Winter 08: Dateless - Pt. 2 (61/64)
"I can see why you love it here," Malte said, staring out over The Valley.
Rachel nodded, "Yes, I adore this place. It's secluded enough, so not many people come here. And you can see the whole town from up here. I used to come here all the time, just to gather my thoughts or read a book in quiet. I mean, look at that view."
"It's lovely," Malte said without taking his eyes off Rachel. "I could look at it all day."
It took Rachel a while before noticing he was still looking at her. She giggled when she realised. Malte laughed, too.
"Are you not cold?" He then asked.
Rachel shook her head, "Nope, I'll tell you a secret; I'm wearing an entire layer of wool underneath these clothes that keeps me plenty warm."

Idea I like…
Simon reading old school pulp romance novels.
It started as just, an impulsive “I need something different to get me out of my own head.” Like when you do something out of left field to help with certain anxieties.
He didn’t expect there to be smut.
He also didn’t expect to like it…?
There’s a focus on emotion, there’s trust, it’s frankly quite soft. It helps, and he didn’t expected to, with reclaiming his sexuality a bit.
He has a small collection, because romance quality is all over the place and he needs a few guaranteed ‘good ones’, and they’re all beat up pretty bad because he got them for like 50p at the thrift store.
They’re all also older, (50 shades decimated the romance genre and it has yet to recover) and he sneers at the bad photoshop covers of the more modern covers. (I have opinions™️ and I think Simon deserves to have some for silly things too)
Y'know, I'm 100% with you on this one. (Especially him sneering at the new photoshop covers. Where's the ART!? Where's the meticulously hand-painted vaguely blurry shirtless male protag!?)
He definitely has a few favorites that he goes back to when he's got some downtime and just wants a good story. I think he's VERY picky about the smut that's included, so when he finds sort of a holy grail where the smut isn't awful and it actually has a good story with it, he holds on to it. The rest he just re-donates.
Also you are completely correct that he does not read anything published later than like, maybe 1999. He has never read 50 shades and he does not want to. He's heard enough through the grapevine. He sticks to his older pulp novels, and he has 0 shame about it too. Go on, ask him about the plot of the book he's reading. He'll tell you. In detail.

ok I am also going to do this for emrys. who has the vibes of someone who's a great driver and technically she is but she's not immune to a bit of road rage if you really piss her off. has 86 road pet peeves and her eye will twitch at any of them. can change a tire and oftentimes slows down and stops for people broken down on the side of the road to offer to change their tire if needed. drives with one hand on the top of the wheel and does not admit it's so she can hold the passenger's hand with the other (astarion get on this asap). relents to traffic laws but deep in her soul she longs to go 75 at all times. doesn't pick the music and will gladly sit in silence on a 6 hour long road trip, or listen to the passenger talk about whatever. yeah fine we can stop for mcdonalds I guess. also probably likes when people fall asleep in the car while she drives because it makes her feel important. threatens to turn the car around so help her tyr. but also. I Will Get To You To The Destination, On My Life.

one thing i’ve been thinking about is the claiming/not claiming experiences in fiction thing and the necessity of empathy or writing the stories of people profoundly like unlike ourselves without laying claim to specific experiences. but also one thing i find is that my /own/ specific experience, my community’s, they aren’t monolithic in any way or something i could write down as This is /ME/, but that when i write profoundly different settings and characters shards and aspects of that experience pop up in the strangest places. there’s little shards of my home town every where i go. i think it’s really important to avoid that form of writerly solipsism which places physical and embodied personal experiences and understandings as the universals of everyone everywhere, so i don’t want it to be that, but it is especially interesting to me as i expand my writing especially in fantasy and sci fi locations what it is that has that resonance
