Hi folks, those of you who’ve been watching my streams recently have probably seen my PC starting to struggle.

I’ve cleaned it out, gutted bloatware and tried to optimise OBS the best I can but it’s getting on a bit.

To overhaul my entire PC would cost a hell of a lot, so I’m going to try and do it incrementally. I’ll need to replace my CPU, Motherboard, RAM and GPU.

The first and cheapest component is new RAM (turns out you can’t just download more) and a few people have very generously contributed to new RAM via my throne wishlist.

I won’t be able to use the RAM until I upgrade the motherboard, but I’m looking into that now and see if I can sell some stuff to afford it.

I love streaming and it’d be nice to not have OBS die on me. I know I can’t ask for much, but any help would be hugely appreciated💙

I use clip studio paint! Sometimes I use aseprite or pixel studio for pixel art, or flip note for animations

That was a pretty rude thing to say. Some people have older computers than you and can’t afford to upgrade. You kinda just snapped at someone who was confessing a problem that they were having.

As for the last bit of your post, that’s literally what this post was about. They don’t need to “cater” exactly, but companies need to fucking optimize enough so someone with a slightly older build should play it. People shouldn’t have to upgrade their computer every time they want to play a new game.

Like, I can’t afford to get a pc right now. I have a laptop (that is NOT a gaming laptop) that runs at least some games, but I figured out that it was too weak to play the Sam and Max remake. I was a bit bummed. I can’t really invest all my money into a new computer right now. So I truly understand where that other commenter was coming from!!

The fact that "new game" is nowadays equal to "new hardware" is sickening. You want to play a new game, or perhaps a sequel to a game you liked? 160 Gb disk space and 32 Gb RAM please! Pleasure doing business! Sickening.

after you get the letter from joja (day five) the mines become accessible! it’s to the right of linus’ tent/robin’s house (the very top of the map) (i presumed you were past day five since you can’t build a scarecrow till you reach farming level one, which you can’t do before your first harvest of parsnips)

if you wouldn’t mind sharing who you’ve met already, i could probably tell you who you haven’t! my first time i couldn’t for the life of me figure out who i was missing because i thought i’d talked to everyone but turned out i hadn’t personally interacted with pierre, only bought things from him. sebastian (emo dude) is a bit nocturnal, it’s easiest to find him smoking near the lake up north. if you go to pierre’s on tuesdays, you’ll catch a lot of the ladies doing exercises! if you haven’t met elliott yet, he goes to pierre’s on fridays and hangs out on the bridge leading to the beach some (/most?) evenings. unless it’s raining in which case he stays inside all day. have you had the community centre cut scene yet?

also there’s an egg festival on the thirteenth for which all the villagers will be present. make sure to have some money on you though because pierre sells strawberry seeds at the event and it’s a great moneymaker with multiple harvests/loved gift of two villagers.

also don’t worry if you feel a bit lost (if you do) my first run i didn’t know about the mines till day 12 or something and i only found it because i was running towards a leek.

general tips: check the tv in your farmhouse for weather/luck predictions. also “living off the land” for helpful tips and “queen of the sauce” recipes (which you’ll be able to cook after you upgrade your house but don’t worry about that for now)

check the notice board in front of pierre’s for both “help wanted” quests (extra cash + friendship points + prize tickets - later) and the calendar (left side) for birthdays. giving villagers a gift on their birthday gives (or takes) you 8x times the friendship points as usual! i’d give lewis a parsnip, vincent and haley a daffodil, shane a beer/pizza if i can afford it.

if you’re playing on pc and are having trouble with controls, press e, go to options, and adjust them. also turn on tool hit location so you don’t waste energy pickaxing the wrong spot for two hours as i once did.

on fridays and sundays, a travelling merchant sells their wares to the left of marnie’s ranch (south of your farm). might become very helpful.

sorry if i’m overwhelming you with information haha i found the learning curve very fun but also daunting because there seemed to be so much i didn’t know and every guide i read/watched only made me restart the game for the eighty fifth time. i don’t want that for you aha and i hope you get to have all the fun without the trial and error it took me to learn that half the fun in playing is in having fun and playing (rocket science i know)

He’s super techy but like there’s nothing he needs a newer phone for tbh because he wouldn’t be able to work off even a 14 Max Pro or w/e (he has an iMac and a desktop PC and he has like a very new iPad that he can do some stuff off of when we travel but also mostly because he needed a new iPad lol because his was really fuck old so then idk he bought himself a new one). Unless you’re working off your phone/an influencer there is no reason to get a new phone. It can do pretty much all the same things, the 14’s camera is just a lot better. I wonder if I could get popular enough to like. Crowd fund the parts to upgrade my computer to have like. A new motherboard and video card and stuff to do better gaming stuff. I didn’t put it together myself I admit I did pay a local computer guy $100 I think to put all the pieces together so like. I mean. That’s supporting my local business.

But I have a pretty big tower to fit pieces if I can just figure out some like components to buy to upgrade the like. Computer itself. I could probably do alright. And now NFTs are dead there might be actual Video Cards on the market. When I was building my PC back in the day it was fucking impossible to find a Video Card that wasn’t either slightly garbage (the one I currently have is not great) or a bajillion dollars. So maybe I can find something affordable. And I think I need to upgrade the motherboard, I have an upstairs do whatever computer that’s like an all-in-one and in my basement is a like. Desktop that I need to upgrade. It’s my project beast. That my anxiety around the basement has kept me from getting to work with, which is definitely pretty pathetic, I know, but like whatever.

I probably should just try to save money but with things becoming more expensive and my income not really increasing that is. Difficult. And since I feel like I’m just getting sicker and sicker I don’t know how I’m gonna like. Suddenly summon the ability to earn money. I can’t create or do things when I feel like I’m dying. I should have better impulse control. I need to not buy things. Maybe I’ll try very hard to not buy anything. I don’t know if I can succeed in this. It’s not usually when I’m at my most coherent when I’m like “I need that”

GPU, potentially motherboard, potentially internal SSD, probably some like. I think it didn’t have Bluetooth or wifi internally setup so I need to figure out that setup because whatever I do setup externally always seems to be inferior and bullshit. And takes up USB ports. And I’m always gonna end up needing those and I don’t wanna overload the system. So I think those are in the motherboard and that’s why I need to upgrade the motherboard. And I need a GPU that lets me hook up my tablet *and* do a screen record without a third party software and causing serious RAM issues. Because my video card isn’t equipped for screen recording and can barely handle a lot of the games I try to run despite the upgraded memory.

I know high quality video cards still run in the thousands, and I still gotta figure out compatibility, but if I’m replacing the motherboard that’s probably kinda everything… but it might just come down to the case but I think my case is a big ol’ behemoth of a thing. But then I gotta make sure everything else is compatible with a new motherboard or I may as well start over from scratch. I wish I actually knew what I was talking about.

I got my first laptop in 2009 when I turned 15. It’s a late 2008 aluminum MacBook and praise the lord it still fucking works. But I had to fix it. I replaced the battery twice. I’ve replaced the charger at least 3 times. I replaced the speaker. I’ve upgraded the RAM twice and once was recent because I’d JUST found out my laptop can support 8 GB. Cannot thank iFixit enough!

Mac enthusiasts will tell you that past a certain point (it was either 2014 or 2015 MacBook) you can’t fix it up. Because Apple is hostile towards people who fix their computers at a cheaper price than they’re offering.

I was recently looking into getting a new laptop because out of the three I have, 1) MacBook is too old, 2) the Dell I have is rebooted with Linux Ubuntu so it doesn’t support all apps that Windows/MacOSX has, 3) old Chromebook is kinda useless now.

So naturally, as one does, I started looking at MacBooks. Just to see what these flashy new ones are like.

And I’m so mad because NONE of the new ones except the Studio desktop one had a USB port.

I freely admit I’m a bit behind on the times in terms of technology— I don’t go for what’s new and trendy, I go for what works and what I can afford. I literally got my first iPhone in 2021. I was a preteen when the first iPhone came out.

I USE usb ports. I NEED USB ports because my flash drives and external hard drives and devices USE USB PORTS and you’re telling me Apple decided we don’t NEED ports anymore!? Because they get a say in what tech innovation is???

Whatever they’re doing isn’t innovation for the sake of technology it’s sales advancement for the sake of profit. They package something shiny and new for you with the biggest inconveniences and try to assure you you’re doing the right thing. The new thing is good.

I ended up buying a refurbished 2016 Lenovo Thinkbook with like 16 GB RAM and 200+ GB for like $175 off Amazon. It runs Windows 10. Has touchscreen, thumb scanner, facial recognition. It’s beautiful. I love it.

My late 2008 MacBook can run old versions of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro I found online. Sure my laptop is slow sometimes, but I still use it more than my other laptops. My MacBook at this point is worth less than that Lenovo.

More expensive doesn’t mean it’s better alright? Don’t buy into the Apple hype because like ms-demeanor mentioned above, you can get equivalent parts at a better value.

What you need to look into when getting a laptop/computer and you’re just shopping around is 1) what do you need it for, which leads into 2) how much storage you want, 3) how much RAM you want for what you do, etc. Don’t ask me about gaming stuff because I’m not a gamer at all and I don’t know what good parts are for gamers.

And it’s overwhelming because there’s a lot of brands and computers out there! But to be real like, any Apple app out there, there’s a cheaper Windows equivalent too. Or an online one. A free one, perhaps. There’s a reason so many people love building PCs.

Am I a hypocrite for getting an iPhone? Well I wanted a new phone, I wanted to try an iPhone, and I wanted a phone with a good camera because I take a lot of pictures. And I like my iPhone 12. It was a learning curve since I’d been using Androids since 2012 but it’s alright. Will I buy another iPhone after this? Probably fuck no because this cost me $700 (paid off in like a year)!!!

tl;dr if you think Apple is superior then you’re new to tech and need to do more research into what YOU want out of a computer rather than what big brands tell you you want.

Since some people might want a Mac, I'll offer a Mac equivalent of your laptop guide from the perspective of a Mac/Linux person.

Even the cheapest Macs cost more than Windows laptops, but part of that is Apple not making anything for the low end of the tech spectrum. There is no equivalent Mac to an Intel i3 with 4 gigabytes of RAM. This makes it a lot easier to find the laptop you need.

That said, it is possible to buy the wrong Mac for you, and the wrong Mac for you is the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. Get literally anything else. If it has an M2 chip in it, it's the most recent model and will serve you well for several years. Any new MacBook Air is a good pick.

(You could wait for new Macs with M3, but I wouldn't bother. If you are reading these guides the M3 isn't going to do anything you need done that a M2 couldn't.)

Macs now have integrated storage and memory, so you should be aware that whatever internal storage and RAM you get, you'll be stuck with. But if you would be willing to get a 256 gig SSD in a Windows laptop, the Mac laptop with 256 gigs of storage will be just as good, and if you'd be willing to get 8 gigs of RAM in a Windows laptop the Mac will perform slightly better with the same amount of memory.

Buy a small external hard drive and hook it up so Time Machine can make daily backups of your laptop. Turn on iCloud Drive so your documents are available anywhere you can use a web browser. And get AppleCare because it will almost certainly be a waste of money but wooooooow will you be glad it's there if you need it.

I get that you are trying to help and I am not trying to be mean to you specifically, but people shouldn't buy apple computers. That's why I didn't provide specs for them. Apple is a company that is absolutely terrible to its customers and its customers deserve better than what apple is willing to offer.

Apple charges $800 to upgrade the onboard storage from a 256GB SSD to a 2TB SSD.

A 2TB SSD costs between $75-100.

I maintain that any company that would charge you more than half the cost of a new device to install a $100 part on day one is a company making the wrong computer for you.

The point of being willing to tolerate a 256GB SSD or 8GB RAM in a Windows laptop is that you're deferring some of the cost to save money at the time of purchase so that you can spend a little bit in three years instead of having to replace the entire computer. Because, you see, many people cannot afford to pay $1000 for a computer and need to buy a computer that costs $650 and will add $200 worth of hardware at a later date.

My minimum specs recommendations for a mac would be to configure one with the max possible RAM and SSD, look at the cost, and choose to go buy three i7 windows laptops with the same storage and RAM for less than the sticker price of the macs.

So let's say you want to get a 14" Macbook pro with the lowest-level processor. That's $2000. Now let's bump that from 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD to 32GB and 2TB. That gets you to $3000. (The SSD is $200 less than on the lower model, and they'll let you put in an 8TB SSD for $1800 on this model; that's not available on the 13" because apple's product development team is entirely staffed by assholes who think you deserve a shitty computer if you can't afford to pay the cost of two 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredos for a single laptop).

For $3000 you can get 3 Lenovo Workstation laptops with i7 processors, 32GB RAM, and a 2TB SSD.

And look, for just $200 more I could go up to 48GB RAM and get a 4TB SSD - it costs $600 to upgrade the 14" mac from a 2TB SSD to a 4TB SSD so you could still get three laptops with more ram and the same amount of storage for the cost of one macbook.

I get that some people need to use Final Cut and Logic Pro, but hoo boy they sure are charging you through the nose to use products that have become industry standard. The words "capture" and "monopoly" come to mind even though they don't quite apply here.

"Hostile" does, though, especially since Mac users end up locked into the ecosystem through software and cloud services and become uncertain how to leave it behind if they ever decide that a computer should cost less than a month's rent on a shitty studio apartment in LA.

There's a very good reason I didn't give mac advice and that's because my mac advice is "DON'T."

Wren notices something is up when you keep staring at him with that deadpan look. If the furrowed brows and deep frown are anything to go by, you’d say that he’s concerned. 

But that can’t be right. Nobody in this town cares about anything but themselves; hell, even Robin can’t even muster up the strength to help you out, letting you be taken off by Bailey when you can’t afford to pay, even knowing what happens.

You flinch when he takes a step forward, almost like you expect him to hit you for acting like… this. He comes up short, frown deepening. “Damn, I ain’t ever seen ya like this. Everything alright?”

The disbelieving laugh he gives almost shocks you. “Yeah, and I’m an upstandin’ citizen. I’ve been wondering why you haven’t been showing your tail around the farm of late, now I see it’s because you’ve upgraded to stealing from the nice folk.” His cocky grin almost irritates you.

“Yeah, well, sorry to deprive you and your friends of your nightly strip tease, but I’ve been busy.” You turn around to leave, only to be stopped by Wren’s hand on your arm.

“Hey, I’m serious. Are you alright?” You can’t help but be taken aback. You’ve never seen Wren like this before; head dipping to close out the rest of the world, eyes soft and full of worry, looking over every inch of you like that will give him the answer he’s seeking.

You swallow, tears welling in your throat. An emotion, but one you’ve been desperately trying to keep back. You can’t keep looking at him and keep the tears at bay at the same time, so you look away and mutter something along the lines of, “Yeah, I’m good.” 

You try to pull away, but he doesn’t let you go. “Come with me.” Your heart drops, (no, not you too), but make no attempt to stop him as he tugs you from the docks. He opens the passenger side of a car and guides you in.

You note that he doesn’t lock the door. Not like it matters, you’re too tired of fighting. It’s easier to just give in and get it over with.

The ride is silent, neither of you willing to break the silence. 

When he stops and leads you into a dingy looking apartment complex, you immediately start to strip. Wren freezes when he spots you. “Hey, woah, what are you doing?”

The look you give him suggests he’s the crazy one here. “I don’t want my clothes to get ripped or lost. It’s easier to just set them aside.”

Wren flushes a bright red. “That’s not- I mean- If you’d like but-” He cuts himself off, clearing his throat. “I didn’t bring you here for that.”

“Oh.” You stand with your shirt clutched in your hands, unsure what to do next. “Then, why-”

“I thought you’d like a place to sleep for a while. Somewhere that nobody will, uh, try to get at ya and all that.” He clears his throat again. “Anyways, showers down the hall to the left, and you can sleep on my bed in the back room.”

“Okay. Uh, thanks, I guess.”

“Yeah, whatever, don’t mention it. Feel free to take one of my shirts to sleep in. Actually, please take a shirt. I don’t want your muddy clothes on my bed.”

This actually prompts a smile from you, a warmth flooding through your veins for the first time in a long time. “Will do, boss.”

so i want to upgrade bits of my pc but i am not exactly hardware literate when it comes to pc stuff which means most of my day has been spent desperately trying to research if all the pieces i’m looking at are actually compatible and being met with a wall of indecipherable jargon

but ever since i had to replace the motherboard (i fried it....) my comp has been randomly shutting down - which, in part, might actually be due to the cpu overheating ? ? i’m buying some new heat sink paste or whatever its called in the meantime because uh

i can’t actually afford to purchase any of these new parts rn :’);;;

even if it turns out to just be the cpu overheating it is sort of time for an upgrade - aside from the new hard drive + RAM sticks i bought a little while ago, everything in this pc is 7yrs old which is. kind of old in tech terms. idk.

i’m itchin’ to make things run a little better so i don’t have to listen to my poor pc sound like a jet engine taking off if i do anything more strenuous than load a bunch of gifs on my dashboard........

bc seriously.

its done the random shutdown a few times over gifs on my dashboard.

i just hope when its all said and done that everything i’ve picked out works together = A =

i’ll just... need to figure out wtf to do with all the old parts...

It’s the start of mercury storm and one of my pc decided to fall in coma. And I know that I should have probably care for it more, but just decided not to. Wish me luck, I have a lot of memories on this one TT_TT

Tell me about it. My iPhone is on its last legs - I can’t afford an upgrade until my next payday, September 30 - and I have to hope like hell we can last until October 18 when Merc stations direct!! Blessings, ❤️❤️❤️

Upgrading Windows (NOT 10)

EDITED to add: I have a P5K3 Deluxe so it looks like I can go up to 8gb. I’ve checked my processor to make sure it’s compatible with 7 so I think that’s it, right?! Aside from saving everything I need to save.

Okay so my PC was a custom build from way back in the mid-to-late 2000s. As such, it’s currently running Vista (I know) 32bit (I KNOW).

I really only play The Sims 2 on it right now and can’t really afford a whole new PC just yet. For the most part, it runs great. Graphics are great, relatively smooth gameplay. But. I get some crashing problems that I suspect are from memory issues. This is my assumption based on the logs after crashes.

I have a 32 bit OS though so as far as I know, I can’t use the 4gb patch even though I have the RAM.

My question is this: if I upgraded to 7 64bit (it IS compatible with my hardware), could I use the 4gb patch and potentially fix the crashing?

I really don’t want 10 on this machine and I don’t have the money or desire to get a new PC just yet. I found a copy of 7 for like $40 though so if anyone thinks it’d be helpful, I’ll try it.
