well, i guess i'm as winter storm ready as i can be !
i clocked out of work for a bit to go run the errands i normally do on fridays because tomorrow we're supposed to get a few actual inches of snow (we'll see !!) so that was..... exhausting to do in the middle of a work day (and right before a snowstorm in the south... the traffic....) but it's all done !!
i've gotta work a couple of hours tomorrow because i ended up taking longer than i meant to (mostly because of the traffic) but hopefully i can get up and get that done before there's any possibility of even losing power so fingers crossed !
hope you're safe out there if you're reading this and stay warm/safe if this shit's about to hit you as well !! <3
#i had to go to not one but TWO pharmacies as part of my errand run#walgreens to get some more toradol for what i'm pretty sure is another goddamn kidney stone#(that keeps having this on and off pain that's been going on since at least thanksgiving if not earlier so....#we've probably got another stuck one and i can't even begin to fucking think about it#i do have an appointment with my pcp on monday tho so hopefully we can figure out what's going on)#and costco to get my regular meds#i also made the mistake of getting to costco right about the time everyone was getting off work and just...oh my god#to be fair i've seen it worse but i had also just left the grocery store so like...ahhhhhhh#also part of the reason it took me so long to even get there was because i also took the trash off#and we finally got a new water heater (yaaay!!! i missed enjoying showers) but that meant i had to break down the box it came in (booo!!)#so that took goddamn forever#i even worked on it during my lunch break just so i'd hopefully speed up the process but nope !! not really !!#but it's done#and all the trash is taken off#and i've got food#we've got a grill and some propane and propane accessories#and mom got the fireplace cleaned out and we've got some wood#i'm gonna charge my portable batteries tonight and fingers crossed we don't end up needing any of it#and it's just a nice snowy day !!#anyway after that little trip to overstimulation city and feeling like i haven't stopped moving for several hours now#i'm gonna go unplug my brain !!#:3

College Tips for Neurodivergence and Chronic Illness
Hey Everyone!I just wanted to talk for a minute about the stuff that I do to make college slightly easier to get through, and ask around for if anyone else has any advice.
Physically going to class:
1. Physical Calmness: Make a small physical maintenance travel bag that you carry with you EVERYWHERE. Include things like moisturizer, chapstick, cough drops/sucking candy, nail clippers, hair ties, eye drops, pain relief meds, sunglasses- anything that you frequently need to maintain you and your body’s ability to be calm. Sensory overload frequently becomes a thing on campus, and frequently overstimming on campus can make it really hard to want to go to class every day. I carry 6 ponytails, 2 chapstick, 4 advil, 4 sucking candies, 2 tampons, emergency ear plugs and earphones, gloves, moisturizer and sunglasses every day and I swear they make the difference between wanting to run crying out of my classroom and being able to hold on some days.
2. Make Checklists: Especially if you deal with executive function issues (like me!) you can build checklists for every day, repetitive tasks as well as normal to-dos to help you manage everything at once without forgetting anything. Don’t feel obliged to make the list pretty or perfect, just keep adding and refining the lists as you notice stuff you’ve forgotten or usually do. Write lists for literally everything. There is no shame to writing everything down. That being said, if you end up scheduling your days, always leave yourself an hour or two a day and like 10-15 minutes before crucial junctures so you aren’t stressed about running late and can actually unwind sometimes.
3. Eat: Some people will have meal plans, some will cook at home and bring stuff to school, but it’s absolutely fucking critical to chemical homeostasis (especially if you do what I do and wind up in class from like 10 am to 7 pm) to plan when and what you’ll eat- either by scheduling adequate meal breaks to go buy it, or packing it ahead of time. This is when lists can help: I remember to pack my lunch and snacks every morning or prep food for consumption when I get home only because I leave it on sticky notes on my phone when I go to sleep. Just drinking coffee nearly made me have an anxiety related melt down my freshman year before I realized that the constant feelings of a racing heart were only partially because of anxiety and were also because of the sheer amount of caffeine in my system. Eating healthy is also important, and will make you feel even better than just eating, but now is not the time to put yourself on a starvation diet just to lose 10 lbs. Eating high protein has helped some of my snacky issues as well as generally gives me more energy, and making my own mealprep at home- even my own muffins and cookies- generally are more healthy for my than what I get in the store. Fruit, cheese, lunch meat (or sliced cooked meat) and pickles or olives in endless combination work great for me as mindless snacky food, as does homemade popcorn (either in a skillet or costco bags) because it’s dirt cheap and you can put anything from seasoning salt to furikake and shredded dried pork on it. If you need help figuring out recipes, feel free to pm me! I’m good at working with nutritional and budgetary restraints. Pancakes are kind of a universal good.
4. Give yourself permission to leave: If you’re triggered, or seconds away from panic, GET UP AND LEAVE. College classes are not the same as high school classes, and most teachers are perfectly fine with you getting up to get water, or go to the bathroom, or cry in the bathroom. Try to make sure you go back to class most of the time, but if you’re really that stressed, also give yourself permission to leave.
5. Find a backup note system: There will be days that you cannot go to class. Accept this. Therefore, it is critical to find a way to make sure you always get the notes. Some colleges offer note taking assistance, some allow you to audio record lectures (check 1 and 2 party consent states first), and some leave you to your own devices, in which case, make a casual buddy to get notes from. You do not need to be besties with this person, Try to make sure you know how many days you actually have to go, and minimize grade damage when you can’t.
6. GET ENOUGH SLEEP. I cannot emphasize this enough; whether or not you’re taking medication, getting enough sleep is critical to pretty much everything that might be going on in your head- hormone issues, depression, autism, whatever. Your brain is going to be stressed out by the new environment and the additional, new problem solving that it has to do; help it make its best decisions. I literally wake up on less than 7 hours of sleep and consider selling my siblings on the black market. Don’t do it.
7. Be careful about Caffeine; Some people are more or less sensitive to caffeine, or forms of caffeine, don’t develop a coffee addiction just because it’s in vogue. Matcha seems to have the most stabilizing caffeine affect on my brain of all the caffeine options, though tea still works universally better than coffee. I also make my own “lattes” and cold brew at the beginning of the week and keep them in my fridge; a 2oz jar of matcha powder may cost like 60$ but it will make me about 90 cups of tea and last me two semesters especially if I mix in other kinds of cheaper teas in my morning; it’s certainly cheaper than starbucks- cups of latte come out to 95c and have about a third of the calories (which means I can drink more of them!) Which ties into;
8. Budgetting. You might be stressed out about money or make tons of tables and charts to try to deal with that stress; there are a lot of ways to cope with it, but my favorite method (and I still use a combination of these) for dealing with food and consumable stuff you need regularly like shampoo and soap or socks are: separate that money from everything else that you need to buy, then at the beginning of a semester
Go to Costco, a particular kind of “exotic” grocery store, or a farmers market. Buy and then freeze meat, vegetables, and fruit (if you use them in baked goods or in yogurt) or get prefrozen meat- make sure you’re checking the price/lb or K for the cheapest, and bags of either rice, flour, boxes of pasta (cheap carbs) and oil- i recommend having canola, it’s utilitarian for frying with a high flash point. If your budget isn’t tiny, this is a great time to also get dried (or canned but I don’t like the texture) beans, and canned meat or sauce if you actually eat it. The key is to get cheap bulk things that will last for a semester or five, and that are always on hand.
Take the rest of your food budget out in cash. Separate it into bundles for “each week”, put them in your wallet, and return the change to the jar when you’re done. It was always easier for me to visualize how much spending money for food that I had when I physically had the cash; it meant I didn’t overspend and it also meant that I started making better “investment” decisions; I’d buy cinnamon sticks one week, or good olive oil the next, instead of dropping a couple hundred dollars on ingredients I might have never used.
Do a similar bulk buy of products you know you use, and then leave the rest of that money- also in cash!- in a separate jar with a stickynote on top. When you have to use money for stuff from it, just stuff the receipt in the jar with the cash and do your accounting When You Have Brainspace.
I deal with other bigger accounting stuff over cards, but I try to limit one card to rent, insurance, school payments, big regular stuff that I autopay and always pay off, and one card to “emergency” stuff that I’m always working on paying off- think emergency dental work, car broke, etc. That one I do gig labor to cover when I can.
Anyone else, feel free to chime in! It’s super useful to have lists of tips and tricks!

A Very Important Episode starring Hisoka
Or the one where Hisoka learns Bungee Gum is not a food group.
A/N: We all know that Hisoka likes candy and Bungee Gum but we would like to encourage Hisoka to make healthier choices and prevent diabetes complications. There will possibly be a part 2. I hope this is educational.
---
This time Hisoka had actually done it. He’d actually managed to fuck up his entire body beyond what he could repair with Bungee Gum or Machi’s services - which she was charging higher and higher for - and now he was somewhere almost unthinkable - an emergency room.
“Illumi~~~~” he half-sang, half-whined now that he was finally lucid, after undergoing an exploratory laparotomy to stabilize his profuse internal bleeding - the surgeons had been in awe of just how much of his body had been purely synthetic due to Texture Surprise exclaiming that he’d be an incredible case to write up - and being amped up full of pain meds. He probably didn’t need the pain meds, but it was fun to go in and out of consciousness; he couldn’t remember the last time he had an actual night of sleep.
His unwilling friend sat at the side of his hospital bed, legs crossed and focusing his jarringly large, black eyes at the fluid and blood that was being transfused into him by IV drip. A small part of him was surprised that Hisoka could be transfused with regular looking blood and regular looking fluid. He was almost sure that he was made up purely of nonsense and Bungee Gum.
“Illumi~” Hisoka moaned dramatically a second time. His gaze slid now to him, with lips pressed into a flat line of distaste.
“Don’t ever use my name as your emergency contact again.”
Illumi had to hide the fact that he was impressed Hisoka could spell clearly enough to make out the letters of his name and had actually retained his phone number. He had been surprised to get a call, but made his way over as soon as he had finished gutting an enemy and stringing them up for display as requested in his latest contract. The idea of Hisoka being dead was incredibly alarming, for he did enjoy his health and company, but also sparked a morbid curiosity in him. Could Hisoka actually die?
“But you came, didn’t you?” Hisoka teased, with a shit-eating grin.
He had him there.
There was a soft knocking on the door, and a young woman in a white coat, followed by a taller man wearing a pair of scrubs came in. The young woman glanced at Hisoka and then Illumi, visibly wincing at the hard stare of the latter in the semi-dark room, then raised her badge to introduce herself.
“H-hello, I’m Dr. Rhgyl, I-” her eyes flickered to Illumi briefly, unsettled by the fact that he hadn’t yet blinked in the past two minutes, then shifted back to Hisoka, whose devilish smile was almost more unsettling. “I was one of your surgeons and am here to answer any questions you have.”
She turned to Illumi, and gave a nervous nod of the head. “And who is in the room with you, Mr. Morow?”
“My husband,” he said, in a sickly-sweet voice. Illumi gave him a glare, then crossed his arms.
“Sure,” was all he said.
Sure, what? What is sure? Just answer the damn question... The poor young doctor’s face fell as she already knew this was something she’d have to spend unnecessary minutes during her already excessively long call night clarifying in her documentation. She turned to her nurse behind her, who gave her a small shrug.
“So uh, Mr. Morow, how is your pain?”
“It’s wonderful!”
The doctor again tried to conceal her internal screaming, and continued to keep her professional smile plastered on her face. “In that case, please let us know if you have any more pain, and your nurse will take care of it.”
“We do have one other issue, however, “ she added, making sure to communicate this next part as clearly and effectively as possible. Hisoka perked up in surprise, and Illumi continued to sit perfectly still, as still as a statue. “Your blood sugar. Your blood sugar was extremely elevated, and we were concerned about a diagnosis of prediabetes or diabetes.”
“Diabetes?”
“We expect you to make a fast recovery… surprisingly fast in fact, but we would still like you to follow up with a primary care doctor about your blood sugar. We’ll draw a lab test to check how your sugars were for the past 3 months, called a Hemoglobin A1c test, and then we’ll have your primary care doctor follow up the results and help you with strategies to have better control.”
Illumi turned to Hisoka, who he could tell that whatever the medical team was telling him was going in one ear and out the other, and he was now only thinking about either his next fight or Bungee Gum based on the elated smile on his face.
Bungee Gum.
Bungee Gum was the fucking problem.
As the doctor and the nurse finally exited out of the room and Hisoka went back to telling Illumi battle stories, Illumi started to clear his schedule in his head, to figure out when he could best drag Hisoka to his follow-up appointments, which he would have to make for him. Someone had to be the adult in this relationship.
---
Hisoka’s new primary care doctor, another similarly young woman, but less easily intimidated as the tired one from the hospital sat at a computer, pulling up his chart to review his lab results from his hospitalization.
Illumi and Hisoka noticed how she visibly paled as she scrolled, then turned to Hisoka and gave him a reassuring smile, that looked to reassure her more than them.
“What is it? Am I dead?” Hisoka asked. Illumi gave him a look to quiet down.
“Well, you’re diabetic, all right... Your A1c is 14%.”
“Is that bad?”
She swiveled in her chair to face him, hands in her lap.
“Well, diabetes is diagnosed at an A1c of 7%. So... unfortunately, yes.”
Hisoka started counting on his fingers and Illumi forcefully put his hand down.
“Hisoka, listen to the doctor. Diabetes is serious. My great-grandaunt was diabetic.” Illumi said in an even, impassive voice.
“Oh, how old was she when she was diagnosed?” The doctor asked, attempting to build rapport with the patient and the patient’s loved ones.
Without skipping a beat, he replied, “206, exactly. She loved nothing more than to unwind with Mountain Dew after her assassination missions. She ended up on dialysis.”
The doctor seemed to be at a loss of words briefly, so she turned back to Hisoka, pulling out a pen and a notepad to focus on rather than lose her cool.
“So, uh… let’s start by talking a little about what you usually eat,” she began. “What do you eat in a typical day?”
“Hm... “ Hisoka didn’t usually keep track of what he ate, so it took him some time to come up with an account. “Ah! Okay, so in the morning, I usually skip breakfast, but sometimes I’ll have some Bungee Gum.”
Odd choice, the physician thought, but she nodded and wrote that down, allowing the floor to Hisoka to speak.
“For lunch, I try not to eat too much, but I also have a couple pieces or ten of Bungee Gum.”
Hm…
“Oh and for dinner, I have a bowl of gummy candy if I’m feeling particularly peckish and also Bungee Gum.”
She looked up from her pad and paper to see Hisoka looking blissfully unaware that he had just revealed that he subsists solely on sweets. She suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to pull at her hair repeatedly. This would be a ton of education, and she still wasn’t exactly sure what exactly Bungee Gum was.
---
Illumi parked his custom Ferrari minivan, purchased entirely for this shopping trip, outside the Costco Wholesale, and gave Hisoka, a long, hard look.
“Do you have the list?” Illumi asked, hand outstretched as Hisoka handed over a partially crumpled sheet of paper, outlining the basics of a balanced, carbohydrate-controlled diet for people with diabetes.
Hisoka looked outside to the large building, then looked back at Illumi. “Isn’t this for families? I thought we were shopping for me only, and sometimes you when you come over.”
“I don’t know, the butlers told me that they come here to stock the kitchens. It seems from the website that this store provides high quality bulk goods for very competitive prices so this will be an appropriate next stop.”
This was just one out of countless stops today - Hisoka had spent the earlier part of the day searching frantically for sugar-free Bungee Gum in every supermarket in a 25-mile radius unsuccessfully, and demanding to see the manager every time, only to kill them when they told him they didn’t have his particular brand. Illumi warned him that there would be no such shenanigans any longer.
They stepped out of the car and walked right past the door greeter who was waiting eagerly for them to present their membership card only to recoil once they both turned to look at him in unison with intent to kill.
The first things Hisoka noticed as he walked in were the multiple little free sample kiosks at the aisles every so often and curiously wandered over to them.
“Make sure to avoid anything glazed or with a sauce,” Illumi called after him, poring through the list as he wandered over to the produce aisle. He didn’t understand the draw of free samples; if he wanted to try something, he would simply buy it.
Hisoka made his way to Illumi and Illumi’s overfilled grocery cart about a half-hour later after wandering the entire store, arms filled with small paper cups and tasting spoons. It was clear that he had sampled literally everything, possibly twice or thrice. Illumi let out a sigh and moved to the front of the store to check out.
Keeping Hisoka’s blood sugar low would be a daunting task, but he was determined that by the next visit to his PCP, he’d have some improvement in his A1c. Texture Surprise can only replace so many amputated limbs at once. He’d just have to buy every supermarket’s supply of Bungee Gum and possibly halt every single production chain devoted to it or something similar. A pain, but it was worth it. Hisoka was annoying as all hell, but still, he was worth it.

craving Jeon.. .
For those of you who know me, I’m not a pancake/waffle/crepe kinda girl. At least not the Western kinds that are typically served as breakfast/brunch food.
However, Asian savoury ‘pancakes’ seem to be ok for me. I also like the hotteok, which is the Korean brown sugar-filled “pancake” that’s a popular street food. Anyway, I really craved some jeon (Korean pancakes) today, so I made some. .. with many modifications lol YOLO!

1 clove garlic + leftover carrot (it was like maybe 2 inches in length... of a regular carrot?)

This is a new-ish thing for me. It is from Costco, & I’ve eaten it a few times bcos my mom added it to congee & have used it in stirfry after draining out the water.

It looks like this. Does anyone use the liquid for anything??? We have never used it.. . we just don’t know what to do with it. It’s not like it’s broth o_O

Tempura powder!

Roughly 3 tbsp all-purpose flour with equal amount of the tempura powder.

I added in ~1/3 of the chicken that was in the can.

“Crush” the chicken & mix! I did not add any water yet.

This thing with adding water AFTER all the ingredients are mixed together. .. I think it’s only me haha bcos I don’t do measurements, as you are well-aware. Why do the powders/flour + water first, then having to either add more flour or water later when you can adjust slowly as you go (by adding small amounts of water bit by bit till you get the right consistency)? It makes more sense to me, you know? Anyway, that’s how I did it, & it worked.

Added black pepper + some tamarind soup mix, just bcos. I didn’t know if the tempura powder is flavoured or not, but the chicken breast does contain salt (& is kinda salty). So I didn’t add salt in.

Just a sprinkle of the tamarind powder.

Heat up a frying pan; add a little bit of oil + salt. My mom learnt this thing on Youtube, where the Youtuber said if you add salt in your frying pan to start with, it can prevent sticking? I don’t know if there’s scientific truth behind this.. . I think it also depends on what pan you have/are using. But a little salt here ain’t gonna hurt so I just dusted some onto the pan.

Scoop mixture onto pan; pan-fry each side on high->med heat for about 4-5mins. I flattened mine quite a bit so that it wouldn’t take too long.

They’re golden :D

My ‘recipe’ makes 6 of these jeons, each measuring ~3.5in in diameter. Flavour was good. As expected, the chicken was actually the major contributor of the savouriness. The pepper + tamarind was barely existent, so next time, I think I’m gonna add more of the tamarind soup mix. & maybe some chili powder too. Oh the possibilities! The texture was good (for me, anyway). It’s not “pancake-y”, nor was it like tempura crunchy. The edges were quite crisp, so I thought that was nice. I was ok without dipping sauce, but I think most ppl would prefer to have some sort of dipping sauce, whether it’s soy sauce or hot sauce or ketchup.
Okay, bye now!

Medical School/Podiatry School Life Tips
I’m going to do a different post for study tips but this is a post on how to survive during med school! It’s very hectic and can’t really be compared to any other experience but it is doable if this is what you are passionate about.
1. Have a workout routine
Whether you workout already or not, it is so important for your health to move. You are going to be sitting for hours during lectures and studying so having a protected time to move is essential for overall health. Find something you enjoy doing so you don’t dread it and make a commitment to yourself about how often you want to workout. For me personally I workout 5 days a week for about an hour and so I have 2 rest days. I like to put 1 rest day the day before an exam because I like the extra time to study and I put the other rest day on a weekend day so I can be lazy. I like that it is flexible - if I have 2 exams in 1 week then I use them both the day before each exam. Keep a schedule and stick to it.
Being in medical school I heard some professors say that since you are going to be in the medical profession and keeping patients healthy, it is important to keep yourself healthy too. I agree with this 100% - how can you tell a patient they need to exercise regularly and eat healthy when you don’t?
I also found that when I started exercising, my GPA was actually better that semester. I believe that getting up, moving, and taking a break from what you are studying is truly beneficial to absorb more information when you go back to studying.
2. Take care of your personal hygiene
a) brush your teeth - I can’t tell you how NASTY it is to sit next to someone during the test who clearly has not brushed their teeth. It takes 2 min max and makes the world of a difference. Especially if you have coffee breath after staying up all night cramming for the test. This stench is often mixed with the next -
b) shower regularly - there are so many guys at my school that stink like BO. I don’t know what it is but shower and put on deodorant please. If it’s summer and hot so you sweat a lot shower a couple times a day to rinse your body. Believe me, people smell you.
c) Have a skin care routine - when I am stressed I break out like CRAZY. If this doesn’t happen to you, you are blessed but please take care of the skin you’re in. At least use a cleanser in the morning and night (+ after you do #1 and workout regularly). Also, it never hurts to treat yourself to a mask every once in awhile.
d) Wash your lab clothes/regular clothes regularly - I specifically say lab clothes because it’s easy just to keep them in your locker so you never forget them thus they don’t get washed. Believe me, people can smell that you don’t wash them. Someone in my class pointed out someone who smelled before we went into lab and you best believe he started taking his lab clothes home to wash them. Save the embarrassment and wash them regularly.
3. Take a day each weak to relax
This is so important for your mental health. I usually choose Friday because I am so burnt out from the week and I have the weekend to study for any tests in the upcoming week. This may not be possible with finals but for the rest of the semester I think it’s critical to have a recharge. I usually nap, catch up on a show I’m watching, read a book, etc. Do whatever makes you happy and breathe.
4. Limit eating out
This includes the delicious ice coffee that everyone gets. This ties back in with the whole health thing but also with saving money. Grocery shopping and comparing prices is something I enjoy doing but if you don’t, you will still save money buying stuff at a grocery store rather than eating out at lunch. Even if you are buying already made easy meals from the grocery store, it is still cheaper! I would still recommend cooking your own meals, even if it’s simple. I find meal prepping to be the easiest during the weekend then you don’t have to worry about food for the rest of the week.
It’s important to have easy meals too just incase you didn’t have time to meal prep and you need something fast. Here are some recommendations:
-Rice - I usually make a big batch at once so I can just heat it up when I need it. It’s cheaper to buy it in the big bags and cook it rather than the microwaveable bags like what trader joes has. To make the rice moist and fluffy again when microwaving add about 1tbsp of water, cover the rice (I usually use a tupperware lid), and microwave. It essentially resteams the rice to make it delicious again!
-Frozen turkey burgers - If you’re vegetarian this could be veggie burgers but these are so easy to heat up, have a lot of protein, and are good. I get the Bubba brad from Costco.
-Frozen Veggies - these are super easy to steam to give you some nutrients from veggies.
-Eggs - super cheap and fast to make
-Fruits - the ones that are easy to take with you like bananas, apples, nectarines, peaches, plums, etc.
-Protein powder - a protein shake is perfect pre/post workout
All said and done, I usually eat out 2 time a month or so just to try new places but I really love eating homecooked meals and I love trying new recipes.
5. Have a water bottle
Especially if you drink coffee, it is easy to get dehydrated. Bring a water bottle to class and have one with you when you’re studying to drink regularly.
6. Don’t worry if you don’t make friends
I thought I was going to make my best friends for life in med school but it’s been a year and I didn’t. It’s ok! It’s better to stay out of the drama and grind because the real reason you’re there is to become a doctor. If you make some friends along the way that’s great too!

Hi, mom, I have a question about allergies. I am allergic to certain types of laundry soap, the worst of which is tide. I suspect that I am allergic to the borax that's in these soaps, as it's a common ingredient in all of the ones I'm allergic to, but do you know of any way to figure out for sure what causes the reaction. As a side note, there isn't an allergist at the practice I go to anymore, but I do have a pulmonologist, if that matters at all. Thank you so much in advance!
Oh dear, I’m so sorry to hear you’re having issues with laundry detergent @colehence, but rest assured you are not alone in being allergic to things like Tide, it’s actually super common. You didn’t mention what your reactions were (and pulmonology is really only going to help if it’s triggering asthma) and while it’s possible you are reacting to the borax, it’s also entirely possible it’s the synthetic scents, the presence of sulfates (huge problem for a lot of us with chronic allergies or things like eczema) or any number of things in brands like Tide. The smell alone of regular Tide triggers respiratory distress in myself, the second worst thing after that being Downy fabric softener which we found out was triggering an allergic reaction which manifested as panic attacks and migraines for me from even just walking down the laundry aisle in the grocery store, so now I don’t. I will do a loop of the entire store to avoid the laundry aisle unless I have my vogmask with me. Cause fuck all that shit.
Even Tide’s “Free and Clear” range scores an F for failure and high levels of allergy and toxicity through EWG.org due to containing Ethanolamine, Benzisothiazolinone (also found in pesticides, fun!) as well as Sodium Borate (Borax) which are all known skin irritants and just generally non allergy friendly. So fuck Tide for pretending to actually make something “free and clear” when what they mean is “we didn’t add the neon blue or that weird chemical scent, enjoy your other major allergens though!”.
The only way to really test this on your own without an allergist, is to try alternative laundry detergent brands. Unfortunately actual free and clear detergents are more expensive, but well worth the investment if you can find a way to get them in bulk. Cause y’know not itching to death/having constant headaches and coughs as well as clean clothes should be an attainable goal for everyone, not just people without allergies.
I have three brands I know I can use without major issue. And because this is going to get long, I will put the full ingredient list of each one under a cut <3
Planet 2x Ultra Laundry Detergent Free & Clear*
Whole Foods Organic Liquid Laundry Detergent, Unscented**
Seventh Generation Powder Detergents: aka I will die on the hill of this brand, I just wish it was more affordable.****
Another thing worth checking for along with trying to avoid borax is methylisothiazolinone which is in virtually every commercial main brand of everything cause it’s a highly effectiveantimicrobial and preservative.
And it’s also highly effective at making me dead cause I can’t have anything that contains it in the house, no hand soaps, no laundry, no perfumes, no candles no nothing. Even all of ETD’s things, his soaps, shampoo, lotions, sunscreen, all of it had to go because just even him using it was making my skin break out. Which is unacceptable when you smooch as much as we do. Methylisothiazolinone is also often used hand in hand with benzisothiazolinone, which you may remember from our good worst friend Tide. So that’s another thing to watch out for, even if one isn’t listed, they often go hand in hand together.
Other brands which are low allergen and don’t contain borax but I haven’t personally tried are:
Biokleen Free & Clear,
Ecover (which my mother has been using for literal decades, it’s great if you can get it but I struggle to find it over here at a reasonable price so I didn’t list it up there)
Attitude: Little Ones Laundry Detergent (Fragrance Free),
Fit Organic Laundry Detergent (Free and Clear),
and Green Shield Organic, which even their scented ones test low on allergens, so I may need to check those out.
Brands to AVOID if you have skin issues or respiratory allergies include:
Tide in all shapes and forms, (I’m sorry, I know it’s cheap but compare that to the cost of your allergy meds/asthma meds and oh boy is it suddenly not worth it.)
Wallgreens “Nice!” brand.
Ajax. (it burns)
Kirkland Signature (you can hear the Costco lovers screaming)
Arm and Hammer (yes really, even their free and clear contains sodium alylyr aryl ether sulfate which is a medium range allergy risk for skin and respiratory issues)
J.R. Watkins ‘Natural’ Liquid Laundry Detergent, Fragrance Free (they don’t actually list what their surfactants are but based on my reaction I think it’s wheat based)
and lastly, the insidious Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day product range which can honeslty just jump off a cliff with their synthetic fragrances and their methylisothiazolinone and all their other crap they hide behind their “we use essential oils so we’re SAFE” marketing horseshit. I’d literally rather gargle glass than touch any of their products again. It’d have roughly the same effect on my throat and lungs.
Anyway…I hope some of this is helpful for you in trying to work out if it is your laundry cleaning that is causing you the issue. If you want to hit me up on IM (I will be opening it up again this weekend) to chat allergies and what have you, I am totally down with that :) Take care!
*Planet 2x Ultra Laundry Detergent Free & Clear (liquid): Sodium Carbonate, Stearic Acid, Water, Sodium Gluconate, Lauryl Glucoside, PPG-5-Laureth-5 (possible skin irritant) and Laureth-7 (possible skin irritant).
I want to like this brand cause it’s easy for me to get hold of and it’s fairly cheap as “eco friendly” detergents go, but it just kind of doesn’t clean all that well. The powder one cleaned great! Unfortunately it has borax in it and a thing called C-10-16 Pareth-1 which as well as being a high risk ingredient for allergy and asthma sufferers, is also apparently raising some cancer concerns, so out the window that went. Except not really cause it’s not good for the environment and I didn’t want to give the squirrels cancer or something. idk, I worry about those things.
The liquid however is low allergy, it just didn’t seem to work very well in my hard water for when it came to cleaning. Other people might have better luck with it.
**Whole Foods Organic Liquid Laundry Detergent, Unscented: Soapbark, Glycerin, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sea Salt, Saponofied Cocos (coconut) Oil, Water, Xanthum Gum (yay gluten free. I wish I was kidding†.) Guar Gum, Thymus Satureioides, Aloe Vera Juice Powder, Sapindus Mukurossi and Acacia Senegal Gum.This is the brand I am currently using cause I wanted to try out cause I can apparently get 200 washes for $16 a bottle, which makes it way ahead of all the others in terms of price matching, and also to see if it worked better than other organic brands I’ve tried, which generally fell short of the mark when it came to actually lifting the dirt out of clothes. And it does actually really work well, I’m enjoying using it, if you can say such a thing about laundry detergent. Ewg.org does flag up some of their ingredients as high risk for asthma and respiratory reactions (acacia senegal gum is apparently not good for the lungs) but I’ve had zero skin or respiratory reactions to it, so I’ll keep using it until the bottle runs out and I can try something else.Ewg.org actually rates their non organic 365 Everyday Value 2X Concentrated Powder Laundry Detergent, Unscented*** as better for the environment, as well as being fairly safe for skin allergies, so that’s what I might try after my giant bottle of 200 washes runs out.
***Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value 2X Concentrated Powder Laundry Detergent, Unscented: Vegetable Soap, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Metasilicate (possible skin irritant) and Alcohol Ethoxylates (c12) (possible skin irritant)
****Seventh Generation Natural Laundry Detergent Powder:Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Silicate (water softeners and alkalinity builders), Zeolite (water softeners and alkalinity builders), Fatty Alcohol/Ethoxylated Fatty Ester Blend (coconut and corn-derived cleaning agents), Polyglucose (coconut and corn-derived cleaning agents), Magnesium Sulfate, Sodium Sulfate (performance enhancers), Sodium Percarbonate (non-chlorine bleach), Carboxymethyl Inulin (antiredeposition agents), Carboxymethylcellulose (antiredeposition agents), Protease (non-animal derived enzymes), Cellulase (non-animal derived enzymes), Oleic Acid (plant-derived anti-foaming agents)
Seventh Generation is one of those rare few brands, where I am not allergic to their scents. I once switched to Trader Joe’s Organic Scented (powder) laundry, only to discover really quickly that they can’t actually verify whether their essential oils being used are cold or steam pressed. But I can tell you from my reaction to it, they’re not. They’re cheap synthetic alcohol based ones and if your allergies focus on synthetic scents, avoid TJ stuff like the plague until they get their ass in gear and actually source their scents better. Seventh generation POWDER detergents however, are the bomb, they work really well in my hard water due to added water softeners, and I can tolerate their scented versions through they are increasingly harder to find.
Their liquid ones however, do contain methylisothiazolinone which is a high concern for allergies, respiratory issues and is really not good for the fishes if not polluting out earth is something you are concerned about.
†A lot of “healthy” brands are using wheat protein in things as a surfactant now, and for some of us that really can be an issue if we have allergies to wheat in any way or form. I found this out the hard way when I used a shampoo that contained it and broke out in body wide hives and had to drench myself in aloe vera and take all my meds to stop the itching, and even then I looked burned for several days until it calmed down. It also caused a huge chunk of my hair to fall out so if you’re celiac, gluten intolerant or have a wheat allergy in any way shape or form, avoid Avalon Organics Thickening Shampoo, it will, ironically, potentially make your hair fall out.

Hi there, recently my therapist suggested I go to a psychologist since I have a lot of symptoms for ADHD. My parents mentioned that I may have to take meds since these symptoms resulted in poor grades and forgetfulness. The problem here is, I saw the prices of these meds and with our family income, I don't think we can afford to pay for it monthly. I did some research, but I'm so lost as to what programs could help. Thanks in advance for replying. :)
First, if your parents have health insurance they may have a prescription plan.
Second, a lot depends on the manufacturer and whether or not you take a generic. Generics are cheaper than name-brand versions. For example, I take a generic of my antidepressant, and my husband’s insurance covers that completely; if it was name-brand we would have to pay some of it ourselves.
Third, most manufacturers have programs on their web sites that you can register with, where you can get coupons and/or discounts on medication that they make.
Fourth, look at where you might get the prescription filled. Costco and Walmart are often cheaper than regular pharmacies, and you don’t need to have a Costco membership to use the pharmacy.
Finally, talk to your parents about this concern. You can go over our list of treatment options and see if there’s anything you think would be cheaper than medication, and tell them you want to try that first. But your parents will probably have some information about the medication costs that you don’t have, and they will be able to set your mind at ease.

Adventure
I had an eventful day today yesterday (since it’s already past midnight).
I wanted to work out before doing my laundry but I discovered that I forgot to take my meds last night. I take high blood pressure and diabetes meds, and I could feel my blood pressure and blood sugar out of whack. I had a cold sweat and I felt weird. It’s weird to describe but I knew what it meant.
Took my meds, rested for a bit, then went out to start my day.
Laundry. I switched from the nice laundromat near my workplace because they allowed smoking in there. Yes, it was a separate smoking room, but it was poorly ventilated and I could smell it inside the wash room. Now I was using the laundromat just a short distance from my apartment.
While washing my clothes, I stopped at the Sugarbot Sweet Shop for 12 cookies: 6 double chocolate chip cookies and 6 M&M cookies.
I put away half of my laundry then sat down to rest. It would take a while for the morning meds to take effect, so I passed the time by watching Twitch. Etwurt is a streamer I followed a while back, and he was doing impersonations of his fellow streamers.
I went downstairs, and with half my laundry still inside the car, I decided to do something less strenuous than climbing back upstairs. I drove to Newcastle Comics and Games.
I wanted to know more about what happened to the Fantasy Shop in St. Charles. I wanted to know why my former friends seem to have gone on a self-destructive path.
No one in that shop knew anything. No one had heard any mention of it online or offline. Worse, they had none of the cards I was looking for. Moving on...
I made my way to Miniature Market. I had wanted to check this place out because a streamer in my home state, Zeriah Binchiette, wanted to play Battletech. Not just the Mechwarrior or Battletech video games, but the actual miniatures game.
Unfortunately, they only had two players planning on starting a Battletech group. And one of them... Was Zeriah himself.
“Yeah, did one of the two players look like this?” I showed the shopkeeper his Twitch stream profile.
“Yeah, that’s definitely one of them.”
Never mind, then.
I then asked if they had heard about some drama brewing on Facebook about the St. Charles Magic: the Gathering community, and was surprised to get some relevant information.
I was told that a local player had told them about some drama regarding the Fantasy Shop. Something about the shop going downhill. I will be paying this shop a visit this Friday to learn more.
I shared with him my own information, that the place had started mass banning regulars who had gone there for years on false pretenses. The shopkeeper was shocked but didn’t seem surprised.
Before leaving, the shopkeeper told me that Gate Nite might have some Battletech players.
Game Nite rearranged its furniture, with the couches where the miniatures play tables were and vice-versa. While they didn’t have any information about the drama in St. Charles, they did tell me that there will be a Battletech event in October. Interesting.
After Game Nite, I went to Costco to get something to eat. A slice of combo pizza and some water.
Next stop was the Manticore Game Shop. An uneventful visit. Bought six 1/1 goblin tokens, and that was it.
Stopped by the Collector Store briefly, then went back home with the intention of coming back later for Commander.
I went back home and brought in half of the laundry still remaining in my car, leaving 1/4 of the total laundry I did still there. I was, and still am very tired. Procrastinated a bit on Twitch and watch another streamer, katebit, who looks a lot like a former coworker of mine, except with much fewer drugs.
I went back to the Collector Store to play Commander. I also saw some people I hadn’t seen in a while, and learned a lot more information about what happened at the Fantasy Shop.
Apparently, the owner had a meltdown. They wanted to sell booster boxes at too high a markup, and when the store manager tried to talk the owner out of it, the owner tore into her and did not listen to what she had to say.
I’m not surprised. She is smarter than she thinks she is, but was hired as eye candy. She was a figurehead while two former managers served as the power behind the throne.
Of note was a certain clerk that the former store manager and another clerk described as “mentally unstable.” I was told that they had been telling people who asked why that clerk was gone that she was fired for being mentally unstable.
How... cruel. How hypocritical, for people so concerned with optics. For all their talk of professionalism, they sure like to tattle on their former employees.
After getting home, I decided to do my full workout, then write this, a blog entry chronicling the previous day.
Overall, it was a mildly uneventful day. Not as busy nor as frantic as others.

50 Questions:
I was tagged by @wonderlandmind4 :)
1. What is the colour of your hairbrush?
-Black and green
2. Name a food you never eat?
-I’m “picky” aka have food OCD, so that’s a lengthy list lol. Some big no-go’s are mushrooms and asparagus.
3. Are you typically too warm or too cold?
-I’m ALWAYS warm.
4. What were you doing 45 minutes ago?
- Playing pool on my phone, listening to the top songs of 2004, and drinking a seltzer.
5. What is your favourite candy bar?
-Twix or bueno bars!!
6. Have you ever been to a professional sports game?
-Yes! I’ve gone to see the Seattle Storm, the Sonics (back when they were ours!!), the Sounders, and the Mariners.
7. What is the last thing you said out loud?
- “Ow.” I smacked myself in the face with a bowl when I went to funnel Fritos into my mouth........
8. What is your favourite ice cream?
- I’m the person that gets cotton candy or bubble gum lol. But I do really like coffee Oreo or anything caramel!
9. What is the last thing you had to drink?
- A Smirnoff raspberry rosé seltzer. They’re pretty sweet, but tasty nonetheless.
10. Do you like your wallet?
- Yes! I’ve been a sucker for Coach since I was little, and even as my taste has evolved (read: gotten significantly more expensive), I always like to have a Coach wallet. Right now I have a dusty blue croc “skin” trifold that serves me well!
11. What was the last thing you ate?
-Fritos, before I smacked myself in the face with the bowl.
12. Did you buy new clothes last weekend?
- No, but I bought a lamp! And I found some old Barnes and Nobles gift cards and ordered a book. But I work in retail, so I usually say yes to this question lol.
13. The last sporting event you watched?
-XFL. I wanted to be a Seattle Dragons fan, and I’m so bummed about the league folding.
14. What is your favourite flavour of popcorn?
-I’m not a huge popcorn fan, but I do love it when it’s chocolate-coated. Otherwise just a shit ton of butter. *WAIT NO, I lied. My neighbor makes this insane curry powder popcorn and it’s to die for.
15. Who is the last person who sent a text message to?
-Last person I messaged? @princesszorldo. Last person I texted? My dad (who is upstairs haha) to congratulate him in 27 years living in the United States.

- Kind of. I’ve never done the full on “tent on a camp site or in the woods”, but I’ve camped out in tents on retreats and I’ve gone to sleep away camp.

-I ought to. I take a liquid multi and calcium sometimes, but I’m on so many meds that I have an aversion to taking pills when I don’t absolutely need to.
18. Do you go to church every Sunday?
- I used to. That’s a tricky subject for me, but I usually respond to religion with “I’m a Christian, but I don’t support institutionalized religion and the modern Christian church doesn’t widely reflect what I value and see the faith to be about”.
19. Do you have a tan?
- I’m half Filipino, so yeah. lol. BUT I like to joke that being half means that I get melanin for half of the year only. It’s a pretty drastic difference if you met me in August vs February.
20. Do you prefer Chinese food over pizza?
- Chinese! I love noodles!! But pizza is a pretty close second.
21. Do you drink your soda with a straw?
- I’m not a big soda drinker, but I LOVE straws. I always have a reusable straw in my bag.
22. What colour socks do you usually wear?
- Usually white, but black if I’m working or going somewhere nice.
23. Do you ever drive above the speed limit?
- Not really. But I don’t really drive. I live right in the city and it’s so much easier to bus or take ride share. I’ve been able to drive since I was fifteen, but I got my license at nearly twenty-one. And I don’t have a car. I actually *hit* another car during my drive test and played dumb and the lady still passed me! Soooooo, I don't drive over the limit by way of I don't really drive. But I probably would if I drove more.
24. What terrifies you?
-Not being understood. Moths. The concept of eternity.
25. What do you left, what do you see?
-Myself in my dresser mirror. I just cleaned my room, so my dresser top is clean!

- @princesszorldo lol. And H2o
28. What’s your favourite soda?

29. Do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive?
- Drive-Thru!!! I hate getting out of the car if I don’t have to.
30. What’s your favourite number?
-16 bc I was born on the 16th.

33. Last song you listen to?

36. Can you say the alphabet backwards?
- I learned in 7th grade bc I was being bullied and that’s what I would do to distract myself in class. But now it’s a cool party trick!
37. How do you like your coffee?
-COFFEEEEEEE. I take it lots of ways. If I’m camping or need something asap? Drip with half and half, and with honey and cinnamon if there’s any. At home? Stok cold brew with hazelnut creamer. On my way to and from work? Usually an iced vanilla latte or an iced white mocha.
38. Favourite pair of shoes?
- My blue crocs. Or I have some baby pink Swedish Hasbeen clogs that I love! Or my maroon docs. But I wear my Sam Edelman pointy-toed booties the most bc I’m “highly encouraged” to wear heels to work.
39. Time you normally get up?
-For work? Between 6:30 and 7:30am. Lately? Noon. And that’s on narcolepsy and quarantine, periodt.
40. What do you prefer sunrise or sunset?
- Sunset bc I’m actually awake lol.
41. How many blankets on your bed?
- Two. I sleep with just a weighted blanket, but I have a duvet on the half of my bed that I don’t sleep on.
42. Describe your kitchen plates?
- Lol what. They’re blue. From Costco. I don’t like the size range that the set came in, but whatever.
43. Describe your kitchen at the moment?
- There are sugar ants coming from somewhere, so a lot of our food is sitting on the dining room table lol. Fun fact! Pam spray kills those fuckers on sight. My mother isn’t happy that I figured that out.
44. Do you have a favourite alcoholic drink?
- Vodka tonics, usually. I love cider and seltzers. I’m a big tequila fan, but I’ve got to commit to that. I can’t have beer bc gluten hates me, and I can’t have Jäger anymore bc living in Prague funneled way too much of that shit through my esophagus,
45. Do you play cards?
- I love games, but especially cards! Nerts, BS, speed, spoons.... I pick up new random games all the time, but those are some favorites.
46. What colour is your car?
- What car? If I had one it would be orange and obnoxious. Probably a Subaru Outback bc Seattle tings.
47. Can you change a tire?
- Bruh. After all of that do I sound like someone who can change a tire?
48. Your favourite state?
- WASHINGTON. Oregon and California get honorable mentions, though. I want to like New York, but I haven’t been. I feel like I would like Massachusetts, too. I’m fond of Texas, but that’s a complicated love lol.
49. Favourite job you’ve had?
- I like my current job (finally)! I’m a bridal stylist, and while there were some people on staff that were tough, I love working with brides and I was excited to learn that I quickly became one of the top sellers on my team!
50. How did you get your scar?
- Right wrist is from when I burned myself on the toaster oven when I was five. Left wrist from when Elly scratched me on the playground in third grade and the front office lady wouldn't let me go to the nurse bc she was friends with Elly’s mom and said “that’s what I deserved”. Left knee.....definitely not from falling after a night out.... Lots of old keloid scars on my ears from piercings. I had a cyst removed and that bad boy did not heal up nicely. Lovely. I mostly sprain and break things, though.
@princesszorldo here’s something to do while in quarantine lol

Hello Yahoo Community, I am married, pregnant, with no health insurance. I've look for insurances but I am having a hard time finding one that covers maternity costs and if they do they're tremendously expensive and out of our reach. Also since it's a pre-existing condition, most insurances don't cover it. Does anyone know about any programs where I can partially pay for the services? It's becoming rather stressful. Any help or information will be appreciated. Thank You.""

Ok i know this question has been asked a million times on this, so let me be the million and one person to ask and hopefully for the last time. Thing is , i need to buy another care and is between those 2 cars and i just dont know which one to get. I don't know much about cars and so on so i would like some decent answers on which one i should get and why, my third choice was taken out of the equation when i read up on it on the kbb website, thrid choice was an audi tt but alot of people complained about how often it needed to be fixed for something The factors that most concern me are -Realibilty -Insurance cost -How much would it cost for maintance and repairs -which one is built better -which one of the two do you think looks better -which one will last me longer in the long run for those who would ask , i live in florida , and would like an automatic just incase those things are taken into consideration tours making my decision. i know this has been asked a million times but i really need to just settle for one or the other so please help me out thank you in advance for those who answer.""

How am I supposed to afford car insurance?
I'm driving uninsured right now because for me to get car insurance is $900 every six months. That would crush me financially right now. Between rent and gas, and what little Starbucks pretends to pay me, not to mention food (and sometimes that's one meal a day, and even then it may be stealing expired sandwiches and pastries from the garbage can at Starbucks). So, it's utterly naive of the government to think of driving as a luxury , when in reality- when you have to travel 20 miles a day to get to work at Starbucks- walking is unrealistic. The bus routes do not go by there, by the way. How the hell do they expect a 24-year old man to afford car insurance, when he has to work to earn the money to pay for it, and he has to drive to work, and in order to drive he has to drive illegally?! The @#*%ing system is completely screwed up if you ask me. Don't get me started on how the hell I'm supposed to afford gas these days, either.""

Was it wise for me to cancel my car insurance?
I had gotten into an accident. ICBC says it's 100% my fault, and I did just file an injury claim for myself and my family members that were in the car with me. I don't think my car is drivable, but if it is, then it's not worth fixing because I don't have collision and it would cost more to fix than how much I had bought it for. What I did yesterday, was cancelled my car insurance. But I was just talking to someone who told me that it wasn't a good idea to do that. And now I'm doubting myself. Will this be held against me? The person in the other car claimed injury and her car is also damaged. Did I just dig a deeper hole for myself?""
Car accident with no insurance?
I was stopped at a red light behind two cars. Both cars started to go and so did I the next thing I knew I had hit the car in front of me. The car in front of me hit the car in front of him. We all pulled over my car isnt to bad but I drive a suburban, the car in front of me was a smaller car so his looked a little worse. Nobody was hurt, and all cars were drivable, so we decided to not call the police we just all exchanged information. After we had finished and they left I immediately called my insurance lady to let her know what happened. I am not super clear on this next part, we have been going back and forth with our insurance since that call and will continue to fight it. When I called the insurance lady she said I wasnt covered. She said that they had received the last payment much later than it was due (not sure how because it was mailed the same time as always) but because of that our insurance had been cancelled. A couple of weeks ago they had chased our check, she said we were reinstated as of yesterday (the day of the accident) but because it was the same day they werent liable to pay the damages. We are going to keep fighting them because I dont think its fair. Even if they decide that they wont pay we can afford to just pay for the damages to the rear end of the car in front of us, because know matter what happened I am at fault for following to close. We cant afford to pay out of our pocket also for his front end and the rear end of the first car. Shouldnt those damages be covered by the car I hit because he was obviously following to close to the car in front of him? Im a little freaked out with all this, this is the first accident I have ever been in and we have always had insurance, so we thought. The insurance company did say they mailed us a cancellation notice but if they did we have never received one.""

Getting Car Insurance for an American?

Our Minds Can Be Our Heaviest Weights at the Gym
After losing about 30 pounds this year, I gained a few back on vacation, and now I’m settling back into the habit of eating clean and working out. When looking back at what I’ve done and what I want to do, I have equal amounts of pride and fear – pride because of what I’ve been able to do thus far, and fear because there’s always the possibility that I’ll end up gaining back the weight, the way I’ve always done.
Getting and staying in shape is difficult for everyone, but this is especially so for someone with a psychological issue. Autistics have a unique set of challenges concerning the effort to become and to stay healthy and, as in so many other efforts, we have to face our challenges a different way from most of our friends and family.
While shaming is an awful thing, I’m sure most of us like the idea of being physically strong. We’re as likely as anyone else to love reading comic books or watching movies about a super-hero, or to want to look like our favorite actor or athlete. I think everyone cares about having and broadcasting strength, and we’re no exception. Where we get into trouble is, trying to establish the habits we need to become what we want to be.
We actually have a few physical problems. For one, we’re likely to be less co-ordinated than other people. A local autism group has, or used to have, gym classes for kids, just so they can build some of the same physical skills other kids their age have – in a sense, this is little different from how we have to work on our social skills. To this day, I have a hard time even throwing a ball, because it’s an extremely complicated bio-mechanical process, and I have a hard time catching one because I see it as a threat, and I want to shield myself or to get out of the way – this is why I love rugby or power-run football; if someone hands me the ball, I can run with it.
Another issue is our tendency to become overloaded. Exercise can be rough on the nerves, especially if someone tries to work out a lot. This means, of course, that many intense programs essentially are a waste of time, because we don’t last long on them, and it means that if we’re not careful, workouts that are supposed to make us feel better instead will make us cranky and irritable all day.
The other physical issue is our vulnerability to discomfort. My main obstacle to eating right usually has been what people call being “hangry”, or becoming angry on account of hunger. Carbohydrates have a calming effect on a person, which probably is why comfort foods are so comforting, and controlling what we eat can get us in constantly sour moods if we’re not careful.
Our psychological problems often come from the way so many people like to motivate those in their charge. Many trainers we see either on television or on videos like to act like military drill sergeants; on reality shows, they like to yell a lot and question the adulthood or fortitude of those who are having problems. Now, I’ve talked to enough veterans, including former drill sergeants, to understand why the military has those practices – they need to train personnel to act quickly and to give their all when there’s a lot of confusing and demoralizing crap going on around them. But then, if we’re not in the military, the military approach isn’t necessary and, often enough, it isn’t effective.
I, for one, generally shut down if someone tries to motivate me that way. As in any other situation, someone yelling at me to do one thing just makes me want to do the opposite, no matter how good their ideas might be. I also figure that if someone is going to criticize me no matter how hard I try, I don’t want to give an effort my all just to make them happy – it would be rewarding them for being jerks.
I’m well off enough to have found a gym in which the athletic types are respectful and friendly. I know not everyone is in that situation. Some of us can be turned off and even highly demoralized if we go somewhere, hoping to become strong, only to be the butt of jokes or the subject of whispers from others who already are fit, and who wonder what we’re doing in there.
For me, though, the hardest part isn’t getting results, but maintaining them. While in the middle of a diet, I usually get good initial results, and that excites me enough to keep going. Once I get to a certain point, though, I hit a plateau, so to speak – my body adapts to what I’m doing, and I have a harder time gaining strength and endurance or losing adipose tissue. That’s when I start to regain whatever weight I’ve lost, and in the past, it didn’t help much that I was so single-minded about losing weight that I lost some muscle as well, which meant that my metabolism slowed down, which meant that I regained the weight relatively quickly.
The good news is, there are ways to work around most of these issues, if not all. While most of us, autistic or otherwise, aren’t going to become great athletes, we can become better off than we would be otherwise, and that’s an extremely comforting thought. I suppose my first rule, then, is to put things into perspective and to think about what we are able to do.
I usually recommend finding a minimalist routine. Tim Ferriss wrote a book, The Four-Hour Body, which lists a few excellent routines that don’t take very long at all. One of my favorite maxims about life, let alone exercise, comes from that book: “The decent system you follow is better than the perfect system you quit.”
Currently, I’m doing “Deck of Cards” workouts, in which I assign one exercise to each suit and, as I flip over each card, do as many reps of the exercise as the value on the card – I use “blackjack scoring”, so face cards are 10 reps and aces are 11 reps. The workouts are physically tough, but I don’t do too much of any exercise at once – I have a cheat rule that if three or more cards are the same suit, I can put the third card into the middle of the remaining deck. The workout is tough, but it’s a little different each time, so it isn’t boring, and I have a habit of taking regular water breaks in the middle. So far, it’s been wonderfully effective. The best part is, it’s a workout a person can do at home if they want.
Interval training usually is a good thing, simply because those workouts are less likely to be boring. It’s especially important when doing cardiovascular exercise – again, we don’t want to get bored, and since autistics often have ADD as well, me being one example, keeping interest is key. Actually, though this obviously doesn’t happen in the gym, I love line dancing, because we do the same routine for only three or four minutes at a time.
Planning also is important, especially when it comes to eating. I go to Costco and buy plenty of fully cooked meat patties or chicken sausages – I eat low-carb, personally – and I buy others I can broil, plus meat snacks to munch on. One problem with diets is their instructions to eat the same thing every day, when our bodies simply need more or less food on any given day. Another is the supposed need to count calories. I simply have a good working idea of what my portions are, and I eat one portion and, if I still feel hungry later, I have another one. I also plan to cheat – I have what I call a Cheat Treat after every weight or Deck of Cards workout, plus the occasional Sunday brunch with family. It becomes part of my routine, which makes it easier. I also am not a cold-turkey kind of guy. Any transition I make has to be slow and easy. After my recent vacation, for instance, I’ve been eating a little bit less sugar and starch each day, so I can settle back into my routine without suffering unnecessarily the first few days back in town. In the same way, I give myself a little leeway to settle into a new routine at the gym when I have to change it, which I usually do two or three times a year.
Much of my advice to people who are trying to train and to motivate us is similar in nature to the advice I give us: Make things as easy as possible. Most professional trainers understand this already, but to well-meaning friends, I often say, albeit in more polite language, “Our purpose isn’t to become more alpha, it’s to become more FIT.”
It’s OK to look for a gym or other place to work out, where a person doesn’t have to feel as self-conscious. If we’re going to keep heading to a place a couple of times a week – I usually exercise twice a week, three times at most – we might as well find a place in which we’re comfortable. My only caveat is, that many places that cater to beginners or to the self-conscious may present a problem if we want to make it past a certain level – I won’t go to Planet Fitness, for instance, because they don’t allow deadlifts, and they have other rules that discourage bodybuilders and other athletes whom I generally have found encouraging and very willing to share tips and tricks.
In my case, medication has had the positive side effect of making me less hangry, which enables me to do a better job of watching what I eat. Of course, the meds I take do make me tired, which means I don’t do as much cardio and, consequently, have to work harder to keep up my endurance. It just goes to show that some efforts still are ongoing.
Finally, it’s good to keep in mind the mental benefits of working out. I generally am more able to adapt to other situations in life because I can compare them to training at the gym. I also think of working out as a meditative effort – it’s just me and the equipment. It helps, of course, that I don’t play loud music or try to motivate myself to intensity.
Last year, while on vacation, I took a picture with two of my friends, which I count as my “Before” picture. This year, about 25 pounds lighter and a little bigger in the chest, I took another one with the same friends. I take pride in my progress, I’m nervous about keeping up the good work, and I really like the thought of taking another picture with them next year, in which I’m even more fit. With what I’ve learned about how to work around my condition, maybe I really can get the kind of body I want or, at least, come closer than I ever thought I could.
