It's the way they made sure we knew that, not ONLY had Jess promised (cheerfully, no less!) to take Rory to the Prom, but that he was FOLLOWING THROUGH! They explicitly stated that he was sent to the office while he was TRYING to buy Prom tickets! And then even after the principal told him he was flunking out, he still kept trying to get them to let him go to the dance anyway so at least he'd get to give Rory this thing she wanted! Guys, he tried SO HARD! Like, the show made it VERY VERY CLEAR that he didn't just say one thing and then "not do it," they made sure to show that he was ACTIVELY TRYING! And KEPT TRYING to take her to Prom even as his own life was falling apart! If they could only let him do that ONE THING for HER, then at least not all would be lost. He was like, "Ok, I'm not graduating. That sucks, but you're missing the most important part here, which is that Rory wanted to go to the Prom." He CARED! SO MUCH! He really wanted to make her happy! 😫😭

Luke and Jess's dynamic in "Swan Song" stands out in a really interesting way.
It's one of the only times when they're living together that Luke insists on hearing Jess's side of a story, and Jess is actually quite responsive to that. (He also fesses up to working at Walmart with minimal prodding and continues to share details about it even though Luke laughs at him the entire time.) Luke, like Rory, assumes at first that Jess fought with Dean and then gives up when Jess gets defensive; however, when Jess doesn't want to talk to Rory, Luke decides that he needs to demand an answer: "Look, you're my responsibility. You're exhibiting signs of violent behavior and I don't care how much you don't want to talk about it, you're not leaving until you tell me. Now tell me, where'd you get the black eye?"
Once he says this, Jess doubts that Luke will believe him but tells the truth in all its humiliating glory. When Luke then doesn't believe him, Jess gives away even more information, and Luke joins him on the absolutely ridiculous revenge mission and even rows the boat to get there. It seems like this gesture resonates with Jess because he continues to willingly answer Luke's questions. Most notably, he says that he doesn't know why Rory wants to be with him. That's a pretty significant insecurity for him to admit! Then Luke offers sincere advice, and while Jess puts up a wall of sarcasm ("Give it a rest, Dr. Phil!") and says that he doesn't care, he does his best to implement this advice on the same day.
Luke isn't exactly kind in the beginning of this plot thread, and he initially reinforces Jess's hesitancy to trust him, but then he tangibly demonstrates that he cares and makes an effort to take Jess's perspective seriously, and Jess is honest with him and ultimately accepts his guidance. That doesn't seem like a coincidence.
Side note: Just realized that Jess has sarcastically likened both Luke and Lorelai to famous psychologists.

One thing that frustrates me about Gilmore Girls is the way Jess is written between S2 and S3. Or more accurately, how other characters' reactions to him are written.
S2 Jess causes trouble, there's no way around that. But the townsfolk are way too hard on him, and the show is VERY clear about that. We're meant to see Taylor as hysterically overreacting about Jess. We're meant to see the Town Meeting about evicting him as a bad thing. We're meant to feel badly that the town blames him for the car accident. We're meant to think that Lorelai was completely unreasonable in that situation. Jess has FLAWS, sure. Even Rory and Luke, arguably the only two people who give Jess a chance, are pretty clear in sharing their thoughts when he's made a mistake. But Rory and Luke are not wrong when they speak about Jess' strengths and potential. And S2 wants me to know that!
But in S3? Suddenly the message seems to be that Jess was bad all along. Which is especially weird because S3 Jess doesn't really cause trouble. Instead, his minor mistakes in his relationship with Rory are blown up into catastrophes. Rory is SAD. She hates who she is with Jess (which is apparently Jess' fault, and has nothing to do with her own lack of communication skills). Rory stops defending Jess. She regrets ending things with Dean, and ultimately describes choosing Jess as a mistake. Jess flunks out of school, and it's presented like it was 100% his dumb fault. Jess then falls apart at Kyle's party, and it's presented like the obvious and unavoidable conclusion to his arc. (Dean? The guy who STARTED the fight? Is portrayed as justified, even honorable.) Luke steals Jess' car and kicks him out, and the show is utterly committed to portraying this as a necessary step in Jess' growth. Luke questions himself about that choice for exactly one second... and he's IMMEDIATELY assured that he did nothing wrong. A message the show sticks with, by the way, for the rest of the series. Luke HAD to kick Jess out. It was NECESSARY. Jess needed to HIT ROCK BOTTOM.
It just feels like a missed opportunity. S2 was such a fun exploration of the faulty judgments and assumptions adults can make about teenagers. The show highlighted the unfair pressure adults put on Jess AND Rory. We were exploring the idea of "good" kids and "bad" kids, and how both types of assumptions are reductive and harmful. Great stuff, and a big reason why S2 is my favorite season.
But then S3 rushes to "correct" that notion by emphatically concluding that Jess is BAD and Rory is GOOD and the adults were right all along. And Jess doesn't become good until much later. After he's "learned his lesson" by getting kicked out, thoroughly chastised, and silenced into the "right" kind of good behavior.

does gilmore girls have a tumblr following?? we should give it a better tumblr following. the only things i've seen about the show on this site are shit posts and strange gifs that truly have nothing to do with the show's important events at the end of the day.
we need fanfiction with twists and turns, all about exploring lorelai's youngest days in the house of richard and emily. we need a young love-struck richard and emily story also to see how emily coped with becoming a gilmore against the word of richard's mother. we just need so so so much more that the show couldn't give to us, and that's where fanfiction writers come into play.
any other ideas for how we can enrich the gilmore girls fandom?
i do know also that we need people who aren't afraid to share their ideas or opinions on the show. it does have quite a lot of discourse behind it, and i know that the fandom can be a bit toxic sometimes. it's also important to acknowledge that tons of aspects of the show aged poorly, but like other fandoms (how the marauders came from harry potter), we can bring this one back to life for the next generation of gilmore girls, fast talkers, and tv lovers.
