kanna: An illusion, or ‘sleight of hand’, is something that takes advantage of people's imagination.

Kanna: You make the world think that ‘the twins have differentiated their appearances and begun walking separate paths.’

Kanna: That way, you can do as much deception as you please.

Kanna: The twins that are supposedly never interchangeable, swap places in secret. Older brother becomes younger brother. Younger brother becomes older brother.

Kanna: Characteristic differences in hair length can also be accounted for using wigs and such.

Kanna: People tend to assume based on their prior knowledge, that ‘the one with longer hair must be the younger brother,’ since both brothers have similar facial features and so on.

Hinata: … Even if all of that were true, what good would it do for us to impersonate each other?

Kanna: Simply put, you two probably just enjoy those sorts of tricks.

Kanna: Furthermore, there are countless merits to being able to switch places. That is probably why having twins swap places is considered taboo, even in the most hard-core of detective novels.

Kanna: It's simply too convenient. It'd be used to forge alibis to no end, because now, anything goes.

Kanna: Additionally, if you succeed at your trivial ‘swapping places’ prank, you'd be able to make a fool of the child prodigy brat that everyone is making a fuss about, correct?¹

Kanna: You'd be able to say “That kid acts like he's a genius, but he's an oblivious idiot who couldn't even notice we switched places.”

Hinata & Yuta: ……

Kanna: 2wink is a unit comprised of a ‘good kid’ older brother and a ‘bad kid’ younger brother.

Kanna: Recently, it seems as though the two of them have truly diverged and are trying to pursue their own paths.

Kanna: That is why. Even if the younger brother was specifically requisitioned for work that would earn him points or experience as a ‘good kid’— The older brother would swap in and take his place. The reverse applies as well.

Kanna: So the two of you steadily gain experience and continue growing, correct?

Kanna: You're each trying to specialize in being a ‘good kid’ and ‘bad kid’.

Kanna: Waiting for an opportunity, with nobody any wiser.

Yuta: ……

Kanna: I don't have much interest in anything. However, I find your impressive tactics very interesting.

Kanna: I'm not trying to get in your way. However, by exposing your actions like this, I can render your footage unfit for broadcast.

Kanna: Even if what I said just now might be untrue.

Kanna: If the world's people begin to doubt you, you'll have a hard time operating. They might begin to think things like “Maybe they've swapped places?” or “Are they playing tricks?”

Kanna: All the earnest and serious people of the world will begin to view you poorly.

Kanna: That probably would not be desirable for you.

Kanna: I apologize. Being filmed and broadcasted in my sleep is quite embarrassing.

Kanna: That is why I have taken these preventative measures to keep it from occurring. Please understand that I bear no ill-will towards the two of you.

Kanna: That is all. I'm going to go back to bed now. Goodnight.

Kanna: Zzz, zzz.

Yuta: ……

Hinata: … He ended up being the real deal.

Yuta: Yeah. I figured it was just the usual hype you see on TV and magazines.

Hinata: (But really, I never thought he'd notice we ‘switched’.)

Yuta: (Yup. I thought nobody could tell. But this kid saw through us, probably just through a glimpse of our activities on the news or on the internet.)

Hinata: (To top it all off, just in case— He made sure we wouldn't get in trouble even if we did air it, by following it up with “what I said might be untrue.”)

Yuta: (He didn't want to inconvenience us, so he acted considerately.)

Hinata: (This brat sure acts full of himself. I ought to scribble on his face while he sleeps.)

Yuta: (Give it a rest already... Let sleeping gods lie, Yuta-kun.)²

Hinata: (You're such a good kid, Hinata-kun.)

Yuta: (And you’re a bad kid, right, Yuta-kun?)

Kanna: Zzz, zzz…♪

Hinata: (This kid might be incredible— more than anyone could imagine.)

Yuta: (But his sleeping face is adorable, just like any other normal kid's would be, y’know)

Translation notes

He's repeating back the same phrases that Hinata and Yuta used to describe him while he was 'sleeping'..

The original saying is '触らぬ神に祟りなし' which is means the same thing as 'let sleeping dogs lie', but I retained the 神 portion because I figured it might be a fun play on Kanna's first name '神無'
