I just learned today, after a good 700 hours in-game, that it's possible for Aradin and his crew to attack you at your camp in act 3 (through someone saying, paraphrased, that if you enjoy him as a character you must not have played act 3), and I'm honestly so bloody into this possibility now.

Like, sure, on one hand that's textbook fantasy thug behavior and I like that he has the chutzpah to do it, but also... yeah, go on and tell the person you learned was hired to capture the Nightsong maybe three hours into the game, about how the Nightsong is chilling at your camp. Truly, the man who was offered enough money for this contract to have him set for life, and who'd abandon an archdruid and some of his own crew because they got attacked can be trusted with that information.

I'm sure nothing can go wrong if you tell him, he's such an absolutely 100% trustworthy individual. Surely this man has not done anything nefarious or underhanded (such as attacking a person at their camp) in his life. You should also give him a copy of the key to your room at the Elfsong in case he wants to drop by later for tea and crumpets...??????

I know this person likely meant that this is a reason one shouldn't like him, but if anything, I honestly enjoy his character like three times more, now that I know this can happen. He's a greedy, cutthroat, an kind of stupid man who is only an adventurer because his daddy was one, and all he wants is money enough to retire.

He's barely- to moderately hinged. I'm obsessed with him now.

Next-generation exoskeleton technology XoMotion developed by SFU researchers is poised to offer people living with mobility challenges a new chance at free and independent movement.

The state-of-the-art robotic exoskeleton known as XoMotion is the result of a decade of research and the product of an SFU spin off company, Human in Motion Robotics (HMR) Inc. The company has recently garnered millions in investment, an overseas partnership and a suite of new offices in Vancouver.

XoMotion allows individuals with mobility challenges to stand up and walk on their own, without additional support. When in use, XoMotion maintains its stability and simultaneously encompasses all the ranges of motion and degrees of freedom needed for users to self-balance, walk, sidestep, climb stairs, crouch, and more.

Sensors within the lower-limb exoskeleton mimic the human body’s sense of logic to identify structures along the path, and in-turn, generate a fully balanced motion.

SFU professors Siamak Arzanpour and Edward Park, both researchers in the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering, began work on the device in 2014 with a vision to enhance exoskeleton technology and empower individuals with mobility challenges to have more options for movement.

“We felt that there was an immediate need to help people with motion disabilities to walk again, with a full range of motion. At the time, exoskeletons could only walk forward. That was the only motion possible,” says Arzanpour.

The SFU professors, who first met in 2001 as graduate students at the University of Toronto, co-founded HMR in 2016, bringing together a group of students, end-users, therapists, and organizations to build upon the exoskeleton. Currently, 70 per cent of HMR employees are SFU graduates.

Through a mutual connection at SFU’s Surrey Campus, Arzanpour and Park were introduced to Chloe Angus, a Vancouver-based fashion designer who was diagnosed with an inoperable benign tumor in her spinal cord in 2015 which resulted in a sudden and permanent loss of mobility in her legs. At the time, doctors told Angus that she would need a wheelchair to move for the rest of her life.

Years after her diagnosis, XoMotion is helping her defy all odds.

Angus quickly became a key member of the HMR team by working as an end-user to test the exoskeleton first-hand throughout its stages of development.

“The first time I walked with the exoskeleton was a jaw-dropping experience,” says Angus, who has since accepted a role as HMR’s Director of Lived Experience. “After all these years, the exoskeleton let me stand up and walk on my own without falling. I felt like myself again.”

“Without Chloe and her inspiration, we wouldn’t be here today. Her contributions to our success are monumental,” says Arzanpour, who envisions the technology to one day be available as an assistive option in public settings, such as malls.

In recent years, HMR has garnered multiple streams of investment, including a contract with Innovative Solutions Canada, and $10 million in funding during their Series A round in May, including an $8 million investment and strategic partnership from Beno TNR, a prominent Korean technology investment firm.

“When I look back and see how far we’ve come, I can say that it wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing team,” says Arzanpour. “Everyone here believes in our mission and sees themselves as part of the progress and success of Human in Motion Robotics.”

The Nasaries.

The country was , as we said before, divided into 7 autonomies, which were; Seville (native Spanish Muslims), Granada (Berber), Córdoba (Arabs, beno Jahwar), Toledo (Berber), Valencia and the east of al Andalus (Arabs, Yemen ), Zaragoza (beni Hud ), Badajos (Berber).

The Nasaries soon realised that to assure their survival they needed a safe stronghold that could keep enemies out. Soon they found the perfect spot with the Sierra Nevada (mountains) on one side and a steep cliff on the other. Extremely difficult for enemies to reach! Here they built a hilltop fortress, with time every ruler came to contribute by building his part of the fortress until “Alhambra” became a palace complex with gardens, palaces, stables, etc.

Alhambra comes from Arabic and means “the red one” . The reason behind the name could be one of two or maybe both, as the earth where Alhambra stands is red, consequently the building itself has a reddish colour. The other reason is that the Berber tribe that ruled from Alhambra was called “al Ahmar”(meaning red in Arabic). The elevation of the palace complex is 738 meters above sea level and the total area is 88.02 km. The name Granada derives from Arabic “Karnata” or “Gharnatah” meaning “hill off strangers”.

When Muhammad I and the Nasaries arrived at the Sabina hill, there was already an old settlement there called Elibyrge, from the 5th century b.C.

Another reason this place was chosen was the confluence of four rivers the Darro, the Genil, the Monachil and the Beiro. Thus water in abundance! Alhamra is influenced by Almohad building style. Muhammad the first never saw his palace completed as he died before its finalazation, however his son Muhammad II concluded the construction.

In Muhammad I part of alhamra there are three towers; The broken tower, the Keep and the Watch tower. The Watchtower was used for receiving “mirror signals'' from nearby hills and mountains as an early warning if danger was approaching.

The part of the palace complexes built by Yusef I is called “ the palace of Comares”. It is without any doubt the most beautiful part of alhamra, it was built to intimidate!

Here is where Yusef would receive Christian emissaries in the hall of ambassadors. What Yusef lacked in military strength he made up for it here intimidating, giving an impression of power.

Yusef's great architectural achievements came to an abrupt end when in October 1354 he was assassinated during his morning prayer, he was only 33 years old.

Later on in the history of the Nasarids, Muhammad V constructed several amazing parts of al hamra but he is most famous for the “patio of the lions”.

He was extremely interested in architecture, as was his christian counterpart; Pedro I.

They had architectural competitions amongst themselves, they were best friends and as long as Pedro I was in power, the Nasarids had nothing to fear.

Nasaries summary:

One important reason the Nasaries cling to power for so long, was their ability to constantly come up with new and fresh strategies as alternatives to military power.

Their creativity reached from secret early warnings by mirror signals, intimidating and giving a false impression of power, to befriending the enemy and sharing their interests.

There were other strategies, not mentioned yet; were diplomatic strategies, confusing the enemies by giving the wrong impression, and possession of information etc.

A new country had emerged in Morocco called Beni Marine. They offered support to Granada in many different ways; military and economic support. This support was essential and prolonged their reign in Granada significantly.

But regrettably, Muhammad VI saw the fall of Alhambra and with it the collapse of the last refuge of the Moorish power in Spain.

The Castilla and Leóns conjugal duo; Isabella and Fernando, had claimed the entire country, and now we enter the aftermath of the fall of al andalus.

Times of Terror

With the christian advances the Muslims were gradually forced to the south of the country, eventually ending up in Granada. The Christians gave two choices to the Muslims and the Jews in their newly claimed territories, to be killed, or to be exiled. The Nasaries had made many agreements with the Christians, however, each time, the Christians broke their promises and agreements.

At one point, Beni Marine and Beni Ahmar merged their armies, and claimed back a few cities, such as Seville. Unfortunately, these advancements quickly came to an abrupt halt. It was not all futile however, as Yousef Beni Marine took back, and in turn, preserved many of the books in Córdoba, which can be found in a library in Morocco till this day.

The 2nd of February 1492, however, Granada capitulated. Shortly after, the Jews and the Muslims that originated from other countries were exiled; after 800 years they were now considered strangers in their own countries. Many Berber families that returned to Morocco, still have the keys to their forefathers' houses in al Andalus till this day. Their properties and wealth were taken from them.

The fate of the Moriscos

During the 801 years of Muslim rule, an enormous amount of native Christians had converted to Islam. Their fate was even darker, they were now called “moriscos”; a kind of second degree citizens. As they had nowhere else to go, exile was not an option, leaving them with only death.

A secret police force was set up, similar to Hitlers Gestapo. Their function was to secretly search for any Spanish people that were morisco. The people that were discovered were tortured to death.

They were burned, thrown in boiling water/oil alive, hammered with rusted nails, buried alive, or kept in a black cellar until they got blind, or got their tongues cut out.

Years later, when Napoleon’s army occupied Spain, they said that they were appalled to see how the Spaniards had tortured and killed their own people in such a horrifying way.

As the native Spanish Muslims had nowhere to go, they tried to hide from the secret police.

The terror they must have felt, trying to hide from the secret police in an attempt to avoid being discovered, tortured and killed must have been indescribable.

Many of these moriscos changed their names to “blend in” while trying to escape the horror.

Ex. someone called haddad (arabic for blacksmith), would have called himself Herrero (Castillian spanish for blacksmith). If he were in danger again, he would once more change his name to Ferrer (Catalan for blacksmith). Some of the moriscos that succeeded in escaping retribution, would hide their properties, such as books and identifiable items.

Some of these items have been discovered, while reconstructing old buildings in modern times. As was the case of a lady in Toledo a few years back.

Reflection:

The doors of collectivism and mutual respect had now closed. These doors opened with the arrival of the Moorish 801 years ago.

The doors of a multicultural society with tolerance and acceptance of others. 801 years later, these doors were closed perpetually. Left was mono-cultural, mono-ethnic country. With acceptance of only one religion, a country full of fears with all the limitations brought with it.

The new Spain was looking to finance itself by taxes from the inside, and colonization from the outside. Al Andalus was now dead and Spain crippled.

TGOA Worldbuilding: Fashion and Culture in the Major Cities

Okay so I said I would be back and here I am. In these past few weeks I’ve been drowned in exams, working on stuff for Rome Pride Parade, another couple of demonstrations and marches, a two-day-long dance recital. I am DEAD. But as writers often do, I am back to haunt y’all with a little worldbuilding based on some sketches I did for my instagram page. Which I will pick back up soon I SWEAR.

So let’s begin! This post is going to be kind of long so make sure you have time! I’ll throw in a Read More after the first city.

Malnova, the Ancient

The town was unkept and brimming with criminality and death and illness.

But its past was glorious and, if one paid attention and knew enough to look for it, it emerged from the shroud of ignorance and wilful denial that was its shield and its prison. Scio had learned all about it as a child walking about with her beloved master, and now she did her best to transmit that wonder to her companion, wanting her to see Malnova as it once stood, wise and uncorrupted.

Scio had always been fascinated by the views hidden within the serpentine alleys of the centre. Ancient, almost-forgotten ruins of the world that once had been rested under a layer of dust in-between the villas of the rich. White marble spilled into the streets, reflecting the faces of the present and the past alike.

Malnova is the heart of the Knights’ rule, and even though the land can be counted more or less as being a confederacy of different cities, it’s in Malnova that the majority of political functions are held and decisions taken. As it serves the practical function of a Capital city, it’s constantly suffering a barrage of trends and input from the rest of the nation, which makes it difficult for it to maintain its specificity. Malnova’s ways are set in stone: it’s easily the most conservative city of all, both in practices and in fashion; religious imagery is woven in every aspect of its citizens’ lives. Sun’s colors are everywhere, and so are her statues, often depicting her as a merciless warrior seeking vengeance and punishing sinners with the righteous fury of her fire. The ruins of Malnova’s past (before the Knights) are left to rot in their squalid, paling splendour, and their meanings and purpose have been forgotten and buried; the people wander among their marble skeletons that have become voiceless and forget themselves as well.  Guilt and a very accented sense of duty are Malnova’s key words - interspersed with the promise of blessings to those who behave in accordance to the Law. Probably because of this, it’s precisely in Malnova that most of the rebels of the land are born and gather: an immense web of revolutionaries mingles inextricably with its underworld of delinquency and poverty, but it has expanded to reach even the upper class, mostly thanks to privileged university students who embrace the cause of liberation from the Knights’ near-dictatorship.

Kristina, the Crystalline

Kristina was resplendent in the bright colours of the midday sun when they passed underneath its solar glass walls, watching its iridescent reflexes from afar, from the lowest section of the cliff it was perched upon; they stood where the evergreen trees gave way to a softer vegetation that morphed slowly into a collection of colourful pebbles, sleeping by the ocean.

It had been universally agreed in the past twenty years or so that there was no city finer than Kristina, nor more religious – only within its walls stood more than three hundred Shrines, not including the small, private ones, each unique and beautiful, reflecting the many facets of a faith that had known so many changes in the course of the centuries. Most of them had been abandoned, left to ruin in solitude like forgotten museums that had no more voice because no one understood their treasures anymore.

Kristina houses the most important temple of the land, the Shrine of Sun Conqueror; relatively new, it was built to celebrate Sun’s victory over Moon, and light prevailing over darkness, justice over cruelty. People from all the land gather there to celebrate four days of fast and prayer each new year: the new year start when the Spring Equinox begins, which is when the mortals place the start of Sun’s rule. The city itself is a work of art: it stands above the cliff where legend says Moon was born, and it has not entirely forgotten its roots of silver moonlight. Crisp veils and watery colours prevail even in this time when Moon is banished, and Kristina retains its mystical appeal and its role as Muse and Inspiration. Even if Moon, the protector of poetry and music has been turned into a monster, a ghost to chase away, the city still fascinates poets and writers, who gravitate into its orbit almost naturally.  Kristina is also the only city to boast a measure of autonomy from the Knights’ laws: because of this, it has been allowed to keep its public library open, if censored, and its alphabetisation levels are far higher than those of its sister cities.

Klara, probably the greatest poet to ever exist, was born there, and so was Skalo, the youngest and most reasonable of the Knights.

Nevenkita, the Unconquered

There were no imposing palaces in Nevenkita: all the buildings were small, huddled together in a rainbow of coarse bricks and sloping rooftops upon which shone proudly artful mosaics made out of solar glass; most houses were connected by suspended bridges that had become home to tangles of poison ivy and brambles, and on the highest floors sometimes balconies touched while thin strings collected lanterns that hung into the void.

Everywhere were visible the signs of war – it was the stone itself that bore its scars, faithful and supportive of the people that had given blood and soul and tears to defend it. The night spilled velvet into the air, and never had Scio felt it more welcoming or more alive: every shadow, every star, every cloud seemed to ring with it, with the pulsing energy of the mortals, the songs and voices and dances and noises that crowded the quiet, made it sentient and ripe with meaning.

Nevenkita is the only city never to have fallen under the Knights’ rule. Protected by the enchanted forest where the God of Darkness and Dreams used to dwell, by the ocean that Moon commanded and the mountains the Crawlers hide within, the Unconquered receives help and resources from people of the foreign nations, who deem it a point of honor to aid the city in its resistance.  During the course of the decades, Nevenkita has suffered and survived many sieges at the hands of the Knights’ army of Shorina, and has managed to keep its independence. The people of Nevenkita are very well cultured, know the history of the land and have high schooling rates. As opposed to the rest of the cities, Nevenkita’s healthcare system is not only extremely efficient, but entirely free - and Nevenkita’s doctors are known for smuggling medicines and sometimes equipment into the land, and for visiting people illegally (see: Koro). The city is almost single-handedly responsible for keeping the Resistance alive and safe, and receives a constant flux of immigrants escaping the Knights (though most of them later cross the border seeking asylum). The most important figure of the Resistance is Beno, Defìo’s wife; three times the leader of Nevenkita, she has fought nail and tooth ever since she was fifteen in a time where all hope seemed lost, and has attracted a fair number of followers inside the land, too. Her brutal execution has shaken the public to the point of reawakening movements of dissent all across the cities, and she is now considered a war hero. 

Defìo, though exiled, has picked up her legacy.
