There’s a thunk on the other side of the door. It could be either Cody’s fist or his head.

Anakin doesn’t particularly care. He stares directly opposite him, drawing his legs closer to his chest as he shifts on the marble floor.

“Skywalker, come on,” the man says, sounding impatient. Anakin sneers. “We’re going to be late.”

“Fuck you,” Anakin says, resting his chin on his knees.

“We’re going to be late and your fiance is going to think you’re getting cold feet and planning to leave him at the altar and he’s going to make it everyone’s fucking problem in the entire goddamn city. Including me.”

Anakin narrows his eyes, considering the words. He’s not—he doesn’t want Obi-Wan to think he’s running out on him. He’s in his suit, light gray with a golden pattern swirling through the fabric, pristine white shirt and tie, lingerie beneath it all. He’s washed and plucked and styled, and he’s ready to marry Obi-Wan Kenobi.

He is absolutely not ready to leave their shared bathroom in their loft to go to whatever venue Obi-Wan has booked for their ceremony and then their reception. And that has nothing to do with his soon-to-be husband.

And everything to do with his husband’s brother, currently thumping his fist—or head, and Anakin prefers that mental picture—against the locked door to the—to the tune of…

He’s on his feet and unlocking the door in a fit of pique. “Is that really fucking ‘Here Comes The Bride’, you fuc—”

Cody’s fist, raised and pulled back for another knock, doesn’t stop. 

Not until it makes contact with Anakin’s eye.

The pain is secondary to the fucking shock. “Holy shit,” he says.

To his credit, Cody doesn’t look as celebratory as Anakin’s always thought he’d look after laying a punch on Anakin.

He actually looks pretty fucking terrified. “Fuck,” he says succinctly. “Obi-Wan’s gonna kill me.”

“Yeah,” Anakin agrees, turning around to look in the mirror behind him. “Holy shit, Fett. I’m bleeding. You made me bleed on my wedding day.”

“Quick,” Cody says. “Display the bedsheets.”

Anakin leans over the sink and prods at the red skin beneath his eye in morbid curiosity, pushing extra hard over the small cut left behind by Cody’s ring. “Oh, dead man walking’s got jokes. Tell that one to Obi-Wan, I think he’d love the implication another man took my virginity. On our wedding day.”

Cody’s glare could level a city. “Now you have to wear this.”

“I’m not wearing that,” Anakin shoots him a look in the mirror. “I wasn’t going to let you tie a blindfold on me before and now that you’ve punched me in the face, not sure I’m trusting you more.”

“Yeah, well. Before you were going to put this on because your fiance requested that you’re led to the venue blindfolded—ostensibly so it’s all a surprise, but if you ask me, he doesn’t think you can run as fast without your eyes—and now you’re going to wear it so Obi-Wan doesn’t see the shiner you’ll be sprouting in a few hours.”

“You think I’m going to wear a blindfold my entire wedding?” Anakin asks, laughter bursting out of him. “You think I’m getting married to someone as hot as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and I’m not going to look at him? Fuck, Fett, if I thought it’d work, I’d tear out everyone else’s eyes so I could look at him through them as well.”

“You say the most disturbing things like they’re something to be proud about,” Fett says, a bit like it’s a miracle.

“Like you’ve never torn out a man’s eyes,” Anakin rolls his own and prods at his cheek again.

“Yeah, well, at least I’m sane enough to understand they’re pretty fucking useless outside of the skull,” Cody leans against the doorway with a sneer.

Anakin sneers back. “Daddy, look what Cody did to my face, Daddy. Daddy, it hurt and I cried it hurt so bad. Daddy, did you hear that? I gave tears that should have been yours to Cody instead.”

Cody starts forward automatically, eyes narrowing. Anakin smirks at him.

“Just practicing, Cody,” he smiles. “In case it comes up.”

“You dirty fucking liar.”

“Yeah,” he nods. “Is that news to you?”

“Skywalker, wear it.”

“Fett, no.”

“Skywalker.”

“Fett.”

“Skywalker.”

“Fett.”

There’s a vein pulsing in Cody’s forehead. It’s the prettiest thing about him. 

“Skywalker. I’m putting this blindfold on you. And you’re going to fucking consent to it because it’s what Obi-Wan fucking wants from you. And me. And it’s my brother’s fucking wedding day and honestly, I was really hoping we’d never fucking get here, but fuck if life’s been that nice to me, ever. Even once.  And when I go to sleep, the idea of leaving you on the side of the road in a soggy cardboard box like a stray cat in a fucking hurricane is literally my happy place. Add a few bullets in your most annoying bits, it’s practically heaven, alright, so please don’t think I care about your wedding day, but fuck you if you think I don’t give a fuck about his.”

It may be the most Cody’s ever spoken to him in one go.

He narrows his eyes and weighs his options.

“Fine,” he says.

“Fuck yo—wait. What?”

“Fine,” Anakin turns to face him with a shrug. “I might never trust you not to punch me in the face given half a chance—” he gestures to his eye. “But Obi-Wan wouldn’t trust me with just anyone. Especially blindfolded. So. If I’m marrying into his mob and his multiple properties and his family, I guess. I guess I’m marrying into his trust in you.” 

Cody’s eyes narrow. “What else.”

Anakin shrugs again and grins. “And I can’t wait to hear you try to convince Obi-Wan Kenobi to last the whole wedding ceremony—to me—without demanding to see my eyes.”

Cody’s face freezes, fabric of the blindfold stretched between his fingers.

Feeling very obliging all of a sudden, Anakin leans forward to press his face into the silk. “But Cody, you have to know that if my daddy asks me to do something—like, I don’t know, show him my eyes during our wedding ceremony—I will.”

Cody grimaces. Anakin smiles.

“Thank you, Cody,” Obi-Wan murmurs as Fett guides Anakin to a stop in front of him. “I’ll take him from here.”

“I think I’m just realizing you made me walk him down the aisle,” Cody hisses. "Kenobi, it fucking looks like I'm giving him away."

“It’s not as if he has a father to do it,” Obi-Wan points out, hands wrapping around Anakin’s, strong and sure and achingly familiar. “Thank you for your service.”

“I thought you wanted the venue to be a surprise,” Fett sounds furious.

Anakin beams. “I’ve known it’s going to be in the club for ages. Who do you think suggested the venue? Ceremony and reception in one place with our bed a few floors away? Come on, use your brain, Cody.”

“Don’t make me punch you again,” Cody mutters as he takes a step back.

Obi-Wan’s tone changes like a light flickering off. “Again?”

“Yeah,” Cody huffs. “Did I fucking stutter?”

These bitties can easily get along with cop types as long as the cop type bitty doesn't mind them being essentially a mob/mafia boss! And will even enjoy them being around to help keep others in line!

Additional info: These bitties are a lot more into crime and stuff and are considered a Criminal and Mafia bitty types! They will often teach your younger bitties how to fight and really do best with pre-teens at the earliest! Though they are very protective and won't try to teach them something they don't think they could handle, and with their protective nature they often stay away from teaching even older teens how to use things like guns!

your muse is benjamin’s spouse who had been turned into a vampire.  he’s been searching for them and their sire for years. finally, he finds them but the kill isn’t as easy as he would have hoped. even though he’s a skilled hunter, his feelings for your muse were enough to get in the way. your muses sire orders your muse to kill benjamin, but though they’ve been turned into a monster they don’t know if they can forget the love they felt for him and their child. now your muse and benjamin are wrestling with their head and their heart. on one hand they know what they should do but on the other it’s so much easier to just give into temptation.

your muse is another hunter who has joined benjamin in his hunt for revenge. the friendship started when your muse found benjamin through his good reputation as a hunter and asked him for help on one of your muse’s cases. he aided them and then asked for their help in return. now your muse, benjamin, and his child are on the road searching for his spouse and their sire. through the journey the friendship your muse and benjamin felt begins to blossom into something more. your muse almost doesn’t want to get benjamin his revenge.

your muse is madeleine’s sire who has been underground in their tomb for several centuries. a group of young adults poking around where they shouldn’t be is the reason for your muse’s escape. after feeding and getting their bearings, your muse wants to seek out madeline (who they know as frigga). they end up finding her through her reputation and word of mouth. the reunion is tear filled and passionate, but things don’t stay that way. with your muse in the picture madeleine starts to feel her position as the clan leader is fragile and your muse is hurt that madeleine wasn’t the one to find and free them.

your muse is the first mortal madeleine had ever turned and they’ve stuck by her side as much as she would let them. this is why your muse is her most trusted advisor and bodyguard. an uprising against madeleine occurs, one that is too big for either madeleine or your muse to fight, so they both go into hiding. madeleine wants to get her revenge and her power back and she’s willing to fight dirty in order to accomplish that.

your muse is genevieve’s spouse, any gender. many were surprised whenever they got together as your muse’s family was fairly new to the mob scene. also not to  mention that your muse appears more cruel and calculating on the outside, where as genevieve is extremely charming. your muse was able to see through that mask but also allowed genevieve to see through theirs. they’re this power couple who are completely lethal around other people but melt around each other whenever they’re alone.

your muse is genevieve’s body guard. something happens where genevieve and her daughter have to go into hiding separate from genevieve’s spouse. your muse accompanies genevieve and amelia, having to pose as a suburban family until the threat back home in chicago is taken care of. 

* elias fuller.  ( peter gadiot fc )  police detective.  bisexual. :  detroit: become human based, sort of a re-imagined hank anderson, he’s the head detective, his younger brother was an advocate for android equality, during a rally he was killed, elias sort of blames androids for his brother’s involvement and death, he was reluctantly put on the case to find out why androids are deviating.  ( pinterest board. )

your muse is an android sent by cyberlife to help aid elias in his investigation of the deviant androids. elias enters the partnership not liking your muse because of what they are. your muse is just there to do their job, until they dive deeper into the investigation and they begin to experience emotion.. not only towards the other androids but towards elias as well. elias’ own emotions and opinions towards your muse begin to shift too when they see that your muse is beginning to deviate.

*   dahlia swain.  ( holliday grainger fc )  hogwarts professor.  bisexual. :  harry potter based, was a ravenclaw whenever she was a student, an excellent seer which is why she teaches divination, she married but he became a death eater during the second wizarding war, her brother was a death eater as well,  she changed her last name and began a career at hogwarts.  ( pinterest board. ) 

- wanted plots / connections: 

your muse is a fellow professor who the students are notorious for shipping with professor swain, even going so far as to pranking both of them so that they have to spend more time together. dahlia isn’t sure that they want to start anything with your muse due to her past with her ex-husband. your muse has demons of their own but they find themselves drawn to dahlia and want to make it work.

your muse is dahlia’s ex-husband, elijah reaves,  ( his name can be changed ) who has served his time in azkaban and is being released. whether he’s changed his heart and his views during their time spent in azkaban is up to you.  however, he wants to reconnect with dahlia and finds that she’s back at hogwarts. the reunion will be anything but sweet as dahlia is not quick to forgive everything that he’s done. 

your muse is a student at hogwarts and dahlia is their favorite professor. they think they may have an affinity for divination and think they’re a seer, so they seek out dahlia’s help with controlling their visions. 

* ebony barnett. ( madelaine petsch fc )  witch.  bisexual. :  she’s always had an affinity for light/nature magic, she was part of a powerful coven, she fell hopelessly in love with a witch whom leaned towards dark magic, there was a prophecy that ebony and this witch would become too powerful to stop should their love flourish, the coven grew scared and erased ebony’s memories, they were murdered before they could erase ebony’s lover’s memories, she owns a book store/coffee shop.  ( pinterest board. ) 

- wanted plots / connections: 

your muse is the witch/warlock that the coven had taken ebony away from. for years they searched for ebony without being able to find her, but eventually they were able to find the witch whom hid ebony in the first place. after getting the information they needed from that witch, they took off to find ebony. ebony was able to feel the dark magic radiating off of your muse whenever they stepped foot in her shop. she’s wary of them, especially when they make declarations of lost love. your muse isn’t willing to give up or let ebony go so easily, as they haven’t forgotten the devotion and love they once felt or the prophecy the coven once feared. * myra elliot.  ( naomi scott fc )  astronaut.  homosexual. : incredibly intelligent, always at the top of her class, became an astronaut, joined a program that focused on finding new planets and lifeforms, went to space with a team of six, they were separated in a crash land on a new planet.  ( pinterest board. )

your muse lives on the planet that myra crashes onto. your muse takes in myra and helps them as their wounds begin to heal. meanwhile, your muse also shows myra around their planet. your muse’s people are wary of myra but begin to accept them slowly. they even offer to fix myra’s craft or give them a new one to get home. though as myra starts to get close to your muse and sees the beauty in their planet, they are in no rush to get back to earth. your muse is a witch and ollie is their familiar. they have a relationship that was once seen as normal but is now more taboo. while they try to hide it whenever amongst other witches, it’s getting increasingly difficult.. especially whenever your muse’s life is being threatened by another witch in the community. turns out that witch wants your muses’s power and their familiar, ollie.

* loren dixon.  ( jordan connor fc )  werewolf.  bisexual. : the alpha’s son, was born with the werewolf gene, stronger than bitten werewolves, has red eyes when he shifts,  his wolf form is grey with hints of black in his fur, his father had fallen in love with a witch but broke her heart, she cursed loren to have a human mate.  ( pinterest board. )

your muse is a human that lives secluded in the woods. your muse found loren  in wolf form wounded one morning while they were out for a walk. your muse took the wolf in and helped nurse it back to health. through that process loren sort of imprinted on your muse, finding out that they were their mate. loren just doesn’t know how to break it to your muse about what they are, so loren leaves in the middle of the night. they come back the next morning to introduce themselves to your muse in their human form. loren and your muse feel an attraction towards one another, but your muse can’t help but feel like loren is hiding something from them.

*  vincent crawford.  ( john boyega fc )  superhero.  bisexual. :  fire manipulation and flight, given the name “firebolt” by an online blogger, he’s a firefighter who became a vigilante whenever he decided he could do things that the law couldn’t,  he used to be incredibly close to his brother, his brother’s powers are paralysis shock and telepathy,  he has a team of friend’s back him ( think the flash or arrow ).   ( pinterest board. )  

- wanted plots / connections: 

your muse is also a superhero/vigilante. vincent and your muse usually stay on their respective sides of the city and try not to step on each other’s toes. however, when vincents’s brother decides to get together his own team of villainous characters, vincent has to go to your muse for help. they bicker with one another and it’s difficult to find their footing as a team but eventually they have to put their differences aside. 

your muse is part of vincent’s team as he can’t do this all on his own. they don’t have powers per se, but they bring an aspect to the team that makes vincent’s career as firebolt work. they could be a techie or a journalist that has insider information or a police officer or fellow firefighter. 

your muse is vincent’s brother, zachariah. they used to be incredibly close but whenever zach started his job at the city’s local newspaper he started to become power hungry. it didn’t take long for him to climb the social ladder. he’s got the belief that he’s superior because of his mutation/powers. as he gets together his team of morally corrupt mutants, he tries to persuade vincent to join him or threatens to make his life as a living hell. 

your muse could be part of zachariah’s team of mutants or work some side jobs for him here and there because they aren’t entirely convinced with his cause. we could go down the enemies to lovers trope.

[ cody christian / bisexual ] rey whiteshell is a new recruit of hellfire brought to atlantis due to the incredible potential he possesses. the twenty-three year old male hope agent is currently training for prometheus x and earned the callsign “cerberus”. despite being new to atlantis, they fare well by being assertive but trainers notice that they are held back by their distrusting attitude.

how did project MKHellfire find them?

again, i’m going to try to keep this as short as possible but let’s see how this goes. rey’s backstory is heavily inspired by the movie john wick so pls forgive me for being a nerd. and no, trust me, rey is not baba yaga, i can only wish i was that good of an action writer.

rey was five when it happened. thinking back on it, he came back inside after his cousins refused to play with him outside. at the time he didn’t know why they always chased him off. but it was because he was different than his cousins, wasn’t he? blonde hair and blue eyes and fair skin... why would anyone assume that his mother was native? with her richer skin and thick chestnut brown hair, it was strange to have such a different-looking boy cling to her when they went shopping. so, he watched movies on his overly saturated television. his mom was cooking when it happened. men pounded on the door. his mom told rey to hide. 

before he could, the men broke down the door. his mother fought against them at first, but when they grabbed hold of rey who just had too small legs, she submitted. the last thing he remembers about his mom was her calling out his name before a bag was put over both their heads. 

rey woke up in a large hotel bed in an even larger decorated, shiny room. the windows were open and rey could see nothing but city. he also met mister winston. he introduced himself as the owner of this hotel. rey had the gall to ask where his mother was. mister winston told him his mother unfortunately needed to pay for things that were long overdue.

“like when you need to pay for your candy.” mister winston smiled at rey’s words.

“yes, like when you need to pay for your candy. are you hungry for some breakfast?”

rey learned quickly not to ask about his mother. the hotel workers gave him the same answer. he also learned that the hotel workers would do anything he said and quickly became spoiled and pampered. but above anything, he learned that mister winston was the law. you always listened to mister winston.

as rey grew and he made that hotel room his home, rey discovered many things about the hotel. he learned that criminals, warlords, mercernaries, and discredited military officials made frequent visits to sort out deals and contracts. the hotel was a hub for the underworld, hidden discreetly amongst other clandestine hotel resorts. 

he also discovered his mother’s place in it all. his mother was well-versed in architecture, a collector of blue plans and maps of buildings. she invested herself into her work and soon, made her skills sellable to assassins and mobs to use for any of their contracts and missions through the hotel. she caught a dangerous man’s eye and the fire that sparked was both glorious and painful. and in an attempt to “get out” of such a crime-infested life (rey could only assume it was because of him), she hid. it wasn’t long until she was found and was forced to pay out debts that she had used to try and cut off ties from the hotel, and in extension, the criminal underground.

mister winston told him he didn’t give mercy to those who willingly stepped “into this cesspool, but you, my boy, you were born into it without a choice”. so, instead of rey being cast into the foster system, mister winston adopted him as his own son. 

fast forward to just turned legal: rey is a party animal, a star boy, a boss, and a serial killer. he started training to take contracts as soon as he found out his mother’s fate, quick to learn the how-to’s of assassination. he became a suave businessman, on the good side of many mob bosses. and just like his mother, he became obsessed with knowledge. instead of architecture, it was of... biological weapons.

fast forward once again: rey is in an cia interrogation room, awaiting instructions. he’s handcuffed to his chair. despite the compromising situation, rey feels totally in control. as mister winston walks into the room, a familiar face in a uniform standing guard, rey grins triumphantly.

“mister winston,” he says eagerly, “i can become a god. a god of unimaginable power. a god for the good of the hotel. i can be a god for you, father.”

and so, rey convinces mister winston to let the cia take him into custody. rey gives enough information to deem himself valuable but never enough to put mister winston in a bad situation. rey convinces the cia that he wants out for the good of himself. he wants out so badly that he’s willing to become mkhellfire’s property to do it.

do they get along with their teammates?

rey can convince many people of his intentions, but it doesn’t make him any less of a suspicious character. he has a hard time trusting other agents and in turn, makes other agents trust him less. he’s dangerous and charming, almost to the point of being sickening. it’s easy to play with him but it doesn’t make him an easy teammate. soon, you’ll get tired of his questioning, his mico-management, his self-proclaimed leadership, and he’ll get tired of most people (he gets bored of things quite easily). he has a soft spot for those surrounded by criminals just like him, but do with that what you will.

Mostly due to his bodyguard Theo Rieken who seems to alway have a perfect reason for Brett to get away with murder, literally.

“You know one day the Alphas are not going to play along with him.” Your boss called from the back of the restaurant you worked at.

“Humans shouldn’t get to try him. They’re afraid of him so it would make more sense for werewolves to attend werewolf trials.” You mumbled but he just scoffed.

“Yeah one more thing for them to take away from us.” He grumbled.

“We can’t hunt werewolves anymore… that’s like one of the only things that's changed.” You muttered and he nodded, glancing into the front of the restaurant as the last customers left.

“Yeah, some of us made a mint of hunting them.” He told you and your eyebrows shot up before you hummed, spotting the familiar mark of hunters on his arm. “You don’t mind looking up do you, my daughter's sick.”

“Yeah sure, I hope she gets better soon.” You called as he left.

After locking up the front you switched everything off, being sure to finish each room thoroughly before moving to the next. When you reached the very back room you jumped, the door was forced open and a group of people rushed in.

“You… you can’t be in here.” You muttered.

“I can be where I want little girl.” The one infront said in a condescending tone that forced you to grit your teeth.

“No, we’re closed you can’t come inside.” You insisted.

“I’m going to stay until a car comes for me, you call Theo get him to send a car for me.” The man turned to the people with him, before turning back to you. “Cook me food i’m hungry.”

“No, we’re closed.” You snapped firmly until he stared you down through his shades.

“You don’t know who I am do you little girl?” He said as he pulled off his shades. “I’m hungry.”

Your eyes widened when you met the golden gaze of none other than Brett Talbot, without thinking you hurried to make anything that could keep him from losing his temper.

He seemed happy with the sandwich and milkshake you made for him and ate as he listened to the two people he was with talk quietly, after a long time someone else came through the backdoor to tell Brett his car had arrived.

“Wait you have to pay for the food!” You objected as he started to leave, wishing you had kept quiet when he turned to look at you.

“I don’t have to pay for anything, have we not established who I am… would you like another reminder?” He offered and you shrank back.

“I’m sorry it’s just… the food comes out of my paycheck and… I might get fired if I tell him that I took it.” You muttered quietly and he cocked his head. “I’m guessing you won't want anyone to know you were here.”

“Pretty and smart, already grabbing for my wallet, if you weren’t some pathetic dinner girl i’d take you home with me.” Brett chuckled and reached him his pocket, handing you a huge roll of cash. “Keep the change, payment for whatever you did while we were here.”

He left and you had the furious feeling that came from being offended by someone dumber than you but you were in no position to say anything back.

“You’re late, but given what you said in your text last night, I can forgive you.” Your boss called as you dumped your coat and bag before hurrying to start taking orders.

“Hey little girl!” You heard and flinched, looking over to the corner booth. “You got something here that won't kill me.”

“Yeah, leaving.” You answered and continued to serve the plates coming out of the kitchen.

“No need to be rude.” He muttered, watching you through his ever present shades. “You should give me your number to make up for it.”

“No.” You said quickly. “Are you going to order any food?” You asked, tapping your pen on your notebook as you waited.

“Sure, what you made me last night and bring Theo a drink.” He motioned to the grumpy looking man opposite him.

“Right.” You sighed, writing down the order of what you had made last night and quickly explained to the chef what was going on.

By the time your shift was over Brett had almost been kicked out twice. He followed you to your car and you couldn’t help but turn and glower at him. “Come on little girl, your number?”

“No, just go away.” You sighed and he nodded.

“Alright I’ll leave but, i’ll get you number.” He chuckled as he walked to a huge SUV with blacked out windows and finally left.

“Are my sandwiches really so good that I have an infamous werewolf who i possibly a mob boss… stalking me?” You muttered to yourself and laughed at how ridiculous the thought was, frowning when you spotted a huge arrangement of flowers and a box of chocolates with Brett’s name written delicately on the box and wrapping.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND March 15, 2019  - WONDER PARK, CAPTIVE STATE, FIVE FEET APART

Since I’m writing quite a bit about the wide releases over at my regular gig at The Beat, I’m not sure what more I can say here.  Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is clearly going to be the victor here, but I’ve only seen one of the new wide releases.

Probably the strongest of the new offerings is Paramount’s WONDER PARK, an animated family film featuring the voices of Jennifer Garner, Mila Kunis, Kenan Thompson, Ken Jeong, Matthew Broderick, John Oliver and many more. It’s also the only animated movie ever to be made without a director – at least, there is none credited, which is never a good sign for a movie, as it generally means problems in production. Generally, kids won’t care about that and it looks like a fun premise with a lot of talking animals that I personally will never ever see.

The young adult romantic drama FIVE FEET APART, the latest from CBS Films, stars Cole Sprouse from Riverdale and Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and Haley Lu Richardson from Split and awesome movies like Support the Girls, The Edge of Seventeen and Operation Finale. This is a teen drama in the vein of Josh Boone’s The Fault In Her Stars to the point where I feel it might be a direct rip-off of it, but since I haven’t actually seen it, I’m going to assume that this is a romance between two young people who need to remain five feet apart, and I’m not sure you can even get to first base at that distance.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt returns with the sci-fi thriller CAPTIVE STATE (Focus Features), is the one movie of the weekend I did see, and that’s an interesting look at an alien incursion nine years after they’ve arrived. It takes place in Chicago and has an interesting cast that includes John Goodman, Vera Farmiga, Ashton Sanders and many more, and it’s a much slower cerebral affair than the typical alien invasion movie, one more dealing with an underground human rebellion wanting to take it to the aliens and their human government allies.

Mini-Review: I was definitely intrigued by the premise for this sci-fi thriller since I’ve always found Rupert Wyatt to be a thoughtful and intelligent filmmaker, and this was something he conceived with his wife and co-writer Erica Beeney.

It starts with an alien invasion that’s shown in a rather quizzical way where we don’t exactly know what’s happening, but over the opening title credits, we get a lot of information about the alien incursion and how it affected the people of earth. The story is focused on Chicago nine years after the invasion with part of the city declared a Closed Area which the aliens have taken over as their own.

John Goodman plays a police detective who is trying to track down the mysterious “Phoenix” who is leading the rebellion against the aliens, while Ashton Sanders is a young man whose parents were killed by the alien invaders with his older brother missing. How these two will be brought together is part of what keeps the movie compelling, but Wyatt doesn’t go out of his way to make clear exactly what is happening or how the aliens affected those in the city. That’s stuff you learn as the film goes along, and it makes Captive State more of a challenging sci-fi films rather than the typical action movie in which the humans fight against CG aliens (ala Starship Troopers and Battle L.A.)

The casting is particularly interesting since it’s been a long time since we’ve seen John Goodman in anything close to a leading role, even though he used to do plenty of them in the ‘80s and ‘90s. (Who could forget Arachnophobia?) I also thought Ashton Sanders was much better in this than he was in Moonlight, where I thought his segment really suffered. It’s clear that he’s improved greatly as an actor, and he does decently as the film’s lynchpin to which audiences can relate. Personally, I love Vera Farmiga, and I wish there was more of her in the movie, but her role is one of the film’s bigger twists, so it makes sense that she doesn’t appear more.

It’s pretty obvious that (despite the way it’s being marketed) Captive State is not meant as science fiction film for the masses, but rather, one meant for dedicated sci-fi fans who read novels and want to be challenged intellectually. It may take a good hour before you can get into what Wyatt was trying to do, but he’s created a strong movie about revolting against oppression during a time when many are being oppressed on a daily basis, so in that regards, it’s fairly timely. Rating: 7/10

Lionsgate’s LatinX subsidiary Pantelion Films will release NO MANCHES FRIDA 2, the sequel to the 2016 comedy hit, which grossed about $11.5 million without ever being in more than 500 theaters. I never saw the original so I’ll probably never see this one, and we might as well just go straight to the…

LIMITED RELEASES

There are a few decent movies in select cities this weekend including Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s directorial debut THE MUSTANG (Focus Features), starring Matthias Schoenaerts as Roman, a convict in a Nevada prison with anger issues who tries to escape his violent past by joining the prison’s horse-training program. Led by Bruce Dern and bonding with a fellow inmate played by Jason Mitchell, Roman quickly takes to his horse and uses the bonding experience. This was a really wonderful movie, and it’s a shame that it didn’t come out last year with the other wonderful horse movies, Chloe Zhao’s The Rider and Lean on Pete, as it would have fit right in. But this also has the element of redemption and growth that I appreciate from modern-day prison movies, and this joins Shot Caller and O.G.as some of the better prison-related character dramas.  Exec. produced by Robert Redford, the movie will open in New York and L.A. this weekend and hopefully it will expand later. Good news! I just learned that Focus plans on expanding the movie nationwide (probably a couple hundred theaters) on March 29!

Another movie I quite enjoyed for reasons I’ll explain is the historical drama THE AFTERMATH (Fox Searchlight), directed by James Kent (Testament of Youth) and starring Jason Clarke and Keira Knightley as Col. Lewis and Rachel Morgan, a British officer and his wife who have moved into a luxurious mansion in Hamburg, Germany following WWII. The mansion is owned by a German widower, played by Alexander Skarsgard, who they allow to remain there with his daughter. As Lewis is pulled further and further into his work to uncover Nazi rebels, Rachel gets closer to the owner of the house. So yes, this is a fairly typical WWII drama similar to ohers Knigthley has done before, but I was particularly interested in it, since my father was born in Hamburg, and I had gone back there to see his childhood home, which had been rebuilt after being bombed in the British air raids. So I had this connection, but then I generally love Knightley and like Skarsgard anyway, and they were quite good in the film, which deals with the personal lives of these people while also dealing with the bigger story of the Germans and British trying to recover after a brutal war that left many dead. In other words, this is totally my kind of movie, and if it’s something that sounds interesting, it will open in select cities on Friday. 

My Interview with James Kent

Fresh off his “Saturday Night Live” debut, Idris Elba makes his directorial debut with YARDIE (Rialto Pictures), a movie set in ‘70s Kingston Jamaica and 19802 Hackney (a Jamaican community in London)that’s based on the novel by Victor Headley. It centers around the world of Jamaican narcotics syndicates and a courier named D (Aml Ameen from The Maze Runner) who wants revenge for his brother’s murder.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Chinese auteur Jia Zhang-Ke, but oddly, I really liked his new movie ASH IS PUREST WHITE (Cohen Media) when it played at the New York Film Festival last year. It’s more of a crime film ala the work of Johnny To looking at the jianghu gangs within a small mining town and the relationship between a mob boss and his wife, played by Lao Fin and Zhao Tao. It’s a really good film from China that’s especially memorable for the transformative performance by Zhao Tao as the film covers many decades in her life. The movie will open in New York, L.A. and San Francisco this weekend.

Opening at the Film Forum Wednesday is REZO, a wonderful Russian animated doc by Leo Gabriadze about his father, filmmaker and puppeteer Rezo Gabriadze, that’s exec. producer by Russia’ Michael Bay, Timur Bekmambetov. In the film, Rezo talks about his interesting life after WWII when the family takes in a German POW, much to the ire of his father, but the stories are told in entertaining ways with quirky animation to illustrate them, and I ended up enjoying this more than I thought I would. The film is being shown with the Russian animated short Tale of Tales by Yuri Norstein, which is definitely a strange one, having been made in 1979 but not really appearing on the film festival circuit until 2002, as Norstein was caught behind the Wall of Communism and unable to travel to receive the awards the film received.

An odd release by Warner Bros is the sort-of-sequel Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, which normally would be straight to home entertainment but is actually getting a substantial theatrical release. Unlike the 2007 Nancy Drew, which starred a young(er) Emma Roberts in the title role, this one stars Sophia Lillis (Beverly from 2017’s Itmovie) and is directed by ‘80s and ‘90s genre filmmaker Katt Shea (Poison Ivy), so it should be an interesting bit of counter-programming for younger girls. Again, I have no idea how many theaters this will be in, as I’ve heard NADA about this from my Warner Bros. contacts, but hey, if you’re a fan of the character it’s another option.

I’m really interested in the Western Never Grow Old (Lionsgate/Saban Films), starring Emile Hirsch and John Cusack, mainly because I loved director Ivan Kavanagh’s earlier horror film The Canal. The film takes place in the frontier town of Garlow when a vicious Dutch outlaw (Cusack) arrives with his gang, and the local undertaker (Hirsch) has to decide whether to keep taking the blood money from burying their victims or do something about it. I expect this will get the usual Saban limited release but mainly be seen on VOD.

Hey, look! Alexander Skarsgard is in ANOTHER movie this weekend! The Hummingbird Project (The Orchard) from Canadian director Kim Nguyen (War Witch) stars Skarsgard and Jesse Eisenberg as New York cousins playing the high-stakes game of High-Frequency Trading who want to build a fire optic line between Kansas and New Jersey. It also stars Salma Hayek as their old boss who wants to stop the duo from making millions. Again, select cities and VOD.

Daredevil and Ghost Rider director Mark Steven Johnson returns with Finding Steve McQueen (not to be confused with the recent digital release Chasing Bullitt), starring Travis Fimmel, Rachael Taylor, William Fichtner, Lily Rabe and Forest Whitaker. It’s about a gang of thieves looking to steal $30 million in illegal campaign contributions to President Richard Nixon who become the subjects of an FBI manhunt. It opens in select theaters as well as On Demand.

Netflix is giving The Blind Side director John Lee Hancock’s Highwaymen, starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as the Texas Rangers who brought down Bonnie and Clyde, a release into select theaters on Friday before its streaming debut on March 29. Like last week’s Triple Frontier, I haven’t seen the movie yet, though I hope to see it before its streaming release. We’ll see if that happens.

Marc Cousins’ doc The Eyes of Orson Welles will open at the IFC Center on Friday, as Cousins was given unprecedented access to some of Welles’ sketches, paintings and drawings to help learn more about the enigmatic filmmaker’s inner life.

Opening at the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklynthis Friday and at the Landmark Nuartin L.A. on Friday 22 is Yann Gonzalez’s trashy sexploitation movie Knife + Heart, which premiered at Fantastic Fest last September. The former Mrs. Johnny Depp Vanessa Paradis plays Ann, a woman whose relationship with her editor (Kate Moran) is over just as someone is going around killing the actors in her low-budget gay porn production company. So she puts the murders into her new film “Homo-cide.”

REPERTORY

METROGRAPH (NYC):

This Friday, the Metrograph will open a restoration of the late Nietzchka Keene’s 1990 directorial debut The Juniper Tree (Arbelos Films), starring pop superstar Bjork while she was 21 and still a part of the Icelandic group The Sugarcubes. She plays a young woman on the run with her sister from persecutors who killed their mother as a witch. This week’s Late Nites at Metrographoffering is Catherine Breillat’s 2001 film Fat Girl, a fantastic drama worth seeing. Playtime: Family Matineesis going with Ishiro Honda’s 1954 monster movie classic… go-go-Godzilla! That will play on Saturday and Sunday at 11AM, and I will definitely be at one of those shows. (I guess the Metrograph are also showing The Last Unicornone more time since it did so well last weekend.

THE NEW BEVERLY  (L.A.):

Tarantino’s repertory theater has another amazing and varied week beginning with Joan Crawford’sMildred Pierce  (1945) on Wednesday, then double features of Cliff Robertson’s  J.W. Coop (1971) and Patrick Murphy’s 1972 thriller Riding Tall on Weds. and Thursday, Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (1975) and Carl Reiner’s 1982 comedy Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, starring Steve Martin, on Friday and Saturday, and then Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959) and John Wayne’s The Quiet Man  (1952) on Sunday and Monday. This weekend’s midnight offerings are Tarantino’s own Kill Bill Vol. 1  (2004) on Friday night and the 1976 comedyTunnel Vision, starring Chevy Chase, John Candy, Larraine Newman and more on Saturday night. The weekend’s Kiddee Matinee is George Miller’s 1982 filmThe Man from Snowy River, starring Kirk Douglas, while the 1999 survival thriller Ravenous will screen on Monday. Tuesday night’s Grindhouse double feature is The Slumber Party Massacre  (1982) and Sorority House Massacre  (1986).

FILM FORUM (NYC):

Bob & Wray: A Hollywood Love Story starts this Friday and running through April 2, looking at the films of married couple, screenwriter Rob Riskin and actor Fay Wray. It kicks off Friday with a double feature of Frank Capra’s 1934 film It Happened One Night, written by Riskin, and It Happened in Hollywood starring Wray. Friday will be a screening of The Wedding March (1928) introduced by Victoria Riskin (with live piano accompaniment). Saturday sees a double feature of King Kong with It Happened One Night, and then Sunday and Monday sees a double feature of Frank Capra’s Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and Platinum Blonde (1931), which I might go see. This weekend’s Film Forum Jr. is Frank Capra’s 1937 film Lost Horizon, which was also adapted by Riskin. (In theory, one could do a Frank Capra TRIPLE feature on Sunday.)

EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):

The American Cinematique’s rep theater is screening Norman Jewison’s Oscar-winning 1967 film In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier, as part of the Greg Proops Film Club Podcast. The theater is also kicking off an Alex Cox retrospective (with Cox in person) including double features of Highway Patrolman (1991) and Walker  (1987) on Friday, and my personal favorite Repo Man  (1984) with Cox’s new film Tombstone Rashomon on Saturday. On Sunday, the theater will present the St. Patrick Swayze Day double featureRoad House  (1989) and Point Break (1991).

AERO  (LA):

Meanwhile, at the American Cinematique’s other theater, they’re doing a series of 3-D Favorites, including Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder  (1954) and The Glass Web (1953) on Thursday, Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), starring the late Julie Adams (with her son introducing the film) on Saturday. Also, Jean-Luc Godard’s 2014 film Goodbye to Languagewill screen Saturday, and then Sunday will be a special presentation of Walt Disney Animation Studios: Immersive Storytelling through 3-D Cinematography. Wrapping up the Hitchcock, Truffaut and Jones series with Kent Jones’s doc Hitchcock/Truffaut (see? I was right!!!) and Hitchcock’s 1942 movie Saboteur.

QUAD CINEMA (NYC):

The Quad is finishing up its Amour or Less: A Blier Buffet series in time for the new restoration of Blier’s 1978 film Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (Cohen Film), as well as showing Blier’s 1983 rom-com My Best Friend’s Girl on Thursday and Friday nights.

IFC CENTER (NYC)

This weekends offerings are: Waverly Midnights: The Feds  presents Mike Newell’s 1997 crime-comedy Donnie Brasco, starring Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. Weekend Classics: Early Godard takes another weekend off but the weekend’s Late Night Favorites is Bruce Willis’ Die Hard, as well as David Lynch’s Eraserhead and once again... Ridley Scott’s Alien.

MOMA (NYC):

This week’s Modern Matinees: B is for Bacallofferings are 1948’s Key Largoon Weds, Young Man with a Horn (1950) on Thursday and Sidney Lumet’s 1974 Murder on the Orient Expresson Friday. (I might actually go see the latter, so if you go, come over and say “Hi!”) William Fox Presents More Restorations and Rediscoveries from the Fox Film Corporation continues with John Ford’s 1926 movie 3 Bad Men and 1931’s Quick MIllions on Wednesday, While New York Sleeps (1920) and John Ford’s Riley the Cop (1928) on Thursday and much more running through the weekend.

MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE (NYC):

On Saturday, MOMI is showing Creature of the Black Lagoon with a post-screening conversation with Mallory O’Meara who wrote The Lady from the Black Lagoonand my pal Grady Hendrix. Saturday also begins a Tribute to Bruno Ganz, the late Swiss actor with screenings of Wim Wenders’ The American Friend  (1977) on Saturday and Sunday, as well as Wnders’ Wings of Desire(1987) on Sunday.

LANDMARK THEATRES NUART  (LA):

This Friday’s midnight offering is Sam Raimi’s 1987 horror classic Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, starring Bruce Campbell.

STREAMING AND CABLE

I still haven’t seen J.C. Chandor’s TRIPLE FRONTIER (thanks a lot, Netflix!), but the heist thriller, written by Oscar winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund and Charlie Hunnam as a group of special ops soldiers planning a heist, and it’s already on the streaming network. I’ve actually seen TV commercials for it, but it looks like I’ll have to watch this on my tiny television rather than in theater, which is a bummer since it looks like a good big screen movie. (Maybe Spielberg is right?) This Friday, the streaming network will also be debuting the fifth and final season of Arrested Development … but does anyone even care anymore? Netflix will also premiere the first season of Turn Up Charlie starring Idris Elba (he’s just everywhere!) as a struggling DJ.

I haven’t had a chance to watch Alex Gibney’s The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley yet, but it will premiere on HBO on Monday, and on Sunday, Showtime will present the new season of Billions, another show that I haven’t watched yet, but they shot some stuff for the new season on my block!

Next week’s big new release is Jordan Peele’s horror film Us, starring Lupita Nyong’o, which will hope to continue the success the filmmaker had with 2017’s Get Out.
