Hyper Light Breaker launches in Early Access in the late summer - Gematsu

Roguelite action game Hyper Light Breaker will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam in the late summer, publisher Arc Games and developer Heart Machine announced.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of Summer Game Fest and reveal to millions of people around the world that Hyper Light Breaker will be releasing in Early Access later this summer,” said Heart Machine founder and creative director Alx Preston in a press release. “This trailer truly reflects all the progress our team has been making on Breaker, as the trailer gives a fresh look at the Overgrowth, co-op multiplayer gameplay and other never-before-seen footage. We are so grateful for the support from our community that’s been with us every step of the way. We can’t wait for you all to experience this world.”

From Heart Machine, the award-winning team behind critically-acclaimed titles Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash, comes Hyper Light Breaker, a new cooperative roguelite adventure set in the beloved Hyper Light Drifter universe. Hyper Light Breaker is a brand-new entry in the Hyper Light franchise, with a unique story fully realized in 3D for the first time. Holy fuck if that shit wasn't putting me to sleep and it wasn't even because it started at 11pm over here. No offence to those devs and all but most of the stuff was Boring with capital b. There've been some exciting announcements from last year, from big name new releases, like Nintendo and Star Wars games, to long-awaited sequels of beloved indie games. There’s something for everyone; Ubisoft’s marauding pirate game Skull & Bones, a supervillainous shooter in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and plenty of remakes and remasters, such as yet another Final Fantasy remake. On top of that, rumours abound about a potential successor to the Nintendo Switch being announced later this year - they’re only rumours, of course, but it’s certainly an exciting idea. Now, for something more substantial: I’ve gathered up a list of what might be among the most highly-anticipated game releases planned for 2024 - take a look for yourself!

Princess Peach: Showtime!    One of the most famous women's faces in gaming will finally be taking centre stage once again in 2024 - literally! Trapped in a stage play overtaken by the Wicked Grape and her sour minions, Princess Peach will be rescuing herself this time as she fights her way across theatre-themed stages with her new powerful sidekick Stella. Stella will allow Peach to transform into various different costumes, each granting her unique abilities like swashbuckling Swordfighter Peach and expert tracker Detective Peach. It’s been over 18 years since Peach headlined her own video game, but considering her growing protagonistic role in recent Super Mario games, leaving her damsel-in-distress role behind and joining Mario in the action, it’s about time she gets the leading role once more! Hades II    Hades, Supergiant Games’ mythical roguelike that has taken gaming by storm since 2018, is getting an almighty sequel this year with Hades II planned to enter early access in the first half of 2024. Once again, players will battle through the ever-changing Underworld of Greek mythology, encountering various gods - both new and familiar - that will help or hinder your grand odyssey. Play as Melinoë, sister to the first games’ protagonist Zagreus, daughter of Hades and the immortal Princess of the Underworld, as she faces off against the mighty Chronos. The Titan of Time takes the role of the main antagonist this time around, having kidnapped dear old dad Hades and plotting to wage war against all of Olympus. Star Wars Outlaws    Rev up that hyperdrive, get a good blaster by your side, and return to the galaxy far, far away in a brand new, single-player open-world interstellar adventure: Star Wars Outlaws! While the Empire is busy battling the Rebellion and Han Solo is in the middle of a carbonite nap, a new scoundrel on the scene named Kay Vess aims to make a name for herself in the galaxy’s thriving criminal underworld. Pick sides or go it alone in a choices-matter storyline, combining sneaking around and straight fights across plenty of planets, both familiar and new. Outlaws has no specific confirmed release date, but as Ubisoft tends to release games around October or November, we can expect Outlaws to release sometime in the latter half of 2024.

World of Goo 2    Feel that nostalgia? That’s right; World of Goo, one of the earliest and most definitive examples of a successful indie game from way back in 2008, is finally getting a sequel - fifteen years later! Announced completely out of the blue during the 2023 Game Awards, there hasn’t been much confirmed about the game quite yet besides an expected release in 2024. Even so, the announcement trailer brings back much of the familiar satirical humour and strangely-unsettling monochromatic artstyle that fans loved from the original. For those that didn’t grow up playing this classic, World of Goo is a physics-based puzzler all about building precarious bridges out of goo balls, crossing gaps and avoiding obstacles to get as many goo balls from point A to point B as possible, all under a narrative of corporate greed and consumption that rings truer than ever nowadays. The sequel will certainly have a lot to talk about, I’m sure.

   Of course, there are plenty more games set to release in 2024, many of which haven’t even been announced yet - who knows, we might even finally get Silksong this year! Hyper Light Breaker launches in Early Access this summer

Roguelite action game Hyper Light Breaker will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam this summer, publisher Arc Games and developer Heart Machine announced.

In the final moments of the video, viewers are given a glimpse of what appears to be the current graphics within the game. The video description and Steam description of the game confirm that it will feature an online multiplayer co-op mode. After the animated sequence, the trailer shows what appears to be basic art featuring a total of five main characters. Wishlist Hyper Light Breaker on Steam

This time around we didn’t wait such a long time to drop more info on a new game.

With Solar Ash we were trying something new; working with a publisher for the first time, transitioning from 2D to 3D, and mostly working in a vacuum. In the end, we released a project we’re incredibly proud of, but the process deviated heavily from how we did things with Hyper Light Drifter, and ultimately, how we want to do things in the future.

We’ve decided, following the (we hope) exciting announcement of Hyper Light Breaker, to return to a more community-focused development process. We will also continue be a multi-project studio, so keep a look out for more new stuff from us in the not-too-distant future (*eyes dart around, looks over shoulder, gazes at the ground blushing and giggling*).

Our aim going forward will be to continually engage with our wonderful players through regular blog posts, content drops, streams, events, contests, and perhaps even some in-person affairs! As a team, we’re continually in awe of the creators who connect with our projects: the artists, students, musicians, developers, designers, writers, streamers, speedrunners, and more who make up our incredible and diverse community. We hope to continue to inspire and amplify your work!

Is it a sequel? 

Hyper Light Breaker is neither a sequel nor a prequel to Hyper Light Drifter. It is set in the universe of Hyper Light and is its own story. It will share threads, aesthetics, lore and other recognizable elements, but will be a new game driven by new designs.

Why did we decide to return to that universe?

The faded whisper of allure of this world we built transformed into a clarion call through the years. A new story became a solid vision. It felt right to come back in, root around, and share what we unearthed about this beautiful-yet-bleak world with everyone.

Is it single player?

This time, you won’t be traveling alone through our range of lush though deadly landscapes. You’ll be able to play alone or with friends online cooperatively! There will be more hidden truths about the world to uncover, an ever-shifting landscape, and tremendous rewards for exploration. Plus, you’ll see the world in 3 full dimensions. Wild.
